It made perfect sense to them at the time, because they thought that the TPP would collapse without US participation and we’d just create something to take its place or negotiate unilateral deals with the other TPP parties.
What they didn’t count on was the other countries saying “We’re close enough to ratification that we don’t need the US” and pushing forward.

I would respectfully disagree, or at least look at it through a slightly different lens: He did it because it appealed to his white nationalist base, in my humble opinion.
It’s the same with NAFTA, they loved him railing against it during the campaign because they thought it might scare Mexico and Canada into placating us with a more “fair” deal. Even when their own constituents (farmers, factory owners, hotels, etc) came to them with fears of what would happen if NAFTA were axed, they sent them away with assurances that Trump was going to get a “better” deal for them.
Now? Now they’re scared shitless because Donny is desperate for something to fire up his base and axing NAFTA to “stiggit” to Mexico has a certain appeal. But the governments of both countries have stated that if he does that, neither will be making a unilateral deal, there will either be NAFTA or nothing.
re: #4 Scout

That was his motivation, and they agreed with it to a lesser extent because they and their rich donors figured it was a good plan. Either TPP would collapse and they’d just start negotiations on a “fairer” deal or the other countries involved would beg us to stay by offering to agree to our terms. He and they massively overestimated America’s influence as an economic power, thinking it’s still the 20th century and America can dictate terms as it likes.

That last part is what they thought. Same isolationist mentality that drove Brexit. Pre World War II thinking that totally ignores the fact that economy of scale works in trade relationships too, and that making shitty little one off deals here and there not only ends up compounding complexity and diplomatic overhead but leaves us fundamentally outside the new larger trading alliances that everyone else will lean on for leverage.

Ayep. It’s an “a la carte” mentality: “We’ll just pick which countries we want to be associated with, just as we always have.” But a global economy doesn’t work that way, the more hoops a company has to jump through to get their product to store shelves, the less profit there is in it for them and the harder it is to compete against companies who don’t have those hoops. A shorter, pithier way to put it would be “Britain needs Europe to survive, but Europe doesn’t need Britain in the same way.”
These are good insights into the trump - TPP stupidity, but the deal was fundamentally about containing Chinese influence and expansion.
This is the primary reason why Japan worked so hard to keep it going even without the U.S. (And it was Japan who kept it going and bringing it to the signing stage.)

TPP, NAFTA, NATO, and other alliances/trade deals that are hurting the power and influence of countries that own Trump’s bloated ass. Sew discord with a mind towards weakening America’s influence and support network. Best money Vlad ever spent.
And I know I’m stating the obvious here but the worst part is that Trump quite obviously has NO idea what NAFTA or TPP even are. If pressed for details of his understanding of these trade deals he would completely whiff.
But this completely eludes his supporters. Some may realize it and just not care, but I honestly think the majority of the mouth breathers supporting Trump really think he knows what he’s talking about.

Also: isn’t the TPP dynamic somewhat different now? Rather than being a part of the formation process, (and thus possibly able to influence the Partnership’s structure) wouldn’t the US now be looking to - basically - join a club that has already set itself up without us?
But yeah, stoking up gripes about “unfair trade deals” among the mouthbreather class is about the extent of Donald Trump’s trade “policy”, when it comes to actually doing stuff, he seem to be bent on proving himself about as useless as with every other aspect of his Presidency: Trump supposed “legendary deal-making” is useful in only one single context: selling his “brand” to line his own pockets. .

I largely suspect that’s because Trump has left the management of his company to his underlings for ages now and brought that mentality to the White House. He fell into a real estate empire, he didn’t built it himself, and so he hasn’t needed to know how to do more than maintain what he already had. And we’ve seen so far that he’s shit at even doing that.
Greetings from a moderate-speed intercity train in China. We’re moving at 150kph (94 mph) between the provincial capital Changsha and another major city, Changde. The old train would have taken at least 6 hours. This one takes 4 to cover 280km/175 miles. The ride is smooth and quiet.

