Now getting ready for the last of the big clump of Jewish Holidays--Simchat Torah. It's the holiday where we rewind the Torah (it's one big scroll) and start reading it again from the beginning. The last portion of it is read, then we start with the beginning. (And if you've read it already, please don't tell me what happens at the end of Deuteronomy without a big SPOILER ALERT warning.)

Congressman opens voting rights probe of tea party group
A Maryland congressman has opened an investigation of a group that has tried to remove thousands of voters from registration rolls across the nation in advance of the presidential election.
The inquiry by Rep. Elijah E. Cummings , a Democrat, is being started a week after Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) urged the Justice Department to enforce voting rights laws, citing a Los Angeles Times article detailing attempts by an Ohio offshoot of the group, True the Vote, to strike hundreds of students and others from voting rolls.
“At some point, an effort to challenge voter registrations by the thousands without any legitimate basis may be evidence of illegal voter suppression,” Cummings told True the Vote founder Catherine Engelbrecht in a letter on Thursday. “If these efforts are intentional, politically motivated and widespread across multiple states, they could amount to a criminal conspiracy to deny legitimate voters their constitutional rights.”

13% in 2012? But yeah I don't get it. I know that it costs a certain amount of money to file to run for Congress. Seems like a complete waste of money and time to run. But then again over 75% of Congress will be retained even with Congress's popularity at a historical low.

re: #68 jaunte
So, if he got beat 80% to 15% in 2010, it raises the question... what does he really want?
Well, the way it works in the mayoral race in San Francisco is that the Republicans choose someone--anyone, as far as I can tell, really--to run for mayor as the Republican candidate. Then they pick the Democrat they like in the race and support him.
The Congressional race is even more pro forma, since they really don't have much of a choice. In the mayoral race, Republicans can decide they like Newsom better than Gonzalez, but Pelosi has represented California's 8th Congressional since 1987, and she's not slowing down. So taking on the job already indicates a willingness to keep charging the windmill, and a lack of concern for your future political chances...this is a man who's pretty much agreed to be a sacrificial lamb, protestations aside, for the forseeable future.

Before I went off to college, one of the 4 stations we could receive (for our B&W tv) was the PBS station out of the university some miles away... and I watched it mostly for Dr. Who and Schoolhouse rock (for which I was a bit too old, but I liked it anyway - good music.) Oh, and they also showed reruns of Julia Child.

Digging through the G. Gershwin catalog of (written) music - his first piece, Lullaby, apparently was written as an assignment (according to Wikipedia) and intended for a small ensemble. Here is (I believe) a version for a large orchestra, done by Leonard Slatkin with him leading the St. Louis Symphony:

As a little kid, Sesame Street. Even had the playhouse. Enjoyed Carmen Sandiego too because I was and still am a geography nerd and that jingle will never leave my head. Reading Rainbow was neat too. They would always show it at school when I was in elementary school and it was a neat way to find out about new books. Now, it's probably Frontline because they explore interesting topics. Really, PBS is a useful service. There are so many other items in the budget that can and should be gutted before it.

There's a new Ken Burns documentary that's going to be released in November. I personally don't watch much from the local PBS affiliate because the programming is so poor. The president in charge of programming intentionally eschewed government funding in favor of local corporate funding. The result is uninspired formatting that attempts to offend no one.
That's what cuts in the PBS budget mean.
Besides the really important stuff like NOVA and all that, the clowns decide to show Lawrence Welk and geriatric Doo Wop reunion concerts.
I mean, who the fuck under 110 watches Lawrence Welk? They even missed the State of the Union broadcast last time, in favor of, you know who:

The same PBS station runs the McLaughlin Group by day, which makes me suspect that there is a resident wingnut in charge of public programming, oh irony of ironies.
I remember they dropped one of my favorite British comedies, Coupling, because some godbotherers complained about it and the Catholic diocese provides a good chunk of their funding.

