It’s that he’s a guy who has had a goddamned litany of second chances and opportunities in life to become a better person, and who if anything, became worse. Who, given the distance of time and experience, only used his power and privilege to make life more difficult for women.

The Republican plan to have a single expert question both Kavanaugh and Ford gives them an overwhelming advantage: she can prepare consistent questions and adapt quickly to reflect responses. The Democrats will each have only 5 minutes each to ask their questions with no possibility of followup. This structure is designed to showcase the Republican argument supporting Kavanaugh and, in effect, silence the Democratic position which will be too fragmented to be effective.
Maybe we will be fortunate and Kavanaugh will be forced to withdraw before Thursday’s circus.

That sounds right to me. My problem is how he feels the need to lie about his past. His people are seriously saying the Renata alumnus was just for guys who dated or went to dances with her. I’m sorry but that’s absurd and she knows that. From what I gather Kavanaugh is what is called a functioning drunk.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.
Trump’s clown show continues with rave reviews from Trumpworld and the Fox agitprop experts, and no one else.
His claims about sovereignty and globalism went over like a lead balloon at the UN, but that wasn’t his intended audience.
It was his reactionary/regressive know nothing GOP base that laps up everything he says no matter how insane or factually wrong he is.
China benefits from Trump’s trade wars. Russia benefits from the US screwing our allies and trading partners. Russia benefits from a weaker EU and UK thanks to the Brexit bulkshit.
Kavanaugh is an awful nominee, and had Trump done a proper vetting, they would have known this was the likely outcome. Either they didn’t know and don’t care, or they knew, and don’t care. Either way, they want Kavanaugh because they like his approach to executive power and all the rest that comes with being a right wing extremist.
Everyone else, especially women, minorities, workers, and the environment, will suffer for it.

And there are still more scandals coming out - not just about Kavanaugh, but about DHS. Turns out that they did have a forcible separation policy that Trumpworld put in place, which means DHS Nielsen and John Kelly are on the hook - especially Nielsen for lying to Congress.
Not that the GOP controlled Congress will do anything about any of this. They know two things- their base wont like it, and that Trump can’t find anyone else to fill those positions. With midterms just over a month away, they are potentially screwed in so many ways, but can always fall back on knowing that a plurality of Americans don’t vote and that their vote suppression and gerrymandering efforts have paid dividends.
Even McConnell is more than willing to trade control of Congress for packing and stacking the courts with right wing extremists who will tear down the safety net and gut civil/voting rights while rolling back Roe and Griswold.
McConnell see the courts as the ultimate prize, and has gamed things to the GOP’s benefit - and the nation’s detriment.

I have been reading Robert Sapolsky’s book “Behave” and in it he addresses aspects of the Prisoners Dilemma from game theory. I know that many say it is important that we not be like the Republicans, that we must be “better than them”. But the Prisoners Dilemma illustrates that until the non-cooperating party is hammered back, they will continue to refuse to cooperate. In human behavior, this is the regrettable reality— if we ever want to return to some level of normal cooperation and compromise, when the Democrats retake power (most likely 2020), they need to show in no uncertain terms that there will always be a price to pay for a power grab. The other side will understand nothing less, and anything less will not have the necessary effect. The Republicans have shown that they care nothing for public opinion, Democrats need to have the same resolve to return our democracy to functionality. Pack the court, prosecute all Republican offenses fully, hold effective fast hearings that report the full depravity, levy taxes on the wealthy to pay down the deficit, push through Medicare for All. And when the media criticize, ignore them. When the Republicans scream tyranny, double down. I wish I did not have to advocate for this, but science informs me that this is true. We are not doing this for revenge, but for the re-establishment of a functioning democracy.

