Avengers #25, ‘Enter… Dr. Doom’ (February 1966)

Arts • Views: 6,615

Tonight’s photo from the Lizard Collection is another Marvel Silver Age classic: Avengers #25, published in February 1966, set in the mythical Eastern European country of “Latveria.” The Avengers are all freaking out, but Dr. Doom, he’s cool.

The Lizard Collection’s copy is in outstanding condition, with white pages, bright inks, and a nearly perfect cover.

We're getting some of the key books graded by the CGC, and we'll decide what to do after we get a reliable idea of what it's all worth.

I'm liking Mickey Rorke's new look. He's gonna be in a lot of movies within the next ten years.

Mickey Rorke and Danny Trejo.

There's a really good documentary about him called Champion.

As busy as he is with all of his acting projects, he still has time to counsel and sponsor recovering drug addicts. And it's really cool that he and Edward Bunker first met in prison.

Trejo got his first movie role (in Runaway Train) when a guy he was sponsoring was working on the movie and freaked out by all of the drugs around him. Trejo came over to keep him from using again and he was asked to play a non-speaking role. Bunker recognized him and got him a bigger role. The story's more detailed than that and he tells it in the documentary.

For Mother's Day, my kids took me to eat a local burger-fries-and-pie place. We decided to eat on the patio (fewer witnesses that way). I made the mistake of pointing out the surveillance camera.

That was better than any dinner theater. I had never heard of "Rock-Paper-Spock" before. Have you? How about "Rock-Paper-You're a Loser"?

I won't even describe the dance routines.

The only bad part was that we didn't have a camera, for evidence.

re: #49 Querent

reine,
when is the deadline for the 3rd cookbook? i'll have to send in my 'Elven Waybread' cookie recipe.

(since i will have to bake another batch between now and BayCon)

Oh, I'm glad you asked.

If you email me a recipe I will keep it IN CASE there is a volume 3.

But there will be no volume 3 if Volume 2 doesn't sell. We've only sold 24 books thus far; we had sold more than twice that of Volume 1 by this time after it had been rolled out.

Anyhoo - there is a link at LGF for the cookbook, Reality Bites! - for anyone who is interested. Upper left, you'll see it.

We also will need someone with expertise in and access to InDesign or other publishing software.

And of course, we would need to ask Jaunte if he's interested in doing art for a Volume 3.

The biggest problem right now - Volume 2 isn't selling in the quantities we had hoped for.

It's priced LESS than Volume 1, and Jaunte's art is INSIDE as well as on the cover, and Cato wrote a special poem featuring favorite lizards, and then there is Killgore's Very Own Gardening Section, which is quite impressive.

Check it out!

I assume that if they're approaching the counter they want to check out. How about "Did you find everything you needed?"?

I am starting to spot the customers who should stay away from the U-scan all together. Any men in cowboy boots and women in high heels.

There is something ass-backward about the concept of doing a good job at the U-san station. You're doing a really good job when you are fixing all the problems that the customer is causing.

Really, this happened tonight, a customer was talking back to one of the U-scan stations. It would go "do you have any coupons?" and he answers "no dammit, I just want to pay..." I walked up behind him and suggested... "watch out for station 6, it's pretty sensitive to criticism... last week someone was arguing with it and suddenly the laser came whipping out from under the glass and... well... haven't seen that customer since..."

"The customer is always right" is one of the most maladaptive ideas ever farted out by the human mind.

Once upon a time, about 15 years ago, I worked at Office Depot. Everyone lived in perpetual fear of the District Manager, whose name was (I'm not making this up) Dee Mayo.

This guy espoused obsequious "customer service" ideas that would make your skin crawl. For example, he claimed that he once worked at a gas station that was robbed. According to his story, his co-worker was shot and killed by the robber. But, as the story went, he 'instinctively' THANKED the robber as he fled for coming in , because that's how dedicated to Good Customer Service he was.

He repeated this story ad nauseum, as though we were supposed to find it inspirational and exemplary. As it happens, I don't even know if "Dee Mayo" is still associated with Office Depot in any way, but nevertheless, it's a big reason why to this day I would rather set my balls on fire than give $1 to Office Depot.

I loved it and had no problems getting through it. The Yiddish Policeman's Union was pretty good too but I thought K&C was much better.

If you loved Kavalier and Clay, you'll probably also love Soon I Will Be Invincible.
It's much faster paced and has a lot of humor, and is just way cooler.
I've read it twice, and there aren't a lot of books I enjoy that much.
Some friends who usually don't like sci-fi/comic book stuff also really enjoyed it.
I just couldn't slog through the turgid prose of K&C.

Someone a night or two ago tried to insult me by pointing out that his karma/comment ratio was 2 to 1, whereas mine was NOT, therefore -- he had the higher ground, or something.

