Kurt Vile: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Feb. 6, 2019 | Bob Boilen — Kurt Vile exudes a casualness at the Tiny Desk in his style and body language that is so unlike most anxious artists who come to play behind my desk. Sure, he’s done this Tiny Desk thing before, with Courtney Barnett. But even then, I remember thinking that he’s got something else on his mind — and it made me laugh this time around when Kurt played his opening tune, “Bassackwards,” and sang these words: “I was on the beach but I was thinking about the bay / Got to the bay but by then I was far away.”

That idea of being one place and thinking about another, for me, also connects to the way he plays guitar. He seems distracted, yet the complex guitar lines he so nonchalantly plays, along with his musical mate Rob Laakso, are effortlessly beautiful and lyrical.

After they played two new tunes from Kurt Vile’s latest record, Bottle It In, Kurt goes solo on an older, self-described “juvenile” song from long ago, recently revived during his Courtney Barnett collaboration last year. “Peeping Tomboy” has its own schizophrenic issues as Kurt sings, “I don’t wanna change but I don’t wanna stay the same / I don’t wanna go but I’m runnin’ / I don’t wanna work but I don’t wanna sit around / All day frownin’.”

On the surface, it all can seem just chill. But there’s a lot of rumination in these songs — and even when he’s gazing into the overhead office lights, I think he got his mind on the stars and the world at large.

Set List
“Bassackwards”
“Loading Zones”
“Peeping Tomboy”

Musicians
Kurt Vile - vocals, guitar
Rob Laakso - guitar

This is pretty good:

We all know Trump is a bigot who is never constrained by shame from such displays of hypocrisy. Omar apologized for the tweets, as she should have, but what’s most important about this episode is the fury that came down on her head so quickly — from both Republicans and Democrats.

It should be noted that Omar wasn’t really accurate in describing support in Congress for current Israeli policy as being a result of money from AIPAC. First, AIPAC doesn’t directly give donations, though it has long used its ability to direct donations to help its friends and punish its enemies. But as Ed Kilgore noted for New York magazine, these days, it is the Christian right much more than Jews that is driving U.S. policy on Israel; I once described it with only slight hyperbole as a “world of post-Jewish Zionism, where Israel’s most vehement advocates are people who see it mostly as a tool to use in a holy war between Christianity and Islam.”…

But I think what made members of Congress come down on Omar so hard wasn’t just that she was criticizing the relationship between the United States and Israel, or even the unfortunate way she did it. It’s also that she was criticizing Congress itself, and how it treats Israel.

And the reaction proved the point. In Congress, there has been more discussion about Omar’s tweets over the last 48 hours than there has been genuine debate about the United States’ policy vis-a-vis Israel over the last 10 years.

There are things we might ask if we actually had such a debate, about whether the Israeli government should be punished for its aggressive settlement policy, whether it actually needs the billions of dollars in military aid we send them each year, or even what the United States gets out of this alliance in a post-Cold War world. There are a variety of answers one might offer to those questions, but they don’t get asked, at least not in Congress.

Left over from the previous thread:

Flu is a serious disease.

In the 2017-2018 flu season, 185 paediatric deaths were caused by the flu.

For all ages, the death rate for influenza which sparked pneumonia exceeded 10% (based on death certificates).

30,453 hospitalisations were flu-caused, as found by laboratory tests for the flu. That was the highest ever recorded, breaking the record from 2014-2015.

More on the flu and why it’s a deadly disease which kills far more people every year than all childhood diseases put together:

I guess I was trying to say that, for a festival like that, featuring more than a couple of acts that had just broke out or were fixing to break out real big (Alice in Chains, RATM, Tool), along with some established acts (Primus, Arrested Development), you wouldn’t see a ticket price less than $100-150 these days.

Tilde is the same (though in Spanish it is considered a separate letter from “n,” not an accent mark)
Diaeresis in Spanish is Dieresis

NYT levels some serious charges against Ryan Adams.

Equal parts punk-rock folk hero and romantic troubadour, Adams, 44, has 16 albums and seven Grammy nominations to his name. He has overseen music by Willie Nelson, written a Tim McGraw hit and recorded with John Mayer.

He has also taken a special interest in the trajectory of female artists, especially younger ones, championing them onstage, across social media and in the studio, where his stamp of approval can jump-start careers.

