Song for the Day: Madison Cunningham, “The Age of Worry”

As I looked through your requests this week, most of you cast your vote for a song by the great #JohnMayer. “The Age Of Worry” came to mind. I’ve thought of these words almost weekly during all of this, and don’t think it could be more fitting. Thanks for writing this one, John.

I also want to dedicate this cover to the #BootlegTheater. That was the first stage I was allowed to stand on as a pre-adult, and has been home to many important memories since. I’m hopeful that it will be for many more to come. Much love to you, #SidTheCat, and #BootlegTheater, for opening your doors to us in the way that you have. For those of you who are concert-goers, and wish to help them out during the coming months, visit this link: https://linktr.ee/bootlegtheater

Wingnuts are claiming that Sen. Rand Paul opposed the anti-lynching bill because he wanted to strengthen it.

a) Sure, Jan.
b) If the bill was found to be weak, it could be strengthened later.
c) Fuque Trump, from far north Texas (the Nebraska suburb of it).

CL’d:

Pumpkin time.

We’ve lost 42 million jobs, which the Department of Labor admits is an undercount, and the absurd early reopening of certain businesses in mostly red states has forced some workers to balance their health with unemployment benefits, and Mango Mussolini Fuckwit claims SUCCESS!! WE’RE BACK!!

It isn’t. We aren’t. We have a long hard slog ahead of us, and we are nowhere the end of the shitshow.

You know how you show them that’s horseshit? You show them the video of his speech, where he whined that the bill was the exact opposite because (according to him) just giving someone a bruise could land them in jail for lynching.

Nah, they’re probably trying to say that he thinks the sentencing is too light, but he thinks the charging guidelines are too strict.

Remember, that’s how Bernie gets to preen about how he opposed the Crime Bill despite voting for it: “There’s things I liked in it, but overall I opposed it.”

Today in Nebraska protests:

In tiny Harvard, Nebraska, the town’s only black man organized a Black Lives Matters rally that drew many of his neighbors and a sympathetic police chief.

In the northwest Nebraska college town of Chadron, dozens of students others voiced their solidarity with the Black Lives Matters movement.

Across the state, there were no incidents of violence or property damage. In most of the protests, the police worked with the protestors.

Local law enforcement leaders react to Floyd case (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, two minutes ago)

TL;DR version:

“Sick to my stomach; sad to see it.”—Scott’s Bluff County Sheriff (sad?)

Chadron’s police chief says he doesn’t know any racist cops, and the subject of race doesn’t come up. He says the murder puts a stain on his profession. He says he doesn’t know anyone who would say “I’m completely racist” (no kidding).

Scottsbluff’s police chief says he wants all the facts to come out in court. From what he can tell, the man was properly secured in custody, and then he was suddenly on the ground and being killed. Even if they had cause, they should have immediately gotten him into a rescue position. He says he’s never seen anything like that.

The Cheyenne County Sheriff thinks its important to get the charges presented correctly rather than quickly. He then says he doesn’t understand the end goal of all the rioting and looting. He also says he’s “disappointed” in that officer and those who stood around and watched him. (Remind me not to disappoint the sheriff in Sidney.)

Yup. When I got pulled over a couple years ago for speeding on US-30 just outside Pine Bluffs, Wyo. by the Nebraska State Patrol, when the officer asked for my license and registration, the first thing I did was told him where they were (my wallet in the dash console and in the glovebox).

He didn’t have his gun out or his hand on his holster (white guy in Smart car with grey-haired wife doesn’t look particularly dangerous), but I was not about to do a damn thing without permission first.

In order:

“Sad” is a massive understatement, unless you’re only “sad” because the incident shown a spotlight on the rotten underbelly of American law enforcement.

Oh, I believe he doesn’t know racist cops, he just knows cops who he doesn’t view as racist because they make sure couch their views in their work environment. You know, the “joke” told in the break room that got snickers alongside mild admonishments to not tell that “joke” around others. Or the assholes who use words like “thugs” and “trash” but only ever in reference to certain suspects. Or has a habit of coming in with minority suspects sporting new bruises/welts that happened because “resisting arrest” or “fleeing the scene.” You know them, you just tell yourself that they can’t be racist because they don’t scream “Ni-CLANG!” when they’re around you.

