You’re much more likely to be killed by a car accident or lightning than Ebola in the US, but Ebola gets hyped to no end (and idiots like Trump say inane and idiotic things - but I’m repeating myself).

Ebola has killed under 1,000 people during the current epidemic. It kills nearly 70% of those infected with the virus.

Those numbers are scary - if you have Ebola or are exposed to someone who has it.

Much more scary? Malaria. 2.3 billion people are potentially exposed every year. ~200 million get the disease. And ~600,000+ die every year from malaria.

600,000+ people die of malaria every year. That’s 600 times the number of those killed in the Ebola epidemic.

Look, if you want to play fictional scenarios for the USAMRIID and concoct ways that terrorists or enemy states could weaponize Ebola or spread the disease among the general population, that’s one thing. Figuring out how to stop the disease is also important. But his statements aren’t in that context. It’s about to gin up fear and question the precautions currently in place at Emory.

Note too that in the 40 years since Ebola was first identified, there’s no indication that anyone has tried using it as a weapon because it is so deadly - health experts who DONT want to get the disease have died despite their best efforts to not become infected. And we know how to stop Ebola outbreaks. It’s called isolating infected patients, using biosafety precautions, isolating those who might have been infected to keep them from spreading the disease, and prohibiting contact with the deceased victims who could potentially infect those who come in contact with the remains. Common sense precautions that could limit the spread of the disease. Carson isn’t about using common sense.

I watched Jaws last night, and it’s amazing how effective is is, especially since you normally only get a quick fleeting shot of the shark. (of course a lot of that was due to technical issues, but it is SO effective)

At some level he probably rationalizes this as being a realist position. That there’s no US interest in intervening to save the lives of the Yezidi or stopping the ISIS advance even though the group has already shown its willingness to engage in ethnic cleansing and indicates genocidal intent against anyone who doesn’t adhere to their view of Islam.

The problem is that his worldview doesn’t include reality. There are legitimate reasons for the US and the rest of the world to intervene against ISIS and put them down as a bunch of rabid dogs. Their acts in furtherance of committing genocide being chief among them. Realism is about power politics, and it is in the US interest to protect the Yezidi and Kurds and these oppressed groups. The President is doing just enough to provide assistance without entangling us once again in the ground fight or nation building. We’re giving these groups a chance to hold their own, and maybe even give the Maliki government a chance to get in the game and get their own house in order to take the fight to ISIS and push them out altogether.

US presidents come in with rhetoric that harken to every other kind of political theory out there about international affairs, but once in office, it almost always comes back to realism/neo-realism - power politics, balance of powers, and identifying foreign interests that align with US interests and doing what is necessary to maintain and strengthen those ties. Obama is doing what his predecessors have done - and taking acts where necessary.

Greenwald seems offended by this - that the US acts in furthering its own interests.

If a website relies on content supplied by other places, like ads, embedded videos, statistics, etc., it’s simply not possible yet to “use HTTPS by default” because many of the suppliers of this external content are not using HTTPS.

At LGF, we use HTTPS for sign-ins, user settings management, and other places where it’s feasible, but this kind of statement from someone who should know better is just bullshit.

The way Adsense works, though, is that the ad content is actually supplied by the advertisers; Adsense is sort of a middle man in the process. So if the advertiser doesn’t use HTTPS to supply the content, that’s it, you’re out of luck.

And there are actually very compelling reasons why advertisers resist using HTTPS — because secure, encrypted connections make their tracking and metrics systems fail. Some of the information they rely on for these abilities simply isn’t present in a secure connection. And advertisers REALLY like having those abilities.

I don’t see this situation changing any time soon, for that reason.

One of the reasons I tolerate a few fungus gnats around my plants* is to supply amusement to the Feline Overlords.

* - The gnats are courtesy of using potting soil with high amounts of organic matter. If it has surface exposure then there is sufficient fungus growth to support a *lot* of tiny gnats. Thus the reason I usually put 1/2” of sand on top of my soil layers once my plants sprout or are potted. Less food, fewer gnats.

