It would be tough to say without analysing which pesticides were used by homeowners from 1965 onward. That would be a huge task for sure, and probably not worth the effort. The only thing that matters is whether the chemical is dangerous enough (where enough is defined by liberals as health and conservatives as profitability) or no.

This story is blowing up right away. Snopes is on it now, with mixed reviews based on what the particular claim is.

The most interesting of the issues to me here isn’t whether the scientific studies are conclusive or no. It’s the graft.

Chlorpyrifos, an insecticide with alleged origins in Nazi Germany, was set to be banned by the EPA over health and environmental safety concerns, but President Trump reversed this decision after Dow Chemicals, a manufacturer of the chemical, donated one million dollars to his inauguration fund.

Rating: Mostly true. (The part about the Nazis developing it is false, though they laid the groundwork in organophosphates.)

They go through each of the claims in that quote. (The million dollars is true. Dow makes the chemical. Is that a quid pro quo? Hard to say.)

I’m not fond of dragging discussions to a new thread, when the old thread is still alive, but here we are.

Not sure why it would be “tough to say” what pesticides were used by homeowners from 1965 on.
It’s not like it was some kind of huge secret back then.

My big pet peeve about this whole Chlorpyrifos discussion, was the initial blaming “lawn owners” as the biggest source for contaminating water.
It just is not true.

Are lawns a significant source of run off pollution? Due to a lack of research, the answer to this question at this time is “maybe”. What is known about run-off pollution and about lawn fertilization and pesticide use trends and behaviors; as well as knowledge of the nutrient cycle, indicates run-off pollution can and does occur from lawns.

Large agricultural interests have for decades tried to shift the environmental damage blame, not just with this particular pesticide but ANY pesticide/herbicide/fungicide/fertilizer, to anyone but itself. And I am confident in making that statement as a longtime farmer extremely familiar with this argument/distraction.

I remember smog alerts, cancelled physical education classes, burning eyes, heavy lungs. Heavy lungs as a kid! The skyline all obscured apart from rare days. I also remember looking up at the layer of tobacco smoke in the room when mom and dad threw a party. Ashtrays all over the place.

Now since gasoline has been cheap in recent years we have muscle cars. Loud, hundreds upon hundreds of horsepower. But no smoke, start easy on cold days and can turn or stop quickly too. All at better mileage.

Add the various mills and mines dumping acids and sludge into the Ohio river. You walk on the bridge between Ambridge and the J&L plant in Aliquippa and see swarms of dead fish floating down the Ohio.

Father arrested after retrieving gun from son’s backpack at school, reports say

Ramon Nuiry’s first mistake was leaving a gun in his 8-year-old son’s school backpack. His second mistake was showing up at the child’s elementary school in Miami-Dade County to retrieve it.

Nuiry, 53, was arrested Thursday at Kendale Lakes Elementary School in southwest Miami-Dade, according to South Florida news reports.

Nuiry admitted to police that he put the loaded gun inside his son’s book bag and forgot to remove it before the boy went to school, WFOR-Ch. 4 reported.

Instead of notifying school officials or police, Nuiry went to the school and asked staff to call his son — with his backpack — to the office.

A parent who saw Nuiry take the gun out of the bag, put it in his waistband and leave the school told school officials who then notified Miami-Dade Schools police, the Miami Herald reported.

Yup, growing up in Pittsburgh in the 1960’s we were told that we never had pollution. The sulfur smell and low hanging yellowish-grey clouds that somehow appeared every morning around 5 when the steel mills fired up, were ‘ground fog’.

And yes, I remember the silvery grey sheen that covered cars some mornings. How the snow turned grey after a couple of days. And all the black soot that would fall out of the window sills when we opened the windows.

Dad had to retire at 63 after working as a welder except for the five years he was disabled in a mill accident. He had major problems breathing when he hit 60 and Drs gave him multiple pulmonary medications. Before he died at the age of 82 he was at the point where he needed oxygen.

And the Republicans want to bring back the glory days when the Cuyahoga River caught fire…

I never really heard about all the accidents in the mills until some friends started working in them. I suspect that there were a lot of accidents. Mostly not publicized as “Not Newsworthy”. It was often hard and dangerous work.

Where I am on the Illinois River, pollution would cling to the river, coming up from St Louis. The valley is about 5-6 miles wide here, and in the 70s you could often not see from the bluffs on one side to the other. Now it is clear and sharp every day.

Look even in the modern pre Trump EPA era, the same one that has made costly mistakes, gone overboard sometimes there is still too much damage being done.

