Jonathan Coulton With Suzanne Vega: Now I Am an Arsonist

Far away, I hear the things they say about me
Music • Views: 30,724
Youtube Video

I was just an acrobat, high above the street
Pointing at the ground the empty sky beneath my feet
The perfect fall, no one could tell at all
That it was killing me

You were just an astronaut, floating on a spark
Tearing up the atmosphere, burning down the dark
As you fell in, the heat against your skin
Till it got too bright to see

Far away, I hear the things they say about me
Even though they know you had to go without me

Now you are an architect, setting up the sea
Everyone is with you and you’re all waiting for me
You check the net, but you haven’t caught me yet
They’re not quite done with me

Now I am an arsonist, seven miles high
Burning through the air I breathe, thunder in the sky
My engine sings as it melts this pair of wings
That only I can see

Touch the sun, my eyes wide open unbelieving
Catch a breath, the only one who’s left is leaving

Now I am an arsonist

Have you actually read the Constitution? I have and did you know that there is very specific wording that says the Congress has the Duty to Promote Science, but no wording about ANY duty towards God?

Another neighbor comes to try to pull GZ's ass out of the fire:

Neighbor defends George Zimmerman

"I saw George. He was banged up. His head had two big bandages, that weren't flat, had a bump on them," the neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said.

He described where the injuries were.

"I seen him have a big bandage on his nose and his nose swollen. On the side, where his eyes were at, it was swollen," he said.

Yeah, it's funny how this neighbor "comes forward" right after the video is released, especially considering that the severity of his "wounds" has been in doubt for weeks now.

Yes. And you should see what happened to Trayvon. He had one hole that penetrated his sternum and a bullet that entered his heart at supersonic speed nearly disintegrating his heart within an instant. He likely felt like he experienced a massive heart attack and the body immediately began the draining of his blood from his vital organs. He was likely dead within 2 minutes if not immediately. A rough estimation.

15 SanFranciscoZionist  Fri, Mar 30, 2012 10:01:00pm

I know we talk of nothing else, but this comment on a thread at Ta-Nehisi Coates' blog, about Trayvon, struck me:

Because, you know, a dead kid. A dead kid that people are doing oppo research on. It's ghastly.

Oppo research. That's exactly what they're doing.

16 Gretchen G.Tiger  Fri, Mar 30, 2012 10:01:32pm

What I don't get about all these people coming forward is:

1) have they reported any of this to Law Enforcement? They never say.

2) are they being paid?

At this point, I think it is all about promoting the Pseudo News Product and trying to get some of that Trayvon Market Share.

Nothing more.

Well, the guy wouldn't need to report this to the cops, considering that if GZ truly was injured, it'd be apparent to them on the night of the shooting.

As for getting paid, it might not even be that. He may support, consciously or subconsciously, GZ portrayal as the "victim" and so is going to the press with this story as an effort to counter accusations that the video proves that GZ wasn't injured that night.

But really, if this was an injury that resulted in serious swelling and warranted two large bandages the next day, how is it none of that apparent in the video? Why are there no bandages or a bag of ice on his head if he's taken injuries that require that sort of care?

Well, CNN's reporting that Lotto officials say that the jackpot was hit by somebody in the Baltimore county of Maryland.

29 Gretchen G.Tiger  Fri, Mar 30, 2012 10:17:33pm
"Truth cannot contradict truth." In other words, to the extent that the theory of evolution has a solid scientific basis, it must be compatible with Catholic doctrine.

A decade before, the secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, delivered a series of homilies that were published in 1990 under the title In the Beginning . . . : A Catholic Understanding of the Story of Creation and the Fall. In those homilies, he made a similar argument: The creation story in Genesis is a spiritual history. It simply doesn't matter what physical means God used to create the world and all living creatures therein; what matters is that man is both body and soul, and his creation is not complete until God has breathed the breath of life into him. And about the creation of the soul (and, thus, of the complete man), science can tell us nothing.

