I mean, really, why isn’t a 70% tax on families making over $10 million a year reasonable? We have a graduated tax structure where all income below $10 million is taxed at a lower level.
It’s not like if you make $10,000,001 a year the government is going to reduce your income to $3 million dollars, and if you make $9,999,999, your income would be $6.3 million.
Sadly, the vast majority of Americans have no idea what graduated tax is and how it works.
If we dropped a 70% tax on all income over $10 million/year we would be in much better shape.
If we reinstituted the “Death Tax” on family wealth (with reasonable exceptions) we would be in much better shape.
Oh, and if we removed the Social Security Tax cap and required the that tax be applied to *all* income, SS would be much closer to out of the hole tomorrow.
And if we indexed Capital Gains and treated it as income, we would be much closer to being out of the Medicare/Medicaid hole tomorrow.
It won’t happen, of course, but it would go a long way to attack the deficit.

Unearned income (“Capital Gains”) needs to be taxed at twice the rate of earned income, not half or less (much less now).

The unnamed girl was eventually reunited with her father, Hasan Ali.

Mark Taylor: Democrats Winning the House was a ‘Sting Operation’ to Expose Voter Fraud (Goes to Right Wing Watch, with video)
Mark Taylor, the so-called Firefighter Prophet, has gone Q-nut.
Prior to the 2018 midterm elections, so-called “firefighter prophet” Mark Taylor repeatedly insisted that America would witness a “red tsunami” in which overwhelming support for President Trump would sweep Republicans into office all over the nation.
When that didn’t happen, Taylor nevertheless insisted that his prophecy had been accurate, claiming that the “red tsunami” he had prophesied would now come in the form of mass arrests.
Despite the fact that that also has not happened, Taylor continues to maintain that the election “was a huge red tsunami” and that it only appears as if Democrats won control of the House of Representatives—because the election was really a massive “sting operation” designed to expose Democratic voter fraud, as he explained during his recent appearance on “The MC Files” program.
“I know for a fact that they stole the House,” Taylor declared. “They did not win the House. They did not win a lot of these elections across the country. It was a huge red tsunami—I’ve been attacked for saying it was a red tsunami—and people don’t understand, again, it’s in God’s timing. There are certain things that will be revealed and exposed and people will understand what’s going on.”
“This was a huge sting operation across the nation with the election to see where the voter fraud was,” he added. “Now they’re going to use this for voter I.D. When we get voter I.D., forget it, the Democrats are done. This is the implosion of the Democratic Party. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I don’t think you will see a Democrat in the White House again for a long time, if ever again, because people have had it, they are fed up with this mess.”
You go with that, Mark. The only openly fraudulent election I’m aware of was NC-9, where a Protestant Republican pastor hired someone to steal ballots in both the GOP primary and the general election. He’s not being seated by the House. That’s your party Mark.

E.W. Jackson: Ilhan Omar ‘Wasn’t Really Elected by Americans’ (Right Wing Watch, with Soundcloud audio)
Right-wing Christian radio host says Rep. Ilhan Omar wasn’t elected by “real Americans.”
He’s also upset at the language used by Rep. Rashida Tlaib, in reference to her child, saying she should be investigated (though he doesn’t say for what).
Jackson doesn’t believe anyone who is not a Christian should be in any level of governance. He also believes LGBT and atheists should be put outside society.
On Rep. Omar:
“Folks, as I looked into her background, I’ll tell you, I’m just disgusted by the fact that she got elected to Congress,” Jackson declared. “It does not portend well for our country. First of all, she wasn’t really elected by Americans. She was elected by a Somali community that maintains its sense of difference and distinction and, to use her words, ‘otherness.’ That’s who elected her. That’s why she’s in Congress. She didn’t go out and compete in the marketplace of ideas and talk to all Americans about everything. She didn’t go out and talk to Americans of all kinds of backgrounds, descents, economic status; no, she basically has been raised in the cocoon of a Somali community that set itself up in the Minneapolis area and that is the basis and the source of her power.”
Omar’s election, Jackson said, “points out something else, folks, that you need to understand: Islam doesn’t assimilate, Islam infiltrates.”
Fortunately, Virginia voters turned him away from office in 2013.

