Trump Refuses to Condemn White Supremacism, Calls on Violent Racist Group to “Stand By”

Politics • Views: 23,642

MP4 Video

This was the most important (and most horrific) moment in tonight’s unbelievable shitshow. Instead of taking the opportunity to condemn white supremacists, he did the opposite, and called on the violent white supremacist group Proud Boys (by name!) to “stand back and stand by.”

Shut up Trump.

The Proud Boys need to be classified as a terrorist organization. That way, we can deal with them the same way we deal with al-Qaeda or Islamic State.

The white supremacist bully gangs are utter cowards and entirely incompetent, but there are millions of them and they are over-dosing on confidence and arrogance, thanks to Cheeto’s endorsement.

I don’t think I’ll be alive
If I have to wait ‘til five.
David, have a heart and please fill up my bowl.
Yes, I am fat. Does it matter any way?
I’m just a kitty-cat. Ignore how much I weigh.
If I had food, I would eat everything.
I am purr, I am a biter too.

I really feel so sick after watching these past few years of Trump. I’ve never liked conservatives or the Republican Party. My family has for the most part been tied to the Democrats as long as I can remember but I never thought that the GOP would fully embrace fascist thuggery.

Grandma told me about the 1936 election when several GOP bigwigs came into Grandpa’s market and they tried to pin an Alf Landon sunflower on him…Great Grandpa picked up his handy baseball bat and started singing the Internationale…The Republicans cut chase and ran out of the market.

By the way 1936 was the first time Pennsylvania adopted the secret ballot to be put in metal boxes. Before that colored slips would be put in glass jars and there were GOP checkers at every poll making sure that factory workers always put the blue (Republican) ballot in the glass jar instead of the yellow Democratic or pink Socialist ballot…but they rebelled in 1912 when a lot of green ballots for Teddy Roosevelt filled those glass jars and the mill owners were PISSED!

Well, this is interesting. A couple of religious stories in the news.

First we have Thom Rainer, former president of Lifeway, the publishing arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, being sued by his former employer. It’s not sexy. It’s basically about violating a non-compete clause in his contract when he went over to Tyndale.

religionnews.com

The next story could be consequential for someone I know. Christianity Today ran a story delving deep into the sleaziness that is Ravi Zacharias, an “apologist” who died last May. Zacharias’ story has gone like this so far: 1) First he lied about his credentials, claiming he had an earned doctorate (nope, they were honorary) and that he’d taught at Oxford and Cambridge (nope, it was all a lie). 2) Then he (allegedly, but I believe Lori Anne Thompson) got into sexting with a married woman, threatened to commit suicide and then browbeat Thompson and her husband into a “settlement” with an NDA that Zacharias proceeded to almost immediately violate. Now that Zacharias is dead, I’ve been asking Ravi Zacharias International Ministries to release the Thompsons from the NDA. 2b) Somewhere in all this mess there’s the story about how Zacharias talked his brother’s girlfriend into getting an abortion back in the 1970s….

3) A few weeks ago, an attorney in San Francisco named Steve Baughman revealed that not only did Zacharias own a couple of day spas with massage therapy, but that he had inappropriately touched massage therapists. Baughman hinted that Zacharias may have masturbated in front of the therapists. Some Evangelicals were upset, not so much about the day spas or the alleged masturbation, but because the spas had “ayurvedic” (Hindu) treatments on offer.

Which brings us up to today. Christianity Today, the house organ of Evangelical Protestantism, published a story following up on what Steve Baughman had alleged earlier this month. And it’s a doozy.

Three women who worked at the businesses, located in a strip mall in the Atlanta suburbs, told Christianity Today that Ravi Zacharias touched them inappropriately, exposed himself, and masturbated during regular treatments over a period of about five years. His business partner said he regrets not stopping Zacharias and sent an apology text to one of the victims this month.

RZIM denies the claims, saying in a statement to CT that the charges of sexual misconduct “do not in any way comport with the man we knew for decades.” The organization has hired a law firm “with experience investigating such matters” to look into the allegations, which date back at least 10 years. RZIM declined to answer any further questions about the inquiry.

christianitytoday.com

There are a lot more details in the article, and of course people are losing their shit at CT for going after one of their idols. Look, they’d been warned for *years* that Zacharias was puffing up his credentials and they still followed after him. (It is absolutely no wonder that these same people follow Donald Trump.) Even before his death in May, people like me had been warning that Ravi Zacharias was not the kind of guy one should trust. My favorite statement on the subject is, “If he’s going to lie about his academic credentials, then why on earth should I believe him when he says he knows the way to God? That’s right, I shouldn’t.” The same goes for lying about the age of the earth, provable facts about candidates for public office, etc.

