I wanted to take issue with a tweet in the last thread. Trump isn’t creating an unaccountable presidency without help. The GOP is enabling it.

It will be up to us to put an end to it.

Ambassadorships are political appointments anyway. Most ambassadors are posted by the incoming president. While some serve over several administrations, most only serve until a new president is elected.

Especially if the television or radio media ask this now-resigned ambassador to come on and explain why he did so.

Probably no one knew or cared who the US Ambassador to Panama was. If he gets a bunch of airtime, a whole lot more people will know who he is and why he quit.

[John] Feeley’s departure had been communicated to State Department officials on Dec. 27 [my emphasis] and was not a response to Trump’s alleged use of the word “shithole” to describe Haiti and African countries at a meeting on Thursday, U.S. officials said.

Trump denies using the term.

Feeley, one of the department’s Latin America specialists and among its senior most officers, made clear that he had come to a place where he no longer felt able to serve under Trump.

“As a junior foreign service officer, I signed an oath to serve faithfully the president and his administration in an apolitical fashion, even when I might not agree with certain policies,” Feeley said, according to an excerpt of a resignation letter read to Reuters on Friday.

“My instructors made clear that if I believed I could not do that, I would be honor bound to resign. That time has come.”

In Mr. Trump’s (at best) insensitive remark to the woman of Korean decent, a bit got buried about that.

nbcnews.com

At a March meeting with members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Trump asked the elected officials if they personally knew just one member of his incoming cabinet — Ben Carson — according to two people in the room.

Carson, the only black member of Trump’s Cabinet, had never served in Congress and spent his career as a surgeon. Trump found that surprising that no one said they knew him, the attendees said.

During that same meeting, a member relayed to Trump that potential welfare cuts would harm her constituents, “not all of whom are black.” The president replied: “Really? Then what are they?”

I had reasonably good Spanish at the time, and mediocre Portuguese. I probably could have squeaked by with those and my BA. I gave up consideration of the foreign service after I realized I could teach abroad, and have the international experience I wanted without all the government requirements.

The written exam was very heavy on history, politics, geography and economics, as I recall. My degree was in lit, but I studied enough of the other subjects to be able to answer most of the questions correctly. But jeez, it was a brutal test. Three hours, then lunch, then another three hours. Like two GREs back to back.

On a tangential subject, when I was in the Navy I decided to seek out a radiotelephone license. (That was back in the days when there were three classes of license.)

I started the examination for 3rd (required for DJs and other radio operators such as air traffic controllers), and slugged my way through the 1st class exam, followed by the radar endorsement, all in one sitting.

The proctor for the FCC at that test said he’d never seen a person take all the tests in one slug, and most engineers failed the 1st class test at least once. (In fact, the day I took all those exams there were a number of engineers in the room. I felt a bit of probably inappropriate pride at slugging through each test while they struggled and failed.)

The tweeter should note that during the 1800s, Norway and Sweden *were* shitholes in many respects, overpopulated with insufficient arable land for farming, very strict class divisions, and formidable state churches. So, it’s no wonder tens of millions of Norwegians and Swedes came to the USA (and Canada).

Considering the snow you have at your ski resorts, you’d probably do better to ski here at Chimney Rock or Scotts Bluff National Monument.

From the photos you’ve shown of the abysmal snowfall in Colorado, it would seem we have much more.

My wife and I will be gracing your fair state on January 24 and 25, when I have to go to Denver to have my car serviced at the Mercedes dealer in Westminster. You’ve been warned.

OT, and a personal gripe. If unfamiliar LinkedIn users would really like to connect with me, you think they’d bother to send a message or work through our mutual connections first. I’ve got two invites here from people I don’t know at all from the ESL universe. LinkedIn is not supposed to be flipping Facebook. If you don’t know me personally or through some other social media, just don’t bother trying to make a connection. I will ignore you.

I used to get LinkedIn messages until I told the company to cease-and-desist.

It seems that LinkedIn sends out spam from E-mail lists they acquire from third parties.

I used to get messages from all sorts of people in fields unrelated to anything I ever did saying they wanted to connect with me on the site, would I please sign up.

I’ve got mine restricted only to people with connections to my existing connections, but none of them bother with getting intros from those existing connections. I treat them like a cold call, as in I don’t pick up the phone and/or I don’t engage in conversation. I’ll check their bios for possible connections from workplaces or schools, and if there are none, I ignore them. If they want to connect with me that badly, they can send me a message or find me elsewhere on the Web.

I don’t have a LinkedIn account and never did. Nevertheless, LinkedIn “connexions” used to fill my E-mail box (asking me to sign up for the service) until I wrote them and told them to take me off their list.

