Donald Trump’s Anti-Windmill Rants Are Getting Weirder: “Fumes Are Spewing Into the Air!”

“Ya wanna see a bird graveyard?”
Politics • Views: 27,963

Not much left to say about this deranged man who would be king, except to note that this time around his anti-windmill obsession has some colorful new details, like the massive amounts of gases and fumes they “spew,” and the bird graveyards they create.

I guarantee this is the first time you’ve heard a president say to an audience, “Ya wanna see a bird graveyard?”

“Gases are spewing into the atmosphere.”

Yes, yes, these windmills have opened secret portals to Hell and are spewing forth the sulfurous screams of the damned! I hear, and smell, them every night. The dead birds are sacrifices to keep the accursed Duct of Damnation open until Earth is hell itself and libturds are back in the White Power House!

What’s the state of American wind power manufacturing?
(2016)

Ohio boasts the highest number of wind-related manufacturing facilities with over 60 plants, followed by Texas (38), Illinois (35), North Carolina (27), and Michigan (26). Although much of the Southeast currently lacks wind farms, it’s a wind manufacturing hub, with more than 100 wind-related factories.

The U.S. wind industry supply chain includes eight utility-scale blade facilities, nine tower facilities, and four turbine nacelle assembly facilities. Last year, 88 percent of the wind capacity installed in the U.S. used a turbine manufacturer with at least one U.S. manufacturing facility. According to LBNL, the share of domestic manufacturing content for nacelle assembly exceeds 85 percent, while towers are between 80 to 85 percent. Blades and hubs also have strong domestic content, estimated between 50 to 70 percent.<

From that last link, a story about Chinese intellectual property theft:

“Rather than pay AMSC for more than $800 million in products and services it had agreed to purchase, Sinovel instead hatched a scheme to brazenly steal AMSC’s proprietary wind turbine technology, causing the loss of almost 700 jobs and more than $1 billion in shareholder equity at AMSC,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Cronan.

We were driving through Ladysmith, Wisconsin when I noticed several horse-drawn-wagons along the backcountry roads. We slowly passed them and waived as we drove by. As we approached the third wagon, I noticed something behind it. When I got closer I saw an Amish person snow-skiing behind the wagon. They went up and down the side of the road, slaloming the electrical poles. I slowed down and waited for cars to pass me so I could pass by on the left and decided to shoot a short video while waiting

I think someone told Trump that wind turbines do in fact have a carbon footprint associated with their manufacture, installation and service. That footprint is basically irrelevant however since wind power projects break even on both energy and carbon offset after six months.

So Trump, being a gibbering fucking idiot, processed all that into a bizarre rant about fumes ‘n shit that has no resemblance to reality.

32
BigPapa  Dec 22, 2019 • 6:14:00pm

Carbon footprints of manufacture are common talking points against renewables, and I’m sure Trump never thought about that until somebody said it right in front of him now the lightbulb went off and we’ll never hear the end of it, including how he figured it out all on his own.

Skijoring. Never done it with critter-power, just snowmobiles and SUSVs. With 4-to-10 guys hanging onto a long rope

I did the skijoring event at the Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival back in 2005, got pulled by a horse down Lincoln Avenue. Steamboat’s main drag gets covered in a foot of trucked in snow for the event. I almost crashed after I hit the jump, if I had held on to the rope I would have crashed real hard. Horses at full gallop are fast.

I’ve been towed into the backcountry by snowmobile many many times. Those things are way more predictable than horses.

Local forge here does quite a bit of work for the wind industry, keeping people employed in this depressed area.

From their site:

Wind
In the rapidly growing area of wind power, we supply mission-critical components such as wind hubs, bedplates and gearbox housings, along with other complex cast components. We produce castings for wind turbines ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 MW, which can measure more than 15 feet in dimension and exceed 40,000 lbs. As ever-larger second- and third-generation turbines move from the drawing board to reality (3.0 MW+), our unique manufacturing capabilities will enable us to keep pace with the global wind industry.

Cats. The wife and I had to pull out the Cat whisperer pro tips in the last couple days. Our two cats, Pepper and Cinnamon had some kind of falling out while we were away for a day. Little Cinnamon was acting terrified of everything. Any little sudden sound or movement and she poofs up like a pufferfish. Pepper was acting all dominant and grumpy. But no tufts of fur, no injuries visible.
So we separated them into closed rooms. Laundered everything they lay on. Scrubbed out the cat boxes. Then carefully “reintroduced” them. All is well, apparently.

When Trump was elected, a lot of us Democrats in red states kind of went underground for a bit, especially here in the area of Texas I live in where Democrats only represent 25% of the population. It took a few people speaking out to let others know that they weren’t alone. Maybe the subscriptions will let liberal - people who actually try to follow Jesus - Christians that they aren’t alone.

I know it’s night crew and nobody may be here but I’ve been working on something and I have to share.

I’ve been reading the Mueller Report and am almost done. I’m writing up a Summary that I may post here, or FaceBook, or both. I’ve found that typing up and talking about things helps you retain and understand more than just reading alone. So most of the way through, in light of recent events, I pieced together the arc of Manafort and his influence on the $391m aid package to Ukraine just released. This is swampy AF.

