Obama Administration Notices Iran’s Manhattan Project

World • Views: 3,100

Another Obama campaign talking point (“Bush is just fearmongering!”) bites the dust, as his administration faces reality: U.S. now sees Iran as pursuing nuclear bomb.

Reporting from Washington — Little more than a year after U.S. spy agencies concluded that Iran had halted work on a nuclear weapon, the Obama administration has made it clear that it believes there is no question that Tehran is seeking the bomb.

In his news conference this week, President Obama went so far as to describe Iran’s “development of a nuclear weapon” before correcting himself to refer to its “pursuit” of weapons capability.

Obama’s nominee to serve as CIA director, Leon E. Panetta, left little doubt about his view last week when he testified on Capitol Hill. “From all the information I’ve seen,” Panetta said, “I think there is no question that they are seeking that capability.”

And there’s almost no chance that Obama is going to stop them.

Wow, I always thought Iran was just developing peaceful nuclear technology for domestic power production only. I had no idea they wanted to build a bomb out all that uranium. I am shocked! This news is coming out of the blue. Who could have guess this!?

So, since Barry’s finally admitted the truth of the matter, albeit in his own weaselly way, what does he propose to do about it? More talking, perhaps?

The real question is how this can be blamed on W or the israelis, or both?

7 lawhawk  Fri, Feb 13, 2009 9:28:48am

He’ll talk with them, stand down our military capabilities, reduce and/or halt weapons tech development, but not do what is right and necessary for US national security - and that’s to stand up to the mad mullahs in Iran and tell them in no uncertain terms that they will not be permitted to develop nuclear weapons.

If Obama back-pedals on a campaign promise, or takes a hypocritical position, it can only be a good thing.

23 RoughRider  Fri, Feb 13, 2009 9:31:15am

The solution is encouraging Iran to only pursue nuclear power for peaceful purposes.

And if that doesn’t work, we will encourage them a second time…. perhaps using an outrageous French accent.

Neither Obama nor George Bush is or was prepared to do anything about Iran’s nuclear weapons except talk a tough game.
Israel will have act on it’s own- and the US can condemn it in the UN just like Reagan did when they took out Iraq’s nuclear weapons facility.

I don’t think we have to go as far as talking to them in an outrageous French accent, that is a bit harsh. However, I think a strongly worded letter from the UN is in order. THAT will teach them a lesson, fer sure.

It’s because he knows he can’t get anything done with Iran without pissing off his domestic and international constituencies, whereas Israel, with a leftist, dovish government, can be pushed to make the sort of suicidal gestures required to make Barry look like the guy who “fixed” the Mideast.

Likud, while not exactly what I’d like to see, would at least put up a bit of a struggle.

McCaffrey Update on National Security

•US-Russia relations will grow more hostile –Prime Minister Putin has re-established authoritarian control of the state and its mechanisms.
•The crisis in Iraq will stabilize and US forces will largely withdraw in the coming 36 months. (35,000 US killed and wounded —$687 billion total).
•The next five years in Afghanistan will be complex. The political and economic situation may improve with massive new US resources. ($184 billion expended). Our Allies will not step up to the military challenge. The country is in misery.
•North Korea will come apart. We must facilitate a soft landing for this dangerous regional nuclear power.
•The situation in Pakistan is unstable. Our position in Afghanistan would be untenable without Pakistani support. Democracy is at peril.
•Iran will go nuclear and create instability in the Persian Gulf. The Sunni Arabs will create a nuclear-military coalition.
•Mexico in desperate need of serious US political and economic support to confront violent criminal drug cartels. US must act in deference to Mexican sovereignty.
•The death of Castro —meltdown of repression –250,000 refugees within 36 months.
•Confrontation with Chavez —instability and oil. We have no US Latin-America regional strategy.
•Terrorists will strike at America during the next Administration’s first term.

I believe that they can but I am not sure that it would make a difference on the voting as it only requires a simple majority to conduct business.

