Sad thing is he’ll succeed in hiding this from his supporters. I’m beginning to think they never acquired object permanence.
The word that Mr. Olberman implied but did not say, that the GOP and Donald Trump seem to be complicit in:
Genocide.
Until 2016, parties routinely rallied behind the winner in a primary. But Trump is trying to rewrite history.

(Requirements for recordkeeping of social media utterances).
No he is not allowed to delete (or change) tweets.
Enforcing it would require a party that cares about law-and-order (Democrats) to be in power.
This issue has been called out ever since Trump was elected. The GOP is ignoring it. They need their tax cuts for billionaires and they do not care what laws they break (or people they kill either through healthcare or ignoring disasters) to get those tax cuts.

General Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford told the Senate Armed Services Committee today that it was indeed the White House, not the Air Force, that cut the ability to mid-air refuel from the Air Force One replacement program requirements.
Oriana Pawlyk of military.com broke the story today after Senator Tom Cotton questioned the Pentagon’s top uniformed official on the necessity to be able to keep the aircraft airborne in the event of a nuclear strike. Dunford replied:
“I think that was a decision that was not made by the Air Force, but made by the White House, and I think it had to do with the fiscal constraints on the program… That will certainly be a limiting factor, and we’ll have to plan accordingly.”
The Senator replied:
“I think we may have to revisit that decision here on Capitol Hill.”
In his acceptance speech, Roy Moore says he looks forward to someday being kicked out of the US Senate.

Naw, it’s just that Trump is never wrong.
Only he backstabbed Luther just a few days before the election by saying “I might have made a mistake,” in endorsing him. He said this while Strange was standing next to him on stage, and Moore’s campaign used adds with this footage to further their lead. Imagine how embarrassing that must have been for poor Big Luther, having to sit there while our craven President just politically cucks him right there in front of the world.
How can anybody in Trump’s own party ever trust him after something like that?
The Trump Administration withholding aid, food, medical supplies from millions of desperate Puerto Ricans. When the Soviet Union did that to Ukrainians in the 1930’s, it was called a genocide. When Pakistan did that to East Pakistan (Bangladesh) in 1971, it was called a genocide. When Indonesia did that to East Timor in 1975, it was called a genocide.
We’re seeing our own government trying to commit genocide of our citizens in Puerto Rico.

re: #62 DodgerFan1988
People have a hard time seeing it in real time. Many have known what this is and can mean since 11/9 and every single thing they’ve done since then has supported it. This is a racist hybrid auto-klepto-theo-cratic push for the wholesale remaking and retaking of America, empowered in many ways by a foreign government.
On days when I have a really hard time dealing with it all, I remind myself that it’s good that I don’t think it’s normal or get used to it.

And that’s why it needs to be called out as such.
I can call it genocide in a place like LGF or my E-mail but I can’t reach very far.
Those with a large platform (major politicians or political parties, celebrities, &c) are the ones who need to be using “genocide.”
Framing is always important in politics, and “genocide” is one word that if you have to argue against it, you’re losing.
I’m not on Twitter or Facebook, so I can’t stick “genocide” into Republican politician timelines.
Others can, and they should be doing so at every opportunity.
If Roy Moore is on social media, right now people should be asking on Facebook and Twitter (where the whole world can see it) whether he supports genocide.
Make him deny it. If you’re explaining, you’re losing in politics.
That word should show up in every Republican’s timeline, every single day.
re: #67 Anymouse 🌹
Few with the platforms that would be useful will even say ‘Lie’ or ‘Racist’ so that’s a battle we’ve been losing unfortunately.
I hope we can make that leap though because, as you expressed, it’s a really important part of the communication and framing. And not repeating every damn mistake from the past would be nice too. History is rhyming with the present way too much right now and we need to sue for copyright infringement.

That’s easy. They’ll deny it. They will say DT is doing “all he can.” Lying does not bother them.
How can anybody in Trump’s own party ever trust him after something like that?
The party has true believers who will just follow along because they don’t evaluate “what just happened” in terms you or I would, because they don’t value consistency, and their version of “loyalty” operates more like an honor culture—different rules for those “in” than “out,” lots of covering bad behavior, and lots of nudge-nudge-wink-wink exceptions to rules—than a formal ethical code.
…and it has cynics who are loyal because loyalty is necessary to make the heist come off.

