BREAKING: Trump Was Planning to Fire Robert Mueller Last June, Until White House Counsel McGahn Threatened to Resign

Politics • Views: 40,640

Wow. At the Washington Post and the New York Times tonight: Trump moved to fire Mueller in June, bringing White House counsel to the brink of leaving.

President Trump sought the firing of Robert S. Mueller III last June, shortly after the special counsel took over the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, and he backed off only after White House Counsel Donald F. McGahn threatened to resign over the move.

The extraordinary showdown was confirmed by two people familiar with the episode, which was first reported by the New York Times.

McGahn did not deliver his resignation threat directly to Trump, but was serious about his threat to leave, according to a person familiar with the episode.

Why is it coming out now?

I got a feeling that the Republicans have no further use for Trump after he signed the Tax bill.

Now that they got that he has outlived his usefulness.

Perhaps. That would make sense. But several Republicans in Congress are working very hard to protect Trump (Nunes, Perdue, Cotton, Johnson, etc.) so perhaps not.

From a comment at the advice referenced article:

Not only that, but the Martin Act gives the New York State Attorney General broad authority over any entity in New York State that solicits and manages funds from other investors. Schneiderman could literally seize all of Trump’s assets and leave the entire family penniless.

The Martin Act is the reason that Mueller filed financial charges originally, because those charges would keep the suspects in place, and provide an easy lateral to Schneiderman in the event that Trump tried to interfere with the investigation using pardons.

Schneiderman is Mueller’s hammer. If Trump tries to fire Mueller, or tries to pardon Manafort or Flynn, then don’t be surprised if senior members of the Trump organization staff -including Donald Jr. and Eric- end up being led out of Trump Tower by New York State Troopers before the day is over.

Innocent men don’t usually try to fire the people investigating them if no crimes have been committed.

Something to bear in mind going forward: McGahn’s attorney is not only representing him, but is also representing Rinsed Prius and Steve Bannon. And it’s unethical for a lawyer to represent multiple clients whose legal arguments contradict one another. So if McGahn has turned evidence and is working with Mueller, then Prius and Bannon would have to be singing the same tune in order for his attorney to also be representing them.

In fact, it may be also why Jefferson Beauregard would not talk with Trump about what questions Mueller asked or what he told him, as Mueller probably made it clear without saying aloud that he has enough to send the Keebler Elf to prison without his testimony. So the more he cooperates, the better the odds that he’ll get a favorable deal.

WTF?
Nutella ‘riots’ spread across French supermarkets

A discount on Nutella has led to violent scenes in a chain of French supermarkets, as shoppers jostled to grab a bargain on the sweet spread.

Intermarché supermarkets offered a 70% discount on Nutella, bringing the price down from €4.50 (£3.90) to €1.40.

But police were called when people began fighting and pushing one another.

“They are like animals. A woman had her hair pulled, an elderly lady took a box on her head, another had a bloody hand,” one customer told French media.

CNN has been really interesting tonight. They have had a few Trumpistas, including Mooch (what a boob), but none have been given any traction whatsoever. Shut. Down. After today, McConnell at best looks like a fool and at worst looks complicit in covering up an attempted act of obstruction.

Most Trump voters are still with him and still fanatics. They really believe the “Deep State” nonsense, that Hillary and Obama are the ones headed for prison, as well as Mueller and his team.

They want an autocrat who can solve all our problems, and for some bizarre reason, they see Trump as that man. Heaven knows what they will do when they discover that their version of reality is actually fantasy and Mueller actually presents charges that demand impeachment. Of course, Nunes, Gowdy, and the Republican House will not comply and will still insist on Trump’s innocence. This will not end well for our nation.

Only when it comes to actually helping people. When it comes to controlling women’s bodies or preventing gays from enjoying the legal protections of marriage he’s all for theocracy.

The most generous interpretation I can muster for Falwell’s position is that he thinks it’s somehow important for “christians” to make their government shit all over poor people because otherwise they wouldn’t have as many opportunities to be seen conducting performative displays of individual charity.

and again: we don’t need Mueller: there is enough evidence of blatant disregard of the Emoluments act, clear cases of interest and obstruction of justice.

Congress could act but refuses to.

Mueller’s job is to produce enough incontrovertible evidence that Congress is forced to act.

Which is why GOP hacks see it as their job to discredit Mueller.

Humbling Infographic Reveals 20 Writing Mistakes Even Native Speakers Make

There’s something hugely amusing about a spelling error in this infographic. Take a chance; find it!