Some now say that Adams’s rock-star patronage masked a darker reality. In interviews, seven women and more than a dozen associates described a pattern of manipulative behavior in which Adams dangled career opportunities while simultaneously pursuing female artists for sex. In some cases, they said, he would turn domineering and vengeful, jerking away his offers of support when spurned, and subjecting women to emotional and verbal abuse, and harassment in texts and on social media. The accounts have been corroborated by family members or friends who were present at the time, as well as by correspondence from Adams reviewed by The New York Times.

Interestingly, cedilla is a Spanish word .

The diacritical mark is no longer used in modern Spanish: all words using “ç” have replaced that letter with “z.”

For example: Historic Spanish començar > modern Spanish comenzar (to begin)

‘Whistleblower’ seeks protection after sounding alarm over White House security clearances (NBC, with video, 2:35)

A White House security specialist is seeking official whistleblower protection from the federal government after raising concerns about “unwarranted security clearances” for administration officials, including Jared Kushner, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

The specialist, Tricia Newbold, filed the whistleblower complaint less than two weeks after she was suspended without pay for defying her supervisor, Carl Kline.

The complaint, which was obtained by NBC News, alleges Newbold raised concerns with Kline about a security clearance for an individual as early as July 2017. The complaint does not identify the person, but sources familiar with the situation told NBC News that it was Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and adviser.

He’s not going to get what he wants for the Wall. He never was, even the R’s recognized it as bullshit.

The majority of Americans recognize it as crap.

The House is going to (finally!) pass legislation that will address climate change, which will be brutally comprehensive because the R’s have stopped anything from happening for twenty years, when it would have been much easier to implement.

Oh, and the Green New Deal is basically an infrastructure plan, not raw socialism. Just read it.

One of the biggest problems for the WH is that Miller has only one area of expertise:

his fascist position on immigration.

He has nothing else to give Drumpf.

When it comes to climate change, tax policy, health care, inequality, or foreign policy, he’s an absolute eedjit.

Which is good for the rest of us.

Over 2 inches in the east bay in the last 24 hours. That’s a lot, a really rainy 24 hrs is usually no more than 1.5 inches, more coming. This will not be good for burn scar areas.

Just checked with the National Weather Service and it’s supposed to 100% that we are getting rain in Las Vegas. It’s been many years since we have had this much rain. In fact, the forecast calls for possible snow this weekend. I’ve moved from the higher elevations where we did get snow, but I’m hoping we get it lower down in the valley where I am now.

The Shines have long been into media and celebrity circles. He’s been associated with the Murdochs for some time, and the entire cabal of milk-the-marks do so much harm that his wife’s anti-vaxx rantings is just the tip of the iceberg.

The current (this morning’s) Wikipedia entry on Bill Shine:

A twin, Shine grew up in East Northport, Long Island, New York.[7][8] He received a B.A. in communications from the State University of New York at Oswego.[9] After college, he worked as a producer for local TV stations on Long Island,[8] beginning in 1985 with WLIG-TV. He married a foolish woman. Although she has no known education in healthcare she constantly makes stupid dangerous posts about Measles and stokes insane Antivax theories on Twitter. If only she would just shut up. He does not have any control over her madness and she will be the end of his career. [9]

Ayep, any talk about “will he sign it?” is rather missing the point that he doesn’t have a choice. There’s no stomach anymore in the Congressional GOP ranks for a shutdown outside of the “Freedom Caucus” who think Donny should have been crowned king two years ago. The bill will pass the House easily, and if McConnell truly is “sick” of shutdowns then he’ll allow it to pass there. Once that’s happened, the only question is how long will it take for Trump to pull out his sharpie and put his EKG “signature” upon it. My guess? Less than 48 hours, after thousands of ATC and TSA agents call in “sick” upon the start of another shutdown.

Why? Because Trump was obstructing justice out in the open, and the rule of law requires action.

You elected to have your gets get vaccines when you elected to have kids. The only restrictions I see are in case of reactions to immunizations.

The four year old cousin of a friend of my son died from pneumonia related to the flu two weeks ago. I don’t know if she was vaccinated, but the chance would have been greatly reduced if she and the people she came in contact with were vaccinated.

