Details of the study were published last week, ahead of International Women’s Day on Monday, in an attempt to highlight one of the most complicated issues facing Palestinian women.
The Women’s Affairs Center (WAC) study, Women and Inheritance, found 88 percent of those surveyed claimed to have been denied their inheritance. Around two thirds of those interviewed said they would not request aid to restore their legal rights.
SNIP“You can say it’s a matter of culture more than religion,” Diab Zayed, programs officer at the Palestinian Working Woman Society for Development (PWWSD) told The Media Line, noting that the problem exists in the West Bank as well as Gaza.
He explained that the family of a widow’s late husband would prefer to see inheritance pass to the deceased’s brothers and sons rather than the widow.
“Land is very important in the Palestinian community, and they don’t want the land to go to another family if the man dies,” Zayed said. “The [widowed] women might get an amount of money and that’s it.”
“There’s a lack of awareness among women,” he said. “They don’t even deal with it as part of their rights.”
The WAC highlighted several reasons why women in Gaza are reluctant to demand their inheritance: fear of losing their children, lack of awareness of how to approach legal aid organizations and pressure by family members to give up their rights.
PWWSD and several organizations are fighting to have property legally registered in women’s names, in order to prevent situations in which women are pressured to give up their rights.
Palestinian inheritance law follows Islamic law, which stipulates that women are only entitled to half the inheritance amount given to men.
For example, if a father bequeaths $1,000 in inheritance to two daughters and a son, then according to Islamic Law (Sharia), the son will receive $500 and the daughters $250 each.
If a woman is left widowed the inheritance money is by default shared between the children, the husband’s parents and his brothers, and involves a series of calculations dependent on each case’s circumstances.

“The Middle East remains the most repressive region when it comes to women’s rights but we have noticed some modest gains which have led to a cautious optimism in the fields of education, labor participation and vote participation,” said Sanja Kelly, author of the report.
Researchers in 18 countries in the Middle East and North Africa conducted hundreds of interviews with women to evaluate what progress, if any, women’s rights had made.
The report, published last week by US democracy watchdog Freedom House, found that Algeria, Kuwait and Jordan had taken large steps forward in improving women’s rights. In contrast however, Iraq, the Palestinian Territories and Yemen had fallen behind. Women in Tunisia enjoy the greatest freedoms of any women in the region, followed by their counterparts in Morocco, Algeria and Lebanon, the study found. In Kuwait, women now have the same political rights as men, and four women were elected to parliament in May for the first time in the country’s history.
But on average, only 28 percent of Middle Eastern women work or were “economically active,” the lowest rate in the world, even if some countries such as Qatar had much better rates.

Seriously, I would never ask such a question. The standard, set by my mother, is that you always defer to the older generation, ie, your matzo balls will never be as lovely as Aunt Gertrude's, no matter what the objective reality is.
Hence, nothing I cook will ever be as good as my husband's Aunt's-she being the cook in the home he grew up in. This is probably true, but for politeness' sake, it will be considered true regardless.
I have no idea what the correct answer is, once one has been asked the question.

It's international women's day?
That's like Mother's day. Just once a year?
Every day should be women's day. Just like every day should be mother's day.
There's been quite a bit of progress, but as usual, some of the usual suspects are up to their same old/same old:
Iran prevents an Iranian poet from attending Women's Day festivities in France.
The situation in Afghanistan remains tenuous.
Rights of women throughout the Middle East is a mixed bag and some countries like Saudi Arabia continue to treat women as second class citizens.
Some Palestinians see advancement of women's rights when they start assuming the role of revolutionaries and suicide bombers.

Shameless repost of mine from the other night about the meaning of radical feminism, for those who are interested:
the 'radical' only refers to the Latin radicalis "of roots". Radical Feminism seeks the source or root of women's oppression and identifies it as being the source of all oppression everywhere-- that is, that the oppression of women was the first sort of oppression in human history and is the model for all other forms of oppression.
It also locates the source or root of women's oppression in biology-- specifically, female sexuality and reproduction. It identifies the control of female sexuality and female reproductve life as central to the oppression of women. (this is not to deny that there are other forms of oppression, it just places the primary locus of the oppression of women as rooted there).
Consequently a radical feminist, at the very least, will believe that ensuring women's sexual and reproductive autonomy is central to the liberation of women.
Some will go further and argue that the oppression of women is 'worse' than all other kinds of oppression. I don't play that game; I'm not interested in grading who is oppressed more, and I'm opposed to oppression full stop, but that is a consequence of my being a humanist, not only a feminist.
But when we consider the world as a whole, and that women make up 51 percent of that world, and look at the condition of women worldwide, (which is also something a radical feminist is interested in, not merely women in the US, or western industrialised nations) there is no doubt that the oppression of women is more widespread than that of any other single group, and that's purely a consequence of population stats.

