Game Of Trolls

I’ll say it again for the weak minded: Assad and Putin are NO FOOLS!
WHAT REASON would they have to do this, when they are clearly WINNING????
Inches from victory, WHY, would they bring the wrath of the world upon themselves???

What disappoints me, is how easily Trump is manipulated, by treacherous underlings!

Just the other day, Trump had a “secret” national security meeting, within an hour info was leaked in an effort to undermine his position and policies.. TRAITORS are in the nest!

And now THIS??? Does ANYONE think the timing of this event is Coincidence???
Seriously????

From the previous thread. I’m going to have to bow out and take a nap, because I need to rest up for tomorrow’s fresh hell (village board meeting; the village clerk just delivered the agenda).

re: #357 Backwoods_Sleuth

wiki is exaggerating or just mis-characterizing with “widely used in residential settings”…it may well have been used at first in residential settings by local governments for mosquito control.

widely used by “lawn owners”? Nope.

It would be tough to say without analysing which pesticides were used by homeowners from 1965 onward. That would be a huge task for sure, and probably not worth the effort. The only thing that matters is whether the chemical is dangerous enough (where enough is defined by liberals as health and conservatives as profitability) or no.

This story is blowing up right away. Snopes is on it now, with mixed reviews based on what the particular claim is.

snopes.com

The most interesting of the issues to me here isn’t whether the scientific studies are conclusive or no. It’s the graft.

Chlorpyrifos, an insecticide with alleged origins in Nazi Germany, was set to be banned by the EPA over health and environmental safety concerns, but President Trump reversed this decision after Dow Chemicals, a manufacturer of the chemical, donated one million dollars to his inauguration fund.

Rating: Mostly true. (The part about the Nazis developing it is false, though they laid the groundwork in organophosphates.)

They go through each of the claims in that quote. (The million dollars is true. Dow makes the chemical. Is that a quid pro quo? Hard to say.)

Village Board Meeting comes up a little short for a band name but it’s very worthy for a mid-career consequential album name.

For our esteemed host Mr. Johnson: That was an interesting video; the music is catchy and the video is quite original.

(Pesky mixed media that the animation catches my eye and distracts from the music. /s)

While some of what you present to us just isn’t my cuppa coffee (why is cuppa in my spell check dictionary), I do appreciate you introducing acts and musical styles with which I am unfamiliar.

I enjoy it when you bring someone or something to my attention I’ve never heard of before.

(I still like Katy Perry /phhht).

Okay, nap time. Someone turn off the wind outside, it’s too loud.

I’m not fond of dragging discussions to a new thread, when the old thread is still alive, but here we are.

Not sure why it would be “tough to say” what pesticides were used by homeowners from 1965 on.
It’s not like it was some kind of huge secret back then.

My big pet peeve about this whole Chlorpyrifos discussion, was the initial blaming “lawn owners” as the biggest source for contaminating water.
It just is not true.

Are lawns a significant source of run off pollution? Due to a lack of research, the answer to this question at this time is “maybe”. What is known about run-off pollution and about lawn fertilization and pesticide use trends and behaviors; as well as knowledge of the nutrient cycle, indicates run-off pollution can and does occur from lawns.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Large agricultural interests have for decades tried to shift the environmental damage blame, not just with this particular pesticide but ANY pesticide/herbicide/fungicide/fertilizer, to anyone but itself. And I am confident in making that statement as a longtime farmer extremely familiar with this argument/distraction.

Posted last year but bears repeating for the amazing images.
How the United States Looked Before the EPA

Back in 1970, then-President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the Environmental Protection Agency. Just after its creation, the EPA created a photo-documentary project called “Project Documerica.” Its purpose? To “record the state of the environment and efforts to improve it.”

Last thought about groundwater contamination:

IMHO, when it comes to poisoning our water supply, another culprit vying with agriculture for top villain honors is mining interests.
All of those horrible lawn owners as a group do not even come close.

I remember smog alerts, cancelled physical education classes, burning eyes, heavy lungs. Heavy lungs as a kid! The skyline all obscured apart from rare days. I also remember looking up at the layer of tobacco smoke in the room when mom and dad threw a party. Ashtrays all over the place.

Now since gasoline has been cheap in recent years we have muscle cars. Loud, hundreds upon hundreds of horsepower. But no smoke, start easy on cold days and can turn or stop quickly too. All at better mileage.

It just astonishes me (although it probably shouldn’t) that a lot of people have no memory of how horrible the pre-EPA days were. And establishing the EPA in 1970 did not instantly produce clean air/water.