The entire article which DF based his LGF page is nothing but a typical Rightwing hand waving piece of distraction. The Sesame Workshop is an independent non-profit production company, and is not a part of PBS or The Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
PBS has nothing to do with how much the president of the company makes (which is actually a very reasonable amount comparatively) and how much they have made on merchandizing sales. The fact that the Sesame Workshop is a non-profit and uses funds from corporate sponsors, donations, and merchandise sales to underwrite the majority of it's production costs actually means that the public is getting a real bargain. The amount that PBS pays to "purchase" the show to air on it's affiliated stations is only a small percentage of the actual production costs for the show.
Sigh...how typical of the Right lately though, to use an example of something that is actually working quite well and to the tax payers ultimate benefit to insinuate that loads of tax dollars are somehow being wasted. :(

Mitt Romney used "Big Bird" instead of "PBS" for two reasons:
1. Big Bird is a well-known character who appears on PBS. It was intended to make Mitt's message easier to grasp by identifying it with a particular character.
2. Mitt Romney's basic message about PBS and other government programs seen as extraneous was the same message as he has when he was a business consultant and later when he headed Bain Capital: The fact that a given thing or person is well-liked, even by him, will not save it if it is under-performing and/or non-essential at a time when the institution is swimming in red ink. Mitt can be honestly moved by that person or thing, but keeping it means hurting the needed turnaround effort Mitt will cut that thing or fire that person without hesitation.
Mitt's basic message distilled: I do not allow sentiment to interfere with proper fiscal policy and I always have my eye on making the turnaround work.

It's not underperforming, and non-essential is a subjective bit of bullshit. PBS isn't necessary. It is, however, good.

I can go to almost any store and get a white blouse and a white men's dress shirt and the blouse will cost more. Why? I have no idea. Hell, some places it even costs more to have a shirt cleaned and pressed for women's shirts than it does men's. The question is: "should the US government being paying for 'good but not necessary', given its bad fiscal situation?" The answer to me is 'No'. Cutting PBS funding thus has relevance to illustrate what priorities will be. To honest though, it is also a way focusing attention from far more painful cuts that will have to be done. Cuts to pork like highway demonstration projects and also defense procurement reform that will likely cost hundreds of jobs (though some of them will made up by other jobs elsewhere in the country). Best to use PBS to avoid talking about that reality.

No, his basic message in talking about PBS is that he's pandering to the wingnut morons who want to kill PBS and NPR because they're seen as liberal indoctrination centers, and because those same wingnut morons think that PBS and NPR get a much larger slice of the federal pie than they do.
Talking about Big Bird has nothing to do with the money spent or any other fiscal bullshit you're trying to convince yourself of, and everything to do with the fact that even now, Mitt is still trying to win over the far right base a month from the election.

First of all, that given is a false. We have a lower rate of interest repayments than we did twenty years ago. We have enormous amounts of untapped revenue in the form of taxation. Your given is a false assertion.
The answer to me is 'No'.
Necessary for what, Dark?

I don't consider that cowardice and Obama does the same thing. If either of the them started to really get into hard decisions about the budget in anything more than vague terms, the other man would bury the one who so dared under an avalanche of accusations of "cruelty", "allowing weakness" or 'being uncaring". Which is much of why we don't get real budget reform: Because both parties would rather demagogue each other's proposals to fire up their voters and scare the middle rather than act.

PBS is something like .00014 percent of the overall budget. It wouldn't do anything for the economy but throw alot of people out of work. Our tax dollars fund a portion of it so it remains public and not a corporate wasteland.
Conservatives can get back to me on Mitt's conservative spending(in the TRUE definition of the word) when he starts talking about cutting things that aren't insignificant. Like waste, fraud, incompetence and abuse in the defense budget. The cost of PBS for a year is less than a workday costs to run the Pentagon. If you want to go small, why not pick on Congressional salaries first, that's maybe half the amount spent on PBS when you throw in all the staff and office costs, plus other perks.

Mitt Romney isn't an empty suit, neither is Barack Obama for that matter. They both really do have some vision and ideas, but they are limited by the realities of political discourse. It is very hard for a politician to make the case for a budget cut that will inflict real pain: Many voters simply don't want to believe such cuts are ever needed and its almost always possible for other political parties to gain support by lambasting the cuts without suggesting a real alternative. It's stupid in many ways, but that's humanity.

