Another one bites the dust:

CPS inquiry at center of Lubbock Christian School president’s departure

An internal email sent out to parents of Lubbock Christian School shows an off-campus, non-school-related investigation by Child Protective Services led to the immediate departure of the school’s president.

An email from LCS administration sent Sunday informed parents that President Tye Rogers was no longer affiliated with the school.

Lubbock Christian now says it was because of something that happened off-campus and was not school-sponsored. The campus-wide email did not give specific details about the CPS investigation other than it was “ongoing”

Yes. Indeed.

Perhaps vindictiveness and revenge are not warranted, but there is a need for a righteous anger to underlie our actions, to make apparent to others, to show the deep wounding that they have done.

Depends on the market. The cost of grandmothers fluctuates wildly, but goes up towards the holidays.

Charles Johnson  Nov 24, 2020 • 5:42:12pm

Only way that config file should have been visible on the internet is if their server wasn’t properly set up to serve PHP files at some point.

That actually happened to LGF once, back in the Jurassic Era, when our web host upgraded PHP and MySQL and forgot to configure Apache for PHP files. All the code for the site was exposed for a few short minutes. I remember sending a panicked email to them about it.

But not any passwords. Those were always stored outside the web root. It’s a real flaw in Wordpress that they locate a file with critical passwords in a web-accessible directory.

re: #24 Belafon

Liberals/ Biden voters generally desire a nation where everyone treats more or less everyone else as equals and we can advance forward using the continuous evolution of a mixed economy.

The Trump/Fox News/OANN/Qnut side wants to either send most of the country away somewhere far away or simply lined up against a wall and shot. They then want to use all manner of criminality to do away with Constitutional protections and install their fascist republic that rewards billionaires who demonstrate the most cruelty.

There is a slight difference between the two ideologies that no “conciliation” or “Pardoning Trump” and his sycophants can bridge.

My dad and I were talking about the polio vaccine earlier, and I went to the Wikipedia page about it. This section talks about the problems with one company’s version of the Salk vaccine, which was supposed to be based on an inactive version of the virus:

In April 1955, soon after mass polio vaccination began in the US, the Surgeon General began to receive reports of patients who contracted paralytic polio about a week after being vaccinated with Salk polio vaccine from Cutter pharmaceutical company, with the paralysis limited to the limb the vaccine was injected into. The Cutter vaccine had been used in vaccinating 200,000 children in the western and midwestern United States.[76] Later investigations showed that the Cutter vaccine had caused 40,000 cases of polio, killing 10.[76] In response the Surgeon General pulled all polio vaccine made by Cutter Laboratories from the market, but not before 250 cases of paralytic illness had occurred. Wyeth polio vaccine was also reported to have paralyzed and killed several children. It was soon discovered that some lots of Salk polio vaccine made by Cutter and Wyeth had not been properly inactivated, allowing live poliovirus into more than 100,000 doses of vaccine. In May 1955, the National Institutes of Health and Public Health Services established a Technical Committee on Poliomyelitis Vaccine to test and review all polio vaccine lots and advise the Public Health Service as to which lots should be released for public use. These incidents reduced public confidence in polio vaccine, leading to a drop in vaccination rates.[77

Nebraska still remains the only state in the Union which hasn’t accepted expanded SNAP benefits for the pandemic, due to billionaire Pete Ricketts not believing anyone else should get help because why should he care? Bear in mind, that’s with the whole Panhandle at “severe risk.”

Folks saying they will have outside guests in that New York Times article doesn’t break it down with “local guests” (who I presume are at the same risk if they are not my wife and me staying holed up at home) or “out of area” guests (who will take it back with them to low-risk areas).

Another reason not to have guests no matter where you are. You don’t know if someone came to an area like mine unless they tell you, or were exposed to someone who did come here and didn’t know.

As noted here before:

Anyone can get it.
Anyone can recover from it.
Anyone can die from it.

Rationalisations about why “my Thanksgiving dinner is different” or “no one in my pod” (an idea originally floated by libertarians so it is bad by default) would bring it in, is not worth spending time on a ventilator over Christmas.