For me, it was not so much urban smog that is my most vivid memory, it was the acid rain.

Try living in a Western PA steel town in the 50’s-70s with the fly ash sprinkling down on you from the coke ovens along with the rotten egg hydrogen sulfide funds when the ovens were opened. Add the various mills and mines dumping acids and sludge into the Ohio river. You walk on the bridge between Ambridge and the J&L plant in Aliquippa and see swarms of dead fish floating down the Ohio.

The the mills were shut down, the blame laid on the EPA and liberals…you had to leave…

Father arrested after retrieving gun from son’s backpack at school, reports say

Ramon Nuiry’s first mistake was leaving a gun in his 8-year-old son’s school backpack. His second mistake was showing up at the child’s elementary school in Miami-Dade County to retrieve it.

Nuiry, 53, was arrested Thursday at Kendale Lakes Elementary School in southwest Miami-Dade, according to South Florida news reports.

Nuiry admitted to police that he put the loaded gun inside his son’s book bag and forgot to remove it before the boy went to school, WFOR-Ch. 4 reported.

Instead of notifying school officials or police, Nuiry went to the school and asked staff to call his son — with his backpack — to the office.

A parent who saw Nuiry take the gun out of the bag, put it in his waistband and leave the school told school officials who then notified Miami-Dade Schools police, the Miami Herald reported.

GOOD THING IT WASN’T A BIBLE! THE LIBTURDS WOULD’A PACKED HIM OFF TO FEMA CAMP FOR SURE! OPPRESSION! OUR RIGHTS ARE BEING VIOLATED!

Watching the trees literally turning brown and dying right before our eyes left a real impression on me.
Then there was the obvious acid rain damage to building facades, rock faces, etc.

Really scary stuff that was.

its that comfort trap thing we were talking about weeks ago when they were gutting “regulations” (why do i need to use a checklist, nothing ever goes wrong)

why do we need all these regs if the air and water are so clean? we should gut em.

the air and water are so clean because we have all these regs

Yup, growing up in Pittsburgh in the 1960’s we were told that we never had pollution. The sulfur smell and low hanging yellowish-grey clouds that somehow appeared every morning around 5 when the steel mills fired up, were ‘ground fog’.

And yes, I remember the silvery grey sheen that covered cars some mornings. How the snow turned grey after a couple of days. And all the black soot that would fall out of the window sills when we opened the windows.

I never really heard about all the accidents in the mills until some friends started working in them. I suspect that there were a lot of accidents. Mostly not publicized as “Not Newsworthy”. It was often hard and dangerous work.

Where I am on the Illinois River, pollution would cling to the river, coming up from St Louis. The valley is about 5-6 miles wide here, and in the 70s you could often not see from the bluffs on one side to the other. Now it is clear and sharp every day.

Look even in the modern pre Trump EPA era, the same one that has made costly mistakes, gone overboard sometimes there is still too much damage being done.

Often the problem isn’t the agency, but trying to figure out who the polluters are (after successors/mergers/acquisitions/bankruptcies) and getting someone to pay. Then there are the scientific challenges to figure out how to remediate and to what level.

The best way to deal with Superfund sites is to make sure new ones don’t occur and that we minimize the point source pollution. Then we need to get the existing list of sites funded to begin cleanup there as well.

A few towns over we’ve got a Ford paint dump that created a toxic legacy there. In another town, a company dumped hexavalent chromium, and it’s leached into groundwater and is extremely toxic.

Oh, a few towns over from that one, you’ve got a former Dupont munitions plant where they did all kinds of tests and there are all manner of chemicals leaching into the water.

That’s just within a 20 mile sweep of Northern NJ off the top of my head.

When Dad got out of high school he spent 2 years in the CCC then he went to welding school in East Pittsburgh PA. He was able to do speciality welding and during the war he worked at the Charleston Navy Yard. After the war, Dad worked at the HH Robertson plant in Ambridge PA at the same time as one Charlie Buchinsky (A.K.A. Charles Bronson). Dad was repairing a rolling machine when another employee turned the machine on and Dad’s right arm was crushed. He had to have multiple operations to put his arm back together. Five years he was on worker comp and State Disability (There was no Social Security disability until Eisenhower expanded the benefits in the 50s). After that Dad worked as a guard at the plant until he just couldn’t take the abuse any more from them and he took up welding again, getting a Boilermakers Union card.

