Aimee Mann With Jonathan Coulton: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Bob Boilen | May 8, 2017 — “This song is called ‘You Never Loved Me’ — it’s another cheery, optimistic number,” says Aimee Mann, introducing the second of four songs in this Tiny Desk Concert. She has been writing songs on the human condition — more often than not with a strong sense of humor to underpin the inevitable melancholy — as far back as the ’80s, when she was the singer and bassist in Boston’s The Young Snakes. Mann’s newest solo record, the first in five years, is baldly called Mental Illness — clearly, there’s a deep honesty within these songs. (Also: This is Aimee Mann’s Tiny return, so if you’re loving this, take a look at her performance with Ted Leo in their duo called The Both.)

Mental Illness is available now:
iTunes: itunes.apple.com
Amazon: amazon.com

Set List
“Rollercoasters”
“You Never Loved Me”
“Goose Snow Cone”
“Patient Zero”

Musicians
Aimee Mann (vocals, guitar); Jonathan Coulton (guitar, vocals); Paul Bryan (bass, vocals); Jamie Edwards (piano, vocals)

Credits
Producers: Bob Boilen, Niki Walker; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Niki Walker, Morgan Noelle Smith, Bronson Arcuri; Production Assistant: A Noah Harrison; Photo: Marian Carrasquero/NPR.

Thank you for the music video, Mr. Johnson. I am amazed at how you continue to find interesting and talented performers to entertain those of us with limited exposure to such music (and for those who are very exposed - wait, that doesn’t sound right… .)

Perhaps this is the secret information Sergey Kislyak and Donald Trump exchanged: Mr. Kislyak was actually giving intelligence to the US government on the growing international bee heist crime ring.

Nothing will. They’re already seizing on McMaster’s bullshit diversionary denial of something that the WAPO article specifically did not allege as proof that the story is “fake news.” Nevermind the number of publications that have corroborated it through their own sources and reporting. Nevermind that the GOP lawmakers can confirm the allegations on their own via the Oversight committees. They’re going to try to sweep this under the rug because nothing matters anymore.

Ana Navarro puzzles me. She continually drags the Republican Party, yet remains with them. She seems concerned, very concerned much like Senators McCain and Cornyn.

GOP Would’ve Rightly Tried to Impeach Clinton for Classified Document Disclosure (goes to The Hill):

GOP strategist Ana Navarro said Monday Republicans would be attempting to impeach Hillary Clinton immediately if they discovered she shared classified information with a Russian official.

Navarro, a vocal Trump critic, seemed to point at an alternate reality if Clinton had won the election instead of Donald Trump.

If Hillary Clinton leaked classified info to a Russian spook/diplomat, Republicans would rightly be drafting Articles of Impeachment N-O-W.
— Ana Navarro (@ananavarro) May 15, 2017

Navarro’s tweet came shortly after the Washington Post reported Monday evening that Trump shared highly classified information about the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) with top Russian diplomats in a meeting last week, a charge multiple White House officials have denied.

Honestly, if this had happened with Clinton as President and a DEMOCRATIC Congress, there’d be a late night session to debate options.

Much as the whole Bill Clinton blowjob debacle was a GOP partisan show, there were few Democrats who didn’t step forward to say something bad about him.

Now? Jesus Christ Almighty, the GOP are bending over and asking for more! I mean, there are apparently a number of them who KNOW this happened, who can’t pretend it’s all bullshit. And they’re letting it go, for strictly partisan reasons.

Just as they don’t operate on the same standard of “truth” as other people, they don’t have a any meaningful standard of conduct. If you’re on-side, you’re slotted into a power hierarchy where you can get away with more and more horrible shit the higher you rise.

They are precisely enacting C S Lewis’s description of people that want to cast their enemies as “darker than black”—Satanic baby-killers, as Fred Clark puts it—to excuse their own immorality.

Remember I was saying yesterday or day before that a lot of Chinese computer systems still run Win XP? Well, here ya go.

sixthtone.com

According to software company Qihoo 360, WannaCry hit tens of thousands of computers in China, with mainland users discovering their machines were no less vulnerable to a cyberattack than those across the globe. The malicious “ransomware” locks users out of their own systems, forcing them to pay a fine in order to regain access.

