Wingnut Bloggers Claimed Photos Showed ‘Muslims Dragging Stevens’ - Actually Showed Libyan Rescuers

Right wing blogs bathe in bigotry again
Wingnuts • Views: 39,480

New reports from Libya confirm that the Libyan citizens the right wing blogosphere claimed were “dragging Ambassador Stevens’ body through the streets like Somalia” were actually trying to save his life: Video Appears to Show Libyans Retrieving Envoy’s Body.

Labeled the work of Fahd al-Bakkosh, the video centers on what appears to be the same tall, narrow window that witnesses have described as Mr. Stevens’s last exit. The witnesses said residents drawn to the scene had forced open the window and found Mr. Stevens behind a locked iron gate, pulled him out and taken him to the hospital. In the video, none say anything that shows ill will.

“I swear, he’s dead,” one Libyan says, peering in.

“Bring him out, man! Bring him out,” another says.

“The man is alive. Move out of the way,” others shout. “Just bring him out, man.”

“Move, move, he is still alive!”

“Alive, Alive! God is great,” the crowd erupts, while someone calls to bring Mr. Stevens to a car.

Mr. Stevens was taken to a hospital, where a doctor tried to revive him, but said he was all but dead on arrival.

More info from the AP: Libyan Witness: Stevens Was Breathing When Found.

A group of people gathered as several men pulled the seemingly lifeless form from the room. They saw he was alive and a foreigner, though no one recognized him as Stevens, al-Bakoush said.

He was breathing and his eyelids flickered, he said. “I tested his pulse and he was alive,” he said “No doubt. His face was blackened and he was like a paralyzed person.”

Video taken by al-Bakoush and posted on YouTube shows Stevens being carried out of a small dark room through a window with a raised shutter and being laid on the floor. One man touches his neck to feel for a pulse. Some of the men shout, “God is great.”

The video has been authenticated since Stevens’ face is clearly visible and he is wearing the same white t-shirt seen in authenticated photos of him being carried away one another man’s shoulders, presumably moments later.

Right wing bloggers almost universally seized on early photos of this chaotic scene, jumped to the false conclusion that these were the people who killed Ambassador Stevens, and promptly started ranting about barbaric Muslims.

In fact, those photographs actually showed Libyans rushing Stevens to the hospital.

Recapping some of the right wing blogs’ reactions:

The stupidest person on the Internet, Jim Hoft, demonstrated again that he’s also one of the most hateful people on the Internet: ISLAMISTS DRAG DEAD BODY of US AMBASSADOR THROUGH the STREETS of BENGHAZI! (Updated) …Another Photo! | the Gateway Pundit.

Hoft went even further, repeating a disgusting bogus report from a Lebanese tabloid: Horror!… Lebanese Reports: US Ambassador Raped Before His Murder | the Gateway Pundit.

Hateblogger Pamela Geller is even more vile than Hoft, though. This is how Geller portrays the video showing the rescuers trying to save Ambassador Stevens: VIDEO SHOWS US AMBASSADOR BEING DRAGGED FROM SAFEHOUSE IN LIBYA BY MUSLIMS SCREAMING ALLAHU AKBAR.

John Hinderaker of Powerline posted a photo of Stevens being rushed to the hospital with this comment:

I can’t tell from the photo whether he was dead at this time or not. I hope so…

Michael Patrick Leahy at breitbart.com also posted one of the photos of Stevens being rescued, with this comment:

Photographic images told a different story of the crowd’s conduct, however. Rather than aiding Ambassador Stevens, the crowd appeared to be dragging him through the streets. One image showed a member of the crowd carrying an unidentified man that appears to be Ambassador Stevens on his shoulders like a hunting trophy.

What the hell is wrong with these people?

It also dispels the weird rumor that his corpse was sodomized. It looks like they're pulling him out of the smoke filled safe room where he was hiding.

Strip away the context of any situation and you can make anything into whatever you want it to be, something the RWNJs are very adept at.

Funny how they never saying anything about people saying "thank God" or "praise Jesus" when shit goes down, because it's more or less the same sentiment.

The latest Breitbart post on the video of Stevens starts out by going right for the "barbaric Muslims" angle: BREAKING: Video Purports to Show US Ambassador Dragged From Benghazi Consulate.

There are a couple of updates as they start to realize they may have jumped the gun.

But they've posted numerous articles since the attack referring to the body being dragged through the streets.

Romney Kicks Off Hispanic Outreach Effort With Full-Throated Attack On ‘Amnesty’

Mitt Romney did not say anything new on immigration in a Monday speech billed by his campaign as an example of a new specifics-oriented push from the campaign. Instead, Romney reasserted stances that Hispanic advocates say have kept him way back in the polls.

Romney reiterated many of his existing views on immigration to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Monday. The only real difference following his campaign’s promise to offer more specifics on a raft of issues this week was a harsher tone than he’s used before.

Mitt Romney seems to think outreach is to tell people why they're stupid for not shutting up and supporting him.

they start with an assumption and take evidence that supports (and for as long as possible refuse contrary evidence.)

In this case the assumption is that all middle easterners (except Israelis) are evil. Some are occasionally able to suppress their evil, but in reality they all not only hate us but are evil.

It allows them to justify their own hatred.

Just as he did at the NALEO speech in June, Romney declined to say what he’d do with the people given temporary legal status under Obama’s executive order, promising only to “pursue permanent immigration reform” and reiterating his support for a path to citizenship for DREAM-eligible immigrants who serve in the military.

Imagine that: Romney refused to actually say what he was going to do.

There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax.

Mitt Romney Relies On Rick Santorum’s Claims To Defend His Anti-Gay And Anti-Choice Positions

ROMNEY: We will uphold the sanctity of life, not abandon or ignore it. And we will defend marriage, not try to redefine it. We need a President who understands that we will not have a strong economy unless we have strong communities and strong families. This isn’t conjecture or some quaint belief, it’s evidenced by a Brookings Institution study that Rick Santorum brought to my attention some time ago. For those who graduate from high school, get a full-time job, and wait until they’re 21 until they marry and then have their first child, the probability that they will be poor is 2 percent, but if those things are absent, the probability of becoming poor is 76 percent. In short, culture matters, and as President, I’ll protect our culture and preserve the values of hard work, personal responsibility, family, and faith.

Now, as for this film, as you mentioned in your intro there, that is a red herring and the media is going along with some in the Obama administration, pretending like this is a protest against some phantom video on YouTube?
No. It’s because the Obama administration dropped the ball. And they have not taken head-on this war on terror, and they have adopted a foreign policy of appeasement where our enemies no longer fear us and our friends can no longer trust us.

Matt Barber: Liberals and Muslims both hate the One True God

Yes, liberals’ desperate attempts to secularize America and eradicate her rich, Judeo-Christian heritage must be vigorously combatted. The left’s militant crusade to exorcise public recognition of God must not go unchallenged.

As Muslim radicals’ conduct murderous assaults on U.S. embassies around the world, secularist radicals are no less determined to kill freedom. There is, you see, a tie that binds. Both groups hate – with a visceral, all-consuming kind of hatred – the one true God. They hate all things Judeo-Christian.

But they also share a common goal. God-deniers want to destroy the America of our founding – the America of which George Washington said in his inaugural address: “The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained.”

Millions of Muslims, on the other hand, simply want to destroy America.

An Ex-Terrorist Walks Into a Conservative Conference...

Saleem, a Lebanese-born evangelist, has made a career out of speaking to Christian groups about his experiences with the Muslim Brotherhood in the 1970s and '80s. He claims to have been worked, at various points, for Saddam Hussein, Muammar Qaddafi, and Yasser Arafat, not to mention Saudi terrorists in Afghanistan. In 1979, he says he traveled to the United States on the terrorists' dime to build sleeper cells for the inevitable jihadist takeover, before—miraculously—finding the light and converting to Christianity.

But as I reported in a piece for the magazine last spring, much of Saleem's story doesn't add up. California police have no record of an incident he describes vividly in the first chapter of his book; the FBI says it has no record of meeting with him. And those who knew him before he began traveling the country under a stage name say they have serious doubts about huge portions of his narrative. Wally Winter, a former roommate during the period Saleem purports to have been grooming terrorists, told me, "He could sell swampland in Louisiana. I really do not believe the story about the terrorism."

There's some outrage brewing over the Newsweek cover. The only "Journalist" I recognized on the list is Mondowiess contributor Max Blumenthal. I suppose there some legitimate journalistic debate to be had over the cover but I haven't seen any yet.

