I think we’re supposed to use this space to talk about wine now, maybe?

Consider this an open invitation to Lizards within easy reach of the Finger Lakes to get together up my way for some wine tasting and such… once circumstances once again allow it!

The Republicans have gotten so tribal that they won’t regard anything Trump did as damage, no matter how obvious and egregious. I fully expect them to protest getting kids out of cages and reunited with their families simply because Trump put them there and therefore it must be a positive good.

So yesterday I took my car in for servicing, for the first time since the pandemic began. (Haven’t been driving much!) There were a few people shopping for cars, but I was the only person sitting in a large waiting area, and son of a gun, a woman (probably in her 50s) came in and sat down next to me. I bounced up like I’d been stung, and went across the room. Didn’t say anything, but BOY, did I want to!

Email from Sen. Durbin this morning:

In his first day in office, President Biden took several important steps to put the United States back on track. He rejoined the Paris Climate Agreement, issued a plan for mask-wearing and social distancing on federal property, and recommitted the United States to the global fight against COVID-19 by re-engaging with the World Health Organization. These are all important actions that are long overdue.

President Biden also quickly issued key Executive Orders to undo the Trump Administration’s harmful immigration policies. The Muslim travel ban is gone, diverting funds for construction of the ineffective border wall has been halted, and DACA has been restored. The United States’ immigration policy will once again reflect our proud heritage as a nation of immigrants.

I am eternally grateful to President Biden for keeping his word and restoring DACA on day one. But we cannot stop there. I first introduced the Dream Act 20 years ago. I’ll keep fighting until it becomes law.

my emphasis

Boston has actually passed laws against space savers. They have made some compromises though. I believe you can now use a space saver for 2 days after a snow storm. After that if there are still space savers out the city comes by with with garbage trucks and removes them for you.

The White Trash powerless couple continue to show what petty losers they really are:

‘So petty’: Donald and Melania Trump fired chief usher before leaving White House to spite Bidens

Donald and Melania Trump sent White House ushers home early on Inauguration Day in one of their last acts in a tense presidential transition, a well-placed official not associated with the Biden team told the National Journal.

“The Trumps sent the butlers home when they left so there would be no one to help the Bidens when they arrived,” the official said. “So petty.”

[…]

“It’s a big protocol breach for the president to ever stand in front of a closed door at the White House,” said a veteran White House social expert. “That may be why there was nobody to open the doors to the Bidens. You couldn’t expect the Biden staff to know to do that. Doors are opened and closed by ushers. There are rules about all these things and everyone has their job.”

The rest of the usher staff was back on the job Thursday, but Harleth — considered to be a Trump loyalist — was not expected to be retained by the Bidens for long.

Once Trump is permanently gone from center stage, you really think American voters are going to hold the GOP responsible for his actions? Americans who have the memory of a gnat? All problems will be placed on Trump’s shoulders, with the GOP being innocent bystanders, except for the ones that the GOP will magically transfer to Biden and the Democrats. 74 million Americans were brainwashed for 2020 — 12 million more than in 2016 — and that’s with a deadly pandemic raging throughout the land. Powell managed to keep the stock market afloat and that helped to keep these voters in Trump’s pocket. Republicans gained significant number of seats in the House in the election. Do I believe or trust that there are GOP lobbyists working on GOPers in Senate to vote to remove Trump? Not entirely. Some might want to see this as a clean break, but the GOP treasonweasels in the House show that they didn’t care what Trump did - they backed him despite an armed insurrection and failed coup to destroy the US government so Trump could remain in power despite losing an election in a landslide.

The Senate GOP are stocked with the same kind of spineless cowards and treasonweasels in the House.

Fuck’em all - make them accountable for covering up Trump’s first impeachment and refusal to hold them accountable the first time that led directly to the second impeachment and need to hold him accountable again.

re: #39 Hecuba’s daughter

We have a major task at deprogramming our fellow citizens if we hope for a future or maybe we only need several dozen clones of Stacey Abrams!

Actually, I do. Only because 1/6 was a really BFD. Like a really BFD.

We shall see but that’s my opinion.

hi

As I noted yesterday, sometimes it takes the Website where legislation is filed some time to be updated.

Representative Shooter’s Grill’s resolution is now registered.

H.Res.57 - Impeaching Joseph R. Biden, President of the United States, for abuse of power by enabling bribery and other high crimes and misdemeanors.

As of 01/22/2021 text has not been received for H.Res.57 - Impeaching Joseph R. Biden, President of the United States, for abuse of power by enabling bribery and other high crimes and misdemeanors.

