I think I’ve just witnessed a couple of the oddest things on TV that I have seen in quite a while.
Here I am at work, I go out to smoke a cigarette about twenty minutes ago; someone had the TV in our break room (which I have to go through to our smoking area). As I walk in, I hear Chubby Checker singing “The Twist”, look at the TV, and notice that Mr. Checker was indeed singing his hit…on Fox News…on Mike Huckabee’s show with a live band backing him and Huck and his studio audience getting into it. Nothing against Mr. Checker, because I love that song and he’s one of the icons of early rock-and-roll, but it just seems like an odd venue; to each their own, I suppose.
So, I then flip the channel to TruTV to see what’s on, so I can watch it through the outside glass door while I smoke; Hardcore Pawn is on, but before I can come back inside to flip it from that, during a commercial break, a commercial from FarmersOnly.com comes on to pimp their dating service for “farmers”, “ranchers”, and “country folk”, that “city folks just don’t get”, as they show video of some men and women doing chores out on the farm.
Again, to each their own, I suppose, but the producers of that commercial apparently love their Comic Sans, because they made use of it. That’s one of the few fonts that makes me want to retch, because it’s so overused.

I find his voice too high-pitched to even think of a comparison to Tom Waits. But he is a fine guitarist, and lyricist as well (I’m assuming he writes his own).
(hearing that gravel in his voice, I wonder if it’s not a sore throat or something).
For instance, compare this video of Love is All:

The copper will be even neater when the verdigris starts to build.
That is from an accident. Instead of a steady slow pour into a spinning crucible that acts like a sprinkler with the molten metal, the pour rate exceeded the waters ability to chill it into spheres and freeze it. The spheres of copper were still molten enough to melt together, underwater on the side of a stainless steel funnel that is about 4 feet wide. Blew up the bottom of the barrel with a steam explosion too.
Heh, got steam punked!

It’s sad to see Afghanistan going down like this….
Afghan civilian casualties rise as NATO pulls out
Here’s a tidbit for Alan Grayson, Code Pink and the rest of the anti-drone crowd….
The report attributed 74 per cent of total civilian deaths and injuries in 2013 to anti-Government elements, 11 per cent to pro-Government forces (eight per cent to ANSF and three per cent to international forces) and 10 per cent to ground engagements between anti-Government elements and pro-Government forces. Five per cent of civilian casualties were unattributed, resulting mostly from explosive remnants of war.
“At the start of 2014, it is imperative that all parties, but particularly anti-Government elements, halt the worsening impact of the conflict on Afghan civilians,” Kubis stressed. Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used by anti-Government elements caused 34 per cent of all civilian casualties, according to the report, while ground engagements between parties to conflict caused 27 per cent and suicide and complex attacks by anti-Government elements caused 15 per cent.

Valentino Promotes Amy Adams’ Handbag She Wore to Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Funeral
As if a funeral could get any sadder. Valentino is receiving a huge backlash after promoting one of their handbags on Friday, Feb. 7. Why the outcry? The fashion house specifically sent out a press release about the bag Oscar-nominated actress Amy Adams wore — to Philip Seymour Hoffman’s funeral.
“We are pleased to announce Amy Adams carrying the Valentino Garavani Rockstud Duble bag from the Spring/Summer 2014 collection on Feb. 6 in New York,” the shameless press release read.
With the statement, a photo of a grieving Adams was attached, which showed her heading into the funeral in NYC with the $2,500 bag in hand.

Damn piece reads like it was from Info Wars:
Snowden has made it clear that if he is arrested, if he vanishes, or if he “dies” from any cause whatsoever, ALL of the information in his possession will be published publicly.
TRN has confirmed that, working through Julian Assange and his “WikiLeaks” organization, copies of the encrypted data have already been distributed to more than one-thousand, two hundred (1200) web sites around the world. Those sites have agreed to conceal the information until such time as contact with Snowden is “lost.” Once contact is lost, the sites have been told they will receive the Decryption keys via CD ROM, E-mail and P2P / Bit-Torrent file transfer. Once the decryption keys are sent, the sites have been instructed to wait a specific amount of time to confirm Snowden’s disappearance, arrest or death and upon expiration of that time period, to publish the decrypted materials.
Making the situation all the more dire for the government is that Snowden has made clear he will release some of the information under certain “other” circumstances. For instance, if Martial Law is declared in the US or if any elections are canceled for any reason, all the government employee info goes out. If an economic collapse takes place, all the Banker/Stock Broker/Commodities Trader information goes out. If Corporations start hyper-inflating prices, all the information about them, their officers and Board of Directors will go out.
Snowden literally has the most powerful people in the United States in an inescapable stranglehold. If any of the things articulated above take place, everyone throughout the country will know exactly who to blame and exactly where they live. One can only speculate that under the right conditions, it might not be long until those responsible for the problems of our country, faced consequences for their actions; consequences delivered one at a time, in the dark of night, when there is no help … . and no escape.