I don't, however, have any sense of a vision or any real ideas from Mitt Romney BECAUSE HE WON'T ARTICULATE THEM. He's just running against Obama. He's not running for anything that I can see. Do you honestly think that you're catching some wink-wink example Romney is giving but ordinary people can't?
In a bizarre-ass way, you're right, but not in the way you want to: Romney's attitude towards PBS clearly shows he has no clue what is valuable about government, and how it differs from business. He really would run it like a business. And since government is nothing like a business, in any way whatsoever, this would be a goddamn travesty.

I don't hack on WHYY since they're the main sponsor of Terry Gross and "Fresh Air", which is one of my favorite NPR shows.

But the article you posted duplicitiously and egregiously confused the issue.
It's not underperforming, and non-essential is a subjective bit of bullshit. PBS isn't necessary. It is, however, good.
If Romney will fire people that are great performers who do good things in order to save a pittance, he's a moron.
Not necessarily a moron, but someone who obviously values pittances a great deal more than doing good. Given recent history that sounds very Republican and very political.

I don't think PBS is necessary, but I don't think almost anything is necessary. If I were to go by your metric, the government would be reduced to the courts-- that's all that's really 'necessary' in government.
So please, answer the question: What do you view as necessary in the government? Is it more than I do, or less?

Conservatives love to talk about what is "essential" and what isn't in government while conveniently skipping all of the things that business would refuse to do because there's no profit motive in it.

Thing is - in practice conservatives pay for all this stuff (at the federal level at least) because they are highly aware that letting things actually fall apart would be massively unpopular.
The only difference between Republicans and Democrats at the national level is that Republicans don't have the fiscal responsibility to pay for things; they prefer to run up the deficit and kick the can down the road to a Democratic administration.

I'm an alcoholic and I don't like to be around people drinking. At this point, I don't have any desire to drink, it's more just watching people's personalities change and I'm uncomfortable with that.
I don't know if your friend is actually interested in being sober or not. If not, then nothing is going to change. I personally wouldn't take on the job of being the money keeper. Your friend either wants to change or not. You can be supportive by encouraging him to join a group (my preference is not AA, but more of a cognitive therapy group, getting education and learning about one's triggers). You can suggest going to do things that don't involve booze and don't drink in front of him.

People still do coke?
Are you saying when he drinks he likes to party, so he does some blow while he's drinking? Used to do that. Thought it meant I could drink more and not get drunk because I was 'amped'...then I'd get really fucking drunk and need more blow. Shit's hard to quit when you start doing it regularly, and if you get stopped by a cop and have a gram in your pocket, you can add felon to your list of accomplishments. Tell him that.

Yes, that does sound like a problem and any kind of program will only work if you've had enough and need to change.
I used to drink on the weekends, partying until 8:00 in the morning. Then it started happening on work days and I was in real danger of losing my job and my apartment. More than 20 arrested at Occupy protest in downtown SF
Group members, many of them reportedly wearing black clothing and black masks covering their faces, began to block traffic, Shyy said. Some also allegedly vandalized vehicles and businesses as they walked.
When officers arrived on the scene they were struck by projectiles allegedly thrown by group members, Shyy said. One officer received a non-life threatening injury to his head.
...
Searches of the protestors' backpacks turned up items including hammers, an ice pick, flares and other weapons and bags of paint containing rocks.

Yeah, which is why I got a bit of a chuckle when I was told it was going to be a "close" election. Only way I could see it being "close" would be Chavez ordering the poll workers to keep it "close" so that he can brushes off accusations that the vote was rigged.

Nothing like carrying a "message of solidarity" to folks who kill our own country's military members and stone their own country's women and girls for being raped.

The GOP will use them if they get killed. They love dead American activisits. You'd see Mitch McConnell, Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, and John McCain wearing a Code Pink button in honor of these fallen victims of President Obama's foreign policy failures.
Doubt it, on a number of levels. First, the hate runs way too deep there.
Secondly, CP is very, very good at setting up situations where they look heroic to themselves but aren't in actual danger, and don't actually do shit for the people they show up to solidarity at.