That same Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, recently restated his (and Pope John Paul's) argument. As MSNBC reported, Pope Benedict has referred to the debate between creationists and supporters of evolutionary theory as an "absurdity":

This is the same message that Thomas Aquino (aka St. Thomas Aquinas) taught to Catholics in the 13th century. I have joked about how Rick Santorum with a 4G iPhone that has access to all of mankind's accumulated knowledge at his fingertips is less enlightened than Thomas Aquinas was before the printing press was invented.

85 Gus  Fri, Mar 30, 2012 11:20:14pm

Attributed to Abraham Lincoln. A wonderful poem from the first Republican.

The Suicide's Soliloquy

Here, where the lonely hooting owl
Sends forth his midnight moans,
Fierce wolves shall o’er my carcase growl,
Or buzzards pick my bones.

No fellow-man shall learn my fate,
Or where my ashes lie;
Unless by beasts drawn round their bait,
Or by the ravens’ cry.

Yes! I’ve resolved the deed to do,
And this the place to do it:
This heart I’ll rush a dagger through,
Though I in hell should rue it!

Hell! What is hell to one like me
Who pleasures never knew;
By friends consigned to misery,
By hope deserted too?

To ease me of this power to think,
That through my bosom raves,
I’ll headlong leap from hell’s high brink,
And wallow in its waves.

Though devils yell, and burning chains
May waken long regret;
Their frightful screams, and piercing pains,
Will help me to forget.

Yes! I’m prepared, through endless night,
To take that fiery berth!
Think not with tales of hell to fright
Me, who am damn’d on earth!

Sweet steel! come forth from your sheath,
And glist’ning, speak your powers;
Rip up the organs of my breath,
And draw my blood in showers!

I strike! It quivers in that heart
Which drives me to this end;
I draw and kiss the bloody dart,
My last—my only friend!

From wiki,

The first sign international researchers had that the earthquake caused such a dramatic change in the Earth’s rotation came from the United States Geographical Survey which monitors Global Positioning Satellite stations across the world. The Survey team had several GPS monitors located near the scene of the earthquake. The GPS station located nearest the epicenter moved almost 13 feet (4.0 m). This motivated government researchers to look into other ways the earthquake may have had large scale effects on the planet. Scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory did some calculations and determined that the Earth’s rotation was changed by the earthquake to the point where the days are now one point eight (1.8) microseconds shorter

Settlements for injuries or illness are non-taxable. I'm not sure how the IRS would consider this. Settlements for property losses aren't taxed to the extent they cover a loss. Certainly covering the cost of selling their home, buying another home, and private full-time security for several years wouldn't be taxed.

That was the Japan Quake.
My bad.

98 Varek Raith  Fri, Mar 30, 2012 11:30:28pm

Also interesting and scary,

Energy

This earthquake released a surface energy (Me) of 1.9 ± 0.5×1017 joules,[56] dissipated as shaking and tsunamic energy, which is nearly double that of the 9.1-magnitude 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that killed 230,000 people. If harnessed, the surface energy from this earthquake would power a city the size of Los Angeles for an entire year.[41] The total energy released, also known as the seismic moment (M0), was more than 200,000 times the surface energy and was calculated by the USGS at 3.9×1022 joules,[57] slightly less than the 2004 Indian Ocean quake. This is equivalent to 9,320 gigatons of TNT, or approximately 600 million times the energy of the Hiroshima bomb.

Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED) calculated a peak ground acceleration of 2.99 g (29.33 m/s²).[58][fn 2] The largest individual recording in Japan was 2.7g, in the Miyagi Prefecture, 75 km from the epicentre; the highest reading in the Tokyo metropolitan area was 0.16g.[61]

Think it gets to me that, when I was born in '84, the Internet was something limited primarily to universities, the military, and those few "early adopters." That cellphones were the size of bricks and primarily seen in the hands of guys working in the financial sector, with most everybody else limited to pagers to get those important calls. That cable TV was still something new and different, when 200 channels seemed excessive. And CD players were major investments.

