Local News: More Than 100 Stranded Motorists Rescued During Spring Storm, One Fatality (goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, more at the link, with trucks scattered about I-80 near Sidney):
Blizzard conditions caused major problems for drivers in Western Nebraska Friday, leaving many stranded on Interstate 80 and other highways, the Nebraska State Patrol said Saturday.
In total, more than 100 motorists were rescued, Cody Thomas, public relations director with the Nebraska State Patrol said. Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP), working with the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office, Sidney Police Department, Sidney Public Schools, Cheyenne County Emergency Management, the Nebraska Department of Transportation, and others, worked to clear all of the stranded vehicles.
There were two major areas where vehicles had become trapped on I-80 near Sidney. One section was more than a mile and a half long and the other section was estimated to have at least 50 vehicles. Sidney Public Schools offered buses to assist in the rescue, which were escorted to the scene by patrol vehicles and snow plows.
The assembled law enforcement officers went door to door, knocking on all vehicles and rescuing all of the occupants in freezing temperatures. The rescued motorists were taken to Light Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sidney or to a hotel of their choice.
More were rescued in stranded cars on other roads.

I just got notification that one of the nearby towns is suspending snowplow operations because conditions are too dangerous to continue. When it’s too dangerous for the plow trucks, you know it’s bad.
Good thing I don’t need to be anywhere today:
Road conditions remain poor to impassible in many parts of central to western Nebraska.
As of Saturday morning, Interstate 80 remain closed to westbound traffic from Grand Island to the Wyoming state line. Eastbound I-80 is closed from the Wyoming state line to Ogallala.

We’re getting blasted up here today too. It’s been snowing since about 7:00 last night. Right now I can barely see anything more than half a block away. Current projections from the west side of the Twin Cities is that it should be done snowing in my town some time tomorrow night or early Monday morning, with the snowfall abating significantly by noon or 1:00 on Sunday.
“…The dossier alleges that Cohen, two Russians and several Eastern European hackers met at the Prague office of a Russian government-backed social and cultural organization, Rossotrudnichestvo. re: #14 Anymouse 🌹
Your mentioning Ogallala brought up a memory from a long time ago. In the early 60’s I was traveling in February going east-bound on US 30 (before I 80 was built) in a massive blizzard. I was driving my 57 Chevy convertible and the wind from the south billowed up the canvas top allowing the snow to fly right in to the car. There was 6 inches of snow on the passenger seat. The heater could not keep up. I picked up a guy who had slid into the ditch. He would have froze to death if I hadn’t stopped. I think that was the coldest I’ve ever been.
After finally getting into Ogallala and getting a motel room I went across the street to the local cafe for dinner. That cafe served a T-bone steak that was large enough to hang over the sides of a regular dinner plate. Also a similar sized plate of french fries came with the meal. All for $1.75. And it was a good steak. I have never had a steak dinner like that since.

On Thursday, I opened up my snowblower and found why it had stopped operating during the previous snowstorm. Bought a belt for it, had to have it shipped overnight because it would have been next week with standard shipping. I walked into the dealer and told him who I was and what I was there for. He gave me a knowing smirk and said, “I bet this is for a snowblower, and you’re expecting snow. That’s why you had it overnighted.”

I’m sure Cohen doesn’t travel with large amounts of cash so he probably used a credit card. Mueller has all his CC info. Easy to find an expenditure in a foreign country thus providing a date the card was used. With the date in hand it would be easy to find security video showing him using the card.

We need a wall between Arizona and New Mexico. We had so much Arizona blowing in during the last two days, I think NM is an inch taller and AZ is an inch shorter. If it was San Francisco, it would have been fog. It looked like the smog in So. Cal. in the 70s. Today is nice and clear. The mountains have reappeared. The thing is, you can train a computer to detect specific words and phrases, but when they start speaking in euphemisms and using dogwhistles, how’s a computer going to know? Either somebody has to keep it up-to-date, or it has to be smart enough to learn when a person is using a certain word/phrase/sentence in a pejorative fashion.

