I know there’s some truth when you can’t afford to lose the money, but if you make the money, that’s different. And what about American companies that need access to Chinese workers?
We don’t manufacture as much as we used to, but the stuff we still make… we buy the parts overseas. And inventory systems are mostly a delicately balanced “just in time” set-up. If China were to halt all exports to the US for a couple of weeks, all our factories would close.
Or as someone suggested in a previous thread… sabotage i-phones and TV’s. They just have to flip a switch and they all suddenly explode. Or just stop working.

The next Congress will begin work immediately next year toward repealing President Barack Obama’s health care law but delay the changes as Republicans try to come up with an alternative, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Saturday.
The Kentucky Republican insisted that some 20 million Americans who have health care through the six-year-old law will not lose coverage, though the likely upheaval in the insurance industry suggests many could.
Asked about the Senate’s timetable to scrap the law, McConnell said: “We’re going to move to it after we go back in the first week in January.”
But during a speech in his hometown of Louisville, the senator cautioned patience from the law’s critics as Republicans create an alternative.
“You can’t just snap your fingers and go from where we are today to where we’re headed,” McConnell told a crowd at the Kentucky Farm Bureau’s annual meeting. “This has to be done carefully. It has to be done in a phased-in way over a period of time.”

Yeah, and if you look at his timeline, he fantasizes about not only killing possible undocumenteds, but also Muslims, African-Americans, and liberals in general. There are several directed threats of violence by him. That one got a fast block and report.
At this point, with Mr. Trump calling everyone and telling them contradictory things, those nations would almost be remiss in their own duties to not test either our military or diplomatic resolve (or competence).
Argentina: Mr. Trump, you want those hotel permits in Buenos Aires? Just ignore what we plan to do the next couple weeks in the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. (One reason why you don’t put a businessman in government.)
Russia: When my wife and I were in Poland last year, Russia put in all sorts of troops in the Kalningrad Exclave, missiles, aircraft, &c. We were thirty miles from the border and were quite concerned (as were everyone who lived in NE Poland while we were there). We spent a lot of time watching the local news trying to figure out what Russia was up to. The US response then was to sail a couple US Navy warships into the area to flag-wave and remind the Polish government the USA had their backs. Would a Trump Administration do the same?
Moreover, Russia has been eyeing the Baltic States for some time. Poland and the Baltics are all part of NATO and Mr. Trump has signalled he might ignore or abandon the Atlantic Alliance. Diplomatic or military probes against all those nations would test his commitment to NATO.
China: Well, after that disaster of a phone call to President Tsai yesterday, China is rightly pissed. While Taiwan has an excellent military, it is no match for China, a world power. Increased military traffic in the Taiwan Strait or perhaps the East and South China Seas would not be unreasonable probes. Would the USA come to Taiwan’s defence under military pressure? Sail an aircraft carrier in the Strait perhaps? Who knows?
And the India-Pakistan debacle: Mr. Trump, you want those permits for your hotel in India? Ignore what we’re going to do in Kashmir for the next few weeks (if he can even find Kashmir on a map).

I have been crying over what happened in Oakland last night. It hits me so hard because not only did I grow up going to raves at abandoned warehouses like this, but I still attend these close-knit events as a refuge from mainstream society where everyone is welcome, where the ethos that helped Chicago establish itself as the birthplace of house music continues to reign supreme. Where women can dance the night away without being surrounded by perverted creeps.
I just don’t know how else to express my horror and sadness over what unfolded there. It could have clearly happened here and I can’t fathom the fiery deaths the patrons had to endure because of dodgy promoters who always put safety third instead of it being the first and foremost importance of element there.
Fuck me, up to 40 dead. Should never have happened. RIP to all of the victims whose only crime was to dance the night away before being engulfed in flames. Fucking terrible.

