My son E-mailed this morning to say he would stay in Jacksonville with his mother, despite my urgings for him to leave.
Now, the National Weather Service has issued a Storm Surge Warning for Inland Duval County.
* CHANGES TO WATCHES AND WARNINGS:
- A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Inland Duval
and
Major Hurricane Irma continues northwest away from the Northern Coast
of Cuba. Major Hurricane Irma continues to be a severe and extremely
dangerous hurricane. The latest forecast track takes Irma northward
over the far western part of the Florida Peninsula.Irma is a large hurricane and will produce far-reaching effects
regardless of where the exact center of the storm moves. The forecast
track would support category 1 hurricane-force winds along the
I-75 corridor of northern Florida, with strong tropical storm force
winds with potential gusts to hurricane force further east and over
the coastal waters, as well as across southeast Georgia. This will
result in numerous downed trees and power lines, leading to power
outages.

Except the most powerful part of the storm is the part to the right of the track (hurricane’s winds + forward motion speed of the storm).
The core of the hurricane appears in that map to rake the entire west coast of the state, plus storm surge + wind driven waves on top of that.

STORM SURGE: The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the

Captiva to Ana Maria Island…6 to 10 ft
Card Sound Bridge through Cape Sable, including the Florida Keys…

Sorry to jump on the “message framing” bandwagon again, but this one is important:
Instead of saying: “believe in climate change”
Say: “Accept the reality of climate change”
Instead of saying “believe in science”
Say: “Accept scientific evidence” or “Accept scientific facts”
The trouble with “believe in” is that it a) opens up the durr hurr, science is a religion line of argument, and b) subconsciously reinforces the idea that scientific facts are only “beliefs” and therefore a matter of subjective opinion.
Consider the following hypothetical exchange:
Sane person: “trump’s government doesn’t believe in science”
Wingnut rebuttal: herp derp, libtards believe in science, real Americans believe in GOD. MAGA!!1!1!!
vs.

Nukes would be too messy.
Virus Bombs deploy a hideous genetically-engineered pathogen called the Life-Eater virus intended to exterminate all forms of life in an inhabited planet’s biosphere. The pathogen, once released in aerosol form from the Virus Bombs, is extraordinarily virulent, capable of infecting every living thing, including flora, fauna and even bacteria on an entire world in only solar minutes if 100% orbital dispersal is achieved. The pathogen can penetrate even sealed environment suits, including Power Armour. The virus is designed to violently lyse living cells, essentially causing infected organisms to “melt” into a contaminated soup of organic matter. Entire forests and other plant matter can be reduced to this sludge in a short period of time, and individual animals die excruciating deaths as their bodies rapidly decay around them. The incredibly rapid breakdown of organic matter results in the steady release of great volumes of highly flammable gas, much of it composed of methane. Eventually, as the contamination spreads across the surface of the world, a single spark, a single lightning strike, or an intentional incendiary event, will cause this gas to ignite, sweeping the planet with an apocalyptic, global firestorm. This incredible heat will scour the world’s surface back to bare rock as well as eradicate most of the remaining oxygen in the planet’s atmosphere if it was habitable by Terran life.
In some cases, the lifeless Dead Worlds that are all that remain of planets that have suffered a virus bombing still prove valuable to the Adeptus Mechanicus after their violent death. These planets may be transformed into Mining Worlds or even prepared for a new round of terraforming to make them habitable for Imperial colonists once more.

You have to assume that a civilization that has mastered routine interstellar travel has either developed pure fusion bombs or moved up to antimatter bombs.
Russian meddling and clandestine influence obviously extend far beyond the presidential election last year. I’ve suspected for years, for example, that Russian money was behind the Texas secession movement’s amazing transition from running joke to serious political issue. Last year, nearly half of the Texas county Republican parties endorsed putting it on the ballot. Today’s Facebook revelations are smoking gun proof of that meddling.
Once the Trump infestation is cleared from the White House, there needs to be a comprehensive investigation of Russian political meddling at all levels, including its crucial role in conspiracy media and other right wing propaganda. Financial records should be checked, down to the level of local flunkies, and agents exposed and prosecuted. Soliciting or accepting foreign political contributions, including contributions in kind, is a criminal offense. The Republican Party is looking more and more like a criminal organization, eyeball deep in subversion. This can even rise to the level of treason in those cases, such as Jade Helm, where its members
have acted under Russian direction to incite violence against the United States.