I got a letter back with a “you’ll be sorry because if we block your E-mail you can never sign up.” Good. I don’t want to sign up. I could not care less about LinkedIn - and the vast majority of people on that service are far above my economic stratum anyway.

TBH I hardly use it at all, though I can see how it would help in networking for professionals. I was going to post my resume on LinkedIn when I lost my teaching job last year, but didn’t need to, as I found a new job in short order.

As for economic strata, there are a lot of folks in LinkedIn who are at the bottom of the corporate ladders trying to claw their way up. Government types, too. The really well-to-do don’t need LinkedIn for networking. They have their country clubs for that.

99
freetoken  Jan 12, 2018 • 11:52:21pm

Symphony No. 3 (Górecki)

The Symphony No. 3, Op. 36, also known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs (Polish: Symfonia pieśni żałosnych), is a symphony in three movements composed by Henryk Górecki in Katowice, Poland, between October and December 1976. […]

A solo soprano sings Polish texts in each of the three movements.[2] The first is a 15th-century Polish lament of Mary, mother of Jesus, the second a message written on the wall of a Gestapo cell during World War II, and the third a Silesian folk song of a mother searching for her son killed by the Germans in the Silesian uprisings.[3] The first and third movements are written from the perspective of a parent who has lost a child, and the second movement from that of a child separated from a parent. The dominant themes of the symphony are motherhood and separation through war.

‘Safest car in the world’ scored nearly perfect in crash test

The Volvo XC60 is the safest car money can buy, according to latest crash tests.

The large family SUV scored a full five stars on the Euro NCAP ratings - and nearly hit 100 percent in two categories.

The $40,000 car was praised for its protection of passengers in a head-on crash and a classic side smash.

Front and side airbags meant dummies suffered very little impact with the bulky structure of the SUV absorbing the impact.

Passengers were unlikely to suffer whiplash, too, thanks to clever seatbelt tech that stops the neck from snapping forward.

The 98 percent adult occupant rating topped any other car tested in 2017 and the 87 percent for child protection was one of the highest on record, too.

Morning!

Pretty good winter storm last night. Cool drifts all over the street and folk’s yards. They say we had 4”. I just got back in from shoveling my walkways and with the drifting some of the areas I had to remove were a good foot deep. Pretty hard to shovel with the coating of ice under it. Columbus seems to have done a decent job with the streets as the county is only a level 1 alert. All the counties around us though are level 2 and the ones in the hilly country southeast along the river are level 3.

Okay…with that, I am now ready for winter to be over. You hear that Mom Nature? Cut it out!

Only if it works! I bypassed Volvo for that reason. Like I said, they’re great cars when you get a good one, truly top of the line. But they have major quality issues and a car that won’t start or run is worthless if you depend on a car.

AARP sent me an email about Social Security, and it seems the maximum monthly income for participants is now $1,420, before SSA penalizes you for making too much money. I make less than $1,420 in China.

I turn 62 this year. Full retirement age for me would be 66y4m. So, do I start collecting now and still work in China? Or wait until I’m 65, when China tells me I can’t work here anymore?

Decisions, decisions.

Anyone have advice?

How’s your health?

If you wait for full retirement, you get more per month than if you start at 62. If you expect to live past 70, it’s worth waiting.

Trump has failed to fill many appointed positions so the role is filled by career civil servants. Losing those people can damage this country.

Anyone who stops working for trump has my full support. An ambassador must support the current government/administration. For many that must be near impossible at this point in time.

Australia doesn’t have a US ambassador - whether this is because no-one will work for trump or because he has deliberately left the position vacant as an insult to the current Oz PM, I have yet to determine. Both could be true.

It’s supposed to creep up above 0 degrees F by the afternoon, but we are definitely in another cold snap for most of the next week. To be fair, this is typical for this time of the year - in fact, we’re actually a little bit warm. Mid-January is typically with highs (yes, highs!) in the -5 to -10 degrees F range, and lows dipping down to -40 degrees.

The break even calculation, the amount of SS income I would get between 62 and 66 4 months, it would take until I was 82 to “get that back” from the higher monthly benefit I would get at 66 4 months. So for me, it was how long after 82 would I live. And would a few hundred extra per month after 83 really change my life at that point. Experts agree that there is no real “formula”, the decision depends on so many factors other than just how long you think you will live. I recommend spending time on line reading articles from sources like Kiplinger, Vanguard to gain an understanding of the various components. I chose to take SS at 62 because I would prefer to retain my IRA accounts and no longer work. If I liked my job and had little IRA money, my calculus might be different.

The report spelt the doctor’s name wrong, didn’t specifically say it was from the doctor - which Rachel pointed out in her show. The report came from the White House, not from the doctor.

