The press keep proclaiming minor events as the “pivot” they expect (nay, need) to happen, then Trump does something totally unhinged and they go back to the search. After all, it was barely a month ago that they proclaimed his replacement of Rinsed Prius with Gen. Kelly to be the “pivot” because Kelly would get things under control in the White House.

If you recall a bit back, the ambulatory pile of racist garbage Kris Kobach appointed a judge from my county (Jefferson) to the commission. I had assumed he was an under the radar nutjob, kind of like how the Luv Guv came from nowhere. Here is what Alan L. King wrote:
Even a commission member not in attendance made his critical voice heard. The panel “should be expanding the rights of our citizens to vote, instead of arguably looking for ways to keep people from voting,” wrote Alan L. King, a Democrat and probate judge in Jefferson County, Ala., in a stinging letter.
“Some parts of our electorate wish to beat their chests on so-called ‘voter fraud,’ and there may be some isolated instances” of irregularities, he wrote. “But, I would venture to say, thousands upon thousands more people are stricken from voter rolls without justifiable cause or have their vote suppressed.”

Even in their wildest dreams of privatizing social security they grandfather in anyone 55 or older, and they won’t even be able to do that. Without changing the law the only way they could starve Social Security would be to default on debt and for all the talk from some of the fringiest, that isn’t going to happen.
If they ever manage to touch the third rail of social security it will be incremental at best. Maybe raising the age a year or two(again people over 55 will likely be grandfathered to the old system) maybe using a different method to calculate the increases in cost of living etc.

I also get a bit frustrated when I hear people here in Texas talk about how Democrats used to be the dominant party. Yes, back when they were conservative. And if you’re talking about Ann Richards, that’s when the party was changing but voters hadn’t caught up.
That inertia is a big reason it will be a while before Texas goes blue. Even if we start getting Democrats elected, we will be purple for a while.

Hepatitis A occurs sporadically and in epidemics worldwide, with a tendency for cyclic recurrences. The hepatitis A virus is one of the most frequent causes of foodborne infection. Epidemics related to contaminated food or water can erupt explosively, such as the epidemic in Shanghai in 1988 that affected about 300 000 people1. Hepatitis A viruses persist in the environment and can withstand food-production processes routinely used to inactivate and/or control bacterial pathogens.

I think there might be a little age difference entering into these comments.
Some of us that are older are sad to see the divide and the damage it is causing. We may be at an age that we only ‘see’ things going away and might not be around to see a recovery. That is a very sad thing to face.
It’s a bit like leaving your ‘family’ in a good place for their future before your time is up. If you see that it may not happen and the people facing the future may have to go through what has already been gone through it is frustrating.

Speaking of prepared foods, found a rock in my frozen blueberries this morning.
I suppose the machine harvester just kicked up enough of the ground for it to get in. The rock was the size of the blueberries, which means it couldn’t be screened out by size.
Here’s a thing about blueberries (I know this since they are a major crop on my farm): blueberries are never washed before freezing. If you buy fresh or frozen blueberries, always wash/rinse them before eating them.
re: #87 Backwoods_Sleuth
I applied earlier this year.
Figured I might as well get while I can.
People are correct to worry about changes to SS. Up until 1984 benefits weren’t taxable for the obvious reason that you’d already paid taxes on your “contribution” when it was deducted from your paycheck. So the government can certainly change the rules again, probably by continuing to increase the minimum age you can apply for full benefits.
I have no doubt that the Republicans will come up with even more ingenious ways to screw people out of what they’re owed.

It sucks for me, at 47, having to tell my kids that they’re going to have to be participants in a struggle that we thought was over. My kids and I are white, but I’ve tried to make them aware of things. I’ve explained to them how if minorities and women have to struggle for rights, then they as men will suffer as well.

