Wha…
Religious Right radio host says Abraham Lincoln used Civil War to destroy freedom, impose communism http://t.co/6fBJyTIzBf— Right Wing Watch (@RightWingWatch) August 8, 2014
Last month, Religious Right broadcaster Kevin Swanson hosted a neo-Confederate author to discuss how Abraham Lincoln used the Civil War — or as he called it, “The War Against The South” — to impose socialism on America.
Swanson is adding Lincoln to the list of people, such as Mark Twain, who he believes ruined the country by replacing Antebellum slavery with Big Government, socialist slavery.
“It’s the socialist utopians that come into town and they promise deliverance from local fiefdoms only to create a large tyranny in the Soviet Union, Soviet America and Soviet China and Soviet everywhere else in the world,” he said.

Standard talking point on the far right. It’s not new. There are plenty of assholes on the libertarian and anarcho-capitalist far right who will tell you the same thing. They will call Lincoln a tyrant that was WORSE THAN HITLER ZOMG who “invaded” and forced the peaceful Confederacy to end slavery before they were ready to vote on it.
If only he had let the states decide for themselves, we wouldn’t be living in a horrible socialist shithole where the states are forced to comply with Teh Ebil Gubmint. Or something.

People have a weird idea of threats and statistics.
You’re much more likely to be killed by a car accident or lightning than Ebola in the US, but Ebola gets hyped to no end (and idiots like Trump say inane and idiotic things - but I’m repeating myself).
Ebola has killed under 1,000 people during the current epidemic. It kills nearly 70% of those infected with the virus.
Those numbers are scary - if you have Ebola or are exposed to someone who has it.
Much more scary? Malaria. 2.3 billion people are potentially exposed every year. ~200 million get the disease. And ~600,000+ die every year from malaria.
600,000+ people die of malaria every year. That’s 600 times the number of those killed in the Ebola epidemic.

Look, if you want to play fictional scenarios for the USAMRIID and concoct ways that terrorists or enemy states could weaponize Ebola or spread the disease among the general population, that’s one thing. Figuring out how to stop the disease is also important. But his statements aren’t in that context. It’s about to gin up fear and question the precautions currently in place at Emory.
Note too that in the 40 years since Ebola was first identified, there’s no indication that anyone has tried using it as a weapon because it is so deadly - health experts who DONT want to get the disease have died despite their best efforts to not become infected. And we know how to stop Ebola outbreaks. It’s called isolating infected patients, using biosafety precautions, isolating those who might have been infected to keep them from spreading the disease, and prohibiting contact with the deceased victims who could potentially infect those who come in contact with the remains. Common sense precautions that could limit the spread of the disease. Carson isn’t about using common sense.

David Lane: Liberal ‘Blitzkrieg’ Imposed ‘False God Of Secularism’ On America
Likely Republican presidential candidates like Ted Cruz, Bobby Jindal, Mike Huckabee and Rand Paul are working to court Religious Right activist and American Renewal Project founder David Lane, who today wrote a column for BarbWire warning that “America has been hijacked, we are now living between Babel and the Beast.”
Lane writes that America’s troubles all go back to the “coordinated, deliberate, sustained effort, a blitzkrieg [of] imposing an intolerant and aggressive false religion on America — Secularism.”

re: #78 Charles Johnson
At some level he probably rationalizes this as being a realist position. That there’s no US interest in intervening to save the lives of the Yezidi or stopping the ISIS advance even though the group has already shown its willingness to engage in ethnic cleansing and indicates genocidal intent against anyone who doesn’t adhere to their view of Islam.
The problem is that his worldview doesn’t include reality. There are legitimate reasons for the US and the rest of the world to intervene against ISIS and put them down as a bunch of rabid dogs. Their acts in furtherance of committing genocide being chief among them. Realism is about power politics, and it is in the US interest to protect the Yezidi and Kurds and these oppressed groups. The President is doing just enough to provide assistance without entangling us once again in the ground fight or nation building. We’re giving these groups a chance to hold their own, and maybe even give the Maliki government a chance to get in the game and get their own house in order to take the fight to ISIS and push them out altogether.
US presidents come in with rhetoric that harken to every other kind of political theory out there about international affairs, but once in office, it almost always comes back to realism/neo-realism - power politics, balance of powers, and identifying foreign interests that align with US interests and doing what is necessary to maintain and strengthen those ties. Obama is doing what his predecessors have done - and taking acts where necessary.
Greenwald seems offended by this - that the US acts in furthering its own interests.