Lemme clarify then: I am full in favor of universal vaccinations for all contagious childhood diseases, when it domes to flu shots, I am not opposed to vaccinations as such, just believe that in this case they should be elective.

Flu kills more people every year than all childhood diseases put together. Flu is not a “mild” disease.

Pence and Trump are intent on unraveling the JCPOA - the Iran deal that even Iran is upholding. Iran is prevented from developing nuclear weapons under the deal, and there are strict controls on their nuclear ambitions and research. Material is cataloged and controlled.

Everyone knows the deal is working. Trump doesn’t care. They want to abrogate the deal, and that would increase the dangers to everyone.

No one else should pay Trump any heed and side with them on this. Not the other JCPOA parties, not the EU. No one.

Who benefits from ending the JCPOA? Certainly not the US. This is just more nonsensical blathering from Trumpworld - Pence included.

One has to speculate they are pushing to abrogate the agreement so that Russia can sell nuclear technology to Iran. It would be irresponsible not to.

And since we’re in tax season, I’m sure everyone will be surprised to learn that while they’ll be seeing lower tax refunds, or even have to pay tax…. Amazon is paying no federal corporate income tax for the second year in a row despite having billions in profits. Prior to that, they ended up paying federal tax at a rate of 11.4%.

How does this happen? Because the TCJA didn’t close/end various deductions and credits companies use to shield their profits from tax. They kept those in place, all while limiting deductions and credits for the middle class (the SALT deduction, mortgage interest deduction, etc.)

Bolton’s trying to abrogate the JCPOA because he wants to get started what he failed under Dubya: Regime change in Iran. And Trump wants the JCPOA gone because its part of Obama’s legacy and because he wants some form of military action to give him either a “win” or an excuse (a prolonged occupation) for why voters must keep him in office.

Trump shows nothing but contempt for law enforcement (especially when that law enforcement is doing their job and finding criminality all around Trumpworld). The GOP likewise shows contempt for first responders - see their longstanding refusal to properly fund Zadroga Act for 9/11 responders.

Another example of just how vindictive and petty the man truly is:

However, the conversation took a more confrontational turn when Trump learned that McCabe had authorized Comey to fly home on a government airplane after he was abruptly fired while giving a talk in California. In fact, McCabe claims that Trump “flew off the handle.”

“That’s not right!” Trump yelled, according to McCabe. “I don’t approve of that! That’s wrong!”

McCabe says Trump then ordered him to investigate how Comey got authorization to fly on the plane, and McCabe informed him that it would be difficult for him to investigate his own decision.

re: #195 lawhawk

In regard to the Barr approval, I got an email from Senator Durbin yesterday and wanted to share:

Fellow Illinoisans,

This week, the Senate will vote on President Trump’s nominee to be the next Attorney General, William Barr. During my meeting with Mr. Barr, and when he testified last month before the Senate Judiciary Committee, I told him I was very concerned about his views regarding transparency for Special Counsel Mueller’s findings and executive power. Before he was nominated by the President, Mr. Barr volunteered a 19-page memo to the Trump Administration that outlined his beliefs on executive authority, almost foreshadowing how he would approach the Special Counsel’s investigation if he were overseeing it.

Mr. Barr had every opportunity to assure me he didn’t believe President Trump was above the law regarding certain aspects of the Russia investigation, or that he wouldn’t block Special Counsel Mueller’s report on his findings once completed. He didn’t do that. It turns out he’d also been asked to be part of the defense team for the President. Those are not good circumstances when we consider the job he’s asking for - to ultimately receive the results of the Mueller inquiry and to decide whether to share it with the American people.

Lastly, I am troubled by Mr. Barr’s statements on several issues, including voting rights and immigration. I’m worried he won’t be a strong proponent of protecting the right to vote, and that he will subscribe to the same hardline stance on immigration as his predecessor, Attorney General Jeff Sessions. I’ll be voting against Mr. Barr.

Sincerely,

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL)

He’s a good one.

