Wow, Loesch and Arpaio both in one day. What a coup!

Sources: NBC News And Union Leader To Announce Unsanctioned Democratic Debate

ANKENY, Iowa — BuzzFeed News has learned NBC News and The New Hampshire Union Leader will announce on Tuesday their plans to host an unsanctioned Democratic debate in New Hampshire on Feb. 4, according to two sources familiar with the discussions.

Democratic candidates are being told the moderators will be NBC News’ Chuck Todd and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, according to the two sources. The debate will air on MSNBC.

The NBC-Union Leader debate will take place five days before New Hampshire primary voting on Feb. 9. It’s unclear how the DNC will react to the new debate, or which candidates will participate in it.

The Democratic National Committee scheduled six debates between the Democratic candidates. That number was enforced by a rule barring any candidate who participated in a so-called “unsanctioned” debate outside those six from participating in any of the DNC forums. The next DNC debate will take place Feb. 11, after the New Hampshire primary.

“The comments of the UN Secretary General encourage terror,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “There is no justification for terror.”

Earlier, Ban told the UN Security Council of the “profound sense of alienation and despair driving some Palestinians — especially young people” in the upsurge of attacks on Israelis since the start of October.

“Palestinian frustration is growing under the weight of a half century of occupation and the paralysis of the peace process,” he said.

“As oppressed peoples have demonstrated throughout the ages, it is human nature to react to occupation, which often serves as a potent incubator of hate and extremism.”

It’s on!

MSNBC and the New Hampshire Union-Leader will host an unsanctioned Democratic presidential debate just days before the state’s first-in-the-nation primary, the newspaper confirmed Tuesday.

“Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow will host the Feb. 4 debate, scheduled five days before the state’s primary, BuzzFeed news first reported.

There was no word on whether Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) or former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would participate, but former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley said in a statement he would attend the debate.

54
wrenchwench  Jan 26, 2016 • 1:00:09pm

But let’s be honest. From the beginning, it was obvious that the use of fetal tissue in research as a stand-alone issue was something conservatives don’t particularly care about; its only purpose was that it provided a means to attack Planned Parenthood. They hadn’t been worked up about fetal tissue research before (indeed, some Republicans had in the past voted to allow it), and you may have noticed that they haven’t advocated outlawing fetal tissue research since the videos were released. They don’t hate Planned Parenthood because it provides fetal tissue to medical researchers, they hate Planned Parenthood because it provides abortions, because it’s unapologetic about advocating for women’s reproductive rights, and oh yeah, because through its political affiliate it supports Democrats.

The rest of it is good too.

I’ve been sort of piecemeal reading a Vanity Fair story about Trump’s divorce from Ivana, and I just went back to it after a couple of days. This bit is pretty interesting, and it corroborates other stories that have mentioned Trump’s fascination with Hitler.

Donald Trump appears to take aspects of his German background seriously. John Walter works for the Trump Organization, and when he visits Donald in his office, Ivana told a friend, he clicks his heels and says, “Heil Hitler,” possibly as a family joke.

Last April, perhaps in a surge of Czech nationalism, Ivana Trump told her lawyer Michael Kennedy that from time to time her husband reads a book of Hitler’s collected speeches, My New Order, which he keeps in a cabinet by his bed. Kennedy now guards a copy of My New Order in a closet at his office, as if it were a grenade. Hitler’s speeches, from his earliest days up through the Phony War of 1939, reveal his extraordinary ability as a master propagandist.

“Did your cousin John give you the Hitler speeches?” I asked Trump.

Trump hesitated. “Who told you that?”

“I don’t remember,” I said.

“Actually, it was my friend Marty Davis from Paramount who gave me a copy of Mein Kampf, and he’s a Jew.” (“I did give him a book about Hitler,” Marty Davis said. “But it was My New Order, Hitler’s speeches, not Mein Kampf. I thought he would find it interesting. I am his friend, but I’m not Jewish.”)

Later, Trump returned to this subject. “If I had these speeches, and I am not saying that I do, I would never read them.”

According to Napolitano, the outcome should have been a nearly automatic indictment against Planned Parenthood because both the “fiercely pro-life” lieutenant governor, Dan Patrick, and the district attorney were Republicans.

“The grand jury does not turn around and indict your witnesses, the people who brought you the case, without the prosecutor wanting this to happen!” Napolitano exclaimed.