Among the 29,000 individual computers crippled by the virus over the weekend, nearly 15 percent were from universities, making on-campus users the hardest-hit demographic, said Sun Xiaojun, a product manager at Qihoo 360. Apart from university networks, the virus also spread through businesses and government institutions, he said.

The article notes that many systems in China are not updated regularly, but fails to note that many run pirated versions of Windows, and so cannot be updated easily — if at all. My university, at least, has replaced most of its older desktops with Win 7 machines, or upgraded them from XP, and the network admins seem quite capable of keeping the school intranet secure. So, no one I know here has been affected by the ransomware.

But, to play it safe, I’ve backed up my files to my cloud service and i avoid clicking on links in emails — even ones from people on my mail list.

My wife used to make that argument. (She first voted for Ronald Reagan in 1984, eventually became a Libertarian, and is now a Democrat.) In some of our political arguments I’ve noted that the GOP has always been this way, it just hasn’t been in your face like it is now.

They’re getting their ducks in a row. By the time F&F starts in a few hours, they’ll have settled on their talking points and that’ll be the jumping off point. But the initial wingnut tactic is the usual: Question the source. Of course, multiple news agencies have since confirmed their own inside sources are saying the same thing, but the focus is on WaPo and claiming that they’re either fabricating the story or their sources are lying to them. Why? Because Tillerson and McMaster claim that it’s a false story. Of course, the White House also claimed that the stories about Flynn were fabrications and he had Trump’s “full confidence.”

Adam Silverman over at BJ posits a plausible scenario: Since the Russians had TASS in the room during the meeting, odds are they have a tape and that would mean that the Russians have potential blackmail material against anybody who was a party to that meeting. So when IC learned what had occurred, they took the calculated risk that leaking to the US media was better than letting the Russians have leverage.

Over in Wyoming they got into a state constitutional crisis. Wyoming had approved participation in the common core curriculum, then the wingnuts went after the state education secretary and tried to strip her state constitutional powers both in the legislature and by the governor’s executive order.

She wound up suing half the state government to get them out of her job.

And these are all Republicans. No Democrats involved in that crap-fest that played out over the state line from me for a whole year. It would seem if you get a critical mass of conservatives together they fly apart.

lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com

Lawyers, Guns, and Money tries to disassemble the idea that all the right-wingers who voted for Trump (or Republicans in general) are some sort of monolithic block.

It is a long blog post, but pretty much hits every conservative idea I’ve heard all my voting life. And when you combine them all together, you get someone like Trump.

One example in the post (but there are more) is about rural Oregon:

“We pay enough taxes,” said Zach Holly, an auto repair worker in a shop a few blocks from the library who said his vote against the tax was not about libraries at all, but government waste. “I vote against taxes, across the board,” he said.

An instinctive reaction against higher taxes has been stitched into the fabric of America in recent decades, starting with the property tax revolts of the 1970s through the anti-tax orthodoxy expressed by many conservative members of Congress today. But few places in the nation are seeing the tangled implications of what that means — in real time — more vividly than in southwest Oregon, where a handful of rural counties are showing what happens when citizens push the logic of shrinking government to its extremes.

“The trust is gone from people who are paying the bills,” said Court Boice, a commissioner in Curry County, which borders Douglas. At least four property tax proposals aimed at keeping county services afloat, like the library rescue plan in Douglas, have failed in Curry County over the last decade.

Just east of Curry in Josephine County, the jail has been defunded after nine consecutive defeats of public safety tax levies — there will be another try next week in a special election — leading to a policy of catch-and-release for nonviolent criminals.

Demographic and economic changes in this swath of the Pacific Northwest, where thick forests brush down to the rocky Pacific Coast, have given the tax resistance movement its backbone. Retirees who came in recent years for the low housing costs or the conservative political culture have become a major voting bloc. And the tech jobs that are fueling growth in Portland, a three-hour drive north, are mostly just a dream.

