I've met Bill. He's an interesting guy. He gets it on pollution and the hidden costs to municipalities in public health costs. I don't know if he has the fund-raising juice state-wide to go up against John Sharp. But he's definitely a player.

The more interesting spectacle will be Rick and Kay Bailey kicking each other's guts out like two cats in an alley fight.

I think Bill does. He's raised the most so far. I mean, I live in Houston. I can say with conviction that he is one of the best mayors we have ever had. The two landslides he won were earned quite handily. I mean, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee actually thinks that he has a chance. I don't think they have said that about a Dem canidate in years.

What's the nuclear payload for a B-52? I was trying to figure out the total megatons for that video in a real world scenario. 48 MT each would make for a total of 720 MTs with 15 52s. Glad it's just for practice.

Of course all of those SAC AFBs were and probably pre-targeted with ICBMs.

Sweet! MITO is Minimum Interval Take Off. Thirty seconds between the bombers and tankers. You will notice that bomber six waggles a lot at 5:15 in the tape. Wake turbulence. We nearly lost a tanker to it in 1981 during a Giant Lance MITO exercise. It got whipped over to a 45 degree bank at 250 feet. Close thing. Ended up washing out level at 50 feet before it started climbing again.

To our Dear Leader Obama, and your intercessors Darwin and Satan...We know you are a vigilant reader of these late night threads, especially recently. Let our cry come unto thee. We hope for the following instances of change:

For those who have turned their hearts against you, we pray: open their hearts, and their wallets, and take some more taxes from them to pay for our health care. Being shiftless, we need it.

For those who have turned their faces from you, we pray -- turn their hate into love, and their (R) votes into (D), in ACORN and Diebold's name we pray.

For those whose penises shrivel at the mention of your name, we pray--well, not much can help them. Screw it.

And for Jimmah's cat, a most humble and devoted servant of yours, please attend to her slight litterbox aiming problem.

Various payloads. Depended on the mission. We could carry up to eight B-61s (a dial a yield nuke set that could deliver up 1.2 megaton- It is listed as a max yield of 1.7 MT, but we had a max of 1.2).

We could also carry up to 12 Short Range Attack Missiles on two rotary launchers (think of them as magazines in a .357 pistol). Two bomb bays, so a combination of 4 B-61s and six SRAMs was not unusual. We figured that with one bomber, we could kill 40 million people between Atlanta and Boston.

40 million people. So that would mean a 15 ship launch would, if all were successful, would be about 600 million people. Sobering to think about.

124 I Need A Bigger Gun  Sun, Oct 4, 2009 2:42:17am

A few final thoughts about Chicago not getting the 2016 Olympics:

1. I guess you could say this was a case of Obama's chickens coming home to roost. He's spent most of the year going around the world and saying that America sucks, and the rest of the world (at least the I.O.C., anyway) took him at his word, and figured they shouldn't award the Olympics to a country that sucks so much.

2. I would imagine that most of the people in this country that were glad that Chicago didn't get the Games were glad because they thought this was an attempt by Obama to make some of his cronies there a lot of money off of them. If the bid was being submitted by another city, such as Miami, New York, San Francisco, or just about anywhere else, the joy of his failure would have been diminished.

3. And of course, there was Michelle's "Hillary moment", when she said, during her pitch to the I.O.C., that she had sat in her father's lap and cheered on Olga and Nadia and Carl Lewis. This is interesting in that when Carl Lewis first competed in the Olympics (in 1984), Michelle was 20 years old...a bit old to be sitting in her father's lap, I would imagine.

Yup. We could pop out six Mushy Missiles (aka SRAMs) in about 30 seconds.

When I was at Sawyer (which is now closed) we had six bomber alert lines. Four were UI (urban industrial). Three of those were Warsaw Pact (AKA the Eastern European Heating Authority- haha! SAC humor!!) The fourth was a Moscow area C&C bird that had eight B-61s. One was a penetrator (12 SRAMs, designated for radar sites to punch a hole in Soviet Air Defense), and the last was a Strategic Reserve Force bird (motto: he who flees and fly away lives to fly another day!). Two of the post-strike bases were in Iran (Tabriz- and this was *after* the revolution), and the three Pact birds were scheduled to recover in Cyprus.