Actually, I think Trump and his creatures have a lot of respect for “ Law Enforcement” - as long as the laws being enforced are the ones directed at a certain class of crimes/criminals - you know, Those People. But it’s the usual RW dichotomy: crimes like assault, robbery, drug-dealing, etc. (the ones Those People are inherently prone to) have to be dealt with rigorously to protect The Public: cracking down on stuff like financial or other white-collar crimes is unconscionable envy-driven interference in the normal way of business. By “respectable citizens”, of course…

Anne Laurie has a post up about Dolly Parton receving the MusiCare Person of the Year award for her giving out books. Talk about someone who sounds like she’d be a hoot to know, this is from a New Yorker article about the award and ceremony:

“All of my life, I have been known for two things,” deadpanned Dolly Parton, as she took the stage to collect the MusiCares Person of the Year, pausing for effect, “Well, not them.”

“I’ve also been known as a singer and songwriter, too,” the country icon clarified. “Although, I’m not complaining — Ol’ Pancho and Lefty’ve been pretty good to me!” She then confided to the packed-to-the-back-wall crowd assembled at the Los Angeles Convention Center: “Everybody always expects me to do a boob joke, and I like to do that right up front.”

Being honored for her contributions to music, Parton told Vulture on the red carpet, “means more than anything, because if I had to stop everything else and just choose one thing, I’d choose to be a songwriter.”

“I truly, I truly can feel the love in this house tonight — either that or my telephone’s on vibrate,” Parton cracked, telling the crowd she endured the career retrospective with a mix of dismay — “I really thought my hair looked good, back then. Can you believe that hair? Now that’s country music at its finest” — and wry reflection. “Watching them is sort of like watching porn. You’re not personally involved, but you still get off on it. So really got off on this show, tonight. Hey now, don’t blame me. At my age, you’ll take anything you can get. And I’m still hoping that I live long enough to get the Betty White longevity award. I’m working on it.”

Like many people who got their political education from Reagan fantasy fiction, he has no idea that Anticommunism & not pro Democracy was what drove Reagan’s policies in Latin/South America, Asia, & Africa. And that said anticommunism could include tyrants. I don’t think Reagan’s people believed in democracy for minorities. I really don’t.

Segregation wasn’t limited to the South. Before the Civil Rights Act was passed there was a lot of segregation in Western PA not only involving people of color but religious minorities too.

In the Jim Crow states segregation was required by law; it took a change in the law to end it.

In the other states the law didn’t require or forbid it; business owners established whatever policies they preferred.

That’s why Frank Sinatra was able to single-handedly desegregate Las Vegas; he was a big enough star that “Let’s Make Frank Happy” was the policy every business owner preferred.

Even in Dixie, where Jim Crow wasn’t explicitly law, it was the de facto state.

The “Negro Motorist Green Book” came out because of de facto Jim Crow even when the law didn’t mandate that.

For example, you had two motels in a town. One of them would allow anyone with money to stay, the other only allowed whites.

The whites-only motel would spread around “you don’t want to stay at that other place do you? They let anyone stay there (read African-American).”

Same with businesses, &c.

Jim Crow was much more than laws; it was the attitude of all of society in Dixie.

One year after the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., the urgency for new gun restrictions has declined, but roughly half the country is concerned a mass shooting could happen at a school in their community, a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll finds.

In the immediate aftermath of the mass shooting that killed 17 people on Valentine’s Day, 71 percent of Americans said laws covering the sale of firearms should be stricter. Now, it’s 51 percent.

When it comes to whether stricter gun legislation should be an immediate priority for Congress, 42 percent say it should be. In April 2018, it was 10 points higher.

Still, a solid majority — 59 percent — say their first reaction when hearing about mass shootings is that the country needs stricter gun laws. Only a quarter say their first thought is that more people need to carry a gun.

I’m encouraged by that last point but still, it’s amazing how apathetic we become when this stuff fades from our memory…only for this cycle to start again when the next nutjob kills a dozen people with semi-automatics.

We like the “country over party” mentality some of them seem to have. But we say “cautious,” because we have noticed that some of them have this adorable tendency to believe that now that they’re making common cause with Democrats, that we — the people over here who voted for the American candidate in the 2016 election in the first fucking place and aren’t watching our political party implode in a pile of shame, racism and Russian disinformation — should be laying out a welcome mat and giving up our long-held principles just to make Max Fucking Boot or David “I’m homophobic trash but I think I’m pretty gentle about it” French feel like maybe they can feel safe voting for a Democrat. from yesterday’s electoral-vote.com
something you can use if you ever have to have that stupid argument

One of us (Z) lectures regularly to students on the subject of American politics. And in those lectures, the students are always asked, “If someone runs for president on a platform of reining in corporations, saving our environment, protections for consumers, and making sure the civil rights of black folks are protected, what party would they be a member of?” The students, denizens of the 21st century as they are, invariably answer “The Democrats.” Since the question is a blow-by-blow summation of the 1904 platform of Republican Theodore Roosevelt, it’s a quick and easy way to illustrate that just because they have the same name, the Republican and Democratic Parties of 50, or 100, or 150 years ago are not the same as the modern versions.