I’ve just finished watching the same ep. I was 12 at that point in history, and remember my feelings at the time vividly. I believed then that Westmoreland was lying through his teeth. I hated the hawks in the government and military who wanted to send even more men and women into hell, and was particularly afraid of what might happen when I reached 18. Because then, it looked as though the war in Viet Nam would last forever.
Rev. King being shot. Then Bobby Kennedy being shot. The riots everywhere. Student protests — I lived on Long Island, so the Columbia U occupation was heavily covered. There was a kind of existential dread among people my age — some, not all, I suppose. As the Burns films show, there were still plenty of young men stupid enough to want to go to Vietnam to “defend the USA.”

Trump’s comments blaming Puerto Rico for its storm damage seem due to his golf course bankruptcy (Goes to Daily Kos, more at the link):
This week, Trump’s attacking the NFL was perhaps yet another deflection, but it may have come closer to Agent Orange’s self-interest by omission.
It now makes more sense that he seemed to avoid mentioning the storm damage emergency in Puerto Rico,
Quite the opposite … mentioning Puerto Rico tarnishes his brand.
Rather, PR is the site of yet another Trump business failure, and does explain his tweets trashing the banks, infrastructure, and territorial debt.
It is always about him and his money.

Wait and see what he does when a blue state needs help.
My nightmare - a megathrust quake hits the Cascadia Subduction Zone. A 9.0 (or bigger) on the moment magnitude scale, lasting for about five minutes. Oregon and Washington suffer unprecedented devastation (coastal areas? forget it…..they’re gone; the inevitable tsunami will cause destruction unlike anything the continental US has ever seen) with tens of thousands dead, infrastructure utterly destroyed and hundreds of billions in property damage (enough to bankrupt insurance companies, I’d say). The regional economic effects would be nothing short of catastrophic with spillover into the national economy. It’s been estimated that it would take a few months to restore basic services in most areas, and in the coastal inundation zones, probably a couple of years before things return to normal. There’d also very likely be a depopulation event, as the survivors begin making their way out of the ruins of the Pacific Northwest to other parts of the USA.
And if this apocalyptic scenario happens while Trump is POTUS? God help those folks, ‘cause Trump sure as shit isn’t going to do much beyond spouting empty platitudes on Twitter.
re: #90 Dr Lizardo
Pretty much nowhere is safe … earthquakes in Cascadia or California, perhaps also Missouri or off the coast of South Carolina … hurricanes along the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico, Tornado Alley up the middle, and Yellowstone Caldera just waiting to bury us here… .
Trump’s administration still hasn’t gotten the emergency declaration for the tornadoes in my county in June doing anything yet (one of the things that’s pulling his supporters away in the local area).
Aside from the bigotry involving Puerto Rico (and perhaps the humiliation of his bankruptcy there just before he ran for office), I think the other issue is he simply doesn’t know what to do.
Worse, he is too proud to admit he doesn’t know what to do and ask someone who does. Senator Marco Rubio just travelled to Puerto Rico to get a first-hand look at the scale of damage there and in the Virgin Islands … I doubt Trump gives a hoot about anything Sen. Rubio learned on his trip.
So why were relief ships not ready to sail as soon as the storm had allowed them?
re: #91 Anymouse 🌹
Yeah……..Trump’s hopelessly out of his depth. He really has no idea what he’s doing whatsoever and like you said, he’s too proud - and stubborn - to admit this.
re: #92 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
So why were relief ships not ready to sail as soon as the storm had allowed them?
That’s a rhetorical question, right?
But if not — because Trump has no clue about any goddamned thing. Like a lot of the RWNJ, they think the country sort of runs on automatic and that President is like Prom King. They have no concept at all of what the job entails other than waving and being a symbolic avatar.
Bill Clinton and Barack Obama did their work so smoothly the wingers didn’t realize it was actually work; they thought the culture-war speechifying was all those guys did. Which is also why they liked GWB so much. It wasn’t until Katrina that the right realized OMG it’s a real job and there’s real things he’s supposed to be doing and he’s not doing them!!
re: #93 Dr Lizardo
I don’t think he cares at all.
Then beyond that he doesn’t have a competent regime at all. They do not know how to govern and they don’t care to learn. Lots of institutional memory is gone with a refusal to reach out to any of the “non-loyals”. Power struggles and chaos are in the mix too and you just get disasters upon disasters.
Then…profit time! Shock doctrine.
re: #94 sagehen
That’s a rhetorical question, right?
Rhetorical in the sense that I wonder if Trump was aware that Puerto Rico is a US territory to begin with…
The Republicans in the Senate, even if they have not a humanitarian bone in their bodies and many of them harbor particular animus for Spanish-speakers… you’d think a few of them would be politically cunning enough to realize that if a million Puerto Ricans up and move to the gulf states… they are American citizens, and not a one of them will ever vote Republican again for the rest of their lives.