This last is something that Anymouse should push over to his buddies at Utah Outcasts.

Another couple of positive takeaways from tonight’s crapfest (IMO anyway): Trump just torpedoed his own “October Surprises” by mendaciously running his yap: he scuttled any credibility his “Spygate” shit might even vaguely have had (and there apparently won’t be any “Durham Report” before the election) by whining about “campaign spying” in the middle of a string of lies (as usual). And his gibbering about Hunter Biden and his “billions from China” can only serve to (further) discredit whatever Ukrainian/“corruption” garbage they may have been planning to dump - as if having Rudy Giuliani managing the op wasn’t “discredit” enough.

I’ll toss that Christianity Today article at them and see if they do something with it.

Zacharias has always been a disingenuous sleeze, and his apologetics arguments were the same tired debunked crap from ages past.

Part of why apologetics works is because a person hears the claim for the first time (for examples, five hundred witnesses saw Jesus after he died, or atheists are immoral and there is an objective moral standard imposed from outside) and to them it sounds new and ingenuous. They’re not.

Like Dennis Prager, all he did was repackage the same tired debunked arguments in a different way.

What I saw tonight was Wallace made a token effort to try to keep Trump under control. More than once he admonished Trump for the first interruption of Biden’s response, and then would let further interruptions go on. And when it came to the “Law & Order” section, what Biden got were not questions but editorialized comments with a “?” tacked at the end.

Right now, the only thing at the Omaha World-Herald on the debate is going to be the top headline in the morning:

Trump takes credit for return of Big Ten football in first presidential debate

At my regional paper, the Scottsbluff Star-Herald has this article up for the top article:

Study proposed for COVID impact on childcare

It’s easy to assume COVID-19 — and subsequent economic contractions — have affected Nebraska’s early education system, early childcare system and all those that work within it. But questions of how bad they were affected and what can be done about it go unanswered.

Now, a study aimed at answering these questions and others regarding the fiscal impact of COVID-19 on childcare in Nebraska is in the works at the Nebraska State Legislature.

State Sen. John Stinner, of Gering [seat of Scott’s Bluff County], proposed the study in July and plans to hold a hearing on Tuesday at 8 a.m. MST that will be live-streamed on NET Nebraska.

The study includes examinations of the fiscal and economic impact of the pandemic on the early childhood workforce and the early childhood care and education system. It also includes examining the current federal and state investments and expenditures in Nebraska’s early childhood care and education system. It also will look at the funding gap between current investments and what would be needed for a “high-quality early childhood care and education system,” as written in the resolution proposing the study.

DENVER (AP) — A man who left a homemade bomb outside a police station in a Colorado mountain town could spend less time in prison under a U.S. appeals court decision in the case.

David Ansberry was sentenced last year to 27 years in prison for leaving the device, which did not explode, outside the Nederland police station in 2016. He pleaded guilty to attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction against a person or property.

His sentence was lengthened because a judge found that his actions were an act of terrorism and that the police officer who picked up the bag that contained the bomb was also a victim of the crime.

In a 2-1 ruling Wednesday, a three-judge panel of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals threw out the two findings by the judge that had lengthened the sentence and ordered a lower court to re-sentence Ansberry.

U.S. District Judge Christine Arguello determined that Ansberry was seeking revenge for the town marshal’s killing of a fellow member of a band of hippies in 1971 after arresting him. However, the appeals court panel said a terrorism sentencing enhancement can only be given if the crime is determined to be in response to what is actually official government conduct.

Joe went into tonight just needing to look “presidential.” In this case, that meant looking like the adult, keeping a command of his faculties, and avoiding any actions or responses that would turn into a meme tomorrow. He not only did that, but he also got in several quips that will be repeated after tonight. And the one time he showed any anger at Trump’s antics, it was in defense of his own children. Even when Donny spoke up about his kids, it was to whine about “how much they gave up” to work for his administration.