I assume Wikileaks publicity stunt. Greenwald and Wikileaks look like they’ve been parceling out whatever they can find for maximum publicity and if there was something really REALLY juicy in there they’d publish it first, not hold off until the Black Helicopters finally came for St Snowden.
I’m also pretty sure that China and Russia have had free access to all this material for months. Even if China and Russia couldn’t break the encryption Snowden said he had on those disks (which I doubt for several reasons), Snowden was in a pretty horrible bargaining position in Hong Kong and had precisely one thing to trade for sanctuary. Any other powers could probably trade for Snowden data from China or Russia, because this sort of shit happens all the time.
Also, it’s fairly clear that Wikileaks and Greenwald consider the US the only power in the world who would possibly assassinate someone for political gain. Obviously, this kind of dead-man’s switch is a total win/win for a rival power; that Wikileaks doesn’t address this (that I see) means that there’s only the US, its dupes, and its victims in the world. Nice.

It’s standard “Blame America First!” rhetorical tactics, heightened by the fact that Wikileaks is an effective mouthpiece for Russian intelligence. To be clear, it didn’t start out that way, but Russia has regained the capability to subvert foreign organizations developed by the KGB.

What? You mean that Snowden wont release all the records if the country he’s staying in engages in violent crackdowns against those expressing themselves peacefully in opposition of government policy? Those who speak out against homophobia and the government’s anti-gay policies?
Or if Snowden’s host country has an economic collapse or there’s a major terror incident. Or the former leader decides to come back and take the reins of power in order to fulfill their oligarchic dreams.
Wait. It’s Russia, so that’s completely irrelevant. But a perception that the US might spy on a US citizen somewhere at some time, even if it’s under a government warrant? That’ll spur outrageous outrage and the drip of articles.

It’s a nonsensical update of Ronald Reagan’s classic “ordinary taxpayer goes to the grocery to buy a pound of hamburger meat and while there sees a ‘strapping young buck’ buying steak with food stamps’.”
The implication is that the person “working 70 hours a week” is oppressed by government demands for his money and the person getting government assistance is mooching. Unlike the Reagan version, however, there is no racial subtext to the”Some-ecard”.

But can it not also mean that the poor individual with a family that has to work two or more part-time positions also pays taxes into it all still can’t afford to buy what you can?
Using Dark’s Reagan example…the underpaid 70 hour worker is still not buying the ground chuck…they are getting the last day it is able to be sold hamburger and mixing that with breadcrumbs to extend it.
Many times I see things this way too. It is almost like creating a culture war amongst all the people hurting. And I think Fox and others have been very adept at doing just that. Divide and conquer. Gut the middle class and get them fighting for scraps with the lower classes. Meanwhile “YOU” gets to gather up all the bucks laughing as they deposit the check at the bank on their way out for a nice steak dinner and drinks.

Do you really think the sender of that doesn’t believe moocher = black? They may be smart enough not to say it out loud, but I’d be willing to bet they believe it.
The person who sent it might well believe that, as might the person who created the ecard, but the ecard itself does not contain racial subtext. You have your suspicions and they are well-founded, but those suspicions cannot be proven from the ecard. Given that, I did not want to make a claim which I could not support from the facts in evidence.

And the guy is still likely to go to prison. The grand jury didn’t indict on murder, but they did indict him for possessing marijuana while also possessing a deadly weapon. Under Texas law that is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

LOL! That’s a piece of bullshit worthy of Bryan Fischer. Fortunately (and unfortunately), the Iranian Navy and Air Force don’t actually believe it. They’re working on ways to take out a US carrier, make no mistake, but they know that doing so will be very difficult and the American reply would be devastating.

By Ben Shapiro
National Review continues it’s spin cycle down the toilet bowl.
Libertarianism becomes libertinism without a cultural force pushing back against the penchant for sin; Hollywood has no such cultural force. In fact, the Hollywood demand is for more self-abasement, less spirituality, less principle, less standards.

This reasoning makes no sense at all. The minimum wage now is so low that there is little incentive for a person on welfare to work minimum wage, because as soon as they start working they risk losing AFDC and WIC benefits, and if a mother, shelling out money for daycare. If the minimum wage were higher, it would help get people off welfare. Yet, raising the minimum seems to be a non-starter issue in Congress now.