It’s occurred to me that everyone already pontificating on the Democratic 2020 field seems to have ignored the basic rules around primaries.

Democrats move to the left for the primaries, while moving towards the center in the general.

It’s the same with GOP - they move right in primaries typically and then towards the center in the general.

Why?

Because in the primaries you’re trying to win over the base, but the general is about mobilizing the moderates and independents.

Why is it that everyone always seems to forget this motivation in the primaries? Same with the GND. It’s something that will speak to Democrats in the primaries - which is why McConnell saying that he’s going to throw something out there to vote on as though it’s a threat is such bulkshit and doesn’t exactly spell doom. The GND is something that needs to be fleshed out more and some of the candidates are open to various aspects. Why is that a bad thing?

The GOP thinks so, but most people believe the science behind climate change and that reducing emissions, improving efficiencies, and infrastructure spending are good things.

But all the while, we’re being told that Democrats are in disarray (see Politico, ad nauseum - and with nausea) when there’s actual disarray and chaos in the GOP ranks as the Congressional ranks are pulling their hair out over Trump’s actions - and some think Trump should shut down the govt again (Freedumb caucus - even though the shutdown resulted in a deal on the wall that throws less money than had they accepted the December deal). Trump’s going to try and spin this as a win, but the reality is that Democrats reduced appropriation by a couple hundred million dollars on wall spending thanks to the shutdown.

Here’s Amazon’s statement, via NYT:

After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens. For Amazon, the commitment to build a new headquarters requires positive, collaborative relationships with state and local elected officials who will be supportive over the long-term. While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.

We are disappointed to have reached this conclusion — we love New York, its incomparable dynamism, people, and culture — and particularly the community of Long Island City, where we have gotten to know so many optimistic, forward-leaning community leaders, small business owners, and residents. There are currently over 5,000 Amazon employees in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island, and we plan to continue growing these teams.

We are deeply grateful to Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio, and their staffs, who so enthusiastically and graciously invited us to build in New York City and supported us during the process. Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio have worked tirelessly on behalf of New Yorkers to encourage local investment and job creation, and we can’t speak positively enough about all their efforts. The steadfast commitment and dedication that these leaders have demonstrated to the communities they represent inspired us from the very beginning and is one of the big reasons our decision was so difficult.

Thank you again to Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio, and the many other community leaders and residents who welcomed our plans and supported us along the way. We hope to have future chances to collaborate as we continue to build our presence in New York over time.

I hear there’s a big empty field and a bucketful of stupid Republican politicians in southeast Wisconsin looking to be fleeced again.

Reading between the lines of the Amazon statement, it seems like the company - rather than building a new “HQ2” - is going to simply expand their operations at existing facilities around the country.

Actually, now that I think about it, what Trump’s likely going to do is keep with the fiction that he has other means of getting the money, so he’ll tell his followers that the loss on this bill “doesn’t matter” because he decided weeks ago he couldn’t get the funding for the wall from Congress and so he’s secured funding elsewhere. That the money’s there, the wall’s being built, and the only people who have failed are Congressional Republicans who didn’t fight hard enough against the “radical Democrats” to get the funding America needs to build barriers to stop illegal immigration.

Re: Amazon / NYC (from CNBC)

While polls show that 70 percent of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City,” Amazon said in the statement. The company said it will continue to grow the teams it already has in Staten Island, Brooklyn and Manhattan.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had warned at a news conference last week following the report that the local and regional leaders would have to answer to voters if Amazon did not ultimately bring its 25,000 jobs to the state.

NYS doesn’t have billions it can give away like this without getting something in return. It needs to invest in the mass transit system that would have been severely stressed by Amazon going to LIC. There was some talk about doing something on the fringes, but 3 billion could pay for a good chunk of the 2Ave Subway Phase 2, or making more stations around NYC ADA compliant or speeding the signal replacement needed to run more trains more often and improve capacity.