PHOENIX (AP) — A leading purveyor of fake news in the 2016 presidential election has died outside Phoenix at the age of 38.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Mark Casey said Tuesday authorities discovered Paul Horner dead in his bed on Sept. 18.
Casey said the Maricopa County medical examiner performed an autopsy which showed there were no signs of foul play. He said Horner had a history of prescription drug abuse and that “evidence at the scene suggested this could be an accidental overdose.”
Horner was known for writing false stories and disseminating internet hoaxes that often went viral on Facebook and hoodwinked thousands of people.
They included a story falsely claiming President Barack Obama was gay and a radical Muslim, and another saying protesters were being paid thousands of dollars to demonstrate at Donald Trump’s campaign rallies.
Horner took on greater prominence during the presidential election when false stories were widely shared on social media during the race between Trump and Hillary Clinton.
In an interview with The Washington Post in 2016, Horner said he thought Trump won the White House because of him. Horner said Trump’s supporters didn’t fact-check his stories before posting them.

That is not what bugs me half as much as the alacrity with which major news agencies are ready to pick up and run with these stories for fear of being scooped
Well, regrettably the news now operates at the speed of the Internet.
Unless you live in an area like mine where the overwhelming majority of the populace are still dependent on things like the morning newspaper, the urge to beat out folk on the Internet with a “scoop” becomes irresistible.
Some Website makes up a lie, and it’s on FOX in half an hour. Twenty-four hour news organisations have to fill their time with something, and OMYGODHEREMAILS! sure sounded like a big time scoop.
The New York Times didn’t learn after Judith Miller.

The Nazi Sites of Los Angeles
A walking tour of where the Fascists and Hitlerites gathered in California.
L1 was Leon Lewis, an unassuming lawyer who had served in the First World War and helped found the Anti-Defamation League. The Nazis called him “the most dangerous Jew in Los Angeles.” He worked independently; the F.B.I. focussed its scant resources on the Communist threat, and many on the city’s police force were Klansmen or American Fascists, or at least sympathetic to the anti-Jewish attitudes of the Hitlerites. By the time Pearl Harbor was attacked, Lewis’s agents had disrupted elaborate efforts to spread Nazi ideology in the United States, revealed fifth columnists and saboteurs inside the Douglas aircraft plant, and foiled two murder plots whose targets included not only the spymaster but also Jack Benny, Samuel Goldwyn, Charlie Chaplin, and Louis B. Mayer. “The Nazis saw L.A. as more important than Jew York, as they called it,” Ross said. “La Guardia, who was half Jewish, had the ports closely watched, whereas in L.A. they were able to bring in propaganda, money, everything they wanted, without a worry.”
The whole story is pretty short; not a book review, but a profile of a guy who wrote a book coming out soon that sounds fascinating

King Salman of Saudi Arabia to lift ban on women driving.
Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has issued a decree allowing women to drive for the first time, to the joy of activists.
The Gulf kingdom is the only country in the world that bans women from driving.
Until now, only men were allowed licences and women who drove in public risked being arrested and fined.
…
What happens now?
A ministerial body will be set up to give advice within 30 days
The royal order will be implemented by 24 June 2018The country’s US ambassador, Prince Khaled bin Salman, confirmed that women would not have to get male permission to take driving lessons, and would be able to drive anywhere they liked.
Good for women in Saudi Arabia, and a wingnut talking point here taken away. (More at the BBC link)

The details of a transgender teen’s gruesome killing have shocked a Missouri community and sparked speculation that it was a hate crime. The victim had come out earlier this year.
Ally Steinfeld, 17, was stabbed and her mutilated body was burned earlier this month at a residence in Cabool, Mo., in the Ozarks, police say. Three people have been charged with murder. One other faces less severe charges.
“I still don’t know who in their right minds would do something like that,” said Linda Camara, who is close friends with one of Steinfeld’s cousins. “Killing someone is very bad, but I mean to do it … oh my God, to do it like that. Just … I … I … oh, God. I just can’t even see someone doing that.”
Camara told The Star that she believes Steinfeld’s gender identity played a role in the killing.
Steinfeld was 17 and had posted on social media accounts that she was trans.