103 Varek Raith  Fri, Mar 30, 2012 11:33:14pm

The 2004 Indian Ocean quake,

The shift of mass and the massive release of energy very slightly altered the Earth's rotation. The exact amount is not yet known, but theoretical models suggest the earthquake shortened the length of a day by 2.68 microseconds, due to a decrease in the oblateness of the Earth.[28] It also caused the Earth to minutely "wobble" on its axis by up to 2.5 cm (1 in) in the direction of 145° east longitude,[29] or perhaps by up to 5 or 6 cm (2.0 or 2.4 in).[30] However, because of tidal effects of the Moon, the length of a day increases at an average of 15 µs per year, so any rotational change due to the earthquake will be lost quickly. Similarly, the natural Chandler wobble of the Earth, which in some cases can be up to 15 m (50 ft), will eventually offset the minor wobble produced by the earthquake

Speaking of the Great East Honshu Earthquake, from today's news:

Japan, not Iran, may be oil market's focus in April-Campbell

The showdown between Iran and the West over Tehran's nuclear program remains the overarching risk facing oil markets but in the near term, nuclear power in Japan may well become the short term focus for traders.

The near total shutdown of Japan's nuclear power industry since last year's devastating earthquake and tsunami turned the Japanese electricity sector into a surprise source of oil demand growth in Asia last year.

Japanese utilities have turned to low sulfur fuel oil and sweet crude oil as they scramble to meet power demand, outbidding regional refiners for some crude grades.

Only one of the country's 54 reactors remains operational and this plant is slated to shut down for a scheduled inspection and maintenance in May.

[...]

and:

Japan Oil Imports for Power Surge as South Sudan Supply Is Lost

Japan lost oil supplies from South Sudan, even as its total crude purchases for generating power surged because of the need to replace electricity from idle atomic reactors.

The country imported 1.75 million kiloliters of oil, or about 369,000 barrels a day, for power generation in February, more than four times as much as a year ago, according to data today from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Imports for power generation were up 15 percent from January. February’s purchases for power plants accounted for 9.6 percent of Japan’s total crude imports of 17.76 million kiloliters for the month, according to the trade ministry data.

The increase comes amid a halt in supplies of low-sulfur crude from South Sudan, which is suitable for many oil-fired generators in Japan.

That's the thing, you always either get one of two things with scifi series these days: A basket of loose ends because the studio decided not to pick it up for another season or a bad ending because the studio had to rush to come up with a plausible way to tie everything up at the last second.

An revealing trend in our society:

Study: Trust in science among educated conservatives plunges

Conservatives, particularly those with college educations, have become dramatically more skeptical of science over the past four decades, according to a study published in the April issue of the American Sociological Review. Fewer than 35 percent of conservatives say they have a "great deal" of trust in the scientific community now, compared to nearly half in 1974.

"The scientific community ... has been concerned about this growing distrust in the public with science. And what I found in the study is basically that's really not the problem. The growing distrust of science is entirely focused in two groups—conservatives and people who frequently attend church," says the study's author, University of North Carolina postdoctoral fellow Gordon Gauchat.

In fact, in 1974, people who identified as conservatives were among the most confident in science as an institution, with liberals trailing slightly behind, and moderates bringing up the rear. Liberals have remained fairly steady in their opinion of the scientific community over the interim, while conservative trust in science has plummeted.

Interestingly, the most educated conservatives have led that charge. Conservatives with college degrees began distrusting science earlier and more forcefully than other conservatives, upending assumptions that less educated people on the whole are more distrustful of science.

Gauchat attributes the changes to two forces: Both science and conservatives have changed a lot in 40 years. In the post-WWII period, research was largely wedded to the Defense Department and NASA—think the space race and the development of the atomic bomb. Now the scientific institution "has come out from behind those institutions and been its own cultural force." That has meant it is increasingly viewed as a catalyst of government regulation, as in the failed Democratic proposal to institute cap-and-trade as a way to reduce carbon emissions and stave off climate change.