A quorum is the minimum attendance—half the members plus one—necessary for either the Senate or House to conduct business. If a quorum is not present, no business can be transacted.

So, since Barry’s finally admitted the truth of the matter, albeit in his own weaselly way, what does he propose to do about it? More talking, perhaps?

The real question is how this can be blamed on W or the israelis, or both?

Well, yes, from the LA Times article that Charles linked to:

“When you’re talking about negotiations in Iran, it is dangerous to appear weak or naive,” said Joseph Cirincione, a nuclear weapons expert and president of the Ploughshares Fund, an anti-proliferation organization based in Washington.

Cirincione said the unequivocal language also worked to Obama’s political advantage. “It guards against criticism from the right that the administration is underestimating Iran,” he said.

By revealing this now it makes him appear prepared and it helps guard against criticism from the right so he’ll be able to talk to the Iranians much more effectively … to some end or the other.

Well, Bush and the Israelis could have stopped the Iranian project years ago, but didn’t.
And SecDef Gates blocked Israel from attacking last summer.
And then there is the f’ing UN which did nothing (but that is normal for them)

He’s not the naive. The point is to create or use, as Emanuel said, a crisis to have the public screaming for the government to do something. We will turn over more of our money and more of our liberties until it all resides in the State. This is the point. Don’t get yourselves confused that this is a normal presidency. This is a coup. This is intended to change our government. And it’s preceding happily apace.

There is no Ronald Reagan on the horizon that we can see. If Congress wants to investigate anything, they should investigate the failure of the NIE.

The 2007 NIE was widely misquoted and widely unread. What the report actually said was that the US intelligence community has a high degree of confidence that from 2003 to 2006 Iran suspended the warhead development phase of their nuclear weapons program. During that period the Iranians continued to work on the other two phases: uranium enrichment & ballistic missile development. After 2006, the confidence level in that assessment dropped to moderate.

In other words, the NIE never said Iran stopped their nuclear weapons program, only that they slowed down one part of it while the concentrated on the other parts.

European “free speech” debate: Geert and MPACUK agree……
MPACUK - Sky News - 12th Feb 2009

Youtube Video

The MPAK chick starts off by rightly pointing out that Geert isn’t a free speech advocate, he’s proposing book banning. She then continues to point out that Mien Kampf is hate speech and rightfully illegal. This is the same reasoning Geert uses to justify the banning of the Quran. The only difference between the two sides in this debate is that they each want to utilize hate speech laws to advance their own agenda and silence their opponents. This pretty clearly demonstrates why banning something as universally repulsive as Mien Kampf only leads to Goodwin’s Law as the litmus test for free speech.

re: #123 Kenneth

The 2007 NIE was widely misquoted and widely unread. What the report actually said was that the US intelligence community has a high degree of confidence that from 2003 to 2006 Iran suspended the warhead development phase of their nuclear weapons program. During that period the Iranians continued to work on the other two phases: uranium enrichment & ballistic missile development. After 2006, the confidence level in that assessment dropped to moderate.

In other words, the NIE never said Iran stopped their nuclear weapons program, only that they slowed down one part of it while the concentrated on the other parts.

Still, the folks who disseminated the findings produced a summary that cherry picked the things they wanted to emphasize that implied that Iran had stopped seeking nuclear weapons. That had the desired political effect. True the NIE wasn’t a disaster, it was the way it was presented that was. But most of us will still use the shorthand “NIE” when we really mean the “highly politicized summary of the NIE.”

re: #188 Kenneth

The NIE stated only that the they had a high degree of confidence that the warhead design & development phase was “suspended” from 2003 to 2006. The other parts of the program continued: uranium enrichment & missile development. The degree of confidence in those assessments was “absolute certainty”. The NIE said they had only moderate confidence that the partial suspension continued after 2006.

They might have had enough info that they didn’t need to do work on the warhead itself for a while.

