I have nicknamed dinner “You Will Be My Valentine” because it included 12 cloves of garlic.
Tasty though. Really good for a dinner I made up as I went along. Cherry tomatoes, garlic, onion in olive oil, smush the tomatoes, add Italian seasoning, red peppers, basil, 1/2 cup of white wine, simmer down, stir in pasta.
And probably some salt and pepper.
Yum.

Ted Ligety cleaned house on his second Giant Slalom run at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Beaver Creek, CO (where I work) and goes in the record books.
The victory gave Ligety seven world championship medals, breaking a tie with Lindsey Vonn for most among United States skiers. Ligety has won five world championship gold medals and two Olympic gold medals. No other American has won as many major championship ski races.
It was also the first gold medal for the Americans at this year’s championships, and the first world title won on home soil by an American since 1989.

His knowledge of Viking history is weak. Not all Vikings were berserkers, who were only used in battle. Vikings began as raiders and pirates, but after a while discovered trade was much easier and tended to result in fewer casualties.

The trick is to judge (if we judge) people by what they personally do, unless there are overwhelming reasons for the opposite approach (like being in a highly centralized cult like CoS; but even then one should try, since an average Scientologist is hardly evil, rather most probably duped). But there’s something in our brain that makes us generalize if we’re not careful. Maybe I would have judged all Christians by what Fischer does or what the Inquisition did when I was like 14. Seems like lots of people are stuck in that mental age.

Number one granddaughter (9 yrs old) invited grandmother and me to celebrate Friday the 13th.
Wait!
First was “Sponge Bob, Sponge Out of Water” at the movies (wonder if Krabby Patties is going to be a new beach front franchise), but am a fan of cartoon Sponge Bob, and Antonio Banderas.
Then at home, “Bad Hair Day,” followed by 1976’s “Freaky Friday - A mother and daughter find their personalities switched and have to live each other’s lives on one strange Friday - (she prefers the original version).
Complete with popcorn & brownies.
Pretty good day.

We’ve gotten pretty cold weather before, but these kinds of winds are an entirely different situation. We’ll only be in the teens for the most part and little to no precip (hopefully) so I’d say we just need to bite the bullet and hope no lines come down.

Looks like that fire that ripped through a Houston Islamic community center was intentionally set. It was arson; accelerants were found.
Fire officials now say an accelerant was used in a fire that broke out at an Islamic community and education center in southeast Houston early Friday morning, and now a group is calling for an investigation into whether the fire was the result of a possible hate crime.
Houston fire officials say the fire at the Quba Islamic Institute started around 5am. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but we’ve learned HFD says the accelerant was used, which usually points to a purposeful act. Those same investigators met with leaders at another Islamic center just miles away, letting them know that this was an act of arson and to be on alert.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations is calling on state and federal authorities to investigate the fire as a possible hate crime.
That call comes as Ahsan Zahid, assistant Imam at the institute, says he spoke with the Houston arson investigator about their preliminary results.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Shots were fired Saturday at a cafe in Copenhagen that was hosting a freedom of speech event organized by Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who has faced numerous threats for caricaturing the Prophet Muhammad.
Some 30 bullet holes ripped through the window of the Krudttoenden cafe and at least two people were taken away on stretchers, including a uniformed police officer, the TV2 channel said Saturday.

Another chance for Chris Christie to demonstrate how well he can work with Obama to get the job done?
No, Christie will blame Barack Obama for delaying aid. Even if Obama outfitted a number of Secret Service SUVs with snowplows and led them to New Jersey himself, Christie would have the New Jersey State Police pull Obama over for DWB just to avoid giving Obama credit.
Why? Because if Christie gives Obama credit now, his presidential chances will evaporate faster than the remnants of this snowstorm will come April. He’d be vilified as a RINO.