This Seth Rich-Wikileaks conspiracy theory is being actively promoted by Fox. The private investigator is supposed to reveal his “report” on Fox News today and the owned and operated Fox affiliate here in DC is actively promoting it. No mention was made of Rich’s family’s, who have publicly and repeatedly dismissed the conspiracy theory, position on the PI’s report. No claim that the PI, who spoke on camera, was speaking for the family either.

The PI is making claims as to what is on Rich’s computer despite not having any access to it. In fact, he doesn’t even known if it’s the DCMPD or the FBI who has the computer as evidence, but he’s out there, stating as a fact, that there are contents linking Rich to Wikileaks.

Since when has FOX needed liberally-biased information like “evidence?”

Local FOX stations may not have their national “pundits” like Hannity on their stations, but they don’t exactly report the news straight, either.

My perusal of the wingnut blogs just now still shows them reporting on everything under the sun except yesterday’s blast-ex from the Washington Post and other outlets.

FOX News’s main Webpage has as its lead an article claiming North Korea is the source of the ransomware attack.

(The idea that North Korea would put ransomware on people’s computers might be plausible, but I don’t see the DPRK dealing in Bitcoin. With Mr. Trump’s recent rhetoric against the DPRK recently, that could also be the starting point for FOX to claim North Korea engaged in an act of war - send in the troops.)

As a friend of mine on Facebook said: “Tonight Corey Stewart denounced everyone EXCEPT white nationalists. Disgusting.”

Anti-establishment Republican Corey Stewart denounced lots of people, places and things Monday night, but maintained his silence over the recent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville that every other candidate in Virginia’s governor’s race has condemned.

In a Facebook live event billed as Stewart’s first comment on Saturday’s torch-lit rally around a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, Stewart did not directly mention Richard Spencer or other “alt-right” figures involved in the white-pride event.

He did, however, condemn Charlottesville City Council member Wes Bellamy, an African-American who voted for the statue’s pending removal.

When the State Dept. or FBI/DOJ wants to leak a damaging story they coordinate with CNN and the New York Times. (and vice-versa)

This consistent pattern has NEVER been broken.

Tonight using “unnamed” and the most vague descriptions of “anonymous sources” The Washington Post creates a fake news story specifically timed to release at the 5pm hour to hit President Donald Trump.

I wasn’t aware that CNN/the New York Times/ABC were the propaganda outlet of the CIA.

The rest of that comment thread gets worse: these folk really are unmoored from reality.

More from Conservative Treehouse (I thought treehouses were mostly for child’s play, but okay):

Transparent Media Agenda:

First indication is the timing of the Washington Post news release (5:02pm EDT).
Second indication coordination with NYT for immediate follow (6:26pm EDT)
Third indication - Same exact pattern as Flynn intelligence leaks. Identical timing.
Fourth indication - Same use of entirely anonymous sources: “former American government official” ie. an Obama official.
Only 3 U.S. Officials actually in the room with first-hand information: National Security Advisor HR McMaster, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Senior Adviser for policy, Dina Powell.
Publication motive/intent - The Washington Post never contacted anyone in the White House for questions, nor did they ask McMaster, Tillerson or Powell for comment before publication. All three call the Post article - fake News.

That law was enacted during Dumbya’s reign so Republicans just fell in line like the good Communist apparatchiks that they are. But those same Republicans will tell you Gawdless Obama wanted to indoctrinate kids under Common Core…

Exactly. NCLB was supposed to make all teachers and schools accountable, like manufacturing QC, so it hit all the correct right-wing buttons. CC, on the other hand, was supposed to encourage critical thinking, teh math skillz, and close analysis of non-fiction reading, which are anathema to right-wingers.

RWNJs are also opposed to IB and the AP US History curricula for similar reasons. Too thinking going on there.

Turkeys (especially the wild ones) are fairly bright. For a bird, anyway.

I frequently have to slow down on roads around here due to herds (regiments, murders, fleets, some mass noun of turkeys - oh right, flocks) of turkeys in the road.