Something approaching open season for attacks on Jews appears to be in force in Toronto. I recall Obama in a radio interview which made its appearance during the campaign, discussing how the Constitution unfortunately limited the powers of government. I suspect that any link would be to that interview or some similar statement(s).

I have no idea if Obama said that the Bill of Rights is anti-government—but it is true, whether or not he said it. The Bill of Rights exists for the purpose of placing clear limits on the government’s powers, which is indeed “anti-government.”

Does this mean that I am worried about Obama imposing martial law or some such thing? No. Not at present, in any event. Does it mean that I am concerned that he will try to repeal or abrogate the Bill of Rights? No. Not at present, in any event.

And all I was trying to point out is he didn’t say those words, and as you point out, that’s just what the documents expound on.

But, said the wrong way, it makes Obama sound like he is anti our founding documents.

Cops quell anti-Israel attack at York U
By Ron Csillag · February 13, 2009

TORONTO (JTA) — Toronto police quelled tensions between Jews and anti-Israel activists at the campus of one of Canada’s largest universities for the second time in two weeks.

Hillel@York, the on-campus club for Jewish students at Toronto’s York University, said that anti-Israel activists “isolated and threatened Jewish students” during a Feb. 12 news conference on the fallout from a three-month-long strike that ended recently at York.

Jewish students allegedly were subjected to anti-Semitic slurs and physically intimidated. The anti-Israel activists allegedly barricaded Jewish students in Hillel’s office.

Toronto police escorted the Jewish students out of the office to ensure their safety.

Among the slurs allegedly uttered by those barricading Hillel’s office were, “Die bitch — go back to Israel” and “Die Jew — get the hell off campus.”

Last week, police were called to York during a physical altercation involving an anti-Israel activist.

“The climate on York’s campus of aggressive intimidation, violent rhetoric and physical harassment is unacceptable,” said Daniel Ferman, President of Hillel@York. “The hostile environment demonstrates contempt for all students — not only to Jewish students.”

B’nai Brith Canada has requested an “urgent” meeting with York University officials to discuss security for Jewish students.

They need to lose, as humanely as can be arranged, but in such a manner as there can be no doubt that they lost. We shouldn’t want such an event but I don’t see an alternative. The Islamists must lose at least of these riots to take the wind out of their sails. I’d much prefer and would actually advocate a strong show of force that resulted in them backing off. And all I was trying to point out is he didn’t say those words, and as you point out, that’s just what the documents expound on.

But, said the wrong way, it makes Obama sound like he is anti our founding documents.

If he said “unfortunately” the Bill of Rights limits the government, then perhaps he really is anti our founding documents.

He frequently doesn’t really seem to understand the Constitution when he talks about it, or when he talks about things he intends to do as President.

Or perhaps he figures the rules simply don’t apply to him.

Obamandias

(with apologies to Percy Bysshe Shelley)

I met a time traveler from our future land
Who said: “A vast and endless stimulus plan
brought forth early in Obama’s reign,
utterly sank the economy, or what remained;
And shamed the Messiah’s cold command
Of grandiose ambitions not quite dead,
But shattered upon Supply and Demand.
The One who mocked them; who once had said,
“Vero possumus”, but then never could
Repeal reality and so declined
His name was Obama, The One, The Light
So young and well-spoken, very refined;
Who promised to banish the scary night
Pay for mortgages, gas for free
Round the colossal decay of liberty
Prosperity and Peace cower out of sight.”

To complete the effect, the final words from the original poem:

And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Democrats Delay Bill Release to Conceal Details

Democratic staffers released the final version of the stimulus bill at about 11 p.m. last night after delaying the release for hours to put it into a format which people cannot “search” on their home computers.

Instead of publishing the bill as a regular internet document — which people can search by “key words” and otherwise, the Dems took hours to convert the final bill from the regular searchable format into “pdf” files, which can be read but not searched.

Jewish Students Condemn Violence on York Campus
February 12, 2009 – 1:51 pm
Press Release
Feb. 12, 2009

Hillel@York, Hasbara@York and the Canadian Centre for Israel Activism, representing Jewish students at York University, strongly condemn the violent behavior and intimidation tactics targeting Jewish students that have taken place in the past 24 hours on campus.

