Well, I’m managing to do it without weed, but given it’s legal in CA now, I have been asking whether company policy still forbids using it during off hours (had to pee in a cup for the job).

Same here, but since weed is illegal here, booze.

If the company is in any way associated with the federal government, it is still illegal.
I’ve been smoking some shake and keef of this stuff called Grapefruit tonight, I got a bunch of it (like, almost a half ounce) for free last month. I know a couple of growers. I’m a skier in Colorado, I mean, after all, d’fuck. Anyhoo, what were we talking about?

Colorado’s legal cannabis law has a NIMBY clause written into it, where municipalities can decide if they want weed stores or not. The town I live in has no weed stores because the town’s government has rejected weed stores. The nearest weed store is the next town over, about eight miles.
My favorite is the Aspen versus Vail thing where Aspen clearly wins. Aspen has weed stores, Vail does not.
re: #13 The Vicious Babushka
Somehow that doesn’t surprise me. Traveled through Mich. a time or three when I was a kid. Every town had different liquor laws. Shut down for any booze in one town, just traveled 10 minutes to the next and you could drink in the bar and get package too.

When I was a kid in Abilene, TX, the city was dry. The road I lived on led to a small town, Impact, completely inside the city. There was a liquor store there, that everyone went to. It made it hard to play in the street.
Outside of Rockwall, there’s a little town called Mobile City, that consists of a liquor store and a trailer park. It exists because, up until about 10 or so years ago, Rockwall was dry. It’s still the only place in the area you can buy hard liquor.

Not terribly interested in weed. Don’t care if other people partake, though. And as I get older, there’s always the possibility of medical use, so there’s that.
My preferred mind-altering drug is a glass of wine. Or a mixed drink once in a while.

re: #29 teleskiguy
Not only dry counties but dry municipalities as well. Back in Pennsylvania there are a chunk of counties that are dry but lots of boroughs/villages/townships that are dry.
When I moved to California and lived at my Grandmothers home in South Gate, the city did not allow taverns to sell wine or hard liquor. They could only serve beer.

I haven’t smoked weed since 1985 — scratch that, I had some while visiting my son in Denver a couple of years ago. When I was younger, I didn’t give much thought about the effects of smoking on my lungs. Now, almost 35 years later, I take it into consideration. I haven’t tried edibles in ages.

My city (Mesa) won’t allow any dispensaries in the city. However, there are a number of county islands in the city, originally set up so the retirement communities wouldn’t have to pay city or school taxes. It turns out some of these county islands have developed corners with tiny shopping centers and office complexes. I still remember my surprise when the first dispensary went in, I couldn’t figure out how it was done until I whipped out a map and figured out it was a corner in a county island.

In Washington, “tavern” is a technical term—they can only sell beer or wine. Only a “cocktail lounge” can serve hard liquor.

If we want to get serious about selling alcohol then we need to simplify the language in the laws. We’ve already done it in real life. It’s called the *bar*. A place where you can buy alcoholic beverages.

My stepson and his wife live in a wet city in a dry county in KY. I didn’t realize it until I saw the wet-dry map I just posted.
In China, there are no apparent restrictions on what liquor you can buy where. Age restrictions are loosely enforced, so it’s no big deal for 15-year-olds to buy and drink beer (it’s pretty weak here, anyway) but unlike American teens, they don’t feel compelled to party and get trashed on the weekends — even if they could. There is also a sharp delineation by gender here. More men typically drink beer and hard liquor (baijiu, for the most part) than women do. Wine is becoming more fashionable, OTOH, so it’s common to see both men and women partake at dinner parties. Bars, in the American sense, used to be uncommon, but since I’ve been here have become more prevalent.
re: #63 wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam
The biggest problem here with teens and alcohol is most of America still requires a car to get around. Even my modest sized 40K suburb requires a car to just go to the store.

That and the need to binge and get drunk rather than just enjoying a drink. Binge drinking on the weekends is apparently a much more common thing than when I was young, back in the Dark Ages.

It seems to been elevated to a kind of sport — who can get trashed the quickest. Alcohol poisoning cases are much more of a problem now than when I was in college, when the drinking age was still 18.