And after Foxconn in WI, people are wising up to corporate welfare that doesn’t deliver anything but pad the bottom lines of companies.

Oh, and Amazon paid no federal corporate tax this year.

Rep. Omar ‘explodes’ despite video proof of how measured she was. Doesn’t matter, she’s a woman and a Dem, the worst must be believed of her.

Kamala Harris gets the dreaded ‘Lie’ attributed to her in a headline to an article that actually fucking concludes she didn’t lie. Doesn’t matter, she’s a woman and a Dem, the worst must be implied of her even when she’s exonerated.

Warren apologizes for the whole Native American thing, and even shows she never used it for any gain as it was attributed only for census-related things with no benefits attached to the question. Doesn’t matter, she’s a woman and a Dem, so she must be a filthy fucking liar of all times.

Meanwhile, Rep. King is still in office, Esquire is making hagiographies to right-wing teens as ‘All-American’, the Catholic Church exonerates the MAGA Hat class, and no one can actually fucking outright say that Trump ‘lies’ when he blatantly does.

The media has learned all the exact wrong lessons and persists in learning the exact wrong lessons still from every single cycle. They are hellbent on painting Dems, especially Dem women, as inherently and uniquely angry and untrustworthy, persist in giving Trump even more benefit of the doubt and reporting on him at face value, and insist on treating White grieveance as even more valid than ever before while minimizing the hurt of PoCs and other minorities.

That’s one possible scenario. Another is that since Manafort’s already fucked, there’s no reason for him to cooperate further. He’s already going to spend the rest of his life in prison and prosecutors aren’t going to cut him any slack given that he’s used up all his goodwill.

That’s the outcome that Trump wants, but it still means that Mueller and prosecutors in SDNY/EDNY are going to turn Manafort’s life and financials upside down and investigate additional angles that they might have held back on had there been a deal in place.

re: #357 ObserverArt

This is what NYS/NYC were paying to get Amazon:

To facilitate the necessary rezoning for the project, the state will make use of a General Project Plan (GPP), which was used in recent years to advance the Javits Center expansion, Atlantic Yards, and Moynihan Station. (The GPP includes an environmental review and input from the City Planning Commission and local community board, though they’re nonbinding).

The agreement comes with a number of incentives: Specifically, Amazon will receive $897 million from the city’s Relocation and Employment Assistance Program (REAP) and $386 million from the Industrial & Commercial Abatement Program (ICAP). It will receive an additional $505 million in a capital grant and $1.2 billion in “Excelsior” credits if its job creation goals are met. That brings the total amount of public funds granted to $2.988 billion—in other words, the city and state will pay Amazon $48,000 per job.

Amazon could also earn even more tax breaks separate from the city and state subsidies: The census tract in Long Island City where HQ2 (or HQ3) will be built is designated as an opportunity zone under a provision of the so-called Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the tax overhaul President Trump signed into law almost a year ago.

Opportunity zones, the brainchild of Silicon Valley financier Sean Parker, allow people to invest capital gains—the profit made from the sale of an asset like a house, stock, or even a painting—in “distressed” areas and defer taxes on those gains until 2026.

So, the state was throwing nearly $1.4 billion in incentives at the company, and then another $1.7 billion in credits/incentives if the job creation goals were met (prorated). If they fell short on the jobs, the credits would be proportionally reduced - but that would only happen if the state were rigorous in clawing back if the company fell short, and states routinely ignore the enforcement provisions to the benefit of these companies.

Those in LIC worried about the lack of existing infrastructure, the lack of transit investment, and that it would push out lower wage residents who couldn’t afford to live in one of the few remaining affordable places to live in the City now that Amazon and the high wage workers were going there.

All this said suggests that Amazon might take another look at Newark NJ because they’d still have access to the NYC metro area talent pool, transit is good, and NJ will throw billions at the company. Because that’s what states do, even when the company has a trillion dollar capitalization.

New York Magazine

Here we have, in this case alone, every single element one would need to establish collusion. There was a meeting between Trump’s campaign manager and a Russian operative; the discussion of something Russia would gain from a Trump victory (a favorable Ukraine settlement); the exchange of information that would assist Russian campaign intervention (polling data that would allow Russia to target its social-media attacks). Also, they left the meeting place via separate entrances. This isn’t merely suspicious. It’s a scene from The Americans.

