So I turned in an episode of The Orville a bit ago. Mid episode. I have to say, the acting is horrible, like over the top bad.

How did this get good ratings?

Is it supposed to be bad like this?

Came home from the gym tonight. Waiting for the bus. I get on and there is a guy in a wheelchair coated with Trump stickers and he has his MAGA hat on.

He’s a double amputee, both legs amputated below the knee.

Yelling about how he loves his President.

Complaining about…you guessed it…all them Mexicans crossing the border to get on welfare.

“I loves my President cause he stands up for white people”.

I couldn’t resist it. I gladly reminded Wheelchair Wimpy that the House just voted to cut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

“They ain’t gonna cut my check! I earned my check. Republicans will just kick them Mexicans off off welfare and I’ll be better off”.

My reply, “When your check is cut, remember that I warned you…” and I got off of the bus.

He was just HAHAHAHA!

I told him that if I ever saw him again, I would toss him into the Gulf of Mexico, and I made sure he understood that I was completely serious. He seemed to think that since I was ex-military that I would be “So cool! Where can I get one!”.

I talked to the Company Man and he was off the rig the next morning. I stood on the helipad and gave him the one finger salute as he left. I hope that sonofabitch has since died of ball cancer.

Canada Could Make It Harder for the US to Win Fighter Jet Bid

Canada is considering whether to penalize companies from countries that have caused it economic damage, the sources said on Wednesday. While a final decision is not expected before next year and the threat could be posturing, the move shows how the Trump administration’s trade disputes are spilling over into other areas.

A spokeswoman for federal Procurement Minister Carla Qualtrough - who has overall responsibility for major purchases of military equipment - declined to comment. Sources declined to be identified as the discussions are confidential.

Boeing Co’s (BA.N) F-18 Super Hornet and Lockheed Martin Corp’s (LMT.N) F-35 fighter were among the favorites to capture the contract to supply 88 planes, worth between C$15 billion ($11.3 billion) and C$19 billion.

Defense sources have long said the Canadian air force would prefer an American-built jet, citing the importance of operating easily with U.S. armed forces.

Attorneys for former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort want a judge to bar any mention of Manafort’s connections to the president at his Virginia trial. In court papers, Manafort’s lawyers argue that because Manafort’s alleged crimes occurred before he ever served on President Trump’s campaign, any mention of Manafort’s connections to Mr. Trump are irrelevant.

What hold has trump on these people that they want to protect him. Is this how they ask for a pardon?

Yikes.

The last time we were in Denver, I got lost and wound up on a road in Commerce City that dead-ended into E-470. I was trying to puzzle out the tolling system, decided I didn’t want to take a risk from the cops over electronic tolling when I don’t have such a box (and really didn’t understand their license plate tolling), and wasted a bunch of time trying to work my way back around on Denver’s surface streets.

I queried the toll road commission about how the turnpike’s license plate tolling works. All they would tell me in about six E-mails is they would rather I buy a tolling pass. I might use a toll road in Colorado once every three years so I finally cut off that frustrating conversation.

This time, coming back from Colorado Springs last night, I decided to take E-470 from I-25 to I-76. (At noon going south I-25 was a Dumpster fire of stop-and-go traffic.) The road was mostly empty (which was soothing to my nerves driving I-25 south then north). No one arrested me with my out-of-state tag, so I guess I am okay.

Their Website says they will mail a bill for the toll, but I wonder how much they lose out in tolling on the turnpike from states which will not share DMV information (such as Massachusetts), people with obscured or missing license plates (there were several cars on the turnpike with either no tags or temporary tags in the windows), &c.

I’ve driven E-470 exactly once because I was driving a buddy of mine to DIA and we were running super late. This was from southeast Denver metro, the OG E-470 that’s been there for decades now. My buddy made the flight, needless to say. If I recall it was seven dollars? I don’t know, this was way earlier in this decade, when I lived in Denver.

Just went to the E470 website. If they are diligent (which I’m sure they are) you will be billed $17.30.

