Bushmaster Gun Company Shamed Into Removing “Man Card” Advertisement

Masculinity issues
US News • Views: 29,962

In the aftermath of the Newtown shootings, the company that manufactured the semi-automatic rifle used by Adam Lanza, Bushmaster, came under fire themselves for an ad campaign that featured “Man Cards.”

An image from that horrible campaign:

Today, while writing the previous post, I discovered that sometime in the past 24 hours Bushmaster has pulled down the entire Man Cards page. Instead of their bizarre Freudian masculinity hangups, you’ll now see this error:

I actually saved a copy of the SWF file for the Man Cards page yesterday, but there are a lot of supporting data files I couldn't download so it doesn't really work on its own.

re: #2 Gus

In a world of rapidly depleting testosterone...

Seriously Bushmaster? Seriously? I honestly don't believe the world has gotten any less manly over the last 50 years.

I have a Jeep that I turn my own wrenches on. It has the big, awesome, inefficient 4.0L inline 6 engine. I drive it with glee, especially when I've got the 4 wheel drive engaged.

Normally, I use the 4WD to drive right into the middle of a storm in the Sierra Nevadas near Lake Tahoe, so I can go take unnecessary risks on double-black diamond ski terrain.

I keep in shape by lifting free weights and believe that those weight machine things are for sissies.

I learned how to shoot and maintain guns as a Boy Scout.

I've got an excellent beard right now.

I know how to weld and use machine tools to make stuff out of metal.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, have LGBT friends, and I'm married to the most rabid Feminazi I know. None of this stuff stops me from being a macho, redneck idiot. Not even my wife.

If you fear for the testosterone of the Millenials and are unsure of how to be manly in this modern world, I have a suggestion: Grow a pair.

Hey dumbasses, I'm a man. I like combat sports, target shooting, crude jokes and Football.

You will also find me around the house sweeping, doing dishes, laundry and whatever else need to be done. There's almost nothing I wouldn't do for my wife and the children we care for (not our kids but darned close enough).

So yes, I'm a man and I don't need a military level assault rifle to prove it.

12 DelusionDeluge  Wed, Dec 19, 2012 2:36:27pm

Fox/Beck/Limbaugh/NRA make a KILLING off this very notion. There's a huge market for people who think having to treat other people with respect and dignity is emasculating. Better to be peddled fear. It's sickening. It's a demographic that thinks they are oppressed when the hardest thing they've ever had to overcome is perhaps a member of the "PC police" gently asking them to refrain from telling a particularly racist and/or misogynist joke in public.

100% agreed. I have no compunction about commenting on another man's good looks (normally just to my wife). But then, I'm the straightest straight guy I know, and have no insecurity about that at all.

FYI - I do none of those things and I'm just as much a man as you. My manliness comes from taking care of my family, teaching my kids right from wrong, loving my wife and having character and keeping my word.

I do not want to imply that you aren't manly. Because you are. Taking care of your family and caring for and respecting your wife are some of the biggest tests any of us face.

I just do a bunch of stuff that's traditionally manly and I have a macho/redneck streak. I've also figured out how to respect women as equals and that I don't have to be a sexist or racist pig as a part of that [macho/manliness]. It's not a zero sum game.

What if I'm fixing a pink bicycle? Is it still manly?

That's probably well into the grey areas, but I don't think it matters, nor does constructing any kind of context to make manly or not manly. The important bit to me is about how you feel about yourself. There's a whole slew of stuff that's traditionally things that "A Man Should Know" that you might learn to feel you are a competent Real Man.

However, stuff that is in the "A Man Should Know Or Do" category doesn't imply that any of it is only for men or really all men should do it. I was brought up to believe that I should care for my own stuff, know how to survive in the mountains and other things. I was also brought up to be able to cook my own meals and wash my own clothes.

It's more about being a capable person and doing things you enjoy. I love working on that Jeep, that's really why I do it. It's just fun to be able to hold it up as "manly".

If that makes any sense. Traditionally male stuff doesn't have to be exclusionary and likewise, being male in this world doesn't mean you have to be a bearded wildman who knows how to duct-tape a log to the side of his truck to nurse a broken axle back home. It's more important to be a good father and good at your hobbies and profession (if you're a guy), and if you're a woman, that all goes the same.

This from the author of the topic of the previous thread:

Atheists: No God, no reason, just whining
Superstar atheists are motivated by anger -- and boohoo victimhood.

Excerpt:

First off, there's atheist victimology: Boohoo, everybody hates us 'cuz we don't believe in God. Although a recent Pew Forum survey on religion found that 16% of Americans describe themselves as religiously unaffiliated, only 1.6% call themselves atheists, with another 2.4% weighing in as agnostics (a group despised as wishy-washy by atheists). You or I might attribute the low numbers to atheists' failure to win converts to their unbelief, but atheists say the problem is persecution so relentless that it drives tens of millions of God-deniers into a closet of feigned faith, like gays before Stonewall.

Car crash from hell on LIE this afternoon. 1 dead, dozens injured:

At an afternoon news conference, Suffolk Fire Rescue and Emergency Services Commissioner Joel Williams and Deputy Suffolk County Police Department Inspector Kevin Fallon said the accident resulted in one fatality.

At least 18 other people were injured in the crash involving three tractor trailers and at least 25 vehicles, officials said.

It happened near Exit 68 in Shirley just before 3 p.m.

Twelve of those injured in the crash were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Preliminary information indicates that a tractor-trailer filled with wood-chips and mulch, heading east to a landfill, rear-ended and then plowed through more than a dozen vehicles that had slowed to merge from three lanes to one near Exit 68, CBS 2′s Jennifer McLogan reported.

Vehicles began careening, spinning and burst into flames, including the tractor-trailer.