“A former Blue Springs, Mo., physician faces multiple sex charges involving improper activity with a teenage boy in eastern Jackson County over many years, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced August 17, 2015.
Joseph T. Mackey, 43 (dob 4/22/1972), of Lee’s Summit, faces eight counts of Statutory Sodomy in the Second Degree.
According to court records, the victim told Blue Springs police that he first met Mackey, then a physician in Blue Springs, when he was 11 years old, through scouting.
Later, the victim said Mackey introduced him to alcohol during a trip to St. Louis. Soon after, the victim, then 15, spent the night at Mackey’s home in Lee’s Summit where they touched each other and Mackey also engaged in oral sex with the victim.

The timbre of my voice and my blood pressure rose as I barked, “No, not a dime. I’m a Marxist Feminist Slut, How Do I Find an Open Relationship
Where The Nation crosses Das Capital with a Cosmopolitan help column… .
Dear Liza,
I’m a 32-year-old woman who would like to have kids and a life partner in the not-so-distant future. And lucky me! I’ve recently started dating an excellent candidate. But I can’t even pretend to think it’s possible (or desirable) to have sex with just one person for the rest of my life or even, frankly, for a few years.
Monogamy feels antithetical to the type of feminism and anticapitalism I subscribe to. I am repulsed by the idea of being a man’s property. Also, monogamy—like capitalism—requires us to believe in a false scarcity: that we have to struggle for every little bit and that everything we gain comes at someone else’s expense. The kind of liberatory future I’d like to see is one of abundance and generosity and sharing. One of the few places we can experiment with that now is in our love lives.
But ALL the decent men I’ve dated are really opposed to open relationships, while the men I’ve slept with who say they fancy the idea don’t ever stick around long enough for the “relationship” part of an open relationship.

A fire broke out early Wednesday at the Ecuadorean Embassy in the nation’s capital.
District of Columbia fire and EMS described it in a Twitter post as a two-alarm fire and reported the blaze had been brought under control. Flames could be seen rising from the roof of the structure, just after midnight Wednesday, in a neighborhood that is home to some embassies.
Emergency equipment was remaining on the scene as daybreak approached, and traffic congestion was likely in the area at the start of the morning rush hour.
WRC-TV reported that more than 100 firefighters fought the blaze for about 2 hours and that one firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Delta County is over on the west side of Colorado, and has a lot of conservative wingnuts.
Assertive Christians will always try to push the boundaries of what is lawful. School districts across the nation are under attack (see Good News Clubs).
For conservatives and libertarians that think that public schools should be abolished, that also works for them: When they get sued, and put up hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend a civil rights lawsuit, that money comes out of the school budget.
Note Christians also do that in liberal states. Jessica Ahlquist in Rhode Island was taken to task for complaining about a religious prayer banner placed in the school.
She received death threats, had to have police protection, and was called out by a Christian state representative who called her “an evil little thing” on the radio.
After the courts found in her favour, that state representative, good Christian he is, was arrested for embezzlement this year.
Of note, the state representative that went after her (Peter Palumbo) is a Democrat. There are religious wingnuts in our party as well, though fewer.

I do not think it will be able to deal with its own success. And for now, it has the luxury of being a protest party: it does not have to come up with viable proposals or solutions, just whine and complain a lot.
But just imagine a nation in which the AfD managed to take over a major political party and convince it that it needed their support and their preferred candidate in order to succeed….and you would pretty much have the GOP and the Tea Party in 2016.

According to Politico, Trump praised Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) before admitting it’s probably time for him to begin working with the other side of the aisle if he wants any legislative wins.
“Maybe I’ll make a deal with the Democrats. They’re calling me like crazy. Can we make a deal? Can we make a deal?” he told the audience.
Translation: The White House has been desperately calling Nancy and Chuck to beg for some sort of “deal” so Donny can get another “win” to celebrate in the papers.
Next stop, BS internet rumors:
Trump also addressed his ongoing NFL player battle about standing instead of kneeling during the American National Anthem.
“They have a rule, you can’t dance in the end zone, you can’t wear pink socks, one guy’s mother had breast cancer and they wouldn’t let him, you can’t do anything! But you’re allowed to sit down for the national anthem,” Trump said during his 40-minute speech.
*snip*
“All Goodell had to do was say there’s rules and you can’t do it, suspend him for a couple games, you would never have had this,” Trump told the audience. “Now you have this whole thing going and it’s a very dangerous thing ‘cause we cannot let anyone disrespect our country like that.”
Considering the number of wingnut sites insisting that there exists a rule against kneeling/sitting during the National Anthem despite nobody being able to actually quote the rule in full or show it in the official rule book, there’s no telling where Donny first heard this BS. But I do find amusement in his belief that the way to end protests is to punish the protestors, something that has totally failed to work for him so far.
But let’s end on the line that shows just how much of a shitshow the last year has been:

Trump is just bullshitting, as usual. Anyway this is why I’m glad Roy Moore beat Luther Strange. Yes Moore is a theocratic, racist homophobe, but he will make it harder for McConnell to pass bad legislation by joining Cruz and Paul in demanding it be even worse. There are enough well-founded charges to indict Trump out tomorrow: conflict of interest, obstruction of justice, collusion with a foreign government to influence and election, but as long as the GOP has a majority, it is not likely to act until they find their grasp on power seriously threatened.

Correctamundo.
The earliest Congress is likely to act is January 2019 (assuming that the House flips to Democratic control).
State prosecutions of Trump officials could begin well before that in places like NY and CA or NJ (presaging the federal action).
NY and CA could see potential prosecutions as early as this year. NY AG Scheiderman is taking the lead on this, but other places where Trump or his cronies operated could also act - NJ could see prosecutions as early as next year as a Democrat is likely to win the governorship and state prosecutors move against Kushner and his cronies. They could also go after Trump for emoluments clause violations at Bedminster.

Good morning!
Those images bring back memories. My dad was a heck of a tomato gardener and at this time of the year we would have several bushel baskets full of ripe tomatoes.
My task was the kid that crushed them and strained them with the wood pestle in the tall truncated colander with the little holes in it on a stand.
Them my mom would slowly cook the watery juice down until it was almost a tomato sauce. That was her ‘juice.’ That homemade juice/sauce was so damn good. Yummmm.

For the morning crew, totally OT:
Some folks may remember that back in March I lost a good friend. He led a singular life so his sickness wasn’t a complete surprise. He likely already knew before the diagnosis, then fought in his particularly obstinate way. Still, it is never easy. He married my oldest, dearest friend in February, about a month before he died. They had been together like 15 years. She is still here.
As I wrote last week in “What’s Normal”, while sitting around during Irma, I had lots of time to muse about stuff. I thought you’d like to meet these two through the speech I didn’t actually give. At the time, I couldn’t…

Yesterday was a good indication. Roy Moore beats an ‘established’ candidate in a primary. Coker announces he is out, due mostly because he isn’t crazy enough. Trump voters hammer his multiple failures: ‘A slogan doesn’t cut it for me anymore — he’s had 9 months’ https://t.co/S9jz3Kp3i4

Trump voter Mark O’Brien, reflecting upon the Republican Party’s recent failure to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, said that while Trump was good at coming up with catchy slogans, he hasn’t shown that he knows how to negotiate and govern.
“The slogan doesn’t cut it for me anymore,” O’Brien said. “He’s had nine months.”
And you had longer than nine months to clue in to the reality that all he had was a slogan. What does that say about you, Mark?
Trump voter Jordan Jacquay similarly noted that “‘repeal and replace’ was more of a slogan than a plan,” as evidenced by the fact that the Republican Party had no concrete replacement plan for the Affordable Care Act ready to go despite vowing to repeal it for the past seven years.
“You can’t replace Obamacare with something that’s not going to cover preexisting conditions,” Jacquay explained. “And it’s why, so far, Republicans have been unsuccessful.”
I fear I’m in danger of internal injury if I keep trying to hold back the laughter inspired by thinking like this. Jordan, the GOP has been railing against those regulations for years, even as they bullshitted you into believing they’d maintain them under a “replacement.” If you actually bought into the idea that they’d save you money on insurance while keeping those regs, I’ve got some beachfront property in Nevada going for cheap you might interested in…
And finally, Trump voter Payton Isner said he would like to see negotiations between Republicans and Democrats to forge a permanent solution to dealing with health care in the United States.
“It doesn’t need to be done under the table, and it doesn’t need to be done in the back rooms of Congress,” he said.
$20 says Payton spent the previous 8 years railing against bipartisanship because it would mean the black man in the Oval Office would take the credit for it.