As much as it pains me to see the families of these soldiers have to put up with their crapulence, Westboro does have the right to protest - it is political speech and I would hope that the Courts do find accordingly.
Protests can be countered with counter-protests, which is often what has been done elsewhere. In the early twelfth century century the Virgin had been the supreme protectress of civilisation. She had taught a race of tough and ruthless barbarians the virtues of tenderness and compassion. The great cathedrals of the Middle Ages were her dwelling places upon earth. In the Renaissance, while remaining the Queen of Heaven, she became also the human mother in whom everyone could recognise qualities of warmth and love and approachability...
The stabilising, comprehensive religions of the world, the religions which penetrate to every part of a man's being--in Egypt, India or China--gave the female principle of creation at least as much importance as the male, and wouldn't have taken seriously a philosophy that failed to include them both...It's a curious fact that the all-male religions have produced no religious imagery--in most cases have positively forbidden it. The great religious art of the world is deeply involved with the female principle.

There's also all sorts of domestic organizations in specific countries or in regions. You just have to use some googlefu to search them out.

Like for instance on the radio this am they had a panel on woman and farming. They had someone from the states and a couple of other women from Africa and Brazil that worked specifically on issues in their respective regions.
I learned a lot. I had no idea for instance that in Africa approxmately 80% of farmers are women. Similar stats in parts of SA as well.

sex-positive is a ridiculous expression. But I'm certainly sex-positive in the way they mean it. More on this (also repost)
you'll find all kinds of infighting among groups that call themselves radical feminists over what that term means and what strategies to adopt. Some of the wacko anti-porn agitators of the 80's would have called themselves radical feminists, but they were obsessed with controlling porn in the US, rather than, say, worrying about female circumscsion in africa and elsewhere. They also located the source of women's oppression in porn, which is laughable.
Anyway that Alison Jaggar book on Feminist Theories is an excellent basic primary on feminism.

Recent developments:
From its 1845 birth in Georgia as a haven for white Baptists who supported slavery, the SBC has had troubled relations with African Americans. For 150 years, by its own admission, it was hostile to black progress, often speaking in favor of Jim Crow laws. But in 1995, the Southern Baptists did an about-face, issuing a public apology for their history of bigotry and vowing to "eradicate racism in all its forms" from its ranks.
These days, the faith that was once proudly white now touts the fact that almost 20 percent of its congregations are predominantly black, Latino or Asian. Hundreds of minorities serve in leadership posts in its state conventions, seminaries and other organizations.

The infighting kind of annoys me when the real, established abuses, the non-metaphysical ones, are still very much in play. Example from the Amnesty study linked above:
In Nordic countries, for example, the use of violence or threats of violence determine the seriousness of rape rather than the violation of a woman's sexual autonomy. The report Case Closed: Rape and Human Rights in the Nordic Countries, documents one case in Finland where a man forced a woman to have sexual intercourse in the disabled toilet of a car park by banging her head against the wall and twisting her arm behind her back. In the prosecutor's opinion, this was not rape as the violence used was of slight degree. The man was convicted of coercion into sexual intercourse and sentenced to a conditional (suspended) seven-month prison term.

They will get out late in the afternoon (Perhaps after 5 PM) and it's a four hour drive home, so they are going to stay overnight at the Ronald McDonald House and leave for home in the morning.

re: #166 iceweasel
That's an overwhelming toughie, its probably 'good' for conflict tho'.
Well-- to build on Obdi's point about the infighting--
There's still an issue in the US where some people, especially in that 'sex positive' community, are focussing on issues that imo are of less import at best, and divert attention and resources from very serious issues at worst. When they don't lead to ignoring it altogether.
You'll find a lot of people working on the sex work issue who came out of that sex positive movement, and many of them are all about focussing more on the 'stopping the demonisation' of sex work -- but they're looking at college students working as strippers or escorts, phone sex, porn, whatever. They'll have some minor interest in the areas that affect others, and almost no interest in the worldwide sex slavery trade, or global issues about sex work, or even the realities about who sex workers are even here in the us. Slaves, pretty much.
That's my current problem with some of those people.

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. I am referring specifically to the dogma of Evangelical churches, and their teachings from the pulpit. Not the feelings of individual Evangelicals themselves. Although I would have to imagine that the majority of Evangelicals support their church's position on homosexuality, or the churches choosing to affirm their tolerance of homosexuality would not be forced to splinter off.
Well, I have spent many Sunday's in evangelical churches, none recently, so maybe things have changed. I NEVER once heard homosexuality talked about inside the hall, not once in all the years of Sundays. It just is not on the menu, it matters so little to Salvation (according to the Gospels).
Because some pastors are vocal about this does not mean that this is a part of sermons in other halls.
My biggest problem, and the one that should be on this thread, is the misogynistic tenor of Gospel Halls.

