NASA Gets Two Formerly Secret Spy Telescopes More Powerful Than Hubble

What’s better than the Hubble Space Telescope? Try two, more powerful spy space telescopes given, with few to no strings attached, to NASA, by a little-known U.S. intelligence agency.

The scenario sounds like the pitch for a sci-fi story, but it’s now become reality thanks to the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), the 50-year-old U.S. agency responsible for managing all of America’s spy satellites.

On Monday, NASA officials confirmed that they had accepted from the NRO a generous donation of two complete, but previously unused and presently grounded orbital telescopes, each of which is capable of surveying an area 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA’s current workhorse.

“In January of 2011, I got a phone call [from NRO] saying, ‘we have some qualified space hardware that we need to dispose of or let someone else take advantage of,’” explained Michael Moore, NASA’s acting deputy director of astrophysics, in a conference call with reporters on Monday afternoon.

“There were no strings attached, we didn’t physically move anything, we just swapped a piece of paper,” Moore added.

Update on today's drone strike: U.S. strike said to target al-Qaeda’s No. 2

U.S. missiles killed more than a dozen people in northwestern Pakistan early Monday in a strike that apparently was aimed at al-Qaeda’s No. 2 leader, the charismatic and influential jihadist known as Abu Yahya al-Libi, U.S. and Pakistani officials said.
...
“This would be a major blow to ‘core’ al-Qaeda, removing the No. 2 leader twice in less than a year,” said a senior U.S. official with access to classified reports from Pakistan, where officials from both countries were working to ascertain Libi’s fate.

China still considers the Tiananmen demonstrations a "counter-revolutionary rebellion" and has refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing or consider compensation for those killed.

The government attempts to block any public discussion or remembrance of the events by hiding away key dissidents in the run-up to June 4, taking them into custody or placing them under house arrest.

Seriously though, it does raise some interesting questions about the NRO capabilities and why these were considered surplus to be transferred to NASA. Have they figured out new ways to get even higher resolution, software/hardware that does the job even faster than the processing power on these assemblies, or is it that these satellite packages have been on the ground long enough that it doesn't make sense to use them for spy purposes and is more befitting of a NASA mission.

It's been long believed that the NRO has a bunch of satellites that have Hubble-type capabilities turned towards the Earth so as to resolve features down to inches. This reinforces that belief.

One big happy tent update..

The Twitter catfight between Dana Loesch and Debbie Schlussel was pretty good, but the GOP vs Ron Paul delegate melee in Louisiana was much more entertaining. Here is a snip from the story at Alex Jones' Prison Planet.com site. Goodwin strikes again..

I'm sure a speech or two from Mitt will mend all the fences and get all the GOPers singing Kumbaya again in the big tent.

Prior to the 1933 election, the soon to be democratically elected leader of Germany had his goons raid the offices of opposition parties. On the eve of the election, the Nazis arranged to have a fire set in the Reichstag and then exploited this sensationalistic event to call for granting Hitler dictatorial powers....

Republicans have not called for arresting and executing Ron Paul and his supporters at state conventions, but the mindset is incipient. As history repeatedly demonstrates, it is a short leap from the sort of thuggish behavior demonstrated over the weekend in Louisiana to full-blown fascist mass arrests, political concentration camps, and executions.

70 jaunte  Mon, Jun 4, 2012 7:37:12pm

Amazing (or maybe not) dishonesty from Republicans on the House Committee on Natural Resources:

Maria was going to show another picture to the House subcommittee yesterday, this photo, which is a photo of a five year old child bathing in that kind of brown, poisonous water. The child is naked, as you normally are when you bathe. I’d invite you to click that link, and think about what, if anything, distresses you about it.

The photo was taken by photojournalist Katie Falkenberg, who gave it this caption:

Erica and Rully Urias must bathe their daughter, Makayla, age 5, in contaminated water that is the color of tea. Their water has been tested and contains high levels of arsenic. The family attributes this water problem primarily to the blasting which they believe has disrupted the water table and cracked the casing in their well, allowing seepage of heavy metals into their water, and also to the runoff from the mountaintop removal sites surrounding their home. The coal company that mines the land around their home has never admitted to causing this problem, but they do supply the family with bottled water for drinking and cooking. Contaminated and colored water in has occurred in other coalfield communities as well where mountaintop mining is practiced.
....
Republicans on the subcommittee alerted the capitol police (according to Spencer Pederson, a spokesman for GOP panel members), and after the hearing, the capitol police took Maria aside for questioning about “child pornography.”

Does Ron Paul want his supporters to cool it?

Ron Paul supporters booed Romney’s son, Josh, last Friday at the Washington State GOP convention. In Shreveport, La., on Saturday, Paul supporter Henry Herford Jr. , who has a prosthetic hip, was injured when security guards attempted to prevent him from calling to order a re-formed convention approved by duly elected Paul delegates.

That is the Paul side of the story, in any case. According to the Paul campaign, Louisiana GOP officials “ignored the vast majority of duly elected delegates and attempted to use illegally adopted rules to deny Ron Paul supporters an opportunity to attend the Republican National Convention in Tampa.”

Paul supporters had packed the house by getting themselves elected as Louisiana state delegates at lightly-attended caucuses. Long story short, this led to disputes over who would represent which candidates where, and the convention split in two. Another Paul delegate was briefly detained by police and had some fingers broken, according to the Paul campaign.

re: #83 reine.de.tout

Maybe this:
Digital image stabilization

Real-time digital image stabilization is used in some video cameras. This technique shifts the electronic image from frame to frame of video, enough to counteract the motion. It uses pixels outside the border of the visible frame to provide a buffer for the motion. This technique reduces distracting vibrations from videos or improves still image quality by allowing one to increase the exposure time without blurring the image. This technique does not affect the noise level of the image, except in the extreme borders when the image is extrapolated.