If your website isn't using HTTPS by default in 2014, you don't care about your users, period.— Christopher Soghoian (@csoghoian) August 8, 2014
Only someone who lives in a reality-excluding bubble would make a stupid absolutist comment like this.
If a website relies on content supplied by other places, like ads, embedded videos, statistics, etc., it’s simply not possible yet to “use HTTPS by default” because many of the suppliers of this external content are not using HTTPS.
At LGF, we use HTTPS for sign-ins, user settings management, and other places where it’s feasible, but this kind of statement from someone who should know better is just bullshit.

Buncha librul Democrat plants, polling edition:
Polls Show GOP Base Has Impeachment Fever, Even As Party Leaders Run From It
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said late last month that Republicans “have no future plans” to impeach President Obama, scoffing at what he described as a “scam started by Democrats at the White House” to gin up the base and raise money.
But the idea — however quixotic — clearly annoys Boehner more than the voters he hopes will turn out en masse in November.
Polls conducted last month by CNN/ORC, Fox News and Rasmussen Reports all found close to 60 percent of Republicans in favor of impeaching and removing Obama from office.
Each poll found that wide majorities of the public at large — and virtually every other demographic group — oppose impeachment.

And what was it you were saying yesterday about AdSense not letting you implement HTTPS in all instances? So, it’s your fault that some major corporation (which operates major ad platform and blogging platform to boot) hasn’t integrated HTTPS protocols for AdSense so you can have higher security than they now provide.
If this guy wants to complain, send him to Google Adsense.

Bryan Fischer Agrees With ISIS That Yazidis Are Devil Worshipers And That’s Why Obama Defends Them
American Family Association spokesman Bryan Fischer is outraged that the U.S. is intervening in Iraq to stop ISIS, who has been attacking Christians and other Muslims throughout the country.
Fischer believes that President Obama only intervened to stop the extermination of the Yazidis, who practice an ancient religion yet are considered by ISIS fighters and others to be “devil worshipers.” He began today’s edition of “Focal Point” by railing against Obama, saying the president only decided to launch airstrikes in Iraq in order to defend “devil worshipers.”
“They go after devil worshipers and all of the sudden the entire weight of the United States government is sent in there to relieve them and to avenge them,” he said. “Those are the Yazidis.”

The way Adsense works, though, is that the ad content is actually supplied by the advertisers; Adsense is sort of a middle man in the process. So if the advertiser doesn’t use HTTPS to supply the content, that’s it, you’re out of luck.
And there are actually very compelling reasons why advertisers resist using HTTPS — because secure, encrypted connections make their tracking and metrics systems fail. Some of the information they rely on for these abilities simply isn’t present in a secure connection. And advertisers REALLY like having those abilities.
I don’t see this situation changing any time soon, for that reason.

* - The gnats are courtesy of using potting soil with high amounts of organic matter. If it has surface exposure then there is sufficient fungus growth to support a *lot* of tiny gnats. It’s a technique often advocated by workplace security experts:
Businesses…be mindful of WHEN you fire someone
2. Firing someone on any other day than end of the week, puts the individual in a position where he doesn’t have anywhere to go the next morning. The departure form normality starts right away tomorrow. If instead, you terminate on a Friday afternoon, the person will have the entire weekend to come to terms with what has happened. No work tomorrow, when tomorrow is a typical weekend day doesn’t seem as jarring as it might earlier in the week.

Sure, I get that. And on an objective level it makes sense, since this place pretty much clears out at 5pm daily and no one will be here over the weekend.
Still, I’m looking at the other side of that. They just laid off several IT guys on a Friday and this is a place where everyone is online and everyone is on the phone all day. Issues are inevitable. If they don’t have people ready to replace the layoffs, whoever is left in IT will be overwhelmed with issues and it will cause problems.

There’s a reason doctors are popular targets of scam artists peddling get rich quick schemes or illegal tax evasion scams. A certain native intelligence combined with an ego enhanced by the deference accorded them in their work environment leads many to believe they know a lot more than they do. And they have cash to spend. I know a bunch locally who lost their shirts years ago in the Great Arabian Horse scam wherein they were convinced that the rise in value of these wonderful beasts was the path to quick riches. And so they invested and watched the value of the animals rise to quite impressive heights. I was invited to join but declined. I had a question. Who races Arabian horses and where? The answer is pretty much nowhere outside of Arabia. And like the the tulip bubble of the Netherlands the whole thing collapsed and most of the poor horses wound up in Florida headed for the glue factory. Very sad.

Some cats just do that. Trixie is nearly 7 and is still pretty tiny.
(I think she just enjoys being the baby, so she acts smaller.)
Yeah, she’s almost a year old and is still pretty small. I got her at the start of the year. She’s grown some, but she has just stayed smaller. It makes bathing her easy, that’s for sure. Haha.
The older boy kitteh clearly has some Maine Coon in him, but he’s a mutt. He’s huge for a regular cat, but for a Maine Coon he’d be on the smaller end.