Wash. wheat growers call Trans-Pacific Partnership a ‘looming disaster’
From the story:
Squires said the TPP deal would gradually discount the tariff rate paid for imported Australian and Canadian wheat into Japan from about $150 a metric ton to $85 per metric ton, and would leave the U.S. import tariff unchanged.
“The Japanese love the quality and consistency of Pacific Northwest wheat and continue to buy our wheat despite its marginally higher price on the world market. But a $65 a ton disadvantage is just too much to overcome and would force them into the arms of our competitors,” Squires said.

re: #13 Targetpractice
When Trump has pressed a deal himself, he’s generally fucked it up massively by not having a clear picture of what’s possible, and instead going for “everything will be my way, shut up” while trying to complete slag competition.
Trump pushing the USFL to compete directly with the NFL was a fucking disaster. It took a league that might have marched on and did okay and tanked it. Trump Air fucked up in a different way, with Trump slagging other airlines as not safe while sell his service as ultra premium…which sounded good right up until one of his planes failed.
The way he presents TPP and NAFTA is a lot like what he pulled with USFL…anything less than total dominance is a failure, even if that makes no sense in the bigger picture or really isn’t a win.

From the story:
Ayep, this isn’t 1955, America is not the “only game in town” and hasn’t been for at least a generation. We’re now one competitor in a sea of nations who have built or are building their own industries to compete with us. Just as we’re willing to accept something less than we’d like because it’s cheaper coming from China than the factories a couple states away, there are a lot of other countries who will see Aussie wheat as being “good enough” to buy than paying a premium for American wheat.
.re: #23 danarchy
True, but this is far better than what we had before. Besides, this service would like running Acela between NYC and Buffalo.

Shinkansen are among the things that make me love living in Japan.
China’s 200mph trains run between major cities, like Beijing, Shanghai and provincial capitals, and use brand-new stations. Those run on dedicated rights of way. This train also has its own ROW, but uses the older train stations, so its speed is less.

I think it may be time for a major campaign of non-violent, but otherwise aggressive, civil disobedience in this country. A major condition for this has been met in the form of the NRA’s legislative stranglehold: The authorities have been subverted and the normal channels for the appeal of grievance have been effectively blocked. Worse yet, this is being done against the will of a clear majority.
Such a campaign could seek to disrupt gun shows, NRA events, and gun related business events like stockholder and board meetings.
Needless to say, it would be extremely dangerous, possibly more dangerous than the civil rights campaigns of the 60s. Each participant will have to weigh that risk very carefully.

I remember being big into Erich von Däniken when his books were all the rage at the turn of the 70’s. I grew out of it when I learned that there is a large body of scholarly research that offers a well founded and rational explanation of what he was presenting as ancient aliens.
But modern America has little use of elitist experts.

Germany does. And China has it because they stole the technology from Germany…
My wife and I took the high speed train First Class from Berlin, Germany to Gdansk, Poland. We were the only Americans on the train, so at the border when the crew changed from Germans to Polish, the Polish crew spent a lot of time with us asking questions and practicing English (it helps my wife speaks Polish).
The train car has a speedometer in the front of the car, which usually showed us traveling in excess of 160 k/h. Tough to take pictures from a train moving that fast, though I did get a few.

I see you beat me to that one.
yes, a standard straw-man argument.
nobody is advocating a repeal of the 2A or confiscation, but a group of young victims is now actively pushing for sensible legislation to reduce the amount of violent gun crime and mass shootings.
“I’m a law-abiding citizen! There’s no need to fear me because I would never break the law. Now excuse me while I install this bump-stock on my AR-15 so’s I can get around those pesky laws that keep me from owning a real M-16.”
After George and Amal Clooney put up $500,000 to help defray costs for the “March for Our Lives,” several other celebrities and other wealthy people have stepped up to make matching donations.
Those “high school kids coached by Democrats” has me wondering how reflexive this is. I wonder how many “young republican” type groups there are out there started and funded by Republican think tanks. I’d be willing to be there are many more than there are Dem equivalents.

