I saved the next-day L.A.Times-3-12. It showed a photo of a candlelight crowd in a giant plaza in spain.
They were all raising their arms in surrender…

Ok, I would like the take from the right on Obama’s earmark reform plan introduced today, good or bad idea ? Can the executive branch enforce them or does Congress need to pass a bill ? Here’s the basics:
Obama said he believed future legislation could include reforms to make the budget process more transparent and trustworthy and rein in the use of earmarks.
“I believe as we move forward, we can come together around principles that prevent the abuse of earmarks,” he said in his speech a hour or so ago. Good idea, bad idea, could it work with the love both sides have for pork ?
“These principles begin with a simple concept: earmarks must have a legitimate and worthy public purpose.
He said they should all be aired on Congressional members websites in advance for comment, and earmarks for for-profit private companies should be subject to competitive bidding practices.”
and:
House Democratic leaders announced two new measures to change the way earmarks are used. A 20-day review by the executive branch would be required, and earmarks for for-profit companies would require competitive bidding. “

IIRC, the same group that did the 3/11 bombings were planning another round, when the Spanish anti-terrorist police caught up with them; in the raid, the jihadists detonated a bomb in their own hideout, and killed at least one cop. This was… hm, less than 6 months after 3/11, I think.

Mocking is not okay. But commenting on the post-bombing machinations of the Spanish government IS okay. I saw thousands protesting against American policy and then the new government was swept into power. Since then, I have seen NO protests of Spanish policy. It is just as fair for Americans to feel abandoned by Spain as it is for you to feel defensive about your country.

The government held that out as the initial theory, but by late evening on the same day of the bombings, the Interior Ministry was already saying that there were “new lines of inquiry”. I think the “oh, the election swung because the government lied to us” idea is ex-post rationalization on the part of the Spanish left. They surrendered, out of fear.
I agree that Aznar jumped the gun, but blaming bombings in Madrid on ETA isn’t exactly a nutty conspiracy theory… ample precedent for it.

Nichols did visit the Philipines with his wife, and while he was there he could have met with some of the al Qaeda people while he was there. The white hands come with the killing of Miguel Angel Blanco by ETA. He was a local Popular Party town city councilor in a small town. ETA hijacked him and said if in 48 hours ETA convicts were not moved near the basque country he would got killed. Aznar, the one who supported Iraq war said Nuts!, and Miguel was murdered.
The white hands were just a sign against terrorism. But they later voted socialists which party funded until two months ago the political branch of ETA giving 3M euros to each town governed by this party, before socialists saw they could win in the elections held two weeks ago.

Nope, he was embarrassed by the bill and wanted as little press as possible. He did use the occasion to promote the new earmark policy I just posted. I’d rather had him veto the damn thing even at the risk of pissing off both sides. If he really gets his reforms passed, I’ll let him slide, but no has stopped the pork train and many have tried.

This was the first real dramatic case in a long time that demonstrated how terrorists win.
Oh, sure, the Spanish government handled the bombings badly, cluelessly trying to blame “Basque separatists” but the reality is that the Spanish electorate then handed Al Qaeda the major coup of overthrowing a strong anti-terrorist government and forcing Spain’s permanent retreat in Iraq.
Not that we have much room to claim ourselves superior.
Of course the terrorists won again in the United States in 2006. They hadn’t even successfully struck here since 2001 but we still gave them a new, terrorist-friendly government.
I’m glad someone is remembering what they did.
In this depraved, spineless, age when the networks avoid even showing video from September 11, it’s more imperative than ever that we never forget.

Here goes: I just found my Applegate-Fairbairn combat folder (this version is made by Gerber) that I thought I had mis-placed. The blade is a dull as a butter knife and is showing a little rust. I have DMT diamond sharpening stones but am having a hell of a time getting a decent edge. I confess that I have little experience honing blades and this could have something to do with it. Any suggestions, books, other resources … ?

The socialist party used agit-prop to force the government to say who was responsible for the killing. Popular party headquarters were vandalized by this. Zapatero told there were islamists. The liberal radios said there were islamists. Neither of these ones had any proof of it, and just before they had been saing it was ETA. The police, told all the way to Aznar it was ETA. But, after the elections, the police said, it was not ETA.
As a result, a socialist government come in chair.