— NBCWashington (@nbcwashington) August 8, 2014
The medical examiner said Brady died as a result of the grevious injuries he suffered 33 years ago, which means that gunman John Hinckley Jr. could be charged with Brady’s murder in federal court.
The medical examiner’s ruling has the potential to open the door to federal murder charges against Hinckley, who is now a mental patient at St. Elizabeth’s hospital in suburban Washington.

U.S. Warplanes Strike Militants in Iraq
DOHUK, Iraq — The United States on Friday afternoon launched a second round of airstrikes on Sunni militants in northern Iraq, sending four Navy fighter jets to strike eight targets around Erbil, according to Pentagon officials.
The attacks came hours after an initial wave of strikes by military aircraft and armed drones, escalating the American involvement in Iraq a day after President Obama announced that the United States military was returning to a direct combat role in the country it left in 2011.
Military officials said they believed that the second round of attacks resulted in a number of casualties among the militants with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. The Navy fighters launched from the aircraft carrier George H. W. Bush, which has been deployed in the Arabian Sea.

The medical examiner can rule whatever he wants to, but until Congress explicitly nullifies the year and a day rule established in Jewell v. Territory there probably can’t be a federal prosecution.
¶9 Murder, at common law, was committed when a person of sound mind and discretion unlawfully killed any reasonable creature in being in the peace of the sovereign with malice aforethought, either express or implied. According to this rule if one feloniously and with malice aforethought wounded another, from which wound death ensued within a year and a day, it was murder, unless excuse or justification was shown. Under our statute such act would not constitute an element of murder unless perpetrated with a premeditated design to effect the death of the person killed or of some other person, but would be embraced within some one of the lower degrees of homicide.
The Supremes did however rule in the 2001 Rogers v Tennessee case that a state could repeal the year and a day rule and apply that change retroactively.

I am not particularly opposed to the new strikes in Iraq, but it does give me a sinking, resigned feeling. Is there no end to this?
It also seems very dangerous in many ways. Without good command and control on the ground, it could go wrong in a big way, especially since the militants can be counted on to set up a disaster if possible. With our own people on the ground, a whole new set of hazards and risks would appear. Iran has competent controllers, it is conceivable there could be some very low key cooperation.

If the death is directly attributable to the injuries (or direct consequences from the injuries), then that’s the right call.
Same kind of thing happens with worker’s compensation claims, etc., because it’s a matter of tracing back for liability.

If the underlying cause of death can be directly traced back to a trauma, the ME has to try to classify it.
It should be noted by all medical-legal officers that if trauma is either the underlying cause of death or a contributing cause of death, the manner of the onset of the trauma must be indicated; that is, the trauma must have been initiated by an accident, a suicidal venture, or a homicidal event.

Speaking of racism, today a group of notable scientists published a letter, refuting Nicholas Wade’s claim in his latest (and loved by the hate-right) book A Troublesome Inheritance.
Geneticists say popular book misrepresents research on human evolution
Here’ the letter:
LETTERS: ‘A TROUBLESOME INHERITANCE’
Published in The New York Times Book Review August 8, 2014
To the Editor:
As scientists dedicated to studying genetic variation, we thank David Dobbs for his review of Nicholas Wade’s “A Troublesome Inheritance: Genes, Race and Human History” (July 13), and for his description of Wade’s misappropriation of research from our field to support arguments about differences among human societies.
As discussed by Dobbs and many others, Wade juxtaposes an incomplete and inaccurate account of our research on human genetic differences with speculation that recent natural selection has led to worldwide differences in I.Q. test results, political institutions and economic development. We reject Wade’s implication that our findings substantiate his guesswork. They do not.
We are in full agreement that there is no support from the field of population genetics for Wade’s conjectures.
Nicholas Wade has gotten lots of love around the hate-right. For example, here is Michael Barone in National Review:
BTW, lots of Wade-love in the past at NRO.
The hate-right is also the ignorant-right, but that won’t stop them from filling millions of pages with spew.
I’m glad the population geneticists are officially fighting back.

I know the cause of death for my grandfather ended up being attributed to a service related injury 30+ years after the fact, which had implications for things like benefits for my grandmother. However, I don’t anticipate any charges for the reasons goddamnedfrank outlined above.