All you snow people, I’m with Darthstar above. Not because I’m a skier — haven’t been for quite some time — but because this freakishly warm weather is giving me the creeps, and we’re going to have no drinking water in the summer if it doesn’t start snowing here at some point, and no apples if it doesn’t freeze.
On my walk home from work last night, I cut across the nearby golf course as I tend to do in winter, and I encountered golfers. In mid February. In the “Greatest Snow on Earth” state. Same thing happened Christmas eve.
I also had to spend hundreds of dollars last night getting roots removed from my drain pipes. My yard requires weeding. This is just ALL WRONG! :(
I’m sorry for the east coast’s difficulties, truly I am. Excessive snow coupled with wind and frozen roads and pipes is life-threatening. But I grew up with snow piled on either side of the sidewalks far above my head. That is normal for here. I live in the same state I grew up in. That image of Darthstar’s needs to be discussed on a national level, not just for the drama and chill on the right half the country, but also for the giant red blotch that is the heat and dryness on the left half the country.

OK, fine, here you go:
A special commission set up by Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy after the Sandy Hook shooting may include a number of recommendations in its final report from registering all firearms, to tracking ammo, and screening owners.
The 16-member Sandy Hook Advisory Commission, established two years ago following the December 2012 Newtown incident in which 20 children and six adults were killed, will consider its final draft report Friday. The expansive 256-page document includes some 95 recommendations on mental health, the physical security of schools, and most controversially, guns.
“We’re balking at taking the next step, which is literally taking the guns out of the hands of bad people,” commission chair Hamden Mayor Scott Jackson told the CT Post.
Besides previous recommendations to prohibit both the sale and possession of any firearm capable of holding 10 rounds or more without the provision to grandfather guns, included in interim reports, the final draft calls for any shell casing for ammunition sold in the state have a serial number etched on it for tracing purposes.
Next, all firearms should be registered and ammunition buyers would be restricted to only the caliber chambered for their licensed guns. Those who have firearms licenses, stresses the report should at every renewal pass a test of firearms handling capacity as well as an understanding of state and local laws.

re: #237 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD
Why?
Because of the way movies get shown in North America (it’s worth noting that movies are released in the US and Canada at the same time and are tracked as a single regional market). To really do a book with a S&M theme justice would earn the movie an NC-17, which precludes the movie having a large budget. This is because most movie theaters in the US and many in Canada simply will not screen a movie with an NC-17 rating. In the Chicago metro area only 5 theaters will do that and Chicago is the #5 movie market in North America. Hence 50 Shades of Grey had to be watered down to be acceptable to the MPAA and movie theaters.
As an aside: Part of the reason some US theaters won’t show NC-17 movies is that they can get heavily fined if anyone underage gets into the film and often police will actively look to catch theaters teens in a theater showing such a movie in order to generate monies for the municipality the theater is in.

What I find perhaps even more terrorizing is the gun nuts who get drunk and think it’s fun to start showing off or playing with their “toys”. I’ve told the story about the guy here at the park (who was finally successfully evicted, making him someone else’s problem) who every few weeks decided to do just that with a bullet whizzing past a woman’s head one night as she slept in her own bed. We didn’t feel safe even taking our dogs out for nighttime walks for fear of getting shot.
There are only a few traditionally defined terrorists among us but there are a whole lot of idiot gun owners like this asshole.

Why? What in these proposals is so overly onerous for those wanting to own deadly weapons?
I like most of the proposals, but putting serial numbers on all brass probably isn’t ever going to happen. If it does it would put a seriously crazy hitch in recreational shooting. It’s hard to predict the cost increase on first sale, but it would be enormous for sure. Not sure how ranges that collect brass and sell to shops and re-loaders can make that work unless somebody invents an automated serial number reading machine (more cost) and appends a statewide database (more cost) with every transfer.
Also, leaving the brass at the range, whether optional or not, means risking having serial numbers traceable to you be picked up and reused by criminals. That’s a disincentive to go to the range at all.
Then there’s .22lr. That’s the most sold caliber, is a really tiny canvass to slap a serial number on. So the permutation space will eventually run without out there.
I can see where the idea has definite merit, but there’s no way to argue such a regulation wouldn’t also be immensely burdensome on the industry.

