Ted Cruz Gets the Birther Treatment From His Own Party

Sheer poetry

After more than 8 years of right wing Birther insanity, it’s difficult to express my sense of absolute poetic justice to see conservatives beginning to rip one of their own leading presidential candidates to shreds over the very same stupid issue. And now John McCain is joining the chorus, saying he “doesn’t know” if Ted Cruz is eligible to be president.

Rand Paul is also climbing on this absurd bandwagon, saying Cruz is eligible to be “prime minister of Canada.” Sick burn! Rand had previously said he had no doubt Cruz was eligible to be POTUS and wouldn’t do what he’s now doing, which is pretty much par for the Republican course.

And Ann Coulter, whose star has seriously faded on the far right lately, chimes in as well:

Don’t forget, tRump wants him to file a preemptive suit to have the courts declare him a U.S. citizen.

Of course he conveniently ignores the fact that it’s mainly his supporter that are asking the question.

I’ve noticed a shift in Wingnut posts about BENGHAZII!!!!! recently. It used to be that they’d cite something about emails, or some question they thought Trey Gowdy should ask, or similar. Recently, it’s all been about the families of one or more of the dead guys calling her a liar.

Now, why the families would have any sort of knowledge, and why they aren’t calling the people who conducted the 7 different investigations liars for saying the same thing, I don’t know.

It’s gone from questioning or outright misstating facts, to an emotional appeal. Seems kinda desperate.

Obama: Look, we need to do something about gun violence.
Republicans: First, let’s repeal Obamacare.
Obama: What does that have to do with guns?
Republicans: Then we’ll need to get an amendment that stops gay marriage.
Obama: What does that-
Republicans: And it would help if you and Biden would resign.

Re-posted from the previous thread which I did not realize was dead:

The Great Lost Kinks Album wasn’t even a bootleg. It was released by their American record company (Reprise). I bought it when it first came out but like a fool I sold it in the 80’s. The song is on Kinks Kronikles, which is a great easy-to-find retrospective of their ‘missing’ years in the late 60’s.

I love The Great Lost Kinks Album. We kept ours till our son said he wanted it. What can I say, we raised him well….

(Once, at a family reunion, when our son was about 10, his uncle complimented him on how he looked in his dress-up togs. Our son completely surprised him when he responded that he was a “dedicated follower of fashion,” and then grinned. His uncle was also a Kinks fan and was just flabbergasted that a ten year old in the 1990’s would know that song.)

Yes.
Especially since I’ve noticed quite a few recent hatchlings (with somewhat suspect user names) who never even log in, much less comment.

You know, it’s pretty galling that McCain would claim that Cruz has a citizenship issue, when McCain’s own history was questioned all because he was born in the Canal Zone.

The law requires being a US natural born citizen. That means having at least one parent who is a US citizen.

McCain met that requirement. So too did Obama. As does Cruz.

But citizenship isn’t what bothers me about Cruz (or McCain). It’s their extremist positions that ignore the law, the general welfare of the nation, and a willingness to shred the safety net so as to engage in massive redistribution of wealth to the rich from everyone else (like shifting tax burdens from the rich to everyone else). Every GOP tax plan incorporates this tax burden shift. The ACA repeal efforts are another effort to redistribute the burdens from the haves to the have nots (plus adding massively to the national debt - something Speaker Ryan is lying his ass off about when he claims there’d be savings).

Time Warner Cable is warning that login credentials for 320,000 customers may have been stolen. The TV cable and Internet service provider told Reuters that e-mail passwords may have been harvested by malware installed on customers’ computers or that the potentially compromised passcodes may have been the result of data breaches of other companies that stored Time Warner Cable customer information. The company is still investigating how the data was obtained, but so far has found no indications that its systems were breached.

2008:

congress.gov

Whereas the Constitution of the United States requires that, to be eligible for the Office of the President, a person must be a “natural born Citizen” of the United States;

Whereas the term “natural born Citizen”, as that term appears in Article II, Section 1, is not defined in the Constitution of the United States;

Whereas there is no evidence of the intention of the Framers or any Congress to limit the constitutional rights of children born to Americans serving in the military nor to prevent those children from serving as their country’s President;

Whereas such limitations would be inconsistent with the purpose and intent of the “natural born Citizen” clause of the Constitution of the United States, as evidenced by the First Congress’s own statute defining the term “natural born Citizen”;

Whereas the well-being of all citizens of the United States is preserved and enhanced by the men and women who are assigned to serve our country outside of our national borders;

Whereas previous presidential candidates were born outside of the United States of America and were understood to be eligible to be President; and

Whereas John Sidney McCain, III, was born to American citizens on an American military base in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That John Sidney McCain, III, is a “natural born Citizen” under Article II, Section 1, of the Constitution of the United States.