I was also called a "fixture".
Not sure what thatwas supposed to mean.

Karma doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. It really depends on who happens to on the thread at any given time, and for some reason, the political flavour of the thread swings back and forth.

Being a fixture just means you are well grounded.

Here's the latest hatchet job on Obama, filled with the kind of absurd smears that get people hurt.

You can read the first chapter online at Amazon. It's basically just rehashed info from the campaign carried to the extreme of guilt by association; no matter how far removed the association actually is from Obama, its most unsavory aspects are directly attributed to him.

The authors of the book clearly have no shame, going so far as to label Obama a "Manchurian president," as if her were a foreign interloper bent on bringing America to ruin. I'm afraid the authors and some of their teabag audience (which loves slobbering over this kind of raw red meat) actually may see political violence as a solution. It's currently #11 at Amazon. Not a promising sign with respect to the right returning to reality.

From Amazon:

Highlights of The Manchurian President:

*Obama's mysterious college years unearthed

He took classes, and chased after young women. Betcha anything!

*Shocking new details of Obama's relationship with Bill Ayers and other Weathermen terrorists

(Kee-rist.)

*Obama's ties to Islam and black liberation theology

(Please note, these are not the same thing, and in fact, one is often sort of seen as excluding the other.)

*Startling facts about Obama's eligibility to serve as president

(He's eligible. Say, what?)

*Obama's membership in a socialist party probed

(He never belonged to one, but now we've got you good and scared.)

*How Obama's "hope," "change" slogans stem from communist activism

(Well-known fact: no non-commie has ever used the word 'hope' in a political slogan. Or called for change.)

*Radical socalists involved in drafting stimulus bill, ObamaCare

(But since we think Olympia Snowe is a radical socialist, this is less scary than it sounds.)

*Communists, socialists and other radicals on team Obama, including an expose on Obama's top guns in the White House

(Obama has guns in the White House? I'd think you'd be in favor.)

*Never-before-revealed depth of Obama's relationship with ACORN

(He got to third base.)

It was harder to find and not as mainstream. I would typically find it at DU or Indymedia websites. There was the ever present Infowars and Alex Jones. DU has calmed down a lot but I'll still go to some Indymedia pages and shake my head. You know, like the folks that protested the Israeli GLBT film festival?

Oh, I know Indymedia of old. I do agree there was some total insanity out there about Bush.

But did a book accusing him of totally crazy shit ever make it to #12 on Amazon's bestseller all categories list?

I agree. Most of it was about the Iraq war. It wasn't so much about other issues like abortion because Roe v. Wade never budged. A lot of people that opposed the Iraq War supported the war in Afghanistan. One such person was Neil Young who stated so publicly on several occasions.

The tripe in the book is not unusual. Somebody actually publishing that amalgamation of lies, coincidences, facts taken out of context, unsubstantiated rumors, and guilt by association....now that is new.

Disclaimer; I have not read the book in question, but based on the positive review alone, it is a real piece of junk. If there is real justified criticism in there, I would be very surprised.

Whatever it is, it's the same reason that places Liberal Fascism, Liberty and Tyranny, and many Michelle Malkin's, Glenn Beck's and Ann Coulter's books #1 Amazon and NYT best-sellers.

I can't remember an equivalent book that had the same success on the Left. The closest ones were probably Gore's Assault on Reason and Greenwald's A Tragic Legacy, but these aren't exactly liberal red meat screeds. The strict equivalent would probably be Why We're Liberals, which didn't sell very well.

There's a culture of resentment on today's conservative Right (but not libertarian Right) that has no equivalent on the Left, period.

That would be a good move. Palin is definitely supportive of Israel.

If she could find it on a map, and no, no American president is all that supportive of Israel if they are from the oil patch.

The Dems want to build coalitions to contain Iran, and the Arabs see this as leverage against Israel. HOwever, teh Dems also need to beg to keep the oil flowing. The Dems are going to make things more close with the Arab on the street.

The GOP simply needs to beg to keep the oil flowing. Understand it is not about American oil, or American oil markets, it is about a global market, and even if we drilled all of coastal reserves, it would only make a small dent. The GOP is going with the sheik in his palace.

The only real answer is to get off of oil.

Also, honestly, Israel gets wiped out early as a climate loser. So Palin policies would guarantee the destruction of Israel.

In fact, to those who know anything about Israel, consider how dependent the country is on rains and the rainy season. Once those rains are disrupted and heat spikes up to 110 degrees for prolonged periods in the summer, what happens.

Couple that to loosing large portions of the coast - of a nation that is mostly coast and you get the picture.

The only "good" news is that the Arabs in the Gaza would feel the pinch first and hardest and surely attack as they fled inland.

Yeah no shit. Honestly, I am so sick and tired of the Pali propaganda.