Actually, we call them bubbles in California, the group of no more than (I think) 12 people who socialize together, and the idea was developed by the health department — not a group of libertarians by any means. Being in the same bubble doesn’t mean eating together, however, which, as we know, is about the most dangerous thing you can do.

Someone calculated the number of people in their bubble, and what started off as like 4 people wound up being like 50. Unless you’re like me who goes to the grocery store once every two weeks, my hubby has two employees and encounters other people at work, and the only other person we deal with is my MIL to whom shopping is an addiction and her eldest caters to her every whim and enables her. Also, he goes shopping a lot.

So what’s my bubble? Me (1), hubby (3) and MIL (Who knows).

So hubby’s bubble is 2. Each of them has a spouse (his bubble is now 4). One has a part time child, so that’s 5. That child is in school. The bubble is exponential. Oh and the other spouse works, too.

Bubbles are bullshit if you don’t know every single person’s every move.

My county now has 86 active cases.

The cumulative positivity rate is 21.5%, the weekly positivity rate is 42.8% (that’s down again).

I suspect that all the travel predicted for Thanksgiving to this area is going to end my town’s streak of no cases. It will be brought in from outside by people who just have to go to a Thanksgiving dinner with family or friends, and they will wind up killing people here because they don’t care; Thanksgiving is about them, not society.

Every business from here to Oshkosh has closed in an effort to keep tourists from spreading disease to our area. This will probably fail, but it’s the best we can do with no state help.

One thing these graphs show us that the first wave of infections was massively under-evaluated — there must have been huge numbers of asymptomatic cases we didn’t see:

cases vs deaths France

We’ve probably got better at treating cases which will partly explain why the smaller first peak in cases has a larger death rate than the second, but I’m sure that the first wave was actually much bigger than we thought — it’s easier to miss a case of COVID-19 than a death.

The general store is closed here until next week. There is no gas station or restaurant open for a 130-mile stretch of US-26.

Considering how bad the outbreak is here, though, it’s more likely people will take Christmas presents home with them. Then they’ll spread it amongst their communities, even into groups who think they’re safe because they have to buy groceries or go to work as well.

Stalling, stalling, stalling, hopefully long enough for a sane president.

Air Force says no decision yet on fate of Offutt-based Open Skies jets (Omaha World-Herald)

Air Force officials at Offutt Air Force Base and in the Pentagon told The World-Herald that no move has been made to sell or scrap two Offutt-based jets tasked with flying photo reconnaissance missions under the international Open Skies Treaty.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo finalized U.S. withdrawal from the pact Sunday, six months after giving notice to the 33 other member nations, including Canada, Russia and most nations in Europe, of the planned pullout.

“United States withdrawal from the Treaty on Open Skies is now effective,” Pompeo said in a tweet.

The Trump administration proceeded with its plans although President-elect Joe Biden had said when he was running that the U.S. should remain in the treaty.

The Wall Street Journal — quoting an unnamed “senior U.S. official” — reported over the weekend that the Trump administration has moved to declare the two aging OC-135 aircraft that fly the mission as “excess defense articles” and will sell them or scrap them.

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow amplified those claims on her program Monday, citing the Journal’s reporting.

“The Trump administration has decided to destroy the airplanes that support the treaty,” she said. “They’re destroying the planes — and they’ve made sure there won’t be any new ones to replace them.”

But Ryan Hansen, a 55th Wing spokesman, said in a statement that the 55th Wing hasn’t been directed to dispose of the OC-135s.

“Nothing has changed,” he said. “The 45th Reconnaissance Squadron is still flying the planes, at a greatly reduced rate, as they have been doing for several months now.”

More on the mass shooting which occurred in the Omaha suburbs which got no national press due to the mass shooting in Wisconsin the day before.

The night before a gunman shot four Sonic Drive-In workers, killing two of them, the workers and three friends ate what turned out to be a last meal together at IHOP.

It was rare for the current and former Sonic employees to sit down to dinner after a shift, though most were friends, said LeAnn Jensen, 22, a former co-worker who ate with them that night.

“It was almost like we were saying goodbye, but we didn’t know it at the time,” Jensen said.