I experienced a misfit first hand. Think jewelry building. And regulations for emissions and waste run by the generator aka each enterprise running. Each of those too small to be regulated. But in the basement plumbing it all came together just as if one big 13 story factory.

if you want a permit to process your waste you can do that. but not for someone else’s. The building could not legally treat the stream of water from upstairs. Because they could not account for all that went in like the generators could. Impasse. Act of Congress impasse.

In short we compromised, and everyone that wants to mfg does, and the waste streams are well taken care of.

I drove that a lot with Dad when I lived back in Pittsburgh. But that’s what happens with years of neglecting road maintenance PLUS lax building codes!

We should remember the Russian fighters there are spoiling for payback. They want the fight, regardless because we killed hundreds of them in a recent lopsided battle. I’m a little surprised bigger incidents have not yet occurred, an indication of well disciplined forces.

I imagine they’re quite busy trying to talk Dotard down from dropping a nuke on a Syrian military base.

Now you’re all thinking about it too.

You know why Trump doesn’t want regulations?

So he cannot be held responsible for fires that kill people.

Very true. Plus, of course, losing most of the local tax base. Iirc, big local employers were Westinghouse to the east in picturesquely named Wilmerding and the US Steel at the junction of Turtle Creek and Monongahela River. (Opposite Kennywood) I suspect that neither is the big employer they were 50 years ago.

I just enjoy Charlie Pierce so much. His end of week column always features some dinosaur news, New Orleans jazz, and old movie footage on Pathe. esquire.com was so good I quoted the entire dinosaur piece. Hope my formatting is clear, but everything from here on is CP:

Is it a good day for dinosaur news, New York Times? It’s always a good day for dinosaur news!

Gigantic dinosaurs frolicked and splashed some 170 million years ago in the lagoons of what is now Scotland. That’s what a team of paleontologists has determined after discovering dozens of jumbo-sized footprints belonging to long-necked sauropods on the Isle of Skye. Mixed with the herbivores’ tracks were a few clawed impressions left behind by two-legged meat-eaters known as theropods.

Sure, you say “frolicking,” and the theropods say, “Lunch!”

Identifying two types of footprints in the same place also challenges the idea that long-necked dinosaurs waded into shallow, muddy waters to escape predators, said Stephen Brusatte, a paleontologist at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and an author of the new study. “We’re actually seeing these dinosaurs interacting with each other and interacting with their environment,” he said. The team reported their findings Monday in the Scottish Journal of Geology.

Sure, you say “interacting,” and the theropods say, “a la carte.”

Ms. dePolo plans to explore the Isle of Skye for more sauropod and theropod footprints. She and her colleagues are asking anyone who thinks they might have spotted a dino track on the island to reach out. “Let the big nerds who do this for a living know, so we can chase them down and tell these dinosaurs’ stories,” she said. “I’m willing to look at a thousand tidal pools that are not footprints in order to key in on the one that might be.”

She sounds like she’s having a good time, which is as it should be, because dinosaurs frolicked then to make us happy now.

Hey, I’m back. Just got back from Snowmass Mountain for a weekend of skiing with a motley crew I’ve been skiing with for about four winters now. We raised almost 10 grand for the V Foundation in honor of our dearly departed member of the ski crew Kimberly, who died of cervical cancer two years ago, she was only 44. Her favorite color was purple, so the crew got all dolled in purple yesterday and went skiing! You couldn’t miss us, lots of people took pictures when we went in the lodge for lunch.

I’m the one with the glasses. I commissioned my mother to crochet the hat and scarf. I auctioned the hat at the apres ski party we put on and threw that 50 bucks into the charity.

Best part? It snowed a foot last night. Wet heavy snow, but I’ll take it! Fun was had by all.

He is not a coach, has never been to any theological seminary, and is not a pastor in the usual sense of the word (ordained). He wouldn’t be worth talking about except he has millions of followers on his podcasts and YouTube combined.

Utah Outcasts dealt with this story four days ago. Felicia’s response when told is priceless … .

NSFW for discussions with vulgar language and discussion of sex (the healthy kind, not the Fundamentalist wingnut kind).

The coinage of political power is WINNING ELECTIONS.

“Moral” victories means that you do not have political power. And you are less able to undo the damage when you do get it back.

And they cost a lot of coin. People complain about spending a billion dollars on a presidential election, but that’s in a country with 326 MM people (about $3 a person).

“Moral victories”are basically a euphemism for “losing”. I’m sure that if the Democrats win a 30-seat majority in the next Congress, some Berniebros are likely to burn up the Internet whining and bitching that was only a victory for “corporate Dems”,and that if Bernie had been elected, it would have been a 150-seats: all dedicated Socialists….