And perhaps most curious of all, you have the interest of the president. If Manafort was just running a side hustle behind Trump’s back, Trump would have little reason to care about him getting caught.

I’ve said it before, there’s two basic reasons I can see for voting against Trump nominees:

1. You believe that Trump is corrupt/unqualified for the office and that poisons all of his nominees,
2. You believe that Trump, as president, is entitled to appoint cabinet officials but the particular nominee you are considering is unqualified for the office

Barr has held the job before, so it’s probably fair to say he’s qualified for the position. There’s also the consideration that he is immeasurably better than the person he’s replacing (both the actual AG and the acting AG) and is doubly so compared to other potential nominees.

I see them voting for Barr as being pragmatic, given their electoral situations; all three are in seats that, given a roll of the dice (and them pissing off enough of their constituents), have the very distinct possibility to go red again in their next elections, so they have to choose their battles very carefully, especially since Barr has served as AG before.

What’s even stranger is that the vacancy law was passed in 1998. It’s not like it’s a hold over from a pre-professional Congress that might only be in DC for 4 or 5 months during the year. How it isn’t capped at 90-120 days (that should be enough time to nominate and confirm a replacement), is just strange to me.

State and local governments need to start treating big businesses the way many of them treat profession sports teams: you want to come here, fine, but we’re not building shit for you and we’re not giving you tax money so you can build it.

There’s no reason that a business valued at a trillion dollars needs three billion dollars in kickbacks to open a new office.

i very much see this as Sinema doing political calculus, she ran on the label of being an “independent” legislator, as Barr has held the office before and knowing that he had the votes no matter her vote, she polishes that particular label with this vote. If it was closer, then we would see how she would play it out. There’s little possibility of blowback due to what will likely be revealed as the Mueller investigation unfolds makes it unlikely that even Barr could ignore the evidence that will be laid out for the public.

Amazon was being treated exactly the way big sports teams are treated.

I guess that’s my (southern) California bias showing, where we’ve basically told sports teams to fuck off.

What’s even stranger is that the vacancy law was passed in 1998. It’s not like it’s a hold over from a pre-professional Congress that might only be in DC for 4 or 5 months during the year. How it isn’t capped at 90-120 days (that should be enough time to nominate and confirm a replacement), is just strange to me.

its true newt was speaker of the house at the time

i could be misremembering - i think there was still a general understating that the parties expected to deal with each other as principled actors accepting the implied rules of more or less fair (political) play

no one was looking ahead to where things (in retrospect, and especially with the R’s pushing it) were obviously going - ie Merrick Garland, the moronic hastert (pedophile) rule.

otoh - ben franklin saw this coming in that the only hope for democracy was if people respected each other enough to compromise
- statesmanship is compromise
- it requires a desire for disparate interests to find a common way forward.

I looked it up on wikipedia, it was sponsored by Fred Thompson in the Senate, but the House didn’t really get to act on it because it was attached as a rider to some big spending bill. So it was likely fairly uncontroversial.

Just a friendly reminder, we are now four days short of a month without an actual Secretary of Defense. And it’s been almost two months since Mattis announced his resignation and we’ve not even had a replacement nominated.

That’s some scary shit.

This is a feature, not a bug. Trump wants as few layers between him and power as possible.

What kind of country is USA? It’s not the best in the world where everyone wants to live. You put babies in cages & allow children to be killed at their desks. Your leader is crazy. The fact that you have to specifically outlaw #lynching (of minorites) is absolutely terrifying.

I always laugh when cities/counties/states pay out big money for new stadiums. I think the last publicly built/owned stadium in Southern California was the Anaheim Pond in the early 90s. After the Rams/Raiders/NFL tried to get public financing on a stadium and failed, everyone else was left to build their own damn stadiums.

McConnell then announces that Trump plans to sign the government funding bill and declare a national emergency at the same time.

forget all the arguments that ‘prove’ there’s no emergency
go with ‘congress and the president disagree’ - which means congress knows what it was doing when it debated, decided, and passed legislation

so you
- sign what congress appropriated
- ‘at the same time’ try to end run around congress’s explicit decision that you just approved

yeah, that’ll hold up in court
imagine being the lawyer who has to argue that