Scottsbluff may never have personally witnessed it, but I’m sure he’s seen plenty of “subdued suspect” lines in reports. Or a lot of suspects complaining of neck pain and the arresting officers telling them to “stop faking.” And can’t for the life of him explain why so many of his officers keep getting hit with brutality accusations when nothing shows up in their reports and all their partners insist that they saw nothing that was against “department policy.”

And Cheyenne is really saying that if there hadn’t been protests, then the “investigation” could have concluded as it always does: With no charges being brought because the evidence is “inconclusive” or that the AG/DA/prosecutor couldn’t find enough to win in court.

The details of the racial harassment are at Wikipedia.

In 2007, while a 17-year-old senior in high school, Owens received three racist death threat voice mail messages, totaling two minutes, that were traced to a car in which the 14-year-old son of then-[Stamford, Conn.] Mayor Dannel Malloy was present. Joshua Starr, the city’s superintendent of schools, listened to the voicemail messages and said that they were “horrendous.” Owens’ family sued the Stamford Board of Education in federal court, alleging that the city did not protect her rights, resulting in a $37,500 settlement in January 2008.

She also ran a blog in 2015 while she was a VP for marketing at a private equity firm called “Degree180” which attacked conservatives and mocked Donald Trump.

She then tried to start a Website called socialautopsy.com in 2016, with the goal of tracking down people who made offensive posts on social media, and index them by name. That drew a whole bunch of controversy from all sides of the doxxing debate, with both liberals and conservatives condemning the Website.

The Website was to be funded by Kickstarter; they suspended funding over the proposal to dox people and she never started it.

She was then doxxed herself. Gamergaters started promoting her as a victim of “liberal intolerance” (there was no evidence it was liberals), followed by Milo Yiannopolis and Mike Cernovich promoting her as a victim of liberals. She claims she became a conservative “overnight,” as liberals “are the real racists.”

(More likely, she sees who it is easier to grift from.)

And like others, she doesn’t realise she goes under the bus as soon as they find a new black friend.

The worst case of it I recall in recent times was former GOP chair Michael Steele. In Mr. Steele’s case, I believe he wasn’t there to be the “black friend” but sincerely wanted to work to help the GOP; he did help with the GOP regaining control of the Senate, arguably a feather in the cap of any political party leader.

After his term was complete (unlike the Dems, the GOP hires people to be the party chair, which is something I think the Dems should adopt as well), Republican politicians started condemning him, particularly at CPAC, where they said the only reason the GOP hired him was “because he was a black guy.”

Former FBI deputy counterterror director Terry Turchie told Fox News’s Laura Ingraham on Friday when speaking on the news that the riots occurring throughout the United States in response to the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police is not unlike the extreme leftist Weather Underground Organization (WUO), claiming one of its intentions was to “attack and dethrone God.”

Ben Sasse (R-NE) started the first quarter of 2017 with an approval/disapproval rating here of 55/26.

Since 2019’s third quarter it’s been dropping rather quickly. It’s at 45/35 (the remainder unknown or no opinion). Working on that 20% of fence-sitters might help to flip the seat.

One can make the case that he is neither a role model nor a hero, and perhaps he had been doing things that warranted arrest, but not summary execution.

People often wonder how German citizens could stand by and do nothing as innocent people were beaten or executed in the street by the Gestapo. Surely they had to know that it was wrong, right? This was their neighbor, their friend, someone they said “Hello” to on the street, and now he lay in that same street with his brains blown out as men in long coats laughed and spat on his corpse. Why didn’t anyone speak out?

Did the chowderhead former FBI guy on FOX make up an agenda for the former Weather Underground terrorist group (unless it’s the weather-forecasting Website acquired by The Weather Channel he’s referring to—perhaps Tropical Storm Cristobal is part of the secret plan to dethrone God).

The list on FOX doesn’t even make sense. The graphic says:

The Weather Underground’s Strategy

* Destroy Capitalism
* The weapon of choice—systemic racism and police racism
* Identify the victim classes
* Organize the victim classes
* Engage in international solidarity with the global movement
* Attack and dethrone God.