I’m looking at the toll rate table now. Sections A and C are $4.15 and sections B and D are $4.50.

With the thousands of different types of license plates in North America, could they all be programmed into their computers? Then there’s the issue of folk around the Air Force Academy who have European tags (I had Spanish plates on my car for several months after I came back from Spain).

It seems to me in the rush to embrace technology (to get rid of toll collectors - wages), they are missing a lot of tolls. Perhaps I just am not up to speed on modern technology though.

(I live in an area where the computer shop doesn’t take credit cards … cash, cheque, or money orders only.)

Republican prankster booted from Texas Democratic convention
The “prankster” was State Rep Briscoe Cain, R-Deer Park, and his “prank” involved carrying a gun into the venue. He and a co-conspirator, a paid stooge consultant, also tried to pass out fake yard signs reading “This home is a gun-free safe space.” He and the stooge came back after being thrown out once, at which point they were questioned by Fort Worth police. Unfortunately they were not arrested.

You might be right.

My own plates are extremely rare in Nebraska. (That doesn’t mean the toll road commission doesn’t know what they are though.)

The Website says it takes a picture of the front and back of your car to determine your registration. Presumably from a state with no front plate, the front picture is useless. If the rear picture was blurred or obscured (even if the plate is not obscured), that would be another toll missed.

Plus I wonder how many mis-tolls they’ve done (the computer recognized the registration number wrong), causing a bill to be sent to the wrong person? That would be a headache to fix.

Someone made a bunch of money on those cameras and computers though.

There is electronic tolling on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) in Chicago, which they’ve had for many years. Those tolling plazas also have people who accept cash (just not very many).

Going to visit my mother, I use I-294 to get to her house in NW Chicago. They don’t miss any tolls from me.

I-76 rides rougher than our dirt streets though all the way from Denver to Sterling. US-138 in Sterling is even worse. (I was glad to get on C-113 going to Sidney; that two-lane road was better than anything except E-470 in Colorado).

This piece of shit Trump supporter will still vote for him despite losing hundreds of thousands due to Trump’s tariffs because he’ll blame it all on “illegal immigrants.”

I was listening to NPR in the car the other day. They were talking about how lobster pots used to be made from wood, but are now primarily made from aluminum and steel wire, because those hold up better.

China has imposed tariffs on imported American lobster, so there’s one hit to the industry.

Another: They were interviewing the largest lobster pot manufacturer in the USA, who has a virtual monopoly on the industry here. He is worried about tariffs increasing his products for lobster fishermen so much they will purchase less and thus hurt his business. He noted companies and people who buy aluminum and steel are busy trying to buy as much as they can now before those tariffs go into effect.

He also noted the tariffs apply to raw materials, not finished products. As such, a French company is moving to try to put him out of business by importing finished lobster pots. (The company didn’t make them before.)

Yes, he still supports Trump.

His solution: He says he’s praying every night this will work out so he doesn’t have to lay off his twenty or so workers and shutter his business.

Such people seem to be unreachable. Clutching their Cheeto Messiah and praying doesn’t seem to be a good business plan.

It is the “both siderists” that need to be reached, and those who sit out elections thinking the government doesn’t affect them.

Of course. The ones who have the money figure these tariffs won’t hurt them, while the ones who don’t will be told that the rising costs have nothing to do with the tariffs and everything to do with “them illegals” suppressing wage growth by taking “good jobs” and getting paid under the table.

And in the meantime, crops will rot in the fields because the work is too hard and pays too little for real ‘Muricans and people will bitch about the price of food going up.

A couple years ago when Alabama passed its version of Arizona’s “papers please” law, tomato farmers wound up plowing under their crops, because even offering $50 an hour they could not get people into the fields to pick tomatoes.

It turns out if you have a regular job somewhere, you’re not going to quit it for a three-week season in the fields, even at $50. Migrant farm workers are migrants precisely because they travel across the country for different harvest seasons. You can’t have an office job or something and also be a farm worker. Capitalism doesn’t work that way.

