Fox News is laying the groundwork for conspiracy theories about Joe Biden’s health
Fox News spent 2016 pushing unfounded rumors that Hillary Clinton was hiding serious health problems, and it’s gearing up to do the same to former Vice President Joe Biden. Fox News hosts—Sean Hannity and Lisa “Kennedy” Montgomery in particular—have repeatedly speculated about Biden’s health, the Daily Beast reports.
Biden “does look very tired,” Kennedy said last week. “Joe Biden’s tired,” Hannity said the same night. “He does not have the energy for this. He’s not up for this challenge. They’re already hiding him like they hid Hillary. They don’t want him out there.” Kennedy has twice invoked Clinton’s “overcoat,” the conservative theory that a picture showing Clinton with a slight bulge on the back of a jacket was evidence she was hiding a defibrillator (rather than the much more likely explanation that it was wireless audio equipment). And she’s claimed that “He is much more like Hillary Clinton, because if you talk to Democrats, who are working for different campaigns, all of the aggressive gossip whisperers—and this is where the action is happening in terms of opposition research—it’s people having a few drinks at a bar and whispering, ‘You know there is something wrong with the former vice president.’” Because if there’s one person who’s tied in to Democratic gossip networks, it’s a Fox News host.
They’re laying the groundwork here to make this a major conspiracy theory should Biden win the Democratic nomination. And no, Fox viewers won’t notice that it’s the exact same play as Hannity and friends ran on Clinton in 2016, or that she remains healthy, let alone consider what they would say about the health of a Democrat who looked, sounded, and behaved like Donald Trump.
re: #13 Belafon
Hannity does get that Hillary is still alive, kicking and takes long walks through the woods with both her dogs without the aid of a golf cart, right?
Another sign reads: “Cheezborger, Cheezborger, Cheezborger. No Pepsi. Coke,” These words, with Pepsi and Coke in reverse order, were originally popularized by John Belushi in “Olympia Cafe,” an early Saturday Night Live sketch that was inspired by the tavern.[7] Bill Murray and sketch writer (and bit player) Don Novello were regulars at the Billy Goat; Belushi and Murray were natives of the Chicago area, and Novello had moved to Chicago in the 1960s.

Fox viewers (all 2 million of them) will vote for DT no matter what — thinking about reaching them is a waste of time. Everyone else will probably respond to the “yeah, they said that about Hillary” response. Especially when DT’s two hour per day schedule is thrown in.

Was listening to Lawrence this evening while driving home; he had the 1974 speech by Republican Congressman M. Caldwell Butler announcing his support for the impeachment of Nixon. It was a very powerful statement; Butler stood for the rule of law and country over party. I would have said that there are no Republicans today who are capable of taking a similar position — but Amash is a worthy successor. Too bad he stands alone among the liars and cheats that now make up most of the GOP legislators in Washington.

I’ll start here. If you ever smoked it in the past, ease yourself into it by smoking flowers. Don’t go head on into extracts, oils, and whatnot.
If you’ve never smoked it, you can eat it! Edibles are clearly marked for cannabis content in Colorado, by the milligram. Rule of thumb is if you don’t want the walls to melt like when Maureen Dowd ate a whole pot brownie (she never reported *exactly what* she ate, but from her description she ate a brownie that had in excess of 200 mg of cannabis) is start off with 10 to 30 mg, wait a few hours, and adjust dosage from there.
Then again I’ve eaten pot cookies that keep me stoned/baked/blazed/ for hours on end. I didn’t buy those cookies in a store. 😎