Aside from this guy pulling this out of some very large arse, if each of these is a step to achieve a goal, then #2 is not a step. And in #5, what global movement?

The final step (presumably the goal), “attack and dethrone God” doesn’t really seem to accomplish much. What is this, underpants gnome reasoning?

Wingnuts to boycott (again) the NFL in three… .

NFL says players’ protests during national anthem should be allowed (BBC)

The National Football League has said players should be allowed to protest during the national anthem as rallies against racial discrimination continue.

“We were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said.

The NFL had previously banned players from dropping to one knee, a practice started by Colin Kaepernick in 2016.

Funny, because until 2009, players did not even come out until after the National Anthem. But then the US military started paying the NFL to promote for “patriotism” in games, probably inspired by the sight of soccer players singing their national anthems before international matches.

Here’s a hell of a thought: Let’s go back to the old rules, with players not coming out until after the anthem, and people won’t have to be confronted with images of kneeling players.

I can see a possible solution for the NFL: Go back to the old system.

That said, it’s probably like trying to not wear a flag pin as a politician now. Once Reagan started that, any politician not wearing one was seen as unpatriotic by wingnuts.

I was once asked in a village board meeting why I didn’t wear one, my answer was “I don’t wear my patriotism on my lapel.”

These people—the expert, FOX, its audience, the president—have zero interest in whether their characterization of leftists is real or not. They aren’t interested in the project of describing what is. What they want is a story that lets them do whatever they want…and what they want is for anyone criticizing them to be God-defiling baby eating monsters because then they can jack off in glee rather than empathize with the people getting chewed up by LEOs. So there’s no incentive to admit that ATTACK AND DETHRONE GOD is trending because they themselves introduced the idea, and even less incentive to acknowledge that they’re being mocked. Quite the opposite, if they continue to take the notion seriously it gets them more justification to view their fellow Americans as not-American and depraved in ways that merit harm and death.

These interludes of stupid are experiments in full eliminationist thinking. They’re trying for a formula, a perfect sexy guignol story to explain why not only does there have to be the existing system of cruelty and corruption, but there should probably be a bigger, more violent system that simply removes agency from lots of people. Consistency and reason don’t matter because the proposal is that anyone that applies reason to the assertion is the enemy. And the end point is always that the crazy claims will become reasonable and “true” once everybody that would contest it is dead or terrorized into silence.

This works like the radio channel that powered the genocide in Rwanda. It was never about proof or logic, but about creating an instant emotional bypass in which your neighbor is now a Hutu and a Hutu deserves to be raped with bamboo poles and left to bleed out while you rob their house. This works like the Ahnenerbe, in that you start from the conclusion and create the language that sounds like expertise to explain how the unspeakable act was necessary, natural, inevitable, and self defense. And ultimately it will work like the process of forgetting that means that most Americans didn’t know about Tulsa and Rosewood, and don’t think too hard about what it meant for the Southerns to believe slaves were animal- and -childlike- but sexually assault enslaved women.

It doesn’t make sense because fascism never makes sense: it’s a bundle of narcissistic want demanding to be treated as an ideology, offended when people accurately observe that its intolerance is intolerable. Each participant is intoxicated. When they’re afraid, the fear is still gratifying because it confirms their worldview; and from the fear they stoke anger and the anger is justified because the fear is “true” and from there comes permissions for greater and greater cruelty and abuse of power.

One of the things I keep pointing out is that a lot of people in reactionary circles have already signed on, implicitly, for things they supposedly abhor. De facto, they’re fine with sexual abuse as long as it happens within a power framework they’re comfortable with. De facto, they fucking love civilian casualties because they’ve built a framework in which everyone they don’t like is a combatant. De facto, they don’t care the slightly about basic civil liberties and find the idea of depriving others of those liberties basically erotic.

Laugh, but just keep in mind that their plan is to have enough power to declare 2+2=5 while renacting My Lai.

When FOX posted obvious propaganda, lots of people would come into their Twitter timeline and “correct the record” (expose their readers to facts).