That’s a very valid objection, esp. WRT reloaders. There really wouldn’t be any way to trace bullets back in a “reasonable doubt” way, making that one not worth the costs. I do think that allowing the sale of ammo only for the caliber of gun registered is a good idea along with having to show ID and registration proof before ammo is sold. I could see that being very helpful in perhaps slowing down gang-related shootings.

I agree with you on that point. I don’t agree with all of the recommendations either.
But the fact is that they were just recommendations and what generally happens with committees and commissions is that a laundry list of recommendations end up being presented for consideration. Everyone involved in the final report get to put in their ideas and suggestions, and it’s a pretty good bet that there was not 100% agreement on each and every item recommended.
As a gun owner of many many years, I agree with many of the recommendations but certainly not all.

I blame the NRA pretty squarely for this mess on more than one level. At this point in 2015, more than any gun control organization the NRA has made honest debate almost impossible. they revel in their lobbying power to thwart gun control measures that they used to support. Universal handgun registration for one thing. ILA & LaPierre have destroyed the NRA.
Some states have come to a pretty well regulated place. And enjoy a big sport shooting community. I’m glad I live in one of those.

A misunderstanding among friends. If I had the button, I’d close comments in that Page. Next round at the brewpub is on me.
Closing the comments wouldn’t be very democratic.
Just look at it as another discussion, or lack thereof, over the gun problems in this country. The comments come with the discussion, and it also points out that no matter how much you may want to be in the middle of the discussion, it can’t happen as you will get jumped from both far ends.
I find the whole gun discussions thing worthless at this time. Until the NRA and its paid-for reps in Congress decide they are going to be up-front, honest, and thoughtful in any discussions, it will all turn to crap anyway.
In other words, when the right side of the political spectrum decides they are sick of all the shooting, or there is an inordinate amount of heat coming back at them to the point they need to tell the NRA where to go as a way of keeping their offices, not a damn thing is going to change.
Hell, even sane thinking on the right doesn’t stand a chance really. Congress already has dramatically low numbers as well as the Republican party. I don’t think they care. They don’t represent normal Republicans either, not enough money in it.
I figure nothing is going to be happening any time soon, so get ready for more mass killings and just frown and bear it.
Guns cause paralysis. Not just if they hit major nerves. They cause it in the brains of people that should simply know better, without a shot fired.
Welcome to American. We really aren’t all that exceptional. In fact over this issue we are a backwards third-world hell-hole.

I thought about getting one of those for camping in rattlesnake country but they are illegal here in California. The State has it’s own separate definition of short barreled shotgun that doesn’t distinguish between a gun originally designed to shoot from the shoulder and a rifled pistol that just happens to also chamber a shotshell.

Oh those poor, put-upon gun folks in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin Carry activist Nik Clarke… said that he believes that gun-free school zone laws infringe upon his rights as a gun owner because it imposes an unreasonable burden for him to have to constantly unload and then reload his weapon.
Clarke explained that while Wisconsin’s concealed carry laws allow people to have their weapons in school zones, they are not allowed to bring them on school grounds, which he believes is unreasonable.
…”Leaving those land mines out there for citizens is really dangerous,” he said. “It’s really concerning that these mothers and fathers picking their kids up from school could be exposing themselves to a felony charge,” Clarke fretted.
Therefore, people must be allowed to bring loaded, ready-to-fire weapons on to school grounds whenever they please. It’s the only way to keep them out of trouble, he said.

In Cincinnati we’re having mix of clouds and sun, wind gusts up to 40 mph and (earlier) snow squalls but no accumulation where I live. Especially if the criminals have dark skin tones and believe in non-Evangelical Christian forms of religion. Then you need to double up on guns and ammo.
So, the only senseless thing to do is grab your guns and start shooting.

Huh? *blinking* Um, isn’t that exactly what Daesh & other terrorist groups do?
Then this, from the Justice Minister:
“Based on what we know so far, it would have been devastating, mass casualties would have been a real possibility,” Justice Minister Peter MacKay said, according to Reuters. “This appeared to be a group of murderous misfits that were coming here, or living here, and were planning to wreak havoc and mayhem on our community.”
“The attack does not appear to have been culturally motivated, therefore not linked to terrorism,” he added.