By contrast, Donny went into tonight as the underdog. He needed to provoke Joe into having a “gaffe” moment and he needed to look “good” by comparison. Instead, he chased off the audience in the first 10 minutes by being a smarmy prick and he never recovered from there. His performance tonight did little but remind millions of Americans of that abusive asshole in their lives that they did everything they could to avoid. The only way that the pundit can find to defend him is just to pull the BSAB card, and that doesn’t help him in the slightest.

Trump needed to come out of tonight looking like he belongs in the White House. Instead, he leaves the stage looking like someone who needs his meds and a nap.

Personal guess? He’ll demand a live audience, with some lip-service paid to public health concerns by agreeing that they be required to wear masks. The man totally lacked his pressure relief valve in the form of an audience that could cheer him and boo Biden/Wallace. And it shows in how he just kept getting angrier every time his efforts to bully Joe into silence failed.

Basically, Trump needed a first round knock-out tonight. This was supposed to be his last, big chance to change the momentum of the race. He and his underlings have spent weeks building up tonight as the night when the country sees that Joe can’t stand at the podium and give coherent answers because he’s a senile invalid. What Donny needed was to step up the podium and lay out Joe with the first punch.

Instead, it’s going to end up going to the judges. And that’s the very last thing he could afford because the judges have already made up their minds.

It occurred to me when listening to the exchange that when Trump said “stand back and stand by” it was because he forgot the term Wallace used. Wallace said “stand down” and Trump only recalled the “stand” part and improvised by trying two variations on “stand”.

Emily’s attempt to rewrite the bleedin’ obvious is why I said Trump couldn’t afford to let this go to the judges. People who actually watched the exchange know what happened, and the people who didn’t are likely going to believe what they want to believe. The man could have come out and clearly said “I condemn violence from white supremacists and militia groups,” but he never did. He just said he was “willing,” and then started babbling about Antifa and BLM.

I’m not content with Adolf Twitter getting his ass kicked Goldwater style.

I want his ass kicked 1936 Alf Landon style winning only 2 states…

One irony of that, and a measure of how far the GOP has fallen, is that Landon was an incomparably better candidate, and human being, than Cheeto. He was the longest-lived major party candidate, living on till 1987 and age 100 (51 years after his landslide defeat).

After the communist revolution in China, he was one of the first to advocate recognition of Mao Zedong’s communist government, and its admission to the United Nations, when this was still a very unpopular position among the leadership and followers of both major parties.

Imagine a Republican today having positions remotely like these:

In 1961, Landon urged the U.S. to join the European Common Market. In November 1962, when he was asked to describe his political philosophy, Landon said: “I would say practical progressive, which means that the Republican party or any political party has got to recognize the problems of a growing and complex industrial civilization. And I don’t think the Republican party is really wide awake to that.” Later in the 1960s, Landon backed President Lyndon Johnson on Medicare and other Great Society programs.

And Trump had nothing to do with it; it was our state attorney general taking over a private lawsuit and making it a state case that the Big Ten was violating its non-profit state charter in Nebraska. The GOP here was seeking to strip the Big Ten of its non-profit status, and the Big Ten caved.

A Marine who fled Camp Lejeune was one of four service members who police this week said were part of an armed robbery at a Catholic church in a beach town near the North Carolina base.

Lance Cpl. Shawn M. Miller, a field artillery cannoneer with 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, fled Thursday as authorities took the other three suspects in the August robbery into custody.

The 2nd Marine Division reported Miller “at large” in a statement published Friday evening, about 24 hours after he was seen in Jacksonville, N.C., nearby the base.

He was taken into custody a couple of hours later in Richlands, about 20 miles northwest of Camp Lejeune, and was booked into the county jail on an armed robbery charge, the division said Friday.

There a handful of things in STV that can be salvaged out of that mess and the rest flushed.

The existence of a failed Peace Planet in the Neutral Zone that has turned into Terra 11 from Spacehunter, or Pandora from Borderlands.

A renegade Vulcan leading a cult rejecting logic-only in favor of emotions. (But not him being a blood relative of Spock.)

The line “What does God need with a Starship?” is worthy of reuse somewhere in the franchise.

All these ideas could be reused or canonized in Trek lore somehow. The rest…. CRAP.