What the difference between a Liberal and a Conservative?
A Liberal, on hearing that (whether or not it is even true) welfare pays more than a minimum wage job, thinks: “Raise the Minimum Wage!”
A Conservative, hearing the same thing, thinks “Eliminate teh welfares, & lower teh minimum wage!!!!1!!!!”

Sadly, that’s close to the truth.
I confess I don’t know the answer, but I suspect that working the typical 30-35 hr work week at minimum wage (since full-time jobs are scarce nowadays) pays only a little bit more than welfare benefits.

The problem is the press reports are often overly optimistic about “ground breaking” agreements and “unprecedented cooperation”. Iran, UN nuclear agency agree new steps but suspect site off-limits
Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog agreed Sunday on new “practical” steps to increase transparency over Tehran’s controversial nuclear work, although a suspect military site remained off-limits.
Iranian officials said the International Atomic Energy Agency was not being granted access to the Parchin military site, where Tehran is suspected of having experimented with nuclear arms development.
Talks in Tehran between Iran and the IAEA on Saturday and Sunday also did not cover allegations that prior to 2003, and possibly since, Iran’s nuclear work had “possible military dimensions”, state media said.

Electronics seized from Georgia Tech student burned in apartment
Channel 2 Action News now knows police confiscated several electronics from the apartment of the Georgia Tech grad student who set himself on fire.
Saamer Akhshabi is at Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta. Investigators said he suffered third-degree burns on 90 percent of his body.
Early on, Channel 2 learned police found a Molotov cocktail and plastic bottles containing flammable liquids.
Police released the 911 call and a number of new details in an incident report on Thursday.
Channel 2’s Erica Byfield reported when firefighters pulled up to Akhshabi’s apartment on 10th Street in Midtown Atlanta, he was still on fire.
The report also reveals investigators also took three laptops, three cellphones, two jump drives and homemade movies from Akhshabi’s apartment.
Lastly, the report listed a witness - Byfield found out the witness is also a Tech grad student.
One of Akhshabi’s neighbors called 911.
The FBI is heading up the investigation.

The reason we don’t hear about them is because they are usually out of the public spotlight, unlike the performers we see daily on the Internet.

But I don’t see that as the most salient point in the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Rather, Hoffman was in a good bit of psychological distress and did not deal with it properly. His use of heroin was a failure in his duty to his children, but it was less a fundamental moral failing and more that he was trying to self-medicate.

So who sets the “proper moral code” of which you speak?
The reason I didn’t do most of the drugs and alcohol out there others were doing is not because religion told me it was wrong, but because I didn’t wish to do myself harm, but that wasn’t it entirely. I also didn’t want to do my children harm, either, lose a job, wreck my precarious financial position, etc..

I guess I can see the argument for the practice, it does make for a more concise headline. Instead of New Study Shows Vitamin C Reduces Cancer Risk the BBC would say Vitamin C “Reduces Cancer”. I would still prefer the longer headline because it’s more informative because it tells who is making the claim. then I can judge if the article is worth reading. Otherwise I have no idea if it’s a peer reviewed study or a holistic guru/interior designer making vitamin claims using a Ouija board.

Exactly, addiction is something that effects rich, poor, man, woman, black, white, liberal, conservative, etc. To try to blame “Hollywood” and “Liberalism” for addiction is just a pathetic attempt by Shapiro to use the tragedy of Hoffman’s death to smear the left and Hollywood. It’s really sad that the guy’s whole take on anything is to blame the left which is funny since IIRC he comes from a liberal family.

Good point. I’m sure the Koch brothers are to blame for the freezing rain.

re: #143 Killgore Trout
When I went to bed last night the freezing rain was still falling and all the trees were creaking and groaning under the weight. I thought for sure I’d wake up to no power. I have electricity but others aren’t so lucky.
Power outages continue in Portland area with Clackamas County hit hardest
Looking pretty bad; TriMet even had the shut down the MAX system. That’s a first, I think.

It’s pretty bad but I’ve seen worse. 6 or 7 years ago we had an ice storm that kept everything frozen solid for over a week. this should clear up in a couple days.

I’m going to guess because he referred to Temptation as a “siren.”

Liberalism killed Philip Seymour Hoffman
By Ben Shapiro
National Review continues it’s spin cycle down the toilet bowl.
God, Shapiro is an ignorant little shit. Hoffman died because he was an addict and despite all his best efforts and his 20+ years of sobriety, his demons still won. It’s as simple as that.
His death has nothing to do with liberalism, conservatism, or anything in between. WTF. Are the comments at least pointing this out or is NR its usual cesspool of idiocy and fail?