2. Firing someone on any other day than end of the week, puts the individual in a position where he doesn’t have anywhere to go the next morning. The departure form normality starts right away tomorrow. If instead, you terminate on a Friday afternoon, the person will have the entire weekend to come to terms with what has happened. No work tomorrow, when tomorrow is a typical weekend day doesn’t seem as jarring as it might earlier in the week.

Sure, I get that. And on an objective level it makes sense, since this place pretty much clears out at 5pm daily and no one will be here over the weekend.

Still, I’m looking at the other side of that. They just laid off several IT guys on a Friday and this is a place where everyone is online and everyone is on the phone all day. Issues are inevitable. If they don’t have people ready to replace the layoffs, whoever is left in IT will be overwhelmed with issues and it will cause problems.

The mind is a powerful tool to a writer and director. Use it, do not abuse it.

Get the mind thinking with what the eyes thought they saw and it can conjure all kinds of thoughts about situations. Show the eyes too much and the mind just grows numb.

It’s sad so much modern movie making relies on computer graphics when they should be looking for writers. Good writers.

By the way, isn’t the movie industry struggling this summer? I think I heard it is way down on viewers and money making per film.

There’s a reason doctors are popular targets of scam artists peddling get rich quick schemes or illegal tax evasion scams. A certain native intelligence combined with an ego enhanced by the deference accorded them in their work environment leads many to believe they know a lot more than they do. And they have cash to spend. I know a bunch locally who lost their shirts years ago in the Great Arabian Horse scam wherein they were convinced that the rise in value of these wonderful beasts was the path to quick riches. And so they invested and watched the value of the animals rise to quite impressive heights. I was invited to join but declined. I had a question. Who races Arabian horses and where? The answer is pretty much nowhere outside of Arabia. And like the the tulip bubble of the Netherlands the whole thing collapsed and most of the poor horses wound up in Florida headed for the glue factory. Very sad.

Yeah, she’s almost a year old and is still pretty small. I got her at the start of the year. She’s grown some, but she has just stayed smaller. It makes bathing her easy, that’s for sure. Haha.

The older boy kitteh clearly has some Maine Coon in him, but he’s a mutt. He’s huge for a regular cat, but for a Maine Coon he’d be on the smaller end.

I am not particularly opposed to the new strikes in Iraq, but it does give me a sinking, resigned feeling. Is there no end to this?

It also seems very dangerous in many ways. Without good command and control on the ground, it could go wrong in a big way, especially since the militants can be counted on to set up a disaster if possible. With our own people on the ground, a whole new set of hazards and risks would appear. Iran has competent controllers, it is conceivable there could be some very low key cooperation.

Same kind of thing happens with worker’s compensation claims, etc., because it’s a matter of tracing back for liability.

I know the cause of death for my grandfather ended up being attributed to a service related injury 30+ years after the fact, which had implications for things like benefits for my grandmother. I see this in that same vein - where the underlying cause may have some importance for legal or financial reasons. However, I don’t anticipate any charges for the reasons goddamnedfrank outlined above.

Sure, I get that. And on an objective level it makes sense, since this place pretty much clears out at 5pm daily and no one will be here over the weekend.

Still, I’m looking at the other side of that. They just laid off several IT guys on a Friday and this is a place where everyone is online and everyone is on the phone all day. Issues are inevitable. If they don’t have people ready to replace the layoffs, whoever is left in IT will be overwhelmed with issues and it will cause problems.

Doesn’t matter. The people who made the firing decisions will blame the people they fired for the problems.

In modern management credit is always taken and blame is always avoided.

My brother and I were talking about having grown up in what we agreed was one of the primo places to learn prejudice - rural Pennsylvania. About the only exposure we had to nonwhites was migrant farmworkers, who came up from the South in Spring and left again around Thanksgiving.