Trust me, entire reams of text has been dedicated by the EU authors to either explain away the more egregious canon bullshit or at least make it fit somewhere in the overall Trek canon. But it really says something when even Gene basically had to throw up his hands and declare it “apocryphal.” It’s pretty much the only film in the entire franchise where the people responsible have tried to write it out of existence.

Both siderism from Navy Times on the debate.

Candidates accuse each other of military insults, disrespect for troops in first presidential debate

In a debate marked by frequent name calling and angry exchanges, the two major party presidential candidates accused each other of demeaning the military and hurting national security, while insisting that they have the best interest of troops at heart.

The event — the first face-to-face showdown between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden — largely focused on domestic priorities and concerns about the validity of the upcoming election, just 35 days away.

But both candidates made several references to military and veterans issues, including news reports earlier this month quoting anonymous administration officials charging Trump with referring to fallen U.S. troops buried in France as “losers” and “suckers,” and questioning why any American would join the armed forces.

In response to questions from MOAA, the president vowed to continue his military rebuild while the former vice president pushed for more restrained defense spending.
Leo Shane III

Biden lashed out at the president for the alleged remarks, calling it disrespectful and disgusting.

“The way you talk about the military, you talk about them being losers and suckers,” he said. “My son (Beau) was in Iraq. He spent a year there … He was not a loser. He was a patriot. And the people left behind, they were heroes.”

Trump has denied the charges and countered that Biden made worse remarks in the past, calling troops “stupid bastards” during a visit the United Arab Emirates in 2016. Biden officials have said the remark was made as part of an aside joke, to troops who failed to applaud a fellow service member.

I was only able to mostly get rid of and work around two of the four items on your checklist (eliminating the turboshaft sequence in its entirety eliminates the deck signage that gives the Enterprise at least 78 decks) and most of the ill-judged comedy and keep it coherent, unfortunately.

It wasn’t wise for Biden to go as far as calling Trump a “clown”, given he is selling himself as a more mature and presidential alternative. But he also needed to show that he wasn’t going to be pushed around.

Given Biden’s strong lead in the polls, it was Trump who most needed to emerge with a thumping debate victory. He didn’t achieve that. This was not a performance that will shift the dynamics of the presidential contest in his favour.

Cry, the beloved country. Donald Trump ensured Tuesday’s first US presidential debate was the worst in American history, a national humiliation. The rest of the world - and future historians - will presumably look at it and weep.

More likely than not, according to opinion polls, his opponent Joe Biden will win the November election and bring the republic back from the brink. If Trump is re-elected, however, this dark, horrifying, unwatchable fever dream will surely be the first line of America’s obituary.

Only one man looked remotely presidential on the debate stage in Cleveland, Ohio, and it was not the incumbent. He interrupted, ranted, raged, spewed lies and interrupted some more. Oh, and he passed on an opportunity to condemn white supremacists, instead telling them to “stand back and stand by”.

The debate moderator, Chris Wallace of Fox News, did not cover himself in glory either. He was a like a school supply teacher, hopelessly out of his depth as unruly children run riot. He did not enforce the rules or cut the president’s mic.

Facing this asymmetric bullying, Biden showed self-control and stood his ground. He spoke for tens of millions of Americans when he demanded: “Will you shut up, man?” - the Biden campaign rushed out this slogan on a T-shirt before the debate was even over.

Masks were optional inside the council chambers because people in attendance are considered to be seeking government services. [Gov. Ricketts’s order prohibiting government entities from requiring masks remains in effect statewide.]

Opponents questioned the seriousness of the virus, the effectiveness of masks, the effect on children and the council’s legal and constitutional authority. They accused the council of hurting the economy and used terms like evil, partial suffocation, propaganda and psychological warfare.

Kelly Jensen, founder of a group called No Mask Omaha, said he represented 3,400 people in Omaha who are sick of the mandate. “I’m furious,” Jensen said.

“I ask you to end this,” he said. “This is getting bad. You’re affecting businesses.”

Covidiots don’t care what the health department notes:

Since the council passed the mandate Aug. 11, public health officials have credited mask usage with helping limit spread of the novel coronavirus. Earlier this month, Douglas County saw its positivity rate on COVID-19 tests drop to 7.3% for one week.

Tuesday, Douglas County Health Director Adi Pour cited positive trends: new cases and the positivity rate were down last week compared to the week that the mandate started, as the number of tests rose.

Republicans keeping it kkklassy in state races in Nebraska. Both candidates in the Legislative District 1 race are Republicans (I’m not sure how that happened).