Interesting that the post strike base would be Iran. Sound like that would have required some kind of negotiations post strike. 6 ships out with 5 returns would account for one loss. I always thought the losses would be higher in that from my readings most of these strikes would have required a "one way commitment."

They were never suicide missions. The fuel allocations were tight, but sufficient to get the bombers to post-strike bases. Iran, Turkey, and Cyprus were popular destinations. The tankers, on the other hand, had much less secure post refueling capabilities.

Bleh blah. I watched the IOC speech by Michelle Obama. She failed by mentioning Carl Lewis. Not the end of the world though since they tend to talk too much. I understand that these are talking points from Michelle Malkin and Stop the ACLU blogs so with them that might mean this is a significant point of presidential history but in all honesty it doesn't. Just a foolish mistake. Don't look for any impeachment hearings due to this.

There's not much to pecan pie filling besides sugar and eggs. Both thicken as they cook. 3 eggs, a cup of corn syrup and maybe 2/3 cup of sugar seems to be about average; compare to see if your recipe departs from these proportions significantly.

More likely, it's either the wrong temperature or the wrong baking time. 350 F for an hour is typical, but you ought to check to make sure the center is firm to be certain it's done. Check your oven temperature, as well. And finally, here's a tip that will keep on giving: almost all recipes are developed with the assumption that the ingredients are at room temperature. Take your eggs, butter and any other refrigerated ingredients out of the 'fridge an hour or two ahead of time, so the oven doesn't have to bake off the cold.

Note that this tip should be ignored for crusts, which depend on chilled butter to make them work. Although frankly, good pie crusts can only be made with the help of Satan, so I usually just use those store-bought versions.

The Moral Inversion of Richard Goldstone

So now we can see how Richard Goldstone thinks he has preserved his judicial reputation while perpetrating a blood libel against Israel. He has produced a report which, as anticipated, finds that Israel committed all the ‘war crimes’ during Operation Cast Lead of which his Mission members had decided it was guilty before even starting their deliberations, along with the NGOs whose unremitting hostility and malice towards Israel and history of peddling Palestinian propaganda as fact did not deter the Mission from uncritically accepting their evidence as the truth, thus finding Hamas guilty of no crimes at all -- except one. That was, by an amazing coincidence, the one set of crimes it committed which the world was forced to acknowledge actually happened – the firing of rockets from Gaza into Israel with the sole intention of killing Israeli civilians. By referring to this en passant, devoting minimal attention to it in the course of his 570- page report the vast majority of which is devoted to allegations against Israel, he engineered the ‘even-handed’ headline he needed to maintain his credibility:

There is evidence that both Israeli and Palestinian forces committed war crimes in the recent Gaza conflict, the official UN report says.
With this cynical veneer, Goldstone does worse even than establish a moral equivalence between the instigators of genocidal violence and those who were attempting to defend themselves against it. He presents Israel, the victims of such aggression, as war criminals and the Palestinians, the actual instigators of terror, as its victims. This is not moral equivalence but moral inversion.
He acknowledges no such crimes by Hamas within Gaza itself -- not least against other Palestinians -- such as turning the entire population of Gaza into hostages by siting its rockets and terrorist infrastructure amongst that population and additionally using them as human shields.

re: #219 MandyManners

Of the countless distortions, errors and absurdities in this travesty of a report, the following jumped out at me from an initial reading.

1) The first error is in the title itself: HUMAN RIGHTS IN PALESTINE AND OTHEROCCUPIED ARAB TERRITORIES: Report of the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict

But Gaza is not occupied by Israel, as is quite clear from even a cursory look at the Hague Convention which lays down the criteria for occupation. For Goldstone to say that Gaza is still occupied demonstrates either an ignorance of international law quite remarkable for a professor of international law, or that he is signed up to the ideology which deliberately uses such mis-statements to delegitimise Israel.