Ayep. IIRC, they had to eventually resort to prison labor being forced into working as farm hands just to avoid a total disaster. But there still isn’t enough prison labor in the entirety of the state to cover all the jobs.

Airbus Warns It Might Leave the Country Ahead of Brexit (goes to Airways Magazine).

Airbus manufactures its wings for aircraft in the United Kingdom. It notes if the Conservative Party can’t get its act together on coming to some agreement with the EU over Brexit, it stands to lose tens of billions of Euros if it has to pay tariffs to ship those parts in from the UK.

Conservatives at Westminster are like conservatives everywhere: They are looking for the quick fix to maintain their grip on power. They would rather see Airbus go and billions of pounds sterling in trade evaporate (along with employment) than cave in to the obvious solution over the referendum for Brexit: Abandon it.

Even though it has been shown now the Brexit vote was rodent couplated the same way our election was, conservatives will not relinquish their grip on power. Theresa May has staked her reputation on this, and she’ll take the whole economy with her if she has to.

This is the Confederate model of governance. Literally the only legitimate function of government is to make sure enough able-bodied men are incarcerated to meet the capitalists’ demand for labor, at a rate just sufficient to cover the costs of their imprisonment. “No taxation for internal improvements!”, so this is the only way roads or bridges or whatever can be built—toll roads and bridges, of course. (Per the earlier discussion, I would never use a toll road, period. I had no idea they existed west of the Appalachians.)

The adult son of Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker has been accused of sexual assault by a woman on a JetBlue flight Wednesday.

The incident allegedly happened on flight 1354 from Washington, D.C., to Boston, according to Boston ABC affiliate WCVB.

“On June 20, the crew of flight 1354 were notified of an incident between customers shortly before landing in Boston,” JetBlue said in a statement. “The aircraft landed at approximately 11 p.m. local time where it was met by local authorities.”

A woman on the flight accused Andrew Baker, known as A.J., of inappropriate touching, WCVB reported.

That could be tough. Adopting a treaty in the USA requires two thirds vote of the Senate and signed by the President. Any treaty which violates US laws is unenforceable in respect to the infringing sections.

The USA completed roughly sixteen thousand international agreements from the end of WW2 to the end of the XX Century. Of those, 912 are treaties.

The GOP has been opposing the Law of the Sea treaty ever since it was proposed, on the grounds it impinges on US sovereignty (it would subject maritime disputes to international resolution).

The writer was horrified to learn what Facebook actually knows about you. Apparently, it is easier to both obtain your data and delete your account under the EU’s new privacy law than it is in the USA.

To tell you the truth, I have never been the kind of person to worry too much about my personal data online. I know it’s concerning, but trying to do anything about it just feels pointless. Where are we even supposed to start?

I’m 28, and I’ve spent most of my life online. I got a Hotmail account at 10, my first phone at 11, and a Facebook account at 16. I must have given so much personal information away (let alone all the embarrassing drunk photos I posted online while at uni) that it’s easier to live in denial and not think about it.

But when the news came out that Facebook had passed on data of up to 87 million of its members to political consultancy Cambridge Analytica without their knowledge - and one in 20 Brits were reported to delete their accounts - I started to wonder just how much information the social network had on me.

For the first time in my online life, I decided to face up to my data and download everything Facebook had on me.

An interesting family story (at least to me).

My wife received in the mail handmade silver jewellery and other presents from a woman she does not know as a gift yesterday. The story behind that… .

My brother-in-law and his wife travelled to Northfield, Minnesota. They went to visit the city historical museum, particularly their information about the James-Younger gang.

My wife and her brother are related to John and Cole Younger.

When my brother told the museum curator he was a scion of the Younger family, she announced it to the whole museum. A crowd surrounded him asking for the Younger side of the Northfield bank robbery story.

He made a short florid speech, apologising to the town on behalf of the Younger family. (From that the jeweller in question gave his wife some of her wares and mailed some to my wife.)

It turns out the town has a celebration and parade every year over its defeat of the James-Younger gang. (My brother-in-law put it as “they take a long time to get over a grudge.”)

