I did the skijoring event at the Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival back in 2005, got pulled by a horse down Lincoln Avenue. Steamboat’s main drag gets covered in a foot of trucked in snow for the event. I almost crashed after I hit the jump, if I had held on to the rope I would have crashed real hard. Horses at full gallop are fast.

I’ve been towed into the backcountry by snowmobile many many times. Those things are way more predictable than horses.

Little Cinnamon was acting terrified of everything. Any little sudden sound or movement and she poofs up like a pufferfish. Pepper was acting all dominant and grumpy. But no tufts of fur, no injuries visible.
So we separated them into closed rooms. Laundered everything they lay on. Scrubbed out the cat boxes. Then carefully “reintroduced” them. All is well, apparently.

I know it’s night crew and nobody may be here but I’ve been working on something and I have to share.

I’ve been reading the Mueller Report and am almost done. I’m writing up a Summary that I may post here, or FaceBook, or both. I’ve found that typing up and talking about things helps you retain and understand more than just reading alone. So most of the way through, in light of recent events, I pieced together the arc of Manafort and his influence on the $391m aid package to Ukraine just released. This is swampy AF.

1. 2016 RNC platform language on support for Ukraine changed from ‘lethal assistance’ to ‘appropriate assistance’

2. $391 aid package Trump just got impeached over included Javelin missiles, so a soldier can take out a tank. Useful in that war/region.

3. Just found out that according to the stipulations for receiving the aid, the Javelins are not to be used in Donbas where there is combat operations; they are to be stored hundreds of miles away

4. Manafort was super hot to negotiate a ‘peace deal’ in Ukraine during and after his Trump campaign tenure. The deal wouild include Russia keeping Crimea, Ukraine keeping what’s left, except for the Donbas region: that would become a new nation/state that is pro-Russia and, get this… Yanukovitch would be the leader. It is well known that Manafort was still on the campaign well after it was announced he was no longer with them. That influence likely continued up until Mueller was directly investigating Manafort.

We all know Manafort was in deep debt to Deripaska feeding him polling data during the campaign. But the polling data wasn’t worth the real debt to Deripaska, just little nuggets to show good faith and get back into good graces. What would be a big move by Manafort to settle with Deripaska? A ‘Peace Deal’ stopping war that carves up Ukraine giving Russia the pieces it wants, with a smaller Ukraine to deal with in the future.

In a rational world this would be earth shattering. But now it’s just like, meh. I pine for a world where this would be earth shattering again.

Meanwhile, this is news out of Chicago - Boeing CEO has stepped down. Shares halted.

This should have been done months ago - but we know that Boeing failed in every way imaginable in their handling of the 737MAX launch and reaction to the crashes. It’s also a failure of the FAA and oversight agencies because they took the company at its word that it wasn’t any different than prior models, when there were significant differences in how the plane operated, flew, and computer systems functioned.

Throw in the Starliner failure to meet up with the ISS, and the company is reeling.

I was reading Hope Dies Last, the autobiographical memoir of Alexander Dubcek who was instrumental in the Prague Spring and later Czechoslovakia’s transition to democracy and subsequent separation. So, this happened over the weekend. There was a derailment in Harper’s Ferry WV - several freight cars derailed off the bridge over the Potomac River, causing damage to the bridge, closing significant parts of the National Park site.

We were there just a few weeks ago - having walked over the very path adjacent to the track - there’s no timetable for when the path will be reopened - you can see from photos the entire path is wiped out for several hundred feet.

John Brown’s armory is just behind the freight train and the overpass at the center of the photo.

Germany had a similar thing with the Diesel scandal, namely, industry trying to cover up its own failures and oversights, but that scandal just resulted in a lot of air cleanliness standards being violated, not multiple fatal crashes.

That sounds right, actually. Boeing didn’t want the hassle of a re-cert process, so they sold the 737 MAX as a simple “upgrade”.

Douglas lost the engineers to the bean counters around 1960. Douglas himself retired in disgust. A few years later it was swallowed by McDonald. Then the bean counters destroyed McDonald (see the DC-10’s design horrors all driven by cost) and eventually it was absorbed by Boeing. Then the bean counters forced the engineers out at Boeing and it’s been all downhill there ever since. Issues with many programs all around saving money - the plant in South Carolina is all about that too being that it was put there only because it’s a Right To Exploit state.

At the moment, Lockheed Martin is doing well enough by sticking to the usual Lockheed plan of action - barely adequate designs with cool looks and backed up by huge bribes.

I don’t know how to break this to the Trump supporters, but lifetime tenure goes away for a judge if the court he/she is in goes away. Do not be at all surprised if a Democratic president simply, systematically, abolishes one court system at a time and has a majority senate simply restock with people Democrats want. The Mrs. uses Ghirardelli - widely available, good quality, and kosher. I think a bunch also call for corn syrup to give sheen.

Democrats aren’t going to abolish the courts. Those judges will persist for decades, because impeaching a judge is like impeaching a president - rare.

Far more likely is that Democrats will push to expand the federal bench to dilute the right wing extremists Trump’s installed. Splitting the 9th in to at least 2 or 3 circuits would be the logical point here. You could also adjust the 10th to reorganize the 9th, but that’d be a more complex task in dealing with precedent to follow.

Other changes that could reduce the damage? Create a method to eliminate lifetime appointments to the federal bench - 10 year terms, and stagger the turnover the way the Senate has classes - every other year a group is picked.

My mom swears by scharfenberger.com. 91 and still baking.

Mrs dm can’t have chocolate since the lung operation. So it’s n/a in our place.

1 1/2 years since the surgery and she’s shoveling sand and mostly doing whatever she wants. She’s in great shape (I always thought so).

The evaluations for judicial candidates in Illinois will occasionally describe someone as having good temperament but lacking the knowledge or experience to perform the job, but that doesn’t prevent anyone from getting elected or retaining their position.

The sad thing about this is that Jesus tells his followers in the Gospels the equivalent of: “Hey, just so you know. I can do some great things for you. I agree with you, no Democratic president is going to appoint anyone from the Federalist society. However, one of the problems with the current lower court stacking is that it gives a large number of “traditionally qualified” candidates who are at best hacks, and at worst true believers.

But, having a Supreme Court justice who was a state supreme court judge, or say a constitutional law professor at U. Chicago with some legislative and quite a bit of executive experience would also work.