Mom and Dad never spoke in bigoted terms, so we didn’t either, and we all deplored the bigotry of our friends and classmates. But both of us had the experience of feeling emotional reactions we could only call racism, which we had to consciously fight against, and still have to fight against.

So, in a way, it’s not surprising that some folks seem to become racists who hadn’t been before. The feelings, the reactions are there in many of us. It’s what you do when they arise that marks the difference.

The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory would like you to note that the park is not exploding.

3) The park has not been evacuated. This one is pretty easy to verify by everyone. If the Old Faithful webcam shows people, or if news articles are coming out about a hobbyist’s remote control helicopter crashing into a hot spring, Yellowstone is certainly open for business.

4) No volcanologists have stated that Yellowstone is likely to erupt this week, this month or this year. In one recent article, a name was attributed to a “senior volcanologist”, but that person does not appear to exist, and a geologist with that name assures us that he did not supply any quotes regarding Yellowstone.

If I remember correctly, her voice after being manipulated by autotune, comes off somewhat like a kazoo. A kazoo that has been bent and the membrane torn.

Of course! Child labor allows employers to pay even less, and puts downward pressure on wages for adults. Remember, many of these folks are the same ones who ridicule fast food workers striking for higher wages.

Anyone who earns less than they do deserves to be treated like shit, and to earn even less, and should be fired for asking for more.

Anyone who earns more than they do is overpaid, unless earning VASTLY more, in which case they deserve it.

So a long time friend of mine posted an article about how Facebook, by forcing you to use their Messenger app, will be able to do things like (I shit you not) turn off your cellular service.

He basically went into an outrage, warning people of how dangerous Facebook is becoming. Yes, he did this by posting on Facebook.

He’s generally a smart guy, but Jesus, he’s running around telling people that a chat app will allow Facebook utter control of your phone.

And I’m sure whenever I see him next, I’ll be called a ‘Debbie Downer’ for pointing out how silly people are acting over this.

(For the record, I was called that by someone else for busting a FB myth. Literally, the guy was insisting I was making an online conversation unpleasant by pointing out he was spreading a false rumor.)

I’m seriously thinking about leaving FB at this point, or staying off it for a while.

Thank you. We’ve had some intermittent trouble, but fortunately we aren’t quite at the total fail point. Returning from a camping trip and doing 3 or 4 loads of wash in rapid succession gave us a warning and enough time to get the ball rolling since the worst blocked spot is extremely difficult to clear. We just can’t dump lots of water down at any one time right now and by mid-week everything should be shiny and new.

Old Orangeberg pipe? It lasts about fifty years before the roots infiltrate, at least here in Austin. My house was built in 1950, and we upgraded to PVC in 2001, by necessity. Not a lot of fun when you flush the toilet and it just stares at you. Ick.

It was a $1,500 job. The joys of home ownership!

Nope, a 50 year old partly clay, partly cast iron pipe. There is a steep hill involved, so things have shifted over the years, and the neighbor’s tree has found a great source of water to tap into. Unfortunately, this has to be replaced all the way out to the main sewer line in the middle of the street, and the local sanitary district no longer considers itself responsible for anything except the main line, so it’s all ours. The plumber can’t do trenchless because of the location of a water main, so we’re talking about trenching halfway across the street and repaving. It will cost many times as much as yours.

Yikes! Bell and butt clay pipe is one of the banes of my existing, being an emergency response guy. You would be surprised, or perhaps not, how many municipalities still have it as a mainstay of their sanitary sewer systems. When water levels rise due to rains, and that water level gets to where the utility trays are, anything floating on the water, like historic gasoline releases, has direct access to the line and, downstream, the sewage treatment plant.

In 2000, a gasoline release killed the treatment plant in Henrietta, TX. Cost to the State? Over $500,000. Cost recovery so far from the Station owner/ Insurer? Zippo.