In the Saturday night shooting at the Sonic at 1307 Cornhusker Road in Bellevue, Nathan Pastrana, 22, and Ryan Helbert, 28, were killed and Zoey Lujan, 18, and Kenneth Gerner, 25, suffered critical injuries.

‘It was almost like we were saying goodbye’: Sonic workers ate together before shooting (Omaha World-Herald)

It was not a workplace shooting. The shooter used someone else’s cellphone with a Sonic app on it to order a bunch of food. The owner of the cell phone discovered the order and called the Sonic to tell them they did not place the order.

Sonic employees called the police before he got there; he set a U-haul on fire in the parking lot after he was refused the order, possibly to draw out employees to shoot at them.

More charges have been added. He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, one count of first-degree arson (the U-haul truck), identity theft, and one count of theft of less than $500.

That’s a very good question. I would answer “because they are Republicans.”

Why are all the NEGOP staffers white supremacists? (Goes to Seeing Red Nebraska, a liberal blog about Nebraska politics).

Yet more white supremacists outed in the Nebraska GOP, this time a staffer of Representative Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE1) and the vice-chair of the Nebraska Log Cabin Republicans.

Thanks for joining us for another episode of “How many Nazis does it take for the NEGOP to admit to their Nazi problem?”.

Just months after James Scurlock was murdered by white supremacist Jake Gardner and with Omaha’s Black community still reeling from the loss, another Black man, Kenny Jones, was needlessly and brutally murdered by the Omaha Police Department in front of his mother’s house. The community immediately sprung into action with protests in front of the Omaha Police Department demanding that OPD release their camera footage of the murder, which they have still refused to do. What they have released, though, in an attempt to control the narrative, are still photos from the body cam footage, including this horrific photo of Kenny Jones realizing he is about to be murdered by OPD.

If you are a person with a shred of empathy-in other words, not OPD-you would find that photo devastating. Yet in the midst of a community mourning this second loss at the hands of white supremacists this year and fighting literally for their lives, two agitators decided to show up and taunt Kenny Jones’s family. Those agitators? Congressman Jeff Fortenberry staffer Kelsey McDonald and Vice Chair of Nebraska Log Cabin Republicans Jacob M. McNeill.

Why are all the NEGOP staffers white supremacists? (Goes to Seeing Red Nebraska, a liberal blog about Nebraska politics).

Yet another white supremacist outed in the Nebraska GOP, this time a staffer of Representative Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE1) and the vice-chair of the Nebraska Log Cabin Republicans.

The media went with Trump not so much for his authoritarianism but because he was already a media star and a big ratings draw.

They allowed him to get away with things that would have sunk the campaign or even the career or any other politician.

They broadcast an empty podium waiting for him to make excuses about money he embezzled for charities while ignoring a speech Hillary was giving at the same time on better employment opportunities for the unemployed.

They both-sided his blatant flouting of the law and rationalized away his excesses.

In exchange, he offered them a 24/7 political reality TV series.

All of that is true, while at the same time Trump called them lügenpresse, penned them so they could be harassed and taunted by his supporters, physically attacked by his supporters, silently took his abuse at his press conferences, and came back for more. They will not use the word “lie.” They want access, not news.

When a rare reporter does push back (such as Jim Acosta), they strip their press pass from them and kick them out. They cower in fear of his next tweet.

Glad to see this asshat was fired. This was a regional outrage.

SIOUX FALLS | The head of one of the largest regional health systems in the Midwest was replaced Tuesday, less than a week after telling employees that he had recovered from COVID-19 and was not wearing a mask around the office.

Sanford Health said in a release that it has “mutually agreed to part ways” with longtime CEO Kelby Krabbenhoft, who took over in 1996 and helped expand the organization from a community hospital into what is billed as the largest rural nonprofit health system in the country.

Krabbenhoft left the executive position after telling employees in an email that he believes he’s now immune to COVID-19 for “at least seven months and perhaps years to come” and that he isn’t a threat to transmit it to anyone. He said wearing a mask would be merely for show. Other Sanford executives tried to distance themselves from the comments.

Dr. Kathy Anderson, president of the North Dakota Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, said it was “an especially dangerous message to be sending right now in North Dakota.”