It is no surprise that the most strongly pro-Russian elements of the right wing, especially including conspiracy media figures like Jones and Cernovich and paleo-right isolationists like Rand Paul, would split with Trump over the Syria strikes. The Kremlin OWNS the conspiracy industry after all.
It remains to be seen whether they will patch things up, but there is some chance the split will become permanent, especially where the paleo-right is concerned. It all depends on whether this is kayfabe or a genuine Molotov-Ribbentrop moment.
In his ignorance and narcissism Trump is likely to see this opposition as disloyalty, since he does not understand that Russian support is about weakening America and not about strengthening him personally. The Kremlin and its agents side with Trump only so long as he plays their game and they will abandon him in a heartbeat if he does otherwise. For his part, Trump may lash out with his usual disregard for the law. It would be ironic indeed if Russian agents and conspira-liars had to count on the hated ACLU and Democrats to rescue them from FEMA camp or worse. Personally, I won’t break a leg to do that, so long as the precedent can be discredited.

re: #79 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.
Too expensive, from FB’s point of view. That would involve actually doing something about the problem. Zuckerberg wants a magic solution to just fall into his lap.
And that would help, but it wouldn’t be a panacea. Define everything everything that is antisemitic in a way that we’ll all agree on. Define everything anti-Islam. Define everything racist or misogynist. Now, make people follow it.
When Google developed a system for recognizing and classifying images, some researchers decided to see how good they were versus humans. Here’s what one of them found out:
…the task of labeling images with 5 out of 1000 categories quickly turned out to be extremely challenging, even for some friends in the lab who have been working on ILSVRC [ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Competition] and its classes for a while. First we thought we would put it up on [Amazon Mechanical Turk]. Then we thought we could recruit paid undergrads. Then I organized a labeling party of intense labeling effort only among the (expert labelers) in our lab. Then I developed a modified interface that used GoogLeNet predictions to prune the number of categories from 1000 to only about 100. It was still too hard - people kept missing categories and getting up to ranges of 13-15% error rates. In the end I realized that to get anywhere competitively close to GoogLeNet, it was most efficient if I sat down and went through the painfully long training process and the subsequent careful annotation process myself… The labeling happened at a rate of about 1 per minute, but this decreased over time… Some images are easily recognized, while some images (such as those of fine-grained breeds of dogs, birds, or monkeys) can require multiple minutes of concentrated effort. I became very good at identifying breeds of dogs… Based on the sample of images I worked on, the GoogLeNet classification error turned out to be 6.8%… My own error in the end turned out to be 5.1%, approximately 1.7% better.
Edit: I meant to actually write something about this.
Throwing humans at it will also have problems.

FBI Probing Whether Russia Used Cultural Junkets to Recruit American Intelligence Assets
“…Since 2001, Zaytsev’s organization, Rossotrudnichestvo, has footed the bill for about 130 young Americans—including political aides, nonprofit advocates, and business executives—to visit Russia. Along with Portwood, Mother Jones has spoken to two other Rossotrudnichestvo participants who were questioned by the FBI about Zaytsev, who also heads the Russian Cultural Center in Washington.
RossotrudnichestvoThe FBI agents “have been very up front about” their investigation into whether Zaytsev is a Russian intelligence agent, says a 24-year-old nonprofit worker whom the FBI has interviewed twice and who asked not to be identified. The FBI agents, according to this source, said, “We’re investigating Yury for spying activities. We just want to know what interactions you’ve had with him.”

Nope…
I went and looked and did some numbers. Germany has about 40 million people online and about 1200 people who review content. The US has about 214 million people online. If you assume the content grows linearly, you would need approximately 6000 people. Facebook currently has about 25K employees in the US. I’m not sure how many of those involve reviewing content, but I suspect it’s a smaller fraction considering our laws protecting companies here.
re: #84 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel
Addendum:
I don’t advocate lynch law or political violence of any kind but I have to admit that I would laugh my ass off if I saw a Trump-incited ammosexual/tea party mob rioting outside the InfoWars studio.