Honestly, I see this as Cruz’s years of being an utter douchebag to his colleagues coming back to bite him squarely in the ass. He’s prided himself time and again for pissing off members of Congress on both sides of the aisle, regularly pissing in the Cheerios of the leadership whenever it suited him to do so. He became the public face of the ‘13 Shutdown, putting in a stark light just how little control Boehner had over his own caucus.

It’s not surprising that, now that the man is becoming the target of The Donald’s ire, the party is taking the opportunity presented to unload.

I’ve got the album on my wish list at Amazon, but the cheapest copies are around $50. I think that all of the songs have been picked up on various reissues, but the LP is going to stay on my wish list to see if I can find one a bit cheaper.

I saw some lower prices here, but there was a fair bit of variation based on wear and sleeve condition.

re: #85 Nyet

It should, given that the hajj is a requirement for all Muslims able to make the journey.

The problem is that Iranians have right to be wary of the Saudi management of the hajj, especially given this past year’s stampede at/near Jamaraat Bridge, which the Saudis claim killed only 769, but the AP, AFP and Iranians all figure the death toll was actually more than 3 times that amount - at nearly 2,400 killed.

The highest number of those killed were from Iran, including a former Iranian ambassador to Lebanon.

The Iranians have been calling on someone else to manage the hajj preparations besides the Saudis, but the Saudis say that they’re doing all they can to keep the pilgrims safe - even most of that means destroying any historical sites and paving them over or building new bridges/approaches to the most dangerous part of the pilgrimage - the Jamaraat Bridge and Stoning the Devil ritual.

Nyet  Jan 7, 2016 • 1:18:08pm

re: #236 Nyet

I found the judgment in the case, and it adds even more nuance (google translate):

The relationship between Daniel Gebru and the family he lived with seemingly have been good.

During the day July 25, 2015, Daniel Gebru part in everyday activities in
apartment. At the time of the event, on the evening of the same day, was Rahel Tsegaye
- Aunt Yosan Afewerki - in the apartment to suit Yosan Afewerki since
Selemawit Zegay worked. At 20:00 pm the same night alerted the police and
ambulance to the apartment. In the apartment anträffades Yosan Afewerki with cuts
throat and Daniel Gebru with a knife inserted in the throat. When the police and
paramedics arrived at the scene was Yosan Afewerki on the floor of the hall and Daniel
Gebru low or half-sitting in the right corner of the bathroom. Yosan Afewerki
was pronounced dead in the apartment while Daniel Gebru with life-threatening injuries
transported to hospital.[…]
The interrogation appears at first to Daniel Gebru told of how he was on
evening, he had a strong anxiety and wanted to take his life, he took with him two
knives from the kitchen and stood in front of the mirror in the bathroom and talking to himself
if he would take his life or not.
In addition, shows that Daniel Gebru during interrogation said that someone came and
hugged him from behind and he was frightened of it, why he jumped.
During interrogation, he submitted different if he understood that it was Yosan
Afewerki or not that had come into the bathroom. He told me that he did not
believes that the door to the bathroom was closed at this time.
Furthermore, he has told during interrogation that he put the knives on the floor and then
locking the door and hit Yosan Afewerki and then himself with a knife, but it was
dark for him, and that he does not remember.
Finally, Daniel Gebru told during interrogation that Yosan Afewerki lay on her back on
floor, and he grabbed her throat when he hurt her. He also showed at
questioning how he cut her and told her how he hurt himself and the
the position he held at the toilet when he did it.
It must here again be emphasized that Daniel Gebru during interrogation constantly explained
he had severe anxiety and that it was dark and he did not know in which world
he was in.[…]
In the forensic psychiatric statement has in this part stated that Daniel Gebru, as a result of
serious mental disorder at the time of the act, had an impaired ability to recognize
offense meaning and to adapt their actions for such insight. District Court
do not find, with regard to what has previously expressed about the reliability of
Daniel Gebrus to police questioning information, the reason to question it
the basis on which that conclusion was based.
Overall, therefore, the court finds that it is undisputed that Daniel Gebru at
the act currently not totally lacked insight into his actions. The District Court therefore finds
Daniel Gebru been sufficiently aware of his actions because he injured
Yosan Afewerki.
[…]
Initially, it can be stated that it involved a defenseless child who has become
killed in his own home. This suggests that the act should be regarded as murder.
The circumstances speak in another direction is that Daniel Gebru gone to
the bathroom in order to take his own life, which he later also tried to do.
There is no evidence other than that it has been a matter of a very short
events and that the offense is committed during premeditation. Nor is support
for it involved a particularly reckless actions by Daniel Gebrus page
which resulted in unnecessary suffering for Yosan Afewerki beyond the suffering itself
knife cutting involved. Moreover, it is undisputed that Daniel Gebru the deed occasion
had a serious mental disorder and an impaired ability to control their
action. Finally, it is not shown other than to Daniel Gebru committed the act
with indifference intent.
All in all, therefore, according to the court the circumstances of the offense must be
assessed as homicide.
Daniel Gebru is by killing Yosan Afewerki guilty of manslaughter
In summary, it is the District Court established that Daniel Gebru has made itself
guilty of the accused offense. He will be with regard to the circumstances of
the act is not convicted of murder, but of manslaughter.