The question is not of the concept of “race”, which is troublesome enough, but that “Wade juxtaposes an incomplete and inaccurate account of our research on human genetic differences with speculation that recent natural selection has led to worldwide differences in I.Q. test results, political institutions and economic development. “
Nicholas Wade has been popular among the American professional pundit hate-right for a while,

Doesn’t matter. The people who made the firing decisions will blame the people they fired for the problems.
In modern management credit is always taken and blame is always avoided.

re: #230 goddamnedfrank
A racist might well not mention their thoughts on white pride during the courting phase however. Everyone who’s gone through a divorce knows that certain fucked up traits in one’s spouse aren’t always readily apparent until it’s too late.
My brother and I were talking about having grown up in what we agreed was one of the primo places to learn prejudice - rural Pennsylvania. About the only exposure we had to nonwhites was migrant farmworkers, who came up from the South in Spring and left again around Thanksgiving.
Mom and Dad never spoke in bigoted terms, so we didn’t either, and we all deplored the bigotry of our friends and classmates. But both of us had the experience of feeling emotional reactions we could only call racism, which we had to consciously fight against, and still have to fight against.
So, in a way, it’s not surprising that some folks seem to become racists who hadn’t been before. The feelings, the reactions are there in many of us. It’s what you do when they arise that marks the difference.

The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory would like you to note that the park is not exploding.
3) The park has not been evacuated. This one is pretty easy to verify by everyone. If the Old Faithful webcam shows people, or if news articles are coming out about a hobbyist’s remote control helicopter crashing into a hot spring, Yellowstone is certainly open for business.
4) No volcanologists have stated that Yellowstone is likely to erupt this week, this month or this year. In one recent article, a name was attributed to a “senior volcanologist”, but that person does not appear to exist, and a geologist with that name assures us that he did not supply any quotes regarding Yellowstone.

‘SNL’s Victoria Jackson falls to incumbents
Victoria Jackson, the former “Saturday Night Live” cast member who has made a name for herself as an active tea party participant, conservative activist and outspoken opponent of President Barack Obama, has lost her bid to win a spot on the Williamson County Commission.
Jackson received 632 votes, losing out to Judy Lynch Herbert, with 1,422 votes, and Betsy Hester, with 1,380 votes. There were also nine write-in votes. The County Commission has 12 districts with two commissioners in each district.
Maybe there’s reason to hope Tennessee may pull itself out of its death spiral of stupid.

Of course! Child labor allows employers to pay even less, and puts downward pressure on wages for adults. Remember, many of these folks are the same ones who ridicule fast food workers striking for higher wages.
Anyone who earns less than they do deserves to be treated like shit, and to earn even less, and should be fired for asking for more.
Anyone who earns more than they do is overpaid, unless earning VASTLY more, in which case they deserve it.

So a long time friend of mine posted an article about how Facebook, by forcing you to use their Messenger app, will be able to do things like (I shit you not) turn off your cellular service.
He basically went into an outrage, warning people of how dangerous Facebook is becoming. Yes, he did this by posting on Facebook.
He’s generally a smart guy, but Jesus, he’s running around telling people that a chat app will allow Facebook utter control of your phone.
And I’m sure whenever I see him next, I’ll be called a ‘Debbie Downer’ for pointing out how silly people are acting over this.
(For the record, I was called that by someone else for busting a FB myth. Literally, the guy was insisting I was making an online conversation unpleasant by pointing out he was spreading a false rumor.)
I’m seriously thinking about leaving FB at this point, or staying off it for a while.

Thank you. We’ve had some intermittent trouble, but fortunately we aren’t quite at the total fail point. Returning from a camping trip and doing 3 or 4 loads of wash in rapid succession gave us a warning and enough time to get the ball rolling since the worst blocked spot is extremely difficult to clear. We just can’t dump lots of water down at any one time right now and by mid-week everything should be shiny and new.

Old Orangeberg pipe? It lasts about fifty years before the roots infiltrate, at least here in Austin. My house was built in 1950, and we upgraded to PVC in 2001, by necessity. Not a lot of fun when you flush the toilet and it just stares at you. Ick.

Nope, a 50 year old partly clay, partly cast iron pipe. There is a steep hill involved, so things have shifted over the years, and the neighbor’s tree has found a great source of water to tap into. Unfortunately, this has to be replaced all the way out to the main sewer line in the middle of the street, and the local sanitary district no longer considers itself responsible for anything except the main line, so it’s all ours. The plumber can’t do trenchless because of the location of a water main, so we’re talking about trenching halfway across the street and repaving. It will cost many times as much as yours.

Yikes! Bell and butt clay pipe is one of the banes of my existing, being an emergency response guy. You would be surprised, or perhaps not, how many municipalities still have it as a mainstay of their sanitary sewer systems. When water levels rise due to rains, and that water level gets to where the utility trays are, anything floating on the water, like historic gasoline releases, has direct access to the line and, downstream, the sewage treatment plant.
In 2000, a gasoline release killed the treatment plant in Henrietta, TX. Cost to the State? Over $500,000. Cost recovery so far from the Station owner/ Insurer? Zippo.
