Just talked to my mother. I want my dad to retire. My mother wants my dad to retire. The amount of money my dad could get by cashing out his pension is set to go down next year. I thought this made it more likely that he might retire.
Except they’re both “leery” of Obamacare and what it will mean for the market.
/sigh
I a) asked what difference does that make to the plan you buy and b) encouraged my mother to check out what happened when they implemented this in Massachusetts for an idea of what might happen nationally.
I think that’s about all I can do in a manner where they might actually listen to me but ugh. All this stupid rhetoric that the Republicans are throwing around has very real consequences on the personal decisions people can make.

Iowa Republican Who Could Shake Up U.S. Senate Race Inches Closer To A Run
A handful of Republicans vying to be the next U.S. senator from the state of Iowa will gather on Wednesday night for their first official debate of the campaign. But one potential GOP hopeful who could change the dynamic of the race if he decides to run will be missing.
Iowa conservative leader Bob Vander Plaats, who is actively exploring a bid, has been sending more signals recently that he is getting serious.
Vander Plaats, who heads the Iowa-based group, the Family Leader, traveled to Washington, DC earlier this month during the three-day Values Voter Summit, an annual Christian conservative event, and took part in extensive meetings with national political operatives about his potential Senate bid.
[…]
I wonder if Rove would consider Vander Plaats one of his own, or if Vander Plaats belongs with the others.

“But one long-time Iowa conservative activist told ABC News, “There is no way he could buy enough ad space in Iowa for a million dollars — couldn’t buy that much advertising in a week and a half in Iowa.”
“ABC News has learned that Vander Plaats tried to solicit money for his endorsement during the last presidential cycle too. A former staffer for Mitt Romney’s 2008 presidential bid who is currently unaffiliated with a campaign said Vander Plaats came to them seeking money for his backing if he supported the former Massachusetts governor.

Median household income is $52,100. Then you deduct the filing threshold of $10,000 per individual, so that leaves $42,100. That makes the penalties:
2014: $421.00
2015: $842.00
2016: $1052.00
Pretty much any insurance will be more, but if you make significantly more than median income, yeah, it will be a lot more.

Let me see if I have it right - Fox is telling people that if they don’t sign up, they only have to pay a maximum of $95 each, far below the cost of any plan. They are thus encouraging people NOT to sign up, when in fact the penalties will be substantially MORE if they have any significant income.
It may be that they’re hoping a lot of folks will fail to sign up, causing a groundswell of misdirected anger when they discover that they owe substantially more than $95, and might have been better served by just buying insurance.
I THINK that was HH’s point. Am I right?

The point of the Chief Justice, on why the ACA is indeed constitutional, is that the ACA is just another tax. An elaborate tax, but it is a tax. Thus people who don’t buy insurance will pay the tax to IRS.
This all sort of makes insurance companies tax collectors, which is very much a throw back to the days of when tax collecting was a business, but given this scheme of providing “health care” was hatched by the atavists we ought not be surprised at this.

Online seems to be a 5-step process at optimum. Before the end, you are dealing directly with Blue Cross or whoever you have chosen. (Here we have only BC.)
The expectation for a working system is that the family process should take about an hour, depending on complexity. That’s even with Navigator help.

Florida cop buys shoplifting mom $100 worth of food instead of jailing her
While Miami-Dade Officer Vicki Thomas did arrest Jessica Robles and charge her with a misdemeanor, Thomas also bought Robles $100 worth of food for her children instead of taking her to jail.
“I made the decision to buy her some groceries because arresting her wasn’t going to solve the problem with her children being hungry,” Thomas told WSVN.
According to Robles, she and her boyfriend ran out of money to provide for her three children following the loss of his job and federal food subsidies, which led her to walk into a local store and make off with the groceries.
“She asked, ‘Do you even have food at the house?’” Robles explained to WSVN. “And I looked at her in her face, and I told her, ‘Not at all.’”
Thomas told ABC News she chose to give Robles a notice to appear in court before going back into the store and purchasing the groceries, which gave her family enough food for about a week.
“When I walked out, she saw that I had the cart of groceries and she burst out in tears and asked if she could hug me, which is kind of unusual for the suspect to be hugging the officer,” Thomas told ABC. “I let her hug me.”
Robles has subsequently begun visiting a local food bank and searching for a job, while promising Thomas she would also help someone in her position once she gets her financial affairs in order.

There are quite a few songs I enjoy one version of, but not another.
A note to the music industry. Very few songs (as in none) are improved by having a subliterate buffoon coming in and adding a nonsensical rap verse to an otherwise likeable song.