He continued: “So, why would this prosecutor, appointed by Gov. [Rick] Perry, a former judge, a Republican woman, why would this prosecutor want to do this other than to send a message like, ‘I might be a Republican but leave Planned Parenthood alone’?”

“Leave it alone?” Napolitano shouted. “They’re using tax dollars to kill babies and sell their body parts!”

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man has filed a federal lawsuit challenging Ted Cruz’s eligibility to run for president over the senator’s Canadian birthplace.

Walter L. Wagner asked a judge to declare that Cruz is not a natural born citizen in the suit filed in Salt Lake City on Friday. Wagner is representing himself and says he is a voter with an interest in determining whether Cruz is a legal presidential candidate.

Samy Mohamed Hamzeh, 23, has been charged with possessing machine guns and a silencer.

In October 2015, Hamzeh planned to travel to Jordan, enter the West Bank and conduct an attack on Israeli soldiers and citizens living in the West Bank.

Hamzeh later abandoned those plans and began to focus on conducting an attack in the United States.

During recorded conversations, Hamzeh explained that he wanted to commit a domestic act of violence on a Masonic Temple in Milwaukee.

Hamzeh had been under investigation since September 2015.

On January 19, Hamzeh took a guided tour of the Masonic temple, during which they learned meeting schedules and where people would be located during meetings.

Hamzeh learned meeting schedules and where people would be located during meetings. In a recorded conversation after they left, Hamzeh discussed his plans.

Hamzeh reaffirmed his intention to commit an armed attack on the temple and discussed in further detail how they would carry out the attack.

Do y’all remember last week when VB said someone on Twitter called her a “fake Babylonian” and I went off in search of more info and found this?

It kept niggling at my brain because Timothy had asked VB if it was some kind of white nationalist crap and that reminded me of something I’d read in the Blood and Politics book I’ve been (slowly) making my way through. Yep, sure enough it was in there. Timothy was right, it is indeed related to aspects of white nationalism/supremacy.

It apparently started out as something called British- or Anglo-Israelism, which is tied in with (justification for) British colonialism. Being that we’re a former colony of the Brits, the bad crazy was passed on.

TBH, I had trouble following all the twists & turns of their pretzel logic—it’s kinda like listening to Alex Jones—but in a nutshell it’s basically, “We white Christians are the Real Israelites™ (descendants of the10 lost tribes) who will get blessings from God, and the modern day Jews are actually fakes, who’re going to be punished for backsliding.”

I know many of the atheists among you consider all religions to be equally weird & nonsensical, but this stuff is wayyyyy out there…

The bill, sponsored by Republican Sen. Carroll Leavell of Jal, would appropriate $150,000 annually to support the authority while lawmakers hash out how to pay for the work that will be required to make the area safe again.

That could entail backfilling the cavern or inducing a controlled collapse and fixing whatever damage results to the nearby highways and the canal. The price tag could be anywhere from $25 million to $50 million, state officials told the committee.

Currently, the state is spending about $350,000 a year monitoring the cavern and tracking its movements.

Legislative finance analysts and state budget hawks have voiced concerns about creating another agency and spending more money. Some committee members also raised questions about condemnation of the property since it’s tied up in bankruptcy court and the liability the state would incur if it takes over the parcel.

The brine well first came to the state’s attention in 2008 after two other wells in remote locations collapsed and spurred a review of all brine well operations in New Mexico.

Produced by injecting water into underground salt formations, brine is used by the oil and gas industry for drilling operations.

Oh, the oil and gas industry. OK then.

I think it’s not the cost per se, they want to push as many cattle as they want onto the land parcel they are allotted to use. BLM/FS and the like restrict heads allowed to graze, which they think is unjustified.

TBH, I had trouble following all the twists & turns of their pretzel logic—it’s kinda like listening to Alex Jones—but in a nutshell it’s basically, “We white Christians are the Real IsraelitesTM (descendants of the10 lost tribes) who will get blessings from God, and the modern day Jews are actually fakes, who’re going to be punished for backsliding.”

I know many of the atheists among you consider all religions to be equally weird & nonsensical, but this stuff is wayyyyy out there…

What is it about white nationalists/supremacists that leads to such an obsession with ancient civilizations? It seems particularly strange since most ancient civilizations were definitely not what they would consider “white.” It is funny though, they always have strange language that will tip you off.

