Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jun 21, 2019 • 9:02:31pm

One of the NOAA youtube channels I watch put the following video up today (it got a bit of press too):

Here Be Monsters: Giant Squid Filmed in America’s Backyard

Most of the squid that these undersea cameras come across are the smaller kind, while Architeuthis dux is quite elusive:

In 2004, Japanese researchers took the first images of a live giant squid in its natural habitat,[4] and in July 2012, a live adult was first filmed in its natural habitat off Chichijima.[5][6] In 2015, another video sighting was released.[7] In June 2019, scientists reported the video appearance, for the second time, and for the very first time in waters of the United States, of a giant squid in its deepwater habitat.

re: #1 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

The flashing lights are part of MEDUSA, an lure meant to imitate jellys in the deep, in order to attract predators.

The giant squid figured out pretty quickly that it was not edible.

So apparently James Clyburn and John Lewis have Biden’s back.

“We met with George Wallace, we met with Strom Thurmond, we met with people who arrested us and hit us over the head with nightsticks. Because when your constituents need you to get something done, you meet with and work with whoever you have to meet with and work with to get it done.”

Trump shitting all over the Pentagon top brass that presented him with strike packages, impugning their professionalism by lying about not being proactively briefed on the casualty estimates will absolutely erode morale. He’s already done this to the FBI & intel community.

Do you actually think he paid attention to those figures or recalled anything told in the briefing? Someone on TV must have directed him to follow up with this question.

Nah, he just got cold feet and needed someone else to blame. He never gave a shit about any casualties, but someone probably did convince him that it would quickly spin out of control and that he wouldn’t be able to blame Democrats for that.

Personally, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that “someone” turned out to be Vladimir Putin. Putin is foul, but he’s certainly no fool, and he would easily comprehend the possible international and domestic consequences of an unprovoked attack on Iran.

And let’s remember, Trump listens to Putin - he wouldn’t just dismiss out of hand any advice Putin might have.

Seven motorcyclists are dead after colliding with a pickup truck in New Hampshire

Seven motorcyclists were killed and three others injured when they collided with a pickup truck going the opposite direction in New Hampshire, police said.
Authorities received a call around 6:30 p.m. Friday about a motor vehicle crash on Route 2 in Randolph, New Hampshire State Police Capt. Chris Vetter said.

Meanwhile, in Oregon:

Right-wing militia groups across the Pacific Northwest are mobilizing to prevent Oregon state police from arresting Republican state senators who went into hiding on Thursday in order to prevent climate change legislation from passing.

All 11 of Oregon’s Republican state senators are currently on the lam, with some leaving for Idaho in an effort to deny the Democrat-controlled state senate a quorum to pass a cap-and-trade bill. In response, Oregon Governor Kate Brown (D), citing a provision in the state constitution that allows the state to “compel” absent lawmakers to attend legislative sessions, dispatched state troopers to bring them back.

Maybe it’s time to call up the Oregon National Guard; unfortunately, the DOJ can not be relied upon. This is moving into outright domestic terrorism - and it needs to be suppressed, nipped in the bud.

And if/when the MSM fails to challenge that assertion, under the wings of the Magic Balance Fairy, then shit has the potential to go downhill at lightning speed.

Essex council proposes £25.92 ‘lifting charge’ to help elderly up when they fall

local council has defended plans to charge pensioners £26 to help them to their feet if they’ve had a fall at home.

Tendring District Council, in Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, has come under fire after proposing a £25.92 additional annual charge to around 2,500 Essex residents who use its Careline service. The “lifting service” will mean Careline staff go to the home of the elderly person with a touch of a special alarm button.
Michael Le Cornu, chairman of the Tendring Pensioners’ Action group told the Mirror it meant people would in effect be “penalised for falling”.

Don’t let Trump hear about this. He’ll privatize the service, then they’ll charge $500 and throw you in a cage if you don’t pay.

re: #61 MsJ

In 2028, trump would be running from a prison cell, a nursing home or a casket.

And, disgracefully, would probably still garner >40% of the vote….

Though “Trump 2024” might not be that much of a total fantasy (nightmare scenario, though, certainly). While the provisions of the 22nd Amendment are pretty clear:

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.

it makes no mention of a specific consecutive-term requirement, i.e. the “Grover Cleveland” scenario is still a Constitutional possibility. Though - disgustingly - the incumbent POTUS is the only one covered in that circumstance….

And your solution is to antagonize these new residents? Smart.

Texas is working overtime to ensure that these Hispanic residents will never be able to vote even if they are citizens. That’s the Texas way. If the Hispanic citizens actually voted, Beto would have been Senator. But voting disenfranchisement and suppression of non-whites is the Texas way — and the GOP way nationwide.

Fortunately, I’ve never needed to try that. These are the healthiest 12 yr. old cats I’ve ever met. One of them had ringworm when I got them (brothers) from the shelter, so I treated both of them with weekly baths (and an ointment on the affected gato), and I’ve just continued with the baths with decreasing frequency. We’re down to 3 a year.

Given that they can’t stop the demographics (they’re coming from inside!) and they can’t re-hide very well (still trying), the future registered voters will change some things (for the better, IMHO.) It will accelerate. Trump is the reactionary speed bump.

So yesterday in sleepy Santa Maria CA just down the road from me, four people were killed, two golfers by a guy who shot them after going back to his dwelling get his gun after an arguement, then two more after the shooter set his trailer on fire and killed himself and someone else in the structure. Firefighters were unable to quickly put out the fire because his stockpile of ammo started going off because of the fire. I don’t know for sure, but I suspect the killer had a MAGA hat and was a Fox “News” fan.

DOJ attorney Sarah Fabian is trending on Twitter this morning. She’s the woman who argued earlier this week that providing soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and blankets wasn’t part of “safe and sanitary.”