I abhor lying, but the populations seems to prefer it, so I don’t know what to do. Tell people their jobs are coming back, they are happier. Like the clown who turned down retraining because he was getting his mine job back.Tell them taxes need to be raised (like Mondale), they reject you. If a Democrat ran on the platform of Trump (tariffs, tax the rich, drain the swamp, get rid of lobbyists, Iraq War was a huge mistake, less foreign wars, cheap healthcare for everyone) those who voted for Trump wouldn’t accept it from a Democrat (remember the truism that only Nixon could go to China because of his anti-communist bona fides). I think Democrats need to lie. I choke on those words. I wholeheartedly agree to not only NOT harm innocents but to SHOWER them with good things like medical care and free education. If the Republicans can borrow a trillion dollars to give to rich fucks, Democrats can spend a trillion dollars to benefit average Americans.

I would say once in power, to reset things, there is no place for salesmanship. I don’t think you run on these things, because these are issues the populace no longer understands. Run on issues that get you elected, including lying, and then hammer the Republicans with investigations, convictions, and wholesale overturning of their policies. This sucks, but war is hell. I’m of the opinion that if they don’t want to become a state, we should offer them a severence package. We’ve screwed them over big time, but Trump and the GOP’s reaction to Maria should show everyone that being a territory isn’t helping, especially when Trump reinstates a rule that causes shipping fees to double to them.

I hear you, but as far as I know when reputable votes have been held, there’s never been a clear majority to either leave or for statehood (usually, retain current status is an option). The US would have to force the issue and that would mean having our shit enough together to pass a law in Congress forcing and arranging the vote and codifying a coherent exit strategy should the vote come down to leaving.

It’s not just that, or even rank incompetence. This administration does not care about the American people, or understand that it serves at their discretion. It’s aristocratic aloofness and disdain for the people at work here.
OTOH it may also be a result of Trump’s deliberate gutting of the civil service at the executive level. The White House is running on a skeleton crew, and one poor schmoe is probably trying to do the work of eight Obama-era staffers.

Unfortunately, actual facts being on one’s side repeatedly is not the way one gets credibility in politics these days. We see it constantly, where Republicans demonstrate bad faith and outright lying, and yet are constantly treated with a sheen of respectability and honesty time and time again. We see folks who were just proven to have lied return the next day, get quoted as if they were the most unimpeachable source ever, and any criticism from a Dem is treated as super-suspect as all fucking ever, if they’re ever used as a source to begin with.
Case in point:

I agree with Lupin that we can(and will) never return to the past. And Dangerman is correct, returning to the past shouldn’t be our goal. Despite Magats.
The past isn’t always what we think it was. Nor are we any longer the people we were then. But I do think that the past is the necessary starting point to the future. As long as we have an honest understanding of the past.
And towards the future is where we should look.
re: #84 Old Liberal
I have been reading Robert Sapolsky’s book “Behave” and in it he addresses aspects of the Prisoners Dilemma from game theory. I know that many say it is important that we not be like the Republicans, that we must be “better than them”. But the Prisoners Dilemma illustrates that until the non-cooperating party is hammered back, they will continue to refuse to cooperate. …
I haven’t read Sapolsky but have read other articles about the Prisoners Dilemma. It’s a fun game but its relationship to situations outside of the original premise are limited:
1. It’s strictly mathematical — no reward for being honest or punishment for doing harm. Just 2 actions each party can take with the identical matrix of payoffs; i.e. if A does Y and B does Z the results for A are the same as would be true for B if A did Z and B did Y
2. The payoffs are structured in such a way to encourage certain behaviors if parties engage repeatedly with each other. Different structures would lead to different results.
The whole premise is divorced from honesty, ethics, kindness, or the law. It assumes that both participants are in the same situation and respond to the same incentives. That is clearly not true in our current political world.

This is essentially the studies referenced by Sapolsky, multiple rounds, but I need to say that I am not saying Sapolsky endorses anything or even that I am representing him correctly. I do believe in fighting back, but you have to find a response that works. Occasionally, an organization sets up a competition for contestants to submit programs that play the Prisoner’s Dilemma repeatedly against other programs. Again this is a game where morality is irrelevant. For example, if a program adheres to a principle of always cooperating and never striking back, the correct process of the other program is to betray the first program every time; i.e. the game teaches that if the other side cannot fight back, it’s ok to treat them like trash.
It’s really designed for a situation of parties with equal power and identical ethics.

