While the president tries to shift blame for last week’s insurrection, the FBI and Justice Department are making it clear that the terrorists involved will face very serious federal charges. Meanwhile, lawmakers in Washington and around the country are bracing for a second wave of right-wing violence. #Colbert #ALateShow #Monologue

If you wondered over that last 4 yrs if there was anything Trump could do that would prompt media calls for resignation, the answer is No.

hard to describe how cowardice that is.

To be fair, there have been papers that called on him to resign as a result of the January 6 siege including the Chicago Tribune and the WSJ.

Oh sweet Jesus and the Apostles—Ben Shapiro is getting into the movie business…

The right-wing pundit’s Daily Wire has partnered with disgraced film producer Dallas Sonnier—who has a history of overlooking on-set abuses—to release a school-shooting movie.

When the news broke last week that The Daily Wire, a right-wing Facebook publisher co-founded by Ben Shapiro that regularly traffics in misinformation, would be making its first foray into the movie biz with the acquisition of school shooting thriller Run Hide Fight, a number of crew members who worked on the film were caught by surprise.

“Is there a way to remove your name from a crew list?” asks Cristen Leah Haynes, the film’s additional second assistant director. “If I’d known… I’ve never wanted to take my name off of a project more.”

LinkArticle on Buzzfeed News:

Facebook has been running ads for body armor, gun holsters, and other military equipment next to content promoting election misinformation and news about the attempted coup at the US Capitol, despite internal warnings from concerned employees.

In the aftermath of an attempted insurrection by President Donald Trump’s supporters last week at the US Capitol building, Facebook has served up ads for defense products to accounts that follow extremist content, according to the Tech Transparency Project, a nonprofit watchdog group. Those ads — which include New Year’s specials for specialized body armor plates, rifle enhancements, and shooting targets — were all delivered to a TTP Facebook account used to monitor right-wing content that could incite violence.

39
Khal Wimpo (part of the vote-stealing cabal)  Jan 14, 2021 • 11:10:27am
“Facebook has spent years facilitating fringe voices who use the platform to organize and amplify calls for violence,” said TTP Director Katie Paul. “As if that weren’t enough, Facebook’s advertising microtargeting is directing domestic extremists toward weapons accessories and armor that can make their militarized efforts more effective, all while Facebook profits.”

When Democrats take over the Senate, there need to be extensive hearings on the business models of social media giants, and how they “Red Pill” ordinary Americans into morphing into murderous QAnon freaks.

Also, body armor isn’t proof against all kinds of fire. Will it stop a 5.56mm round from an M16/M4, probably. Not necessarily guaranteed. Will it stop a .308 from an M40, probably not.

As I understand it, body armor will stop handgun rounds and low-velocity rifle slugs.

Think of it like the difference between trying to pierce the plastic wrapper over a deli sammich. Using your fingertip? Just mushes and deforms, does not allow in.

Fork tine? Right through.

Thus: 5.56, .308 and most rifle rounds just go right through just about any tac vest.

Hell, a .308 will go through a cinderblock wall at 1/2 mile. Won’t do much damage, other than the spalling of flying concrete fragments, but it’ll penetrate.

5.56 is high velocity, but small caliber; wasn’t sure if the kinetic energy would be sufficient. That’s why I said “probably” (though a better word would’ve been “maybe”).

Indeed. As has been remarked hereabouts, a LOT of these freaks are going to be pleading

“Well, um, I really didn’t MEAN to bash in the doors and terrorize people, we were just going to protest and exercise our 1st Amendment rights, and a few OTHER guys kinda got out of hand, what with bashing that cop’s head in with the fire extinguisher and whatnot…”

D.A.: “I see. And is it your standard practice to put on a Kevlar vest, helmet, tactical gloves and arm yourself with a Taser and bear spray every time you go to a peaceful protest?”

They can TRY to plead defense. But it’ll be a lot harder to make that stick, especially with a skeptical D.C. jury, that has just seen all the shit they posted on Parler about “sawing libs heads off in front of their children and bathing in the blood.”

They probably added a bunch of 3rd-party libraries to it, and then their Webpack configuration chunks them into smaller files rather than having one huge multiple-megabyte Javascript file. Which is fine, but at some point you need to stop and ask yourself how many heavyweight 3rd-party libraries your Javascript REALLY needs.