These are the things that were wrong with prospective students when I taught self defense part time. We had teachers & classes from boxing out through tactical guns. Anecdotal? Yup. Take it as candor from a native son.
Too many of us Americans who take up self defense in some form or another want shortcuts and conveniences just like we seem to so many subjects. Right off the top an exaggerated sense of the risk.
Consider please the combined din of increasing urban density, poverty, 24/7 sensationalized news, Hollywood glorification of violence and NRA posturing. A recent recession kicked a whole lot of people into poverty. Fast food research.
The last resort becomes the first thing addressed. Guns bought before the hard work of reducing the risk began. Or a foolish faith in that four hour self defense class. With a complete lack of follow up. Fast food answers following our fast food methods are our self inflicted problem.
Having said all that let’s admit living alone, or in a job that puts you in more dangerous areas or if you have a serious stalker / ex spouse etc is not a situation to be blithely blown off. Take steps but step with care is the thing.

Well, he already got rid of the MBTA director, so he has to do something//
This, of course, is the first great crisis for our new Republican Governor, Charlie Baker, and it has become plain that, when it comes to passing the buck, ducking the blame, and finding a scapegoat, our man Charlie has mad governatin’ skillz. In the middle of the last storm, when the region’s antiquated mass transit system simply was overwhelmed by the weather, Baker announced that this was something up with which he would not put any longer. He roasted the MBTA—and its director, Beverly Scott—for not living up to his expectations and those of the guy who drives his state-financed SUV.

The man wrote a letter to the local newspaper complaining that without his gun he felt insecure and complained he should have been able to carry it while up here in Canada.
My first thought was, “WTF - you chickenshit.”
That was my first realization that American attitudes toward guns is significantly different than Canadian. I live in a province where the majority of people are rural and have in the past or do now own a rifle so gun ownership isn’t unusual. The feeling of insecurity because of a lack of a gun is unusual.

And my frustration was D_F throwing out the “gun grabbers” insult, derailing any possible discussion.
Sorry about that. I had wanted the discussion to proceed on the track RWC had planned for it and got frustrated when it was diverted. I’d read a previous story about the Commission’s planned recommendations and I wrote that post with a semi-conscious objective of expressing my somewhat-irrational annoyance at the planned conversation having been diverted. It would have been suicidally stupid of me to aim that annoyance at Charles (it is his website, after all) so I aimed it at “gun-grabbers” on the commission.
In retrospect I should have posted the link I posted this morning last night on RWC’s Page and then tried politely to divert the conversation back to where I wanted it. Instead I got hostile, and nothing good came of it. I’m sorry that happened and I’ll work harder to prevent it from happening.

re: #321 ObserverArt
We live in FOX news and Conservatopia where anything that happens in one part of this country is made out to sound as if it happened next door and the criminals are standing just outside yours.
Especially if the criminals have dark skin tones and believe in non-Evangelical Christian forms of religion. Then you need to double up on guns and ammo.
So, the only senseless thing to do is grab your guns and start shooting.

It isn’t the national news-networks that should be blamed for people’s preceptions of crime, not mostly. Fox News has done its share of bad work on this score (as witness their infamous “knock-out game” coverage), but most people get their crime news from local media sources. And local network affiliates and newspapers tend to cover sensational crimes at a much great rate than that at which they occur.

My grandson asks me why I keep the door locked during the day, unless I or we are on the patio. And as we’re on the ground floor, the windows aren’t left open at night or if we’re away. Safety first, I tell him.
My neighbor keeps her door unlocked most of the time, even if she steps out to go to a store and, a couple of weeks ago, her son claims someone came in and took some items (he’s 18 and it was probably an acquaintance). Young men that age can have ‘enemies’ over the smallest slights.

