Video Emerges Showing WH Chief of Staff John Kelly Lied About Rep. Wilson - But He Refuses to Back Down

Politics • Views: 38,320

As the White House flails and spins and lashes out, trying to justify Donald Trump’s stunningly heartless comments to the widow of a fallen soldier, yesterday Chief of Staff John Kelly went in front of the cameras and attacked Rep. Frederica Wilson as an “empty barrel,” and claimed she made a speech about a new FBI field office and took credit for getting the funding for the building. Here are his exact words:

…A congresswoman stood up, and in the long tradition of empty barrels making the most noise, stood up there and all of that and talked about how she was instrumental in getting the funding for that building, and how she took care of her constituents because she got the money, and she just called up President Obama, and on that phone call he gave the money — the $20 million — to build the building. And she sat down, and we were stunned. Stunned that she had done it. Even for someone that is that empty a barrel, we were stunned.

Well, now the Sun-Sentinel has found the video of Rep. Wilson’s speech, and let’s not beat about the bush — John Kelly flat out lied. At no point in her speech does she try to take credit for procuring funding for the building — and she was not even in Congress at the time. (And even if she had made those comments, which she didn’t, what in the world would make this relevant to Trump’s ugly remarks? It’s a pure ad hominem attack.)

A more charitable interpretation of Kelly’s attack on Rep. Wilson might be that he was mistaken; that he misremembered the speech. But then why is he still standing by his false claim despite the very clear video evidence?

UPDATE at 10/20/17 11:46:58 am by Charles Johnson

And now the White House makes this sickening situation even more offensive:

SHS is a terrible person as are Kelly and Trump. Rep. Wilson actually knew Sergeant Johnson’s family and Sgt. Johnson. Their loss was her loss too. Sgt. La David Johnson was more than just a report to her. He was a father, son, mentoree, and someone whose loss she felt personally impacted by. Kelly as far as I’m concerned validated when Rep Guitterez said he disgraced the uniform. He has. And I’m tired of him hiding behind his USMC uniform to run from what a shitty person he is and what an even shittier person he enables.

If that 4 star general is lying, it’s not inappropriate at all and Kelly did lie. Nevermind the fact that it was irrelevant what happened in Miami two years ago, Kelly flat out lied with the hope that no one out there would find footage of Rep Wilson’s speech was actually a very gracious tribute to the fallen FBI agents Grogan and Dove, included heartfelt thanks to colleagues in both parties, and to James Comey. We know the reason why Trump surrounded himself with military men. It’s because he thinks they’re shields from lying.

It would be highly inappropriate for a 4-star General working as the White House Chief of Staff to slander a member of Congress. But here we are.

She shifted it to “comments made at the dedication” from everyone hearing it to only a few who heard the Congresswoman (‘loud talkin’) like an empty barrel.

And who would be those few that heard? Kelly and his imagination most likely. But we are sure to know they can’t be found or they will be people making more excuses that they heard it. A select few for sure.

That was some mighty fine projecting. It almost comes off like a satire. That’s how over the top it is. i would ask why the NRA is involved in this but then again I don’t have to ask because the NRA sold whatever it integrity it may have had years ago to push an agenda of unregulated firearms ownership and to elect only Republicans and not to represent all gun owners regardless of race or political identity.

We took our liberal democracy for granted, and allowed the far right to propagandize enough people to cause the current surge of fascism. The good news is that people who care about American values are now awake and aware of the problem. The crazies are getting slammed on the Internet, so I’m hopeful about the next election.

Actually, no. The only difference between today and days past is instant communications.

There have always been regressive conservatives who wished to take the country backward or tear it down, from the Whiskey Rebellion to the Civil War to the Klan to Jim Crow to the Gilded Age to *well you get the idea here*

Enlightenment ideas, which are liberal values, must constantly be on guard against the long journey into the night.

Not really. This was always lurking beneath the surface, only barely repressed by the psychological confidence white people had in our own institutional supremacy. As many of us saw progress that confidence eroded and this hibernating chauvinistic rage awoke.