Often the problem isn’t the agency, but trying to figure out who the polluters are (after successors/mergers/acquisitions/bankruptcies) and getting someone to pay. Then there are the scientific challenges to figure out how to remediate and to what level.

The best way to deal with Superfund sites is to make sure new ones don’t occur and that we minimize the point source pollution. Then we need to get the existing list of sites funded to begin cleanup there as well.

A few towns over we’ve got a Ford paint dump that created a toxic legacy there. In another town, a company dumped hexavalent chromium, and it’s leached into groundwater and is extremely toxic.

Oh, a few towns over from that one, you’ve got a former Dupont munitions plant where they did all kinds of tests and there are all manner of chemicals leaching into the water.

That’s just within a 20 mile sweep of Northern NJ off the top of my head.

When Dad got out of high school he spent 2 years in the CCC then he went to welding school in East Pittsburgh PA. He was able to do speciality welding and during the war he worked at the Charleston Navy Yard. After the war, Dad worked at the HH Robertson plant in Ambridge PA at the same time as one Charlie Buchinsky (A.K.A. Charles Bronson). Dad was repairing a rolling machine when another employee turned the machine on and Dad’s right arm was crushed. He had to have multiple operations to put his arm back together. Five years he was on worker comp and State Disability (There was no Social Security disability until Eisenhower expanded the benefits in the 50s). After that Dad worked as a guard at the plant until he just couldn’t take the abuse any more from them and he took up welding again, getting a Boilermakers Union card.

I experienced a misfit first hand. Think jewelry building. And regulations for emissions and waste run by the generator aka each enterprise running. Each of those too small to be regulated. But in the basement plumbing it all came together just as if one big 13 story factory.

if you want a permit to process your waste you can do that. but not for someone else’s. The building could not legally treat the stream of water from upstairs. Because they could not account for all that went in like the generators could. Impasse. Act of Congress impasse.

In short we compromised, and everyone that wants to mfg does, and the waste streams are well taken care of.

Hey, I’m back. Just got back from Snowmass Mountain for a weekend of skiing with a motley crew I’ve been skiing with for about four winters now. We raised almost 10 grand for the V Foundation in honor of our dearly departed member of the ski crew Kimberly, who died of cervical cancer two years ago, she was only 44. Her favorite color was purple, so the crew got all dolled in purple yesterday and went skiing! You couldn’t miss us, lots of people took pictures when we went in the lodge for lunch.

I’m the one with the glasses. I commissioned my mother to crochet the hat and scarf. I auctioned the hat at the apres ski party we put on and threw that 50 bucks into the charity.

Best part? It snowed a foot last night. Wet heavy snow, but I’ll take it! Fun was had by all.

Her battle with cancer was freaky. Stage 4 diagnosis, given the whole six months talk. She goes through treatment and goes into remission. Only 3% of Stage 4 diagnosis patients go into remission. So she got to live for two more years. Then the cancer came back. She refused treatment and started doing bucket list stuff. She went to Iceland to see sloths. She went to a water park in Texas. She finally skied Snorkel on Arapahoe Basin’s East Wall. Etcetera, etcetera. She went skiing at A-Basin just 19 days before she passed.

Our little ski crew has raised $23,000 for the V Foundation in the last two winters. It’s all for her. My buddy Jim (he’s the one with the twin purple poms on his helmet in the above photo, we also share a birthday! I met him [and Kimberly, and all those other folks in the photo] on our birthday in the parking lot of A-Basin, that’s a whole other funny ass story for another time) who organizes the trips and fund raising told me today on the chairlift that he wants Kimberly Major to be the next Susan Komen. Lofty goal, to be sure. But we’re doing this annually now, and we’re kicking ass and taking names (money).

That depends. Improving a hopeless district to a narrow loss is spun as a moral victory. We’ve had a couple of those since Trump was elected. They still put fear in the bean counters in the other party, because they can see a less-lopsided district as a loss.

But yeah, you kind of need to win a majority before you can do much if the other party simply won’t compromise.

Sinclair Broadcast Group has agreed to air a commercial from a progressive watchdog that’s critical of the broadcaster’s actions.

But Allied Progress called foul Sunday.

Sinclair began running the 30-second spot with a 15-second defense of Sinclair, followed by the Allied Progress 30-second ad, and then another 15-second of Sinclair’s voiceover: “The misleading ad you just saw focused on a brief promotional message that simply said we’re a source for truthful news. It ignored thousands of hours of local news we produce each year to keep you informed. The ad was purchased by a group known for its liberal bias, and we hope you won’t buy into the hysteria and hype.”
