In unrelated news, we got ourselves a battery “power station” for backup power.
We went for the Jackery Explorer 1000 and a pair of portable solar panels. The 1000 watt battery powers either the refrigerator or chest freezer for 7 or 8 hours. We had been a bit unsure if the 1000 watts would be enough because of the start-up surge, but apparently it produces a 2000 watt surge so it works great.
Good choice! Iirc Wirecutter likes the Jackery. As do a number of the current Youtube reviewers.
Nice things about battery power include:
- Not having to set it up and run it outside
- Not annoying your neighbors with the noise
- Not worrying about someone stealing it from your backyard

We are dealing with an unprecedented situation.

Nice things about battery power include:
- Not having to set it up and run it outside
- Not annoying your neighbors with the noise
- Not worrying about someone stealing it from your backyard

I have no idea but what’s happening in the former Warsaw Pact bloc worries me. Poland has always been conservative owing to its heavy Catholic tradition but the rise in outright hostility to lgbt people as people scares me. Meanwhile Ireland whose Catholic tradition is just as strong has not only legalized SSM but their previous Taoiseach was openly gay. The different paths of both countries the last ten years fascinate me.

This is 100% purely anecdotal. I’ve lived in my neighborhood of Ostrava South for seven years now. There’s a lot of retirees here in my neck of the woods; I’d say the majority of the residents in my apartment block are in the 65+ crowd.
Used to be that I’d hear or see an ambulance in my immediate neighborhood maybe once a month or so. Now….I’m seeing ambulances once or twice a day, all racing to the apartment blocks that surround mine.
I take the bus for food shopping. The grocery is on a busy road between two cities, and the local hospital is at one end of the route. I’m often watching traffic while waiting for my bus.
I counted ambulances. During the worst times (where I was, and still am, masked) I would constantly hear sirens. At home, I would hear sirens, because I’m in an apartment as well.
It’s quiet where I am, right now. Hope it doesn’t get worse for either of us.

Our state governor ordered all hospitals to reserve 20% of ICU beds for non-Covid reasons like heart attacks or automobile wrecks.

Locally in the Panhandle, ICU bed availability is at 35%, as we surge further into the “high risk of transmission” category.
This “20% ICU beds reserved for non-Covid cases” causes other problems. My county hospital has one ICU bed. The same goes for most of the county hospitals here.
Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff is the largest hospital, but Scott’s Bluff County has the overwhelming majority of active cases. Moreover, if the county hospitals can’t handle the surge, that’s where they go.
Sidney Regional Medical Center (really a large county hospital) has morgue trucks set up outside.

That really isn’t likely though since many of the cardinals that will choose Francis’s successor will have been appointed by him. Plus I think they know that the ultra socially conservative stuff really alienates people.
The first case in the Panhandle was April 1. The rise in cases was pretty slow thanks to the quarantine here until it was overrun by the state governor.
In the last five days we’ve risen from 1,315 to 1,468 cases. 33% of our cases have been in October.

Yep. Outside of public plans, there are few traditional pension plans out there. Most of us rely on our 401(k)s and Social Security to finance our retirement. So Purdue Pharma is paying a 8 billion dollar fine for their crimes — but no one is going to prison and much of their wealth may have been moved offshore. This is so infuriating. The Minnesota weather records are June 4 for latest snow, and September 14 for earliest. I don’t know what the official snow season is here, but it’s probably not far off from yours.
UNL lists Sept. through May because that’s when they’ve reported snow in Lincoln over the years.
It is significantly colder here, but I can’t find any statistics for Scottsbluff/Alliance/Chadron.
A couple years ago I was scheduled for hand surgery at the Cheyenne VA on June 1. The NWS scheduled us for a blizzard, so my wife and I went a couple days early and stayed.
I showed up at the hospital for my surgery and was told the surgeon couldn’t make it because he was snowed in so it was cancelled. “Aw hell no, he lives in town and drives a Ford F-250. If I could get here in a Smart, he can get here in his monster truck.”
My surgery was delayed a few hours, but it did happen.

I am interested to see how the balance of power shifts within the state. Minnesota’s politicians have been rather active on the coronavirus denial front, and despite holding our own on keeping infection rates in check, COVID fatigue is high within the state. I’m hoping that science and reason prevail, but I’m honestly nervous.

It’s only the first day and it’s still early. I wish our damned media would stop trying to discourage people with their constant polling and estimated turnout and all that. There may be more republicans voting in person, today. But the early ballot totals haven’t been added in yet and there’s still 13 days left. And Florida does lean conservative, I wonder how the down ticket races are looking, those mean a lot too. Don’t give up hope, it can be hard I know, but all we can do is give people good info, help them navigate the system and get their asses to the polls if we can.

So Purdue Pharma is paying a 8 billion dollar fine for their crimes — but no one is going to prison and much of their wealth may have been moved offshore. This is so infuriating. Many of the poor get thrown in jail for drug use and lose their right to vote while those actually responsible for the damage to our society get off essentially scot-free and retain much of their ill-gotten gains.

Our RW Texas brother and his wife voted early too and it’s 100% certain how they voted. Florida would be having different results if the Republican legislature hadn’t instituted a poll tax to bar released felons from getting their voting rights restored. That scene took two days to film, because on the first day someone brought a bottle of Southern Comfort to the set, and Andy was taking nips between takes. By the end of the day, he was so hammered that the director sent him home.
Andy Griffith was a lot better actor than a lot of critics would give him credit for - though it was hard to get past the aw-shucks-country-boy shtick he loved to milk for ratings.
Though he did like his tipple, though: I recall when I was a teenager, I sat a row in front of Andy at some performance at the LA Music Center.