This is why the current model of adversarial politics pisses me off so much. The GOP and the evangelicals have spent so much time and energy building up to making the Democrats the enemy, and this is the end result - policy is determined purely on what makes the enemy mad.

Absolutely terrifying. Too many people out there reveal hatred and prejudice if they think you are not a member or a supporter of an oppressed group. Too many in the South still have the same attitudes as prior generations; and too many Northern whites share this view. There is something very wrong with this country; Obama had given me real hope that Trump snatched away.

Oh, to be 62 again…sounds nice.

I am pretty sure I will not be retiring in the USA, but in Central or South America. I already speak Spanish, and living there would be more convenient for visiting family than, say, Thailand or Malaysia. I have visited both, and enjoyed the experience, but flying 14+ hours to visit my kids and grandkid(s) takes the luster off the exotic locales. Plus, the Thai government is fucked up. Malaysia is a little better.

OMG. It is not surprising, is it? But still shocks one to the core.

I _was_ heartened to see that NYT editorial board really slamming DT as a racist, bigot and liar, and the comments were strengthening, too. This one got me:

jimbo Guilderland, NY 2 hours ago
People voted for Trump because they weren’t being heard. They had no voice. And the rest of us needed to sit down and have a dialogue with them to listen to their point of view. Well I, for one, have certainly heard enough. It’s not like Trump’s base shrinks because of what he says and does. Their leader is expressing their wishes. Otherwise the support for him would decline, but it does not. Look at the response from people like Paul Ryan. “Not helpful” ? That’s the best you can do, Mr. Ryan? That’s as forceful a response as you can muster? Do you call the child molesters in your district “unkind”? Others like Cotton and Perdue do the see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil every time. They lie to cover up for Trump. Being Christians their response to a sin is to downplay the significance of the behavior. No need to repent. “Nothing much we can recall happened here”. Well I see no need to listen to the “unheard” anymore. I hear you. I understand exactly what you want . So when your heroes are voted out, I hope you get the response to your chance to be heard LOUD AND CLEAR. Because the response IS coming. And you can cover your ears like Cotton and Perdue, but the answer is still going to be the same. ENOUGH.

If SSA increased payments due to inflation, both early and full retirees would get adjust, so no difference. If for some reason they adjust full and not early, then yes. Off the top of my head.
On the issue of losing SS due to making too much income during early retirement, you don’t lose it. At full retirement it is calculated back in to your benefit. See this document, info near bottom on page 6.

Same thing with my brother, his best friend who is also his daughter’s Godfather is African-American. We really never saw their backgrounds. They were just our friends. Even in the days where my brother and I fought like dogs in our teenage years, I always admired him because he honestly never thought less of someone because of their race or origin. He just wanted people he had common ground with whether that was music or today an appreciation of nature. No surprise that today he is married to an immigrant and makes friends whenever he travels globally.

Barefoot Grin  Jan 13, 2018 • 8:36:11am

I came across a 1971 thesis from an Atlanta University student call “The Condition of the Negro In Meriwether Vindicator, 1873-1910. Of course, the imperative to exclude black citizens from politics was one of the main things that propelled the rise of white supremacy movements at that time (when Confederate monuments were also popping up all over. But this caught my eye:

Another argument used to justify lynching was the fact that they were dealing with a new Negro. Many whites felt that the new Negroes, who never knew the bonds of slavery or were slaves only as children, had neither love or respect for the white race. They seemingly had “no truck”, so to speak, for this type of Negro.

Editor Henry H. Reviii, in the beginning of his famous “Fireside Flashes” gave this excerpt on what was soon to be called the new Negro. His statement exemplified the thinking of the average white man in Meriwether County and throughout the South.

“The ante-bellum—the oldtime negro is rapidly passing and will soon be extinct. His passage from the earthly stage severs the tie that binds the affection of the South to the Negro. The modern buck with his smattering of education, lawlessness and hatred of the whites, and the ebony-hued female with her total lack of moral chastity, and dislike of the superior race, excite an emotion in the Caucasian breast—the antithesis of that entertained for the oldtime Negro.
The state ought to appropriate a sum of money to procure a master to chisel out of sable marble, a true type of the negro of the old South, to be placed in the capital of Georgia. The devotion of the Southern white man for colored mammies and uncles of the olden time will follow the last one of the class into the great beyond.”

The editor, like most white men of that day, could not understand what was taking place before their eyes. He could not understand that
this was a New Negro.

The thesis introduces the idea that the generational shift meant more blacks were appearing without having experienced slavery and the psychological habits that might have come with it. It was essential to suppress them through disenfranchisement, terror, inferior education—any way possible.