They may not be calling for execution of perceived heretics, but a spin through the various GOP platforms, national and state, show there is a huge streak of radical ideology permeating the current party.
I may not vote for them that often, but I don't like the idea of the opposition party being so out to lunch, they tolerate people like birthers and creationists in their midsts.
EDIT: Scratch "tolerate". It's more like look the other way, or actually adopt the crazy shit; i.e., banning abortion, Voter ID laws, "freedom" in education bills that promote creationism.

When you vote for the GOP, you are voting for criminalization of all abortion. It is a party plank, and they have shown through a deluge of laws that they are completely serious about this.
I completely agree that you have to consider a party's full platform when voting, and not a single issue. However, the GOP has made it abundantly clear that criminalization of abortion is one of their top priorities-- along with denying global warming. The Democrats don't have a platform I love, they fuck up a lot of things, but they don't have things that are just outright medievally unethical and evil. They do not have to pander to such insanity.
And in many cases in the GOP, it is not pandering, it is true belief. I really think Romney is being honest when he says he'd be delighted to ban all abortion.

Well, that's where the rubber hits the road for me and the GOP. The current party doesn't like science that conflicts with their version of reality. Even Ron Paul, supposedly the brave rebel and a medical doctor, is willing to entertain the idiotic idea that evolution is suspect.
I mentioned this the other day, but even at the height of 9/11 trutherism, at worst, they were a tiny, easily ignored part of the Democratic Party. They did not drive narrative. You can't say that about today's GOP. The lunatics are not only running the asylum, they're doing it with the blessing of the rank and file.
I've also mentioned this before: I don't take any pleasure in saying stuff like this. I may not agree with some conservative/GOP ideas, but we need healthy political debate in this country. That's not possible with the current Republican crew.
This bothers me. A lot. A Democratic version of Karl Rove's permanent supermajority is not something I yearn for. But having the GOP literally flirting with becoming a Christian Taliban is bad for all of us.

I live in a REALLY conservative place. I knew that before moving here.I could also actually talk to the conservatives here before 9/11 and we could often reach agreement on certain things(like education for example),have a respectful conversation. It makes me sad that it's a rare thing when that happens now. How can things move forward if we can't talk things out?
It wasn't 3 months after 9/11 and the local GOP started in with the most nasty and insulting nonsense I've ever come across. Remember those horrendous Max Cleland ads that Saxby Chambliss' campaign ran? That was just one thing, there were lots more. Every business had FOX news blaring 24/7. Conservative talk radio began telling everyone liberals were the real terrorists. I saw bumper stickers that were "Liberal Hunting Licence"s. Other ones with Nancy Pelosi with bullet holes in her head. And then if your neighbors knew you were liberal they stopped talking to you. They wouldn't let their kid play with yours. The birthday party invites stopped, they wouldn't take your calls. Because of fear being stoked by assholes who care about nothing more than winning politically. By pastors and ministers and priests in the churches. Democrats didn't start that shit,at least not where I live.
That's the kind of stuff I have a hard time reconciling and I'm a pretty forgiving and reasonable human. Friends, neighbors and families have been driving apart by this bullshit and it really needs to stop. I just don't know how to get there with assholes like Beck,Limbaugh and the goons at Fox having such a big influence. I blame the GOP leadership for letting it get this far. They could have done something about this early on and they chose not to,sometimes even joining in themselves.

I don't think they "let" it. I think they actively coordinate efforts. We see it every day. In stark terms there is no equivalence between the GOP and the current Democratic party.
As for people with opposing viewpoints there seems to be a lack of them that aren't intellectually rotted to the core. I suppose we could have a discussion on 'limited government' and what that means and I could see myself respecting a position I don't agree with. But it seems that discussion will never happen without devolving into POTUS being a socialist (and therefore Stalin). Class warfare is typically dropped, which usually means poor or middle class libertarians defending the wealthy having lower tax rates by antagonizing those who believe raising taxes on the wealthy are engaging in class warfare, an irony of sorts. Then the end result is an indictment of liberalism.
This is the result of a ho hum discussion on limited government. Leaves me a touch cynical.

