Here’s something to look forward to — the fringiest of the fringe right Tea Party pseudo-libertarian Senators is pretty obviously gearing up for a run at the Presidency.

Rand Paul’s chief strategist is leaving his Senate post to run the Kentucky Republican’s political shop.

Doug Stafford, who is widely seen as Paul’s closest adviser, will soon resign as chief of staff to manage Paul’s national political operation. Today’s news is the clearest sign yet that Paul, a potential 2016 contender, is building a presidential campaign.

This is a guy who’s a big fan of Alex Jones, who appears frequently on Jones’s psycho conspiracy show, and he’s talking about running for President. Just sayin’.

Yep. This is what the Republican party has devolved to. From having its party leader in the Senate co-sponsor the CRA of 1964 to having a sweet heart in 2013 who has problems with it. One of the reasons why I know Darwin was right about evolution is that the Republican Party repeatedly shows itself to be a big example of devolution.

I served with the Yankee army in Kentucky, and married an Etown girl. It’s very beautiful, especially east of Bardstown. I’ve done archaeology in the mountains, and flown aerial photography runs. Y’all have really screwed it up.

So as of right this instant, Paul and Cruz are “unofficial but obvious”. Santorum will be back. Bush (Jeb) appears to be setting up a run. I think there are more, actually, but that’s my pencil list of people most likely to get the nomination.

I really want to mention some of the also-runs. Huntsman, for example, will probably run - and has as much chance as he did in 2012. Rubio is obviously running but has destroyed his nomination chances by pushing (watered down) immigration reform. Pawlenty will try again, I think, and will be laughed off the stage early. again. I think Jindal will explore it but ultimately decide not to run. Kasich and Snyder may explore it as well, but it depends on if (and how severely) they lose in 2014.

With the exception of Jindal, all the Republican governors are possibles. We won’t really know who wants to run till after we see who wins or loses and by what margins. Any governor who loses a blue state by less than 10 points is a possibility. Any who actually win re-election will be asked. Red states won by at least 10 points are possibles, while losing… no.

The humidity is really low too. Yesterday it never got above 33%, today it got down to 5%, an unusually low reading for the beginning of May. The hills are already brown and a lot of small fires are breaking out around the edges of the SF Bay Area.

I came home from a 3 year stint at Pearl Harbor the morning of the Oakland hills fire. I’ll never forget that day.. Hot dry winds blowing in your face and a disaster brewing.

Rand Paul will capitalize on the alt-media outlets to build up his ground game ahead of 2016. Doesn’t matter to him that he’s rushing headlong in to the fever swamps of rabid conspiracy country. It’s ground his dad tread, and it worked out well for him (he was a regular on the presidential primary circuit) and bamboozled lots of kids in the process.

His ties with Alex Jones would be disqualifying for most anyone else - until now. With Drudge pushing him into the mainstream, you’re getting Jones exposed to a much wider audience and thereby helping Paul as well. But the more you look at this relationship, the more it should disqualify him from ever approaching the White House. It shows a complete lack of judgment and character (and judging character of others). It shows he’s more than willing to jump headlong in to conspiracy country.

yeah, that’s a good comparison, because christie and rubio are pretty much no-chance players.

Just as in the past, the three legs can veto anyone they really don’t want. (three legs: nativists, dominionists, and corporatists). And the rule still applies that anyone not liked by two legs is an absolute best. It’s a bit wonky as the N and D legs have almost merged, though not quite. Still, it means that as a short-hand you can assume the Tea Party has two votes and the Rockefellers have one. More significant is that they have very long memories. Christie dared to work with Obama, and Rubio dared to push immigration reform. The ND veto for both is inevitable.

Frankly I think you can use that as a first pass test for every candidate. Have they made the TP mad? If so they’re out. If not, maybe.

fwiw, I think Jeb Bush is the most likely nominee if he runs. He’s not made the TP mad and he’s acceptable to the corporatists. That he’s got an extremly small chance of winning the presidency has nothing to do with the nomination.

My Mom died in PA, where I grew up, while I was here in CA. Dad didn’t want to deal with a funeral, since Mom had specified cremation anyway, so I didn’t fly back - also because Dad didn’t want to deal with a lot of people right then.

I felt - odd. I knew she was gone, but I didn’t feel anything like as awful as I thought I would. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it didn’t. I wondered if I was some kind of emotionless monster.

We had a memorial service at the house 5 months later, and I wept like a baby. It wasn’t real till then.

YMMV, of course, but these things hit people differently.

The other thing - you won’t get over it in a hurry. The closer you were the longer it’ll take. You’ll get idiots who don’t get this, so you might want to think now how you’ll deal with them (ignore, rage, ridicule, tears, all the above.) And even when you think you have gotten over it, every so often something will kick it up again.