Interesting … my wife was watching a video on pseudoscience, specifically homeopathy.
Last year there was a company that made baby teething tablets which were allegedly homeopathic. They were discovered to contain deadly nightshade (the source of barbital-based medications and what makes the plant so wildly poisonous).
The FDA demanded the tablets be removed from the market.
Out of curiosity I went looking up the statement from the FDA and the statement from the company.
The FDA was quite clear that deadly nightshade in the tablets was the reason for the mandatory ban, the company which sold them up until last year put up an FAQ for customers basically complaining of excessive government overreach by the FDA and a war on homeopathic teething tablets.
Free market baby.

Explain, other than I listed one of the states where you live.
other shithole and flyover states where there is vast land and nobody wants to live and build cities and all that goes with it to care for all these people.
All of our cities (yes, we have them) have Democratic majority governments (although Omaha has a Republican mayor after Daily Kos torpedoed the Democratic candidate for not being pure enough, which caused depressed turnout in an election which he was thought to win).
Nebraska per capita has the most refugees. Of the top ten states ranked by Pew Research, three are so-called blue states (Vermont, Washington, and Minnesota). The rest are those flyover states you mentioned, plus Kentucky.
California, New York, and Texas took in the most in absolute numbers but do not come close to the top ten per capita.
I don’t know what state you live in. All states are a mixture of liberals and conservatives, and a majority of people who don’t participate in the election process.
Those vast states are also where the country grows its food.

In Federal money (tax out versus federal funds in), Nebraska is a donor state. (We pay more than we get back).
Coming up in the legislature is a new bill to repeal the death penalty referendum passed in 2014, which is expected to pass and be signed into law.
Maryjane will be on the ballot for the next election. Expect that to bring out a bunch of voters.
The last election had more Democrats run at all levels of government than history, and about 2-1 women to men candidates. Despite the national party ignoring this state for decades, the NDP managed to build up an impressive candidate pool for the election. Although I lost my seat on my village board, Democrats were elected to the county commission and the other two cities. Most notably, in a write-in campaign (because the candidate filed too late), the Democratic candidate for mayor in Bayard defeated the Republican incumbent 80-20%. That was a rout.

re: #82 Unshaken Defiance
Then you’ve got people trying to make excuses for Trump dissembling and saying that he didn’t mean it about the full wall, and that a smaller wall is acceptable.
Will 150 miles of new structure, where no barrier exists today, be considered a win for the wall? There are already 654 miles of existing barrier. He’s not even planning to build half of what his predecessors built before him.
— Sam Hopkins (@OhMrCharlie) January 11, 2019
That is plan for this/next year. Trump has often said he thought about 1000 miles of barrier needed. Congress has in past voted for about 700. In any event, not talking entire 1954-mile border.
https://t.co/ZDHllmuk2l— Byron York (@ByronYork) January 11, 2019
Trump repeatedly called for the entire border to have a wall. He said Mexico pays for it.
These are the core planks to his entire immigration strategy that furthers white nationalist agenda.
Stop trying to dissemble and claim he’s wanting something different. https://t.co/QDiiO6j9en— lawhawk (@lawhawk) January 11, 2019
Umm… no. Trump has lied about every aspect of the wall and immigration policy because it’s a dog whistle and white nationalist value signaling to his base that this is what they want and he’s fighting for it.
Trump repeatedly lies about the economics of the wall, from the cost to how much it’ll add to the economy (it wont).
Know what will grow the economy more? Improving and expanding immigration so that more people can come here legally. Why? Because those people consume goods and buy stuff and sell stuff and add value to the economy. They also create value and we would benefit from spending more on clearing the backlog of visa overstays (which is how and why most are here illegally now). Undocumented persons commit crimes at a far lower rate than native born Americans by a wide margin.
But the people who think that the dark skinned folks are coming to murder them in their sleep in their cabins in Montana are the ones who are furthest from the border.
Oh, and Trump self-pwned yesterday when DHS showed him stuff from a tunnel discovered under one of the wall segments we do have.
People can: go over, under, and through the border wall. Without constant cost of patrolling the border, it’s a meaningless blight on the landscape. There is no crisis but for the one Trump manufactured.
And Trump the great negotiator has no way out. He doesn’t have an exit plan and doesn’t know what he can do to end the shutdown without caving to Democrats.
That’s why he’s pushing the national emergency angle. He thinks he can use that to extort what he wants from Democrats. Except on that he undercuts himself when he claims Mexico is paying for the wall via the new deal. If Mexico’s paying, why shut down government, and then ask for ratification of his NAFTA 2.0 (USMCA) and appropriate the funds from the revenue? The reason is he doesn’t know what is in the deal, that’s not how it works, and he’s just baffling with BS some more. But someone has to keep calling him out for this and Democrats need to craft something that will pass both House and Senate and get enough votes to veto override anything Trump throws their way.
The longer this goes, the more pressure is on the GOP, which continues to enable this corrupt admin. He looks weaker by the day, precisely because he’s trying to claim an emergency and crisis when crossings are at multidecade lows and have been trending down for years.
re: #77 HappyWarrior
I’m listening people who actually live near the border rather than Trump. A man who by his own admission doesn’t read so why should I take wall proponents seriously when their ringleader doesn’t know squat about the border.