Bills are generally sent to the Library of Congress from GPO, the Government Publishing Office, a day or two after they are introduced on the floor of the House or Senate. Delays can occur when there are a large number of bills to prepare or when a very large bill has to be printed.

(the text is not available yet)

Congratulations on your new representative, Rifle.

I’m wondering if there might be another reason besides an expectation of pardon that these goobers were so sure they would get away with their insurrection.
It is a staple of right wing propaganda and political folklore that lefty demonstrators get off with a slap on the wrist, at worst, when they are arrested. That this isn’t really true in egregious cases obviously makes no difference. The RWNJs apparently do not understand the difference between obstructing traffic and attempted assassination as a legal liability. Added to their assumption of white privilege, this led them to think they would walk just like some kid at Berkeley who sat down in the road.

And Trump made it “OK” to be a total asshole in public. (Or at least to a greater degree than Cruz, Rush, or some of the others made it so.) Which I think is what they really ate up and empowered the mob to act and expect to be rewarded by society for doing so.

re: #129 Belafon

So, the panic of seeing people die after they receive the vaccine causes an additional 10% of the population to refuse to get the vaccine, which means we don’t reach the herd immunity that would help save more lives. Like any vaccine, it won’t protect you in all cases, which means that if we don’t get it to enough people, older people will still be vulnerable even if they get the vaccine.

Monday I am taking the 260-mile round trip to get my vaccine from the VA (I don’t know if it’s the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, the VA didn’t say but they do have the facilities for ultra-cold storage), and I’ll do it again in February.

I’ve already put out to the library director and the general store owner (that’s as good as telling everyone, because they will) that I’m getting the vaccine. Hopefully they’ll see I don’t turn into a newt or something, and alleviate some of the fears of the vaccine-hesitant here (in case they forgot about the case of mumps I got in 2012 from an anti-vaxxer’s kid when she came Christmas carolling round my house).

Charlie Pierce on impeachment:

Far be it from me to offer political advice to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, but he’s out of his mind if he doesn’t whip the 17 Republican votes needed for conviction and then vote himself for the inevitable resolution banning the former president* from ever holding political office again. Right now, the former president* has the power to monkey-wrench Republican politics from hell to breakfast. To use only one obvious example, he can freeze the 2024 presidential primaries until the nomination becomes worthless to whoever finally wins it. And, of course, that’s assuming that he doesn’t jump in himself. Just by going along with Schumer and impeachment, McConnell could rid his party of 275 pounds (est.) of dead weight.

How Biden Plans to Beat GOP Obstructionism

The Atlantic: “The trick, says Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, will be lowering the expectations of an impatient Democratic base that is eager to press the party’s slim advantage by forcing votes on issues like Medicare for All or by making structural changes that could secure the party’s power. Booker says there aren’t enough votes to pass statehood for Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico right now, nor for expanding the Supreme Court.”

“Democrats are planning to vote early and often in the new Congress, and to essentially dare Republicans to stand in their way on politically popular measures. … [L]ook for arguments over the filibuster to instead focus on COVID-19 relief (which will almost certainly end up tied to the infrastructure bill) or a new Voting Rights Act. If Republican senators hold those bills up by filibustering, Democrats would accuse them of standing in the way of helping Americans, or standing in the way of voting rights. Ending the filibuster would then be an easier sell.”

Infinity isn’t a number (when we’re talking about real number systems); it’s a shorthand for a sequence that has no greatest value or a process where something increases without bound (sort of, so mathies don’t get mad at me). It’s misusing the term infinity, really, to say that something “equals infinity”. No number multiplied by 0 gives the answer 1, so the value is undefined. For computer computation, it returns the result “inf” because it’s convenient to design things that way.

GOP has built an entire cottage industry on blocking and obstructing action. They don’t have any substantive policies of their own. All they have is wrecking the policies put forth by Democrats.

1 in 3 Americans are on Facebook. 1 in 5 are on Twitter. Not most people but it’s a lot. I think out of every single person I know, I’m talking several hundred people here all over the country and in other countries (including people in towns with like 5 people in the middle of Montana and Wyoming) maybe a couple dozen are not on Facebook.

Point is, it’s not weird to think it’s weird to not be in social media.

FFS, just had a phone visit from a friend who’s a diehard pro-Trump conservative, warning me that Walmart and Costco will become federalized so “we” can only shop at federal stores, under federal laws, and will be made to wear masks and “they” will use facial recognition at every store to track us.

And “they’re” coming to take our guns (again? still?). All white cops will be fired because “they” are the real racists. And the borders are wide open now, so illegals are bringing us more COVID (though COVID is a hoax) and going to take all the jobs.