That's probably it. But I was lost by the 2nd & 3rd sentences:

This technique shifts the electronic image from frame to frame of video, enough to counteract the motion. It uses pixels outside the border of the visible frame to provide a buffer for the motion.

There are some things I can't get my mind to comprehend. Electricity is one. This, obviously, is another.

And so I have an idiotic question - how did they get that video? Does the camera get focused on the yo-yo at the center, and then just keeps the yo-yo at the center the whole time it's filming so it looks like it's suspended in air while it's really going up and down like any yo-yo would do?

Yes, a stupid question, I'm really curious though ...anybody know?

I think Walker will eek out a victory, but his term will be cut short when he is charged and then convicted in the John Doe corruption scandal at which point he will switch from darling to scoundrel in the GOP hierarchy.

Signs are pointing to problems with the unity theme for the GOP. The Paulbots aren't going away without a fight and when they do they will not be very enthusiastic about supporting Mitt.

Curiouser and curiouser

In an alert issued late Sunday, Microsoft told customers that the authors of Flame -- a highly sophisticated surveillance computer virus discovered on networks in the Middle East and Iran -- had figured out how to use Microsoft's own security system to forge digital security certificates, which then allowed the malicious code to spread undetected by anti-virus programs. Digital certificates are in part designed to authenticate interactions online and help protect computer networks from being accessed by unauthorized users.

Microsoft fixed the security breach, but was also forced to add the compromised certificates to its own growing list of "untrusted" certificates.

Microsoft said that since Flame was such a precisely targeted attack, a vast majority of customer systems that use digital certificates -- which includes U.S. government and financial institutions -- were not in danger of being infected, but said it had to take action because the same technique could be used by other "less sophisticated attackers to launch more widespread attacks."

Scott Walker's closest political aide has just been named in Milwaukee County Circuit Court Monday as the source of damaging revelations that undermine Walker's claim that he has cooperated with the John Doe criminal corruption probe into his current and former administrations.

Tim Russell, who was hired or promoted by Scott Walker even after he was fired for stealing from a state agency, was said in court Monday to have given Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Dan Bice information that showed that, contrary to Walker's claims, Walker was stonewalling investigators all along.

Milwaukee County prosecutors opened the secret John Doe criminal investigation more than two years ago after being stonewalled by Gov. Scott Walker's office when he was county executive, according to a newly released record.

Navy ships collide a day before arrival in San Diego

Two U.S. Navy ships collided Wednesday off the coast of San Diego, according to Navy officials.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the accident is still under investigation, but it appears to be a steering malfunction, Navy spokesman Cmdr. Charlie Brown said.

Both ships -- the USS Essex, an amphibious assault ship, and the USNS Yukon, a refueling ship -- were damaged, but the full extent was not immediately known, Brown said.

According to a U.S. Navy statement, the accident occurred about 9:20 a.m. PT about 120 miles off the coast of Southern California. The ships were approaching each other as the Yukon was preparing to refuel the Essex, the Navy said.

The steering malfunction was aboard the Essex, the Navy said.

Colliding with your fuel ship has to qualify as an EPIC FAIL.

We're actually doing the opposite; That's actually why DDG-1000 (Zumwalt-class) ships are being built. The Navy decided it could get better results from 7-8 Arleigh Burke-class ships than from a handful of Zumwalts.

re: #123 Kragar

I remember when the first stealth ship came out of the shadows, so to speak (or should that be from the Shadows?) It sailed into SD harbor and generated some news.

However, in the Navy's case "stealth" is kind of tricky to define. The problem is that a water-borne craft generates sounds and magnetic fields, not just photon emissions/reflections. So while a ship can be made "stealth" as far as being detected by RADAR, it will always, if it moves, cause a disturbance in the water, and a noisy one at that if it uses blades and/or engines to power its movements.

Non-metallic ships can get around the magnetic problem (important for mine warfare), but even they make sounds.

And, another problem is that a ship tends to be a different temperature than the surrounding sea (due to all the heat emitters on the ship), which makes it detectable by IR from space.

Etc., etc.

Zumwalt class destroyer

The lead ship will be named Zumwalt for Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, and carries the hull number DDG-1000. Originally 32 ships were planned, but this was progressively cut down[11] to three. The Navy expects each ship to cost nearly $3.8 billion. Including research and development, the cost grows to $7 billion apiece.[12]

re: #127 freetoken

It's all the more challenging than that. Reduced acoustic signatures have been the rage since WW2, and IR/magnetic issues are what they are, but it's much easier to make a low-radar-signature shape when that shape doesn't interface with an uncontrollable conductive shape (ie the sea). This shape, of course, also moves your ship around in potentially undesirable ways. This is why the Zumwalts have the characteristic tumblehome form, with all surfaces slanting back from the vertical.

Anything non-vertical is better than vertical (see the inward-outward-inward-outward profile of some European designs), but an outward-sloping shape is prone to constructively interfere with chaotic sea-surface shapes, forming an effective reflector. The only way to really mitigate this is a universally-inward-sloping shape.