This is America 2013, Carl Rove’s America, which unfortunately is also our America:
Head to Head: The theory of evolution is not infallible
[…]
But no theory that claims to explain life’s origin can be proven accurate since no human was there to record the events.
[…]
Take the age of the earth, for example. Observational science has proven that sedimentary rock layers can be deposited slowly by rivers. This may support the idea of an extremely old earth.
The same form of science has also proven that rock layers can be formed quickly in natural catastrophes, such as floods or volcanic eruptions. This would support the idea that the earth is young. [um, no, but this is a popular claim among YECs.]
[…]
And:
Evolution is a matter of faith, too
[…]
In fact, it is easier to believe that an outside force produced life than to believe that everything we see in the world today is the consequence of the random action of material elements.
True scientific inquiry does not set about to prove a theory correct by discarding the evidence that does not support the theory. However, observable data (the fossil record, embryology, thermodynamics, genetics, etc.) abounds that contradicts the “theory” of evolution.

That Mogwai line was absolutely brilliant, because it is just so perfectly fitting to the situation.
For more than three decades the Republicans courted the crazies, the racists, and the religious right. All they had to do was to glowingly talk about Jesus and American “freedoms” every now and then, and occasionally introduce a bill that had no chance of passing like abortion bans, deportation bills, balanced budget amendments, etc.
The problem is that after more than a generation of widespread pandering many of the party faithful had grown up taking these empty promises seriously. They simply were not in on the joke that it was all just for show, they had been raised hearing these empty words mouthed as being a central point of the Republican platform. In other words, too many of the new generation of the party’s faithful actually believed their own bullshit.
The Republicans didn’t just grasp the tiger by its tail, they raised it from an orphaned cub with bottle feedings, groomed and cared for it. At least until the day they recently realized it was now simply too big to live in the same room with them any longer.
No sympathy here, they raised it, now they need to find a way to deal with it before it eats them alive.

Probably the freakn’ machines again. Try to find the agency in your state that is running the volunteer Navigator/outreach effort—they should be closest to a specific answer. i can dig through the Alabama SOP, but it only tellls how things should work.
We’re taking outreach to hairdresser shops and little churches in the boonies—most won’t even have connectivity, and for now that might be a blessing.
If it was easy, Teapartiers could do it.
I will do that. Thanks mucho!

Catch is that when the sign up window closes in March, you can’t sign up for the rest of the year. So if you get cancer in April, you are in deep doo doo.
I’m not sure that’s true. If you think about it, you might lose your employer-provided insurance during they year.
One thing I read said the penalty is prorated by the number of months without coverage, so I think it’s just that you have to sign up by March to avoid paying any penalties.

Hatch: Lee Has Time To ‘Show He’s Worthy Of Being Re-Elected’
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) on Tuesday would not endorse Utah’s junior senator and tea party member Mike Lee for re-election, maintaining that Lee needs to prove himself first.
“I think Sen. Lee has plenty of time to reach out to fellow Utahns and to show he’s worthy of being re-elected,” Hatch told the Deseret News. “The best thing to do is do the job, really work hard, (and) stay away from extremes unless you’re absolutely sure you’re right.”
He criticized Lee’s approach to rollback Obamacare by forcing a government shutdown.
“The tactics were not the right tactics. It takes experience sometimes to make sure you can use the right tactics,” Hatch said of Lee’s attempts to attach language defunding Obamacare to a continuing resolution funding the government.
Hatch added that Lee and other Tea Party Republicans need to be “rehabilitated” after the government shutdown.

Ripped from NPR:
“This is one way that the Affordable Care Act is a lot like the insurance plans most people have at work. Every year there’s an open season, and for the most part you can only buy or change plans during that open season. So if next May you haven’t bought insurance and you get sick or you just decide you should have gotten insurance and you didn’t — then too bad. You’ll have to wait until the next open season to sign up.
But there is an exception — and that’s if you have one of several . Moving to another state, getting married or divorced, losing your job-based insurance or having your COBRA coverage end are all things that would allow you to buy insurance on the exchange outside the regular open season. Those events would be handled just as they are in an employment-based health plan.

Former U.S. Rep. Mike Ross wants the people of the Twin Lakes Area to know he’s a pro-gun, pro-God, conservative Democrat.
He also wants them to know he voted against Obamacare as a congressman, but would have signed Arkansas’ “Private Option” version of the Affordable Care Act into law had he been governor in April.
Ross, who seeks the Arkansas Democratic Party’s nomination for governor, was in Mountain Home on Tuesday to attend a fund-raising event at the home of Joe and Kathryn Miles.
“I voted against Obamacare as a congressman. I voted to repeal Obamacare,” Ross said, during an exclusive interview with The Baxter Bulletin. “I agree with Gov. Beebe and the Republican legislature that approved the Private Option, which is a Medicaid expansion for a quarter million people in Arkansas.