Some people are going to keep calling magazines clips.

Like the Navy.

Clip: Device to hold cartridges for a rifle or pistol.
Magazine: Large space to stow ordinance including ammunition, shells, rockets, and bombs.

I wish these gun nuts would get their terms straight. /s

Yeah, going to introduce a censure resolution is pointless. Just like assuming that someone has learned their lesson. Someone needs to be punished to learn a lesson (or for others not to do the same thing in the future).

Noted asshole Nick Fuentes was the largest recipient of the mysterious donation, to the tune of $250K. Others included Daily Stormer and VDare.

Yahoo News reached out to the recipients named in this article to confirm whether they had received the funding, what information they had about the donor and what they planned on doing with the funds. None returned a request for comment, although Fuentes tweeted an obscene gesture, naming several journalists, including this reporter, shortly after the inquiry was sent.

The entire National Mall will be closed for Inauguration Day, only accessible by media and security personnel,” the Washington Post reports.

“The extraordinary closure is the latest in a series of security measures to harden the city against the type of violence that rocked the Capitol on Jan. 6. Local and federal officials had already established a downtown security zone and called up more than 20,000 National Guard troops to protect the presidential swearing in on Jan. 20.”

I’m just hoping that the protests are held back far enough so that the sound of gunfire can’t be heard at the inauguration. I’m worried that assholes are going to shoot in the air just so that the sound of gunfire becomes part of the ceremony. I wish Joe would move it inside.

Jaime Herrera Beutler (WA-3) joined on the Tea Party wave, the explicitly racist response to President Obama. She voted to impeach.

Peter Meijer (MI-3) won Libertarian Justin Amash’s seat, running on an explicitly anti-abortion (misogynist) and “religious freedom” (Christian nationalist, which is inherently racist) platform. Same district as Betsy DeVos (R-acist). He voted to impeach.

If you look at each of the ten who voted to impeach, they belong to the Racist Party. They are racists, or they wouldn’t belong to the Racist Party. (Yes, I’m painting with a broad but accurate brush.)

They are trying to position themselves as the “principled Republicans racists.” They want to separate themselves from Trump’s open racism so they can go back to the quiet racism of the entire party since Goldwater.

So I say again: LOL.

I don’t care how “reasonable” anyone from that party sounds, I do not vote for anyone in the Racist Party and never have (which is why my ballot here has been mostly blank until this election).

In my travels I have almost hit a wild turkey more than a few times. The last close one was a large tom launched himself from a tree and came across I-80 in Pennsylvania at windshield height as I was in my Bunky Big Rig. I saw him coming and I was doing about 70 and it was split second decision to slow down or hammer down and hope the air dam pushes him up just a bit. I kept the hammer down. He cut his eyes at me and was 5 or so yards from my face. We both felt that. He went by me.
Had a trucking bud who had one crash through his passenger side windshield and then go crazy and flap around inside the cab.
He got it stopped and jumped out and then opened both doors.
That bird FLEW away. Tough birds. Smart. Slick. Hard.

Immediately permanently deleting data is a Bad Idea (tm) in a human-oriented system, because people often change their minds and want to get something back. Typical storage policies range from 30-90 days. After that, they get cleaned up by a batch job running overnight. It is also more performant than deleting immediately, because calling back to do a hard delete is a much slower process than flipping a bit. All that to say, it’s a 100% guarantee that your tweets, FB posts, Parler parleys, etc., are never deleted immediately upon request and are stored in servers for quite some time, and copied to off-line backups and retained for a virtual eternity.

Republicans who are not personally Trump-loving loons are enabling the Trump-loving loons by staying in the party.

In fact, this enablement is how the GOP coalition sticks together. The GOP big tent is a union of various sets of resentful loons who all agree to not get in the way of any of their fellow loons running amok whenever they have the chance.

I was told that I couldn’t vote! WTF?

As I was leaving, I was stopped by an outside poll watcher who took down all of my vitals and I drove to work.

Just as I had arrived to work I got a phone call from change.org that I was indeed allowed to vote - in an election where Al Franken just eked on by.

I’m pretty damn sure the person who kicked me out of the precinct was a Republican, who was all apologetic when I came back to vote during lunch.