I posted this earlier, but I believe this attitude is going to spread to the point that it really threatens the GOP’s grip on power.
From Andy Bloom at newsmax
The other day I received a call from one of many Republican organizations that regularly solicits donations from me. I almost felt sorry for the guy making the call.
The timbre of my voice and my blood pressure rose as I barked, “No, not a dime. Call back when Congress repeals Obamacare.” Undeterred, the phone solicitor began a pitch for electing a 60-seat Republican U.S. Senate. “We’ve got the House, the Senate, the White House. If not now, they never will. The spigot is turned off.” I exclaimed. Apparently, I don’t understand, “this is complicated.” Actually, I understand. I spent several years as a U.S. House-staffer. Legislating is not easy, at least for Republicans. This (repealing Obamacare), however, remains the central promise all Republicans made campaigning over the past seven years.
Boehner’s prediction is looking more and more right by the day that they’ll never repeal ACA. I think this is a lesson though to those who want the Dems and left to go all in on single payer though.

Fire chief who called Mike Tomlin a ‘n**ger’ resigns — and blames the media for making him look racist https://t.co/kIonJ4Yre3
— Raw Story (@RawStory) September 27, 2017
We start off with the act of contrition:
Washington County fire chief Paul Smith has resigned in wake of his use of a racial slur to refer to Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.
Followed immediately by the excuse-making:
“The media dragged my fire company and township into this as well as my family,” Smith told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in a statement.
The Steelers coach explained to the press that he had decided to keep his team in a stadium tunnel to avoid dealing with the controversy surrounding the American National Anthem. Smith then called Tomlin a “no good N***er” on his Facebook page. He then added “Yes, I said it.”
He also blamed the media for labeling him a racist.
“I am not the racist the media portrays me as,” Smith said.
Paul, I’m gonna level with ya, most white people who I’ve heard insist “I’m not a racist” did so after they did something blatantly racist and were called on it. You don’t vomit forth words like “ni-CLANG” as an insult, much less follow up with “Yes, I said it,” and expect people to believe that you’re “not a racist.” Your buddies at the bar may buy that bullshit, but that’s because they’re fellow closeted racists who laugh at your racist jokes and rant about that “ni-CLANG” who cost them their job while insisting that they’ve a black friend who’s “one of the good ones.”

Trump ’embarrassed and pissed’ after ‘low-energy’ Luther Strange goes down in flames: report https://t.co/JKaghrOGLa
— Raw Story (@RawStory) September 27, 2017
CNN’s Jim Acosta reports that “multiple White House sources” have told his network’s White House team that Trump is “embarrassed and pissed” about Luther Strange’s loss to Roy Moore, the disgraced former judge who believes that the 9/11 terrorist attacks were God’s retribution against the United States for tolerating homosexuality.
Good to see that the White House’s efforts to root out leaking have worked./////
According to CNN, Trump is placing the blame squarely on Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who spent a lot of time and money trying to get Strange elected to the Senate. Trump also reportedly feels that he has been “outdone” by Steve Bannon, the former White House political strategist who campaigned heavily for Moore despite Trump’s embrace of Strange.
CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins subsequently appeared on the network to explain that Trump viewed Strange as a “low-energy” candidate whom he was strong-armed into supporting by the GOP establishment.
And there you have the wingnut excuse going forward: Strange was McConnell’s choice, while Trump was always for Moore and only supported Strange at Yertle’s insistence. It’s not that Strange became toxic after Donny wrapped his bloated orange arms around him, he was always a bad choice and Trump’s endorsement had nothing to do with his loss.
The president quickly deleted all tweets he had posted praising Strange after Moore’s victory in the Republican Alabama Senate primary, and he has vowed to campaign for Moore to help ensure the seat stays in Republican hands.
Considering there’s a Trump tweet for every occasion, I’m sure we’ll soon find one or more tweets of him accusing Obama of being responsible for DNC electoral losses and arguing that endorsement from the man was bad for a candidate’s chances.

re: #242 Belafon

Not to my knowledge, but I’m sure there’s probably something in the archives.
Well we know that Trump violated at least one of the Ten Commandmentss. Someone should ask Moore about that.
Has Bannon been called in to Mueller’s office for a discussion yet? I can’t remember if he has even been asked questions by either the senate or house investigation committees.
There might be a split forming between The Big Don and Grungy Steve. It could be setting up a decent time to apply some heat on Bannon. He could easily turn against Trump to save his own ass. I know I wouldn’t trust that dirt bag.

