Warren Harding knew his close. He died before the Ohio Gang Scandal of political cronyism run amok blew up. (I actually saw the history of that scandal while visiting Washington Court House back on the 2012 Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure; and it was even more messed up than you might even think.)
This level of outright cronyism, attempted suppression and political privileges seen on display right now would make Harding blush.

Assumes facts not in evidence - that the GOP cares whether the EPA functions or not. The Administration and the GOP are intent on breaking government as a function (and breaking a functioning federal government).
re: #27 Belafon

Dry Erase. Changes so fast…
This is turning more Dystopian far faster than I ever believed.
To be sure, the rush to claim internment camps and freight cars always tends to seem hyperbolic, but at the rate this administration is removing Truth from and and all official communications, ceasing normal public information access, dictating business decisions via pure edict, and in press conferences constantly produce completely outlandish statements with no evidence and then a scamper away from answering the question.
This is the first stage of a dystopia, then next is securing personal and ideological battlements around the White House to cripple Congress in order to complete a takeover of the democracy. Already Republicans have remained completely silent and seem to be fine with the loss of democracy in favor of raw corporate greed currying favor with Trump.
“You see, Mister President - that has such a nice ring to it, doesn’t it - that only legitimate votes are used when computing the Electoral College count. So, obviously, these must have been illegal votes.”

They might not care about the EPA in principle, but when the river next to their district turns bright yellow, they’ll care. And when this ends up being applied to other agencies, like say the VA or the Social Security Administration, everyone gets a subpoena.

No, they’ll blame the gutted EPA for not doing enough - or the state DEP for not doing enough - and because they’ve been shown to be incapable of doing the job, they’ll cut funding further. Just watch.
See how the GOP (and a media that didn’t bother to trace back the source) claimed that the river contamination caused last year when an EPA worker accidentally breached a dike in CO put all the blame on the EPA. Nowhere was the company that dumped the waste in the first place blamed by the GOP. The EPA was trying to deal with contamination caused by a mining company that didn’t care about cleaning up after itself.

re: #41 The Vicious Babushka
The legal argument for abortion becoming a state issue at this point is incredibly dubious. And can be incredibly far reaching.
Would the Court continue to recognize the general constitutional right to privacy but simply hold that the right to an abortion (a medical procedure) is not covered by the right to privacy? And if this one particular medical procedure isn’t covered, are there other medical procedures that aren’t covered?
If the Court strikes down the constitutional right to privacy, how many other cases (and rights we take for granted) become suspect?
The most common argument being made by pro-lifers is that life begins at conception and thus equal protection and due process should apply to the unborn. If that’s the decision the Court reaches, there’s no way for it to be legal in some places and illegal in others. And that’s before we get into the hundreds of moral questions attached to such a ruling.
For all of you with Democratic Congresspeople: call them and tell them to sponsor a bill forcing agencies that aren’t dealing with classified information to release that information to the public as they did before.

#Anything‘spossible, Sean Spicer secretly loves Dippin’ Dots
I’m just going to repost this terrifyingly prescient 2012 comment from Shiplord Kirel, which is quite possibly the best description ever for what we’re seeing from Spicer/Conway/etc:
Many years ago, I read an article about a missionary who went to New Guinea to work with some barely contacted tribes. The culture of one of these tribes was such that they openly admired lying and treachery. When the preacher told them the story of Judas’s betrayal, for example, they responded with a low whistle of admiration.
I don’t know whether this missionary’s tale was true, but it rather reminds me of the Lubbock Republicans: They are, themselves, pathological liars. They have little regard for education and knowledge because they can simply invent whatever “facts” they require, rather than working hard to acquire them. They apparently think this is a good thing, a sign of power and status. The only reason they dislike being called liars is the implication that they aren’t getting away with it. If you call them out, you haven’t impugned their honesty, you have impugned their skill and power. It therefore does no good to prove to them that Mitt is lying, they actually admire him for it.

One of my students has glommed onto it. I showed her a vid clip of Alex Jones having one of his meltdowns, and I said, “You wanna know who votes for Trump? There you go.” She concluded that what we’re seeing among RWNJ’s is essentially a type of mass hysteria, something akin to a “mental virus” (as she put it) that seizes control of the mind.

Which is why throwing the White House Press Corps out of the White House might not be such a bad idea in the long run. They might have to do some investigating rather than hanging around seeing what Spicer and friends have to say, and maintaining access at all costs.

I remember Romania in particular. Nikolae Ceausescu sang the Internationale while he and his wife Elena waited to be shot. Madame Ceausescu’s final words to the firing squad were reportedly, “Boys, I was like a mother to you!”
Unimpressed with either performance, the soldiers shot them anyway. There were reportedly hundreds of volunteers for the firing squad.
As perverse as it is, I’d think there should be some newspapers salivating at the prospects of a new Deep Throat, Pentagon Papers, etc. A smart paper would try to get out in front of this ASAP before the number of serious crimes or horrific policies revealed through anonymous leakers starts numbing the public.
My parents have both started paying attention more. Proud of them.