Smartest move on the USAF’s part would be to strip as much equipment as they can when the order does come down, if only so they won’t have to start from scratch when the new admin comes in and rescinds those orders.

These planes are ancient, obsolete and really need to be scrapped. The Open Skies part of the international weapons inspection protocols was created back when satellite and other remote surveillance wasn’t anywhere as good as it is today. In comparison there are only two OS planes flown by the US. They spend a lot of time getting fixed up so they can make a few flights a year and they’re very visible when they do fly so it’s reasonably easy for anyone who has something to hide to throw a tarp over it, so to speak when the radar operators tell them.

A lot of weapons treaties, non-nuclear as well as nuclear allow for boots-on-the-ground inspections of specific sites and even the installation of permanent monitoring equipment reporting remotely. Open Skies as a concept is a good thing, it indicates trust between nations but it’s only part of a complicated series of interlocking protocols and one of the lesser parts at that.

Your moment of WTF as I get ready for the rack.

Female service member pairs $700 heels with dress blues, causing the internet to implode (Military Times)

It turns out Army uniform regulations state that men’s footware cannot have contrasting soles, but there is no such regulation for women’s footware.

Red heels are the mark of designer Christian Louboutin, whose shoes are a status symbol in the footwear world. But to the online military community, they could be anything from an act of rebellion against uniform regulations to a downright financially irresponsible purchase.

US Army WTF Moments shared an image of a female service member in dress blues sporting her likely hard-earned Louboutins, noting that they aren’t sexist for doing so. But the tweet ultimately drew backlash as a majority of the responses from military Twitter indicate support for a woman’s right to choose her own ($695) shoes.

Well, first you commission a working group to develop an Analysis of Alternatives for disposal options, which means that you will need to staff a memo to determine the Terms of Reference for the meeting, participating stakeholders, and a chairperson, which will need a couple of weeks for that staffing and the boss’s signature, and then about a month or so for the stakeholders to respond with comments and determine a good date for an initial meeting, but since it’s the holiday season we should give it two months, then a few weeks to develop an initial plan of action and then the actual meeting, which will approve the ToRs and an initial schedule and staff any comments on the workplan, so probably another couple of months for another meeting to approve the workplan and discuss the scope and structure of the AoA document, then pick a writing team who will need maybe four months for an initial draft, which gets you into summertime so maybe some more time needed there, which means a course checking meeting around there with the rest of the stakeholders and a formal comment period…

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The news this morning was all about the travel ongoing this week, and how it’s the busiest it has been all year, although it’s down more than 50% from last year. Any travel is too much travel at this point. Why risk traveling to have a turkey dinner (and knowing how all too many of us cook - dry turkey, awful sides, and purchased desserts), when it just isn’t safe to do so and you risk the lives of the people you supposedly care about.

I get that some folks haven’t seen each other in person for months. I get that.

There’s a reason for that though. All too many people refused to listen to the mask/social distance mandates since March. That allowed community spread nationwide, and the cases began their explosive climb upwards from the first wave after Sturgis. It’s because all too many people from Trump on down didn’t take this seriously. Far too many still don’t even after getting sick. Far too many still don’t even when they’re hospitalized. Doctors report that some people deny they have covid even up to the moment they’re intubated.

That’s a fucking cult mindset and there’s no easy answer except for everyone to play it safe and stay home. Staying home and limiting contacts is essential to stopping the spread of covid.

Oh, and it turns out that all the masking and social distancing has essentially stopped the spread of the flu as well. Weird how that works - masking works to save lives.

somewhat lost in the past few weeks of attempted democracy overthrow has been the usual post-election analysis centered on what the losing party got wrong.

Much of this overblown, the faults of the losing party are typically magnified above and beyond its legitimate failures. But I’ve come to anticipate it as par for the course. Trump’s denials and continuous streams of lying tweets to stir up the magahats has forced much of our analytical class away from looking at some obvious considerations of how and why an incumbent president running for his party’s second consecutive term lost for only the second time in the past century.

There have been some random pieces here and there. But Trump and the GOP’s choice to go with Stolen Election has partially if not significantly negated what would otherwise have been attention paid to Biden’s significant victory and Trump’s humiliating loss.