Twitter is a very easy way to promote yourself, and it’s free. FOX didn’t give up free promotion for nothing. My suspicion is they didn’t want their followers to be exposed to alternate viewpoints, or facts showing their viewers that FOX was flat-out wrong or lying about something.

I learned about Rosewood from the John Singleton movie of the same name. Not the only reason I’m obsessed with this topic, but I can remember that feeling of discontent and anger that events like that happened and were just kind of swept away. I mean, people don’t even know that “race riots” used to mean whites heading into an ethnic or black neighborhood.

That whole thread, all the responses, every last one, needs to be read.

As someone who’s 61 I can honestly say I didn’t think about how much has changed for the worse since I was in school (and this doesn’t even include Active Shooters). We’ve gone from Officer Friendly to Major Shitkicker Do As I Say … and we all put up with it.

And as a white woman, my privilege had never been clearer. Man.

No wonder so many people accept the authoritarian worldview. We’ve slowly been accustomed to it.

that is just the point, he sees no distinction.

He insists that police will quit en masse if we start making them more responsible for their actions.

There was a terribly misleading headline that the entire Buffalo NY terror response team resigned after two of its officers were suspended for brutality.

But there are always nuances: the 57 officers did not quit the Police Force, the just resigned from the response team…

So the latest FB rants are criticizing initiatives to “defund the police” in Knoxville, Minneapolis and elsewhere.

This is not about abolishing the Police Force, it is about leverage to get them to reform when nothing else works.

But it is being sold as leaving us prey to gangs of “armed young men” as Tucker Carlson menacingly refers to them.

Fuck Trump, Fuck the GOP, and fuck the mendacious media that enable their regressive and bigoted agenda.

So what’s all this nonsense about protesters actually seeking to attack and dethrone god. That’s a pretty fucking puny god you have there. Be a shame if anything happened to it.

And if it’s not that your god is so puny that it can be dethroned by people protesting police abuse, then why does it need a spaceship (literally and figuratively - Trump is the one who demanded a space force and is trying to take all the credit for having a way for Americans to travel to space on board an American-built rocket.

It’s all projecting like IMAX all the time with these people, and the body count continues to grow - not only from covid19, but the numbers of people assaulted by cops at the protests continue soaring.

Heck, the guy who gives sensitivity training to incoming cops in San Diego was assaulted by cops at one of these protests.

These protests are again revealing how poorly law enforcement does its job of actually protecting the communities they’re charged with protecting.

re: #165 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

An example of southern fear of “the other”:

My husband and I bought our home in 1977. Our son was 3. He’s 26 now. There was 18 acres of land owned by a family next door and in back of our house. Then there’s another house on the other side of me that’s a rental house. My house and the rental used to also be a part of that 18 acre family compound. Think of a rectangle with a corner missing. This family was on this land since before the Civil War, which was a point of pride for this family. Their 18 acres also had a total of 5 houses, the original home built 100 yrs ago and updated every 10 yrs or so, then the Patriarch house and homes for his three daughters and his elderly sister.

The rental house on the other side of me was home to the owner’s daughter and her 5 yr old son when we moved here. Turns out the place was a meth lab, I ended up calling Children’s services on the mom for letting her little boy run around in underwear in 30 degree weather. He was filthy and hungry. The family was white. The family compound on the other side of me didn’t really pitch much of a fit over this. The house had to be hazmat cleaned and remodeled. It’s been a rental ever since and the last two families (after a gay couple lived there for a few years) have been black, with black teenage boys.

That was a bridge to far for the family compound and they sold all that land to a developer about 3 yrs ago. I now live next to a fucking “over 55 community” with 60 huge houses on tiny plots of land. That madness ended up with us having a rat problem when the land was razed because(to no ones surprise) they had been using the wooded area behind the original house as a garbage dump. They were just dandy with a fucking white run meth lab next door but a black family with teen boys(one of whom plays some serious drums and is an honor student) was the last straw. So the idiots moved to where they have a 3 hour round trip commute to work every day. Also they made sure the buyer of their land did not approach us to make an offer and never said a word. I found out when the county put up signs for a public land use meeting and had surveyors measuring along my property line.