My dad went in the hospital a week ago. He was supposed to be out that afternoon, after some minor back surgery. The surgeon were going to remove some bone spurs to relieve pain that for the past two years has kept my dad from his daily walks. But when he got in there, the doc saw that he could use the bones spurs he took off to rebuild a vertebra, and perhaps relieve more pain. So they decided to keep Dad in the hospital for some recovery time from the additional surgery.
That meant withdrawal from alcohol would set in, which everyone involved should have known, because we went through this 5 years ago when he had some major surgery. So then comes the DTs, restraints, stomach tubes, IVs, etc.
Meanwhile, my sister and the doctor she married, who jointly talked everyone into the minor back surgery, are calling the doctors and nurses and my stepmother from 3,000 miles away, trying to find out and have some influence over what’s going on. My stepmother cut them off (she has medical power of atty., in addition to 27 years of marriage) and all the siblings started freaking out. OK, not all. One brother hasn’t said a word through the whole thing.
I’m the only one of my 6 siblings and their 5 spouses that my stepmother will talk to. She has good reasons, and I share some of them, so some of the siblings think I am conspiring with her against them, in contradiction to my father’s best interests.
One spouse asked to be removed from the sibling email list after being attacked by my evil sister. The evil sister won’t talk to me (she did send three nasty emails though) but the other two sisters will talk to me FOR her.
Once they settled in to the realization that they could only get info through me, things calmed down. No more phone calls, far fewer emails. And now that Dad is getting better (he’s still going to be in the hospital at least another week) I think I can go back to being shunned.

Speaking of pure unfiltered crazy, the comments at NRO on the “Art of the Impossible” article (subject of previous thread) have some very entertaining moments.
A sample:
no
you’re probably too young to remember the Reagan years and why there were two Conservative Landslides in Presidential elections (both sides of ruling Class want to obscure this information also, for obvious reasons)
Only The Real Conservative Deal (Reagan) can defeat the Left in America because only such a Leader could UNIFY all Conservative factions … this is the lesson of the 1980s and the Bushies/Howard Dean/Lefties/GOPe AKA The Ruling Class know it very well
the full power of the dominant Conservative Electorate has lain dormant since RWR left the scene …they only activate if The Real Deal appears
they DID activate after Sarah Palin addressed the RNC on sep 3rd 2008 - McCain went from -3 to +3 overnight - NOT because people switched from OBama to McCain, but because a flood of new Conservative voters came off the ‘not registered’ and ‘not likely voters’ benches
it took the puppeteers to collapse the Economy and McCain to suspend his Campaign and return to DC, backing the Bailouts (on the advice of the Ruling Class Tool Steve BULLSCHMIDT) for those new voters to abandon the ticket
Palin and Cruz will activate the maximum power of the Conservative Electorate again
Under the leadership of Palin, Cruz and Demint, the GOP Conservative policy platform will be restored
all the conservative Americans who remain disconnected from the political scene due to disgust, will be motivated to
1. REGISTER and
2. STORM the POLLS
with the Real Deal as Nominee we can expect landslide results as in the 1980s under Reagan, due to Conservatives MAXing at the Polls

I actually find it pretty patronizing. I don’t know if I believe in God or not but I don’t like how “Pro God” has to mean socially conservative. To me when I believed, I saw believing in God as helping the least fortunate among us, not being judgmental of someone for being different and that could be from being of a different religion or having no religion at all to being of a different sexual orientation. The saddest thing is these conservative Democrats are representing views that will hurt their constituents. If they really think that Palin and Cruz are going to get people out to vote for them, they’re really not paying attention. Yeah I am sure conservative turn-out would be higher than ever if they turned out but I’d tell you this much, I’d happily campaign for their opponent and I’ve pretty much vowed to never work on a political campaign again and I think they ignore how much Sarah turned off most of “real America”.

Truth is, my stepmother is a bit whacked herself. If I weren’t related, I would not know anyone remotely like her.
My dad is the closest to normal in the family, I think.
Mr.w is not normal, but I like him that way.
I have a lot of extended family like this.
I think normal is boring, but there’s ways to be off from normal in a good way or in a bad way.
(I will add, I appreciate my parents more now that I don’t live at home. Same with my siblings, although part of that was waiting for them to grow up. Or still waiting. I was one of those kids who was 14 going on 40 on top of the age differences between us.)