It isn’t even worth holding up a hand or asking a question, because I’ve learned the Q-thinkers go into the weeds with such a vengeance to defend this nuclear level bullshit, it isn’t worth it. They believe it, they want to believe, there is no changing their mind. They aren’t going to trust a factual source (because it’s all fake news) that contradicts their beliefs, so why bother?

I know this person watches Fox and follows OANN, religiously. They warned me about Hillary and Katy Perry worshiping Satan and eating babies a year or so ago.

Once again, still, fuck Fox, OANN, Q, Limbaugh, Gateway, the entire GOP, and every other fuck that has perpetuated this horseshit magical thinking.

Another urgent item for Biden’s to-do list: The looming Social Security funding crisis
The effects of the pandemic and the recession could accelerate shortfalls in trust funds

WaPo

The pandemic is going to start catching up with the economy. Trump was able to stave off a lot of it with massive bailouts, but that cannot last forever.

And of course, it will all be Biden’s fault for cancelling Keystone and stopping drilling/mining at Bear’s Ears…

I hate to say it, but get ready to start seeing Kellyanne Conway in the media again.

She gets a feature in Axios today, referring to her as a “power broker” without a single mention of her grotesque record of lying for Donald Trump.

Bill Maher had her on his show before the inauguration (and the coup attempt, I think). IIRC, the Daily Beast said he sorta kinda held her feet to the fire about some stuff. She made a claim about Americans being better off than they were four years ago, and he countered that for 400,000 of them, that wasn’t the case.

The rest of the article sounded like he went easy on her, given their long time friendship.

I’m waiting for MSNBC to start picking these shitheels up for shows and panel positions like they did with some of the Bush II universe. Both sides and all that.

I’ve got a 75 year old friend who used to run a media lab at a major St. Paul private university, developed a website about learning that he sold for a million dollars when he retired and has gone overseas to conferences about learning, still lovingly maintains his personal website, and refuses to own a cell phone. He’s very proud that he’s never had one. I think that’s pretty weird.

From the innertubs.

Fans of the Costco food court know that there are three standard options available — cheese, pepperoni, and combo — all of which are loaded to the hilt with toppings. We’re talking 24 ounces of cheese, 60 pepperoni slices, and four-and-a-half pounds of meat and veg, respectively, according to The Costco Connection

I did hear a remark on some program the other day about how Harris’ family was a “first.” I think maybe they were referring to that, because the only other thing I could think of was that this is her husband’s second marriage, but that’s hardly a first.

I think I’ve lived in the SF Bay Area too long because the mixed race family wasn’t the first thing to leap to mind-in fact I puzzled over the remark for a minute or so before I came up with mixed race.

BREAKING: A Federal Aviation Administration employee who believed he had “Q clearance” and that Jan. 6 would be the start of WWIII was already on the FBI’s radar when he stormed the U.S. Capitol. He now faces charges.

If you have a national security clearance you know about it from the big ass application form you have to complete and nice scary paper you have to sign when you’re cleared. For anyone who doesn’t know and doesn’t want to google anything like this, Q clearance is a real thing, but it’s just the name for a Top Secret clearance at the Department of Energy. So, nobody at the FAA is going to have one, and even if you do have one it doesn’t mean that you get to paw through classified FBI files.

I’ve always thought that This Land is Your Land would be almost perfect as a national anthem, maybe with some tweaking of geographic references to take in recent changes. I also know that RWNJs would have a litter of live, full-grown horned toads if a national figure so much as proposed it, since author Woody Guthrie was allegedly a commie or at least a fellow traveler.
It’s ok with them, though, that Francis Scott Key was pro-slavery, since it is about the song rather than the author.

AB - A^2 = B^ - A^2
A(B-A) = (B+A)(B-A)
A = B+A
A = A+A
A = 2A

Had an interesting phone call today from my cell provider (T-Mobile). The call originated from one of the 3 stores within a two mile radius from each other (one was an old Sprint Store, the first store up in my area is a franchise.)

Anyway, the guy wanted to reach out to me and thank me for being one of the very long-term customer in their area (13 years, but T-Mobile didn’t officially roll out up here until 3-4 years ago) and wanted to make me aware of some of the new services they provided. I kindly informed the salescritter that I’m using their femtocell because their signal strength isn’t the best out my (and to be fair, same goes for Verizon and AT&T.)

When he mentioned about their internet and TV service, I told him that being a remote worker I can easily blow through a terabyte a day, and that, as far as high-speed internet goes, Spectrum hasn’t been all that bad.

Just for giggles I checked my LTE logger to see if I ever hit Band 71 (LTE/5G, 600 MHz) and saw few (if any) connections. Now when the fully integrate Sprint’s midband network, things may change.