Her battle with cancer was freaky. Stage 4 diagnosis, given the whole six months talk. She goes through treatment and goes into remission. Only 3% of Stage 4 diagnosis patients go into remission. So she got to live for two more years. Then the cancer came back. She refused treatment and started doing bucket list stuff. She went to Iceland to see sloths. She went to a water park in Texas. She finally skied Snorkel on Arapahoe Basin’s East Wall. Etcetera, etcetera. She went skiing at A-Basin just 19 days before she passed.

Our little ski crew has raised $23,000 for the V Foundation in the last two winters. It’s all for her. My buddy Jim (he’s the one with the twin purple poms on his helmet in the above photo, we also share a birthday! I met him [and Kimberly, and all those other folks in the photo] on our birthday in the parking lot of A-Basin, that’s a whole other funny ass story for another time) who organizes the trips and fund raising told me today on the chairlift that he wants Kimberly Major to be the next Susan Komen. Lofty goal, to be sure. But we’re doing this annually now, and we’re kicking ass and taking names (money).

That depends. Improving a hopeless district to a narrow loss is spun as a moral victory. We’ve had a couple of those since Trump was elected. They still put fear in the bean counters in the other party, because they can see a less-lopsided district as a loss.

But yeah, you kind of need to win a majority before you can do much if the other party simply won’t compromise.

In this current environment, winning elections is correlated with raising money, usually corporate money. Winning candidates adapt to the environment.

Trying to offer candidates who refuse to take PAC money means you are handicapped in this environment. WIN FIRST….then change the environment.

I read the second book, The Manticore, ages ago when I was in high school. In chorus, we had been singing Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore or The Three Sundays of a Poet and I thought the Davies book was about the mythical creature. I soon discovered my error, but as I recall, the novel was still pretty interesting.

Step 3 - Pledge the ‘Sourtoe Oath’
Step 4 - Watch as a (genuine) dehydrated toe is dropped in your drink

Be sure to remember the most important rule: “You can drink it fast, you can drink it slow, but your lips have gotta touch the toe”

That is appalling and dishonest to the core. Sinclair needs to be brought down. I wish Tom Steyer would buy it out instead of running those Impeach Trump ads.

In re: Owen Benjamin.

He wasn’t thinking about his family when he decided to attack a child that had survived a school shooting that will likely leave him traumatized for the rest of his life, so I have zero sympathy for him losing access to Twitter. He should have thought about his family before he decided to f*ck with David Hogg. In doing so, he painted a target on his account and was begging to be reported. Some persons reported him and now he’s whining about not being able to take care of his family? There’s a solution for his current predicament: He can start submitting apps so he can get a job and take care of his family. It wouldn’t surprise me if his next step is to set up a gofundme page where he can continue complaining and start begging for others to send him money.

You know what also sucks, that these two media bros and those like them refuse to name names. At the end of the day it’s still one big club, and they may be disgusted with their Hessian conservative colleagues but even as they complain about the behavior they pointedly are not burning any bridges.

It’s like a mob racket. Everyone keeps quiet and takes their cut and everything runs smoothly. On the other hand if someone starts snitching…

I just checked out his patreon page. Dude has over a 1000 patrons for over $8000/month.

I am in the wrong line of work.

OK, the other day I finally subscribed here and managed to kick in a little extra too. This isn’t some kind of brag, there’s another point. I was fucking shocked to see that Charles’s go-fund-me had gained approximately as much, over three goddamn years, as the asshole in question above was making per month. I live on a three-figure state pension and a lower three-figure SS check. But I should have donated here long ago,. and I mean to do it as much as I can going forward. This site is like a lifeline to sanity and intelligent humanity for me, living as I do in Shitland Switch, La., surrounded by Trumpoids. All I’m saying is, if you feel at all like I do, let’s try to help Charles as best we can.

I’ve long suspected many pundits don’t believe the BS they spout but do it for cash. Some believe it, some DGAF.

Then you read this and think about Sinclair’s move:
How Trump thrives in ‘news deserts’
Relentless use of social media and partisan outlets helped him swamp Clinton and exceed Romney’s performance in places lacking trusted local news outlets.
By SHAWN MUSGRAVE and MATTHEW NUSSBAUM 04/08/2018 05:00 PM EDT

The local news isn’t perfect but it seems it beats back the lunacy somewhat. Now Sincliar is trying to lock up that info stream. And there’s big business in spouting bullshit and propaganda with a bunch of willing tools doing it for cash.

The only reasonable thing to do about it is drink one of these.

He already set up a Patreon account over the fallout.