My wife suggested to him that perhaps they can be “grand marshals” of the town’s next celebration (or perhaps the town’s “grand heels”).

Speaking of miscegeny… I learnt that after WWII, the Nazis began using the word “culture” instead of “race” to stay under the radar. So what a Nazi means when he says “multiculturalism” is “multiracialism”, or miscegenation.

And there are other codewords which are varying degrees of cloaked. There are some which basically are anglified Third Reich terms.

Russia and China have already agreed to trade oil and natgas for Chinese yuan, and not the “petrodollar” commonly used by OPEC nations. If that idea catches on, the US dollar will suffer bigly.

As for T-bills, if China sells theirs, someone else will buy them on the open market. Cashing out and not buying anymore would just mean someone else would buy them. China uses those T-bills to manage its foreign reserves to keep the yuan “cheap.” So I’m not sure it’s going to give up T-bills any time soon.

But China has lots of other ways to inflict economic pain on the USA.

Criswell Bacon has been predicting that Trump will piss the rest of the world off to the point that nobody outside the US will buy Treasury securities! That will trigger a meltdown in DC

re: #80 Anymouse 🌹

The opiate of the masses turns people into asses…

It’s possible, for sure, considering how Trump has managed to piss off our allies with his “trade war” BS and refusal to take NATO, NAFTA, TPP, and all our other treaties seriously. T-bills are one of the props that keep the national economy going. If other nations wanted to punish the USA, they could just refuse to buy any more of our debt instruments.

(I live in an area where the computer shop doesn’t take credit cards … cash, cheque, or money orders only.)

one of my last toll booth experiences was heading to New York from a Massachusetts job interview. Not only was there a guy in the booth, but I asked him how far Albany was. This was long before Garmin came along. If you wanted to know where the hell you were, you asked. He gave me good information. I believe I spent the night in Cobleskill, which is on an interstate route that has some of the most beautiful mountain scenery you could ask for.

And yet, this is also part of why so many kids never get adopted - why go to the emotional cost of bonding with a child who has spent months/years in the foster system if that child can be ripped away from you at any time?

This is a big reason why we chose to adopt internationally rather than from someone here in the US/Wisconsin. The danger of this kind of lawsuit - the majority of which the birth parent wins - was simply too great.

So Russia and China are making bilateral trade agreements.

Yes. And even with written release, birth parents have up to a year to change their minds. Because sometimes birth mothers (especially teenage girls with asshole parents) are pressured into signing something that’s not entirely voluntary, and maybe the birth father doesn’t even find out about until a couple of years later.

This is a big part of their anti-abortion obsession. “If you don’t want your child, someone else does. We’ll force you to take it to term so somebody else who can’t make their own can have it.”

Partly because of legalized abortion, and partly because single moms aren’t ostracized the way they used to be, there’s huge long waiting lists for healthy white infants. Nowhere near enough for all the would-be adoptive parents, that’s why African and Asian adoptions became common.

Wow. Thanks for the nostalgia hit today. For many years we used to enjoy reading, on Saturdays, the New York Times’ publishing of the week’s “dirty food list” of City Health violations for NY restaurants. While the vast majority were for trivial items (at least to our eyes) and mainly on fast-food joints in the Outer Boroughs, occasionally we’d spot a swanky four-star eatery get the black mark: though fortunately, rarely any place WE frequented…

Though after a series of unsurprising scandals broke about certain -ummm, - irregularities in the inspection system (hint: Benjamin Franklin was involved), the Times - no doubt to the relief of the City’s restaurant industry - stopped publishing the DFL.
Sad.

The mother never gave up her rights to her own child. She tried to fight the whole thing and a Missouri judge basically told her to fuck off.

I wouldn’t care if it was 10 or 20 years old. Our Justice system is fucked when it allows that.

I obviously have rise colored glasses in so far as my concept of what America is.

You’re fine. I was just making it clear it wasn’t Trump.