Going back to the posts last thread about the five year old who killed his little sister -

I’ve shot one of those rifles with my son at a friends house (he’s retired Madison PD). All proper safety gear & everything. So I realized what was bugging me about this incident.

I’ve remembered is that to use this rifle you have to open the bolt, insert the cartridge, close the bolt and the cock the rifle by pulling back a cocking knob. This is under heavy spring tension - I don’t know of any five year old who could do it. My 11 year old had difficulty with it.

What this means is that they left a loaded and cocked rifle sitting in the corner of their house where a five year old could play with it like a toy.

Those parents really should be up on negligent homicide charges.

3 slices (normal for a BLT) will have ~9 g of fat, of which 3 g are saturated. The remainder are monounsaturates. Monounsaturated fats are “good fats”, the same thing you get in olive oil, and encourage things like HDL.

HDL, as you know if you’ve done a little nutritional research, helps reduce the risk of a heart attack.

It’s not an apple, but it’s a long way from “1/100th of a heart attack.”

It sounds like “slurper,” which describes what my proudly ill-mannered cousins do with soup, so maybe they understand it after all. My fattest yokel cousin Dale had a habit of arriving at my parents’ house univited when my stepfather cooked Mexican food. (My stepdad was a famous Tex-Mex chef and author of several cookbooks devoted to that genre.) Dale would inhale as many cheese enchiladas as he could and devour a couple of cow’s worth of carne guisada and a bushel or so of hand-made tortillas, then belch approvingly and be on his way. The folks banned him after a couple of these episodes. Dale is now 52 years old. He weighs, for real, 450 pounds. He is obviously not long for this world without some serious, though unlikely, changes.

I happen to despise the Atkins diet on a variety of nutritional grounds, but he actually got one thing right. If you’re going to cut one of the three calorie sources, cut carbohydrates. In our laziness and blind habit we’ve made fats the villain. Nutritional research is indicating we’re wrong; it’s carbohydrates, and in particular simple carbohydrates, that are giving us the majority of our nutritional problems.

from a farming family standpoint, here’s how meals work:
before dawn: cup of coffee and a biscuit or toast before heading out to deal with livestock.
breakfast: sun is up and you’ve worked a couple hours, this is a good sized meal.
dinner: is around mid-day and is the biggest meal of the day.
supper: usually early evening, leftovers from dinners so it’s not a really big meal.

In general, humor in text is difficult. Sometimes, even if it’s not 100% sarcasm, I use / anyway to indicate that what I am saying is not seriously meant. It at least prevents folks from taking me seriously when I don’t mean to be and allows them to take me seriously when I do mean to be serious.

yeah. Your first post bordered on funny. Your second, especially with your history of sincere near-fanaticism, made it less so. As was already advised, make certain it’s obvious you intend humor. The lizard convention is one or more slashes (/) at the end. My personal habit is to insert (grin) in most places, and sometimes I use it here.

A couple of things going on to know. First, others are also somewhat humor impaired. I’m guilty of it myself. Second, some people will be passionate about a subject you think is funny, and regardless how funny your remark might be will take offense.

I tend to be that way about important things, too. Like bacon. //

My parents seperated in 1966 and we were shuffled off to my grandparents place where we had 3 full Ukrainian/German/Canadian meals a day.

Dad was born and raised in Chelsea and moved to Everett when they got married and he still lives there to this day (at 89)

Yeah, for us supper is what we ate in the evening all together. Dinner was what we called lunch on sunday when we all sat around the table for lunch or other special occaisions like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc.

In the corporate setting (and to a large extent legally) offense is in the ear of the hearer.* The Army regulations quoted earlier today make clear that commanding officers are expected to deal with it fairly and essentially on a case-by-case basis. (And I am pretty sure that if it is a commanding officer causing the issue there are methods to still request something to be done about it via an alternate chain.)

* - Note that the general policy is to try to find reasonable accommodation via communication. It’s obvious that an asshole on either end of the equation can simply decide to make things as difficult as possible. I know people who don’t know when to stop. And I also know people who are simply living to seek offense it seems. And you also don’t want a work place where everyone acts like a robot out of fear of triggering an offense.

Persecution is definitely something often emphasized in Christianity (especially evangelical Christianity) today. Except they miss the part where Jesus just accepted it and moved on.

I don’t do political or religious discussions on Facebook. In general, the ones I disagree with the most tend to be family, and in a lot of cases it’s just easier to not go there.

My dear Lizard, She Who Must Be Obeyed and I have buried all of our parents. It is so hard a process, but thank the gods that Hospice exists. They ease the process and assuage the built-in guilt of the “What if?” that we all naturally feel. My deepest condolences and to you and yours.