(more):

First lady Michelle Obama is making sure that whoever inhabits the White House next doesn’t rip out her iconic vegetable garden — at least not without a big fuss.

On Wednesday afternoon, Obama unveiled a much bigger version of the garden, which uses cement, stone and steel to make it a more permanent fixture on the South Lawn. The updates are seen not just as preserving Obama’s garden — recognized globally as a symbol of local food — but also as a way to dissuade, say, a President Donald Trump from scrapping it the way Ronald Reagan tore out Jimmy Carter’s solar panels after he moved into the White House.

Intresting read by Joy Ann Reid here. I find it hard to argue with this. It’s a good companion piece to Coates’ argument that Trump is our First White President, Joy argues that the seeds of Trump’s victory were planted the day Obama became President and in hindsight, it’s hard to argue with that as a white man.

She was the kind of fearful person who has to have guns to feel safe, and found that they can’t actually protect her, because threats terrify her. Where does she go from there, if she’s locked into an ideology. You’d be miserable too.

Yes America has always had its problems. This country has a long history of spouting its great ideals but never truly living up to them. We have been indoctrinated with American Exceptionalism for generations so our population has a major superiority complex. And since POC have been crapped on throughout our history some in this country will never see us as truly American. Racism is a fabric of this Nation unfortunately and to rid ourselves of it is going to take a lot fight. I believe we became too complacent with the fight. I believe we took signs of progress as we were winning the fight and got lazy.

It will be a long road ahead even with Trump out of office. Trump is not the cause of this he is a symptom of the larger GOP problem that has been going on for quite some time. And even though the GOP has been ethically bankrupt for years the Democrats can’t seem to beat them. This is the problem. How does the Democratic party keep losing ground to these people! It’s hard to sit here and come up with any other answers than incompetency.

Fear motivates far better than hope. But it also helps to have a system that is rigged in favor of resisting change. And then a few decisions, like the SCOTUS allowing gerrymandering for political reasons, and it’s hard Democrats to hold on for too long. Think of 98 and 2016, after Democrats fixed the economy, the party was punished, not rewarded.

It’s because he thinks they’re shields from lying.

one of the things i really like about parts of the internet, LGF especially, is that i have no idea who or what anyone is.

not their “race”, age, gender, height, sexual orientation, health status, what part of the country (usa) they are from, even what country they are in. and so much more.

even name handles arent a sure bet (there’s satire, irony, and sarcasm out there)

sometimes we let stuff slip - accidentally or on purpose and for a moment i might think i just learned something new that fits in with what i thought i already knew about someone.

and then a wonderful thing. i promptly forget. not it’s not alzheimers or even sometimers. its usually just not relevant to who you are and what you stand for re issues, positions and points of view.

that’s what tells me who you all are: how you arrive at the thoughts and decisions and opinions you have.

Teddy Roosevelt. FDR. Jackson. Taft. Hoover. Truman. Nixon. Ford. Carter. Reagan. Clinton. GWB. Obama.

So yeah, the odds are that a president has been subject of an assassination attempt than not. 17 of 45 were subject of assassination attempts (Garfield, Lincoln, McKinley, JFK were assassinated). 37% of presidents have been subject of assassination attempts.

In fact, every president since Nixon has been subject of a domestic assassination attempt.

I was busy with sports last night and didn’t see Maddow as it aired. However, I started seeing things like this online:

So obviously I braced myself as I sat down to watch.

In reality, there was absolutely no “conspiracy mongering” at all.

What I did see was Rachel educating her audience on the region in general, and exploring the addition of Chad to the travel ban in particular. These are both highly worthwhile endeavors that cannot be found elsewhere on TV. She did openly wonder if this might have something to do with Trump’s refusal to speak about 4 dead Americans in Niger. In my book, that is a far cry from a conspiracy theory.

Maddow is not perfect and is a TV personality above anything else. Academics and others can and should be critical of the news media full stop. Maybe just find something more substantive to complain about?

Here is the segment in question in case you missed it and wish to judge for yourself:

Great thing about them: they are all out of sequence so it doesn’t REALLY matter the order in which you read them.