LINCOLN — An already fiery legislative race took on more heat Monday as State Sen. Julie Slama of Peru reported to the Nebraska State Patrol that she had been threatened by a man she said was a “surrogate” of her opponent’s campaign.

Slama, who was appointed to the District 1 seat in the Legislature two years ago, reported that Randy Denniston had emailed a string of disparaging and insulting slurs to her early Sunday morning, including saying that her mother should have aborted her.

Denniston, when reached by The World-Herald, said he regretted his remarks and apologized to both Slama and her opponent, Janet Palmtag, whom he is supporting. He said that he did not threaten the senator but that he used language he shouldn’t have.

“I let my emotions and weaknesses get the best of me the other night,” said Denniston, a retired Nebraska City accountant. “I’m just angry about (Slama’s) tactics that started this campaign of negativity.”

no need to guess who the 5 are:

Matt Gaetz (Fla.), Louie Gohmert (Texas), Clay Higgins (La.), Steve King (Iowa) and Thomas Massie (Ky.).

Well, Steve King (R-acist, IA-4) won’t be returning to Congress after he lost his primary to an equally awful racist who is better at keeping his statements to approved dog whistles.

It remains to be seen whether IA-4 can be flipped to Democratic control. JD Scholten is the Democratic challenger. If he wins the race, all four Iowa House seats will be under Democratic representatives.

The UK sees Australia’s refugee programme and raises them. Out of sight, out of mind. Plus in the tradition of conservatism, wildly expensive.

Ascension Island: Priti Patel considered outpost for UK asylum centre location (BBC)

The government has considered building an asylum processing centre on a remote UK territory in the Atlantic Ocean.

The idea of “offshoring” people is being looked at but finding a suitable location would be key, a source said.

Home Secretary Priti Patel asked officials to look at asylum policies which had been successful in other countries, the BBC has been told.

The Financial Times says Ascension Island, more than 4,000 miles (6,000km) from the UK, was a suggested location.

The Foreign Office is understood to have carried out an assessment for Ascension - which included the practicalities of transferring migrants thousands of miles to the island - and decided not to proceed.

However, a Home Office source said ministers were looking at “every option that can stop small boat crossings and fix the asylum system”.

“The UK has a long and proud history of offering refuge to those who need protection. Tens of thousands of people have rebuilt their lives in the UK and we will continue to provide safe and legal routes in the future.

BBC analysis of the disaster disguised as a presidential debate.

In a debate that was the political equivalent of a food fight, the winner was the man who emerged least covered in slop.

On Tuesday night, that man was Joe Biden - if only because his main goal was to prove to Americans that he could hold up under pressure, that he had not lost a step due to his advancing age. He had to show he could take a pie to the face, metaphorically speaking, and keep his cool.

He mostly met that standard, although it was at least in part because Donald Trump, by his constant hectoring and interruptions, seldom gave the former vice-president a chance to say something truly damaging to his own cause.

Twitter Trump - the unconventional, bombastic, insulting and rumour-mongering aspect of this president - was on full display throughout the hour-and-a-half event. Unfortunately for the president, many Americans, even his own supporters, find his social media persona one of his more unattractive attributes.

Trump needed this debate to shake up a race that is tilting against him - and which has been remarkably stable, through economic, health and social adversity.

Nothing about this free-for-all seems likely to alter the dynamics of this contest or change the minds of the one in 10 American voters who say they are still undecided (although perhaps they’ll resolve never to watch another one of these).

This was maybe the worst presidential debate in American history.

If this was supposed to be a boxing match, it instead turned into Trump jumping on the ropes, refusing to come down, the referee trying to coax him off and Biden standing in the middle of the ring with his gloves on and a confused look on his face.

Trump doesn’t play by anyone’s rules, even those he’s agreed to beforehand. He’s prided himself on that. But even by his standards, what Trump did Tuesday night crossed many lines.

He’s president. More than 200,000 Americans are dead from the coronavirus pandemic. And instead of a serious debate about the direction of the country, Trump sent it off the rails.

i weep that 40+% of the country think this is a good thing.
the way a president should behave.
and that’s before discussing that there’s no presidential substance behind it, no ‘there’, there.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

I couldn’t bring myself to watch the shitshow last night, but others did, and I’ve seen the clips.