Yorkshire pud mixed and resting, awaiting transformation in the oven when it’s time for the roast to rest.
Roasted taties and gravy (lots of gravy!) and a salad to complete the menu.

That may have been true at one time, but not any longer:
The Personal News Cycle: How Americans choose to get their news
Introduction
Contrary to the conventional wisdom about media consumption dividing along generational or political lines, a new survey finds that the nature of the news itself — the topic and speed of the story — largely determines where people go to learn about events and the path they take to get there.
The findings also suggest that some long-held beliefs about people relying on just a few primary sources for news are now obsolete.
In contrast to the idea that one generation tends to rely on print, another on television and still another the web, the majority of Americans across generations now combine a mix of sources and technologies to get their news each week, according to the survey by the Media Insight Project, an initiative of the American Press Institute and the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
Where people go for news, moreover, depends significantly on the topic of the story — whether it is sports or science, politics or weather, health or arts — and on the nature of the story — whether it is a fast-moving event, a slower-moving trend, or an issue that the person follows passionately. I haven’t read the MM piece yet, but let me guess on what the RWNJs are saying: President Obama is “acting beneath the dignity of his office”, right?

Which is itself a continuation of the wingnut theme that all the “important” things in the world are not being addressed. What’s “important”? Whatever they think makes the President look bad but isn’t get 24/7 coverage. Even if it means dragging out non-troversies to beat like the proverbial dead horse.

::: snicker :::
Don’t just snicker, Laugh. Because Ronald Reagan made that gesture with a stern face in order to get laughs. He was an entertainer before he was a politician, and he did not forget the value of humor as president.
Thus any wingnuts who use Reagan to attack Obama on this point will only reveal that they don’t really know who Ronald Reagan was. Because Reagan wasn’t a fool for the gesture and expression seen in that photo, the fools are those who try to put a him atop a pedestal.

Correction; Actually, NRO did indeed complain that it was beneath the dignity of the office.
Oddly enough, while they claimed it was disrespectful to Kayla Mueller (especially the use of YOLO), who died at the hands if Daesh, they didn’t complain that it was disrespectful to the three Muslim college students who had been killed just a couple of days before at the hands of a fellow American.
Weird, huh? //

re: #335 b_sharp
A couple of years ago we held the Grey Cup here, which we also won. A visitor from the US, an ex-LEO was walking through Victoria Park and was approached by a couple of drunk fans celebrating the win. All they wanted was to make sure he knew we won and asked if he saw the game.
A few years ago my best mate from back home (Australia) and I did a driving tour around the US, heading up through the Great Lakes into Canada. He was a cop at that time, and in most towns we stopped, we would find the local cops and he would introduce himself, talk for a bit, and so on. In one town near the border, the cops warned him not to introduce himself as a cop in Canada, because they were not friendly to cops there.
Australians and Canadians have a certain bond, so naturally we ignored that and introduced ourselves as soon as we crossed. The Canadian cops laughed and said they were only unfriendly to American cops, because the American cops kept trying to smuggle their guns across the border and carry them.
On another occasion, the local cops in the US invited my mate to ride along for an evening with them. As soon as they got in the car, they handed him a shotgun to carry, and use if anything happened.
Holy shit.
This was a small town, so absolutely nothing was likely to happen. But without any qualms, they handed a guy they’d only just met, who happened to have a foreign police badge but without any inkling of his qualifications, a loaded weapon with instructions to use it. Despite having absolutely no legal standing in this country to do so. What the fuck.
The prevalence of guns in the US is one thing. But the true insanity is the American attitude towards guns, where guns are sacred, religious objects, more precious than anything including humans. And that Americans should expect to have to fight with their guns at any time, and that guns are an accepted method of resolving disputes.
It’s not just the ammosexuals or other gun nuts. Ordinary Americans everywhere, even those that don’t own guns, blandly accept that guns are more important no matter how many small children get shot. They reflexively balk at any suggestion that less guns may be a good thing, because it contradicts their faith that guns are there to fight with and shoot bad guys with. And that they are somehow, bizarrely, less free if people aren’t shooting each other.