Atrios nails Pumpkin Pinochet to the wall!

eschatonblog.com

Trump is a senile old man with some sort of degenerative brain condition and he will brag to anybody about anything. This isn’t about Russia, really, it’s about a president of the United States who brags to people that important people visit him in the Oval Office. A president of the United States who brags that he won the election. A president of the United States who tells reporters about how impressed people are with him. A man - not just a man, but the president of the United States of fucking America - who can’t have a conversation without telling someone how impressed other people are with him. He’ll tell anybody anything to impress them with how impressive he is.

Trump has been on my teevee and radio my entire adult life. I was a Howard Stern listener for a long time. Trump was a regular. He was always a horrible narcissistic braggart, but not like this. He has a problem, we have a problem, and despite the fact that his handlers keep telling the press that they have to treat him like a 5 year old, no one will come right out and say the obvious: Trump is in serious mental decline and also he runs the world.

re: #148 darthstar

I was so wondering why all of a sudden one of my old tweets were getting a lot of action, and then realized, it’s because Ryan’s old tweet has come back to haunt him.

Seems Ryan’s got the same issue as Trump. Everything they said would happen if you voted for Clinton would come to pass. And it has. Trump is violating all the norms and protocols and laws.

He undermined natsec and admitted to giving the Russians intel that they never should have gotten their hands on. Doesn’t matter that he has the ability to declassify intel. He’s screwed our ally who provided that intel, and that makes allies less likely to share intel with us. That undermines our national security going forward so long as anyone relating to the Trump admin is involved.

This increases our vulnerabilities and makes it more difficult to get intel needed to go after IS or other threats - including emerging threats around the world where we don’t necessarily have human assets in place. Trump fucked over the intel community royally, and screwed the nation as a result.

So of course the GOP response is that he’s entitled to declassify intel as he sees fit - ignoring all the rest. They ignore that he undermined natsec. They ignore that he gave this intel at a meeting where the only media present was TASS - no US media was allowed in the room. They ignore that the Trump admin never admitted that Kislyak was in the room; we learned of it via the photo TASS took of the meeting.

I have a big problem with vouchers for several reasons- A) I think we should be prioritizing building strong public schools, B) I hate the idea of taxpayer money going to private schools whether they be religious based or not, and C) I think private schools neglect children with disabilities- learning and physical.

It’s not exactly neglect. Private schools are under no legal obligation to accept disabled students, or students with behavioral/emotional problems, and most do not have/cannot afford the specialists on staff to deal with such students. Charter schools, which inhabit a murky zone betwixt public and private, can also screen out those students by using some murky qualifications: “we don’t think your child would be a good fit for our school” or some such BS.

OTOH, having spent more than 20 years teaching in a private high school, I can say most decent schools do not neglect their students if the kids are enrolled. I know we had to encourage parents to get their kids assessed for learning disabilities and on occasion substance abuse, but the intent was to keep the student, not kick him/her out.

Public schools and private schools are apples and oranges: unless private and church schools are compelled to take all children who apply and are only allowed to expel them if they present an extreme and egregious threat to the well-being of other students, then they cannot begin to be compared to public schools, especially in terms of overall performance.

talk about emails:

Emails about gun deals played a key role in a city inspector general’s investigation that led to last week’s shake-up at the Water Department, sources familiar with the probe said Monday.

One source with knowledge of the investigation said the City Hall watchdog initially began looking into emails regarding the gun deals and uncovered several that were sexist and racist, including messages about former President Barack Obama that dated back a year or two.

Yeah…pretty much right on target. If only it leads to something like booting this idiot out of office and brings down all the people that have excused him…like every Republican in Congress. Then we will be getting somewhere.

My hope for today…tomorrow…and every day these boobs are around.

Out out damn Trump.

Technically, he can share classified info.

However, the propriety of sharing top secret info that was passed on to the US with strict rules of use would say that he shouldn’t have.

By revealing that info, he put the sources at risk, undermined IC ties with the foreign nation, and increased the chances countries will hold back intel because they can’t trust Trump to use the information properly.

There’s quite a bit of speculation about what country got screwed as a result of this intel. Could be the UK (Australia, Canada, Britain, and New Zealand), or Israel.

If it were Israel, they’d be doubly pissed given that Trump apparently tried to schedule a visit to the Western Wall, but didn’t want Netenyahu to be there with him.