This sums it up for me.

Trump is a fucking white nationalist and he refuses to condemn right wing domestic terrorists and white supremacists because he’s one of them. He’s a saboteur whose policies have failed to keep the nation safe and emboldened our enemies. We are worse off for it, and 210,000+ Americans can’t be reached for comment because they’re dead from Trump’s failed covid19 response.

Trump is a shit slinging racist motherfucker, but the usual suspects will go after Biden because he didn’t show Trump respect? Fuck that. Trump disrespects the office daily. He shreds the Constitution and his oath of office while enriching himself on taxpayer dime while millions are out of work and are unable to get jobs because of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing shitshow known as Brexit…..

Trade will be a “day-to day struggle” after Brexit is completed, MPs have been told, in a bleak forecast from the key aerospace, chemicals and pharmaceuticals industries.

The inquiry heard of massive extra costs, a mountain of red tape, shrinking investment and chemicals “disappearing” from the UK market, from January.

Some medicines may not reach Northern Ireland - if, as feared, extra tests will be required - although it was “very important that patients don’t panic”, it was told.

‘Those facilities [for testing] don’t exist, so it’s not clear how it will happen,” warned Richard Torbett, chief executive of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry.

Neil Hollis, of the chemical giant BASF, highlighted £1bn of new registration costs, a loss of innovation and some chemicals no longer being available, adding: “There’s no positive spin on this.”

The Brits can’t get rid of Brexit - well, they could re-join the European Union, but honestly I don’t see that happening for about 20 years or so. Maybe a little sooner if things get really bad and the UK ends up in either “failed state” or “developing nation” territory.

President Trump claimed during last night’s debate that he secured the endorsement of the “Portland sheriff” — presumably a reference to Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese, the Oregonian reports.

However, Reese tweeted that was false: “In tonight’s presidential debate the President said the ‘Portland Sheriff’ supports him. As the Multnomah County Sheriff I have never supported Donald Trump and will never support him.”

Oddly, we don’t do the same with Japanese names. For instance, the renowned animator Miyazaki Hayao is invariably written (in English) as “Hayao Miyazaki”. Weird.

That is an English convention done with all Japanese names. So for example, the former prime minister, who is Abe Shinzo in Japanese, is Shinzo Abe in English.

Along the same lines, one thing I’ve learned about Japanese is the relative rarity of calling someone “you” directly. Japanese textbooks push “anata” (you) on students, but I’ve learned from watching videos by native Japanese speakers and reading articles that “anata” should be avoided. Instead of saying “anata”, when addressing you, I would say, “Dr Lizardo-san”.

Another thing. “O genki desu” does mean “how are you doing?” but it’s a rare thing, and not used anywhere near as frequently as “how are you doing?” in English.

Former ISIS fighters have been dispatched to fight in a European showdown between Turkish and Russian proxies.

The Hamza and Sultan Murad brigades are known within Syrian rebel circles as factions that enjoy especially close relations with Turkey, the last remaining patron of the Syrian opposition. Sayf Balud, commander of the Hamza brigades, however, is also known for his checkered past, in particular, as a former commander within the radical jihadist group ISIS.

There are actually multiple countries/cultures where (traditionally at least) the family name/surname (what we usually call a last name) comes first and the given name (what we usually call a first name) comes last.

This is sometimes used with fictional cultures too. For example, the Bajorans on Star Trek use this kind of naming custom.

For the Chinese transliteration system, in the 19th c. missionaries came up with the old one where Zedong is written Tsetung. I think their first point of contact was in the Guangzhou area where Cantonese is prevalent, but they may have heard things differently. At any rate, that’s how we get “The Tao of Pooh” even though “Tao” is and was pronounced Dao. And if you wanted to get a word pronounced tao, you had to write it as t’ao. So the communist party had its linguists come up with a new system called Pinyin that has been in use since the 1950s, I think. The old system is still in use in Taiwan for what should be obvious reasons.

eta: the old system is called Wade-Giles

This is exactly the giant glacier of racial reconciliation. I see racism as 50 shades: white nationalists and murderous KKK are only a few shades. The ‘soft’ racism of indifference or ignorance is much less horrible on a granular level but much more oppressive on the macro scale. I refer all to King”s Letters From a Birmingham Jail and his lamentations of the white moderate.