Still, I was pleasantly surprised that a company like T-Mobile reached out and wanted to know how satisfied and could they do something for me.

Senators introduce bill to award Officer Goodman the Congressional Gold Medal
thehill.com

A bipartisan bill was introduced in the Senate on Friday to award Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman the Congressional Gold Medal for his actions during the riot that occurred on Jan. 6.

The bill was introduced by Sens. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), and Ben Cardin (D-Md). It seeks to gives Goodman the Congressional Gold Medal after he was credited for leading rioters away from a door to the Senate during the riot.

“The attack on the Capitol on January 6 was a tragic assault on our democracy that could have been much worse had it not been for the quick actions by Capitol Police Officers like Officer Eugene Goodman,” Tillis said Friday.

“She’s a 21-year-old girl and she’s got her whole life ahead of her. She knows this was obviously a mistake and she’s ready to move past it,” said Ethan Corlija, Hernandez’s attorney.

Well bully for you. I’m not ready to move past it. Not until you’ve served some hard time.

And…

“He regrets very very much having not just been duped by the President, but by being in a position where he allowed that duping to put him in a position to make decisions he should not have made,” said Watkins. “As to my client, the guy with the horns and the fur, the meditation and organic food…I’m telling you that we cannot simply wave a magic wand and label all these people on January 6th the same.”

Well, yes, we can and will label you insurrectionists the same.

By reading this, it sounds like the attorney (who’s repping several of these miscreants) is gonna put trump on trial. That’ll be interesting.

“Let’s roll the tape. Let’s roll the months of lies, and misrepresentations and horrific innuendo and hyperbolic speech by our president designed to inflame, enrage, motivate,” said Watkins. ” What’s really curious is the reality that our president, as a matter of public record, invited these individuals, as President, to walk down to the capitol with him.”

Actually, mathematics is the only area of human knowledge where infinity has been dealt with in ways that don’t lead to nonsense.

Higher level maths and quantum physics (but I Venn diagram myself), tend to make most people eventually squint and say “OK, if you say so.”

I mean, I love Rudy Rucker’s books, and they kinda sorta make sense most of the time, but sometimes he gets down in the weeds and I am quite frankly lost.

During One Phoenix Comicon, they went through a remembrance of all of the people who had passed. Someone posted the con to Youtube, and it’s a must see, even if you never liked Babylon 5, for what the real lives were for the characters in the show.

Since that Phoenix Comicon (2013), two people who appeared on the panel (excluding Mira Furlan) passed away: Stephen Furst (Vir, aka ‘Moonfaced assassin of joy’), and Jerry Doyle (Michael Garibaldi, who in real-life turned into a right-winger and had a radio show in Las Vegas.)

That’s up to how the state distributes vaccines. She’s on Panhandle Public Health District’s list (I signed her up about ten minutes after it went live), but distribution in the state is fouled up by two things: 1) Shortage, 2) the state copying Trump’s playbook and pushing distribution off on the public health districts rather than taking a statewide approach. The state Website even says signups are the responsibility of public health districts and must be done electronically (fucking over everyone without Internet service or cell service).

broward county is fubar

After we told them we’d been with T-Mobile for the better part of two decades, they were surprised but pleased, and the conversation (so I gather; Mrs. Fish was the one who talked to him, I was somewhere else) was similar to what you describe.

I’m just saddened that Microsoft couldn’t make their Nokia investment pay out. When I had a Dell Venture (Based on Windows Phone 7), I set up text notifications of any transactions. SO I drive up to my bank make a withdrawal, and then my car responded back via the phone: “You have a message from: xxxx - do you wish to read or ignore?”

To this day neither Google or Apple went that far into the Bluetooth stack to make such an interface happen.

I think being there on the orders of a white nationalist President was also a factor. One cop got scared and killed the terrorist that Republicans call “the unarmed American woman,” but they let the mob kill a cop rather than use lethal force against the rest of the attackers.

Had Obama been who they claim he was and had the Black Panthers attack the Capitol to fight white supremacy, they’d all be dead, and Obama would be in prison.

It’s a cheap and easy way to put their loyalty on display for everybody to see, but not permanently, like a tattoo or a bumper sticker. Because if they change their fickle minds later, they can put the flag in the back garage or burn it, and never have to admit to it.

Obama is probably the closest the Left came to having a cult of personality, because the man was extremely charismatic - and the first Black President, which is pretty darn cool. But he still didn’t get worshiped the way some of these fucknuts worship Trump. I just don’t get that. Trump is an actual living asshole, what’s to worship?

There are some neighborhoods where I would give even yard signs a pass, because it’s likely that the inhabitants of those houses are still in Florida for the winter.