1. The midterms showed King could be defeated.
2. King now faces a credible primary challenger, which he has not in the past.
3. Forcefully condemning King now could dissuade him from seeking a 10th term.
4. Iowa will be a battleground again in 2020 for president, Senate and House — and King could be a drag on the rest of the GOP ticket.
5. Republican presidential aspirants have been reluctant to cross King in the past because he commands a loyal following among the devoted grass-roots activists who attend low-turnout caucuses in outsize numbers, but there’s no nominating fight to worry about in 2020.
6. Because they now control the majority, House Democrats can force Republicans to take a position on King.

Senate Democrats are refusing to vote on other legislation until the shutdown has ended, so Republicans are trying to set up a “Why won’t Democrats not get paid like we don’t want to” scenario. And then if Democrats do vote on it, then Republicans will argue why can’t they vote for other stuff.

Neither side (or the WH) wants to prevent potential shutdowns in the future because a shutdown threat is leverage one side or the other has to try and extract concessions. Same with the debt ceiling.
We’ve seen the WH or Congress use a shutdown threat to try and force concessions and issues to get resolved. They shouldn’t be using a costly shutdown to achieve those goals, but it’s what they do. Usually the threat of a shutdown is enough to get sides talking, but Trump isn’t talking or negotiating in good faith. He’s a saboteur who doesn’t care about negotiating or compromise. He wants what he wants, and when he doesn’t get what he wants, he stomps off and thinks that he can declare a national emergency because he didn’t get his way.

With Trump? I really am not anymore. I think he’s one of the most unintelligent people i’ve ever seen in public life and he’s surrounded by people who are either equally unintelligent or afraid to call out his bullshit. I think he really thought he would just bully the Mexican government into paying for a wall and that would be that. He had no plan at all.
When Sam Nunberg is a top political adviser on something like Mexico paying for a wall, you have problems.
Here is Nunberg’s career from Wiki. It’s nuts. Snakes all the way down. He and Trump have been in and out with each other for years. Suits abound.
While working as a volunteer for the Mitt Romney 2008 presidential campaign, Nunberg met and was hired by attorney Jay Sekulow to work at the American Center for Law & Justice in an attempt to stop the construction of the Park51 mosque.[6] While working there he met political operative Roger Stone, whom he has described as his mentor and “surrogate father”.[7][8][9]
Nunberg began working for Trump, as a consultant, in 2011,[10], after Trump decided not to run for president in 2012.[1] Nunberg assisted in the writing of Trump’s 2011 speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference.[11] His other work during the period included being the director of the Middle East Forum’s Legal Project from January 2012 to November 2014.[4][12]
After being hired by Trump, Nunberg told friends that the more that Trump considered a presidential run, the more consulting work for Stone and him.[10] In February 2014 Nunberg was fired by Trump after he arranged a BuzzFeed interview that ended up being highly critical of Trump; the headline was “36 Hours on The Fake Campaign Trail with Donald Trump.”[4][13] In February 2015 he was rehired by Trump, as a communications adviser for the Trump campaign,[14] but was let go, shortly thereafter, by then-campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.[1]
Nunberg was rehired by the campaign in April 2015[1]; between then and the beginning of July he was paid $15,139 by the campaign.[15] Nunberg, along with Stone, helped prepare Trump for the first Republican debate, on August 6, 2015.[16] Nunberg was fired at the end of July[13] after old Facebook posts which contained racist comments were published.[15] In March 2016 Nunberg endorsed Senator Ted Cruz for president, saying that Trump “does not have a coherent political ideology.”[4]
In July 2016 Trump sued Nunberg for $10 million, accusing Nunberg of violating a confidentiality agreement by leaking information to the New York Post.[17] In a legal response, Nunberg said that Trump might have illegally funneled corporate money into the campaign.[18] Trump and Nunberg settled their legal dispute in August 2016.[18][19]