I see this all the time. I suspect many white folks inherently know this and to acknowledge racism is to admit to being in those shades of indifrerence and ignorance for so long.

Proposed rule for the next debate- Only one mans microphone on live air at a time. And just record the rest for the cacophony track or later review. Let the moderator have a kill switch. And a stronger personality, and wit. Something like that.

Not that anyone should care, but I’m not sitting still for a show like that again. I don’t even know a single undecided voter. My election time is probably better spent taking in the information on the local and state ballot issues to vote those well.

Better rule—If Trump interrupts again, start the music!

Even Frank Luntz was a bit “taken aback” by Trump’s behavior. You and I both know those family members are lost by choice. Hating liberals trumps (literally) all else. Even policy and programs that would benefit them personally.

I totally understand the frustration and anger. I have no family or real life, in person friends anymore because of this fucking garbage. Sometimes that anger gets the better of me, but I’ll be damned if I will let the bastards win. Fuck that.

Meanwhile, Trumpworld is trying to build as many miles of wall on the border as possible - damaging critical and sensitive habitats, all while inflating the risks posed by not doing a border wall.

The reality is that border crossings are a small portion of the broken immigration system. Trump’s refusing to deal with the big issue - the slow pace of naturalization and visa overstays. You need more actual immigration judges to do that, and for all of his efforts, he’s done nothing to make the system more efficient. He’s just going for the cruelty and pain on those seeking to come to the nation.

Oh, and immigrants pay more taxes to the US than Trump.
Undocumented workers pay more taxes to the US than Trump.

Trump’s the deadbeat and criminal. He’s the slacker out on the golf course profiting from every round of golf he plays while he continued employing undocumented workers at his businesses even as President.

Apropos of little, I’m going to go out on limb here (admittedly, not a very long one), and fearlessly predict that Trump will indeed show up for the second Presidential debate - AND: that it very well may NOT be as much of an utter shitshow as the first - or at least attempts will be made to frantically spin it as such.
Reasons:
1. If, as I have read, the next debate will be focused on foreign policy, it will be a last desperate opportunity for the Orange Anus to reverse his awful polling numbers. Foreign policy (broadly defined) is the sole area where Trump’s approval ratings aren’t (or only minimally) underwater, for him to forego the chance to at least TRY to boost his popularity is, IMO, basically ceding the election*. Which he ain’t gonna do.

2. A foreign-policy debate will give the Asshole-in-Chief a chance to structure his rants on a framework of Righteous America vs. Evil Foreigners (except for Israel, of course: they get a permanent Righteousness Pass) - and try to tar Joe Biden and the Democrats for “standing up for Those Evil Foreigners” with every policy difference**.

3. Disgustingly, this will likely play right into the “mainstream” media narrative: they want to have their “horserace”, and the debate schedule with it’s carefully crafted winner/loser shtick is perfect. Barring another meltdown (always possible though), they are probably already drafting the headlines of “Trump roars back with spirited foreign-policy takedown of Dems”, so as to set up the “rubber match” of a third debate. Which, BTW, I am NOT sure will occur.

Although things are looking up, we’re still a long way from “done”.

* For Trump, meaning seriously looking into ways to nullify the result.

** IOW “Israel Good, Iran Bad; China Bad, Europe Bad Rip-off Socialists, NATO Rip-Off, Israel Good, No Open Borders, Greatest Peace Plan in History, China Paying Tariffs - and did I mention Israel?”

All quite true, but also - in a foreign-policy-focused debate - utterly irrelevant. Trump’s usual FP routine is heavily reliant on loud, blaring, spread-eagle jingoism founded on a simple-minded “Us vs. Them” narrative, with Extra Added Israel to keep the Jump-For-Jesus crowd engaged. Of course Biden has extensive FP experience: Trump will likely use that (or, more accurately, be persuaded to use that) as one of the main points of attack. Since his experience was as VP under the Disloyal Kenyan Muslim Sellout Incompetent…. (extra drinking shot if “Benghazi” mentioned)

Maybe this is not an overriding attitude is ALL of the “working class”, but it does exist, it exists in a non-trivial percentage of the “blue-collar” demographic, and as a factor in national politics, dates back at least to Andrew Jackson’s time.
As long as the rudeness and hatefulness conforms to the “proper” prejudices, there will only occasionally be downsides to expressing it in political discourses. Exhibit A: President Donald Trump….