And let’s remember that, although Eric Bolling did get fired from Fox just last week for his alleged harassment, he sailed along during the Obama years without the White House ever calling for his firing, saying shit like this:
Eric Bolling compared Obama to a drug dealer who opens “Barry’s Pot and Coke Emporium.”
At other times, Bolling has called the President Comrade Obama, The Socialist Spewing Policy Maker and accused him of chugging 40’s” and hosting “a hoodlum in the Hizzouse.”
Glenn Beck did get let go from Fox when his advertisers deserted him, but before that said shit about Obama like:
“a racist with deep-seated hatred for white people.”
And just a few of the yam’s greatest hits included:
“Obama and his attack dogs have nothing but hate and anger in their hearts and spew it whenever possible.”
He called Obama a foreign candidate.
He said Obama was too dumb to have legitimately gotten through college and law school.
So spare us your outrage, Sarah Huckabee, and STFU.

When a reporter asked the senator if the president had expressed regret, a pained look flashed on Mr. Scott’s face. He paused for a few seconds and replied, “He certainly tried to explain what he was trying to convey.”
Soon after the meeting ended, White House officials emailed reporters a photograph of Mr. Trump listening intently as Mr. Scott made a point, with both sitting in chairs often used for bilateral meetings with foreign leaders. The White House misidentified him as Tom Scott.

Hell, ESPN revived their relationship with Hank Williams Jr. This summer.
And as a refresher, some of Hank Jr.’s greatest hits:
Williams Jr. on Fox and Friends, saying about Obama playing golf with Boehner:
“That would be like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu
“They’re the enemy… Obama! And Biden!” (He also referred to the two men as the Three Stooges, so apparently math is also not a strong suit.)
“We’ve got a Muslim for a President who hates cowboys, hates cowgirls, hates fishing, hates farming, loves gays, and we hate him.”
Each employee record included a company username in plain text, and a corresponding password that was obfuscated by a series of dots. The “edit users” page obscured the Veraz employee’s password, but the same password was exposed by sloppy coding on the Web page.
However, all one needed to do in order to view said password was to right-click on the employee’s profile page and select “view source,” a function that displays the raw HTML code which makes up the Web site. Buried in that HTML code was the employee’s password in plain text.A review of those accounts shows all employee passwords were the same as each user’s username. Worse still, each employee’s username appears to be nothing more than their last name, or a combination of their first initial and last name. In other words, if you knew an Equifax Argentina employee’s last name, you also could work out their password for this credit dispute portal quite easily.
jhmfc!
Here’s what pisses me off about the Experian thing: You don’t get to choose if you’re a customer or not. If they have your info then they have your info and there’s not really a damn thing you can do about it.
I really hate how credit bureaus operate with such impunity regarding our financial well being.

Economic forecasts for more than a year in the future are not worth the pixels they are displayed on. Maybe there will be an issue with Social Security in 2034 or maybe 2134 or maybe 2027 or maybe never. We don’t live in a static world with no change in population or environment or technology or mortality. Even an august body like the Social Security trustees who try their best are using the best designed tables and assumptions are using assumptions that are, in essence, close to worthless for any long term prognostication. In 10 years, it might be worth revisiting this issue — but as long as the GOP does nothing to affect the current program, either benefits or revenues, it’s way premature to look at this or worry people with dire predictions about this program. Other programs yes — but not Social Security.
Sanders’s remarks bear attention because they are clearly part of a coordinated plan to maliciously besmirch an individual. After her first comment, Sanders had a day to think about it before making her Tuesday remarks. After those, she had a day to think about it before making today’s comments, which appeared to come from a prepared text. So this is not an impulsive, on-the-spot type slime job. This is a deliberate, planned effort of the type that reflects the Trump White House’s considered views of how it should respond to Comey. That is, with months to think about the matter, the White House has decided that it wants to respond to Comey’s testimony by falsely accusing him of criminal activity — and to offer no evidence to support its slanders.
It is a prototypical abuse of power — and particularly pernicious because of the White House’s attempts to involve the Justice Department in the project.