1. 2016 RNC platform language on support for Ukraine changed from ‘lethal assistance’ to ‘appropriate assistance’

2. $391 aid package Trump just got impeached over included Javelin missiles, so a soldier can take out a tank. Useful in that war/region.

3. Just found out that according to the stipulations for receiving the aid, the Javelins are not to be used in Donbas where there is combat operations; they are to be stored hundreds of miles away

4. Manafort was super hot to negotiate a ‘peace deal’ in Ukraine during and after his Trump campaign tenure. The deal wouild include Russia keeping Crimea, Ukraine keeping what’s left, except for the Donbas region: that would become a new nation/state that is pro-Russia and, get this… Yanukovitch would be the leader. It is well known that Manafort was still on the campaign well after it was announced he was no longer with them. That influence likely continued up until Mueller was directly investigating Manafort.

We all know Manafort was in deep debt to Deripaska feeding him polling data during the campaign. But the polling data wasn’t worth the real debt to Deripaska, just little nuggets to show good faith and get back into good graces. What would be a big move by Manafort to settle with Deripaska? A ‘Peace Deal’ stopping war that carves up Ukraine giving Russia the pieces it wants, with a smaller Ukraine to deal with in the future.

In a rational world this would be earth shattering. But now it’s just like, meh. I pine for a world where this would be earth shattering again.

Are there any rules in place anywhere to remove judges who are corrupt or just plain not qualified? Because if that’s do-able, work should begin on that end. Each appointee needs to be looked into and the results made public. Anyone with that big an effect on daily life of millions of people should expect scrutiny. Commercials on TV if need be. Whatever fucking works.

I think “strongly urge” could be effective; essentially put all the incompetent and crazy judges under a microscope with serious investigations into their conduct, especially within the Federalist Society. Most of these people are not used to any sort of real scrutiny, and it’s likely a fair number of them won’t deal very well with it at all.

We have one supposedly coequal branch of government that has had almost no oversight, and that has to change.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

Trump’s dumbassery knows no bounds. Whether it’s talking about wind power or LED bulbs, he’s a waddling tangerine toddler who hasn’t got a clue about anything he says or does. His first impulse is to do whatever will profit him. His second is whatever racist or misogynistic claptrap comes to mind.

There’s no third.

Those are his guiding principles.

So, he’s railing on and on about being impeached. Fuck him. If he thinks he should be exonerated, put on evidence that says as much. There isn’t any. But he can let his henchmen testify under oath that they did what Trump already said that they did - break the law.

Meanwhile, this is news out of Chicago - Boeing CEO has stepped down. Shares halted.

This should have been done months ago - but we know that Boeing failed in every way imaginable in their handling of the 737MAX launch and reaction to the crashes. It’s also a failure of the FAA and oversight agencies because they took the company at its word that it wasn’t any different than prior models, when there were significant differences in how the plane operated, flew, and computer systems functioned.

Throw in the Starliner failure to meet up with the ISS, and the company is reeling.

But did Santa give him his Golden Parachute?

The aerospace company announced that chief executive Dennis A. Muilenburg is resigning and being replaced by board chairman David L. Calhoun. Boeing has been upended this year by a massive crisis over crashes of its 737 Max airplane and, more recently, a flawed rocket launch.

It really is a new Cold War and our CinC is an easy mark for dictators. I was reading Hope Dies Last, the autobiographical memoir of Alexander Dubcek who was instrumental in the Prague Spring and later Czechoslovakia’s transition to democracy and subsequent separation. So, this happened over the weekend. There was a derailment in Harper’s Ferry WV - several freight cars derailed off the bridge over the Potomac River, causing damage to the bridge, closing significant parts of the National Park site.

We were there just a few weeks ago - having walked over the very path adjacent to the track - there’s no timetable for when the path will be reopened - you can see from photos the entire path is wiped out for several hundred feet.

John Brown’s armory is just behind the freight train and the overpass at the center of the photo.

Beria interestingly I heard wanted co-existence with the West. He definitely was the most vile of Stalin’s lieutenants. You never know. Stalin definitely was on the verge of another large purge and had already persecuted many Jewish doctors in the USSR at the time of his death in 1953.

The 737 MAX was, apparently, a new airframe. And a rather bad design at that.

Wasn’t/isn’t, though, the core of the 737 MAX problem being that it isn’t a “new” airframe, but an old one with a new wings/engines configuration? And that Boeing sold the G on the idea that it was just another “upgrade” in order to avoid an extensive (and expensive) recertification process? Despite the fact that the new configuration altered the plane’s maneuvering characteristics enough to necessitate the auto-system workaround that 1. They didn’t tell anyone about and 2. Didn’t work well?

Germany had a similar thing with the Diesel scandal, namely, industry trying to cover up its own failures and oversights, but that scandal just resulted in a lot of air cleanliness standards being violated, not multiple fatal crashes.

That sounds right, actually. Boeing didn’t want the hassle of a re-cert process, so they sold the 737 MAX as a simple “upgrade”.