Although, curses and curses, only an electrical engineer would consider such a hull shape desirable. A tumblehome hull tends to want to keep rolling if it starts rolling, and drive big swells up on deck rather than riding over them. It's an intrinsically less stable hull shape, requiring active stabilizers and roll-compensating tanks and so on and so forth. So, a ship that requires X tons of combat-system weight that would usually require (say) 2X tons of overall ship weight may require 3X tons of very-low-observable overall weight. It's a vicious growth cycle, and that is part of the reason the Zumwalts (at almost 15000 tons) are so apparently huge for their on-paper combat capability. They also have capability considerably in excess of what would be suggested from the usual metrics (gun caliber, number of VLS cells, etc) but that gets even more complicated.

Note that the Sea Shadow approach (technically, a Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) avoids these stability issues and others, but for a real-world ship it'll be too wide to transit the Panama Canal. Damned infrastructure crampin' our style.

Meanwhile, cost is considerably unrelated to size. Steel is the cheapest part of a warship. The DDG-1000s appear slated to serve as a testbed for eight bazillion different technologies that will make their successors more effective (we hope). Of course, that development cost will be amortized over only a couple of hulls, making each individual ship appear far more of a white elephant than she ought to be. See also: B-2, where an additional airframe would cost a small fraction of the $2 billion the popular media would lead you to believe.

More trouble for News Corp:

[Link: www.courthousenews.com...]

News Corp. has indefinitely suspended half of the voting rights of foreign stockholders to cover up its own willful noncompliance with federal law, shareholders claim in Delaware Chancery Court.

Although News Corp. "claimed the suspension was necessary to allow News Corp. to remain compliant with U.S. law requiring that Non-U.S. Stockholders not own more than 25% of the capital stock or vote more than 25% of the voting stock of a corporation holding U.S. broadcast station licenses," the suspension effectively increased CEO Rupert Murdoch's control of the company on April 12, the complaint states.

Non-U.S. citizens hold 36 percent of News Corp.'s outstanding Class B shares, and Murdoch holds another 39.7 percent, the company claims.

But lead plaintiff Forsta Ap-Fonden says the suspension could increase Murdoch's voting power to 48.5 percent. Class B shares of News Corp. usually carry one vote per share while Class A shares have no voting power.

News Corp.'s suspension announcement came the same day that the company reached a letter agreement with Murdoch, his minor children and certain Murdoch trusts, to waive their voting rights for so called "excess shares," which would otherwise boost their voting power.

But investors say the agreement "does not eliminate the voting power of the excess shares."

It "is merely an agreement by the Murdoch Holders not to vote such shares, [although they] will be counted for quorum purposes," according to the complaint. Though that agreement had allegedly been "carefully crafted to make it appear that the suspension will not increase Murdoch's voting control and entrench News Corp.'s board and management," the investors say the net result leaves Murdoch holding 48.5 percent of voting Class B shares.

"In a clear case of shooting first and asking questions later," News Corp. waited weeks to request certification of citizenship from stockholders, according to the complaint.

This happened "only after unilaterally taking away the voting power of 50% of the Class B shares it claims, based on undisclosed information and unidentified criteria, are held by non-U.S. stockholders," the lawsuit states.

Furthermore, "News Corp. has announced that any stockholder who does not respond or provide certification of U.S. citizen status will be deemed a non-U.S. stockholder and will be subject to the suspension," Ap-Fonden says.

News Corp. and its board could have avoided conflict with foreign ownership limitations by monitoring stock ownership, the complaint states. Investors call this failure to do so a breach of fiduciary duty.

This story is bad for Murdoch on a number of levels; first of all, he's just pissing off every other investor in News Corp, forcing them to demonstrate that they're US citizens in order to vote. Second of all, it draws attention to how much foreign investment there is in News Corp, and Murdoch's own foreign extraction; he became a US citizen purely in order to get around this particular rule in the first place.

Morning Lizardim from the warm and clear wild north country. All eyes are on our neighbors to the east today, as the current topic of this thread indicates. I'm honestly not expecting much; the GOP has gone balls to the wall to make sure that Scott Walker stays on the job and continues to wage his particular brand of class warfare. I have to confess, part of me wonders what could've been if the Republicans channeled all that energy and money into doing some actual good for the country instead of just playing cheap partisan politics.

Can someone explain to me how polling works? It just seems weird(to me at least)that such small samples can be at all accurate in predicting anything. In all my life I've never been asked a question by any poll taking organization,am I missing something? It just seems off to me,that a poll of say,1100 people, would represent a few million people and be right. This is a dumb question I guess, I probably should have taken a statistics class in high school.

Same goes for TV and radio ratings. How the hell can anyone have a clue how many people listen to a radio program on any given day?

When choosing people to be sampled for a poll, pollsters try to match as many demographic data as they can to the population at large. Speaking in plain English, if, say, the United States population as a whole is 30% black and 70% white, pollsters would try to ensure that they collected samples from a total of 30% black people and 70% white people. If the total sample is truly representative in all the important ways, it can be generalized to the population as a whole, within a margin of error to account for the fact that it is still a sample and not a poll of the entire population. The size of the sample determines the margin of error; most political polls try to put it within 5%, which allows for a fairly small sample size.

I only look at polls for trends, and only pay attention to absolute values when the results exceed 10%.

I also often wonder, what if the right wing DID take all that energy and money and did stuff to help people? It astounds me that they could honestly be heroes to the American people but instead choose not to be. How much money have the Koch brothers and others spent to get their way? We often assume they come out ahead, but do they really? I think of all the millions upon millions of dollars spent, not just to buy politicians, but advertising, paid spokespeople, think tanks and to just run the machine and it seems like it would just be cheaper to do the right thing in the first place.

The statistics on the general population are fairly known, mostly derived from the census data. Even though that has a 10-year granularity, it's close enough for government work. Then, when they are polling people, they select completely randomly and collect data on all those factors, like gender, race, political affiliation, etc. Depending on how the poll is conducted, they either keep gathering responses until the demographics of the sample match the population, or they ask the demographic questions first and then just stop if the person would throw off the sample.