In box office news, looks like It is a certified hit, likely on its way to blockbuster status. Against a production budget of $35 million, it’s already grossed over $100 million on its opening weekend, which is no small feat for an R-rated horror film. Doubtlessly helped by good word-of-mouth and positive critical reviews.
Add in marketing/distribution/promotion expenditures, I’d say this film is probably now in the black and everything from here on out is straight-up profit. Not bad at all for an opening weekend.
Not to mention that with people who’ve maybe never read the source novel, Stephen King’s gotta be smiling; I’m thinking that sales of the book will probably go up as well (anecdotally, I have a couple of students who saw the film but never read the book, so they’ve gone ahead and ordered themselves a copy - one ordered it in the English original, the other a Czech translation). And if Mr. King gets a cut of the film’s profits, well, then I say, “Party at Stephen King’s place this Halloween!!” LOL.

I honestly can’t say - I have no idea of their respective net worth. In any event, I’d say both of them are set………in the words of an H.P. Lovecraft character in one of his stories, “….wealthy beyond the necessity of pursuing a commercial life” (something Lovecraft never was - he died pretty much penniless).
I can’t help but reflect in a certain irony in that: Pennywise is certainly a Lovecraftian entity (an extradimenisonal being with its true form consisting of a shapeless mass of orange lights - the Deadlights) and of all the Lovecraftian critters running around out there in weird fiction, it is Pennywise that is the most famous…..probably more well-known that Cthulhu. Yet how many out there are aware of that? Not all that many, I’d speculate, unless they’ve read some of Lovecraft’s work.
Thanks to Mr. King, I started reading Lovecraft when I was around 14 or so (King mentioned him in “Danse Macabre”) and when “It” came out, I recognized Pennywise immediately as an homage to Lovecraft’s entities.

Every time I have to go to the Kaiser buildings in Hollywood those $¢ientologi$t$ are always at the corners passing out their garbage. Smack in the middle of the Kaiser campus is the old Cedars of Lebanon hospital that $¢ientology bought and turned into one of their many Hollywood offices.
I was born in that hospital. I’m old. My dad grew up in Hollywood.
Greets and saluts from the resistance in the NYC metro area. Irma’s eyewall is now upon the Keys and it’s absolutely ferocious with high winds, storm surge, and yet there are some people who wouldn’t or couldn’t get out.
Some people can’t get out - they don’t have the means.
Some wouldn’t get out - they thought they could ride out this storm, despite the horrific imagery we’ve seen from elsewhere in the Caribbean where entire islands were left virtually uninhabitable and all vegetation stripped.
You have the daredevils. You have the people who had to care for others who couldn’t get out. You have people who couldn’t afford to get out.
All of them will find themselves in potentially life-threatening circumstances. People who evacuated from Miami to Tampa are finding themselves in the path. There were really no good options for Floridians with a storm this size - the entire state was going to get slammed - the only question who got the bullseye and for how long would those winds and surge last.
I’ve been thinking about this, and tweeted about this the other day - but Florida really needs to consider more shelter-in-place facilities. We can’t and shouldn’t expect millions of people to move out of a state that really has only 2-3 major N/S routes and a handful of E-W roads across the state. Each and all are easily overwhelmed with the numbers involved, and you’d likely cause more problems with an evacuation than otherwise.
Sheltering in place with storm shelters designed to protect against flood and wind may make more sense than telling people to get out of the way of the storm. The state has many shelters that are part of existing structures - schools and the like, but they can’t hold but more than a fraction of the population.
What doesn’t help is that the GOP has systematically and almost uniformly opposed dealing with climate change and rising sea levels. They actively fight to block mention of the sound science, and instead have decided that their priority is to push tax cuts over all else - tax cuts ahead of disaster relief. Tax cuts ahead of mitigating risks from rising sea levels. Tax cuts above caring for the general welfare.
Tax cuts are the be-all and end-all for the GOP. But these tax cuts aren’t just spread across all Americans. Only a very thin slice of people will benefit - millionaires like Trump. Everyone else gets the burdens, because as revenues plummet, the GOP will demand that costs be contained and cut safety net programs all while the rich get even richer.
And that’s the GOP that Trump leads (and yeah, I’ve been watching as WaPo, NYT, and AP all try to claim that Trump is something other than a GOPer - that’s empirically and objectively… what’s the word/term I’m looking for, oh yeah… fucking bullshit). Trump’s budget called for cuts to FEMA and USCG. The GOP budget calls for cuts to the NFIP. The GOP have pursued tax policies that would deliver massive tax cuts to the rich and burdens shifted to everyone else. Their Trumpcare/Ryancare plans all were truly tax cuts paid for with massive and deep cuts to Medicaid. Their tax plan is more of the same.