Douglas lost the engineers to the bean counters around 1960. Douglas himself retired in disgust. A few years later it was swallowed by McDonald. Then the bean counters destroyed McDonald (see the DC-10’s design horrors all driven by cost) and eventually it was absorbed by Boeing. Then the bean counters forced the engineers out at Boeing and it’s been all downhill there ever since. Issues with many programs all around saving money - the plant in South Carolina is all about that too being that it was put there only because it’s a Right To Exploit state.

At the moment, Lockheed Martin is doing well enough by sticking to the usual Lockheed plan of action - barely adequate designs with cool looks and backed up by huge bribes.

Just a drive-by since I have too much to do this morning, but conservatives wingnuts are already discussing that. Some Supreme Court case related to Nixon supposedly said the Senate can do whatever the hell they want and no one can review it. Could be true. That would also have the side benefit of having lots of lower courts with judges with lower court experience to chose from whenever there’s a Supreme Court nomination, and far fewer of the ideological nominees with the approval of the Federalist Society.

re: #164 steve_davis

I don’t know how to break this to the Trump supporters, but lifetime tenure goes away for a judge if the court he/she is in goes away. Do not be at all surprised if a Democratic president simply, systematically, abolishes one court system at a time and has a majority senate simply restock with people Democrats want. We aren’t going to sacrifice two generations on some kind of suicide contract with constitutional niceties. There’s nothing, at least that I know of, stating that appelate courts, lower courts, are inviolable. There is dissolution. There is also court packing.

No way is a Democrat going to abolish a court. Not going to happen. It’s possible that some of the appointments could be impeached if they engage in inappropriate conduct but that would be very few.

Supreme Court nominees don’t have to be judges. In any case, a Democratic president will not appoint anyone who receives the blessing of the Federalist Society; Democratic nominees for judicial positions are blessed by the ABA, not a group of reactionary fanatics who masquerade as a legitimate legal organization.

Hmmm I have been looking over online recipes for chocolate ganache and they all say to use top-of-the-line bittersweet chocolate. Not the chocolate chips that have been stashed at the back of the pantry since 2007.

The better quality chocolate, the better tasting the ganache will be.

The Mrs. uses Ghirardelli - widely available, good quality, and kosher. I think a bunch also call for corn syrup to give sheen.

The ABA is a nonpartisan legal professional society.

Competency is their key metric in judging a nomination. Trump’s continually ignores competency to put right wing hacks on the bench, and McConnell rubber stamps those picks.

The Federalists are a right wing legal org that serves to further their right wing agenda.

re: #164 steve_davis

Democrats aren’t going to abolish the courts. Those judges will persist for decades, because impeaching a judge is like impeaching a president - rare.

Far more likely is that Democrats will push to expand the federal bench to dilute the right wing extremists Trump’s installed. Splitting the 9th in to at least 2 or 3 circuits would be the logical point here. You could also adjust the 10th to reorganize the 9th, but that’d be a more complex task in dealing with precedent to follow.

Other changes that could reduce the damage? Create a method to eliminate lifetime appointments to the federal bench - 10 year terms, and stagger the turnover the way the Senate has classes - every other year a group is picked.

Unlike many of the Trump lower court nominees, both Gorsuch and Kavanaugh did receive ABA support. The ABA did start a reconsideration of Kavanaugh after his appalling performance in the Ford hearing, but he was approved before they completed their review.

Mrs dm can’t have chocolate since the lung operation. So it’s n/a in our place.

1 1/2 years since the surgery and she’s shoveling sand and mostly doing whatever she wants. She’s in great shape (I always thought so).

Question: can a judge be impeached for incompetence? Or does it require criminality or inappropriate conduct?

The evaluations for judicial candidates in Illinois will occasionally describe someone as having good temperament but lacking the knowledge or experience to perform the job, but that doesn’t prevent anyone from getting elected or retaining their position.

Of the 180 or so district and appeals court judges Trump has nominated the ABA has given 9 of them an unqualified rating and 2 of those nominations were withdrawn so only 7 currently sitting would fail the ABA test. Point is, it wouldn’t be that hard to appoint plenty of “qualified” right wing hacks with the ABAs blessing.

The editor of Christianity Today is the same as Jeff Flake or Joe Walsh or David Jolly — only willing to take action when they no longer have to face the wrath of the Trump base. Perhaps his decision to retire was prompted by his disgust with the evangelical support for Trump — but that would prove only how corrupt white evangelicals are today and there is no doubt that he realizes this. He didn’t criticize Trump for his deeply non-Christian behavior earlier when it was on display for all to see.

The sad thing about this is that Jesus tells his followers in the Gospels the equivalent of: “Hey, just so you know. I can do some great things for you. However, if you choose to follow me, some people are really not going to like it. You WILL get some grief and some blowback, but don’t worry about it, I’m always here for you and in the end and better things will come from sticking with me than from running away.”

I agree with you, no Democratic president is going to appoint anyone from the Federalist society. However, one of the problems with the current lower court stacking is that it gives a large number of “traditionally qualified” candidates who are at best hacks, and at worst true believers.

But, having a Supreme Court justice who was a state supreme court judge, or say a constitutional law professor at U. Chicago with some legislative and quite a bit of executive experience would also work.