The Snopes article includes cartograms which weight each county by population. (If you squint really closely you can see mine on the map.)
They also include a cartogram of the vote in each county by percentage of the votes for Mrs. Clinton or Mr. Trump, which shows that even in counties that went for Mr. Trump, significant percentages of their populaces voted for Mrs. Clinton. (Those are weighted with shades of purple, more blue leaning more toward Mrs. Clinton.)
One of the arguments I’ve heard is that cities like New York or Los Angeles should not have an “outsized say” over the whole country (which is bunk). As far as I’m concerned, the 9,800,000 people in Los Angeles County’s votes should be exactly equal to the 5,000 people in my county in weight.
That takes us though to the game we wish we had (popular vote) to the game we do have (electoral college). You have to play with the election rules you have, not the election rules you wish you had (unless you can get them changed). With the reality of a Constitutional amendment to abolish the Electoral College a dead letter (no way small states are going to give up their two extra electoral votes each), we’re stuck with trying something like the National Popular Vote Compact (and that might not get through enough small state legislatures either).

What I love is the people who create the crap about coastal elites are actual coastal elites themselves. All these conservative writers who love to talk about how the “Heartland” is real America don’t live anywhere near it. Honestly, i don’t care that Trump’s won more counties than Clinton. That’s like saying Alaska has a bigger GDP than say Illinois because of its land size. Land size is impressive but only in terms of geography, in terms of politics it’s frankly irrelevant. So yeah liberal/Democratic voters reside in more densely populated areas. That doesn’t change that 2.5 million more votes were given to Clinton than Trump.
America still thinks of itself as a country composed of small towns and farms, even though in terms of where people live, it’s really a country of cities and suburbs.

The counties Clinton and Obama have won resemble the population as a whole more than the counties McCain, Romney, and Trump have won though and I personally think that is more relevant. It’s the same thing with Congressional districts.

We’ve honestly been the latter for a few generations now. I guess it goes back to Jefferson’s idealized vision of Agrarian America. I admire Jefferson’s political philosophy but we don’t live in Thomas Jefferson’s America, we live in Alexander Hamilton’s.

I largely agree.
The way I think of it is that America IS who Americans ARE. That’s the whole essence of self-governance, that we Americans of each era define what America is. 220 years ago, it was an agrarian republic designed primarily to benefit white male landowners. Now, it’s a diverse, largely metropolitan nation that increasingly benefits all, but still does tend to benefit wealthy white males most.
This is one reason why I am left unimpressed by appeals to ‘What The Founders Wanted’, because I kind of figure they wanted us to figure it out for ourselves, rather than taking their second draft of a founding document as Gospel. The other reason is that a whole lot of them thought it was perfectly just that they should own other people, buy and sell them like cattle, steal their labor, rape, beat, and even kill them at will, limited mostly by the prospect of monetary loss. That alone means for me, they can never be the almost godlike figures that others seem to see them as.

Hear hear. The striving for “a more perfect Union” is the part the framers of the Constitution (at least in my not-well educated opinion) is the single most important line in the whole Constitution.
Slavery was undoubtedly bad, and we got rid of it to the benefit of all (not just the slaves). Women gaining the right to vote empowered half the populace that was largely ignored by government, &c &c.
Each of those advances were what the founders of the nation envisioned, though they could not envision the specific acts at the time, carried forward the vision of the founders:
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

I am a real American living in the rural part of the country (until Steve King gets his Nuremberg Laws), just as much as an actor living in Hollywood or a financier in Manhattan.
The nation recognises my rights as equal to those of the President. They are the same as the CEO of Bank of America, as the governor of my state, or the rancher down the street from me.

I was born in Fairfax. Live in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. For this woman, who I imagine had probably never even to my state before to talk about how glad she was to be in “Real Virginia”, man it just pissed me off. That’s what I mean when I say I think some small towners and rural residents have a certain snobbery towards urbanites and I’m a small town resident myself but most of my education and employment has been in the suburbs and urban areas. These people want to call Obama and Democrats divisive? No, they’re the divisive ones. They’re the ones that literally tell theri supporters they’re the only representatives of real America.
Of course, Sarah Palin has become one of the elites she professes to hate since she quit on her state to become a right wing folk hero. Her buddies are people like Hannity and Greta not the regular schmos of Wasalia.