I read your article on Ted Cruz. How misinformed can a person be? You have to understand that no matter what, 48% of America is going to agree with Obama and want his policies, because they’re sucking off the entitlement teet, and have no skin in the game, so they don’t count for anything, they’re completely out of the equation. That leaves only 52% of America that actually counts, I guarantee that 80 to 90% of those individuals want to see Obamacare defunded. These facts make your article invalid. Bottom line, think about it, do you really think America has room to add another 20% to the budget for healthcare subsidies? What planet are you on? I guess you’re on the same planet as the 48% who doesn’t care about fiscal responsibility let alone the welfare of the rest of the nation

Here’s something you don’t see every day. A raving loon with an excellent command of the language. From NRO comments:
Authentic conservatism enjoys not only a profound consistency in each of its constituent parts (providing for, when full-orbed, an ability to address a myriad of issues in a holistic, intellectually cogent, coherent and nuanced manner … complete with consistently predictable outcomes) but it also contributes to an ethos grounded in transcendent values.
The intellectual integrity and vigor of authentic conservatism quite
naturally motivates those who have drunk deeply from its well …
demanding urgency and action when under threat … and vigilance when restored. While Establishment Republicans are somewhat versed (though genuine conservatives recognize pretenders pretty easily) in conservative concepts and language they lack not merely conviction (and the courage which knowledge can yield) but, like a lexicon, they may offer the textbook definition of conservative ideas … yet have assimilated that knowledge in no meaningful fashion.
Instead, they offer a stream of words disconnected from any meaningful comprehension or conviction. Just a series of conservative noises offered just in time for each election cycle.
Conservatives have not become more partisan … as some would
suggest, dismissive of the angst and action of Conservatives of late. It’s simply that the arc … the historical trajectory of progressivism/modern liberalism/marxism leads, inexorably, to tyranny (the abatement of liberty).Having now reached that moment when its tendencies toward despotism are now undeniable, the Left is laboring in a feverish, grasping urgency to finalize its agenda. Only conservatives stand in their way.
Conversely, Republicans can only offer politcal strategies (failed)
divorced from any meaningful narrative or philosophy. They betray a
frightening tendency toward both self-deception and hypocrisy coupled
with an increasingly visceral hatred of any voice to their right. At best they are reactionaries so captured by the moment, so void of
any meaningful or persuasive governing vision, so possessed of
shortsighted and selfish politcal ambitions that they remain forever
unable to see the forest for the trees. At worst, they are just another member-in-good-standing in today’s
cynical, duplicitous, self absorbed, permanent political class. The disdain Establish Republicans reveal for conservatives who have
the temerity to stand and offer a full throated defense of a full-orbed
conservative ideology and their willingness to assign the label
“conservative” to those who’ve offered only the feeblest defense of
conservative values … ready to jettison them the very moment any hint
of disapproval is registered among liberal elites, suggests to me that
there’s more dishonesty afoot than any of us might wish to acknowledge.

It’s not articulate at all, just a bunch of word salad.

I’ll bet if he went to a Tea Party convention and started talking like that, they’d string him up.

It’s an unusual flavor of word salad, with $10 words used correctly, mostly in proper sentences.
It also probably makes sense, from a conservative point of view. Authentic frontier gibberish (e.g., from Palin) usually doesn’t make sense from any point of view.

But all that halo polishing of conservatives was essential.///

The curse of the thinking conservative. I bet WF Buckley had the same problem from time to time.

“people like me are the really smart ones”
but i’m marking him down for “full-orbed”…

‘full-orbed’ is very strange terminology. I’m imagining this comment is a cut and paste from the author’s personal blog, which is steadily drifting to TimeCube levels of obsessive nonsense in an attempt to prove that wingnut conservatism is “The One True Way”.

The problem with conservatives and conservatism is they think their ideology is the only rooted in liberal democratic tradition. Progressivism/modern liberalism have to be linked with Marxism. Liberals have to be seen as tyrants. The other problem conservatism has that it has increasingly become more and more an ideology that excludes rather than includes. Read, how gay groups who try to participate in things like CPAC are treated or how the conservative movement views anyone who doesn’t fit “judeo-christian.”

The MW online dictionary gives an interesting usage example for full-orbed:
“Orthodox Christianity has always held to the full-orbed trinitarian faith, and the Athanasian Creed is the classic expression of this doctrine.” Rushdoony.
Rushdoony is a famous nutball Christian dominionist. en.wikipedia.org