All because the neighborhood was getting too dark and scary. They had proud deplorable signs in their yard when Trump began that crap. They also claim to be super duper Christian. I loathe their lying asses. They are the ones that destroyed the damned neighborhood. Not a couple of really nice and cool black teenage boys. Their mama raised them right, they’re really nice kids.

It’s got zero to do with economic anything. These people had money and land. Originally they had something like 100 acres that was sold off in bits over the generations to get them through any economic issues. They were that scared that they could see black teens skateboarding or walking on the sidewalk in front of their house that they had to sell it all and move north of here to an area with all white faces. Such tough people. I heard for 20 fucking years about how that family compound was sacred and part of their history and blah blah. Yeah right sure.

Indeed. The Great Society and its promise of programs to benefit everyone and not just whites people caused the collapse of the New Deal coalition. There’s no reason other than racism to go from backing enthusiastically the New Deal to embracing proponents of supply side economics.

Interesting, the real reason those 57 ERT officers stepped down:

“In light of this, in order to maintain the sound financial structure of the (Buffalo Police Benevolent Association) PBA it will be my opinion the PBA NOT to pay for any ERT or SWAT members legal defense related to these protests going forward. This Admin in conjunction with DA John Flynn and or JP Kennedy could put a serious dent in the PBA’s funds.”

The head of the PBA fibbed, saying they resigned in disgust, but really it’s because the PBA stopped backing them.

I don’t think his hands are forced at all. There are a lot of qualified women being looked at. I’m glad that Biden wants to have a team that looks like the country rather than a 1950’s board meeting.

When Justin Trudeau became Prime Minster, a reporter asked him why half his cabinet were women. Without missing a beat, he said because it’s 2015 (or what every the specific year). This shit should not be controversial.

This chart is a perfect illustration of the maxim popularized by Mark Twain: There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.

Even if accurate (numbers are apparently not correct — but the same issue applies if they were), the chart is deceptive and highly misleading. As labeled, it shows the change in employment over the month , but that representation fails to capture what is really happening to the economy. The change may matter, but what’s really important is the actual level of unemployment. A meaningful chart would have shown the unemployment rate. It’s a warning to all to be careful in reading any chart and think about what it displays. This chart was deliberately and maliciously designed to conceal what was really happening. Rather like the Georgia chart that misrepresented the trend in Covid cases.

GUILFORD, Maine — President Donald Trump visited Maine on Friday and toured the Puritan Medical Products facility in Guilford. It was a big day for the small town, and for one of Maine’s oldest businesses.

Trump toured the production line wearing no mask or protective gear and even put a swab near his nose.

“I shouldn’t tell you this, but I use it every other day,” Trump later admitted to the workers during his speech.

According to USA Today, the company will ultimately be throwing out the swabs that were being manufactured during his visit. The exact reason or how many is unclear at this time.

Puritan is considered one of the top manufacturing companies in the world making specialized testing nasal swabs for COVID-19. Maine and the rest of the U.S. are facing a shortage of testing supplies. Source: NBC News Center Maine

The special note said that if this ‘misclassification error’ had not occurred, the ‘overall unemployment rate would have been about 3 percentage points higher than reported,’ meaning the unemployment rate would be about 16.3 percent for May, but that would still be an improvement from an unemployment rate of more than 19 percent for April, applying the same standards.”

Meanwhile, anybody younger than 50 really only knows Weather Underground as either that weather news service or the program that runs nightly on the Weather Channel.

What, did Faux get tired of Saul Alinsky already?

The Weather Underground died 5 years after Alinsky (1972) — And when Fox was ranting about Alinsky 12+ years ago, very few people even know who he was. The old Weather Underground is familiar only to elderly like me. A lot of these ancient tropes have no impact on the younger generations because they are totally unfamiliar with the groups and people involved.

It looks like it’s having an effect. A Morning Consult poll 5/31-6/1 showed 55% in favor of calling in the military. A 6/3-6/5 poll shows only 42%.

The original movie (1962, Frank Sinatra, Lawrence Harvey, Angela Lansbury) probably hasn’t been seen by the under-40’s.

But the 2004 remake (Denzel Washington, Liev Shreiber, Meryl Streep) did pretty good box office and was nominated for a bunch of Golden Globes.