(Video cued up to the point where Fabian is arguing with Judge Berzon. The judge sitting on the left is Wallace Tashima, who was interned at a camp here in Arizona as a child, so he KNOWS.)

17-56297 Jenny Flores v. William Barr

There are some people arguing that she’s just doing her job, but no. While yes, every client should have representation, some arguments should be beyond the pale. Like this one. Especially in a situation where it looks like our government is violating the Geneva Conventions and the human rights of these children. What you’re supposed to do in a situation like this is tell your bosses, no, you can’t make that argument, and then quit. But Sarah Fabian sold her soul already—she’s the same woman who couldn’t work on a critical immigration case one weekend last year because she had to dogsit.

Oh, courts can be set up, even if we’ve pulled out of the current regime. Also, keep in mind that travel to other countries could be dicey for a lot of people if charges of crimes against humanity come down. We had a British couple who were trying to missionize our village in Italy. They frequently dropped by to use the loo and speak English. traditionally, a judge usually just has to say something like “are you sure about that, counsel?” or “you may want to reconsider that point.” I argued a case before the Ninth Circuit about 10 years ago now, and Kozinski* was leading the panel… the issue was what constituted delivery of disclosure documents under the Truth in Lending Act. Opposing counsel (for the bank) tried to argue that giving the borrower a copy of the disclosure to sign, and then taking it back for the file constituted delivery of the disclosures. Kozinski called him on that bullshit pretty quickly.

*Yes, he ended up being a fucking creep, and that was probably the reason he was never elevated to the Supreme Court, but he was a very good legal mind.

There’s so much to scream about (emoluments, Mueller Report, obstruction of justice, Iran…) that they probably have to apportion these things out.

(By the way, I’ve now heard back from my Senator, Kamala Harris. She thinks the Mueller Report is a road match to impeachment. Of course as a Senator, she can’t do much more than call for it at this time.)

Thanks, but it didn’t work. I don’t understand why it only happens on one computer. My laptop has exactly the same version and Firefox settings and tweets appear fine on it.

I had a problem like that a while back, but didn’t find a solution — after a while, and a few restarts, it went away. In the meantime, reloading individual comments also loaded the tweets.

why every democratic officeholder is not screaming bloody murder about these detention center crimes is beyond me

To me the answer is (disgustingly, disgracefully and disturbingly) quite simple:

Not.
Enough.
People.
Care.

As long as the victims of these brutalities aren’t real “citizens”, and can be blanket-categorized as “illegal aliens”, there is an unfortunately large bloc of the citizenry who are either going to applaud the brutality/ill-treatment, or, at best, shrug. And so far, not enough of a bloc of people offended by it to make a political difference.

And yes, one can argue (correctly, but irrelevantly) that asylum-seekers aren’t “illegals” per se, and it’s not going to make one bit of difference. To the Administration (and the bigots who support them) such distinctions are meaningless. All they see are hordes of impoverished brown foreigners trying to get into “our” country, for nefarious reasons. Dissuading them by tossing them into concentration camps is just fine - and just more reason to applaud Trump and his gang for actually “doing something about them illegals”….

I hear all four are much more polite today. ///////// I only the other golfers had pulled out their shootin’ iron.

[Embedded content]

There are some people arguing that she’s just doing her job, but no. While yes, every client should have representation, some arguments should be beyond the pale. Like this one. Especially in a situation where it looks like our government is violating the Geneva Conventions and the human rights of these children. What you’re supposed to do in a situation like this is tell your bosses, no, you can’t make that argument, and then quit. But Sarah Fabian sold her soul already—she’s the same woman who couldn’t work on a critical immigration case one weekend last year because she had to dogsit.

I hope she gets so famous that she’s reduced to eating frozen Swanson dinners at home.

I was at a hotel several years ago and couldn’t get the key card to open my door to save my life (it was actually my first experience with key cards). A middle-aged black gentleman was also in the process of getting into his room with his young son. “Do you have any idea how these things work?” I asked him, rhetorically, considering that he obviously knew how they worked based on his open door. He came over and showed me a couple times (one of those time release things where you can’t get the door open until the card exits the reader). Then he handed me the card back and said, “Now you try it.” I knew that I’d stumbled across a high-school teacher at that moment.

Is it illegal to threaten law officers with violence or not? (I’m probably late to this topic…)

Republican Sen. Brian Boquist implied that police officers who pursued them should be ready to die. “Send bachelors and come heavily armed,” Boquist warned police in a televised interview shortly before his walkout. “I’m not going to be a political prisoner in the state of Oregon. It’s just that simple.”

State police said they were aware of Boquist’s remarks, but were not commenting on them. Boquist and his colleagues are supported by several right-wing militias that made more explicit threats.

After Oregon Gov. Kate Brown called on state troopers to return the lawmakers to the capital, the paramilitary group the Oath Keepers suggested violence against her.

“Gov. Brown, you want a civil war, because this is how you get a civil war,” the Oath Keepers wrote on their public Facebook page. Beneath the post, Oath Keeper fans suggesting hanging, arresting, or taking up arms against Brown.

oh boy

Kessler Topaz Meltzer & Check, LLP has filed a class action lawsuit against Ford Motor Company (“Ford”) over reports of faulty water pumps causing engine failure. The complaint alleges that, beginning in 2007 and continuing through the present, Ford has equipped millions of vehicles sold under the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury brand names with the Ford Cyclone Engine, also known as the Duratec engine. Unbeknownst to purchasers and lessees of these vehicles, the Ford Cyclone Engine contains a defect in design, manufacturing, materials and/or workmanship that causes the water pump to suddenly and prematurely fail—before the end of the useful life of the engine—and can lead to catastrophic engine failure.

Problem is that the water pumps are INSIDE the engine…