For the second time in a week, Toronto police were called on campus as anti-Israel organizers isolated and threatened Jewish students. During a news conference held by a coalition of diverse students to impeach the York Federation of Students, anti-Israel organizers shut down the announcement, yelling anti-Semitic slurs and physically intimidating Jewish students. Shortly after, they barricaded Jewish students at Hilllel’s lounge on campus, continuing to threaten students. Toronto police officers escorted the students out of the office to ensure their safety.

Among the slurs shouted by those barricading Hillel’s office were “Die bitch, go back to Israel”, “Die Jew, get the hell off campus”, “F-king Jew” “racists off campus”.

Last week, police were called during a physical altercation by an anti-Israel activist.

“The climate on York’s campus of aggressive intimidation, violent rhetoric and physical harassment is unacceptable”, said Daniel Ferman, president of Hillel@York.

“The hostile environment demonstrates contempt for all students - not only to Jewish students, who are still trying to recover from a three month strike and for the university itself,” said Aaron Rosenberg.

Ok, I made a mistake, I read deeper into the article. They made SCANS of the pages and then created a PDF of the scans, so actually the whole PDF is “pictures.”

And those, you cannot just run an easy search on. Looks like they’re trying to hide something.

re: #349 Iron Fist

I don’t think Obama would cheat on his wife. That would seem to be out of character for him. OTOH, if you told me he snorted an eight-ball all by himself last night, it wouldn’t surprise me. Or any number of other things that he could/would do. I was surprised at the swiftness and scope of his, I don’t know what to call it, really, but outreach to terrorists? Appeasement? Something along those lines. That he would stop prosecution of the Cole bomber is wrong on so many levels. I had no doubt that Obama would try appeasement to see how that works on terrorists, but stopping prosecutions that were already in progress seems a little, no a lot over the top.

I said it at about his two week mark, that he wouldn’t be acting any different than how he is acting now if he were a closet terror-sympathizer. That looks even more correct with another week or ten days of actions to reflect on.

My bet is that he’s just getting started.

That would imply he possessed a set of balls, that has already been proven wrong.

That paragraph doesn’t make sense. You CAN search PDF files.

It should be up (searchable) at readthestimulus.org later today. Here’s what we’re up against in getting a searchable copy (from the Web site):

The total size of the four major files is over 100MB, and consists of 1419 pages. Three of the four files are huge “scanned” PDFs, meaning they were created by printing the original document and then scanning it in again —- and therefore contain no real “text” that can be easily searched. This will make our parsing process difficult and more time consuming, so we most likely won’t have our versions ready until midday tomorrow. But we’ll see…

Sneaky bastards.

381 Walter L. Newton  Fri, Feb 13, 2009 10:43:19am

re: #350 Killian Bundy

And, they had to have done that ON PURPOSE. As far as I know, the government standard for documents is WORD (it was when I worked for the DOE) and you can take a WORD document and produce a PDF directly from it, a searchable PDF. And rather quickly.

They would have had to spend much more time scanning the pages, turning them into JPG’s or whatever, and then plucking them into a WORD document and THEN converting the whole thing.

This is a standard radical tactic, whatever the protest is originally about (in this case it was the recent strike) Islamist activists take it over and turn it into an anti-Jewish rally. A similar thing happened at U of T a few months ago during a peaceful protest over SAC fees. Islamists took over the protest and stormed an administration building targeting offices of Jewish staff members.

Nonsensical headline of the day, courtesy of the NYT:

Hamas Says Cease-Fire Nears; Israel Demurs

Hamas and the terrorists have continued firing rockets and mortars at Israel virtually nonstop since the end of Operation Cast Lead, but now they say that they’re going to engage in a ceasefire? It will be nothing more than the last time (or any of the prior periods). It’s Israel ceases, Hamas fires. It’s a hudna where Hamas gets to regroup and rearm without worrying so much about Israel firing on them. Hamas gets the bonus of firing occasional kassams at Israel without worrying about reprisals, and the Israeli government goes along with this nonsense.