Reading the comments was actually educational on this one, because I picked up an argument I will use on the murderous pro-lifers at Apologia Church the next time I’m out there.
Any biologist will tell you that life does not “begin.” That’s a religious concept not a scientific one. Humans like all other living organisms have an unbroken cycle of life stretching back billions of years to the dawn of life on earth.
Humans like other mammals simply have two life stages in their cycle. The haploid stage (sperm and eggs) and the diploid stage (adult humans). Other organisms have 3 or 4 different stages in their life cycle such as insects (egg, larva, adult).
By any scientific definition, sperm and eggs are alive and human life never “begins” it is an endless cycle of life.
As for chance, we are of course all the consequence of billions of possible random combinations of sperm and eggs. Had our parents mated in the slightest different way or copulated 0.01 seconds earlier or later a different individual would have resulted.
Life is a continuum…cells are alive, no?…don’t you worry about the personhood of all that sperm you unload on a regular basis…? That and pushing them on how they want the state to murder women who have abortions.
For the record, I was not a nice person yesterday. I dropped several F-bombs (F OFF) when the pastor brought up Hitler as an example of secular law gone awry. I’m sorry, but that’s not even an argument. I also told a woman who told me she would pray for my salvation that she should pray that she not be an asshat. Yeah, I got chewed out, but you know, they already think I’m going to burn in hell, so why should I conform to their views?
Besides, their views suck. They believe the way you demonstrate you’re saved is by showing the fruits of the Spirit and keeping the commandments. Since I cuss and call their Calvinist god evil, I obviously do not have the fruit of the spirit nor do I keep the commandments.* I pointed out to one guy that Paul used the word skubala (which means “shit”) at one point (Philippians 3:8) to express his complete disgust with righteousness that comes with keeping the law. I am not saying I agree with Paul (in fact, I’ve come to the conclusion that a lot of epistles sound like modern-day theological whining on Facebook), but I did exuberantly point out that Paul did use a ‘bad word’. Several times.
*In my personal religious view, their reliance on personal actions to demonstrate salvation is just making up their own set of laws and I am not going to have any of that. Paul might argue that they’re back to keeping the Law and he didn’t think that was such a great thing.

OK, that beats the cigarette lighter and bottle opener in my phone case.
As a techie: Why? This is a risk waiting to happen. The phone (a ~$1k investment) is at high risk. The 140F heat from the case that’s making contact, the water inside the cartridge
As a medium coffee drinker: Why? There are simpler ways of getting coffee that doesn’t involve bodily injuries.
I can see the use for a simple, K-cup style portable coffee maker. This one tries too much.
World-class trolling…
Wisdom comes from the unlikeliest places. And on Saturday, Ben Bowling, the valedictorian of Bell County High School in Pineville, Ky., made an inspirational appeal that left his graduating classmates and their parents dumbstruck.
“This is the part of my speech where I share some inspirational quotes I found on Google,” he told the packed auditorium. “‘Don’t just get involved. Fight for your seat at the table. Better yet, fight for a seat at the head of the table’ — Donald J. Trump.”
The crowd burst into applause. President Trump is quite popular in Pineville and the surrounding area, which is the heart of coal country and overwhelmingly supported the president in the 2016 election after he promised to bring coal jobs back to America.
Mr. Bowling, though, wasn’t finished.
“Just kidding,” he said. “That was Barack Obama.”
The cheering abruptly stopped. The crowd went mostly silent. There was a lone boo.

Long thread on how Qatar treats its foreign workers coming in to build the 2022 infrastructure. The tl;dr is conditions are horrible and workers are dying.
An investigation by German outlet @wdrsportinside shows what it means to be a guest worker in Qatar’s construction sites, including in those related to the 2022 World Cup, and what’s the human cost of it all.
A thread with their findings.

I’d like to see an effort to mold new opinions in targeted states like MT, IA and CO. None of these states should ever elect Republican senators. As long as we rely on Blue Dogs we will have problems like those caused by Ben Nelson and the ACA. Fucking Lieberman etc.

The issue with voting to keep a ‘democrat’ in a seat simply because he may vote with the Dems sometimes is not a good answer, ever. It’s a akin to saying the democratic party supported slavery in the 1800’s and therefore is tarnished in perpetuity.

Manchin voted with Dem leadership 70% of the time, even the most moderate republicans like Collins and Murkowski only overlapped with the Dems 40%.

I’ll admit his “I regret voting for Hillary” talk is irritating, but his actual votes are more important. And it’s possible he says stuff like this as a means of keeping some semblance of a base back home to compensate for his votes and his party label (although it’s true of course that he just got re-elected).