I blame that on us turning alcohol into something special, something all-powerful, and something we must restrict. At that point, we’ve made it into something some people must have as a rite of passage, rather than something parents should teach their kids about.

Two accretion discs with a combined spin center? They could have slowly orbited each other until they finally connected and fused (or at least formed a gravitic bond).
Not so hard to imagine, although two bodies matching speed and orbits is freakishly unlikely.
And yet, in the fullness of time, it has to be the only reasonable explanation.

Reminds of a few years ago when we visited neighbors for a dinner with strong White Sangria. My wife loved the fruit, that had been soaked in some alcohol, so they gave her a bag of leftover fruit.
The next morning, I was running a disc golf tournament at my home. At about 8:30 am she came out told me she was tipsy because the fruit still had alcohol in it and she had eaten it for breakfast.
I told her to go inside and eat some food. She did. She ate the fried eggs I had not finished that morning, made with strong cannabutter.
She was tipsy and high before10 am without intending any of it.

Speaking of tipsy, I’m giving this Chinese whisky a try. I saw it in the supermarket today next to Ballantine’s. Ballantine’s was priced at 298 yuan for 500 ml ($44) while this one retails for almost a tenth of that. Surprisingly, it is actually not bad. 40% alcohol by volume, and it is bottled in Qingdao, which is famous for the Tsingtao brewery. I am drinking it neat, and not getting any bad aftertaste or throat burn.
The English brand name is a clumsy play on the Chinese brand name “zhen ai” = distinguished affection or “be inclined to be distinguished.”

He’s doing what he always does. He also projects like IMAX - claiming others are breaking the laws that he’s actually broken. When he talks about illegals, he doesn’t want people to remember that Trump’s golf resorts repeatedly hired undocumented workers and paid them wages far below what they should be paid given what they were being asked to do - and without benefits.
Trump businesses profit - which means Trump profited directly from the hiring of undocumented workers. This was a pervasive and ongoing issue until journalists started prodding the golf resorts and they started firing people.
Trump doesn’t mind illegals when he’s hiring them to maximize his profits. He just doesn’t want the competition, and is pandering to the white nationalist base concurrently.
It’s what he does.

Everything alcoholic I drank in China in 2008 burned my throat. Everything.
So, last night were the BAFTAs in jolly ol’ Brexit-ridden UK. It was a celebration at Royal Albert Hall, and all the big names were there to celebrate the visual arts. Normally I don’t pay too much attention to awards shows… but this year was different.
Mom in law is good friends with the family of one of the screenwriters of the Spike Lee joint - BlacKkKlansman. They won for best adapted screenplay, and we’re over the moon for his achievement (Charlie Wachtel). We got to see a bunch of photos from the awards show with him rubbing shoulders (literally/figuratively) with all manner of entertainers and the Royals themselves.

Liquor has come a long way in 10 years here. Red wine was hard to come by, other than the domestic brands (which are not bad, in fact). Now, imported wines are everywhere. I can pick up a decent label from Stellenbosch in South Africa called Two Oceans for about $10 at a local grocery. I had a Spanish red for dinner, and it was only $5. Nothing wonderful, but drinkable, like the French vin ordinaire.
Some pretty cool ideas on display here.

Congress is trying to keep the shop open, at least.
Key lawmakers plan to meet Monday afternoon in a late-stage bid to avert a government shutdown, trying to revive talks that derailed over the weekend amid a dispute on immigration enforcement rules.
House Appropriations Committee Chairman Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.), Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas) and Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) will attend the meeting, two congressional aides said.
Lawmakers had hoped to reach an agreement by midday Monday, a timeline they thought was sufficient to win House and Senate approval this week. But talks broke down over the weekend, leading to acrimonious finger-pointing and angry outbursts from President Trump.
To avert a partial shutdown set to begin Saturday, the House and Senate must pass identical spending bills that Trump would then need to sign into law.

Going to one of the safest cities in the nation to rail that crime is out of control and that we need a wall.
El Paso crime rates dropped before the wall section was built there, and it leveled off after - showing that there’s no relationship between building a wall and crime.
Given most drugs are coming via ports of entry, the wall will have no effect.
Given most here illegally are on overstay visas, the wall will have no effect.
Trump keeps pushing a wall that a majority of the nation doesn’t want, and that support for the wall is strongest the furthest you are from an actual border.