One thing these other allegations do is give evidence to Ford’s testimony.
The GOP Judiciary Committee thought they could hold off details and witnesses and make Ford’s case look thin.

Feinstein’s holding back until now worked perfectly. Assuming that the GOP has to fold, there is no way for Trump to select and get another judicial nominee approved before the November election. If she had launched this attack in July, there would be another judicial nominee, without any personal foibles, who would likely have sailed through.

re: #231 Dr. Matt
If Kavanaugh doesn’t withdraw his name by COB, he’s either evil, completely fucking clueless, completely fucking arrogant, or all of the above.
There’s another possible reason.
Kavanaugh has had a significant chunk of his debts written off in a very mysterious way.
He knew this stuff was likely to come out during a confirmation process.
It seems quite likely that he is only doing the nomination because he is beholden to other people for various things like paying off his debt, or possibly covering up other nefarious behaviour.
Quite simply, he might not be free to withdraw his nomination without seriously annoying whoever organised his nomination.
re: #233 calochortus
I’m still trying to figure out why a calendar that shows Kavanaugh heading off for beach weekends with friends exonerates him.
Because if he wrote down this trip, it implies he would have written down the party. Not really, but that’s what they hope to imply.

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh dismissed a new allegation of misconduct against him on Wednesday, saying: “This is ridiculous and from the Twilight Zone. I don’t know who this is and this never happened.”

And yet we still don’t have the answer to that fundamental question about his financial situation. Where’d the debt go, and how was it paid off.

Right-wing media have implied that Hrabar was let go because of a sting video by Project Veritas, a conservative outlet, but the DOJ moved not to renew her contract before the video was released.

He’s not done until he’s off the federal bench.
He clearly lacks the character and judgment to be a judge.
And that the FBI didn’t catch this in their earlier investigation isn’t particularly surprising either. Women don’t want to come forward because they’re victimized again and again by right wingers who attack these women, claim they’re liars, and cause still more harm to them.
Dr. Ford was the one who broke this out into the open. But it also takes more than one woman to come forward with credible claims because it’s still the case that women aren’t believed by law enforcement, public opinion, or politicians who think he said/she said invariably favors the guy being elevated.
Today’s front-runner in the ‘Needs a punch in the throat’ sweepstakes - Chuck Grassley.
GRASSLEY tells me re: Avenatti: “Seems to me he wants to protect people involved in pornography and he’s running for president. I don’t know what his motivations are. … but really what’s important here isn’t the lawyer … [it’s] the woman who says she’s been harmed.”
— Andrew Desiderio (@desiderioDC) September 26, 2018
Seems pretty telling that Grassley thinks “people involved in pornography” are not worth protecting, while stating no objection whatsoever to the President’s extramarital affair with the exact same person. https://t.co/oYYcxp4wpj

Gee—David French’s wife, Nancy, his co-author (and Palin ghost-writer extraordinaire) had a bit of a different take back in the Roy Moore days on 2017:
The evil of sexual predators is that they attack the weak, make them weaker, then discredit them because of their weakness. These arrogant monsters go on to bigger and better things, leaving a collection of wounded people in their wake. But these victims, one by one, are coming forward anyway — well aware that they’ll be mocked and disbelieved, well aware that some will scrutinize their lives more harshly than their predators’.
And let us remember that…
In Home and Away, a book written by David and Nancy French, the couple talks about their experience staying together while David was deployed in Iraq. They revealed that they set up rules for what Nancy was not allowed to do while David was gone.
These rules included the fact that Nancy was not allowed to drink, she could not use Facebook, and she could not “have phone conversations with men, or meaningful e-mail exchanges about politics or any other subject.” At one point, Nancy began an email exchange with a man to talk about faith, but David insisted she end the conversation.