So much stupid in such a small comment. I presume he’s talking about Parkland, which had armed police. As for Planned Parenthood, that’s the standard conservative politician talking point. A woman who ran a pro-Donald Trump Facebook group that promoted events during the 2016 election that have since been linked to Russia denied in a new interview that she was influenced by Russian trolls.
“I don’t go with Russians, c’mon, give me a break,” Florine Gruen Goldfarb told CNN when asked about her group amplifying events planned by Russians.
Goldfarb runs a Facebook page called “Team Trump Broward County.” According to CNN, the page shared multiple events that were planned by Russians during the 2016 election, as well as posting photos and videos from one of the events after it concluded.
Goldfarb denied any Russian influence, telling the network that the people who attended the events were simply supporters of then-candidate Trump.

As homeless camps explode in L.A. suburbs, residents fear they will become permanent
The situation has alarmed Los Angeles County health officials, who fear the growing encampments are ripe for public health outbreaks, notably hepatitis A, which caused numerous deaths in San Diego’s homeless community.
So the county has placed toilets, sinks and other supplies at this encampment in West Carson, as well as at those in unincorporated areas of Pico Rivera, East Rancho Dominguez and Pearblossom.
But the move has troubled some nearby residents, who fear the county’s action will make what they hoped would be temporary camps permanent

Wash. wheat growers call Trans-Pacific Partnership a ‘looming disaster’
From the story:

Newsweek publishes exposé about itself after staff firings
Two of the magazine’s top editors — editor in chief Bob Roe and executive editor Kenneth Li — were abruptly dismissed, along with reporter Celeste Katz. Multiple reporters resigned in protest. The trio was fired as they were in the midst of pursuing an investigative story into the financial ties of Newsweek’s parent company, the Newsweek Media Group.
Despite the firings, a group of staff journalists continued reporting on the company’s finances. Late Tuesday night, their exposé was published, revealing a deep financial relationship between the parent company and a small Christian school, Olivet University.
The investigation’s findings were damning, but it was the colossal editor’s note at the top of the story that was the most stunning.

Did anyone see the comments that were left behind on FB, some calling for the kids to be run over or a suicide bomber to strike them?

As much as I dislike Dana, haven’t many gun control advocates wanted someone from the NRA to come out and be held accountable in a public forum?

A Pennsylvania-based offshoot of the Unification Church is encouraging couples to bring their AR-15 rifles with them to a commitment ceremony in the Pocono Mountains, a half-mile from an elementary school.
World Peace and Unification Sanctuary in Newfoundland said it planned the Feb. 28 ceremony months ago, well before last week’s massacre at a Florida high school. Authorities say the alleged gunman used an AR-15 in the attack that killed 17.
Tim Elder, the Unification Sanctuary’s director of world missions, said Tuesday the church believes the AR-15 symbolizes the “rod of iron” mentioned in the Bible’s apocalyptic book of Revelation.
The church website directs couples to show up to the ceremony with an AR-15 “or equivalents such as an AK semiautomatic rifle, representing both the intent and the ability to defend one’s family, community … “
The church is down the road from Wallenpaupack South Elementary School, and some parents expressed alarm at the planned ceremony.

Now more than never, it would be a perfect time to report such comments to the FBI and local LEOs. They would be especially pro-active to such activity.

Well, sure, but there will be other adults there, and as you note, the kids really do seem to be OK. And I can’t imagine the NRA’s sending one of its foaming at the mouth loons to represent it on national TV is a good move for them anyway. But Shannon’s tweet seemed a little overly defensive, IMO.