Given that every summer is a hurricane season it seems unbelievable that Florida hasn’t started the “shelter in place” options. I am reminded of the UK using the tube stations (subways) as bomb shelters during WWII.
Not sure this is feasible in the keys areas. Are they any way sustainable in the long term (or the short term)

We had a crane collapse at One57 during Sandy - and I think it turned out that the crane operators didn’t put the crane into a mode that allows it to windvane with the winds, so it collapsed. Not sure what happened here, but it’s likely that the crane experienced higher winds than what we had up here.

That’s a trend. A lot of popular authors do that. Well into death, too. Kyle Mills (an exceptional author in his own right) is writing Vince Flynn novels now. And I learned an important point about preparing for a disaster or responding to one: Protein is very important. One of the Red Cross guys said that early on, they had lots of generic snacks - breakfast stuff, granola bars, etc - but after a while, people need protein. What became valuable were the tuna snack packs. They started having to ration them because people were going through them so fast. The packs are also good because they didn’t need to be refrigerated or heated. So, if you feel the need to give something to a relief effort other than money, things with meat, that don’t have to be refrigerated, are very useful.

Worthy of discussion sometime-Not uncommon for police to go gun in hand pointed down depending on information at the time. So even if staged, that gun out thing really happens commonly. The rules about drawing it are nothing serious really. The trainers tell them that drawing it is “tactical / defensive, holstering is administrative”.

I actually bake much more frequently than once a year. The day before my surgery I baked a full batch of challah, but now the holidays are coming up and even though we still have loaves from that previous baking I need more festive loaves.
I checked and we have all the ingredients available. I can stand for short intervals and the mixer does all the hard labor (I have an Ankarsrum).
I can shape the loaves sitting down.
Maybe I’m really slow — but per CNN online: “Trump also said he plans to ask Congress to expedite tax reform efforts in the wake of damages caused by the hurricane.” ?? What sense does that make?? Maybe I’m really slow — but per CNN online: “Trump also said he plans to ask Congress to expedite tax reform efforts in the wake of damages caused by the hurricane.” ?? What sense does that make?? Unless he is proposing a significant tax increase on the wealthiest of Americans, it would seem that any GOP tax proposal would reduce our ability to help during natural disasters or will just increase the national debt. What is he talking about? Of course, it’s not as though he actually understands anything about policy anyway.

re: #208 The Vicious Babushka
I actually bake much more frequently than once a year. The day before my surgery I baked a full batch of challah, but now the holidays are coming up and even though we still have loaves from that previous baking I need more festive loaves.
I checked and we have all the ingredients available. I can stand for short intervals and the mixer does all the hard labor (I have an Ankarsrum).
I can shape the loaves sitting down.
Then do it!
(I was referring to the annual high holidays not your baking. 🙂)