All that matters is whether he votes to make the Democrat the Majority Leader of the Senate, not who he supports for President. His state is voting for the Republican nominee for President, regardless of whom he supports. Remember: Manchin voted to preserve the ACA. Without him, it would be gone.

At 49-51, McConnell remains majority leader, Republicans control Judiciary and all the other committees, and the Senate remains the place where democracy goes to die.
At 50-50 with a Democratic VP to break the tie, we get Schumer as majority leader and Democratic control of the committees.
If putting up with Joe Manchin is the price of making that happen, I will walk naked down the main drag of Parkersburg trailing a “Thank you, Manchin” banner.

Nope. If it actually is 49-51, McConnell will not fill a SCOTUS vacancy, few if any lower federal courts, and may not even allow a Democratic president to appoint a Cabinet, not to mention that no legislation will pass at all, except in the direst necessity.

Heck, apparently even Sanders, Booker and others won’t allow that. Meaning that the Democrats, IF they win control of Congress, get to pass at most two reconciliation bills before the GOP takes over Congress in the 2022 midterms.

I usually break down and watch a few soccer games out of solidarity here during the European Cup or World Cup, but the scandal with Qatar gives me good reason to ignore it totally.
It will be far more democratic (small d) to scrap the filibuster than having a president have to do anything via executive order.

The issue is the way the filibuster has been weaponized. It was originally used rarely only for very substantial issues of controversy. Now it’s used for everything, except perhaps renaming post offices — and it wouldn’t be surprising if it happened there. Maybe it would revert to its rare invocation if the old rules applied: someone would actually have to hold court speaking the entire time it was in effect.
Of course, the real problem with the Senate is that it is a totally undemocratic institution, where theoretically, right now, Senators representing 20% of the population have absolute control of what happens to the remaining 80%

Both chambers need to be revamped to where the leaders cannot block legislation. That’s in addition to increasing the number of reps so that each represents fewer people.

What annoys me about this is the following. Maybe it’s the unofficial decorum required in a congressional hearing, but Stewart should make very clear who is holding up this bill. Because your average voter may see this and immediately come to the conclusion that “both sides are the same” instead of assigning blame where it should be. I recall reading SOMEWHERE, that it was part of the disposal protocol to make sure that nothing was usable. So, everything gets archived off the device, then the device is wiped (bleach bit…or as morons say “acid washed”), and then you get to smash your device into itty-bitty pieces.
In other words, not only were they not doing anything wrong, they were doing EXACTLY what the Book told them to.

But the Religious Right will not rest until abortion is outlawed Alabama-style in all 50 states and pregnant women are not allowed to leave Gilead.

Back in the 1990s, when I lived in Utah, Utah county prosecuted a guy for renting “hard R” movies put of the back of his video places. It went to the jury and *one guy* hung the jury, saying he could not judge whether the videos violated community standards.
The county put the defendant on trial again, and this time he had to go with appointed counsel since the first trial had bankrupted him. The attorney was a devout but savvy Mormon. He subpoenaed lists of what was showing on the pay per view at the upscale hotels near BYU. Voila! The hotels also served up “hard R” movies for rental. The defendant was acquitted.
I gave water to migrants crossing the Arizona desert. They charged me with a felony.
washingtonpost.com
My case in particular may set a dangerous precedent, as the government expands its definitions of “transportation” and “harboring.” The smuggling and harboring laws have always been applied selectively: with aggressive prosecutions of “criminal” networks but leniency for big agriculture and other politically powerful industries that employ scores of undocumented laborers. Now, the law may be applied to not only humanitarian aid workers but also to the millions of mixed-status families in the United States. Take, for instance, a family in which one member is undocumented and another member, who is a citizen, is buying the groceries and paying the rent. Would the government call that harboring? If this family were driving to a picnic in the park, would the government call that illegal transportation? Though this possibility would have seemed far-fetched a few years ago, it has become frighteningly real.