Some things are so obvious they don't really require debate from reasonable people. Phrases like "Muslim rage", like "Jewish Rage" or "Black rage" or "Christian rage", are obviously stupid, inflammatory, and unjouranlistic-- referring to the actions of a small minority as though they're representative of the larger group.

US embassy in Lebanon is getting ready
US embassy in Lebanon destroying classified material

As a precaution amid rising anti-American protests, diplomats in the US Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, have started destroying classified material.
...
A State Department status report obtained Monday by The Associated Press said the Beirut embassy had "reviewed its emergency procedures and is beginning to destroy classified holdings." It also said that local Lebanese employees were sent home early due to protests by the militant Shiite group Hezbollah over an anti-Muslim film produced in the U.S.

In Washington, a State Department official said there was no imminent threat to the heavily fortified Beirut embassy, which is about an hour away from where the nearest demonstration is planned.

I understand Arabic to some small degree. The people in the video absolutely are not cheering the attack, they are cheering the news that the ambassador is alive. The rest of the shouting is mostly related to a desperate attempt to find a car and get him to it for the trip to a hospital.

These people are not medics or policemen. They do not have the right equipment and they do not really know what to do in a chaotic and dangerous situation. They did what they could, and quickly, at some risk to themselves. It's a disgrace that they are vilified the way are at Breitbart and similar cesspools.

Honestly I was quite upset at the violent level of outrage at the video that (maybe) added to the tension. I don't get acting violent over a printed book, or an insulting cartoon of Mohammed. Not my religion, not my culture so I do not understand at all.

But this? Now this is even worse. To smear rescuers as attackers is AFAIK far worse in moral terms. This incitement is a sin against ourselves, a step toward building hell on earth. Why fear theological hell when your angry/crazy neighbors wants to install a very real hell right in your zip code?

Now we have a very scary scenario. Now Muslim hating bigots have seen they can cause all kinds of death and mayhem for the cost of a small book burning rally, a video on youtube or just by printing insulting cartoons. Now the haters are empowered beyond our nightmares because of the willingness of certain Muslims to get violent over mere images. Now every bigot with a camera and internet can set a part of the world on fire with outrage, protected by our 1st amendment.

It's a red meat thing, and totally irrelevant to how it looks to the rest of the country and how it would actually work to run the country.

112 Page 3 in the Binder of Women  Mon, Sep 17, 2012 3:09:21pm

Because it insults all of us.

One derp on twitter said that Romney was describing the "hard core" Obama supporters. What a walk back. Romney supposedly wants to represent the entire US. Or not.

113 makeitstop  Mon, Sep 17, 2012 3:09:23pm

Josh Marshall offers solid analysis, as usual:

Fringier folks in the GOP say things like this. Gary Bauer did just a couple days ago when he said Obama’s coalition was made up of welfare recipients and vote fraudsters. Bauer though was smart enough not to put a percentage to the charge. Doing so deprives Romney of a vital wiggle room. He’s not just talking about some few percentage points that make up the moocher vote. He’s talking about everybody who supports Obama.

So if some Democrat says that if you support Barack Obama, Romney is talking about you, that Democrat would be on steel-reinforced ground. Are you one of those 47% of the electorate that the polls consistently tell us support Barack Obama? He’s talking about you. It’s not an exaggeration.

So the country is divided in two: on one side, the self-sufficient and high-achieving Republicans and on the other side the losers who think government needs to take care of them.

This is the caricature of Mitt Romney, who was born on 3rd base (in Ann Richards memorable phrase), thinks he hit a triple and thinks the broad middle class who’ve relied on government for student loans or social security or anything else are losers who can’t get their act together and take responsibility for themselves. Only this tape says that caricature Mitt Romney is the real Mitt Romney.

Big problem.

Weapons-grade DERP from Politifact, this time from the "Promise ratings":

Promise: Support Repeal of DOMA. Rating: Promise broken

From their post trying to justify this rating:

Obama took steps to nix it, but the law remains on the books.

Last year, the Justice Department announced it considered the law unconstitutional and would stop defending it in court. But that's far short of the repeal Obama promised.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Cali., also introduced a bill that would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, and Obama and his attorney general backed it in public statements.