I’m in a discussion with a wingnut on another board about Trump’s comments, and to my total lack of surprise, her position (in keeping with Faux) is that Trump’s sin was speaking his mind around Democrats because he should have known they’d tell the press. But that he’s right that the countries named are “shitholes” and the comments were totally not racist.

So I pointed out to her that he asked aloud why we’re not encouraging more immigration from white-majority nations like Norway, to which she tried the lame excuse that Norway has a lot of college grads that we’d want in a “merit-based” system like Trump’s asking for.

And so I took the time to quote from the LA Times about how the percentage of immigrants from African nations that have college degrees is not only higher than the US, it’s actually higher than those from Norway. She hasn’t responded back yet, but when she does I expect to get something about “chain migration,” refugees, or “criminal aliens” despite all three being cited after his comments went public as “what he really meant.”

We fucked things up in El Salvador during the Reagan years because Reagan and his team knew little about the people in Latin America and nor did they really care, they just cared about sticking it to the Soviets. If you worship the altar of Reagan, shut the hell up about people coming from “shitholes”, your favorite President supported a lot of these policies that have hurt these countries. And Haiti and I appreciate Katz pointing this out to me because I did not know this, nearly every major power refused to trade with them after their independence from the French and they spent many years paying off the French government. Too much of white America has no idea or worse no desire to learn about the history of the countries around us. Maybe if we did, we’d understand why things are the way they are.

re: #210 Targetpractice

I pretty much without calling out names called out the Trumpers I know to defend the bullshit. Crickets.

America is the land of opportunity. We are supposed to WELCOME people from shithole countries. He may be right - maybe they are shitholes; I wouldn’t know, I’ve never been there and I’ll admit I am not globally cognizant enough to make that determination. But just saying that people shouldn’t come here because their country isn’t rich and fabulous like the United States, that’s offensive to the very core of American ideals. We welcome EVERYBODY, no matter what (well, except people that want to blow us up), in order to give everyone a chance at the life they desire.

The second half of the 20th century was spent by a lot of Western powers trying to regain/retain their empires and punishing (politically, economically, & militarily) all countries that broke away from their rule. And we only exacerbated the matter by supporting various despotic regimes in order to spread our influence globally, proclaiming to do it in the name of “freedom” and “liberty” as we were shoveling money into the coffers of dictators. Now we dub our past victims “developing countries” and play dumb about why its so hard for them to get with the program and act like Europe or North America.

Woodward accused of killing Bernstein.

A friend of slain pre-med student Blaze Bernstein was arrested Friday on suspicion of homicide in the death of the University of Pennsylvania sophomore who went missing for a week before his body was discovered in a shallow grave near a Foothill Ranch park.

Samuel Lincoln Woodward, 20, was taken into custody Friday shortly after driving from his home in Newport Beach, said Orange County Undersheriff Don Barnes during a press conference hours later. He had been under surveillance, and a mile and a half into his drive, he was stopped and apprehended.

I’m grateful that I have the ability to consider options. Many people my age don’t have a choice, because of lack of employment or health issues. I have a job with bennies, a nest egg, and good health. So I can take my time to mull over the decision.

One more anecdotal story to add to your mulling docket. I was still making pretty decent money in my 60s, and would have owed money back, so I waited till the full amount age. That was the deciding factor—I didn’t “need” the SS $ at 62, so I figured I’d go for the higher amount later on. Now, Medicare I applied for as soon as I could, because being self-employed I had really crappy, really expensive individual insurance.

We live in an area of Houston with many, many African immigrants. 8 of the 11 players on my husband’s basketball team this year are African. This is not unusual.

Over the past 20 years, there have been 2 kids that we genuinely would have adopted. One lives in our spare bedroom when he’s home (he’s in college in Austin), the other plays for the Nigerian National team, a fact he is extremely proud of. Those two are my sons. Period. They will always be our sons and big brothers to my boys. It’s not even the tiniest question.

Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires are in it. You’ll have to sit through a half an hour of other fantastic musicians and songwriters (accompanied by Ry Cooder, who is the best one of them all, IMHO) before you get to them. You poor thing.

We are all appalled by the corporate tax law drop to 15.5%, and the huge hole that helps to blow in our national debt. It seems like that is not the worst of it: there is a loophole (related to a shithole?) that could allow a rate as low as 8%, and if that is used, that hole in the deficit is going to get a LOT bigger.

Want an example of how inexpensive Natural Gas is? AEP Energy is my natural gas supplier. I also have them as my electric supplier too.

They buy such large quantities of natural gas in their now-converted-to-gas generation plants they can offer it to others at rates the other suppliers can’t touch.

And they also allowed me to declare my electric will come from their alternate green energy division using wind and solar…no extra cost. They just ask that you declare it so they can record it being used for marketing and political purposes.