Israel wants the White House to explain why a U.S. diplomat preparing President Donald Trump’s visit to Jerusalem said Judaism’s Holy Western Wall in its Old City is part of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, an Israeli official said on Monday.

Israel considers all of Jerusalem as its indivisible capital, a claim that is not recognized internationally, and the Western Wall - the holiest prayer site for Jews - is part of territory it captured in the 1967 Middle East war.

Israel’s Channel 2 reported that during a planning meeting between U.S. and Israeli officials, the Israelis were told that Trump’s visit to the Western Wall was private, Israel did not have jurisdiction in the area and that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not welcome to accompany Trump there.

The bottom line is that there is no real constituency in the education universe that is for cost constraints. He points out that only the public schools whose funding is limited by gov’t action on budgets in general.

And the difference between the red and blue lines is that the blue lines can be either automated or moved to other countries.

Also, blue lines are consumables —things we replace instead of repair these days.

So, they aren’t cheaper — in the long run.

My Mom had her washer and driver for decades —now, we replace them every 10 years or so.

Did all of you catch the bit of news about the dreaded “Wanna Cry” ransom virus? Apparently it might have come from our own CIA/NSA.

Some speculation Wikileaks might be behind it…and who knows, maybe Eddie Snowden had a hand in it being released to the hackers of the world.

Hacker News. com - WannaCry Ransomeware That Is Hitting The World Right Now Uses NSA Windows Exploit

Ransomware Using NSA’s Exploit to Spread Rapidly

What’s interesting about this ransomware is that WannaCry attackers are leveraging a Windows exploit harvested from the NSA called EternalBlue, which was dumped by the Shadow Brokers hacking group over a month ago.

Microsoft released a patch for the vulnerability in March (MS17-010), but many users and organizations who did not patch their systems are open to attacks.

The exploit has the capability to penetrate into machines running unpatched version of Windows XP through 2008 R2 by exploiting flaws in Microsoft Windows SMB Server. This is why WannaCry campaign is spreading at an astonishing pace.

Once a single computer in your organization is hit by the WannaCry ransomware, the worm looks for other vulnerable computers and infects them as well.

“The worm functionality attempts to infect unpatched Windows machines in the local network. At the same time, it also executes massive scanning on Internet IP addresses to find and infect other vulnerable computers. This activity results in large SMB traffic from the infected host” Microsoft says.

And per my comment before, if it weren’t for automating and offshoring, those wouldn’t be nearly as low, and a big portion of those costs would be in wages, which would make college and health care a lot more affordable.

So that the wealthy can keep getting wealthier, we’ve made the really important stuff more expensive while making it harder for the average person to earn the money necessary to pay for them.

So why would a Trump supporter leak a damaging story about the president to multiple news organizations? According to Erickson, it’s the only way to get Trump to change his behavior.

“The President will not take any internal criticism, no matter how politely it is given,” Erickson explains. “He does not want advice, cannot be corrected, and is too insecure to see any constructive feedback as anything other than an attack. So some of the sources are left with no other option but to go to the media, leak the story, and hope that the intense blowback gives the President a swift kick in the butt.”

Trump has been portrayed by past WH sources as someone who not only won’t read his Presidential Daily Briefing, but doesn’t have the attention span for the single sheet of bullet points he requests in its place.

For WH sources to be crapping themselves enough to go to the Washington Post over this Russian briefing, you’d have to think he passed on something substantial, from documents, and with help.

And McCain is now saying that Trump giving Russia classified information is ‘disturbing.’

“The reports that the President shared sensitive intelligence with Russian officials are deeply disturbing,” McCain said in his statement. “Reports that this information was provided by a U.S. ally and shared without its knowledge sends a troubling signal to America’s allies and partners around the world and may impair their willingness to share intelligence with us in the future.”

He added that, “[r]egrettably, the time President Trump spent sharing sensitive information with the Russians was time he did not spend focusing on Russia’s aggressive behavior, including its interference in American and European elections, its illegal invasion of Ukraine and annexation of Crimea, its other destabilizing activities across Europe, and the slaughter of innocent civilians and targeting of hospitals in Syria.”