I saw it starting in the 80s during Reagan years and his embrace of Falwell and the supposed Silent Majority. Maybe it was just more obvious here in Texas when the chairman of the Republican party here in Houston was openly advocating replacing the Constitution with biblical law. That's when a coordinated effort began to take over local politics, starting with school boards, to turn the US into a right wing theocracy. It wasn't a secret - they were quite open and proud of it.

re: #150 Dark_Falcon
It's still a bullshit message, D_F; PBS and NASA (for another example) get next to nothing in the federal budget as it is and their benefits far outweigh their costs to the American public.

I paused, Slowly looking her up and down And said calmly.

I made up with her later on...Crazy night.

In August, The New York Times wondered aloud what the rest of the political world wanted to know: Does Sheldon Adelson's effort to put Mitt Romney in the White House have anything to do with the federal criminal investigation into his company's business practices?
The Times editorial page mused that "since Mr. Adelson's financial future is riding on the outcome of these federal investigations, it is legitimate to ask whether he has motivation for supporting the Republican ticket so lavishly, beyond his sharp disagreement with the Obama administration's position on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process."

So, seriously. Fuck them.
If someone told me I was a sinner and was going to hell, I'd probably rotflamo right in front of them. Then tell them, "I'll see you there."

The same thing happened between my family and one older sister. I've posted about the situation here a few times. She too the same path, too - she got sucked into Amway and later joined a fundie church. Now most of the communication she has with the family is sending anti-Obama emails and telling us how we're all hopeless sinners and we're going to hell.

I had a similar experience in the early 90s with my two dearest friends in Chicago. The three of us were inseparable throughout junior high, high school, and college. I moved to Texas in 1973 but we remained very close with weekly phone calls and shared vacations. Until they found Jesus and joined some early megachurch in the Chicago area (actually featured back when on 60 Minutes as a cult).
All of a sudden, our weekly phone calls stopped. When I called either one of them, all I got was god-speak. I would try to change the subject but it never worked. Then I was going to hell. I was evil. I listened to satanic music, i.e. the Beatles, Moody Blues, and Zeppelin. (We were Beatles forevah as kids so this shocked me to my core.)
It broke my heart. Still does. How could anyone throw away such love and friendship like that? How could they deny all those years and our experiences growing up together, laughing, crying, sharing? I will never understand this.

Back when I worked at the Catholic high school, there was a couple of seniors who had been going out for TWO YEARS, which is like forty years married for grown-ups.
They were going out after school to a fancy dinner to celebrate their anniversary.
His friends decided to decorate his car.
It worked fine on one side. "Tony and Krissy 4-Evah" kind of stuff.
Then they got bored.
The other side was decorated with swastikas and penises.
Which for some reason sort of freaked Tony out when he found it in that condition (seeing that side first). He told the dean.
There was hell to pay.
The young morons in question couldn't quite articulate what the hell they had been thinking.

12 Silly Ways to Predict the Election
"Ladbrokes, the British bookmaker, has set the odds of a Obama victory at 4-to-1 and Romney win at 4-to-11. It also had Obama as the favorite in 2008."
Surprised that the wingnuts haven't been posting this one to all four corners of the country:
Updated election forecasting model still points to Romney win, University of Colorado study says
An update to an election forecasting model announced by two University of Colorado professors in August continues to project that Mitt Romney will win the 2012 presidential election.
According to their updated analysis, Romney is projected to receive 330 of the total 538 Electoral College votes. President Barack Obama is expected to receive 208 votes -- down five votes from their initial prediction -- and short of the 270 needed to win.
*snip*
Of the 13 battleground states identified in the model, the only one to change in the update was New Mexico -- now seen as a narrow victory for Romney. The model foresees Romney carrying New Mexico, North Carolina, Virginia, Iowa, New Hampshire, Colorado, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida. Obama is predicted to win Michigan and Nevada.
In Colorado, which Obama won in 2008, the model predicts that Romney will receive 53.3 percent of the vote to Obama’s 46.7 percent, with only the two major parties considered.