A lot of banks lose more money in clever schemes-- like JP Morgan-- than they would have by following regulations, even voluntary ones.

There's a widespread myth that companies do what's in their own best interest. I don't know why people believe it, but they do. Very often, companies take on huge amounts of risk, because for the individuals making those decisions-- the vice presidents, the managers, etc.-- there's very little disincentive for them not to. A CEO can run a company into the ground and float off to another CEO position very easily.

There is more quality control of people working at Shake Shack than there is of CEOs.

Mostly because the actual, tangible performance of a CEO is completely unrelated to his pay scale or to any other form of accountability. Golden parachutes, "intangible benefits", etc., all serve as incentives to do whatever the hell sounds good without a thought as to what it will actually accomplish down the line. This line is "interesting":

...U.S. navy's China strategy will be able to sneak up on coastlines virtually undetected and pound targets with electromagnetic "railguns"...

So look at that as propaganda piece. Now place yourself as a Chinese citizen reading that. Essentially what you would be reading is "Americans plan on sneaking up to Chinese shores and attacking the homeland."

Virtually undetected for known unknown wars. Right. It has always been in the best interest of the military industry to hype up foreign threats.

Not really my problem though.

Yea. Amazing how often team management makes the "big" signing of a QB, RB, skill player without fixing their offensive line issues and then expects things to turn around. You generally end up with broken skill players instead. Chicks might dig the long ball, but all quarterbacks are equal when they're lying on their back after being sacked.

Minnesota currently has a similar problem in baseball with the Twins. We hired a new general manager (actually, the GM we had before the one we were replacing) and he made a number of personnel moves among the position players, but kept our starting pitching rotation. Except our starting pitching rotation was among the worst in the Major Leagues last year, and up until we started replacing them with Minor League callups, was THE worst in the Majors this year. Doesn't take a genius to figure out exactly why that didn't work out the way they wanted.

Case in point, the Vikings and the Colts from last season. #2 and #1 overall draft picks because the team as a whole was horribly broken and they tried to rely on one guy to pull all the weight. I love me some Peyton Manning and I still love the Colts, but it was only a matter of time until that all fell apart.

Oh, and for the history buffs.

I just started a new book - _Neptune's Inferno_. On the naval battles off Guadalcanal in WW2 (August - November 1942). By James Hornfischer, who also wrote the excellent _Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors_ about the Battle of Samar.

Can't comment much so far since I'm only 80 pages or so in. But he has a nice mix going of overview and personal level descriptions along with critiques of command issues, poor procedures, etc. And I hadn't realized before that a couple of the battleship captains from Pearl Harbor were commanding heavy cruisers at the Battle of Savo Island. And it also looks like this book will pay closer attention to the CLAAs (Atlanta-class anti-aircraft light cruisers*) then most authors do since I've read sections already that are first person observations from a crew member on one of them.

* - I'm mainly familiar with these from a couple of different war games. Not great surface combatants, but have an AAA suite that outclasses any other cruiser class of the period and is almost comparable to that of a "modern" USN battleship; e.g. North Dakota class or later.

I didn't see Porky's neither and I am thoroughly unembarrassed to admit it. I did, however, see a Melbourne production of Love Never Dies on PBS Sunday night. It's the Andrew Lloyd Weber sequel to the Phantom of the Opera. 10 years later, Christine, her hubby, and son - who is conveniently 10 years old - arrive in NYC. Hark, but there is the Phantom who they believed dead after the debacle in the opera house so long ago. But nay, here he is having conned Christine to NY to hear her sing "one more time." Understandably emotional reunion as the Phantom learns that their one night together produced this talented young son. (I think we were supposed to be surprised, too.) Will Christine sing against the wishes of her gambler, ne'er do well husband? Will her son learn the truth? In whose arms will Christine die at the end?

The music? Meh. Nothing close to the Phantom. But there was a dwarf.

Our IT Engineering group tests all the Windows updates and the selected ones are automatically installed globally on users laptops. The same with A/V updates..In fact if you do not have the approved revision you are disconnected from the network.

Tit for tat time. Romney wants people to think that Obama is to blame for the Solyndra bankruptcy, but Romney has his own solar flameout to be concerned with.

Decrying the White House’s decision to give Solyndra a $535 million federal loan as “crony capitalism,” Romney even held a surprise campaign stunt at the Bay Area plant Thursday.

But a day later, a Massachusetts solar panel company that received a state grant while Romney was governor filed for bankruptcy, according to the Boston Herald.

Romney personally awarded a $1.5 million renewable energy subsidy to Konarka Technologies, based in Lowell, a short time after he took office in 2003, the paper reported.

That company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection and laid off 85 workers.

So, Romney had no problem giving subsidies to solar power companies while as Governor of Mass., and then has no problem blaming Obama when a solar power company that received federal incentives went bankrupt. The only difference between Solyndra and Konarka is the size of the government incentive. Both were bets that the respective companies would create jobs, spur tech development, and have a long-term payback for the state and federal government. Konarka lasted longer than Solyndra, but its fate is still the same - bankruptcy.

That's kabuki theater - everyone knows that it's for show. They'll summon US officials and bluster about the airstrikes while the Pakistani government understands that they're benefiting from the airstrikes by eliminating threats to the Pakistani government at the same time (AQ and affiliates have no love for the government, though there is continuing evidence that the ISI harbors favorable sentiment for the Islamists fighting in the frontier provinces and continues to push its interests inside Afghanistan as well).