Feinstein's bill -- called the Respect for Marriage Act -- represents the most serious legislative attempt to fulfill Obama's campaign promise. It cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee on a tight 10-8 party-line vote in November 2011.

That's as far as it went. The Senate hasn't held hearings or votes and doesn't have anything scheduled for the rest of the year.

On the judiciary side, federal judges and a U.S. appellate court have declared a section of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, though it would take the weight of a Supreme Court ruling to strike down the law.

Also under Obama, the Justice Department filed a legal brief arguing for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act and asked the Supreme Court to hear two cases challenging the law's constitutionality.

The only other progress we've seen on the issue relates to Obama's ABC News interview in May, in which he gave his personal endorsement of gay marriage. Although this gesture did not trigger any policy change, it reinforced Obama's position to do away with the law.

In other words, Politifact says Obama promised to support the repeal of the law, and he......supported the repeal of the law. Therefore.......Promise broken!!! Wait, what?

(Note, they have other ratings that would actually make sense here, like "Stalled" or "In the works")

Another one to add to the file of Politifact saying "See wingnuts, we're not on Obama's side either!!!!!!"

Greenfield used a picture of the ambassador being dragged by Libyans out of the compound to claim it is a “Muslim mob” composed of an “equal number of beardos and non-beardos” positioning the body for torture/murder as they take photos.

To my analysis it clearly was a picture of a rescue attempt by the Libyans in the photo, who are smeared by Greenfield as his killers.

A giant poolside mosaic featuring intricate geometric patterns has been unearthed in southern Turkey, revealing the far-reaching influence of the Roman Empire at its peak.

The mosaic, which once decorated the floor of a bath complex, abuts a 25-foot (7-meter)-long pool, which would have been open to the air, said Michael Hoff, a University of Nebraska, Lincoln art historian and director of the mosaic excavation. The find likely dates to the third or fourth century, Hoff said. The mosaic itself is an astonishing 1,600 square feet (149 square meters) — the size of a modest family home.

"To be honest, I was completely bowled over that the mosaic is that big," Hoff told LiveScience.

It is only September and the mud is really flying. I do not want to think what it is going to be like in October let alone November.

It's going to be great. The debates will be classic and we will not even be able to keep up with the debates treads.

And the response from the Obama campaign, way more to the point than the Romney camp BS attempt at walk back:

Romney has no plan. Whatsoever.

Of course he does. Cut taxes for the rich. Same plan the GOP always has.

New Rasmussen poll has Kaine +2 ahead of George Allen in Virginia. PPP polls have Warren +2 in MA and Baldwin +3 in Wisconsin.

Like I said earlier in the week, having Romney on the ballot is going to swing what should have been an easy majority for Republicans in the Senate, into a tie or slight edge for Dems.

Not only because more people will likely be voting for Obama (and thus are more likely to vote straight-ticket), but also the number of disillusioned Republicans that will stay home on Election Day will only increase as Romney digs himself deeper and deeper.

TPM Editor’s Blog: Devastating

First, provenance. Our news team is currently reporting the story out. I don’t know the provenance of the tape. It’s apparently been bouncing around on the interwebs before getting published by Mother Jones. But I know David Corn. And he wouldn’t have posted it under his name if he weren’t pretty certain he had the authenticity of the tape nailed. So I’m assuming the tape is legit for the purposes of what I say below.

As for the tape itself, this is a fine distillation of the most rancid version of the libertarian conservative worldview. Democrats are moochers and losers who can’t get their act together and think the government owes them food, board, health care and basically whatever else they want. You don’t need to look long to find this version of reality on the web. But this isn’t some right-wing blogger. It’s the Republican candidate for President of the United States.
...

1. How does the 47% remark square up with this?--

“I’m in this race because I care about Americans,” Romney told CNN’s Soledad O’Brien this morning after his resounding victory in Florida on Tuesday. “I’m not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I’ll fix it.”

“I’m not concerned about the very rich, they’re doing just fine. I’m concerned about the very heart of the America, the 90, 95 percent of Americans who right now are struggling and I’ll continue to take that message across the nation.

2. Afaik Romney's 47% remarks did not mention the military-industrial complex, the prison-industrial complex, the security-industrial complex, and the agriculture-industrial complex.

3. I've warned conservatives that they underestimate Obama's chances, but until recently it didn't cross my mind that Romney might manage to lose more decisively than McCain did.