re: #247 HappyWarrior
I know. Last night was very sad. I hadn’t heard about what happened at Jackson State following Kent State. And of course My Lai. Hugh Thompson was a hero. Makes me sick that the Nixon administration tried to smear the men who sought to report the truth on that.
I’m not watching because I just can’t.
When they discussed Kent State, did they mention the riot on the Ohio State Campus in the spring of 1970 just prior to Kent State?
Many people think that caused Ohio Governor Rhodes to freak out and get mean since the student protesters marched from OSU campus straight down High Street (a little over 2 miles) to the Ohio State House Capitol where they were met by a large police presence.
A few days later Students called a strike to call for some demands from the University. That was to happen on the huge Ohio State Oval at the center of the campus. That turned into a huge confrontation that led to an all out riot and later at night Rhodes called in the Ohio National Guard.
Supposedly, that led to Rhodes and Nixon talking about getting even tougher and then came Kent State where it all blew up. There were rumors that SDS was on campus stirring stuff up. Both politicians may have decided to make Kent State an example of the U.S. getting tough on protests.
(Where are we hearing this again???)
I was a little disappointed reading a few comments from some LGF members on their take on Kent State and the shootings. I won’t get into why as I don’t want to start the same debate wars I have been in since 1970 that can get really heated. Yes, I have heard all types of takes about the students weren’t saints and they had it coming to them.
Everyone saw the results, and not one of those kids killed or maimed had it coming to them. I wonder if Burns mentioned the one kid in the famous photo, Jeffrey Miller, who was directly targeted and shot in the head. There is much speculation that he was one of the kids that ran from the line the students were supposed to keep and either tossed back a gas canister or threw a rock and was seen well enough he could be followed and identified from the hill where the guard stopped and fired. Again, he was shot dead in the face,
What does that say? Well, a lot of people say “He had it coming”
One other thing. Did Burns mention the ROTC building that was burned down was empty and probably would have been torn down later that summer?
I know Kent State was only a part of the whole Vietnam war mess. But it happen in Ohio not far from where I lived as a kid and it was when I was 15 and very impressionable. I will never forget it and I have studied and read about it unlike anything else. I still get pissed off. It was needless.
Anyway here is a link about the OSU riot of 1970. It is covered in a pretty good story at BeachDem’s favorite Ohio political site Plunderbund.

Hey, more nostalgia! I used to work with Tom Jurich at the Athletic Departnment of Northern Arizona University, where he worked briefly in the 1980’s…I found him pretty stupid but good-natured and always seemed to have a very surprised look on his face in any unfamiliar situation and many otherwise familiar ones…

Republicans are chickenhawks on all issues. For example:
They are war mongers but have no desire to serve.
They only care about deficits when Democrats are in charge.
The only use they have for “law and order” is as a weapon to use exclusively on their enemies.
Wow, if Pitino’s job isn’t safe, everybody better keep their heads down.

Yummmm.
I still have my grandmother’s colander and wooden pestle. They are treasures to me!

The only good thing I can say about Segal is he has a hell of a guitar collection - including guitars owned by Albert King, Muddy Waters, Albert Collins, Jimi Hendrix and John Lee Hooker.
He’s not much of a player, but his collection is insane.

Housing market is stalled. Wait until people realize that they can’t write off state and local taxes, and that they will have to surpass $24,000 in home interest payments to get above the new standard deduction proposed in the new “tax cut” proposal by the Republicans. I really think they wrote it with a poison pill in mind, or they are morans.
I hope the housing market comes down soon. Paying $300K+ for a home built during the 80s in north Dallas is a rip-off…especially when it doesn’t even come with a gas stove.

So is Twitter just giving random users 280 character limits?

The lifting of the Jones Act for PR and USVI will likely not offer any significant reduction in current or short term suffering. As noted above in

However, I believe it will, if lifted for a lengthy period, greatly assist the islands in long term recovery & rebuilding.