After the 2022 midterms, the GOP could be much more fascist. That is why the Democrats must be bold, not timid, in what they do in the one or two reconciliation bills they pass, to make a real difference in Americans’ lives. If fascists control both the House and the Senate in 2024, they will do what this Congress wouldn’t and install a fascist dictator as President.

I saw this happened up thread, but reading this was extra good, and made me feel better.

Upset by veterans who stormed the Capitol, these vets decided to clean up trash the mob left on the streets of D.C.

When Capitol Hill was in chaos on Jan. 6, David Smith was there.
Smith, 40, was distributing hand-warmers to homeless people nearby when the siege started. He watched in disbelief as a menacing mob stormed the U.S. Capitol.
“It was pretty gut wrenching to see,” said Smith, who retired less than a month ago after serving in the Navy for 13 years.
As a veteran, he was especially horrified, he said, to learn that his fellow vets participated in the insurrection, including Jake Angeli, also known as the “QAnon Shaman,” and Ashli Babbitt, who was shot and killed in the Capitol.
“That was a dagger to the heart,” said Smith, who was a combat medic in Afghanistan. “Just because you served in the military doesn’t give you impunity to storm the Capitol building.”

On Jan. 10, close to 200 volunteers congregated at McPherson Square, trash bags in hand. They fanned out and spent two hours collecting “Stop the Steal” and other pro-Trump paraphernalia that had been littered during the riots, and also used scrapers and adhesive remover to peel off signs and stickers featuring logos and symbols from various neo-Nazi and alt-right groups.

“But what happens when Trump leaves office on Jan. 20 — before the trial starts — and becomes a former president of the United States? Must the chief justice still preside over the trial? Could he choose to do so? Or does [that role] fall to the presiding officer of the Senate, the new vice president, Kamala Harris? For those who have Disney+, the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald did a review of a new show there called “WandaVision.” They seem to like it:

REVIEW: ‘WandaVision’ avenges our loss of good TV; in a word: It’s great

[pedant] Mr. Miller, that’s two words. [/pedant]

(We need a pedant font.)

You almost wish you could hear the conversations that prompted something like “WandaVision.”

So totally different, so off-brand, it seems like someone is punking Marvel’s universe.

Instead, it’s a very savvy way back into the world that collapsed in “Avengers: Endgame.”

Shot in black and white and paying homage to sitcoms of the 1950s and ’60s, the first two episodes find Vision (Paul Bettany) and Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) in a ranch home trying to fit in with busybodies and bean counters.

He works at a business that no one can define; she stays at home trying to make like Donna Reed. (Or, better yet, “Bewitched’s” Samantha.)

They work their magic to keep up the ruse, then find there are things that go bump in the night. Are they nothing more than tree branches? Or is this much, much more?

For those who have Disney+, the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald did a review of a new show there called “WandaVision.” They seem to like it:

REVIEW: ‘WandaVision’ avenges our loss of good TV; in a word: It’s great

[pedant] Mr. Miller, that’s two words. [/pedant]

(We need a pedant font.)

I do now, because they stood up for our democracy, and expected that to be at least good, if not great.

Baked Alaska continues to be an asshole.

After being arrested outside a Scottsdale bar for pepper-spraying a bouncer after he was kicked out, far-right troll Tim Gionet, also known as Baked Alaska, a condition of his release was that he stay in Arizona.

Now, AZCentral is reporting that prosecutors are looking to revoke his release after he was seen on video participating of the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan 6.

According to Scottsdale Assistant City Prosecutor Joshua Austin, Gionet violated his release conditions by leaving the state “without written permission from the Court” and for “failing to remain law abiding.”

The comment section is SO much faster and more responsive without rendering all the embedded tweets by default. I should have done this long ago.

I’ve seen some relief on my iPad. I navigated to two posts that had a few hundred comments and the sites rendered fine. Before your fix, they’d have straight up said “Nope, I’m out” and crashed. Appreciate the work.

I went to another one that had 400+ comments and even with the fix, the page crashed. I restarted the iPad and went back and was able to load the page.

I was blaming iOS having an issue with javascript, but now I’m wondering if there’s some sort of issue with Safari and RAM management, particularly after the iPad has been running for a while with other programs active. The bigger pages in Safari need more RAM to render properly, they can’t get any, and then the page crashes, maybe?