Good morning, all.
I flew back from Miami yesterday after another short trip (might as well spend the money while it still has some value). I haven’t been in MIA often enough to know whether the crowds were unusual (plus I’m normally precleared — even if you’re on the list, they randomly send you through the regular lines about one time in four, always at the worst possible time), but it didn’t seem particularly bad to me.
We were all checked through (including the guy whose luggage went through four times — “Oh, that’s ALSO electronics? Just like the ones you took out of my luggage for separate screening on the first, second and third runs?”) by polite and friendly TSA people WHO WILL NOT BE PAID TODAY. Meanwhile, it is the fucking job of Congress and the President to keep the government running, and they’re not doing it… but they’ll get their pay on schedule. Grrr.
(Yes, Mitch McConnell is primarily to blame, but the Repugs in the Senate who are not now working on removing him as Senate Majority Leader and reopening the government are as responsible as he is.)

I don’t think that bill goes anywhere since the threat of shutdowns is often used to extract concessions in the past. As much as it is a good government idea - to keep govt running using CRs that don’t interrupt functioning govt, the GOP and Trump aren’t going to sign that bill when sabotage is their current MO.
They’ve done the same thing around the debt ceiling too. Things that should be automatic turn into shutdown threats that hold the economy and therefore the public hostage to threats of economic harm (and we’re already seeing the harms to millions).

‘Brought to Jesus’: the evangelical grip on the Trump administration
In setting out the Trump administration’s Middle East policy, one of the first things Mike Pompeo made clear to his audience in Cairo is that he had come to the region as “as an evangelical Christian”.
In his speech at the American University, Pompeo said that in his state department office: “I keep a Bible open on my desk to remind me of God and his word, and the truth.”
Among other things, Pompeo believes in the Rapture. Like the boiling frog, we here in the States have been exposed to this gradually, and perhaps no longer realize just how strange and dangerous it is to inject this superstition into real world policy.

It’s hilarious seeing a Freedumb Caucus crybaby accuse anyone of overpoliticizing or acting in bad faith.
About the Trump/Trackdown episode from 1958.
I wonder if this is really as great a coincidence as it appears to be. Individual One’s father, Fred Trump, was already a notorious New York landlord at the time, so much so that he, and his discriminatory policies, were the subject of a Woody Guthrie protest song, Old Man Trump, written in 1954.
Trackdown writer John Robinson was a life-long Californian, but like most writers of the time, he would have been familiar with affairs in New York, and probably with Woody Guthrie. Trackdown’s Trump and the wall of 1958 could have been an oblique reference.
The U.S. House has passed a spending bill to reopen the Interior Department and EPA.
The vote was 240-179, with 10 Republicans siding with Democrats, per @KilloughCNN.

McConnell is getting a huge pass from reporters for refusing to bring these votes to the floor. If they pass & Trump vetoes, there is a process, right there in the Constitution (Art. I, Sec. 7, Cl. 2) for overriding a presidential veto. Why are we pretending that’s not an option? https://t.co/YNAy3dC89Y

Yes — this is dangerous, but the current disasters in the Middle East were not prompted by this religious fanaticism. Nor was Obama with some of his ill-advised ventures — nor is Trump, who probably never heard of the Rapture. The mess in Iran is due to 1950’s actions that were realpolitik at its “finest”.

There was a diary at DK about it that evening, with the same title everyone used for Pelosi and Schumer, and AOC about ripping Trump and the GOP. I didn’t read it.