Everybody has heard the joke about the lawyer who used a quil and an ink bottle to get his client acquitted on a rape charge. He told the jury there was no such thing as rape, and proved it by having a witness try to put the quill in the bottle---which he manipulated so deftly that the witness finally gave up.

Illinois Democrat Lipinski Will Switch from Yes to No if Health Bill Lacks Stupak Amendment
Add Congressman Dan Lipinski of Illinois to the coalition of pro-life Democrats standing firmly with Bart Stupak in the fight over taxpayer-funding of abortion in the health care bill. Asked if the congressman is "open to voting for a health care bill that lacks the Stupak amendment," Lipinski's spokesman Nathaniel Zimmer replied in an email to THE WEEKLY STANDARD: "No. Congressman Lipinski will not vote for a health care bill that provides federal funding for abortion."
In addition to Stupak and Lipinski, Congressman Jim Oberstar of Minnesota has said that he will not vote for the health care bill if it lacks the Stupak amendment: "I will not vote for a health care bill that doesn't have the House abortion language in it," Oberstar told Congressional Quarterly on February 24.
What's interesting about the emphatic opposition of Stupak, Lipinski, and Oberstar is that they are all liberals who easily won reelection in 2008. That year, Stupak had a 90% liberal rating from Americans for Democratic Action and a 32-point margin of victory; Oberstar had an 80% ADA rating and a 36-point margin of victory; and Lipinski had a 90% ADA rating and a 52-point margin of victory.

I think it's perfectly possible to be 'sex-postiive' and still demonize certain kinds of sex, for example. Like, if a naive girl gets pressured into having sex by her much older boyfriend, one can demonize that interaction without taking agency away from girls that are not coerced into having sex.
The one point that very importantly is made from the 'sex-positive' movement, though, is that overall demonization of sex makes it less likely for women to report sexual crimes, given that they also have to admit having had sex. This point is not unique to the sex-positive people, though.
I think sex-positive is a great message, but I think it needs a lot of care not to wind up celebrating sex that is abusive.

well in fairness, here's the commentary from the author after relating that uplifting story:
That sounds like one of Cotton Mather's jokes, or the wisdom of somebody very much like him--somebody who has never had his arm bent up between his shoulderblades. re: #191 HelloDare
'STUPAK HAPPENS TO BE WRONG'.... Arguably the single biggest threat to health care reform is Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) and his dozen Democratic allies, who are threatening to kill the legislation over indirect, circuitous funding of abortion.
Efforts to work with Stupak are ongoing, but it's worth emphasizing a relevant detail: Stupak is just wrong about the underlying policy dispute. Whether he knows he's wrong, and he's just hoping to kill health care reform, is unclear. But the accuracy of Stupak's claims aren't in dispute: the facts aren't on his side.
ABC News did a nice job fact-checking Stupak's argument this week, and Slate's Tim Noah (a Monthly alum) published the definitive takedown a couple of days ago, explaining that some areas of the debate are open to interpretation and debate, but this isn't one of them: "Stupak happens to be wrong."
Ideally, this would be enough. Democratic leaders would explain the truth to Stupak and his allies, making the case on the merits -- the Senate compromise language, endorsed by center-right Dems who oppose abortion rights, already does what Stupak & Co. want, which is to prevent public funding of abortion.
But Stupak has been reluctant to listen to reason, and continues to make claims that simply fail to stand up to scrutiny. The new goal is to strike a related deal that would address Stupak's concerns in a separate-but-connected bill. That may or may not be enough.
If reform is going to pass, however, the votes are going to have to come from somewhere. Stupak claims to have a dozen "yes" votes in his pocket, all of whom will bolt and side with Republicans. Without them, Pelosi would need a dozen Blue Dogs who opposed reform in November to switch, which may prove too high a hurdle.
In the meantime, though, it's worth re-emphasizing reality -- Stupak's argument is factually in error. That will make negotiations with him more complicated -- lawmakers who stick to a mistake after it's been exposed as a mistake can be challenging to deal with -- but that's where we find ourselves.

This is an apartheid society, a bifurcated human race where one half has been systematically excised: mothers, wives, daughters are only empty vessels, the regrettable and disgusting physical function through which men must deign to be born.

Woman is the most superstitious animal beneath the moon. When a woman has a premonition that Tuesday will be a disaster, to which a man pays no heed, he will very likely lose his fortune then. This is not meant to be an occult or mystic remark. The female body is a vessel, and the universe drops its secrets into her far more quickly than it communicates them to the male.
-- Edward Dahlberg
What passes for woman's intuition is often nothing more than man's transparency.