2) Par 27: Goldstone describes Gaza as blockaded by Israel. He makes no mention of Gaza’s border with Egypt which Egypt keeps closed. Is Goldstone as ignorant of topography as he appears to be of international law? Unlikely, since he also states (par 8) that

the Mission sought and obtained the assistance of the Government of Egypt to enable it to enter the Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing.

3) Par 30: ‘The data provided by non-governmental sources with regard to the percentage of civilians among those killed are generally consistent and raise very serious concerns with regard to the way Israel conducted the military operations in Gaza.’

But Goldstone does not mention that Israel provided a detailed breakdown of the Palestinians killed in Gaza and stated that the vast majority of these were Hamas or other terror operatives. Even the UN eventually acknowledged that some 75 per cent of the dead in Gaza were Hamas terrorists.

Declaring Afghanistan a "war of necessity" was a way for Obama and other Democrats to attack George W. Bush for choosing, in their view unwisely, to wage war in Iraq. But now when it comes time to wage the "war of necessity" in the way that our carefully selected general recommends, it turns out not to be so necessary any more. Not when Democratic politicians and Democratic voters are shying away from it.

I saw that in the wiki link. I don't understand it either. All I can say is that in order to be a member of the UN - you have to have it in for Israel.

So, I can't get a job ( I have many skills) so I was thinking about selling my monster white seafood chowder at the flea market. Three bucks a cup. Your thoughts?

Successful businesses have started exactly like that: an idea and a good product. What have you got to lose? It could even be enjoyable - especially if you start making some serious money. Don't forgot the garlic-butter croutons or chips: delicious accompaniment and added profit.

“Congressman Rangel’s record of unpaid taxes, false financial disclosure reports and hidden assets has been unfolding for more than a year,” said Ken Boehm, chairman of the National Legal and Policy Center, a conservative ethics group that has filed several complaints against Rangel. “Speaker Pelosi has done nothing to remove him as Chairman from the House committee that writes the tax laws. Apparently, there is one set of laws for powerful Congressmen and another for everyone else.”

Speaking of scary sh*t.
It looks like the democrats are desperate to pass stealth health care "reform" without an official bill, and without any transparency. (remember those promises of transparency? - *memory hole*) According to this, it will be an attachment to another bill. So then the members who are in trouble can say they had "no idea..."

I smell desperation and unconstitutionality.

re: #233 albusteve

Declaring Afghanistan a "war of necessity" was a way for Obama and other Democrats to attack George W. Bush for choosing, in their view unwisely, to wage war in Iraq. But now when it comes time to wage the "war of necessity" in the way that our carefully selected general recommends, it turns out not to be so necessary any more. Not when Democratic politicians and Democratic voters are shying away from it.

I think the right is trying to make a issue about a possible troop increases before the General Petraeus has actually submitted a request.

No, I think the right is making intelligent projections of the possible future reactions of the left.

You see, that's how it's done. You "think," make "projections," look at "possibilities," you know, sort of the same way you make decisions on the next turn of a card in a poker game.

Help - Having trouble getting into my pants

Reply to: pers-358731723@craigslist.org

Hi

Look ladies, I have a problem. I have a date tonight with a woman who is probably way over my dating standards. I mean, she's a knockout and I'm... well... I'm a dreeb. I guess I have been playing around with Photoshop too much, but I did a little "fixing" to my picture, sent it to her and now she wants to meet at the Brown Palace tonight at 6:00pm.

My problem is, nothing is going right over here. I'm trying to get into a size 38 pants (I'm a 44), this "Just for Men" stuff must be "Just for Scientists" because I can't get the color to come out right and I accidently dumped a bottle of Fabarge for Men all over myself (can 401 Spray get that smell off of me?).