But Trump will have to leave the WH all the same so let us give thanks, in the spirit of the Season.

1. The attack on the wedding came just as news that the Minster was killed and the Ministry of Magic was overtaken by the Death Eaters. It took the actual coup to get people to respond - though all we see is that a bunch of teens was enough to defeat the most powerful wizard of his age (not counting Dumbledore). It seems rather odd that Voldemort would set his sights so low for such a powerful wizard. His determination to be the one to kill Potter prevented him from his ultimate wish to live forever. Knowing that killing people could create horcruxes suddenly disappeared from his repertoire, and he could have created still more after returning (especially since he was killing henchmen and others like Snape).

I have come up to western NY to visit my brother (and his fiancée) for Thanksgiving. No guests coming over for dinner, so it’s just three of us (and cats).

I have been in semi-isolation since March. My brother and his fiancée are both being tested fairly regularly since they’re university professors. And she has Covid-19 antibodies and thus is the one doing the shopping. So I’ve essentially switched my isolation location ~300 miles northwest.

And when I come back down to PA I already have supplies to carry out a two week quarantine per the regulations put in place last week for traveling out of state. New York’s regulations for visitors from adjacent states are not quite that stringent, yet.

But Trump will have to leave the WH all the same so let us give thanks, in the spirit of the Season.

Without this distraction I expected the media was going to concentrate on “Dems is disarray as they fail to take the Senate and lose ground in the House.” With Trump losing portrayed as the GOP pivoting away from going over the cliff (which they have already gone over). All part of the GOP rehabilitation in the eyes of the media.

So I was looking to see why Aubrey Plaza (actress) was trending on Twitter, and found out she’s in a movie coming out today on Hulu called “Happiest Season.” So off to Wikipedia to find out what it’s about and:

A young woman plans to propose to her girlfriend while attending her family’s annual holiday party. At the party, she realizes her girlfriend has not come out to her conservative parents yet.

And I said audibly, “OSHI—!” because wow, yes, this is a huge issue for same sex marriages with family members not just not accepting, but actually being truly hateful about their non-acceptance.

So yeah, when you see articles about “oh they should have had lesbians in all the lesbian roles” think to yourself that it was just brave to put out a movie that talks about what happens when family isn’t accepting. Yeah, I know, we should be way past that, but give that a good chunk of the country thinks being LGBTQ+ is a heinous sin up there with abortion and voting Democratic, well, yeah.

Non-woo source: Who set up this mysterious metal monolith in Utah desert? (It’s not aliens.)
Obviously someone thinks human intelligence needs a booster shot and I whole-heartedly agree. I actually wish I had thought of it. In the 90s I was part of a very loose-knit group of drinking buddies practical jokers, the Piltdown Men, who planned various spoofs and hoaxes (but mostly sat around drinking and talking about them.) Crop circles were our specialty, though we did come up with some fake UFOs and a couple of the more talented members produced genuinely hellish Halloween displays.

The pop-media reports about the monolith mostly omitted some critical details, like the object being made of sheet metal and held together by screws and embedded in packed earth rather than solid rock. If it were solid it would weigh several tons and would have required a huge effort to emplace. It’s quite a feat as it is. The jokester or artist or whatever you want to call them will be identified eventually, to well-deserved and widespread acclaim, and probably fined a minimal amount. The authorities will have to move it since they don’t want a tourist attraction in a remote and potentially dangerous area. I hope they put it on display somewhere safe though. Since it was placed illegally, the artist can’t get it back, so we can consider it a cultural donation.

The Democrats problems with the House are not entirely a matter of their infighting or ineffectiveness:

GOP poised to gerrymander its hold on power — Democrats fall short in nearly every key state

In 2018, Democrats won just three of Wisconsin’s eight U.S. House seats despite winning 200,000 more votes than their Republican counterparts. In Texas, Democrats won 47% of the vote in U.S. House races but won just 13 of the state’s 36 seats.

It’s structural. GOP efforts to gerrymander have created a permanent power base for GOP control in Congress and at the state level by diminishing the voting power of Democrats. Despite greater turnout and winning the popular vote, it’s not translating into seats because of how GOP legislatures have carved up districts.

re: #221 lawhawk

The bunch of teens were only defending Hogwarts itself, with the aid of the instructors who were no amateurs at magic, and the only thing needed to bring V’s whole construct crashing down was to kill Voldemort himself. (Clearly, this is fantasy.)