Bad shit still going on in Syria...

Heavy fighting erupts in Syria's Latakia province

(Reuters) - Syrian government forces backed by helicopters clashed on Tuesday with rebels in several towns in the coastal province of Latakia, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Rebels said at least eight of the fighters were killed.

"The clashes started seven hours ago. These are the heaviest clashes so far in the area since the beginning of the revolution (in March 2011)," Rami Abdelrahman, the head of the British-based Observatory, told Reuters.

He said at least five tanks and armoured personnel carriers were destroyed. Rebels have taken over police stations in the city of Haffeh in the countryside of Latakia, he added. He said "a lot of ambulances" were seen arriving in the city of Latakia carrying government forces casualties.

"Haffeh is totally surrounded right now," said an activist in the city. He said the clashes were in the villages of Bekas, Babna, Jankeel.

Meanwhile Assad has kicked out 17 diplomats including the US Ambassador Robert Ford...

Syria announced Tuesday it is expelling some diplomats from 11 countries, a week after those nations expelled Syrian officials in a coordinated response to a massacre and the government's violent crackdown on the opposition.

The move came as those countries looked for new ways to push for a halt in the violence, through the U.N. Security Council and other means.

And in Syria, an opposition group reported 24 people were killed Tuesday, and the government reported that three of its officers were assassinated.

There were reports yesterday that questioned Assad's claims that terrorists were responsible for the Houla massacre where more than 100 were killed. He claimed that terrorists (aka the rebels) were responsible for the artillery barrages and followed those up with execution style killings. Observers/journalists who got into the area found no evidence of anyone other than the Syrian military there - the military was the only one with artillery (and the observers saw them firing on other targets in the area). Those same observers further noted that it's quite likely that it was loyalist militias (shabiha) responsible for the execution style killings following the bombardments.

No one wants to commit their own troops to the mission. No one wants to send ground forces, including France, who is the de-facto leader on the Levant (historical relationship with Syria/Lebanon). An air cover mission (similar to the NATO mission over Libya) is unlikely because Russia and China will continue to block any UN action stronger than what's in place. The Arab League isn't going to commit troops, not when they've got their own uprisings/demonstrations to contend with.

So, it's all a bunch of talk unless the rebels can pull it together and gain ground so that the situation devolves into a civil war with a rebel force that can be recognized as a legitimate sovereign entity. Assad's done just enough to keep that from happening.

Pissed off or pissed on?

Erupting Urinal Soaks House Press Gallery

A big splash occurred on Monday morning at the House Press Gallery in the U.S. Capitol.

No, this wasn’t one of those unexpected guest appearances for celebrities to talk to reporters about some favorite cause.

This splash came from an exploding urinal. More specifically, something suddenly broke in the piping of the third-floor urinal, and water began spewing from beneath the men’s room door.

As the water flowed, it first surrounded the Associated Press’s working area, then spread toward both ends of the gallery, which was occupied by fewer than usual reporters and staffers, because the House is out of session until Tuesday.

Capitol Police officers, gallery staff, and other U.S. Capitol personnel moved to contain the flow. In doing so, they found a use, finally, for the gallery's stacks of unread newspapers, magazines, and other periodicals, as makeshift sponges and sandbags.

Employees from the Architect of the Capitol and other Capitol staffers managed to eventually stop the geyser. In came vacuums to suck up the water, and a section of the gallery carpeting was taken up – leaving behind a sticky floor.

New carpeting is to be installed in the early morning on Tuesday.
Some concern remained that water may have seeped through the floor toward the Speaker’s Gallery on the second floor, next to the House Chamber. That was still being checked on Monday afternoon.

Man hacks wife in front of kids, held

London: A 32-year-old Turkish man has been arrested in Germany after he butchered his wife in front of their six minor children and threw her severed head from the roof of their apartment.

Orhan Sircasi, a resident of Kreuzberg district of German capital Berlin, also tried to attack police officers with a knife as they tried to arrest him Monday, the Daily Mail reported.

He ran to the roof of his five-storey apartment building clutching his wife's severed head, which he threw to the street below. He was then overpowered by police and taken into custody.

His six children are aged from nine months to 10 years.

A neighbour said the accused made his children watch as he butchered their mother.

Neighbours called the police after they heard screams from the flat.

Local media said the man was often violent towards his wife, beating and kicking her if she displeased him, especially after he had been drinking.

IAEA: Iranian gov’t not cooperating with nuclear probe

The head of the United Nations (UN) nuclear watchdog on Monday said Iran is not cooperating with its investigation to ensure that the country's nuclear program is of an exclusively peaceful nature. It comes amidst reports that Iran may have attempted to destroy evidence.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Yukiya Amano said the Iranian government is not providing the necessary cooperation to enable the agency to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran. This is needed before the IAEA can conclude that all nuclear material and activities in Iran is for peaceful purposes.

...The DigitalGlobe satellite imagery from late May shows that two buildings at the same site as the suspected testing chamber have been demolished. The satellite images also show clear evidence of tracks likely made by heavy machinery during the demolition process and extensive evidence of earth displacement.

The revelations came after news of activity at the site's suspected explosives testing chamber building in early April. Satellite images then showed unidentified items lined up outside the building and a stream of water emanating nearby. This raised allegations that Iran is attempting to cleanse the site, using the stream of water to wash the inside of the building or the items outside.

"The newest image raises concerns that Iran is attempting to raze the site prior to allowing an IAEA visit," the think thank's founder David Albright wrote in a report late last month. "The razing of the two buildings may also indicate that Iran has no intention to allow inspectors access soon. In 2004, Iran razed the Lavisan-Shian site, which held the Physics Research Center (PHRC), interfering with the ability of the IAEA to investigate allegations that the PHRC was involved in military nuclear activities."