We were discussing this last night I think. There’s precedent for conducting an impeachment trial after one has left office, but the more recent trend (at least with judges) is to dismiss following resignation. But there’s only been 20 impeachment trials in the whole of American history, so precedent is kind of weak all around.

re: #205 thedopefishlives

A lot depends on the data retention policies of the company in question. After getting burned by a few lawsuits asking us to dig out quite old data* the company I worked for instituted policies that the legal department had approved. Certain data, generally financial in nature, gets kept a long time. Other stuff got kept via backups for a number of years (usually 7) and then is *explicitly* supposed to be permanently deleted. Same went for most emails since these are often the sort of thing legal discovery would ask for.

When we did periodic purges of data in our main transportation app to maintain performance we’d archive data onto CDs in a delimited text file. (Chosen since that’s a pretty open format that about anything can read and figure out.) The CDs were farmed out to the department with a label on them indicating what data they held and also the date at which the CD should be broken and thrown away.

* - Company we had been spun off of had been sued. So the plaintiffs were fishing for information in our archives dating back to before the spin-off. Said data they wanted searched on magnetic tapes. Many of which proved to be unreadable due to the fact that the tape itself would break off when we tried to load them up.

The Panhandle Public Health District changed their signup for the Covid-19 vaccine to age 65+ or someone with the high risk factors that have been noted by researchers.

So I went to sign my wife up (she’s already said she wants it when it is available), but the radio button on the Website does not work (there is no link).

Right about that time, the VA clinic in Sidney called to give me some information about an upcoming visit I have at the civilian hospital in Scottsbluff. Since the NP is also my neighbour and our village health board leader, I asked her about the PPHD Website.

She said she’s been fielding questions about the site not working all day, and has no information on when PPHD might get this fixed (and that isn’t her job as a VA nurse).

Updates are at 1500 MST and 1700 MST, but from the first update we’ve topped eight thousand cases here now (8,057). Deaths have also climbed to 156.

Women and “unknown” are still stubbornly 2/3 of all cases.

I am still amazed the same three villages have had no cases since this started. I confirmed that with the VA nurse that my town hasn’t had a case.

I don’t know about the disabilities thing, but I know a lot of states have a tipped minimum wage. I guess the thinking with tipped wage was that customers were paying the servers so the employer didn’t have to pay them as much?

The disability angle, may be something designed to promote higher of mentally disabled people and knowing that they have family and/or social service programs to supplement their income?

She said she’s been fielding questions about the site not working all day, and has no information on when PPHD might get this fixed (and that isn’t her job as a VA nurse).

Updates are at 1500 MST and 1700 MST, but from the first update we’ve topped eight thousand cases here now (8,057). Deaths have also climbed to 156.

Women and “unknown” are still stubbornly 2/3 of all cases.

I am still amazed the same three villages have had no cases since this started. I confirmed that with the VA nurse that my town hasn’t had a case.

Kaiser has changed theirs too, but at the moment it is equally a shit show. The phone number is their regular appointment line and when you can get through to it, you’ll have a 2 or 3 hour wait to talk to someone.
I’m really disappointed in Kaiser’s lack of organization on this-there is no recorded information on what the plan is, and nothing in particular on their website (other than call to see if you qualify, but we have limited amounts of vaccine available.) Usually they are pretty organized.

Since I’m over 65, I theoretically qualify to get the vaccine, but I suspect they’re prioritizing older people first. If they aren’t, I’m not sure how comfortable I am with the “whomever has the sharpest elbows gets to the front of the line” strategy.

Yes. It’s truly despicable because it’s used to use them (especially those who are intellectually disabled) as near slave labor. Some can be paid as little as a dollar an hour.

shrm.org.

After Goodwill controversy, spotlight on subminimum wage (Chicago Reporter, July 18, 2019)

The subminimum wage was enacted in 1938 as a New Deal provision to encourage employers to hire disabled people during the Great Depression.

At first it worked okay, but was never raised, and in the “Greed is Good” period of Ronald Reagan, companies started exploiting even mildly disabled people under the rubric “disabled people are less productive” (where that claim could be wielded against any employee with any disability).

Goodwill in Illinois went so far as to stop paying disabled employees entirely, which put a spotlight on the practice.