Did not discover anything…give us a hint.

I generally pay little attention to Internet spelling and grammar, it is often done on the fly or on the toilet or wherever, and usually in the midst of multi-tasking. It falls in the gap between spoken and written English, to which I apply separate standards.

But I am bothered when BBC articles contain dangling participles and spelling mistakes.

Perhaps. That would make sense. But several Republicans in Congress are working very hard to protect Trump (Nunes, Perdue, Cotton, Johnson, etc.) so perhaps not.

They can’t ditch Trump because the base would turn on them and the mid-term Democratic wave would urn into a tsunami. It will take a Democratic Congress to impeach Trump.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. We’ve got reports Trump’s inner circle are lying to Trump to keep him from firing Mueller (who he’s wanted to fire since essentially day one of the investigation last June), but has been talked out of doing so by his Counsel because it would cause a constitutional crisis - not that Trump knows or cares.

Trump’s mindset is that he’s immune and above the law and that he can do whatever he likes because he won and that government is exactly like how he runs his businesses.

Neither of these things are true.

He’s not above the law.

Government is not run like a business, let alone one of Trump businesses.

Government has accountability to the people, including specific accountability under the law to Congress, the judiciary, and Trump specifically took an oath to uphold the Constitution.

What we’re seeing is Trump violating that oath daily, and his staff/counsel are lying to him to keep him from further breaking the law.

The intent to break the law is there. He fired Comey because of the investigation, and this is more proof of intent behind the firing (corroborating his own actions/words about firing Comey because of the investigation).

All Fox can do is spew nonsensical ravings from Hannity about deep state, Clinton, etc., and Fox and Friends regurgitates what Trump says about deep state, Clinton and Fake news.

It’s a circle jerk of agitprop - and it is a feedback loop whose primary consumer is Trump himself, but all the Fox viewers are being misled into thinking that there’s nothing to the Mueller investigation, but the Clinton investigations that went on for years and yielded nothing should continue because indictments are around the corner.

Mueller’s already gotten indictments and guilty pleas in just a few short months - and we haven’t even gotten through the first round of interviews with all the principals. There will be further interviews to be sure.

That’s separate from the ongoing Congressional investigations, but as we also know, Nunes, Chaffetz, and other GOPers have been running interference on behalf of Trump and may find themselves on the wrong side of the law too.

Let’s talk about pleasure. I keep hearing a particular gripe about this cultural shift, and maybe you have too. Some people have been calling this movement Puritanical or a return to Victorian values, where men can’t behave or speak sexually around dainty, delicate, fragile women. To these people I want to say:

The current system is Puritanical. Maybe men can say and do whatever they want, but women cannot. The current system inhibits women from expressing our desires, wants and needs, from seeking our pleasure. Let me tell you about my own experience:

Trump seems to think he can get everyone who serves under him to sign a lifetime NDA.

Government is accountable, but right now Congress is unresponsive. There is more than enough evidence to bring up conflict of interest, emoluments clause violations and obstruction of justice charges.

Mueller’s goal is to bring so much incontrovertible evidence to light that Congress is compelled to act or be seen as complicit.

Hence the strategy of impugning the the reputation of Mueller, the FBI and the entire domestic intelligence and law enforcement community.

Trump: I’m a huge backer of law enforcement.
Trump: The FBI is deep state conspiring against me; I must purge it and put in people I know are loyal to me personally.

The more Trump and the GOP act, the more they’re breaking the law - and their oaths of office. The problem, as you point out, is that the GOP control Congress and they are unresponsive and refuse to hold Trump accountable for his criminal acts and violations of his oath of Office. In doing so, they too are violating their oaths of office.

The only way through this logjam is to flush out the GOP in November, because I think even if Mueller has Trump on tape taking cash payments from Russians and getting intel from Putin himself on Clinton, the GOP and their backers will still think this is not nearly as serious as Clinton and Pizzagate or Uranium One or Benghazi or emails.

It’s neck-and-neck, to be honest - way too close to call. Personally, I think that however wins, it’ll be by an exceedingly thin margin, but you never know.

I am totally old school when it comes to women. My dad died when I was young, so I was the “man of the house” with my older sister and mom.

Women were always people to be respected and protected and although I certainly love flirting, I cannot begin to think of forcing myself on a woman who is not receptive or reciprocal. What the fuck is so difficult about that?

Who can argue with that logic?