I’m not to sure about this video. Cop looks generic. And I’ve NEVER seen a cop not say a thing for that long. NEVER.
I’ve said stuff to cops like “Why you doing this?” and got stood up. And I’m white.
I could be wrong, but man……
Sniff test is buzzing.
A good point you make. But I think in the video age some cops are caught out trying to be a bad ass and then realizing they are on camera. To me the cop looked a little sheepish which is a tough and subtle emotion for an actor in a ‘cheap’ video.
I saw a video a few weeks a go with a sovereign citizen type young lady going on and on about why she is right and the cop was wrong. The cop let her go on for longer than the video in question.
But she was white. So? It ended with the cop saying he was towing the car and she had to get out because they can’t tow the car with her in it. Don’t know what occurred after that.
I guess we will learn. But it is sad we even have to be going over whether this is real or not…going over all the debates every month over some police over reaction or outright killing. Fuck.

“…In the bill, Bridenstine proposes that NASA amend its institutional objectives, which would include eliminating current objectives for the “expansion of human knowledge of the Earth and of phenomena in the atmosphere and space” and the conduct of studies on “the utilization of aeronautical and space activities for peaceful and scientific purposes.”

That’s a trend. A lot of popular authors do that. Well into death, too. Kyle Mills (an exceptional author in his own right) is writing Vince Flynn novels now. And the guy who’s writing the Bourne novels (mediocre at best) is keeping Ludlum “alive”. He killed Marie because he didn’t think he could make Bourne Bourne if she lived (much like the movies). I’m sure he would have made her a poor, gypsy girl (like the movies did, vs the PhD partner of Bourne in the books), if he could have.
Then there’s Robert K. Tannenbaum, whose first fiction books were ghostwritten and then, when his ghostwriter/cousin quit, his books went to shite.

I’ll break it down for the little nimrod: The current system as Bros know it is not something set in stone by the deity of their choosing. It is a system that was instituted largely because of (wait for it) progress from the old days of party bosses just choosing the party candidate in a smokey backroom. And guess what, even that system has been expanded, reformed, and changed over the years.
The current DNC primary process, including the much reviled “superdelegates”? That came about due to three major back-to-back losses in the span a decade. Two of those losses (McGovern & Mondale) were Bernie-like candidates: Old white men who appealed to a very narrow demographic that was over-represented in the party primaries. Both lost in humiliating fashion and convinced the DNC that it needed a check on the system, a way to prevent another firebrand with limited appeal outside of the party ranks from playing the system to win the nomination.

I’m finished with Facebook for the day. I’ve never seen the level of Hillary hatred passing 11 and going past 12…
Yeah, fuck that. I’m going in for my daily Rick Grimes.

Why aren’t all oppressed #Muslims the beneficiaries of Muslim ‘solidarity’? https://t.co/QvPxhRJ5VV
Cue more damning examples. Our ‘higher than the Himalayas, deeper than the deepest ocean’ friendship with China has mandated that we remain completely silent on the treatment of the Uighur ethnic minority that occupies the vast Xinjiang region bordering Pakistan to the north — and, which, even more significantly, China seeks to transform by building CPEC. The Uighur are Muslim, but there isn’t a hue and cry at the manner in which the Chinese state has suppressed their basic freedoms, and is now steadily facilitating the influx of ethnic Han Chinese into Xinjiang to fundamentally transform the region’s social mores.

I’m in a bit of a mood: dailykos.com.
This also brings up the question of when Senators Clinton and Obama are going to sign on as well?
Such a well-informed diarist. Sigh.

Was thinking of using it when I found the other quick clip[Embedded content]
I’ve always found that clip pretty funny because there’s a guy flying around in multiple tornadoes all upset about people on the ground taking pictures! while he’s flying around in a freakin’ helicopter.

I’m not ashamed of my vote for the only qualified candidate. Too bad Bernie Fascists can’t get over the fact that their candidate lost the primaries fair and square. I suppose they’re alright with a full 8 years of Trump. I’m not and Bernie cannot win in 2020.