The first three are now bundled together as the “Berlin Noir” trilogy. However, I feel like Kerr has became a better author in the years he took off from the series (and stopped making a few anachronistic mistakes) so I would not necessarily recommend anyone has to start there.

how can you possibly be on a committee of an organization you are not a member of

Here’s the thing, I don’t think anyone in the Trump Administration wishes they had a different job. I don’t buy the “adults in the room” stuff anymore. If they believed it was that bad, they’d have already gone to Ryan and McConnell and told them to pull the trigger on removing the president. They are there because they want to be there.

And they are there because they believe in the “mission”, which is to disassemble the federal government, piece-by-piece, and to raid the Treasury for everything they can get before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.

re: #121 Belafon

I understand all the things the Democrats are up against. Our system in place right now seems to be set up to give the Democrats the short end of the stick. I remember seeing a clip with Barney Frank talking about money in politics and he said something of the sort, would you rather have 100% of the money going to GOP or like it is now where they only get 75% and 25% goes to DNC. I couldn’t believe I heard something so stupid. He was trying to argue that a built in advantage for the right was somehow good for DNC. Since our country is basically a 2 party system the problem our country is facing is that one of those parties is completely bought and paid for and the other party that is supposed to be the counter balance seems to be from their own words only 25% bought and paid for. But that would mean 60% of all our representation is bought and paid for. This is not a both sides argument that plagues our media. Unfortunately one side (GOP) is not saveable. That means the other side (DNC) is the only hope we have of trying to get this country going in the right direction. But to me it seems that the DNC would prefer things stay the same as far as the river of money flowing through Washington. Too many people are making a good living off that money. Nothing in this country will change as long as outright bribery of our politicians is legal. Your views and policy mean absolutely nothing because whatever the money wants to distort, it will.

Sandy Rios at the Values Voter Summit, claimed George Soros crashed the economy in 2008 to get Barack Obama elected.

rightwingwatch.org

“The world is filled with George Soros, and not with his money, but that’s why communism, too, has such a root and has still survived after so many decades—thriving, in fact,” Rios said.

Wildmon said that Soros’ identity as a Jewish atheist meant that he hated God in his heart because atheists live their life without purpose and look towards “nothing.”

“That always explains the difference between Christians/conservatives—they’re not the same, necessarily, as we both know—and liberals/atheists, because they live for today. That’s why they fight so hard,” Rios said.

Wildmon said one would think that atheists “wouldn’t be motivated by much of anything” because they don’t possess any “purpose or meaning in life.” Rios replied that atheist communists like Soros are motivated by Satan.

I used to be in QA. I did the same thing, but I had a co-worker who took it to an extreme. He was dissatisfied that the company was planning on launching their flagship product, feeling that it was far too complex and hadn’t been tested satisfactorily. To that end, he decided to file at least one show-stopping bug every day until they moved the release date. They moved him instead, but it was an amazing run.

re: #248 HappyWarrior

Nope.

Actually, Bernie did officially become a Democrat prior to the primaries, because that was the only way he could legally run as a Democrat in many states.

However, shortly after Trump’s victory, Bernie dropped his Democratic registration and went back to being an “independent” (and, from what I read in a couple of places earlier this year, he had been planning well before the general to drop the Dems like a hot potato as soon as it became convenient, in order to run as a “independent” again in his Senate re-election next year).

He’s such a fuckhead, so in love with having adoring crowds chanting his name that he helped to fuck over the entire country for a generation or more.

Where has our country gone so wrong? I mean I get it, we were never perfect or what we proclaimed ourselves to be but we were better than this.

Decades of resentment based pandering to cranks and bigots by the GOP has led directly to this cesspit of Satan.

re: #282 TedStriker

Actually, Bernie did officially become a Democrat prior to the primaries, because that was the only way he could legally run as a Democrat in many states.