It sure is!! What a moron. I thought Conservatives were opposed to snowflakes and whining.
Jurors only string the prosecution along when it’s a courthouse near some good restaurants and the bailiffs bring them a good lunch.
Otherwise, they want to make a decision and get out of there.
As the Brexiteers continue to unravel the UK, the Guardian runs an editorial that hits the nail on the head:
The Tory contest shows that the Brexiters’ dream is dying before their very eyes
This has been the most stubborn, parochial delusion in Tory thinking on Brexit: the belief that it is an internal party matter; that solutions can be cooked up on the backbenches and dictated to the EU. In that view, Theresa May’s failing was not her lack of fluency in the language of European interests but her refusal to explain British demands loudly enough at the concessions counter in Brussels.
That misperception sabotaged diplomacy during the article 50 negotiations, and is now feeding complacency about a no-deal Brexit. The Tory contenders who claim to be relaxed about that scenario trade in two vast falsehoods. One is that willingness to rip up draft treaties and renege on financial commitments somehow makes a country more credible in international negotiations. The other is that going through with such a threat hastens the day when Britain can sign free-trade deals elsewhere.
There are many points of analogue between Trumpism and Brexit, and between the GOP and the Tories.
Regarding the latter, both parties are making delusional thinking the central rallying points of their politics.
The Brexiteers refuse to accept that in UK-EU negotiations, it’s the UK that has the weakest hands. And now the Tory party leadership feels the need to swallow this delusion, even though in the past many of them readily were anti-Brexiters.

The impact of your bacon:
Des Moines: It’s a stinky distinction, but the state leads the nation when it comes to the amount of poop its people and livestock generate, research from a University of Iowa scientist shows. Christopher Jones, a UI research engineer, calculated Iowa’s population would be the equivalent of 168 million people, based on the waste from the state’s 3.2 million people and nearly 110 million chickens, pigs, turkeys and cattle. It’s about as many people as in Bangladesh, a country in south Asia. Factor in land size, and Iowa ranks first in the nation for waste creation, Jones writes in a blog he’s titled “50 Shades of Brown.” “Just to ensure clarity, in Iowa, we are generating as much fecal waste in every square mile as 2,979 people,” he says. “For reference, Iowa City is the second-most densely populated city in Iowa and has 2,775 people per square mile. So imagine an Iowa-sized Iowa City.”

Some needs to ask her what she thinks she can get done. Obama got two, the economy and health care. And McConnell is setting up the courts to act just like the ones FDR had to deal with.
Unlike the FDR era, a Democratic president with party control of the senate will do away with the procedural filibuster and then do a reduction in force on the federal courts, obliterating Trump’s picks. It will be nasty, but necessary. The country collectively isn’t going to sit by for 40 years waiting for a court change, when the popular will of the people was for Clinton to be president.
re: #285 Hecuba’s daughter
Exactly, so they are not pro-life. Migrants lives would matter to them if they were.
re: #293 DangerMan
Exactly.
Anti-abortionists are working out their existential crisis. They have to believe there is something magical in a zygote, or their religion falls down.
So to prop up their religion, and their religion’s dominance in society, they have to be anti-abortion. Because if they admit that a zygote does not magically get imbued with a “soul”, and if they give up the idea that each person was individually “knit together” (as in the famous psalm) by God… then they have a hard time ever arguing for a soul or for being special in the eyes of their God.
Anti-abortionism rose to prominence (in the late 1970’s) once the anti-evolutionists (who are mostly the same group as the anti-abortionists) started to realize how big they were failing in controlling education. That is not just a coincidence.

Well, it will take a couple of centuries for sea level rise to force millions of Floridians elsewhere. I expect the populations to move the shortest distance possible, probably to places like Georgia, whose own coastal cities will be swamped too but there is plenty of land in the hinterland.
And we can’t assume what the US will be like in a century or so. If Trump has shown us anything, it is that the US is not immune to self-harming atavism.
While the big basketball game dominated US television last night, I see that both Hannity and Tucker’s shows did quite well:
