The FBI and 5 Other Agencies Are Investigating Russia’s Efforts to Help Donald Trump Gain Power

US News • Views: 48,822

McClatchy reports today that there’s an active investigation under way into Russian attempts to skew the presidential election toward Donald Trump.

The FBI and five other law enforcement and intelligence agencies have collaborated for months in an investigation into Russian attempts to influence the November election, including whether money from the Kremlin covertly aided President-elect Donald Trump, two people familiar with the matter said.

The agencies involved in the inquiry are the FBI, the CIA, the National Security Agency, the Justice Department, the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network and representatives of the director of national intelligence, the sources said.

Investigators are examining how money may have moved from the Kremlin to covertly help Trump win, the two sources said. One of the allegations involves whether a system for routinely paying thousands of Russian-American pensioners may have been used to pay some email hackers in the United States or to supply money to intermediaries who would then pay the hackers, the two sources said.

Note that the allegation of funneling money through Russian-American pensioners was part of the Trump “golden showers” dossier — so the FBI and other agencies obviously put enough credence in that dossier to investigate it.

Wat I really want investigated is whether Comey was in contact with anyone from the Trump Campaign or Russia when he decided to unleash his October Surprise on Clinton.

My own personal theory, FWIW:

Trump visited Russia a number of times since the fall of the USSR, hoping to do yooge, terrific, classy deals.

Being the scammer that he is, he attempted to do yooge, terrific, classy scams on Russian investors who were connected to the mob.

Trump gets in deep over his head with the Russian mob. They are not pleased.

Putin tells his homeys “I got this, brothers” & pulls Trumps ass out of the fire, but he owns Trump for life.

Is there anything wrong with this theory? Just throwing stuff out there.

Investigations by American agencies to cease that day.

Investigations by British, French, German, Israeli, Scandanavian, Canadian, Chinese, etc agencies to continue. And those results will be published.

I think it’s more likely that Comey was with the Republicans in general, as opposed to the Trump campaign. I keep hearing stories about how the New York FBI kept trying to find something on Clinton to bring her down, and Comey- rather than doing his fucking job- wanted to get on their good sides.

The big thing for me about this story is the lack of attention it’s getting in the press. From the moment an investigation was announced into Hillary’s emails, the press went fucking wild and the assumption was that there was “something” there if the DOJ was launching an investigation. Hell, the media gave her shit for calling it a security review, insisting on calling it a criminal investigation in order to maintain the perception that she had committed a crime and the DOJ was deciding whether or not to prosecute her for it. Even when Comey gave his long editorial about how horrible she was but she hadn’t committed a crime, the press acted as if she’d just gotten away with murder.

But now you have multiple agencies including the FBI looking into allegations alone and…nothing. The media’s slow-walking it as if they know that the kibosh will be put on it any day now and people will have forgotten about it in six months.

I guess my problem with it is that Lil Donnie doesn’t do gratitude, and blows up at threats. If someone tries to threaten him now, he’s got Secret Service protection. If they try to collect on a debt, good fucking luck. If they try to blackmail him, I don’t think anybody knows quite what he’ll do, but him quietly doing the reasonable thing seems a bad bet.

My guess is that he’s had a bunch of shady deals with the Russians, but he likes Putin because he’s a shirtless bear-riding guy that don’t take no shit and has huge classy houses with gold crap all over them, and he’s been whispering sweet nothings in the yam’s ear. Nothing deeper.

However, I don’t think this is going to go well, and I’m worried that it can get seriously bad. Both of these upstanding leaders are thin-skinned narcissistic bullies, which is not a good start to the relationship. Trump’s already tried to DO A DEAL: the US will drop sanctions in exchange for reductions in Russian nukes. Kremlin says go fuck yerself, they want sanctions lifted for free. No deal.

Russia has little that the West actually wants, and won’t give up anything the West would want anyways. Guess they expect their little poodle to jump when they say jump, and even Captain Stupid is going to figure that out pretty fast.

Hm. Here in LA, if you talk to the old retired Russians who congregate in Plummer Park near “Little Moscow” in WeHo, they *do* talk proudly about how easy it is to fake up multiple identities to collect pensions for people who either don’t exist, or who have died.

Dunno if they use these ill-gotten gains to fund haxx0rz here in the U.S. Could happen, I guess. However, the Russian Mafia is deeply, deeply involved in these types of scams. Typically, they take the lion’s share of the pension monies, and give the stooge who is acting as a cut-out a percentage in the 25-35% range.

Basically, because the cut-outs have to pay taxes on the pension money, and they want to give them enough to do so to prevent the whole scam from being blown.