The UN can't possible think this is unexpected.

Spider Invasion Spooks Indian Village

Panicked villagers in a remote Indian state complained Monday of an invasion of giant venomous spiders that resemble tarantulas but are unknown to local specialists.

Indian media said that a dozen people had been bitten and treated in hospital, with two unconfirmed deaths reported.

"Initially we thought it was a prank, but later on we saw swarms of this peculiar kind of spider biting people," Ranjit Das, a community elder in the town of Sadiya in the northeastern state of Assam, told Agence France Presse by telephone.

..."It appears to be an aggressive spider with its fangs more powerful than the normal variety of house spiders," he told AFP.

The players are members of a union. The rich teams have their profits redistributed to the poorer teams.

The NFL is a partnership made up of team owners.

Each team owner shares equally in the profits from NFL TV broadcasting rights and merchandising, to be spent at their discretion. Ticket sales are treated a little differently, but the bulk of NFL team profits come from profit sharing.

So the GB Packers don't fit in with the "new" Wisconsin. The players are members of a strong union, and the team owners are socialists.

The Government Accountability Board has received complaints about robocalls, including some saying petition signers don't have to vote today to be counted in the election.

Not true, said Reid Magney, spokesman for the board. Petition signers still need to vote, he said.

"We're telling people to be skeptical about information they get from robocalls, emails, door-to-door canvassers, etc." he said in an email. "Rely on information from sources you trust, such as newspapers, TV and radio stations."

Daytona police chief claims judge has 'bias' in drug case
[Link: www.news-journalonline.com...]

The judge "skewed" the facts.

That's what outraged Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood accused Circuit Judge Joseph Will of doing when the jurist said he believed the word of an elderly woman over two officers who made a drug arrest.

In a strongly worded letter of criticism rarely seen from a police chief to a judge, Chitwood lashed out at Will, saying he'd "impugned the integrity" of the Daytona Beach officers.

The letter came a day after prosecutors confirmed they were dismissing the drug-possession case against David Beauprez, 46. The move came in the wake of Will's ruling against the credibility of the two arresting police officers.

"Will had no right to call the officers liars," Chitwood said Tuesday.

Oh, but he did....

On the night of Sept. 10 police, when they knocked on her door, told Beauprez's mother that they were investigating a 9-1-1 disconnect.

The officers told her they wanted to make sure everyone was safe. But they were really looking for drugs. Beauprez was arrested when the officers opened a drawer to found pills and a pot pipe.

The Judge's Ruling:
[Link: www.theagitator.com...]

The mother of the defendant was not shown in any manner to be a person unlikely to tell the truth. The officer, on the other hand, clearly lied to gain access to her home. A person who admits his lie in the opening seconds of his testimony before the court cannot be heard moments later to say that his first lie was his only lie. Culling the lies from the truth in the testimony of a single witness is, indeed, an exercise in futility. This court suggests that none of us has the ability to parse the truth that well, and it would be intellectually dishonest to even tread that path.

The rest of the ruling makes for great reading and includes:

What are the costs of teaching the community that law enforcement officers, whom ideally deserve the trust of the citizen, cannot be trusted to tell the simple truth? That no one is wearing the white hat anymore? That the ends justify the means? That the virtue of honesty is essential in our families and individual lives, but that same virtue is optional for the executive branch of our government in the exercise of its police powers? A nation founded on the notions we find in our Constitution is surely better than this.

Anthony Bourdain's Final Travel Channel Destination? Brooklyn

When news came out that Anthony Bourdain would be wrapping up No Reservations on the Travel Channel and moving his act to CNN we wondered where the always-entertaining sometimes-chef would cap the show off. And now we know. Brooklyn, of course.

With a little help from Michael K. Williams (always Omar to us), Bourdain has wrapped up a tour of the borough for episodes that presumably will air in the show's final run next year. Of course, this isn't the first time Omar's been comin' round to show Bourdain around. He was in the 2009 No Reservations episode shot in Baltimore (along with much of the cast for The Wire).

As for why Bourdain is moving to CNN? "We are all assuming a worldwide news organization can get us into locales we otherwise might have problems with. Libya. The Congo. Myanmar...Yemen." Now that would be something!

Anyway: The final location Bourdain will be dropping by sans reservations? Jay & Lloyd's on Avenue U and East 28th. You have been forewarned.

Little Debbie Makes Me Ask: Why Are So Many Would-Be Censors Stone Crazy?
[Link: www.popehat.com...]

"Commentator" Debbie Schlussel is the stream of bat's piss that shines out like a shaft of gold when all around is dark........
....
Much of Little Debbie's freakout happened on Twitter, the ideal platform for people who already communicate in word fragments, glottal clicks, and vaguely threatening grunts. I'm having trouble piecing together exactly what set her off on her Twitter feed. Perhaps it was mockery over her recent assertion that Snow White And The Huntsman should be read as Muslim propaganda. Perhaps it was criticism of her suggestion — apparently aimed at a critic who was a non-white doctor — that some doctors wouldn't be doctors without affirmative action.

At any rate, Little Debbie did not react well to criticism. She lashed out at critics, including attacking one for being a "fake convert" Jew and thus somehow inauthentic. When a few people suggested she had used twitter on the sabbath, she began to issue legal threats and demands, demanding retraction and threatening a defamation action, chortling that she would sue in Michigan to make things more expensive for her foes, suggesting that she would attack the careers of her detractors, threatening critical attorneys with bar actions, and ridiculing possible opposing counsel based on their sexual preference. Debbie repeatedly vowed that she knows the law, despite being under the false impression that prevailing plaintiffs in defamation cases get attorney fees. Perhaps she's confused about what country she's in. And, most of all, she pressed her theme that her detractors are just jealous of her awesomeness. [Note: If Little Debbie sends any of these down the memory hole, I have screenshots.]