“White privilege” is a rancid conspiracy theory designed to cover up the reality of ethnic IQ differences.
If whites are so privileged, why are whites becoming minorities in their own countries?
It is a hateful racist lie.

relative score on written IQ test does not necessarily relate to directly proportional measure of relative intelligence
“their own countries”, US is a country taken over by whites which was always populated by people of various non-white races
“white privilege” has been used inappropriately at times but it is still a concise term to explain the way in which police and public authorities deal with members of minority groups

A man who was a total dick to our last Democratic president and has done nothing to help Democrats and in fact gives Republican talking points. There was a time where Lieberman was worthy of respect but he hasn’t earned any since he screwed us over on the public option and hasn’t supported a Democratic nominee since John Kerry when AOC was just fifteen years old. He also stopped calling himself a Democrat. Trust me, you’re barking up the wrong tree here.

And Liberman most certainly did say something stupid.

Lieberman couldn’t even bother to support Clinton against Trump. That’s how bad he is. It was bad enough that he fucked Obama on the public option after Obama hadn’t let the Senate Dems punish him for supporting McCain over him but doing that was pretty telling of Joe’s character and how little he cares for the Democratic Party because he can’t accept that he was legitimately primaried by the Democratic voters of Connecticut.

What is the measure for ‘border security’? Do we know when it has been achieved? Does it involve more or fewer people being detained/deported? Does it differentiate between “illegals” who are here because of lapsed visas and those who we know entered across the border illegally?

So which is it? Is she a freshman who doesn’t know anything yet or a leader of (wo)men? Like Bernie and Donald, she ducks behind whichever label is convenient to avoid responsibility for her statements.
Oh, and she’s not popular. YouGov shows her approval rating at +1 (-2 among registered voters).
She has been in office for what a week?
And you are dragging out popularity poles compiled from a few days.
That polling is probably driven more by guys like you and all the clamor in the press than on anything to do with her actual politics.
(I just realized it is ridiculous to even comment on this crap)
TBH I wonder what the “proper thing” to say would have been. AOC hasn’t met Lieberman ever nor do I think she has ever singled him out by name not that he wouldn’t deserve it given the public option stuff but here he’s shaming a freshman Congresswoman who he knows nothing or little about outside what his bubble has told him. I would TBH feel this criticism might have some more validity if it were made by someone who has actually tried to help Dems win lately though I didn’t like Claire McCaskill who never missed an opportunity to distance herself from Obama deriding her as a shiny object. I think capitalism is strongest when it’s challenged and has to deal with the fact that it’s not as great as its proponents insist it is. Am I capitalist more than socialist? Yeah I am but I don’t worship capitalism nor any economic system. I’m glad AOC challenges our economic status quo because it needs to be challenged. The American people deserve to be told that it’s absurd that we can spend the way we do on the military but not on our population’ s welfare.

He lost his primary and ran as an independent.

Seriously, go the fuck away. You’re boring tripe is boring.
He also suggested he’d approve of lowering the Medicare buy-in age to 55… until Anthony Weiner said “yes, thank you, awesome, let’s” — then Joe decided it wasn’t a good idea after all.

Lieberman hasn’t been a Democrat since 2006. That’s going on 13 years now. He doesn’t have his finger on the pulse of the Democrats. He’s into himself and furthering his own brand, which isn’t what Democrats are buying these days.
LIEberman has his middle finger on the pulse of Democrats ever since he stabbed us in the back.

I really don’t like that particular phrase given its history and Lieberman’s religious and ethnic background. I know you didn’t intend it like that at all Joe being Jewish yourself. But yeah he’s really been a total dick to the Dems for years now. As I said, he last supported a Democratic presidential candidate in 2004 and I recall his support of Kerry being pretty lukewarm.

ps - i havent been watching the news these last few days
a quick observation as i logged in and glanced at the ‘headlines’
dont let em link the shutdown with the wall
calling it the shutdown over the wall or whatever
it’s not
there are scads of ways to reopen all or most of the gov’t that have nothing to do with the wall. lots of people have offered lots of proposals
linking them is hostage taking cause the pres has no other card to play (short of national emergency nonsense)
if the d’s use the framing, then it will become the wall shutdown and those ‘scads of ways’ will go bye bye
dont let em do it!
the wall is the wall (i dont accept that as legitimate either but…another time)
the shutdown is manufactured. nothing is holding up reopening the govt
keep the faith. im out