But here is where Trump is saying he can do it because it was done before. This is his wiggle room.

And yes, it is all bad when it comes to separating children from parents.

Proper headline:

Hundreds of primates flock to Museum of Zoology after opening by Sir David Attenborough

Years and years ago, I was at the Portland Zoo with a good friend of mine, and we got to the primate section, I told her, “You know, maybe they should be a typical family of four in here too - behind glass, maybe watching TV or eating dinner or playing video games or something. It would kinda round out the whole primate experience, wouldn’t it?”

Maybe something like this:

She started laughing maniacally, so much so that people were looking at us.

Long, long ago, when I was a mere youth, we always seemed to have a cat or two around. One of my aunts also loved cats and had a house full of them.

Anyway, catnip would grow around the area occasionally (it has been widely spread in North America since being introduced) and I remember we had one plant growing by the side of the house.

The cats did react differently to it.

I guess some cats are pickier than others for their drug of choice.

I went to the farmer’s market, got some tamales for later (they grow on bushes around here), a chocolate chip brownie, then on my way out, there was a table staffed by the high school marching band, selling more brownies. I refrained and went for the Misleading Cookies. They look like biscuits, and taste like a combo biscuit/cookie. There’s already a Wikipedia update on Katie Arrington’s car accident.

On Friday, June 22, 2018, Arrington was seriously injured in an accident when a driver going the wrong way on a highway struck her vehicle. Arrington suffered a back fracture and broken ribs and had to have portions of her small intestine and colon removed. Joe Cunningham, Arrington’s Democratic general election opponent, announced that he would suspend his campaign out of respect for Arrington and her recovery.

Damn. That’s some serious injuries. Granted, I’d certainly never vote for her, or someone like her, but I hope she makes a full recovery. And kudos to Joe Cunningham for a genuine display of class.

People are getting nuttier by the minute. Katie Arrington (the one who beat Mark Sanford in the primary) was in a car accident last night—she survived but has some horrendous injuries; the driver of the other car died. And already there are conspiracy theorists out all over the place claiming it was a DNC hit, an “illegal M-13,” a Hillary minion did it, etc.

Sometimes a car wreck is just a car wreck. Jeez.

And if it had been the Democrat in the race who was injured, I’m sure there would be just as much nonsensical CT BS out on the ‘Net. Same (looney-) tune, different band.
But definitely a bummer for Ms. Arrington: those injuries are going to take quite a while to heal: even if elected, come January, she’s likely to be sworn in in a wheelchair - an ordeal the voters of SC-01 ought to seriously consider sparing her…..

So, came across this - a good article regarding the Pike County, OH murders; a case which remains unsolved over two years later.

The murder of the Rhoden family was a brutal tragedy that seemed straight out of an Appalachian noir. Two years later, no one knows why it happened.

The day Bobby Jo Manley pulled up to the Rhoden family property in April 2016, she saw two pitbulls. One of them was plopped down in a recliner. There was something funny about that. The dogs didn’t usually stay outside.

Inside the three mobile homes on the property, seven Rhoden family members were dead, except for the three babies. Shots to the head, mostly, executed some time between midnight and sunup in their respective homes. The property is a couple miles down Union Hill Road right off SR 32 — the James A. Rhodes Appalachian Highway— just past the small, green sign that reads, “Entering Pike County.”

A very well-written example of long-form journalism. Even though there’s really no new developments in the case aside from Internet rumors, it’s still an interesting read on an unsolved crime.

If I had a McDonald’s franchise, I’d give each employee permission to refuse service to anyone who is rude to them, or who has been racist in public, anywhere, until corporate comes to get me.

As it was, when I had employees in the bike shop, I always had their backs, and they always had mine. I had one guy who turned in a buddy for shoplifting before I knew it happened. One would-be customer had a fit about being asked for a drivers license to hold while she test rode a bike, but the employee (different guy) was following store policy. I was perfectly OK with her not coming in for 15 years after that. Her loss.