Yeah, it’s like they’re desperately seeking validation by stealing other people’s history. There are black groups that do it too, like the Black Hebrew Israelites who I used to see with some frequency in the streets of NYC. It’s those darned “lost 10 tribes”—everybody and their uncle claims to be descended from them: black Americans in the U.S., white Christians from the U.K., even Pashtuns from Afghanistan (hence their often fair skin, and light hair & eyes, or so some believe). God only knows who else claims to be the Real Jews™ Everyone except the people who currently call themselves Jews/Zionists.

I agree on the strange language. It’s often a telltale sign.

Always has been, by the look of it. This jumped out, too.

Donald was one of five children, the second son. As a child, he was so boisterous that his parents sent him away to military school. “That was the way it worked in the Trump family,” a longtime friend told me. “It was not a loving atmosphere.” Donald was chubby then, but military school slimmed him down. He became forceful, and grew even closer to his father. “I had to fight back all the time,” Trump once told me. “These guys like my father are tough. You have to be hitting back! Otherwise they don’t respect you!”

I’ll bet if someone started needling him bout his old man, he’d completely lose it.

Guess what Susie, if you can’t sustain your current ranching operations then you need to get out of the business.

love me,
a farmer (whose farm doesn’t rely on reduced fee/free stuff from the government).

Alternatively, we might take a look at exactly why it’s hard to make a living ranching (not that it ever was easy.) Large corporations have consolidated most of the feedlot and meat packing operations reducing the options for ranchers who now generally get to do the highest risk part of the supply chain (cow/calf, where you breed the cattle and raise the calves for a few months until they go off to the feedlot) while having few choices of where to sell their cattle.
Driving across Nevada you used to see steers being raised on grass. I haven’t seen that in a number of years. All cows and calves and a few bulls. Maybe the Hammonds need to get out of the business if they can’t compete, but I have some sympathy for them. Where do you go after 50 years of ranching?

Eh, seeking a sense of continuity with the better parts of the past is a pretty common thing. Pre-Columbian Mesoamericans did it all the time: the new group comes into power, and suddenly they turn out to have a lineage back to Teotihuacan and the Toltecs (who they mistake thought as the makers of that city). This could be especially glaring, like in the case of the Mexica…people who were explicitly from a far away place.

I wonder how much the rise of monotheism in the ancient world might have influenced racism or vice versa. My idea is basically that polytheistic societies would tend to be more accommodating to other beliefs because there’s always room in the pantheon for other gods - and then there’s the idea that Odin is just another name for Zeus which is another name of Jupiter. But when there’s only one true god, then everyone else is wrong and thus inferior. That’s probably too deep of a rabbit hole for me though…

I’m having a hard time working up sympathy for this. Pretty clearly the son learned from his father. It’s hard to make an argument that these are the sort of people who should be encouraged to keep ranching.

As for what they would retire on, at 70 social security is an option. Hopefully they did the intelligent thing and saved some money over the years. Given that all of my retirement planning has to be done with the assumption that I am unlikely to receive my full social security benefit, if any at all, I have a harder time coming up with sympathy there.

Actually, two guys from Texas on the ticket would be unconstitutional. That’s why Cheney had to change his residency to Wyoming in 2000.

Talking about racism in the past gets really complicated, because they’re weren’t using paradigms of race that matched with modern ones…though you can see bit of old racism(s) in modern racism, they’re not interchangeable.

As for polytheism…I can’t speak expertly about the past, but in the current day it sure doesn’t slow down racism. Hindu India can get very ugly with its assessment of “dark” Dravidians…it actually really chafed my one of my kin married a Kashimiri (very pale, very ethnic proud) and they didn’t realize that I grew up around South Indians, so they just let rip. And, in turn, Indians fully imported anti-black racism from England.

When Gandhi was a lawyer in Africa, his first attempts at better conditions for Indian workers was to apply British racists standards, arguing that Indians had to kept above black people. Now, he eventually and voluably rejected his initial concept, but it represents how deeply Indian colorism…which overlapped with class and regional prejudices…mapped onto de Gobineau-like black/white racism.

I was ~50 years old when the tobacco industry died. I and a few others in my area saw it coming and started diversifying before the rug got pulled out on us.
There are still a handful of tobacco farmers here (and they whine every year about how the tobacco companies are paying half as much or less than they used to), but those of us who made to transition to other farming operations are doing much better.

re: #254 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I’m having a hard time working up sympathy for this. Pretty clearly the son learned from his father. It’s hard to make an argument that these are the sort of people who should be encouraged to keep ranching.