"People are now viewing science as part of government regulation," Gauchat says. [...]

I will also point out that many highly religious people who are "college educated" are getting degrees from religious schools. So the pool of college educated "conservatives" may be growing in "education" profile that way, too.

The paper in focus:

Politicization of Science in the Public Sphere

This study explores time trends in public trust in science in the United States from 1974 to 2010. More precisely, I test Mooney’s (2005) claim that conservatives in the United States have become increasingly distrustful of science. Using data from the 1974 to 2010 General Social Survey, I examine group differences in trust in science and group-specific change in these attitudes over time. Results show that group differences in trust in science are largely stable over the period, except for respondents identifying as conservative. Conservatives began the period with the highest trust in science, relative to liberals and moderates, and ended the period with the lowest. The patterns for science are also unique when compared to public trust in other secular institutions. Results show enduring differences in trust in science by social class, ethnicity, gender, church attendance, and region. I explore the implications of these findings, specifically, the potential for political divisions to emerge over the cultural authority of science and the social role of experts in the formation of public policy.

Oh, another bit of creationist news:

Encouraging college students to defend their faith

Renowned intelligent design expert Dr. William Dembski is taking a teaching position at the Southern Evangelical Seminary this August.

Dembski will be the Phillip E. Johnson Research Professor of Science and Culture, named for the founder of modern intelligent design. He says he is especially concerned about the 70 to 80 percent of students who shed their faith after attending college. He will also be working to advance the seminary's Institute of Scientific Apologetics.

"I don't see apologetics as the full solution to it, but I think it's a piece of the puzzle, and I think [for] a lot Christians, a lot of church-going people, the question is asked -- why do you believe in Christianity? Why do you think it's true," he suggests. "I think they don't really have an answer."

Dembski says he is "an old-earth creationist" when it comes to the Genesis account of creation.

"So I don't read it as a literal six days, 6,000-year chronology. I know there's some variation on that," he admits. "The other position certainly is the traditional one, and I don't have a problem with believers who hold that."

Dembski is also a senior fellow with the Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture and a research professor in philosophy at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Well, at least the writer of that article admitted that Philip Johnson created "Intelligent Design"; given the non-scientific origin of ID I wonder how people like Dembski can still maintain that that ID is science.

I'm not sure this announcement is new news, given the bible school (it is not accredited by the organization of colleges that accredits colleges in the southeast, but rather by an association of bible schools) with which he now associates has a webpage for Dembski's efforts: [Link: ses.edu...] .

Oh, and given that school has as in its doctrinal statement:

Creation
We believe in the special creation of the entire space-time universe and of every basic form of life in the six historic days of the Genesis creation record. We also believe in the historicity of the biblical record, including the special creation of Adam and Eve as the literal progenitors of all people, the literal fall and resultant divine curse on the creation, the worldwide flood, and the origin of nations and diverse languages at the tower of Babel.

I note that all three guys in their "scientific apologetics" effort are old-earth creationists.

168 Feline Emperor of the Conservative Waste  Sat, Mar 31, 2012 4:13:33am

re: #167 freetoken

Nothing to worry about. Demski is kept track of in a few places and he has a willow-like ability to bend between old-earth and new-earth creationist statements depending on the audience. And science apologetics is at least a bit more honest a term than the crap the intelligent design movement generally pushes.

And all because reality doesn't exactly agree with the multiple times translated words that are in their holy book.

169 freetoken  Sat, Mar 31, 2012 4:19:46am

The SES Facebook page announcing the appointment has a real screamer:

Renowned intelligent design expert Dr. William Dembski will join the faculty at Southern Evangelical Seminary this August as the Phillip E. Johnson Research Professor of Science and Culture.