Hmmm, maybe the NRA making videos with Dan Wacko Mongino crushing lemons or Dana burning newspapers wasn’t the way to go in persuading hearts and minds.
re: #165 dangerman
mean drivers suck.
that is all
I went to the quarter car wash yesterday and because it was 60 and sunny in the morning a lot of people had the same idea.
The one part of the car wash has four bays just for washing…no vacuums before the bay.
When I pulled in there was a car waiting for one of the bays to open so I pulled up behind him and thought I was forming a line that could wait in rotation for the next open bay. That is pretty much the method most times at this car wash.
So there I am waiting and just as a bay was finishing up (you could tell the guy was packing up his sponge, spray, mats, etc.) a guy drives in right past me and pulls up behind the car getting ready to leave.
I thought you could tell I was kind of back looking at all of the bays, car running, waiting.
And the asshole knew it too. As soon as he got out of the car he looked right at me with a fuck you, I got mine.
I wanted to walk up to him and say, “You’re a Trump voter aren’t you? I bet I would’ve been right. But I also knew if he was what I expected he’d be an asshole with a big mouth and would make a big deal about it all.
What made my day though was an elderly Black lady who apparently was watching and she waved at me to let me know she was about to leave and to move in behind her. As I pulled up behind her, window down, she said: “Lot of people like him around here” loud enough I think the guy heard it. He was just at the back of the next bay.
I smiled and winked at her and as she drove out we waved at each other.
Just another day…

re: #5 Targetpractice
It’s already worse since Mexico has increased agricultural trade with other countries. Even keeping NAFTA in place has already hurt us. Same with Canada but to a lesser degree.
NAFTA is still there - for now - but it is already weakened. And that hurts all those Trump states that have anything to do with agriculture. They are already feeling it.

Florida GOPer votes down AR-15 ban — then backs Parkland teens with ribbon https://t.co/F37mMW4fAv
— Raw Story (@RawStory) February 21, 2018
Caldwell claimed that the bill was rejected because it was a “ban on all guns,” not just AR-15s and other weapons with high-capacity magazines.
“We need to be focused on real solutions,” Caldwell opined. “These maniacs that attack our schools, they’re essentially lone wolf terrorists. And we have to have strategies to focus on that. You’ve got a great example here of where the FBI had been reported to, the school had been reported to, the local law enforcement had been reported to. They did not communicate effectively. They did not understand that this guy was a real threat.”
According to the Florida Republican, lawmakers need to “focus on that side of the equation” instead of passing gun safety laws.
“We need to respond with tools that are going to make a difference,” he remarked. “We know for a fact that these schools get targeted because they’re gun-free zones. Ninety-five percent plus attacks happen in gun-free zones.”

I thought the same about L Ron Hubbard, but someone even more evil took over when he died.
Trump and the NRA must be feeling much pressure since the Parkland massacre. Pressure must be high to cause them to throw out a sacrificial ban on bump stocks in an attempt to stem the rising tide of those who have had enough. IMO sacrificial ban is all it really is. I can’t help but wonder about the discussion that preceded that decision with the NRA knowing Trump will go for it. The bump stock ban would allow Trump to boast that he at least did something…unlike Obama who did nothing…will be his words.
My thoughts: “Mr. Mueller, I hope to see Trump’s problems continue to multiply.”

US Supreme Court forbids seizure of ancient Persian artifacts https://t.co/7vWDiUySmz
— Raw Story (@RawStory) February 21, 2018
The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that Americans injured in a 1997 suicide bombing in Jerusalem cannot seize ancient Persian artifacts from a Chicago museum to satisfy a $71.5 million court judgment against Iran, which they had accused of complicity in the attack.
The justices, in an 8-0 ruling, upheld a lower court’s decision in favor of Iran that had prevented the plaintiffs from collecting on the judgment, which Tehran has not paid, by obtaining antiquities held at the University of Chicago’s Oriental Institute. The important Persian cultural artifacts, on loan from Iran to the museum since the 1930s, include clay tablets boasting some of the oldest writing in the world.
Justice Elena Kagan did not participate in the decision.
The decision could make it harder for plaintiffs in other cases arising from militant attacks overseas to seek compensation by seizing and selling off cultural relics owned by foreign countries.