Her threats were not confined to Twitter — she was also issuing legal threats and demands based on an article about her at Right Wing News. I'd quote it but the whole site is down as of the time of this writing, possibly because she ate it.

It's difficult to see how Little Debbie thinks she can prevail in a defamation action. She's a public figure, and she'd have to prove that her detractors acted with actual malice in saying that she tweeted on the sabbath. Even if she could do that, she'd have to prove damages. I ask you — how can you possibly make the reputation of someone like Debbie Schlussel any worse than it already is? Also, I must ask Debbie herself: you rant and rage about how Americans are insufficiently muscular and aggressive in the face of the various foes you perceive. Is this the sort of strength, the sort of bold Americanism, the sort of fighting spirit you are looking for — encouraging people to run to the courts to sue when someone is very mildly mean to them on Twitter? You sniveling pissant.

It's a long, detailed piece, and it doesn't get any nicer the longer it goes....

It's primary day in NJ too, but there's not much at stake unless you're a voter living in the new NJ 9 district, where you've got two Democrats battling for the seat (Pascrell and Rothman). Due to redistricting, they get to fight it out, and Scott Garrett gets a pass (I'm now in his district - NJ 5). Rothman had represented the area since 1997.

Instead of running against Garrett, Rothman chose to run against Pascrell. The demographics of the 5th are such that Garrett would win handily, and the Democrats would win handily in the 9th, regardless of who wins.

Instead of getting competitive elections, the redistricting has resulted in one-party rule in these districts, and the political leaders in the state are perfectly content with that scheme.

Barbara Lorman: I was GOP lawmaker, but I’m voting for Barrett

Dear Editor: Why would a longtime Republican and former legislator vote for Democrats Lori Compas and Tom Barrett? Why would a business looking to expand consider moving to a state that is ruled by right-wing extremists whose ideology has caused endless conflict? Why would anyone look up to leaders on a mission to tear apart public education just when we need educated workers more than ever?

I believe a national agenda is at work here that has little or nothing to do with us and a lot to do with changing how we will look to the rest of the nation. Ask yourself if you want us to look like those states where parents with enough money avoid the public schools.

That race has been hit with the ugly stick...

New Jersey Race Turns Ugly Over Jews and Israel

The Democratic race between Reps. Steve Rothman and Bill Pascrell in New Jersey has morphed into a battle over religion and political views on Israel as some local Arabs attacked Rothman for being Jewish and pro-Israel.

“One side says, ‘We want this Jew out of office’ and, frankly, it’s pretty unsettling…They emphasized [Rothman] is a Jewish congressman,” Ben Chouake, president of NORPAC, a pro-Israel political action committee based in Englewood Cliffs, told the Washington Free Beacon. Last week an Arabic campaign poster surfaced in the area, expressing support for Pascrell and urging the Arab community to elect “the friend of the Arabs.”

According to Josh Block, a Democratic strategist and former spokesman for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, “the pro-Pascrell posters…are not calling to elect the candidate who supports a strong relationship between America and the only democracy in the Middle East, one which is rooted in progressive Western values—women’s rights, gay rights, tolerance, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc.”

Walker enjoying talk radio megaphone today - - as always

It's 11:45 a.m. on recall election day in Wisconsin, and it's already been a busy morning at the office for Wisconsin conservative talkers determined to drive up Scott Walker's vote total.

AM 620 WTMJ morning righty talker Charlie Sykes is now into his fourth straight hour of pro-Walker, anti-Barrett voter encouragement.

Along with airing a live interview with Republican national committee chair Reince Priebus and conservative voter polling place testimonials, Sykes has managed to call Barrett a "crappy" Mayor.

Sykes has also broadcast rumors of voting fraudsters on their way to Wisconsin by bus from Michigan and intimated that more ballot shenanigans will happen tonight in Milwaukee, Madison and Kenosha.

Noon update - - righty talker Jeff Wagner picks right up where Sykes left off.

Every election day, conservative talk radio in Wisconsin gives Republican candidates a tremendous boost, but its value does not show up in any accounting of campaign support.

Thing is that both Rothman and Pascrell are both good on Israel, though Pascrell represents one of the larger Muslim communities in the country in Paterson. He's had to work with those in his district who don't share a pro-Israel outlook, so his views get tempered with that. With an election this close - and expensive in terms of a Congressional primary, every little difference is blown out of proportion.

For those that follow the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) last week's long delayed primaries were somewhat mixed although I found some hope. There were nine candidates in the Republican primary that were endorsed by the Religious Far Right. Four lost, four won, and one has a run-off. Gail Lowe who was the incumbent for district 14 lost. She was chair of the SBOE during the social studies curriculum change. Newcomers backed by the religious groups who also lost were Veronica Anzaldua (District 1), Randy Stevenson (District 9) and Jeff Fleece (District 10). However four candidates also supported by them.... current board chair Barbara Cargill (District 8), incumbent Ken Mercer (District 5), incumbent David Bradley (District 7) and candidate Marty Rowley (District 15) all won. Bradley was a huge disappointment to me because a strong moderate Republican (Rita Ashley) ran against him. When I asked Rita personally at a forum: "How old is the Earth?"...without a pause she said "4 billion years." Hated to see her lose. Gail Spurlock, a religious-right candidate in District 12, made it into a runoff against former SBOE member Geraldine “Tincy” Miller.