AFAIK, all the random number generators out there are actually pseudo random number generators. The programs use complex mathematical formulas to generate a sequence of numbers; if a user gives the routine a starting seed, the numbers produced will always be the same for that seed. There are mathematical tests to see if a sequence appears random and these will all pass those tests, but they aren’t truly random.

re: #209 Ace-o-aces
Martin Shkreli is a vile human being, and his Facebook post definitely crossed the line. What kind of evil asshole troll would even attempt to stand up for him?
You guessed it!

re: #199 dog philosopher ஐஒஔ௸
do you have the source for mt_rand()?
It’s a built-in PHP function.
It’s true that software-based random number generators aren’t cryptographically secure, but for choosing a random character from a list (as in the code above), that’s not really an important issue.
No, you grotesque con man, Shkreli had his bail revoked because he offered money for people to assault Hillary. @PrisonPlanet pic.twitter.com/x09LcLZ8lW

re: #200 Hecuba’s daughter
AFAIK, all the random number generators out there are actually pseudo random number generators. The programs use complex mathematical formulas to generate a sequence of numbers; if a user gives the routine a starting seed, the numbers produced will always be the same for that seed. There are mathematical tests to see if a sequence appears random and these will all pass those tests, but they aren’t truly random.
The mathematical operations used in some random number generators are exceedingly simple (i.e., add and multiply), and can still provide pseudo-random sequences that will pass statistical tests for randomness. Making the math more complicated has been known to spoil the randomness, so this is definitely not a do-it-yourself part of computer programming.

Yep, true randomness as far as I’m aware requires specialized hardware that acquires its random inputs from a proven stochastic physical process or signal such as atmospheric noise.
re: #207 klys (maker of Silmarils)
Yes.
That’s why you don’t try and write one yourself, because it’s very easy to fuck them up in a way that can be figured out. You use someone else’s well tested implementation of it.
Recently, there was a new cryptocurrency called Iota launched. Some experts at MIT Media Lab discovered that the Iota developers had written their own cryptographic subroutines, which the MIT folks hacked in no time. Their advice to the Iota team, which fixed the errors, was not to create their own subroutines, but use ones that were already vetted by teams of experts in cryptography.
Cryptocurrencies depend on cryptographic routines to make their transaction ledgers secure and reliable. Faulty code subverts the whole concept of the blockchain.

The most common technique for seeding a PRNG, as well as the simplest, is to feed it the current timestamp. Unfortunately, this amounts to security by obscurity - if someone can get ahold of the current timestamp, they now have your random number sequence. Properly seeding a PRNG is a topic in itself.

I think that the one we used 30+ years ago for our Monte Carlo simulations for asset/liability studies was designed by a member of our team who was a PhD in mathematics. At that time, he was skeptical of the quality of the function that was included with the compiler. Of course, the results were useless anyway since the underlying theory on markets is so flawed. But we did produce colorful graphs for our clients!

Yep—it’s a giant shit sandwich. Maybe Lindsey thought that by acting sort of sane on DACA, he could slide this craporama through.

Republicans are all crooks, so you always have to follow the money. Here repeal of the ACA amounts to a giant tax cut for the rich, so it’s no surprise at all that they are returning to this theme.
My only surprise in this mess is that their first repeal attempt failed.
But that tan suit.

So senile he can’t dress himself anymore.
Well, actually, he couldn’t before either.
re: #137 calochortus
Has anyone posted this happy little story? Shkreli jailed for bounty on Clinton’s hair.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
Shall we start a pool to pick the day Trump pardons him?

re: #224 Ace Rothstein
Also, from the NYT on the Trump/Scott meeting today:
Soon after the meeting ended, White House officials emailed reporters a photograph of Mr. Trump listening intently as Mr. Scott made a point, with both sitting in chairs often used for bilateral meetings with foreign leaders. The White House misidentified him as Tom Scott.
re: #20 HappyWarrior
So are any of the so called free speech activists going to say something about a government official urging someone be fired for being critical of Trump? Bueller.
Great question. They had no problem with Kaepernick’s sidelining for his silent protests. They want to shut down BLM activists. They aren’t free speech activists. They’re hate speech activists.

“falsified travel records” = lied. Why not just say he lied? And it appears that lying is okay with this administration so I wonder why he really withdrew.

Pretty much any effort we take to safeguard our own security/data is undermined by the least secure link.
And it’s always going to be the weak link outside our own damned control.

Did Mikey get a little scared once he heard many of his kind could be on the investigation lists? Maybe some of this might have sobered him up a bit.