As for what they would retire on, at 70 social security is an option. Hopefully they did the intelligent thing and saved some money over the years. Given that all of my retirement planning has to be done with the assumption that I am unlikely to receive my full social security benefit, if any at all, I have a harder time coming up with sympathy there.

There is much to agree with in this. The Hammonds are not warm, fuzzy poster children for being kind to ranchers, but I wouldn’t be surprised if most of their “retirement money” was sunk into their ranch. I’m not sure how easy it would be to sell, and the economy of their community and their chosen profession have slowly but inexorably changed over the decades.
From what I have read there is no question that the father and son have been bullies and big time jerks. They have also done good things for their community over the years. I tend to have sympathy for people who have worked hard and had the world change around them. Sometimes it can be fixed, but other times it is very hard, especially if one cannot predict the future.

274
Backwoods_Sleuth  Jan 26, 2016 • 3:40:21pm

re: #244 calochortus

Yes, but I’m not sure what they’d be retiring on. A lot of farming/ranching families want the kids to take over and then they can stay on, doing less, but still being useful.

If they treated their agriculture operations as a legit business, then they have Social Security coming in as well as any retirement investments they’ve been making.
I suspect folks like the Hammonds and Bundys aren’t in that category.

I don’t know nearly enough about the history of India or the Hindu faith to comment on those points, so I will defer to your knowledge and experience.

I was thinking more of the earlier western tradition, from what I recall, the Romans were fairly accommodating in allowing new gods into the pantheon (and basically assumed the Greek pantheon under different names). Conversely, once Christianity took hold over Europe, the difference between “pagans” and “barbarians/savages” seemed to erode quite a bit. Again, it’s too deep a rabbit hole for me to consider deeply in a comment thread, really just a random thought.

The noble White Man of Europe, when first appearing in the historical record, was noted to be living in sod mounds and fighting in the nude. Apparently this is romantic to racists everywhere.

You can actual find really interesting—in the way morbid folly constitutes “interesting”—attempts by European nations to formulate the possibility of “great” Northern European nations somewhere in the deep past. While the empire claimed descent from Rome, and via Rome to Greece…with modern archaeology, the picture forming of the past was lots of “brown” people having the first big cities, creating monuments, have the big ideas. A “white” civilization—Northern European, not Mediterranean, was something hoped for.

The French and British tried to refurbish the status of the Celts, while the Germans got heavy into the idea that there was some ur-Germanic people that were responsible for everything good. The occult groups that eventually fed into Himmler’s vision of the SS and the Annuerbe claimed to find archaeological remnants—and have visions—of the ancient rune-casting culture that spread across the world. That why they had anthropometrists running around Central Asia collecting skulls: they were seeking the Aryan diaspora remnants. Eventually, they just started faking discoveries…and had plans for bigger fakes, such as re-casting Egyptian archaeology in Aryan terms.

He was a fine actor and a real gentleman. He also had quite a sense of humor and went to some lengths to play along with the “alive or dead” joke, just as he promised he would do for as long as possible.

A typical example:

A Late Night with David Letterman skit showed Letterman trying to summon Vigoda’s ghost, but Vigoda walked in and declared, “I’m not dead yet, you pinhead!”

He also made frequent appearances on Late Night with Conan O’brien, just to announce that he wasn’t dead yet, including one during the final show.

At least the feds seem to be largely coming around to using actual environmental science. They weren’t alone in “maximizing” use of the land. IIRC, way back when the British government required Australian ranchers to have the same livestock densities on their land as the average English farm. Umm, had they ever actually, you know, looked at much of Australia? Did they note that the seasonal rainfall varied wildly? A lot of land was profoundly damaged in the process.

The Republican governor pledged to protect per-pupil K-12 school funding, Medicaid, social workers, prosecutors, state police and prison correctional officers; hire more public defenders; and fully fund last year’s Senate Bill 192, meant to curb the heroin addiction epidemic, as well as DNA testing of rape kits.

But most of the rest of state government — such as universities, parks, the arts, workplace safety, environmental quality and economic development — would face spending cuts of 4.5 percent this fiscal year, which ends June 30, and then 9 percent over each of the next two fiscal years. This comes on top of $1.6 billion sliced from state spending since 2008 by Bevin’s Democratic predecessor, Steve Beshear.