Voldemort’s insistence on killing Potter was because of the prophecy that said he could not live if Harry did, and that one of them would have to kill the other.

All that is clear in the book, I don’t remember if it’s brought out in the movie. (Also, it’s implied in the book that by creating the horcruxes he did, he’s split his soul so much that he couldn’t do another.)

A prophesy that was made clear in the movies/books, but still doesn’t make sense. It’s assumed Harry has to be one to kill Voldemort and vice versa.

“The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches… Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies… and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not… and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives… The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies…”

Until a conspiracy has been proved, it remains a theory. There are secretive organizations (e.g. Mafia, CIA, KGB) where only a few members may be aware of any specific plot and silence can be enforced There are two “theories” that he dismisses too cavalierly: JFK assassination and the Russian collusion.

1. There are many JFK assassination theories — but he overlooks the one that involves the Mafia. Let’s talk about an organization that has a long history of successful murders — and both Lee Harvey Oswald’s uncle and Jack Ruby were associated with mob.
2. We’ve never seen the unredacted Mueller Report — and what we have seen doesn’t say there was no collusion only that they didn’t have sufficient evidence; they passed the information on for further investigation and that investigation was apparently killed before it could proceed.

It is one thing to have a conspiracy theory that requires hundreds of participants to keep silent — it’s another to have one where there are only a handful who are actively involved. And let’s not forget during war, there have been secrets that have involved thousands or tens of thousands of people.

But don’t they want to disqualify all mail-in ballots? Isn’t that their objective?

Naah, more likely their “objective” is to disqualify all mail-in ballots that voted for Joe/Kamala: the rest, obviously are completely legitimate…..

Economist Lisa Cook Being on Joe Biden’s Transition Team Is a Win for Black Girls
This op-ed talks about why it matters that this prominent Black woman economist is part of the Biden-Harris transition team. by Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman, TeenVogue

Lisa Cook is a really inspiring person! I hope she moves up in the Biden administration.

With Dr. Cook’s recent appointment to the Biden-Harris transition team, the administration can now show how they will make good on rhetoric around centering Black women in economic policy, considering how critical we were to the Democrats’ success in the 2020 election.

Currently, fewer than .5% of economists identify as Black women. In our NYT op-ed on the lack of representation in the field, we quoted one Black female economist who decried the “toxic” environment and called her career choice “a mistake.” Dr. Cook’s appointment serves as confirmation to every Black girl, including me, that it’s not a mistake to choose economics and related fields. In fact, as Dr. Cook’s legacy proves, when given the opportunity, Black women can be at the forefront of changing the world.

You are right — they only target cities that voted for Biden; they don’t care about those who voted for Trump. But their ultimate goal was to throw the race into the House, by having (potentially) two slates of electors. That was the argument raised by one Trumpster as he repeatedly asserted that this wasn’t going to be decided the traditional way. Alternatively, didn’t Lou Dobbs push the suggestion that the legislatures should totally ignore the popular vote and select an their own electors?

Taking in the topic video. What a refreshing sound! Nice long jam.

I was almost 4 minutes in before I noticed she was not singing in English. At the end I was thinking “wow that was way too short”

The “no fucks left to give” part of myself really hopes that the Covid vaccine will be the end of the anti-vaxxers, and many other anti-science shits as well, since those circles overlap so much.
If the vaccine works, rational people will accept it, forget Covid and go about their former business.
The liars and genocide dupes will refuse it, Covid will continue and will kill a small but steady stream of them in a constant trickle of positive human evolution.

This is my hometown-based grocery chain, which has spent millions of dollars and many years building up a (mostly well-deserved) image of being an upscale place that cares about its customers.

But if they’re going to go lax on mask enforcement… well, fuck around and find out, Danny Wegman. Now they’re trending nationally on twitter.

[Embedded content]

Odd. I shop in a Wegman’s all the time and generally see few mask violations. And that’s mainly people not covering their nose with the mask.