However, shortly after Trump’s victory, Bernie dropped his Democratic registration and went back to being an “independent” (and, from what I read in a couple of places earlier this year, he had been planning well before the election to drop the Dems like a hot potato as soon as it became convenient, in order to run as a independent again in his Senate re-election next year).

He’s such a fuckhead.

Sorry, yeah you’re correct. I knew he had temporarily became a Dem then switched back to Indy. Anyhow, I’m seeing a lot of whining about him. He needs to join or shut up. And this whole “He’s the most popular politician in the country” is bs. He’s popular among white progressives of a certain age. And there’s plenty of us myself including who have no love for him at all since he’s one of the most egocentric and non team playing left wing politicians out there.

Which has turned out to be bs. I haven’t seen him campaign for anyone here in Virginia. He does have plenty of time to do his townhalls that he does as a head start for 2020 but not to actually campaign for the election of other candidates. He endorsed Perriello here for governor and did one measly event. Perriello since he lost to Northam meanwhile has been campaigning for Dems all over the state. The reason why I don’t like Bernie is simple. Bernie wants to make it all about him while disguising his movement as grassroots. He’s just as self absorbed as Trump is. People overlook that because they like his message.

Kristol et al. think open racism, malice etc. will damage the GOP brand, and that’s the only reason they disapprove.

Time will tell if a degeneration of the GOP into an openly hateful, bigoted sewer actually hurts them at the polls. The election of 2016 and the continuing GOP control of Congress and many state houses are discouraging facts.

For instance, “he” in certain circumstances, or even “she.” I’d been friends with lots of gay men and women for many years and thought myself oh so liberated as a straight guy until I started working with a trans person who wished to be referred to as “they.” I was taken aback but I got over it.

In the present case, it’s all about what language they use. Do they call themselves “MAGA girls”? It wouldn’t surprise me. But if not, we shouldn’t. And “catfight” is probably one to be avoided nowadays, along with “black humor” and various other expressions that have previously been regarded as acceptable if not normal. Shakespeare and Chaucer have permanent permission to carry on, but quoting them can occasionally get problematic; and very funny.

The thread starts by noting that Trump came out with an order modifying GW Bush’s order allowing the Department of Transportation to call up reservists of the Coast Guard right after 9/11.

At that time the Coast Guard was still part of DOT, but was moved not too long afterwards to DHS.

Trump’s EO modifies the Bush order to say the Department of Defense can call up the Coast Guard’s reserve. The Coast Guard is not part of the Department of Defense.

He finishes noting these guys have no idea what they’re doing.

I dunno, I ran into this somewhere so I dropped using it. I was blind to its significance. Oops, I wasn’t actually blind, I was, um, thoughtless. Gawd it’s difficult. Remember the old Agatha Christie novel Ten Little n*****s, I mean Ten Little Indians, I mean Ten Little Soldiers, I mean And Then There Were None. I think that was the final title.

‘Dead serious’ Pennsylvania GOP mayoral candidate determined to enact ‘narco bunnies’ plan to sniff out drugs

While many police departments employ K-9 units that are used to sniff out explosives and drugs, one Republican mayoral candidate wants to see bunnies do the work.

It all began when the Amherst, New York police proposed a drug-sniffing bunnies as part of an April Fool’s joke on their Facebook, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. During a Phoenixville, Pennsylvania mayoral forum, GOP nominee Dave Gautreau actually proposed that if he was elected to the Mayor’s office he would find drug-sniffing bunnies for the police department.

Despite snickers, he wasn’t kidding and doubled down.

“I was dead serious,” he said. “I would not make a joke about a rabbit if I did not believe it to be true.”

Proving yet again that Republicans have no sense of the absurd.

To return to the earlier Kelly discussion, someone here probably made this argument: our memories are very fragile. Eyewitness testimony is notorious for being inaccurate, although jurors place a lot of credence in it. I doubt that Kelly realized he was lying; this is what he recalled after 2 years. The problem was not that his memory was wrong but that he felt a need to make these comments about her in the first place. It was inexcusable to dredge up that past event and to characterize her in such insulting terms. It just confirms that anyone working for Trump is contaminated by his dishonesty and racism.