Oprah Says She Doesn’t ‘Have The DNA To Be President’

Oprah Winfrey said she has no interest in running for president in 2020 because she doesn’t have the “DNA” for it.

“I’ve always felt very secure and confident with myself in knowing what I could do and what I could not,” Winfrey told InStyle magazine. “And so it’s not something that interests me. I don’t have the DNA for it.”

She recalled in the interview published online Thursday how her long-time friend, Gayle King, an anchor at “CBS This Morning,” would text her messages from people encouraging her to run.

“Gayle … has been calling me regularly and texting me things, like a woman in the airport saying, ‘When’s Oprah going to run?’ So Gayle sends me these things, and then she’ll go, ‘I know, I know, I know! It wouldn’t be good for you - it would be good for everyone else,’” she told the magazine. “I met with someone the other day who said that they would help me with a campaign. That’s not for me.”

As proof of why misleading headlines matter, all I can see from the left side of things outside of here and carefully curated twitter timelines is this as proof of how Clinton was the sole reason Dems lost and anyone who voted for her or defended her is just as bad or worse than Republicans.

No mention of the circumstances, or how the dude was punished, then shitcanned for being a repeat offender. Nope, just the leftier than thou assholes that actually seem to be taking over the important non-Congressional aspects of the party ensuring that anyone who even touched a Clinton vote is excommunicated forever.

I just love how Mueller, a guy who has more Republican bonafides than Trump ever did is being made out ot be some liberal partisan. Mueller is the statesman every elected Republican deludes him or herself into thinking they are. This is a guy who’s spent fifty years serving his country in some shape or form whether it was in Vietnam or prosecuting the Gambinos. I probably wouldn’t agree with Bob Mueller on most political issues but on love of country, he’s got that right, and he’s got it much more right than anyone on FNC ever will.

I really hope so. It really is disturbing how Mueller, a man who honestly would be a good hypothetical AG or SCOTUS pick in a sane GOP administration has become their chew toy for attack. Trump’s gonna go on a Twitter rampage.

Bombardier has won a trade case in the United States, overturning a decision to impose damaging tariffs on imports of its C-Series aircraft.

The UK government had suspected that the aerospace and transportation company would lose. Unions had feared sales and UK jobs would be hit.

But in a surprise ruling, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) rejected a complaint brought by Boeing.

The ITC voted 4-0 in favour of Bombardier.

It means tariffs of 292% will not now be imposed on orders of C-Series planes by American carriers.

Interesting that the Mueller firing story came out now. Talking heads have been saying it is because of McGahan trying to save himself in the Mueller probe. I wonder if Trump being out of the country with his enforcers is also part of it. The old “Honor Among Thieves” story I guess.

I don’t know about that. This entire situation is going to provide psychologists and sociologists with decades of case study material. One thing I didn’t really appresciate fully before was the extreme degrees to which members of a group will conflate the short term desperate expedient needs of that group with their own long term self interest, even when common sense and prior examples should inform them otherwise.

Very true. Pence just strikes me as someone I would never trust. He looks like he was the kid in school that got a copy of the test before hand, was smart enough to change a few answers, and then rat out the guys who gave out the copies. I wouldn’t be surprised at all, if in ten years or so, it came out that he was the one feeding Mueller all the information on Trump corruption while measuring the curtains in the Oval Office and planning an executive order to make chastity belts required for all women who go outside.

439
goddamnedfrank  Jan 26, 2018 • 12:24:02pm

The other thing that sustains the kind of behavior we’re seeing within the GOP is obstinate / defiant syndrome (aka wagon circling, institutional defensiveness, cult mentality) where the mere perception of an external threat to the group motivates cohesiveness within the group and further suppresses introspection and reflection. The members become so preoccupied with their existential struggle that they lose their individuality completely, which is especially ironic in this case because of the Republican foundational myth of rugged individualism.

re: #439 goddamnedfrank

The other thing that sustains the kind of behavior we’re seeing within the GOP is obstinate / defiant syndrome (aka wagon circling, institutional defensiveness, cult mentality) where the mere perception of an external threat to the group motivates cohesiveness within the group and further suppresses introspection and reflection. The members become so preoccupied with their existential struggle that they lose their individuality completely, which is especially ironic in this case because of the Republican foundational myth of rugged individualism.

Long years of Republicans denying reality on all fronts contributes greatly to the absolute imperviousness of their defensive shields when the time comes for their epistemic closure.