Oh look…you’re back for some more dodging and bending.

I know you won’t buy it because it is just not like you to be honest and realistic, but yes the Russians affected the casting of ballots which then affected the counting.

Here is how it worked. They put out deceptive stories the people bought such as Hillary was sick and not healthy enough for the office. They got the DNC emails to paint Hillary and the DNC as crooked and not running a legit campaign.

Stuff like that caused enough people to cast ballots for Trump. Once the ballots were counted Trump pulled off a victory that was extremely close in three states that really counted and could have turned the vote for Hillary.

I am sure you have a grasp of how stupid people fall for things like this.

PROOFS that the Russians tampered with voting machines and scanners instead of merely mindfucking the voters.

That distinction is important, because it’s the fallback dodge that Trump uses every time to deflect questioning. He states that the Russians did not affect the election (meaning they don’t have any evidence of vote tampering,) while ignoring the very overt and obious negative propaganda war against Hillary’s ticket.

BUT how many votes did Hillary lose because of the new Jim Crow state voting laws and the removal of polling places, and cutbacks in early voting? Might the depressed turnout for her reflect those Republican outrages and lead to her “loss” .

Ya know, there’s a base rate issue where it ain’t fuckin’ roses if a foreign intelligence agency is merely messing with private individuals and organizations inside our nation via disinformation campaigns.

And the fact it’s not dicking with the votes themselves does not change the apparent targeting a specific political party by a foreign intelligence service.

Separate matter…all the little hints that the Trump campaign coordinated with Wikileaks—such as Roger Stone’s boasting—are their own can of worms, even if Wikileaks wasn’t compromised.

Stuff like that caused enough people to cast ballots for Trump. Once the ballots were counted Trump pulled off a victory that was extremely close in three states that really counted and could have turned the vote for Hillary.

I am sure you have a grasp of how stupid people fall for things like this.

Ballots for Trump, or in the case of at least one acquaintance of mine, a vote for Johnson instead of Clinton — in Wisconsin, where it actually mattered.

Goes to the fact that hacking/phishing is a “white collar” crime, and it tougher to investigate, prosecute, etc., as compared to the garden variety burglary, which is a physical crime. And the media has done its best to make hacking/phishing out to be something less serious than a national security threat when it is directed at a political party/candidates with the intent to manipulate the election outcome with leaks of selective materials, materials stripped of context or otherwise manipulated, and otherwise lying about the contents of said materials.

re: #98 makeitstop

And she can’t even make the case she wants to make about Obamacare being awful:

When Obamacare first came into effect, I was excited to get what I thought would be financial help with my costly medicine and treatments. But when I signed up, my premium came back at an astronomical price, more than my monthly mortgage payment. This happened because I had to declare my husband’s salary as part of our household income, which put me in an earning bracket too high to qualify for any financial assistance. My husband works for a small business, and while he gets paid fairly, his company does not offer spousal insurance. I’m left with a premium of $893, so high that I can no longer afford the cost of my medicines and treatments on top of the monthly premiums. I wish I could opt out completely, but the penalty for not signing up is much too great.

In the end, I voted for Trump because he promised to repeal and replace Obamacare, and that was the most important issue to my own life. Looking back, I realize what a mistake it was. I ignored the pundits who repeated over and over again that he would not follow through on his promises, thinking they were spewing hysterics for better ratings. Sitting on my couch, my mouth agape at the words coming out his mouth on the TV before me, I realized just how wrong I was.

Her disease is a preexisting condition. She would not be able to get coverage, or would be paying even more for that limited coverage, without Obamacare. And since she lives in Texas, the state refused to expand Medicaid, which meant that if her income were below the threshold, she’d have qualified for that instead of needing the marketplace.

And her husband’s insurance is limited (because of course it is) so it can’t have a spouse on it.

Note that the allegation of funneling money through Russian-American pensioners was part of the Trump “golden showers” dossier — so the FBI and other agencies obviously put enough credence in that dossier to investigate it.

It’s come to light that the NYC FBI office was anti-Clinton to the point of questioning those agents’ sanity. They really, really hated her.

Also, Comey is a Whitewater veteran. That whole “investigation’s” sole purpose was to basically to throw Bill and Hillary Clinton in jail, at all costs. It’s really hard to believe that Comey’s October surprise involving the bullshit re-opening of OMG-EMAILZ-gate had nothing to do with that.

You’d have to be out of your fucking mind to trust the FBI to investigate the Russian electoral interference honestly at this point. Maybe if they bypass the NYC office and maybe if Comey is kept out of the loop, you might get to the truth.