In addition to teaching, Dembski will be instrumental in the advancement of Southern Evangelical Seminary's Institute of Scientific Apologetics, a relatively new facet of SES's award-winning Apologetics education.

Dembski's position is named for Phillip E. Johnson, an esteemed scholar and founder of the modern intelligent design movement. Dembski will be the first occupant of the Chair.

"We are very proud to announce the expansion of Dr. William Dembski's role here at Southern Evangelical Seminary from adjunct professor to now a full-time faculty research professor," said Bob Westra, SES Board Member and Interim COO. "The students, faculty and staff are thrilled to have this world-class scholar on board as the Phillip E. Johnson Research Professor of Science and Culture. For 20 years, SES has been a leader in training students in Christian apologetics, and Dr. Dembski's expertise and knowledge are a welcome and exciting addition."

A mathematician and philosopher, Dembski was a Research Professor in Philosophy at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He is also a senior fellow with Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture in Seattle as well as the executive director of the International Society for Complexity, Information and Design. Previously he was the Carl F. H. Henry Professor of Theology and Science at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, where he founded its Center for Theology and Science. Before that he was Associate Research Professor in the Conceptual Foundations of Science at Baylor University, where he also headed The Michael Polanyi Center, the first intelligent design think tank at a major research university.

They sure love superlatives there, don't them?

Calling Phillip Johnson an "esteemed scholar" is almost as bad as calling Dembski a "world-class scholar".

re: #168 Feline Emperor of the Conservative Waste

The old earth probably isn't a problem for SES as they also have Hugh Ross in their program.

The Babel thing though, as the origin of all the languages of the world - that's going to be a tough one. It implies that all languages differentiate only about 4000 years ago, which we know isn't true.

Of course, we know the rest of the stuff isn't true either, but somehow all of that is irrelevant to them.

Oh yes, his backwards-in-time traveling consequences for the fall:

The reason this divergence between young-earth and old-earth creationists is relevant to the problem of evil is that Christians have traditionally believed that both moral and natural evil are a consequence of the fall of humanity. But natural evil, such as animals killing and parasitizing each other, would predate the arrival of humans on the scene if the earth is old and animal life preceded them. So, how could their suffering be a consequence of human sin and the Fall? My solution is to argue that the Fall had retroactive effects in history (much as the salvation of Christ on the Cross acts not only forward in time to save people now, but also backward in time to save the Old Testament saints).

Uh huh....

I don't think even the YEC's can swallow that one. In fact, they don't.

Dembski is arguing that the billions of years of death of organisms only happened because of Adam's fall 6000 years ago.

re: #247 Cannadian Club Akbar

And, oh, stop changing the name. First, global warming. Then, climate change. Then, AGW. This does turn people away from the argument. Sorry.

Global warming is the name for the fact that globe is warming. Climate change is the result of global warming. Anthropogenic Global Warming is the phrase indicating humans are responsible for the warming.

Each is a separate concept. It's not changing the name.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.(KTHV) -- Arkansas Supreme Court reverses a teacher's conviction of sexual assault.

David Paschal taught history and psychology at Elkins High School in 2010 when he began a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student. Court documents state after the two broke-up, the student notified authorities and Paschal was charged with four counts of sexual assault. A jury sentenced him to 30 years in prison.

However, because the student was legally an adult and the relationship was consensual, the Arkansas Supreme Court says Paschal is not a criminal.

PolitiFact on SYG laws in Florida

The FBI’s UCR handbook explains that a storekeeper shooting a gunman attempting a robbery is a justifiable homicide. But if two men playing cards get into an argument in which the first man attacked the second with a broken bottle and the second man shot his attacker claiming self-defense, that should not be reported as justifiable homicide.

FDLE’s data is based on information reported by police departments -- that reporting is voluntary but nearly all the agencies comply, FDLE spokesman Keith Kameg said. The data refers to how police labeled the homicide -- not charging decisions by prosecutors or court outcomes. FDLE compiles the data for the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports, a national source of crime statistics."