So was Hoxha in Albania. But yeah I’m familiar with the Prague Spring aftermath. I really should ask my cousins who I’ve made contact with that still live or lived in Slovakia during the Cold War what that was like. Unfortunately none of those are left that were alive in WWII. Ceausescu was praised in the west for his relative independence from the Soviet line. Among other things, Romania was the only communist country that did not break off relations with Chile after the Pinochet coup and in fact had a fairly cordial and mutually profitable relationship with that gang.

Absent TPP, there’s a chance that trade with China will be drastically altered by the ratification of RCEP. RCEP covers most of the Pacific Rim, plus India—30% of the world economy—and its terms basically make China the big wheel in the region’s market, and the regions legal disputations.
RCEP has been in the works for awhile, but was not as solid as the TPP—the two weren’t in direction competition, either. But now that there’s zero TPP, RCEP is the new standard that all of South, SE, and East Asia, plus Australasia, is inclining towards.
That’s 30% of the world economy wrapped together with lowered tariffs, but with no rules about environmental regulation or safety regulation of industry, nor any guarantees regard labor rights (all of which the TPP had to some degree)…and America is currently 100% on the outside. Can the current admin actually assemble a deal (note: these multi-state trade negotiations generally take several years) that’s advantageous to us?
So your farmers have a lot to be worried about.

Unfortunately, I can see it working in the former DDR - that seems to be the hotbed of the German alt-right, and especially the area around Dresden. I don’t know about the former West Germany.

Ceausescu refused to participate in the ‘68 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia; he got some cred from the West as result - here too, to be fair. A lot of Czechs still recall that at least on that matter, he was on the right side of history.
That was one of the things he referred to during his last public speech before the crowd started shouting him down.
re: #247 HappyWarrior
Yeah I know she couldn’t stop it but a vote against would still have been nice. I won’t hold it against her since there are more important battles but her reasoning is something I disagree with.
Important battles?
All these battles are important. There isn’t some fallback where all of sudden the vote suddenly matters.
Carson is stunningly unprepared and unqualified for the position. If not now, when?!
Tillerson and all the rest are likewise unprepared, unqualified, have conflicts/ethics issues, and they’re getting rubber stamped by the GOP. There’s no reason to rubber stamp your approval on them either.
Unqualified is unqualified no matter how much or how fast the GOP rubber stamps them.
The GOP spent years obstructing Obama’s nominees for the federal bench and Garland; they didn’t stop. Now, they get to fill all those positions and the Democrats have no options? Time to figure out where the line is drawn, because the GOP is busy rewriting history as I type.
Okay, everybody who thought a week ago we would be in a multi-day pissing contest about obvious lies about the size of the inauguration crowd, and have the new meme “alternate facts” straight from the shitgibbon’s spokesmonster, please raise your hands.
That’s what I thought.

What the fuck is wrong with Congressional Democrats? Party lines votes against Trump’s cabinet of horrors would seem to be no-brainers, and this isn’t happening?!?!??
This shit is not difficult. For example, each Congressional Democrat could put out a single statement saying “I will be pleased to cooperate with the Trump Administration on anything that is truly in the general interest of the American people, and I’ll vote no on everything else.”
Then vote no on everything and explain why.
If a miracle happens and the Republicans come up with something worth voting for, vote yes and explain why.

Hearing the reasoning would be interesting, but the fact remains that it is unacceptable for Congressional Democrats to give the Republicans bipartisan cover for anything more substantive than naming post offices.
We are in for a shit show of unprecedented magnitude, and the most important thing of all will be placing the blame for that shit show directly on Trump and the Republicans. Congressional Democrats voting for any of this Trump shit is seriously counter-productive here.

I wouldn’t get too excited, since Labour under Corbyn is ready to roll over and let May pull the trigger. He’s far left, always been a Eurosceptic, and even though Labour policy is pro-Remain he’s going to order Labour MPs to vote for Leave. The third party, the LibDems, is balls-to-the-wall Remain.

Of course, it’s not fair that Nazis should have to change anything about their behavior or beliefs just to avoid being punched in the face, but if I knew a Nazi personally, I would hope they would heed this advice. You wouldn’t leave an expensive watch sitting on your driver’s seat and abandon your car, unlocked, on a dark street, would you? And then come up shocked to find the watch gone and your car vandalized? I mean, you can’t go around doing, saying, and believing racist things—like quoting Nazi propaganda and Hitler himself—and then express surprise when someone clocks you in the gourd for it. Not that there is anything inherently unconscionable with doing, saying, and believing racist things!

Don’t be fooled- Bannon in s the guy in charge. Trump thinks he is but Bannon knows how to ride him like a champ. Simply play into Trump’s ego and make any idea you want planted seem to come from Trump himself. Bannon’s vision is not for the simple dismemberment of the US Federal Government. It is for the total and complete makeover of the entire world to fit the right-wing nihilist ideology.
No effective government. LIterally every man for himself. Private security instead of public police forces. No public roads or schools. I don’t drink but those three tweets make me want to reach for a jug of absinthe.