On top of that, though, there’s nothing to stop Trump from getting rid of Comey and hiring someone even more in the bag for Trump.

Jesus Christ, in two days, this country governmentally turns into Russia; a nation run by a party that wants to keep a facist strong man in power at all costs. I will refuse to my dying day to ever forgive anyone who voted for this unqualified monster and to address him as “President”.

There is a reason why we did not try to replicate our constitution in Japan or Germany after WW2.

It really doesn’t work that well unless all parties adhere to ethical norms.

That’s the “one weird trick” that the GOP discovered.

I can’t find happiness in them getting burned, because for them to get burned means others, who don’t deserve it, get burned. If only stupid would only hurt stupid. One wingnut I know is already posting about the GOP trying to gut the ACA. The same dolt who once told me he” Couldn’t do anything about Obama.” And voted for Trump. I can’t even go back at him. I’ve murder in my heart. Pure contempt.

It’s more happiness in Trump proving to them exactly what we said he was.

re: #33 ericblair

Trump would not be embarrassed by any sex tape, but one thing HE DOES NOT ALLOW is anyone saying he has less money than he claims he does. For Putin to reveal that Trump owes him hundreds of millions BIGLY and that Putin has owned him for years is something I think Trump would do anything rather than have revealed. Also too: it’s not as easy for Trump to blow off Putin and the Russian mob the way he blows off other people he owes money to.

Well that is done for another year. I had jury duty today. Philly has a one day/one trial system. This is the first time I was told to say nothing about what went on in the court room or anywhere else. Sheesh. At least we got paid and I will not have to do this until next year.

Not to be morbid, but imagine if George HW Bush passed away on inauguration day itself. Trump would be outraged at being “upstaged”…

I certainly wish no harm to befall President Bush.

I just got back from town. Signing all the bank paperwork for my new position on the village board was more complicated than my Navy enlistment contract.

“Sign here … and here … and this form says you won’t use government funds for on-line gambling… .”

(I’m guessing they have that because someone did it before … I got a raised eyebrow from the bank president when I asked about off-track betting though.)

Got home from the bank, and Yay! Homeowner’s insurance cheque was in the mailbox. (I should have checked on that before I went to the bank.) That was quick.

What he said mirrors my own thoughts. From the fact that Manning was not pardoned; she had her sentence commuted on to the point that the length of the sentence was out of sync with other similar cases or even those of actual traitors, and that ultimately it was up to the President to reduce the length based on all the factors involved. Jim wouldn’t have reduced the length. I probably wouldn’t have either.

But I can’t fault the President for doing it.

re: #246 EPR-radar

People who voted for Trump need to be ridiculed and verbally beaten around the head and shoulders with a stout stick.

The reason for this is that Trump is not an exceptionally able swindler. In fact his lies and evasions are pathetically obvious to anyone who is not desperate to believe in lies.

Trump voters are the idiots who fell for Trump’s pathetic lies, and unless they get a fucking clue they will just vote like idiots again for the next demagogue to come along.

Yeah the voters are bad. But what still amazes me about Trump are all the stories about him bilking his suppliers on his building projects. A good example…the people fighting over 4 some million bucks on the new hotel at the former DC Post Office building.

These are professional business people that have direct dealings with Trump. Voters have a distant relationship and we already know how fleeting their minds are. But businesses enter into actual contracts with Trump…and yet, they too fall for the bullshit and end up getting ripped off and shorted on payments.

And they should know because he has been doing that for years. It is well known. But does that stop them from dealing with Trump. No.

How the hell does that happen? Answer that and you know why so many voters fell for him.

It is pure ignorance based on either being lazy and not looking into his dealings…or a complete arrogance knowing he rips people off and yet they enter into deals with him thinking it isn’t going to happen to them.

And the voters showed that same blind ignorance and arrogance thinking he was going to do something for them, he wouldn’t screw over me, no one would do that as the president. He is going to make America Great…he said so.

I just don’t fucking get it. All I know is it does not make me impressed with a whole hell of a lot of people. And it tells me America has a problem with critical thinking…all the way from the lowly wingnut hater to business people to the halls of the U.S. Congress.

I for one can’t wait for the stupid Trumpers to get angry when they don’t get their pony. They deserve the misery they chose to inflict on themselves.

Until they fall for the propaganda from Breitbart, SMOTI, Alex Jones, Rush, Lumpy, Fix and the RWNJ claptrap cartel that it’s all the fault of anyone who isn’t an angry, straight, male WASP… and those need to be “dealt with.”