There will not be a military coup. The consequences to our nation would be catastrophic.
Of course, having snipers out there could lead to an assassination — which would be terrible too and make Trump a martyr. I do not believe that the snipers will fire on demonstrators — that would be disastrous. Let’s just hope we get through this without more violence and that Trump and his evil regime are deposed the traditional American way — through the November election. Because you know that NO MATTER WHAT Trump does at the debate - he could sit on the floor pissing his pants for 20 minutes - Fox, OAN, and every RW hate-talker in the country will be gushing rhetorical orgasms about how “TRUMP WON!!”, “JOE GOT OWNED!!!” and “THIS PUTS IT AWAY”!!! , and never mind what it actually looks like. And the “MSM”, of course, will likely equivocate and “bothsides” anything short of said piss-a-thon….

That is the only way we can survive this turmoil,

Has any president since say 1900 felt personally threatened by demonstrators in DC?

That isn’t “a blogger”. That is Tamino, from Open Minds, the best explainer of statistics on the web, the man who almost single-handedly destroyed Watts up With That.

Yeah, the lack of forgiveness from liberals and progressives is a problem.

Consider people warily? Sure
Expect A TON of redemption behavior? Absolutely.

But this binary thinking, never allowing a converted foe into the tent is crap. It’s the same behavior as the other side. And we’re better than that.

Interesting, the real reason those 57 ERT officers stepped down:

The head of the PBA fibbed, saying they resigned in disgust, but really it’s because the PBA stopped backing them.

So, two competing thoughts here.

From the point of view of the people responsible for Buffalo police: They don’t want to be on the “tactical squad” or whatever bullshit it’s called, sack ‘em. Their union has abandoned them.

From the point of view of Buffalo police officers: You need a new union. May I suggest the IWW? One Big Union! One Big Strike!

Nah, the union hasn’t abandoned them, but is threatening to withhold certain benefits (namely legal protection) if they don’t make a big public scene in “protest.” From the video of the shitheels cheering at the courthouse, I don’t get the feeling it was a hard choice for them to make.

The biggest issue: A lot of businesses that received PPP loans have to rehire their staff in order to qualify for loan forgiveness. While the self-owned and franchise locations might try to power through the rest of the year, you’re going to see another round of lay-offs as soon as the paperwork to forgive those loans is processed.

THE ECONOMY IS RECOVERING, WE DON’T NEED TO PAY YOU LAZY LAYABOUTS, GET BACK TO WORK

And despite the fact that Minnesota is entering “phase 3” of its “Stay Safe MN” program, which introduces indoor dining and most businesses (such as salons and gyms) at 50% capacity / maximum 250 people, the toothless state GOP is still trying to castigate Governor Walz and strip his emergency powers so we can forcibly reopen. I don’t understand what these people want, I mean, we’re making progress reopening the economy and we’re doing SO WELL controlling the pandemic… Oh, wait, that’s right - they want us all to die horribly so they can prove their worth to the Dear Leader and make Minnesota Republican.

But isn’t it true that many of the looters and rioters are not actually members of the community? Some are anarchists, some are white supremacists trying to disrupt peaceful gatherings, and some are just garden variety thieves taking advantage of a situation.

Probably not. Some are obviously from outside, but blaming all disorder on “outside forces” is a great way of avoiding looking at reality. And since when are “garden variety thieves” not “members of the community”. Do people have to be saints to be gain sympathy?

In 2016 CA election, Trump got 31%. That’s more than 4 million people.

Even in the most liberal of liberal cities, you don’t have to travel hundreds of miles to find right-wingers. They’re vastly outnumbered in liberal places, but they’re not far away.

(Stephen Miller is from the People’s Republic of Santa Monica. He may have lived in the same zip code as Tom Hadyn).

The man is a menace.

Oh, they know why.

You’d think by now that these companies would do everything they can to isolate their product when Trump visits. He won’t be able to tell (or even care about) the difference anyway. They could bring in boxes of out-of-date or defective products that were slated for dumping anyway.

Any company that invites Trump should know that they have to do this if they don’t want to wreck production.