Of course, bump stocks had nothing to do with Parkland. OTOH, outlawing them would be good — as long as the legislation is carefully drafted to outlaw anything that provides comparable capabilities, requires that existing bump stocks be turned it by a certain date, and treats continued possession of these items as a criminal offense with a substantial fine and a prison sentence.

Your comment reminds me of something I heard about Trump attempting to ban anything that makes a gun a “machine gun” or however Trumpy said it.
It was said that there is no way for Trump and Sessions to do anything that would not require congress to write legislation and have it pass. This can not be done by executive order.
And of course the summation was; that is not going to happen with this congress.

TSA breaks record for most firearms found in one week
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on Tuesday announced that it has set a new record for the most firearms found in carry-on luggage during a one-week time frame.
Between Feb. 5 and 11, the agency found 104 firearms in carry-on bags across the country. That number is up from a prior record of 96 weapons, which were discovered last July.
Eighty-seven of the 104 firearms found were loaded, the agency said, and 38 were discovered with a round in the chamber. Seventeen of the 104 were not loaded when found. TSA mandates that firearms travel unloaded and in checked baggage. The agency also requires travelers to announce firearms each time they are transported.

What the ever loving fuck? This just came into my email inbox:
USDA staffer shocks agency with public admission about sex for promotion
At one point during the program, which employees said was televised to department facilities across the country, Davis unexpectedly took the stage and alleged to her colleagues in emotional and specific terms how she was sexually harassed on the job. She described how a supervisor, whom she named, offered to give her a promotion to grade GS-13 in exchange for sex.
The supervisor and others are named in a lawsuit she filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Davis alleges USDA managers retaliated against her because of her equal employment complaints against the agency and her involvement in an investigation of whistleblower complaints involving the department’s Office of the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights.
Davis acknowledged she submitted to the supervisor’s advances in hopes of getting promoted. “I agreed to the sex,” she said in an interview.
Shortly after the program, she received a letter placing her on paid administrative leave. She was told not to use any agency facilities, not even voice mail. Furthermore, the letter added, “you and your family or close associates are prohibited from contacting any USDA employees at work or at home, to discuss any matters associated with your employment with USDA.”
Curiously, the letter indicates Davis was not placed on leave because of what she did but, apparently, because of what she might do.
Read the rest. Wow.

I wish some Democrat would come out with that publicly: Trump is the biggest insult to the “working class” one can imagine. — lawhawk (@lawhawk) February 21, 2018
When the GOP/NRA only response is more guns, yeah, it’s time to change the tune.
The GOP/NRA have no other solution besides more guns. They refuse to implement even the most basic of nationwide gun regulations. Only in the US do we have the kind of mass carnage from guns on a daily basis - outside war zones and third world countries - and even then, we have more mass shootings.
States and countries with strong gun control have fewer incidents, and fewer deaths.
The NRA asks where does gun control work. It works everywhere it’s been tried.

Idiots posting over on The Hill are absolutely losing their shit because high school kids are protesting. Some are claiming the minimum voting age should be 21 because 18 year olds are too emotional and immature. Let that sink in…..”adults” want to change the law because high school students are standing up for themselves.
The only way they know how to deal with real problems is to try and prevent people from voting.

Those more affluent Americans owning hybrid vehicles or electric cars wouldn’t be paying their share of costs if it’s paid only through fuel tax. We all benefit from improved roads and infrastructure. The fairest approach is to pay through income taxes — maybe a temporary added tax that increases by income level.
True, but when this is the only carbon tax Trump would sign, I would support it. Though its true that passing it in this context is regressive. Its too important to encourage zero emission vehicles to pass on a carbon tax Trump would actually sign.

The students are not going to run away from the NRA. Or, run away from Dana “Guns.”
In some ways I think they are doing now what many of us should have done all along.
And I have to say, some of the older journalists I am seeing around are really pissing me off. Many are acting all jaded and saying the NRA is too big and powerful and they have seen this before…so they are not convinced anything will come of this.
How about helping do some exposure on the NRA and how they got all that power and why it is doing nothing for anyone…even the gun owners. I know journalists need to stay neutral, but are some of you not covering this properly because you are judging results before they are in?