So, if ANY woman has ANY time to hurry over to my house and dress me, I would be in debt to you forever.

I am 31 years old, 36 inch waist, burnette hair, blue eyes, speak four languages, have a passport and private jet... shit... I can't help myself.

Just email me and I'll give you my address.

I saw an SNL clip from last night. There was an Obama bit. The guy doesn't sound at all like Obama.

Are there any good impersonators out there that have him down? Usually, by now in a president's term, comedians and impersonators are vying to be the iconic facsimile.

Who is best so far?

Got your email from last night. I don't see a a problem. Like any other blog, as long as there are links I'm sure people will be happy to have excerpts of their stuff reposted. You might need to get permission to repost things like pictures but I'm guessing most people wouldn't mind as long as the original blog is credited. I think it's a good idea.

Well- if they're your comments about garden tips, we'd just need your permission to repost them.

re: #320 Irish Rose

No. The idea was to have Killgore's garden tips cross posted as entries at the Cookbook blog since we're adding a gardening section to the book. I thought the blog might also serve as a place for some of Killgore's other tips besides the excellent essay he provided for Volume 2. I'm glad Killgore likes the idea, now it's up to Reine.

Sure, no problem but I don't think most people would find my comments very interesting. I think it would be better to take links that I find like this one and post them. Lot's of practical tips and spectacular pics. If you look at the amount of space they're using it's about the size of the average backyard. Most decent food/gardening blogs only post one or two new entries a week anyways so you wouldn't have to make a big time commitment to doing it.

That's why I'm looking to you to bring those to our attention. ;)

I'll talk to Reine about it some more- we'll probably just work off your comments here when we see them, or you could email one of us. Like I said to the two of you- gardening and cooking go together. But let's wait and see what she thinks- I'll be in touch.

This is an interesting read from Harry's Place:

Social action and the BNP

Over on our blog, Nothing British, we have written about “Soldiers off the Street” (SOTS), a new BNP front which claims to help homeless veterans by feeding, clothing and finding shelter for Britain’s vulnerable ex-servicemen and women. We have subsequently reported this organisation to the Charities Commission ad Trading Standards for failing to reveal its extremist connections.

SOTS is run by the husband and wife BNP team Bill and Marie Murray. As head of the BNP’s Welsh division Mr Murray is a very senior member of the party’s inner circle. His wife is a seasoned activist and during the European elections the pair were praised by the party’s central command for co-ordinating the delivery of over 30,000 leaflets. Mr Murray was singled out by one activist who saluted his indefatigability. Murray is seen in this video alongside Nick Griffin, saying that Winston Churchill would have embraced the BNP.

Just as with Islamist “charities” our central concern was for the public being duped into donating money to the bogus SOTS under illusion that it is neutral and non-political. We were concerned that money, intended for a noble cause, was actually in the hands of cadre of extremists who might seek to use the concerns of hard-working people and convert it into political capital.

Just like with extremists groups here in the US trying to feed off veterans' concerns, the BNP is trying to latch onto government resentment.

Mr. Rogers this morning on KCET visiting a fortune cookie factory. My kids didn't care, but I thought it was cool.

Just a note: it's easy to make your own fortune cookies at home. Recipes abound; the core of it is to bake thin disks, then fold them into their final shape just after they come out of the oven, while they're still warm. Great rainy day activity for kids; they get to write out their own messages.

Not so great for us diabetics, who need to sample cookies that are largely sugar as we go along, but it's a small price to pay.

If you're gonna win, you gotta pay. Chicago bid $4.8 billion against Rio's $12.4 billion. End of story. Almost three times the bribe and kickback potential.

You know:

1. We're not actually entitled to host the Olympics every damn time we think of it.
2. The U.S. has hosted the Olympics more than once in my lifetime.
3. The IOC are a bunch of crazy old corrupt facists. Who can tell what they'll do?
4. South America has never had a games.
5. OK, let Rio have it. They'll put on a hell of a party.