Not sure why Williamson isn’t falling for it. Him and NRO have never met an opportunity to smear black people they haven’t liked.
re: #358 Myron Falwell
It’s really hard sometimes when you realize that you were lied to all along. Some stuff will take longer to forgive myself for than others, and that goes with the territory.
My conversion was in the first term of W Bush. I was never a true believer in the Republican cause, I just found reasons to vote Republican more often than not by picking and choosing what to believe.

Thank you. I deeply appreciate the kind words. 🙂

It wouldn’t surprise me if Williamson finds a way to have these doubts of his assuaged by some other bit of propaganda.

Of course and as you know our host was once right leaning too. It’s not about when you became progressive or whatever, it’s that we’re on the same page now. As I said, I’m a life long liberal but I hated Clinton being attacked for having been a Goldwater supporter in HS. It was just wasn’t fair.

Probably. Man I loathe him and NRO.

Me too. They are more responsible than most for the rise of Trump, but still like to pretend that their form of conservatism is more civilized than Trump/Bannon shit.
It isn’t.

That’s why I may loathe them more. Trump and Bannon know what they are. They’re boors. NRO likes to present itself as civilized, intellectual, and responsible when it’s neither of those things. I admit, I got a nasty taste in my mouth from NRO because of having to see their articles posted here too often as a “Reasonable conservative” take.
And the excuses for WFB’s steadfast defense of Jim Crow, Apartheid, and Latin American dictatorships grew thin with me fast.

It was in reading Charles’ public repudiation of the right that has given me courage seven years later.

That’s awesome.

Just emailed my contacts at the national battlefield, since I am the unit coordinator for the re-enactment coming up. How the hell are we supposed to put on a re-enactment when the national park service cannot communicate with the pubic and with the units coming to participate.

She had a genuine change of heart in high school, but some people with rigid ideological views will doubt the loyalty of anyone who’s ever been anything other than a full-throated leftie. I’ve found that people (like many here at LGF) who, like Clinton, had a change of heart at some point in their lives, are among the most loyal and passionate. That’s why I try to embrace former Republicans or Republicans who have lost faith in their party.

Absolutely. And I have to say, the GOP faithful never held it against Reagan for having been a Dem.

Sounds like the UK in the lead up to Brexit.
I was not in the UK leading up to Brexit. I suspect the populists are going to gain, but not necessarily gain power.
re: #296 ericblair
I’m a Yank living in Europe. Don’t worry about self-identifying as American, because people here much more than in America understand assholes like Trump, and understand a good citizenry with a shit government. The protests got a LOT of media coverage.
Funnily enough, Europeans seem a lot more optimistic about Americans than Americans themselves are: they figure we’ll learn our lesson, we’re good at change, and we’ll bounce back.
There was a Women’s March right here in Frankfurt. Germans who know me know what i think of Trump, and in general, what good Patriotic Trump Supporter would be living as an expat in the first place?
re: #298 Kragar
Nazis, it’s time for a common-sense approach to not getting punched in the face:
yeah, it’s bad enough when they dress provocatively and then drink excessively and hang out at places they know aren’t safe…as if they were, well, asking for it.

re: #316 lawhawk
And the GOP/regime’s endless stream of BS is designed to wear down the opposition too. It’s like facing a Mississippi River flood of BS and you’ve got only a bucket to push back.
Exactly. Again, you cannot argue with them, and it is wrong to punch them…things are going to get a lot worse for a lot of people who do not deserve it (and even many who do).
re: #326 Shiplord Kirel
HHS workers, too, have been told to cease communications with members of Congress, press
Trump should just have the whole government sign an NDA
re: #329 Arkansawyer
The Pacific was good, but I felt like it couldn’t live up to BoB.
Hard one to match. Pacific had its moments, though. The British are planning their own BoB thing with Pegasus Bridge about the glider-borne troops who seized and held the Orne River bridge.
re: #260 Interesting Times
Er…all the more reason to vote against it as symbolic protest, if nothing else? What possible advantage could voting in favor have? She’s up for re-election in 2018, midterms are low-turnout/base elections by nature, so…do something that only serves to piss off your own base??
I’m equally disappointed in Sherrod Brown, and actually, all the Dems on that committee. They need to make the Republicans OWN these idiot appointees.
The only rationale I could accept would be if the goopers said—if you don’t go with Carson, here’s who we’re going to pick and it was somebody worse. Although, even that wouldn’t wash—the Dems can’t stop anything anyway, but they should not be complicit in these horrible decisions.
re: #272 Big Beautiful Door
Well it gave her an opportunity to state what she expects from Carson, so when he fails she can hold him accountable.
Ooh—will she write him a sternly worded letter?