Yet, this time it looks like Israel isn’t going to be so easily suckered into playing this game again, but you can be sure that the US is strongarming Israel into doing just that - in the name of peace.

I would agree with you if GWB were still president. But the left used that “no WMD found” as a club against Bush at it eventually become “bush lied people died.” I think Obama could do it if he were inclined.

Still, I think the only acceptable proof will be a smoking crater. Tapper is one of the few in the MFM who will ask decent questions. This is specifically about Tapper asking a question about Obama claiming that the Caterpillar CEO said that if the stimulus bill is passed, Caterpillar would start rehiring. The Caterpillar CEO later said publicly that there would likely be more layoffs before any rehiring would occur.

Tapper was challenging Obama’s assertion.

Ok, I made a mistake, I read deeper into the article. They made SCANS of the pages and then created a PDF of the scans, so actually the whole PDF is “pictures.”

That would explain why it tooks hours to make a pdf. Normally one simply takes a couple of mouse-clicks to select “Save as pdf”, and the job is done.

Law minds herein.

This “unseen” , “unread”, ” unknown” stimulus bill.

If passed without being read by those who vote for it, and each of them having sworn to uphold the Constitution and once the bill is known and it is clear parts of it are in direct conflict with the Constitution and the courts uphold that on the portions unread, unknown and unseen,

Are these acts by these Senators and Congressmen impeachable offenses under the law?

TFK -

Senators and Congressman are the ones who do the impeaching. And as far as I know there is no legal requirement that the Senators and Congressmen actually read the bill before voting.

So legally and practically speaking the answer is no.

Frankly, these guys are are doing things the founder probably never even imagined. Trying to rope them in with legal requirements is like fighting crime with gun control laws.

After the “no WMD found” issue (debacle?) after Iraq, I see absolutely zero chance of any country (especially the USA) doing squat to Iran until and unless they actually launch a nuke at somebody.

Dinnerjacket could show the nukes on TV, and there would be enough dissent that the world doesn’t have any “proof” to delay matters until things got half past too late.

Worse. After Manhattan goes mushroom and Dinnerjacket takes responsibility to help speed up the return of the 13th Imam before Tehran turns to glass, the Troofers would say that it was a controlled demolition carried out by Neocons and that radiation levels are not consistent with actual nuclear fallout. CNN I-reporters would confirm this by showing experiments carried out from their bathtubs.

Jimmy Kimmel was a guest on William Shatner’s talk show, and he discussed how some celebrities seem to think they don’t need to show up sober and ready to work when they’re a talk show guest.

Well so much for our future (my retirement age has just been raised to 85).
Notice 1 Present vote (guess practicing to be next POTUS?)

Walter, if your community gets money from the porkpak, you’re part of it. Like it or not. Believe me, I don’t like it either.

I see CA sales taxes are going up, again. We’ll be at just about 10% now. $10 for every $100 I spend. Great…

re: #535 jcw46

I may indeed be in your camp in 6 months. Obama’s first month has been unimpressive to say the least. I guess what I’m trying to get at is that, as an American, I want his to be successful in the same sense that I want every President to be successful - in terms of the long-term well-being of the country and not just in getting a certain agenda passed. That said, as a Republican, I also feel a responsibility to speak out and oppose policies that I think are wrong. I think it’s possible to do so without looking like a BDS-stricken moonbat.

…and just to be clear, I’m not in any way suggesting that you resemble one of the BDS crowd. You are a fellow lizard, after all.

I am so effing depressed today. No amount of chocolate is going to fix it.

I had such a need of chocolate last night, and no chocolate in the house.
Or, wait - yes there was.
A can of chocolate cake icing.
I opened it and just started taking spoonsful of the stuff.
That’s when you know you’re desperate.