The guy is objectively mentally ill. Which doesn’t depend on his race, nationality, etc.

Andy also runs a home schooling group so he sets the curriculum for the parents to follow. Many of the articles are written by his “students” as school assignments. Which of course means that they have to say whatever Andy wants to hear. :(

I saw that. I think she’s awesome.

CL, I’m not meaning to be a jerk. I’m not insensitive to religious needs (I’m Jewish and wearing wigs boggles my mind). What anyone does on their own is up to them. I take issue when culture or men specifically force women to do things. When whatever one decides to wear is voluntary I support it 100%. It is not always voluntary. THAT is my issue. I will never abide by women being subjugated by the will of others, religiously, culturally or any way.

When I see a burka I see subjugation. I see women being punished because of men’s lack of control. A burka isn’t modesty, it’s a wall.

I’d never, ever tell someone what to wear or not wear. I just want all women to be allowed to make their own decisions. And I always will.

I hope you understand I’m not attacking your religion. Not in any way. Im terribly sorry that I offended you. That wasn’t and isn’t my intent. I’m advocating freedom for women to choose how they live their lives. Freely and by their own decisions.

Maybe I am just being dense, but I don’t see how to reconcile “I support the right of women to wear what they choose” and “any time I see a woman in a burqa or a hijab, I’m seeing subjugation.”

The second one is explicitly stripping women of their right to choose by assuming that the circumstances in which the decision is being made do not allow them to make their own choice.

Anyway, that might be where the disconnect is coming from. Just as I see it.

You didn’t offend me you just sort of… mildly annoyed me I guess, heh. Muslim women sometimes get tired of non-Muslim women telling them how to be free without first asking them if they’re dressing as they do by choice.

Men do it too. Once, I had a middle-aged biker guy at a convenience store lean towards me and tell me ever so sincerely (speaking slowly to make sure I understood), “You know, you’re in America now and you don’t have to dress that way.” I’m pretty sure my eyes bugged out and my temples started throbbing, but I managed to keep my cool and tell him that while I appreciated his concern, I was born in America and was well acquainted with my rights.

“I support the right of women to wear what they choose, from the range of clothing I find acceptable.”

Because not every woman has a choice. When every woman has a choice I don’t care what they want to wear. It’s their choice.

I should add a fifth but the drywall info isn’t immediately at hand and honestly I have burned through all of my phone call mojo.

Roofing, termite inspection, handyman to try and get the vent screens fixed, AND an appointment for a physical with a new doctor because my last one moved.

Maybe I will go have a peanut butter ball from the fridge.

The fridge repairman comes tomorrow.

OH and the trailer went in for service this morning.

Some extreme militia members are sneaking out to the local motel (and getting drunk on internet crowdsource funding) because things are not getting to Red Dawn scenario fast enough for them.

That’s what I think this whole thing was about, why they didn’t bring snacks. Or blankets. They expected an immediate ass-kicking, where they could go into “I get to blow up every Fed I see because they’re trying to kill me” response.

They didn’t get it and some of them are bored.

It is wise of the Feds to deny these nut jobs the violent confrontations they crave.

However, consequences should follow in due course, and there the Feds have dropped the ball big time. Cliven Bundy et al. have apparently suffered no penalties for their treasonous circus act. This ‘victory’ has doubtless inspired pinheads all over the country to engage in more of the same.

re: #342 CuriousLurker

I understand that these are my issues.

This is not about what’s worn as much as how I view women and their lack of choice. It’s cultural more than religious. Fundamentalist Christians set me off equally (that the Duggar’s are wildly popular angers me. Women and girls are treated like chattel and the man/boy can do what they want with virtually no repercussions.)

When women can’t drive without a man being present. Where women can’t leave their homes within a man. Girls can’t go to school.

Here, the republicans don’t want women to be allowed to drive their own destinies. If you get pregnant you better marry - and make that person happy - for that’s your life. Deal with it you slut. Close your knees next time.

It’s all about women to me. Always. I don’t care what their religion is, where they’re from or any of that. If I see what I consider injustice, right or wrong, it angers me.

4 phone calls? Sorry, but we’ll have to ask for your Introvert Card back.

I made ONE phone call to a gubmint agency in Indiana to see how to get a copy of my FIL’s marriage certificate because apparently that is one of the things required on the VA form to get some kind of VA benefit for nursing home costs since he had his stroke a couple of months ago (current nursing home is charging something like $10,000 a month and won’t let him have his dentures, eyeglasses, or cellphone…FUCK THAT!)

Anyway, the Circuit Clerk in the county where mom and dad got married had it in their official books and made a certified copy and mailed it to my sister-in-law (who is dealing with all this nonsense in real time in South Carolina) at no charge because it was something required by the VA.

So, there we have it…one upding to the State of Indiana.