“…The narrative that will become widely understood is that Donald Trump did not sit atop a global empire. He was not an intuitive genius and tough guy who created billions of dollars of wealth through fearlessness. He had a small, sad operation, mostly run by his two oldest children and Michael Cohen, a lousy lawyer who barely keeps up the pretenses of lawyering and who now faces an avalanche of charges, from taxicab-backed bank fraud to money laundering and campaign-finance violations.
Cohen, Donald, Jr., and Ivanka monetized their willingness to sign contracts with people rejected by all sensible partners. Even in this, the Trump Organization left money on the table, taking a million dollars here, five million there, even though the service they provided—giving branding legitimacy to blatantly sketchy projects—was worth far more. It was not a company that built value over decades, accumulating assets and leveraging wealth. It burned through whatever good will and brand value it established as quickly as possible, then moved on to the next scheme.
There are important legal questions that remain. How much did Donald Trump and his children know about the criminality of their partners? How explicit were they in agreeing to put a shiny gold brand on top of corrupt deals? The answers to these questions will play a role in determining whether they go to jail and, if so, for how long.”

An almost axiom of machine learning right now is that you can train a program to learn just about anything if you’re given enough data. I’m sure Zuckerberg, in his libertarianismness, figures that data collection is just a means to an end. If he weren’t willing to sell it for more money, the data would probably be used to solve problems like which corner is the best one to put like buttons in. But, even if, at a minimum, you take the “I accept” check box to mean he can collect all of your data, going after non-facebook people should be off limits.

Mike, I was a huge fan of CART IndyCar racing. You’re homespun Hoosiers messed up the Indy 500 Month of May and the sport.
The narrow-minded, all-about-Indiana thinking had no room for others in America to have a place in the sport’s operations. But it was actual racers in CART that made the sport what it was for 16 years and actually added professional punch to the 500.
So Hoosiers took back control and the rest of the sport outside your 500 is of little note in the sporting world any more. Even the 500 doesn’t draw the eyes of America. Simple fact.
You couldn’t work together and now you have Hoosier control of one race. Which I guess is what it always was anyway.
The crowds for the month were down in 1997. One year after the big Hulman-George power move.
They remain down and they do everything they can to make the month as big as it used to be. So, you are lying.
And by the way Mike. You were saying adultery was the worst of the infractions in the 10 Commandments.
And you still took a job with a know adulterer. Mike I think you are a religious zealot that is full of lies and a massive hypocrite. Take that up with your God.

ABC News -Gun rights advocates rally at state capitols across US
Gun rights supporters — many carrying rifles and ammunition — gathered at state capitols across the U.S. on Saturday to push back against efforts to pass stricter gun-control laws that they fear threaten their constitutional right to bear arms.
From Delaware to Wyoming, hundreds gathered at peaceful protests to listen to speakers who warned that any restrictions on gun ownership or use eventually could lead to a ban on gun ownership, which is guaranteed under the Second Amendment.
“If you have a building and you take a brick out every so often, after a while you’re not going to have a building,” said Westley Williams, who carried an AR-15 rifle as he joined about 100 people braving blustery weather in Cheyenne, Wyoming, for a pro-gun-rights rally in front of the state supreme court building.
Dave Gulya, one of the organizers of a rally in Augusta, Maine, said about 800 people showed up at the statehouse — a gun-free zone — to make the point that “we are law-abiding.”
Saturday’s protests were planned in dozens of state capitols less than three weeks after hundreds of thousands marched in Washington, New York and elsewhere to demand tougher gun laws after the February school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17. Organizers of those protests demanded a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and called for universal background checks on potential gun owners.
During a pro-gun-rights gathering in Atlanta on Saturday, more than a quarter of the estimated 160 rally-goers carried weapons, as well as flags and signs saying “Don’t Tread On Me” as they listened to speakers talk about the right to bear arms. A few people wearing “Black Lives Matter” T-shirts showed up at the rally and made videos, but didn’t interact with the rally-goers.