---

Smith said that since "stand your ground" passed in 2005, deaths due to self-defense have jumped over 250 percent. When we calculated the average for five years before the law passed and five years after it passed, we found an increase of 200 percent. That’s short of Smith’s claim, though the numbers largerly support the idea that self-defense deaths have increased since 2005. As for whether "stand your ground" is the reason self-defense deaths are up, experts either disagree or say it’s difficult to determine without examining the specifics of each case.

We rate this statement Half True.

In Other Words: Correlation does not mean Causation.

It does, however, warrant investigation.--Case-by-Case.

Firstly, they don't have much of anything to run on now, not anything that's factual or that will work with their voters. Fortunately for them, they don't need anything to run on. Conservative cultists exist in a separate world, where the economy continues to tank and armies of blacks, Mexicans, and liberals lie in wait to round up free Americans and herd them into concentration camps as soon as the Kenyan is re-elected. The word “dinosaur” made the hit list because dinosaurs suggest evolution which creationists might not like, WCBS 880′s Marla Diamond reported. “Halloween” is targeted because it suggests paganism; a “birthday” might not be happy to all because it isn’t celebrated by Jehovah’s Witnesses.

WTF? Creationists love dinosaurs. Kent Hoving's nickname is "Dr. Dino". Creationists love building various "dinosaur parks". Whoever suggested that dinos are a threat to creationists has a head up their anus.

Hemmings and Thomas Jefferson married, postumously by the LDS Church??

What is surprising is that the LDS Church, according to its Family Search registry, considers Hemings to be Thomas Jefferson’s wife. (One of two—the other of course being Jefferson’s legal wife, Martha, who happens to be Sally Hemings’s half-sister; she and Hemings were both the daughters of Virginia plantation owner John Wayles.) Jefferson is also listed as the father of Hemings’s children. This means that the LDS Church recognizes Jefferson’s paternity of a sizable number of his own slaves, something that Jefferson himself refused to do when it became a campaign issue during the 1800 presidential race.* (Jefferson also failed to acknowledge he fathered Hemings’s children in the detailed logs the president kept of the births and deaths among Monticello’s slave population.

re: #311 Renaissance_Man

Firstly, they don't have much of anything to run on now, not anything that's factual or that will work with their voters. Fortunately for them, they don't need anything to run on. Conservative cultists exist in a separate world, where the economy continues to tank and armies of blacks, Mexicans, and liberals lie in wait to round up free Americans and herd them into concentration camps as soon as the Kenyan is re-elected. Candidates can refer to this mythical world and have their base come out in droves to vote in the real one.

Considering that the base isn't all that enthused by Romney, actually seem to hate the guy more and more as they get to know him on the campaign trail, I'm not sure even whipping them up with the old dog whistles is gonna work. And those same whistles sure as hell ain't gonna work with indie voters, who are worried about the economy and jobs, two things that are on a slow come-back right now. What's the GOP gonna run on? "Yeah, we know things are getting better, but with think we can make it even better!"?

Yes. Then they're GANGSTERS! Of course that was one of the reasons it was categorized alongside heroin by the DEA. But before that most of the reasoning behind it being illegal was based on cultural "taboos" since pot was enjoyed by people from alternative cultures.

Limbaugh has studied Alinsky well. He's been moderately successful in caricaturizing Sharpton and Jackson using the race pimps pejorative.

I don't know if I want to put my full support behind them but the race pimps title is a racist laden smear.

What financial crisis? Congress suffers short-term memory lapse:

In the GOP-controlled House on Monday, legislators on both sides of the aisle changed derivative rules in the Dodd-Frank financial reform act that places new limits on regulating derivatives. Americans for Financial Reform are suspicious that the two new bills would increase instability and risk in markets. They claim that exempting end users from margin requirements will encourage large corporations to make riskier trades using “derivative swaps” because they will no longer be required to have cash reserves if deals go bad.