That’s how I figure it’ll go. Loesch makes her living being snotty, sarcastic and condescending. That’s the one note she knows how to play.
That might fly when she’s barking at other adults, but it’ll look like she’s bullying a bunch of high school kids. The gun nuts will eat it up, but normal, sane people will be horrified.
That’s the brilliance of the Parkland kids. Their age and earnestness changes the calculus altogether. The nut jobs and Trump cultists will not be able to pull the shit that they’ve been pulling forever.
Hell - D’Souza, Dim Jim and Pammyz have all been disavowed by CPAC! Could anyone have foreseen that before Emma Gonzalez started speaking out?
re: #372 FormerDirtDart
[Embedded content]
I’ve been thinking this since reading that execrable David Brooks article about how we have to respect red staters first, then let them lead on gun legislation.
My first response is ‘fuck that’. My second, more thoughtful, response is ‘well, dehumanising our opponents isn’t a good way forward, and humans respond better to an open approach and a human face, rather than drawing a hard line in the sand’. My third response, after further thought, is ‘fuck that’.
On one hand, I know that when misguided people feel threatened and attacked, like that tearful woman in the Better Angels discussion who insisted ‘we’re people, not mindless drones’, they aren’t going to listen to anything. And I know that Trumpers and other assorted deplorables, for the most part, are still people - they might be this generation’s equivalent of good Germans, but that’s all the original good Germans were as well; people who were a protected group, turning a semi-deliberate blind eye to evil and helping it along for the sake of belonging. That might be evil, but it’s also human, and it’s a rare person who hasn’t done at least a mild version of that at some point in their life. I know I have.
And I also know that people can and do respond to calm, nonjudgemental discussion. I am constantly reminded of a flight I took when I was still very young, and I sat next to a random guy on this plane to Sydney. I was reading the paper, which was probably unusual enough for a teen, and I got to talking with this guy. It was around the time of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, and I was still an insecure and somewhat homophobic teen, with a father who was extremely and angrily homophobic, and I remember making several disparaging and unpleasant comments about the Mardi Gras articles in the paper. This random older guy I was talking to didn’t get upset at me, didn’t make me feel stupid or bigoted, and just talked, asking me nonjudgemental questions and calmly reasoning through it. I didn’t have an epiphany then. I didn’t tell him he was right. He was probably appalled at this little shit with such bigoted views, and if we’d had Twitter, he might have posted something about how teens today are just as bad as the old conservative white bigots around us. But I changed, and grew up, and while I don’t know how much difference that one conversation made, I know that it was maybe an hour of my life, and yet years later, I still think about it. So wherever you are, random guy on plane, thank you for being reasonable and talking to me like a person. You made a big difference in at least one person’s life.
The problem with this idea, though, is that having a reasonable discussion with people who don’t share your reality is futile. And even if, while having that discussion, you do temporarily share reality, the first thing that happens after that discussion is that they go back to their private world where teenagers are crisis actors and Democrats eat babies on pizza and Obama and Clinton and Soros all conspired in Benghazi to collude with Russia to get Trump elected so they could take him down. And while I know that refusing to engage doesn’t improve that situation, I don’t see any action that does, short of removing them from their programming.
I could, if I had to, forgive someone’s blindness to their own privilege and their inaction in the face of evil, if I believed that their eyes could be opened. But I don’t. And nothing they say or do tells me that they could.

Possibly, but this is CNN - if she does or says something awful, it will be ‘both sides’. More likely she will Gish Gallop and pull made-up statistics out which nobody will have ever heard of, and CNN can then make it look like she won. Gundamentalists have a lot of made up statistics.
Another variable for this CNN thing - if there’s a live audience, it could get pretty rowdy.