yep
Good news, HB 227 to kill the solar energy industry in Kentucky, which the utilities heavily lobbied for, died on the last day of the session today because it didn’t have the votes. The people beat the money for a change!
Why it might be harder to flip conservatives on the Plains than it might appear:
Consider the 200 counties that had the strongest per capita income growth nationwide from 2000 to 2016.3 More than 60 percent of those counties — 122 — are designated “completely rural” by the U.S. Census Bureau. And the vast majority of those — 99 — lie in a vertical band of 10 states that stretch from North Dakota and Montana south to New Mexico and Texas.4 That’s five times what you’d expect from chance alone; rural counties in this region make up just 10 percent of all counties nationwide, but nearly half of the top 200 with the highest income growth.5
Look to rural areas elsewhere in the country, and it’s a different story. The median change in per capita income for the rural counties in the band was 38 percent, compared with just 21 percent for all the rural counties outside of that area. Only two rural counties in the entire area that stretches from Mississippi across to Florida and up to Delaware6 even crack the list of the top 200. Nebraska alone has six in the top 10. Use of force by @realDonaldTrump against Syria is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. This is not self defense & no AUMF covers it. Use of chemical weapons is horrific. But our Constitution does not allow @POTUS to attack a country—which has not attacked the US—without Congressional approval. https://t.co/frC6XaizX5

You are a moron. War Powers Act of 1973 clearly allows a President 60 days to use military force until having to go in front of Congress. Every President has used this authority constitutionally over the past 40 years, including Obama where you stayed selectively silent. https://t.co/4aGlmfmAx1

Dang. I can hear the ice cream truck.
There are no ice cream trucks here, but the street cleaning trucks — for no apparent reason — play “Silent Night” and “We Wish a Merry Christmas” year round. In other cities, the jingle is usually “It’s a Small World,” which I remember hearing for the first time at the NY World’s Fair in 1964. It followed me across time and space. Dammit.

Move here. We have no street cleaning trucks in my town, because we have no paved streets. Cheaper that way.

Not likely to happen. As Charles notes, allowing people to post links to your content in their FB status drives traffic to your site. My WordPress site has a plugin that automatically re-posts a snippet of each blog to my FB page, for example. Sad to say, ignoring FB would be like ignoring Amazon or Google.
Well, strictly, we have one paved street (US-26), but the state will close it soon for resurfacing. I presume all the detour traffic will be directed over our dirt streets.
re: #206 wheat-dogg
Street Cleaning Day (Welcome to Night Vale):
The most important strategy for surviving Street Cleaning Day is to run. RUN. FORGET YOUR CHILDREN AND LEAVE BEHIND THE WEAK. RUN. Night Vale has contacted those experts who have not already gone underground or changed their identity, and has been told that Street Cleaners focus on heat and movement, and so the best strategy is to be dead already. If you have doors, lock them. If you have windows, board them up. If you still have ears, cover them, and crouch wherever you are. PLEASE, REMAIN CALM.
Very little is known about it aside from the fact that it is extremely dangerous to living citizens. Common known ways to avoid being eradicated by Street Cleaning Day include: hiding in enclosed areas, leaving Night Vale temporarily, and faking one’s own death.
The street cleaners occasionally run at night here. When they do, my kid and I do the mock panic required.

See? Sometimes I can come up with good ideas.
The history of “It’s a Small World (After All),” courtesy of Wikipedia.
en.wikipedia.org
The original idea for the UNICEF pavilion at the 1964 World’s Fair was for each doll (each representing a nationality) to sing its national anthem. The end result was an acoustic mess. Walt Disney recommended a simple song that could be translated into different languages, and the result was “It’s Small World (After All).” The composers were the Sherman Brothers, who had written scads of songs for Disney motion pictures.
According to Wikipedia, the song has been played at least 50 million times. I’d argue that’s a conservative estimate.

I’m not rooting for McCain to die before May 30, but he hasn’t been able to do his job since December, and the right thing for him to do is to resign if he can’t do his job, instead of trying to hold out so that his constituents don’t have a choice in who replaces him for two more years.

I don’t think it was a typo. One of the search results was “ixquick” which went to “izquick.com”
Anyway, I tried both—“izquick” was a blank page and “ixquick” was “Server Not Found”. They both said “ww1”. Am I on the wrong series of tubes internet?

According to WorldIP (a FFox extension), both show as located in the US, and typically the reverse DNS lookup produces no result, altho it did once for the ixquick tab. At that time, the IPV4 addresses were alike except for the final 8bits [edit]. At no time did either appear to be located in Switzerland.
