Roger Ebert: Don’t Tear Down That Wall!

Constant reminders necessary
Politics • Views: 25,782

Roger Ebert:

A great many Americans no longer believe in the separation of Church and State, and indeed deny it is a principle found in the Constitution. Yet the wording of the First Amendment is quite clear, and its importance to the founders is underlined by its being first. Certainly it was clear to Thomas Jefferson, who wrote, “I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.”

That’s why it’s alarming to see so many politicians proposing to tear down that wall. It’s most evident in the eagerness of states to permit the teaching of Creationism (in the guise of Intelligent Design) in public schools, despite the ruling of a Pennsylvania U. S. District Court that “the overwhelming evidence at trial established that ID is a religious view, a mere re-labeling of creationism, and not a scientific theory.”

The other high-profile test of separation of Church and State comes in the attempt to legislate birth control, abortion and other matters pertaining to birth. We now have a likely Republican ticket which would ban all funds for Planned Parenthood, outlaw abortion even in cases of rape and incest, and allow employers to deny women access to cancer screenings and birth control. The likely vice presidential candidate, Paul Ryan, would go even farther. He is co-sponsor of a bill before the house that would criminalize in-vitro fertilization.

John F. Kennedy:

I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute—where no Catholic prelate would tell the President (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote—where no church or church school is granted any public funds or political preference—and where no man is denied public office merely because his religion differs from the President who might appoint him or the people who might elect him.

I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic, Protestant nor Jewish—where no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the Pope, the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical source—where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials—and where religious liberty is so indivisible that an act against one church is treated as an act against all.

….snip…

That is the kind of America in which I believe. And it represents the kind of Presidency in which I believe—a great office that must neither be humbled by making it the instrument of any one religious group nor tarnished by arbitrarily withholding its occupancy from the members of any one religious group. I believe in a President whose religious views are his own private affair, neither imposed by him upon the nation or imposed by the nation upon him as a condition to holding that office.

This is a really great piece by Ebert - promoted this one to help get it out there.

Good piece by Ebert, this JFK speech by the way is the one that made Rick Santorum vomit. Agree with Ebert's point. Really, seperation of church and state is healthy to anything functioning democracy. This doesn't mean that religion should be limited but it's clear as day that creationism does not belong in a public science room and forcing kids to pray isn't right either.

I'm slowly getting convinced that the problems with clicking ding buttons (and other buttons) were fixed by going back to the last version of jQuery. Not sure if it's jQuery's fault or one of the plugins I'm using.

But someone also reported a problem where the formatting buttons in the commenting area weren't appearing in Internet Explorer, and the previous version of jQuery also fixed that.

From Mr. Ebert's piece, "The likely vice presidential candidate, Paul Ryan, would go even farther. He is co-sponsor of a bill before the house that would criminalize in-vitro fertilization."

I must say, this is one area where Ryan is being consistent. In-vitro fertilization generally results in "extra" fertilized embryos, which are later discarded (or saved in a frozen state, but it seems unlikely they'll ever be "revived").

This makes me remember a very conservative couple I knew in the mid-1990's, very nice people who I would say belonged to the "religious right", who were very much in favor of criminalizing abortion. But when they wanted to have a child and weren't getting pregnant, they eagerly turned to in-vitro fertilization.

I hope more Americans become aware of Paul Ryan's position on in-vitro fertilization. I assume Ryan will deny or soft-pedal it (anyone who can switch from Objectivism to Christianity is someone who can disavow anything he ever did, at a moment's notice), but if he's really co-sponsoring a bill to make in-vitro illegal, that's something people should know.

OT: just went to KHOU to see where the thunder was coming from on the radar and saw this headline:

Deputies: Naked Humble man arrested after pursuit

HOUSTON – A naked Humble man was arrested after a domestic disturbance call ended in a police pursuit, Montgomery County deputies said.

It happened just before midnight Friday when two deputy constables responded to a call regarding a violation of a protective order in New Caney.

The dispatch said a man was trying to break down the door of a residence to reach his ex-wife. As deputies approached the scene they saw a vehicle matching the description from the call, and said the driver disregarded a stop sign.

When the deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop they said William Moss pulled into a driveway in the 21800 block of McCluskey. But instead of stopping, investigators said he drove through the yard, through a gate and into the woods.

About a mile away he crashed, then jumped out the vehicle and ran for about a quarter of a mile, deputies said. Deputies said when he stopped he refused to cooperate and put his hands up so he was Tasered.

Deputies asked Moss why he was naked.

“At first Moss first said he was robbed, but then said he was with a married woman when her husband came home and he had no choice but to go out of a bedroom window and flee naked,” Montgomery County officials said.

A glass pipe containing burnt methamphetamine, and a pair of jeans was found inside his vehicle, investigators said.

However, it turns out he was not the person involved in the original dispatch call.