Last one out, turn out the lights. He’s done, no matter what his blustering backers have to say today.
I wish I could be so sure: the Judiciary Committee is still committed to having Christine Ford testify tomorrow (and Kavanaugh) - unless BK bails today, that’s still going to be on. Also, I’m not sure the Senate Republicans aren’t just going to say “fuck it”, and try to ram the nomination through by any means necessary. They have GOT to all be thoroughly steamed over this whole mess: they’ve been seriously played by Feinstein and the other Democrats, and they have been backed into a corner where (outside of K withdrawing) there is no positive outcome for them.
But then, this is Mitch McConnell’s Senate bloc: no one should put any tactic past him to get what he (or his paymasters) want.
And in all these denials never once does Kavanaugh ask for the FBI to investigate and clear him. Why would anyone let alone a judge not do that?

The Catholic Church routinely covered up sex abuse and sex crimes by its staffers across decades. Decades.
How did the FBI not uncover that? Oh wait - they weren’t looking and no one was willing to open up about the abuse, but once one person came forward to law enforcement, the others started to find their voice.

Why didn’t they speak up.
1,000+ victims of sex abuse uncovered in PA Grand Jury report spanning abuse by Catholic priests over 7+ decades. Those in position of power routinely abuse their position to stay in power. They carried out abuse, and made those abused feel like they deserved it.
The abusers avoided scrutiny and those who were abused didn’t want to come forward for fear for themselves and their already fragile mental health. But once one person finds their voice, others come forward.
Turns out that where there’s smoke, there’s a goddamned wildfire.
Kavanaugh’s abuse is little different. Men think they can abuse and get away with it, and their victims bear the burdens until one comes forward with the strength and voice to say no. This ends here.

I wonder if they’re worried about a Bork situation. Bork would have definitely voted to overturn Roe… hell, he’d have voted to overturn Griswold and its progeny regarding the right to privacy.
When Bork was defeated, we got Kennedy, and their chances of imposing their puritan world view was crushed for three decades.
Maybe they’re worried that any Kavanaugh replacement would be less likely to side with the Christian taliban.

There’s so much more going on with this nomination than meets the eye.
I think any nominee from the Federalist Society will be down with killing Roe. I think t’s got more to do with Russia, and Kavanaugh’s belief that the president is above all laws.
If what we speculate about every day around here is true - that a majority of the GOP is complicit with Putin - then this one nominee would be the key to letting all of them get away with their collusion.

Bork is a pivotal part of the right wing’s mythos of victimization, and exactly as true as their fables of Reagan and Buckley. He was full of shit and hopped on any legal theory that justified his reactionary instincts.
When they invoke Bork as a victim, it’s to reaffirm that what is right is only defined by what is expedient to their needs.
How they’re treating Kavanaugh…who’s a hack jurist who’s literally been groomed by an organization to fulfill their agenda…is a continuation of the Vaseline-on-the-lens picture of Bork, “principled originalist.”

Again, it’s been a while since I’ve run in Federalist Society circles, but I’d guess there’s probably more than a few that come from the libertarian side of the group.

Right but he’s really losing it. Like big time.
Hasn’t been a good week even by this administration’s standards and that is saying something.
Being a laughingstock at the UN and lectured by “shithole countries” may have sent him over the edge
re: #496 The Ghost of a Flea
Bork is a pivotal part of the right wing’s mythos of victimization, and exactly as true as their mythic versions of Reagan and Buckley. He was full of shit and hopped on any legal theory that justified his reactionary instincts.
When they invoke Bork, it’s to reaffirm that what is right is only defined by what is expedient to their needs.
How they’re treating Kavanaugh…who’s a hack jurist who’s literally been groomed by an organization to fulfill their agenda…is a continuation of the Vaseline-on-the-lens picture of Bork, “principled originalist.”
Bork’s “inkblot on the constitution” line about the 9th Amendment should have been his downfall among originalists. You can’t claim to be some high-minded constitutional scholar and then say “I have no fucking clue what that means.”
Hell, his role in the Saturday Night Massacre should have been enough to prevent his nomination, but that’s the way this shit goes.