It's used for a very specific political purpose - to ridicule the notion that racial bias is a significant issue in modern day America, to deny the experiences of bigotry African Americans experience on a daily basis, etc. It's actually worse than just being racist - it's exploiting a natural tendency towards bigotry - even if it isn't conscious racism - for a political purpose.

It harkens back to when King was dismissed as an "outside agitator," and one of the more offensive aspects is when frightwingers like Rush use the rhetoric of King, calling for a color blind society, to advance the agenda to exploit bigotry for political ends.

I think for Rush and frightwingers colorblind society means completely ignoring the past and denying any grievance to those who still remember that legacy and battle it's remnants of today.

That's why Sharpton and Jackson deserve his special attention.

Sergey is right: Limbaugh is the real race pimp. Or racist pimp.

Also interesting from a documentary film POV. It's a rather large, huge, movement so it's still hard to pin down so to speak. No more can I judge a movement like this than a society at large that creates a constant state of wars and seemingly allow young men like Trayvon Martin to be gun downed.

I know. I can't help myself. ;)

True but given the organizers and the groups involved I think it was unavoidable. All these far left fringe causes came as part of the package deal.

Yes. And meanwhile we have a Republican congress largely inspired by the Tea Party pushing policy, law, and budgets that affects science, wars, women, gays, and so on towards a more revanchist state of being. Uninsured New Jersey couple, refused medical treatment in Bahamas while on vacation, come home after emergency funds raised

A New Jersey couple who were seriously injured in a scooter accident while on vacation in the Bahamas this week - and who were refused medical treatment by Bahamian and Miami hospitals - were flown home on Friday to Hackensack University Medical Center, according to a report published by Northjersey.com.

Diandra Barreto and Michael Gallinella of Woodbridge were riding on a rented scooter when they crashed on the tropical island on Sunday.

Barreto, 24, had a dislocated leg, several spine fractures and a lacerated liver which may have been bleeding internally for six days. Gallinella, 36, had broken ribs, a punctured lung and a possible neck injury.

But both were stuck in a hospital in the Bahamas for nearly a week because two hospitals refused to treat the uninsured couple, friends and relatives said...

I also got hooked from the first scene of the first episode, with Walter White, wearing only underwear and a gas mask, haphazardly driving the out-of-control RV.

Okay, I thought. I *have* to see how they explain this.

I wrote earlier that AMC (American Movie Classics) should change its name to American TV Classics. For one channel to be showing Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead is pretty damn impressive, especially when you consider that some of their movie "classics" have included Swordfish, Pitch Black, Escape From L.A. and Red Dawn.

I hear "The Killing" is a pretty decent series; I was thinking of seeing whether I might find that on Hulu.

Far-right groups from across Europe are holding a rally in Denmark aimed at setting up what they term an anti-Islamic alliance across the continent.

The demonstration has been organised by various groups who are concerned about the "Islamification of Europe".

The English Defence League (EDL), which is taking part, said it hoped it would be the start of a Europe-wide movement.

After not watching TV for years, we've been on a jag: We downloaded and watched the entire series of Breaking Bad in what felt like a couple of nights. Best TV I've seen, by far, since Homicide - maybe ever.

Went on to, in descending order of quality, Justified (incredibly good acting) and Boardwalk Empire (basically a well done soap opera - but interesting from a historical perspective).

Currently in the process of watching Deadwood - only seen a couple of episodes but it's of a really high quality. Kind of hard to follow all of the dialogue, however.

Okay, so you mention Homicide, yet I see no mention of The Wire...

Yeah - OK - The Wire was certainly very good. Went on a jag with that also, watching it on DVD after the series was over because I didn't get the cable channel. But I felt that it was uneven at times. Hard to explain, but with TV I always expect a downward tragjectory over time, when they start to smell themselves/get caught up in their own forumla. I felt that a bit with The Wire. The thing about Breaking Bad was that it felt like it kept reinventing itself as it went along. The characters really evolve.