Kennedy made that speech precisely because the protestants that included the evangelical fundies were worried (fucking freaking out really) about a Catholic having that much power. Afraid he might try to weaken the separation of church and state in this country as well as the protestants more progressive view of birth control to further a Roman Catholic agenda.
Now all of a sudden Evangelicals and many other protestant sects want to do exactly that.

From Ebert's essay:

The use of in vitro fertilization has grown more popular, as evidenced by the fact that three of Romney's grandchildren were conceived in that way.

I wonder whether that's why Romney wouldn't sign the Personhood Pledge? He gave a verbal OK of the concept, but never signed the pledge.

OT, but I need to creeb cause I hate being broke.

My wife is a medicare provider but still works in the southern part of the state. She's at her clients three to five days a week. As an RN she get's a good hourly rate. However the rat-bastards at EDS refuse to do direct deposit because they make too much on interest during the time the checks are in the mail. So my wife's paycheck arrived in today's mail after the bank is closed for the weekend. Of course there is essentially nothing in the account right now and coming off the bankruptcy we have no plastic (actually that's a good thing.) We're short on most necessities (no eggs or milk, for ex) but got lots of other odds and ends. Unlike some we're in no danger but it's freaking annoying. Gah.

As one thing, I went to make some brownies from scratch for my son and got into before remembering - no eggs. Well, in about 10 minutes, I'll see how well Mayo works as an egg replacement in the recipe ...

Ah well, thanks for letting me B&M.

Isn't that two asses kissing each other :). But yeah, the way Santorum twisted the Kennedy speech story was designed to pander to the Evangelical crowd who are most hostile to the idea of separation of church and state in this country. He totally ignored that Kennedy had to make that speech in the first place because of the prejudices and paranoia that 1960's Evangelicals had about Catholics and Catholicism. It was a paranoid not unlike the crap you see directed at Muslims today with "creeping Shariah" being replaced with "Roman dictators."

Ohio Secretary Of State Removes Democratic Members Of Election Board For Supporting Weekend Voting

In a dramatic move, Ohio Secretary of State John Husted immediately suspended two Democrats on a county election board after they voted to allow weekend voting.

Earlier, Husted issued a directive canceling weekend voting statewide. In 2008, Ohio offered early voting on the weekends and thousands of voters cast their ballot during that time.

Husted issued an ultimatum to Dennis Lieberman and Tom Ritchie Sr., members of the Montgomery County Eleciton Board, to withdraw their resolution to maintain weekend hours or face suspension.

re: #44 William Barnett-Lewis

This is called Best Easy Chocolate Cake and it has no eggs. From Cooks Illustrated: Ingredients
1 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour (7 1/2 ounces)
1 cup sugar (7 ounces)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon table salt
1/2 cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder (2 ounces)
2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped fine (see note)
1 cup fresh black coffee, hot
2/3 cup mayonnaise
1 large egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Confectioners' sugar (for serving; optional)

Instructions
1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly spray 8-inch-square baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

2. Whisk flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt together in large bowl. In separate bowl, combine cocoa and chocolate; pour hot coffee over cocoa mixture and whisk until smooth; let cool slightly. Whisk in mayonnaise, egg, and vanilla. Stir mayonnaise mixture into flour mixture until combined.

3. Scrape batter into prepared pan and smooth top. Bake until wooden skewer inserted into center of cake comes out with few crumbs attached, 30 to 35 minutes.

4. Let cake cool in pan on wire rack, 1 to 2 hours. Dust with confectioners’ sugar, cut into squares, and serve straight from the pan; or turn cake out onto serving platter and dust with confectioners’ sugar.

Looks like a good one, cut & pasted that puppy out.

I substituted about 1/2 ~ 3/4 cup of mayo for the 2 eggs called for in the recipe. Mayo is eggs & seasoning so I figured it should work. Brownies are cooling right now so we'll have desert tonight :D

The likely vice presidential candidate, Paul Ryan, would go even farther. He is co-sponsor of a bill before the house that would criminalize in-vitro fertilization.

Interesting given that Mitt and Ann Romney have several grandchildren who were born thanks to in vitro fertilization. Mitt and Ann ought to be able to give Paul Ryan some perspective on that.

I would be shocked if Mitt knew that Ryan voted to ban that because I think he really just looked at the fact that this guy is popular with the conservative base and that was all he saw. Couldn't be bothered to look at Ryan's actual votes. Remember he's gone back on Planned Parenthood after in the past praising his mother for being an early supporter of theirs.

Still outgunned and outnumbered, especially since what the Zetas won't do is give you the chance to organize a posse. They'll just order everyone to remain in their homes on pain of death while they do a house-to house search. Fail to hand over your guns when they show up at your door and they gun you down. No show trial, or Red Dawn style mass execution, just "BANG, you're dead".

Those people who think they'll be able to organize an effective reply quickly under those conditions have more self-confidence than they really should.