Not according to Trumpers, because they viewed Obama as weak.
The Jones Act has long been outdated, but is a sop to certain shipping companies.
It should be lifted automatically during a natural disaster, but Trump’s playing games here despite fact that PR requires ocean-going shipping for pretty much everything in bulk.
It’s past time to consider scrapping the Jones Act altogether, but Trump’s already showed why that isn’t likely to happen - certain corps aren’t going to like that. Forget the suffering of millions of people, Trump values the corporations over them.

And meanwhile those athletes that make those coaches rich get notta.
When you meet a member of the Ku Klux Klan
Walk right up and hit him like a natural man;
Take no thought of babies he may have at home
Sympathy`s defamed when used upon his dome.Hit him in the mouth and push his face right in
Knock him down a flight of stairs and pick him up again.
Get your distance from him and then take a running start
Hit him brother, hit him, and please hit the scoundrel hard.Pour some water on him, bring him back to life once more
Think of how he did your folks in the days of long ago;
Make a prayer to heaven for the strength to do the job
Kick him in the stomach, he, a low, unworthy snob.Call your wife and baby out to see you have some fun
Sic your bulldog on him for to see the rascal run
Head him off before he gets ten paces from your door
Take a bat of sturdy oak and knock him down once more. This time you may leave him where he wallows in the sand
A spent and humble member of the Ku Klux Klan.

Just paged a piece on what we’re all likely in for now that Trump is feeling humiliated and defeated on the ACA, on the Alabama race, and (bold prediction) by the fallout from his pointless fight with the NFL. And then I see this Daily Beast piece on how Trump is already going off on Twitter like a tantrum-throwing crybaby: thedailybeast.com
From his meeting last night with GOP leaders:
“According to The Wall Street Journal’s Rebecca Ballhaus, Trump spent much of the dinner ranting about Jeff Sessions having recused himself from the Russia probe. “You could feel it dripping with venom,” a source told Ballhaus. Trump apparently also told attendees he’s happy with how the NFL issue has “really taken off … He was happy — he feels like he’s clearly winning that exchange.”
He’s still treating Sessions like a Punch&Judy doll. Sessions is his go-to punching bag whenever he feels bad about anything.
Christ, Trump really is the alcoholic, violent, psychotic daddy, isn’t he?
Our only hope is that McConnell and McCain and a few of the other old bulls in the Senate start punching back. I think a Rubicon might have been crossed in the past two weeks.

Value of Scholarship < Actual Cost of Attendance
I’ll be honest, I took a couple of $50 handshakes in my life. My parents had no money to give me while in school. And I didn’t have time to work a job that paid enough to matter.
One thing that was a huge help was that I was able to receive a Pell Grant. But that money went to other unpaid incidentals not covered by a scholarship. Gas money to get to the barely paying (summer only) job. Scholarships only covered $30 worth of weekend meals, and that can’t do anything for a 20 year old 200 pound athlete.
Not to sound like college athletes don’t have great opportunities; we all did. But we are still an exploited part of an exploitative system. The system used me. I attempted to use the system for as much as I could get. There are advantages/disadvantages to being an athlete or a regular student. Criticisms of student athletes who criticize the system are akin to the criticisms of NFL players who protest for racial justice. How many reports did you see of NFL “fans” saying the players are Millionaires, they shouldn’t complain. The “fans” don’t wan’t to hear Players express the power and influence they do have, likely due to the melanin content of the vocal. The majority of current and former college players criticizing the NCAA and its exploitative system are also black. Makes one wonder.
Yes the system did exploit us. But we can and are using the fruits of that system(our education) to get back and fight for justice and economic fairness.

Yeah Dean was great. He was a very kind and compassionate man. Another coach I look up to is John Wooden.
Heh—Sarah Palin does as well (except she got her attribution wrong)
As the epigram to Chapter Three, “Drill, Baby, Drill,” Palin assigns the following remarks to the Hall of Fame hoops coach:
Our land is everything to us… I will tell you one of the things we remember on our land. We remember our grandfathers paid for it—with their lives.
Only the quote wasn’t by John Wooden. It was written by a Native American activist named John Wooden Legs in an essay entitled “Back on the War Ponies,” which appeared in a left-wing anthology, We Are the People: Voices from the Other Side of American History, edited by Nathaniel May, Clint Willis, and James W. Loewen.

There are many reasons why tattooing has been blighted in Japan, including the long-standing cultural thinking that getting a tattoo was disrespectful to your parents, because you were defacing the body they had bestowed.
Someone noticed that our parents make our bodies, rather than pretending a god did it, when all our knowledge says it was our parents.
