AARP sent me an email about Social Security, and it seems the maximum monthly income for participants is now $1,420, before SSA penalizes you for making too much money. I make less than $1,420 in China.
I turn 62 this year. Full retirement age for me would be 66y4m. So, do I start collecting now and still work in China? Or wait until I’m 65, when China tells me I can’t work here anymore?

The written exam was very heavy on history, politics, geography and economics, as I recall. My degree was in lit, but I studied enough of the other subjects to be able to answer most of the questions correctly. But jeez, it was a brutal test. Three hours, then lunch, then another three hours. Like two GREs back to back.

On a tangential subject, when I was in the Navy I decided to seek out a radiotelephone license. (That was back in the days when there were three classes of license.)
I started the examination for 3rd (required for DJs and other radio operators such as air traffic controllers), and slugged my way through the 1st class exam, followed by the radar endorsement, all in one sitting.
The proctor for the FCC at that test said he’d never seen a person take all the tests in one slug, and most engineers failed the 1st class test at least once. (In fact, the day I took all those exams there were a number of engineers in the room. I felt a bit of probably inappropriate pride at slugging through each test while they struggled and failed.)

TBH I hardly use it at all, though I can see how it would help in networking for professionals. I was going to post my resume on LinkedIn when I lost my teaching job last year, but didn’t need to, as I found a new job in short order.
As for economic strata, there are a lot of folks in LinkedIn who are at the bottom of the corporate ladders trying to claw their way up. Government types, too. The really well-to-do don’t need LinkedIn for networking. They have their country clubs for that.

Pretty good winter storm last night. Cool drifts all over the street and folk’s yards. They say we had 4”. I just got back in from shoveling my walkways and with the drifting some of the areas I had to remove were a good foot deep. Pretty hard to shovel with the coating of ice under it. Columbus seems to have done a decent job with the streets as the county is only a level 1 alert. All the counties around us though are level 2 and the ones in the hilly country southeast along the river are level 3.

To be fair, this is typical for this time of the year - in fact, we’re actually a little bit warm. Mid-January is typically with highs (yes, highs!) in the -5 to -10 degrees F range, and lows dipping down to -40 degrees.

So for me, it was how long after 82 would I live. And would a few hundred extra per month after 83 really change my life at that point. Experts agree that there is no real “formula”, the decision depends on so many factors other than just how long you think you will live. I recommend spending time on line reading articles from sources like Kiplinger, Vanguard to gain an understanding of the various components. I chose to take SS at 62 because I would prefer to retain my IRA accounts and no longer work. If I liked my job and had little IRA money, my calculus might be different.

I am pretty sure I will not be retiring in the USA, but in Central or South America. I already speak Spanish, and living there would be more convenient for visiting family than, say, Thailand or Malaysia. I have visited both, and enjoyed the experience, but flying 14+ hours to visit my kids and grandkid(s) takes the luster off the exotic locales. Plus, the Thai government is fucked up. Malaysia is a little better.

The break even calculation, the amount of SS income I would get between 62 and 66 4 months, it would take until I was 82 to “get that back” from the higher monthly benefit I would get at 66 4 months. So for me, it was how long after 82 would I live. And would a few hundred extra per month after 83 really change my life at that point. Experts agree that there is no real “formula”, the decision depends on so many factors other than just how long you think you will live. I recommend spending time on line reading articles from sources like Kiplinger, Vanguard to gain an understanding of the various components. I chose to take SS at 62 because I would prefer to retain my IRA accounts and no longer work. If I liked my job and had little IRA money, my calculus might be different.
This is the kind of calculation I need to do. I like my work, but having the extra money now would allow me to pack in more travel before my body starts to call it quits.
Like I said above, I have the luxury of taking my time to consider this issue.

My point was to both work (since I make less than the maximum allowed) and collect SS benefits. Essentially, two incomes. But Joe Bacon, our local Social Security guru, says working abroad may complicate matters.
I was not suggesting that I leave my job.

Yes, living outside the U.S. gives one a lot of options (not so much in Normay). A lot of focus is often placed on the income side of the ledger, but not as much on the expense. Reduce expenses/have more money.

A few months ago, I was talking to my dad about financial stuff. He may be a wingnut, but in financial matters, he is very prudent. He told me his one regret was that he had messed with his retirement account early in his career, presumably to either make some ends meet or to pay off something, he wasn’t explicit. I’ve been very strict on leaving the money in my retirement account alone so that I wouldn’t have to rely on Social Security like Mrs. Fish’s parents do.

One lives in our spare bedroom when he’s home (he’s in college in Austin), the other plays for the Nigerian National team, a fact he is extremely proud of. Those two are my sons. Period. They will always be our sons and big brothers to my boys. It’s not even the tiniest question.

Yep. My parents got a nice 940GL from a friend who lost her ability to drive and soon after they sold it to me. It was nothing but trouble: two transmissions, constant leaks, electrical problems, you name it. Fortunately, somebody hit me and the damage was more than the car was worth. I was forced to finally give up and take a loan for a newer car.

One of my best friends growing up was from Peru. It didn’t matter to me where he was from, he was just my friend. Same thing with my brother, his best friend who is also his daughter’s Godfather is African-American. We really never saw their backgrounds. They were just our friends. Even in the days where my brother and I fought like dogs in our teenage years, I always admired him because he honestly never thought less of someone because of their race or origin. He just wanted people he had common ground with whether that was music or today an appreciation of nature. No surprise that today he is married to an immigrant and makes friends whenever he travels globally.

I’m in a discussion with a wingnut on another board about Trump’s comments, and to my total lack of surprise, her position (in keeping with Faux) is that Trump’s sin was speaking his mind around Democrats because he should have known they’d tell the press. So I pointed out to her that he asked aloud why we’re not encouraging more immigration from white-majority nations like Norway, to which she tried the lame excuse that Norway has a lot of college grads that we’d want in a “merit-based” system like Trump’s asking for.
And so I took the time to quote from the LA Times about how the percentage of immigrants from African nations that have college degrees is not only higher than the US, it’s actually higher than those from Norway. She hasn’t responded back yet, but when she does I expect to get something about “chain migration,” refugees, or “criminal aliens” despite all three being cited after his comments went public as “what he really meant.”

One more anecdotal story to add to your mulling docket. I was still making pretty decent money in my 60s, and would have owed money back, so I waited till the full amount age. That was the deciding factor—I didn’t “need” the SS $ at 62, so I figured I’d go for the higher amount later on. Now, Medicare I applied for as soon as I could, because being self-employed I had really crappy, really expensive individual insurance.

We are all appalled by the corporate tax law drop to 15.5%, and the huge hole that helps to blow in our national debt. It seems like that is not the worst of it: there is a loophole (related to a shithole?) that could allow a rate as low as 8%, and if that is used, that hole in the deficit is going to get a LOT bigger.

We live in an area of Houston with many, many African immigrants. 8 of the 11 players on my husband’s basketball team this year are African. This is not unusual.
Over the past 20 years, there have been 2 kids that we genuinely would have adopted. Want an example of how inexpensive Natural Gas is? AEP Energy is my natural gas supplier. I also have them as my electric supplier too.
They buy such large quantities of natural gas in their now-converted-to-gas generation plants they can offer it to others at rates the other suppliers can’t touch.
And they also allowed me to declare my electric will come from their alternate green energy division using wind and solar…no extra cost. They just ask that you declare it so they can record it being used for marketing and political purposes.