This would be why in many states, you can't drive with your friends in the car for a set period of time, like 6 months, or a year.
It ought to go to 21, but no such luck.

Personally, I'm casting a nervous eye on the Venezuelan elections.
No, I'm not from there. No, I haven't lived there.*
They are people, though, human beings, and they deserve better than Chavez.
*I did write a 5th grade report on Venezuela, and passed out little bits of chocolate as part of my report, thereby reaching the peak of my grade-school popularity.

I agree about the need for honest debate and I'd throw compromise in there too.
Yeah, this is a really important point. Compromise is a big casualty of the current GOP mindset. It's a become a cliché at this point, but Reagan would be considered a heretic today.
As for your experiences with your neighbors: wow. I just don't even know where to begin with that. It's one thing to ostracize an adult because of their political leanings, but their kids? Awful. Just awful.

Going another way...because I overthink everything...
Why do humans create governments? Is it so we can have a place to belong that has some order? Do we do it so some people have alot and others have very little? And what purpose does government have but to provide the best possible world for the largest possible number of people?
I would rather see my tax dollars spent to provide a framework for an orderly and prosperous society more than anything else. By orderly I don't mean "law and order"so much as having things working so there's not fear, chaos and panic. An anxious society is not a smart or functional society that makes good choices. Roads that work, education of quality for all,a healthcare system that doesn't bankrupt a family if Dad gets in an accident or Mom has cancer. A healthcare system that doesn't make you stick with a job you hate because you can't afford to leave that job for the insurance. Where teachers are paid a salary that allows them to be middle class. I want parks that are treasured and not seen as resources to be exploited, where everyone takes ownership and pride in those things and the funding isn't continually slashed to the bone. Where libraries are pointds of pride and funded to reflect that. Why is this so bad? How did it become such a contentious thing that our government work FOR us?

Yeesh. You guys make the virulent racism on the one side of my family look tame in comparison. Condolences.
Although as I said before, I'm going to have to deal racist seniors in a South Carolina retirement community who watch Fox News 9 hours a day this Thanksgiving. It's not going to be pleasant regardless of who wins the presidency.

It's not overthinking. We need some semblance of order so we can function properly as a society. The problem is that humans are imperfect creatures, and we still have a lot of survival-by-fear hard wired into our systems.

re: #334 Mattand
Yeah,I can say, without being hyperbolic, that I've paid a big price socially and family wise for being unashamedly liberal. I am not at all in your face about it,but I don't pretend to be conservative either. My son has paid more than I though, the kids here have been just freaking mean, not one of them has ever made an effort to befriend him because of his autism,it makes it too difficult I guess for them to bother. But when he was young, the parents shunned me,and in turn him because I just refused to play the game,I couldn't.
In my town,if your kid isn't involved on some level in sports,or you don't belong to a church, there's obstacles to being part of things. It's not impossible, just harder. After living in GA for 25 yrs,in this area for 15, I ended up finding friends at the dog park. But even there,it's not easy, alot of people are anti Obama and even bitch about their money going to the dog park they're sitting in bitching about. I've defriended alot of crazy fuckers on Facebook and just stay away from the nutbars.

That sounds utterly horrible (and like an alien land to me, compared to where I am, i.e. Canada). Sorry you have to deal with it. Are you stuck in that area for job/financial reasons?

re: #337 Interesting Times
Yes. We can't sell our house without taking a loss, and there are no jobs elsewhere that pay what my husband's job does here. Metro Atlanta has a fairly high pay scale for what he does(building systems maintenance). We'd like to move out West or to the NE USA,but the jobs there don't pay enough to cover living expenses and no company will pay for all the moving expenses, etc involved in a cross country move. We're trying to get out of here, but the main obstacle is the house. It's 30 yrs old,we've totally gutted and remodelled it inside and out,but we're surrounded by brand new houses that people would rather buy than ours. Or we'd be outta here, like last week, lol.