Trump certainly doesn’t — that was one area of disagreement with Bannon:
From washingtonpost.com:
— During their conversations, there were some moments on-air when Trump and Bannon disagreed. Though not many.
Last November, for instance, Trump said he was concerned that foreign students attending Ivy League schools have to return home because of U.S. immigration laws.
“We have to be careful of that, Steve. You know, we have to keep our talented people in this country,” Trump said. He paused. Bannon said, “Um.”
“I think you agree with that,” Trump said. “Do you agree with that?”—

the r’s in the negotiations know this
as has been said here more than a few times, in general for any serious wall project, there will be planning, studies, feasibility, etc. we all know, not a chance
first, there would have to be direct questions and direct answers as to why a wall would be necessary (ie what exact and specific problems it would be addressing) and demonstrable proof that said wall would work to solve those specific problems.
and that discussion is never gonna happen

re: #194 Eclectic Cyborg
So how conservative is El Paso? Will Trump get a warm welcome there?
I would imagine the welcome could get very heated.
As I said last night, I hope there is no violence of any kind. I think we are at time now when any rally that is against Trump could be messed with by the crazies that Trump revs up. The fact that Beto and others are holding a counter-protest in the same city that Trump is holding a rally could get ugly.
I’ve had (and continue to have) long talks with God about homosexuality.
The fact is in, Jesus’ time, there was no such thing as a healthy, public same sex relationship. There’s also some question as to whether or not the scriptures that reference homosexuality are actually talking about it directly or using the term as a placeholder for perverse sexual behaviors. In addition, the English translation of the scriptures themselves is not flawless because there are some words and syntax from Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic that just don’t translate directly.
Obviously all of us know there are plenty of perverse sexual behaviors that are bad and have nothing to do with homosexuality.
So, I choose to follow Jesus’ command to love everyone and take care of them. I have a gender fluid niece who is going through a lot of crap right now and I’ve told her my home is a safe place for her. She will not be judged, she will not be insulted or demeaned. She’ll be clothed, fed, sheltered and respected.
Because I think that’s what Jesus would want me to do.

I wish I remembered who it was because I’d love to give proper credit, but awhile back someone on here made a joke that Bryan Fischer is a regular on gay hookup apps under the username FischerofMen which is just freaking brilliant.

Not at all. He’s probably the “honest” gays are gross homophobic rather than the fake moral like Pence. Both are awful.

I’ve had (and continue to have) long talks with God about homosexuality.
Rome had an issue with homosexuality, but it mostly involved males who did not produce sons to defend the Republic.
But it is not a large wonder that this disdain was taken up by the Roman Catholic Church and many major denominations of Christianity.

So, here in local Ostrava news, a major building reconstruction is pretty much finished.
Here’s a little backstory: the building was originally intended to be the regional Communist Party HQ. Construction started in the Communist Era, but then the 1989 Revolution came, and of course, that was end of that. The building skeleton (it was referred to locally as the “Skelet”) was left standing while the local authorities figured out what the hell to do with it.
Well, the project is now done.
Here’s before:
and here’s a photogallery of the finished result:
Looks much better.

Meanwhile, the GOP wants to slash SNAP funding, where each dollar of funding ends up generating $1.70. It’s one of the most efficient programs for economic growth and development - all while feeding a population, improving education outcomes, and reducing hunger.
In 2009, the peak year of the last recession, $50 billion in SNAP benefits were spent in local stores, generating about $85 billion in local economic activity, even as the overall economy was struggling.

Three things to remember:
- We all get faster with practice. If you learn easy, light and smooth, fast is almost an automatic natural byproduct.
- Your legs/feet are the engine, like a bike or a car (gears aside). To go faster you spin the engine faster. You don’t change the ‘shape’ of the engine’s movements.
- You can. Half of running is the mental game of convincing yourself you can do what your body already knows it can.