I would not be surprised in the least to learn that this stunt was a publicity stunt. I mean, here we are talking about it.

Okay now, guys, it is time to suck it up and be the patriots that the left weren’t for the past 8 years. Applied to this circumstance, this what it means. Even though Obama richly deserves derision for putting down the threat all those years, we cannot punish him for recognizing it now. Instead we should say, a la Bruce Willis in Die Hard when he finally got the police’s attention: Welcome to the party!

Welcome to the party, Obama. And at this party we recognize that Iran is getting nukes so it can wipe isreal off the map, and possibly flatten manhatten. That means you can’t let them have nukes.

And in case anyone asks, the reason we can have nukes, isreal can have nukes, but iran can’t is: because lunatics are not in charge of the other two countries.

Take a little trip in the Obama Time Machine.

Israel is teenie - and Helen Thomas is worried. How does that factor in?

“Pray” it will work! This is a business plan?

After all the crap that the dems have thrown at Republicans about being stupid dolts, I wonder if they have ever actually listened to their own brain trust.

The O and this congress are probably the best snake-oil salesman in the histor of man. They should be so proud. Gag!

Politics aside, an angry Michelle Obama would be very scary amusing/entertaining.

This is absolutely infuriating.

This is the “how could this happen?”

I’m writing off Jewish Democrats.

As an American Jew, and as an Israeli, I lay much of the blame at their doorstep.

re: #537 tackle

I could search it, too. Perhaps they were just trying to slow things down, as it’s probably more cumbersome to search, copy and cite things from a pdf than it is from html text. Or it might be much ado about nothing.

Downloaded both Division A and Division B Bill Texts, opened with Acrobat and had no trouble searching the text. I couldn’t find the Sec. 1607 that was quoted, after 1604 it goes to 1701. Not sure if I’m looking at the same thing that they were in the article.

Regardless, it’s a crap bill and I bet not a single one of the people voting for this POS actually read the damn thing from end to end.

558 Ron Shaw  Fri, Feb 13, 2009 1:52:45pm

You don’t say!

‘Development’ vs. ‘pursuit.’

‘Development’ evidently is much too strong in that it implies action while ‘pursuit’ can be seen as a more passive in an idea driven way rather than an active or on-going reality. Or, as my wife has explained it, ‘standing at the alter was a development, asking me out on a first date was a pursuit!’ Women are very intelligent and especially where semantics are concerned. They tend to be non-PC post ‘I do’, as well.

No matter how PC or liberal Obama is, Iran is ‘developing’ nuclear weaponry and freedom loving countries of the world should be actively trying to stop the development. If it were only a ‘pursuit’ by Iran, collectively, we could continue to rest our heads beneath the cool sands of assdumb bliss.

559 So?  Fri, Feb 13, 2009 1:59:19pm

All talk, no action. That goes for the (past & present) White House to the lame media reports to the lame politicians around the world who still insist that Elvis is alive. Unfortunately, the dreaded day will come when iran nukes Israel or some American city. Then all those who have any power to stop this thing right now, this very minute, will point fingers at each other saying you/we coulda, shoulda, woulda. It’s like a bad ayatollah roadrunner cartoon.

560 So?  Fri, Feb 13, 2009 2:04:00pm

It’s time for IRAN to be taken down a few notches. Their imams and dinnerjackoffs have been permitted to blather lies and nonsense for far too long. What’s even more idiotic is that the MSM press prints and reports every word of it.

561 So?  Fri, Feb 13, 2009 2:05:57pm

re: #275 taxfreekiller

Obama knows what got him to where he is, he will continue to use the same methods he has in the past.

1. He lies.
2. He cheats.
3. He misuses political power.
4. He throws any one he needs to under the bus.

I’ve been wondering about this for a long time, is it the same bus, or does Obama have a fleet of buses at his disposal?

Obama’s got bad juju.

If Islamic extremists get their hands on a suitcase bomb, we will have have more than some bad juju, bubba. We will be DEAD.