Disability rights advocates are hoping the controversy over the firing of workers by a downstate Goodwill Industries branch will give impetus to efforts to eliminate the subminimum wage for workers with disabilities at so-called “sheltered workshops.”

“This case highlights this practice,” and “the outrageousness” of the Goodwill branch’s position “should draw more attention to the issue,” said State Rep. Theresa Mah, who has introduced legislation to phase out the use of waivers which allow organizations employing people with disabilities to pay subminimum wages.
“The writing has been on the walls for many years: People with developmental disabilities want jobs, respect and fair pay.” - Amber Smock, Access Living

On Wednesday, Land of Lincoln Goodwill, which operates 15 stores in Central Illinois, reversed an earlier decision to stop paying most of its disabled workers — first reported by WCIA TV — after extensive negative reaction on social media and calls for hearings by legislators.

States which have banned the practice:

NH—The first state to do so, in 2015
MD—2016, the practice was phased out by law in 2019
AK—2018, banned immediately
TX—2019, banned any company working with the state “Purchasing from People” programme
OR—2019, takes effect 2023
NV—2019, the state minimum wage bill raising wages to $12/hour over five years also eliminates the subminimum wage for disabled people and other categories of workers

Regarding Covid vaccination priority:

I would recommend that anyone with an unvaccinated family member age 75+ check for the local Covid vaccination priorities. They may now be eligible.

Fairfax County Virginia has the following system. The first half of Phase 1B was opened last Monday.

1. Phase 1A
Health Care Personnel
Long Term Care Facility residents and staff

2. Phase 1B
Age 75+
People in Correctional and Homeless facilities
Essential Frontline workers
Police, fire and Hazmat
Corrections and Homeless Shelter workers
==========
( Phase 1B categories not yet opened)
Childcare/K-12 Teachers/Staff
Foodcare and Agriculture
Manufacturing
Grocery Store Workers
Public Transit Workers
Mail and package carriers
Officials needed for Govt Continuity of Operations

3.Phase 1C
65+
Ages 16-64 with vulnerable medical conditions
Other Essential workers

4. Phase 2
Any remaining Phase 1 populations
16-64 without high risk medical conditions

That was our vaccination priority until yesterday-and I was OK with it. Newsom decided we needed to get more vaccines into arms, which is true. CA is doing a mediocre job of getting people vaccinated. However, I fail to understand how just opening thing up will improve matters. There needs to be infrastructure in place to administer those doses.

I’m not a huge Newsom fan and this doesn’t improve my opinion of him. I think he’s thinking about his political career rather than any practicalities.

My guess is that in many places, the vaccination centers will have a standardized list of conditions and will also accept Medical Doctor statements of need. This of course will benefit those with better access to medical care over those who are not able to afford it. Sort of like the old draft system.

I do not see most places trying to over-ride the Medical profession. At least for very long.

that’s likely the plan

completely off topic, but I just found a used Yamaha p88 from Guiyahhhrrr! Center. I took the 3 year warranty. I’ve heard it in some Youtube reviews, and it sounds fabulous. Interesting how all Biden had to do was get elected and I’m already spending the stimulus check.

Heh. I’m waiting on the next one for $1400 to be in my grubby paws first. Hopefully by then that Ibanez 12 string will be back in stock and I can swing a nearly new Nikon D750 as well.

I don’t think a defence of “I was beating a cop because I thought he was Antifa” is really going to work in a court.

It might work at a particular time and place last century. Some people think we’re really Trump’s America, so it’s OK in this time and place, but they’re finding out we’re still America.

At the time? I wonder if he was a shitbird when he was baked and had a fun job.

Looks like “Baked alaska” is in even deeper shit now…

tim-gionet-aka-baked-alaska sounds like someone in a Lou Reed song.

It doesn’t do that for me. Perhaps your setting got messed up? about:preferences in the address bar and tick “open links in tabs instead of new windows”

That would deal with it if it were just that, but I also assume embedded tweets are displaying properly for you.

I’m getting the bare-bones box that tends to show up when there’s an embedded deleted tweet instead, but it’s still possible to view it with all its avatars and images intact by clicking on it and going to Twitter.

I love Jimmy Carter. A man of integrity who was President. Amazing and inspiring.

And someone who has deserved the long and productive life he’s had.
You know you’re *old* when you outlive your trees.