A little OT rant. I haven’t investigated the details of the GPDR so I wont comment on it in general. However, requiring notification of cookies is fucking annoying. By using the internet I consent to the use of cookies, if I want to block them there are ways I can do that on my end. Instead now I have to click allow on every damn website(multiple times from different machines, tablets and phones).

It’s just stupid.

I agree, and that’s why I tried to make the cookie notice at LGF as unobtrusive as possible. The GDPR is a pile of unnecessary bureaucratic bullshit and it’s not going to make anyone more secure or more private. But some of the penalties for non-compliance are absurdly harsh, so unfortunately I have to deal with it even though it really, really sucks.

I guess I’m in a minority in thinking that the restaurant refusing service to Huckabee-Sanders is not a good thing. I loved it when other patrons drove Nielson and Miller to leave the restaurants, but I’m really not a fan of denying service for political affiliations.

For instance, I live in a super red area—if I have Democratic bumper stickers on my car (I don’t, for fear of keying, etc.) should a restaurant be allowed to refuse to serve me? I think there are better ways to get the message across that the people in his administration are terrible people, who should be scorned.

YMMV

Honestly, yes they can. And you can drag them through the mud if they do.

When the right decides that Nazi is no longer a good way to go through life, then we can discuss returning back to civil norms. But they broke this contract, and for us to play by rules that are no longer valid allows them to be treated as normal, which means they get to continue with their atrocities.

i predict this shaming behavior will not last
and (mostly just guessing) it hasnt been done a lot before
to some extent social media is making it louder and more effective certainly

people are mad. they are frustrated. lied to and made to feel (yes made to feel- gaslighting) like they are losing their grip on reality. no one makes any attempt to hear their voices. they are demeaned and dismissed as irrelevant (ie democrats).

at this moment in time, this a powerful way to make it clear there are a lot of unhappy people who totally disagree with what this admin is doing.

We are in some very unique political times. I think people are so frustrated and feel cheated out of control of the situation they look for ways to get their word in.

It is going to be a long hot summer. People are real testy and Trump’s act is wearing on everyone.

You’re probably right, but no one is thinking clearly, and a lot of the filters have been removed from ordinary behavior.

Keep this article handy to respond to right wing propaganda:

“…while the current administration has tried to tie Central American migrants to MS-13, government data reveals that gang members crossing irregularly are the rare exceptions. Since the Trump administration took office, the Border Patrol has detected fewer gang members crossing irregularly than during the Obama administration. In FY2017, these detections amounted to 0.075 percent of the total number of migrants (228 MS-13 members out of 303,916 total migrants). When combined with MS-13’s rival, the Barrio 18 gang, the number rises only slightly to 0.095 percent. This is far from the “infestation” of violent gang members described by the president.

The current crisis hasn’t been caused by a sudden influx of migration, either. The peak in apprehensions of irregular migrants actually took place some 17 years ago, in FY2000.”lawfareblog.com

Thanks, all, for your responses about the restaurant thing. I need to give it all some more “deep thought.” I am definitely a zero tolerance for assholes type, and I pointedly avoid patronizing retailers/restaurants owned by creepy Republicans, both chains and locals.

I’m not overly bothered by what the restaurant did, and if Sarah Sanders was humiliated and embarrassed, I will not lose a minute’s sleep (in fact, I’ll sleep with a smile on my face.)

I just, I guess, prefer the general public making the noise as in the cases of Nielson, Miller and when Milo got driven out of the bar in NY. But, in retrospect, anything that lets them all know what scum they are is a good thing. (If I weren’t lazy and it wasn’t so freaking hot and humid today, I’d be outside Pence’s little dog and pony show screaming my fool head off.)

Sarah, I know you don’t care even a tiny little bit about the ethics rules, but using your official account for this is a clear violation of 5 CFR 2635.702(a). It’s the same as if an ATF agent pulled out his badge when a restaurant tried to throw him/her out.

Depends on your form. Back and stomach, or just back? Bicycle helmets are lighter and better ventilated. Depends what the floor is made of, also. And whether it can occur on random floors without notice.