There’s a building at the WTC that’s barely a stub because it hasn’t gotten funding/financing/interest to build until now - 2WTC. For a long time, 3WTC was about 10 stories tall because there wasn’t enough interest to build it out. That’s now done. 2WTC might now get built out despite not having an anchor tenant (Fox was the latest to consider the location, but they bailed).

For those who are interested, here’s an absolutely brutal summation of last night’s Grammy telecast. Brutal cuz it’s true.
What is music to you? To your heart? To your life?
Maybe it is this: Ecstasy and repetition. Identity and release. Music is the electric connection between your buzzing, happy, elated head and the starry dynamo in the machinery of night. Music is the way your heart thumps when the kick drum pushes the air of the old theatre. Music is your connection with the primeval memory of the rhythm of sweatshops and plantations, the high sigh of shtetl weddings, and the sand dances of Saharan ceremony.
Music is memory: Playground chants and first-love stares; tenth grade stargazing and skating on beer slick in sophomore dorm basement parties; evenings spent watching bleached-blonde-dyed Brits scratching the air and climbing imaginary ladders in smoky, blue-lit old vaudeville halls; nights passed sharing stale air with shimmering, sibilant, shrieking cowpunk Canadians in narrow booze cans in the gray hours before dawn; mornings spent mummified in sheets waiting for the record store to open. Music is that song in the car on the way home from Hebrew school, that song bursting into your ears on the 7 train on the way to your new job. Music is the mnemonics of melody, ecstasy and repetition, identity and release.
The Grammy telecast had nothing to do with any of that.
Worth the read.

Here is some carry-over from last night’s discussion.
As mentioned last night by me and others after VB brought it up, this is causing some problems for the new Muslim Congresswoman.
Newsweek - CONGRESSWOMAN ILHAN OMAR SLAMMED FOR ‘STUNNINGLY ANTI-SEMITIC TWEET’
A Jewish advocacy organization has called out Democrat Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, characterizing a tweet she wrote about the pro-Israel lobby as “stunningly anti-Semitic.”
Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnosota retweeted a post Sunday implying that she believed the Israel lobby, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), was paying American politicians to hold pro-Israel positions.
The American Jewish Committee promptly responded to Omar, also on Twitter, positing that: “Suggesting that a Jewish organization is buying off American politicians is both demonstrably false and stunningly anti-Semitic. American politicians are pro-Israel because Americans are.” The advocacy group also called on the congresswoman to apologize.
After the Opinions Editor at The Forward, Batya Ungar-Sargon, tweeted: “Would love to know who @IlhanMN thinks is paying American politicians to be pro-Israel, though I think I can guess. Bad form, Congresswoman. That’s the second anti-Semitic trope you’ve tweeted,” Batya Ungar-Sargon, Omar responded: “AIPAC!”
Neither Omar’s office in Minnesota nor in Washington immediately responde to Newsweek ‘s request for comment about the tweet, which appeared to invoke an old anti-Semitic stereotype portraying Jews as rich, and using their wealth to orchestrate political affairs.
Omar had retweeted the journalist Glenn Greenwald earlier Sunday, who had retweeted a news story about California GOP representative Kevin McCarthy promising action against Omar and the Democratic representative for Michigan, Rashida Tlaib, for alleged anti-Semitism. Omar had captioned Greenwald’s tweet with the comment: “It’s all about the Benjamins baby.”
The congresswoman drew opprobrium from pro-Israel social media users and praise from those who support her position on the BDS movement, which advocates a boycott of Israel over its treatment of Palestinians.
…more at link…
And then this…
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, as well as other Democratic leaders—criticized fellow Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar for what they said in a statement were “anti-Semitic comments” the freshman congresswoman made on Twitter Sunday.
“Anti-Semitism must be called out, confronted and condemned whenever it is encountered, without exception,” the statement released by Pelosi read.
It added, in part:
“We are and will always be strong supporters of Israel in Congress because we understand that our support is based on shared values and strategic interests. Legitimate criticism of Israel’s policies is protected by the values of free speech and democratic debate that the United States and Israel share. But Congresswoman Omar’s use of anti-Semitic tropes and prejudicial accusations about Israel’s supporters is deeply offensive. We condemn these remarks and we call upon Congresswoman Omar to immediately apologize for these hurtful comments.”
This story is developing and will be updated…