Obama said he believed future legislation could include reforms to make the budget process more transparent and trustworthy and rein in the use of earmarks.
“I believe as we move forward, we can come together around principles that prevent the abuse of earmarks,” he said in his speech a hour or so ago. Good idea, bad idea, could it work with the love both sides have for pork ?
“These principles begin with a simple concept: earmarks must have a legitimate and worthy public purpose.
He said they should all be aired on Congressional members websites in advance for comment, and earmarks for for-profit private companies should be subject to competitive bidding practices.”and:
House Democratic leaders announced two new measures to change the way earmarks are used. A 20-day review by the executive branch would be required, and earmarks for for-profit companies would require competitive bidding. “
Would think that a review of legislation by executive prior to passage might be construed as a separation of powers issue. Anybody?

OK, getting lots of comments about what you think about BHO, but what about the earmark reform idea I asked about that he floated ? We pretty much agree he whimped out on this budget bill, but I’d love your opinions on the idea’s for fixing the earmark issue in the future.
Not all earmarks are bad, but we have to come up with a plan to limit the porky ones. I think it’s one issue the right and left outside of Congress that we could agree needs attention.

Wow, never heard that one!
I love my car, which I bought in 2002. It works great, looks great, don’t have a single complaint about it.
I still have my 2000 car and will keep it until parts and repairs are too much. I really want a new one but, will have to wait for better times and a full time job. It was the first new car I ever had and the way things are going may be the last.

Hey O.R. - my dad once told me that if you bought a car that was properly manufactured - everyone occasionaly produces a lemon in the assembly line - and you take good care of it, it ought to last you at least 10 years.
I think (hope) razorbacker was simply using that as an analogy to my comment about age and experience.

My 2000 Ford Focus needed a new fuel pump last month (apparently, it was a recalled part and we were never notified)
So, I had the new fuel pump installed, at no cost to me, and I’m happily driving around in an ‘older’ car!

By the way. Regarding autos and longevity.
Change the lubricating and cooling fluids (all of them. Including transmission and differential fluids.)
Change belts and hoses.
Then don’t worry about mileage or age. Those simple steps will eliminate most all normal problems.

Not really any suggestions. I met Col. Appelgate shortly before his death, and he advised me not to get the Gerber, but wait and get the Boker manufactured knife. Not that that does you any good :-)
Hmmm. For the rust, I’d probably get some very fine emory paper. That should buff it out without marking up the blade too bad. If you had a straight buffing wheel, it might be even better, but you’d likely wind up with a blade that is too shiney. The emory paper should buff out the rust and not mar the finish much (the rust will have done some damage. The emory paper can take it off a little at a time and, thus, do less damage overall to the finish). Most of my knives are collectables, so Inever sharpen them (detracts from their book value, not that I’m likely to sell one of them). How did it get dull? Just sitting on a shelf shouldn’t dull the blade.
If you can’t get an edge with the stone you are using, you may be using too hard a stone. Use softer/coarser stones to put a good working edge on it (be careful of the finish, these stones can and will scratch up your blade, so use them with care) and then go to the harder stone to clean up the details and put the final edge on it.
With good steel (and Gerber should be that) it shouldn’t take that long to clean up. the only thing that comes to mind is that they mighthave tempered it too hard. That’ll take a bitch of an edge, and hold it, but once it is gone, it is a major effort to resharpen.

It does. Thanks for the suggestion. And I see the Boker has been making them, maybe I will upgrade. It got dull because I used it (obviously not for the use intended because (1) I am not in the armed forces, or (2) in jail) for everything under the sun: around the house, yard work, camping …etc.

That’ll work, but I’d hate to ditch a $100 knife if I could fix it. I used to would have sworn by Gerber, but they’ve not been particularly good for some time now. It is sad.
Couple of years ago, while off-roading, I found a brand new Gerber lockback lying beside the trail. I picked it up, wiped off the dust, and put it in my boot.
After several attempts to put a good edge on that thing, I realized that someone had not dropped that knife; they had pitched it away in frustration.

Something interesting to note about the memorial wreath-laying ceremony in Madrid today. I read the Spanish newspapers (which are generally very liberal)…..surprise….. and today they noted that the Socialist government in Madrid were notably absent from the ceremony. Socialists are disgusting no matter which country they “govern”.