Madonna Brands Le Pen With Swastika

Kicking off her world tour in Tel Aviv last week, Madonna featured a multimedia backdrop for one song that included a brief image of French Front National leader Marine Le Pen’s face with a swastika on her forehead (h/t Jewcy). The symbol is white, and actually faces the opposite direction of the traditional Nazi insignia (as well as its Hindu antecedent).

However, Le Pen is still le pissed: “If [Madonna] does that in France, we’ll be waiting for her,” she said, and threatened to sue. It’s a touchy subject for Le Pen, given that her party still has prominent Holocaust deniers, such as her own father, who led it until very recently.

Taliban buying prisoner release

KABUL, Afghanistan, June 5 (UPI) -- Taliban figures held in some cases for allegedly attacking international forces were freed after paying off Afghan officials, leaders said.

U.S. military officials were quoted by The Daily Telegraph newspaper in London as saying dozens of Taliban members may have been released from jail after bribing local officials in eastern Ghazni province.

"We are talking about people who may have American blood on their hands," one officer told the newspaper on condition of anonymity.

A former Afghan intelligence official from Ghazni confirmed to the British newspaper that Taliban corruption has been ongoing.

It's been suggested: soil, water supply intermittent, too much water, not enough water, needs fertilizer, too much fertilizer, cross-bred with squash - I haven't yet found what the bottom line problem is. But that's OK. I have new ones planted, so I'll see what happens with them.

Court rejects appeal to overturn Prop. 8 ruling, case could head to Supreme Court

A federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday that it will not review a three-judge panel's decision to overturn California's Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage.

After this ruling by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, Prop. 8 proponents are expected to appeal the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, putting the battle for same-sex marriage on a national stage, reports the Los Angeles Times. The Supreme Court could decide to hear the case as part of its docket next year.

The ruling comes after a federal appeals court in Boston Thursday ruled that the government's ban on gay marriage, called the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), violates the Constitution and should be struck down.

Diagnosing plant problems is always difficult. I unusually just take a guess. Remember that it takes a plant at least 2 weeks (maybe more) to notice a change so whatever you do just keep doing it for a few weeks then try something else.

Amazing...check it out...

Live Rocket-Propelled Grenade Removed from Marine’s Leg

It was a medevac mission like few others that required heroic choices from all involved.

On January 12, Marine Lance Corporal Winder Perez was wounded in a Taliban attack in southern Afghanistan. The live explosive and a foot-long remnant from a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) remained lodged in his leg.
A crew of four New Mexico National Guardsmen agreed to take on the risky assignment of flying him by medevac helicopter to get medical care.
“Each of us on the aircraft had to agree to take the patient on,” Spc. Mark Edens told ABC News affiliate KOAT-TV in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“There was quite a bit of alarm among the crew at the time, as you can imagine,” Capt. Kevin Doo told KOAT. “If the RPG exploded, you know Spc. Edens and Sgt. Hardesty are working on the patient directly over him, shrapnel alone would have been devastating. And about 18 inches behind where the patient is lying is over 300 gallons of jet aviation fuel, and it would have been catastrophic.”

When Perez arrived at the field hospital 65 miles away, he was not brought inside. Instead Navy Lt. Cmdr. James Gennari and Army Staff Sergeant Ben Summerfield, an explosives expert, stood by his gurney and undertook the risky move of removing the foot-long section of the RPG from his leg. Wearing full combat gear and a flak jacket, Summerfield literally yanked the RPG from his leg, so that medical teams could treat his injuries.

Here is the video:

There used to be a time when journalists had to actually go out, investigate, and report on stories in person. Now they just have to sit in front of a computer and Tweet.

Zombies Roman The Ancient Empire? Clive Barker And Amazon Studios Say Yes!

In greater and greater numbers, zombies continue to swarm not only movies and TV series–the Game of Thrones season finale the latest example–but have even been referenced in a number of actual recent gruesome crimes. Now, author and filmmaker Clive Barker is unleashing them on the Roman Empire. Amazon Studios has set the Hellraiser helmer to rewrite and direct Zombies vs. Gladiators. The studio, part of Amazon.com, is planning a film in which a shaman about to die in the Coliseum casts a spell that rouses history’s first wave of zombies. It’s up to a gladiator to stop the spread of the zombie horde and save Rome. Are you not entertained?

What's that old saying about a woman scorned?

Group sets out to teach GOP a lesson and "Rock the Slut" vote

Watch out Republicans, here come the sluts.

Women's rights activists are banding together to "Rock the Slut Vote" in an online effort to register women to vote and cast their ballots against Republicans in 2012.

"If the GOP thinks that throwing the word 'slut' at us at this point is going to silence women they have another thing coming," said Susan McMillan Emry, the site's founder.

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh thrust the derogatory word into the political arena in February when he called law student Sandra Fluke a "slut" for testifying before Congress in support of contraceptives.

Following the national backlash over Limbaugh's name-calling, "Rock the Slut Vote" is now aiming to "diffuse" the offensive term, Emry said.

I liked "World War Z" not so much for the zombies but for the way it was an allegory of the way that a crisis spreads in the modern world: first we ignore it, then deny its, then we try to hush up and cover up its existence, all of which simply promote its spread.

Then the initial "official" countermeasures backfire because they were designed to combat an entirely different kind of problem and then we finally learn to re-think our way of doing things to regain control of the situation.

And I liked "Shawn of the Dead" for the writing and acting.

The rest of the Zombie canon I can live (or be undead) without.