Either the Trump administration is a complete and utter disaster of no measurable precedent.

I read it. It was decent, but a lot of good Lizards could have written it as much of it has already been said here.

I did find this one paragraph (not Brooks) disturbing.

“We badly want to understand Trump, to grasp him,” David Roberts writes in Vox. “It might give us some sense of control, or at least an ability to predict what he will do next. But what if there’s nothing to understand? What if there is no there there?”

Books is correct but needs to be more definitive. There is nothing to understand, and no reason to go deeper. Damn, we’re going on two years of the obviousness of Trump’s character. Quit trying to understand him. Admit we know and let’s all write about getting him the hell out.

Damn, so many American’s are so squishy these days. Tell the freaking truth, we have all of the facts needed.

Trump doesn’t need a participation trophy…he needs his ass kicked.

And that is something that has been long needed in his life. No one told him NO!!!

I do hope that the unnamed ally with the ISIS mole has managed to save their asset. If we had real journalists, one of them might ask this directly at the next press conference.

Nah, on second thought it might backfire. Trump might say something like, “Since he is the only MIT grad they have, ISIS was likely to keep trusting him so he was left in place. Smart place, MIT, the smartest.”

Ding ding ding… The ally whose source was burned was… Israel.

That’s gonna get awkward with his buddy Bibi. Bibi can’t just sweep it under the rug, because Israeli national security was compromised as a result, and it puts them in harm’s way.

But he also can’t completely shut off the flow of intel, because Israel relies so heavily on the US for foreign aid.

At the same time, the US keeps acting dickish towards Israel, which again serves as a reminder that all the things Trump claimed Clinton would do are the things Trump is actually doing with Israel. Trump sold out Israel’s national security to the Russians.

One person on Reddit figured out the repercussions. And it explained it better than I could, I have to say.

Here is why this is significant. Everyone was saying, “well, Russia and the US have aligned interests in fighting ISIS, why is this an issue?”

Sure, but while that is accurate, Russia is the close ally of Iran, Israels greatest geopolitical foe. So now Russia has insight into Israel’s intelligence gathering apparatus and can pass that information along to Iran. This is absolutely a worst case scenario.

Worse than that.

Israel faces off against Syria, Hizbullah, Hamas, and IS, along with Iran (at distance). Russia passes intel off to Assad in Syria plus Iran. That eventually ends up in the hands of Hizbullah and Hamas, which seriously degrades Israel’s national security.

This is the kind of thing that puts Israel into a crisis mode, because one of their key advantages in the region is the ability to get intel no one else can from places no one else has assets.

And if Israel loses an asset stream, that means the US and NATO lose an asset stream. That’s got deadly repercussions.

Intelligence sharing has always been a crucial aspect of the US relationship with Israel. It is a very important partial quid pro quo for US aid, and that was true even before the formal security relationship started after the Six Day War. In fact, the loot from that war was probably the greatest technical intelligence coup since World War II and a very sore point with the Soviets and their successors to this day.

Israel can’t afford to make an exception. Israel’s national security is one of those nonpartisan lines for them. Bibi might try to give Trump cover, but the Mossad isn’t so forgiving.

Nothing short of catching Trump on video taking money from Putin will be enough for the Trump/GOP supporters who think this is all a game (Deep State) nonsense. Even then, they’ll question the timing.

All the while, Trump’s compromised and possibly permanently damaged US and Israeli intel streams from the Middle East for a long time to come. That has deadly consequences.

Trump the friend of Israel? He just hung them out to dry.
Trump is Bibi’s friend? He just fucked over Bibi.
Trump is a friend of Jews? He just compromised Israel’s national security.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr says he has yet to get an explanation from the White House on what happened in the Oval Office meeting where the president reportedly shared classified information with the Russians.

Burr says he waited all morning to get a call from someone in the room who can tell him what happened. He says: “Maybe they’re busy.”

Burr tells a small group of reporters in the Capitol that: “My major concern right now is that I don’t know what the president said.”

Burr added: “I’d like to think somebody from the White House who was in the room is going to get on the phone and tell me what they said.”