School teachers and state employees other than those in the protected categories should not count on a pay raise in the next two years, Bevin told reporters at a budget briefing Thursday afternoon.

I think that’s why conservatives hate colleges so much. Colleges often have kids thinking about perspectives that are foreign to the ones that wingnut parents teach. I think this was posted earlier, but it is good to roll it out again.

This was the FOX snark that Trump cited as his being treated unfairly by FOX (not just Kelly) and led to his deciding today to hold to “his word” and not enter the Thursday GOP debate.

We learned from a secret back channel that the Ayatollah and Putin both intend to treat Donald Trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president — a nefarious source tells us that Trump has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to those meetings.

Trump is playing the game that he is not anyone’s puppet. That is his whole schtick, not taking campaign donations, etc. He can’t be bought.

Today he basically said that the other candidates are wimps. They can’t be their own men (or woman, in one case).

It doesn’t matter that wingnuts are addicted to Fox as Trump has to get many more voters than are Fox watchers.

Polls already indicate that Trump’s strength is among the young and the old, the “moderate” Republicans, and of course the ethno-nationalists. Quite the coalition. Regardless, he has to show that no one can own him, and that include Roger Ailes.

Which is why in the press conference he explicitly called out Ailes by name, several times. Trump made it clear that he thinks Megyn Kelly is second rate, and that Ailes is childish (Trump used that word) for sending out that memo.

This goes back to the reports I linked a couple of weeks ago, about Ailes and Fox and Murdoch, about Ailes battling Murdoch’s children, etc. Trump knows these folk. Trump is playing this ultimate insider card - that he, not Roger Ailes, is Murdoch’s peer.

All good and well. We shall see. But Murdoch likes money and ratings more than anything…life itself.

Whatever happens…this will be great fun to watch from the sidelines.

By the way…this was put up a few minutes ago…

Washington Post - Fox News head lets Trump walk, keeps Megyn Kelly as debate moderator

Ailes told The Fix on Tuesday afternoon that if it came down to a choice between Trump or Kelly, he’d pick Kelly.

“Megyn Kelly is an excellent journalist, and the entire network stands behind her,” Ailes said in a statement. “She will absolutely be on the debate stage on Thursday night.”

So there.

And with that…later. I gotta get busy on some creative thinking for a new logo job.

re: #320 calochortus

At least the feds seem to be largely coming around to using actual environmental science. They weren’t alone in “maximizing” use of the land. IIRC, way back when the British government required Australian ranchers to have the same livestock densities on their land as the average English farm. Umm, had they ever actually, you know, looked at much of Australia? Did they note that the seasonal rainfall varied wildly? A lot of land was profoundly damaged in the process.

There’s also variation in *what* you have grazing on it. Cattle, buffalo, antelope, sheep, deer, etc. have different plant preferences and grazing methods. Sheep in particular are known for taking plants out down to ground level.

Desert and low-water areas are also known for developing a soil-fungal “crust” that helps hold in moisture and prevent erosion. Lots of herd animals treading on that can break it up with attendant additional issues.

re: #325 allegro

It isn’t the $8.99. It’s the $10 shipping on top.

My friend who makes and sells hot pepper products (jerky, hot sauce, etc.) has the same issue. Product goes for $5-7 a jar, but the shipping costs are excessive to produce much on-line sales.

Makes sense, it was done with little to no warning so the nutters couldn’t man the barricades, they (possibly) took the head nutter into custody, and the whole thing’s happening in the dead of night when the FBI will have the advantage.

They’ve got their info, they can be served arrest warrants later. Better to focus on the die hards

For the situation in Oregon I suspect 24-hour rule needs to go into effect.

Highway could have been blocked for a number of reasons; accident, militants set up a toll booth, FBI moved in, etc.

From there it’s going to be 90% rumors and hyperbole as different factions try to play different angles or grab the initial reaction and get their side going as the dominant opinion of what went down.

Caution, yes. This situation is fairly learnable, though. It should resolve to the background level of conspiracy mongering in a few hours.

Damn that was nasty. Thankfully she kept clear of the exposed rocks.

Seeing that gave me the creeps. All I could think of was ex-Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher on a family vacation in France and skiing into some rocks and then flipping and hitting his head (w/helmet) on a rock. Now with a permanently injured brain.

If they can get a net over the whole baboon troop, especially the alpha males, and do it without bloodshed, it could be a tremendous blow to the whole gun-humper conspiracy industry and its numerous deluded disciples.