Exactly
“Trump signaled today that he would blame China if the Republicans do poorly in November’s midterm elections.”

Gas prices are still too high. We really need to pressure OPEC to lower the price of oil.

You know what would help gas prices: CAFE standards.
(Yes, I know all the details.)

Well, then maybe not do shit like roll back fuel efficiency requirements, eh? Or maybe encourage mass transit infrastructure projects?
Christ, does he know anything other than how to approach sexual assault allegations?
re: #502 Single-handed sailor
This reminds me of the old bit that if Trump would have simply had Warren Buffett handle his investments his net worth would be at least double its current amount. (Forget where I read that, many many years ago).
All Trump had to do was nothing. Just don’t fuck shit up, instead he’s going to…
I have a difficult time believing any person would continue to go to – according to the affidavit – ten parties over a two-year period where women were routinely gang raped and not report it.

These idiots have no idea the the sheer volume of rage women are finally expressing, and how much this feeds that rage. Powderkeg. https://t.co/HHsubXZ63l

It’s simple. They have discounted women for generations & think they can still get away with it today. That’ why they are working to overturn Roe, that’s why they are going to let the VAWA expire. Come the midterms, we will hopefully show them it’s dangerous to ignore/discount us https://t.co/14kWHF9cJZ

A drop in the price of oil (and thus gasoline) would be bad for American oil companies. It’s only the fact that oil prices are so high right now that makes it profitable for American businesses to drill.
He’s actively trying to hurt the US economy on a daily basis - whether it’s this, or tariffs, or tearing up free trade deals, or shitty tax laws that allow publicly traded companies to do stock buy backs…

Fucking this x a Million.
In her first statement on the Senate floor, Republican Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith says sexual assault must never be taken lightly — which is why “unproven accusations,” like these ones against Kavanaugh, “are so very unjust.”

Thing is, these people invoke texts to conjure with them…whether it’s the Bible or the “originalist” Constitution…not to discuss the contents.
They’re not appointing someone to make rulings in accordance with a consistent, systematic theory of jurisprudence, they’re appointing someone who will do as instructed and retroactively attribute their votes to some kind of ethos.

Man, are you going to be disappointed when you hear about Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, Donald Trump, Kevin Spacey, Larry Nassar, Matt Lauer, Charlie Rose, Roger Ailes, Bill O’Reilly, Dennis Hastert, and a serious chunk of the Catholic Church priesthood.

Your not allowed to talk about it until you’ve talked about it and have had it proven. Yep, that will hurt.
Sorry to dump that 8chan garbage on y’all yesterday and then run, but I’m having to really really monitor the amount of time I spent connected because otherwise I’m just in such a dark place.
I get that the GOP is probably going to pay a price this November for their epic shitshow these past two years. Thing is, the stat that just jumped out at me: we are from next year until the dollar collapses as a currency, going to be paying more in interest in Republican debt than we do on the US Military.
During the boom years, we are supposed to pay down debt. Instead, we’re doubling down on it (literally). I’ve lived through currency meltdowns early in my career, and my friends are going thru collapses right now in Venezuela & Argentina.
Seriously thinking about selling everything and moving the fuck out of America right now, because if that happens here in the U.S., that kind of collapse will crater all of society, and all the shit that the Doomsday Preppers yammer about will pretty much be baseline existence.
Erick is a garbage-person who wants to enslave our women to a theocratic state. Things look upside-down to people like that.

All roads lead to Moscow, amirite?
Now I’ve got a pretty good idea where the money came from to get Kavanaugh flush…
That is just MONSTROUSLY huge. Yanukovich hired Manafort, which got Manafort and his #2 convicted.