It endlessly pisses me off how the Arab states, who are scared shitless over the Iranian nuclear program see UN conferences not as a way to pressure Iran, who will try to dominate them, but as a bank shot at Israel. One could imagine that they want to look blameless and try to force the US to bomb Iran.

Of course, in politics, almost nothing is done for moral reasons.

What I really want to know is why G-d thought is was necessary to see to it that we Jews always have awful neighbors. We couldn't get countries like Canada or Belgium for neighbors.

I do not like Obama and his many weaknesses. I do not like the fact that W. left this country so weakened that our options were so severely restricted. At the end of the day though, there are larger concerns. Because as I keep saying, none of it matters if we do not stop AGW.

One of them just linked to a blog called South Africa Sucks to an article called A White South Africa – What Went Wrong. Check out the racist blog roll over there. They even include a book roll which includes Douglas Reed:

Richard Thurlow noted that Reed was one of the first antisemitic writers to deny Hitler's persecution of the Jews. In a review of Reed's Lest We Regret written in 1943, George Orwell compared Reed's outlook to that of the Nazi Otto Strasser and the British fascist leader Oswald Mosley, stressing Reed's continuing denial of Nazi persecution of the Jews.

In the 1960's Reed was outspoken in his opposition to the decolonization of Africa, considering the Black Africans to be unable to govern themselves and needing prolonged colonial tutelage. In his "The Battle for Rhodesia" (1966) he explicitly compared decolonization to the above-mentioned appeasement of Hitler; he strongly supported Ian Smith's unilateral declaration of independence from the United Kingdom, arguing that Smith's Rhodesia had to be defended as "the last bulwark against the Third World War", just as Czechoslovakia should have been defended against Hitler in 1938.

Qt is a large, complex and very capable C++ library. It started off as a set of GUI components, but has grown to vast size over the years.

Mostly, it makes a programmer's life much simpler, but it has some unusual quirks - one of which I've been beating my head against for a solid day and a half. I finally solved the puzzle this morning - and like all such problems, the solution seems obvious now, but it sure as hell wasn't until I figured out what was going on.

I posted something on Facebook yesterday about Westboro Baptist... a lawyer friend of mine posted this in response....

It's obviously an act. I met Shirley Phelps Roper and some other Westboro folks when they came to protest my church in Chapel Hill over ten years ago. I was convinced at the time it was all shtick, and hearing Shirley in numerous radio interviews over the years since then confirmed my suspicion. Those people are more performance artists than anything else in my opinion. Their act is so absurd that I am always shocked that anyone takes them seriously, although apparently some do. They're laughing at us I am sure.

Was the first take like that about them I've ever seen.

Agree completely, and in addition, real estate inventory is actually a liability on their books, as opposed to an asset. It's toxic for a bank to repo houses in an economy where they can't sell. Give them a glimmer that they may see some form of payment at some point in the future and they're likely to be very interested...

Lebanon has claimed the latest victory in the continuing battle with Israel over which country can make the largest serving of hummus.

Some 300 chefs set the new record, creating a huge 10-tonne vat of the chickpea-based dip in Fanar.

That more than doubles the previous record of about four tonnes, set in January by cooks in the Israeli-Arab town of Abu Ghosh near Jerusalem.

Happy Mother's Day to all the ladies who are moms!

From my email today:

MOTHERS

Real Mothers don't eat quiche;
They don't have time to make it.

Real Mothers know that their kitchen utensils
Are probably in the sandbox.

Real Mothers often have sticky floors,
Filthy ovens and happy kids.

Real Mothers know that dried play dough
Doesn't come out of carpets.

Real Mothers don't want to know what
The vacuum just sucked up.......

Real Mothers sometimes ask 'Why me?'
And get their answer when a little
Voice says, 'Because I love you best.'

Real Mothers know that a child's growth
Is not measured by height or years or grade...
It is marked by the progression of Mommy to Mom to Mother.....

The Images of Mother

4 YEARS OF AGE - My Mommy can do anything!

8 YEARS OF AGE - My Mom knows a lot! A whole lot!

12 YEARS OF AGE - My Mother doesn't know everything!

14 YEARS OF AGE - My Mother? She wouldn't have a clue.
.
16 YEARS OF AGE - Mother? She's so five minutes ago.

18 YEARS OF AGE - That old woman? She's way out of date!

25 YEARS OF AGE - Well, she might know a little bit about it!

35 YEARS OF AGE - Before we decide, let's get Mom's opinion.

45 YEARS OF AGE - Wonder what Mom would have thought about it?

65 YEARS OF AGE - Wish I could talk it over with Mom.

The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure she carries, or the way she combs her hair

The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes,
Because that is the doorway to her heart,
The place where love resides.
The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole,
But true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul.
It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she
Shows, and the beauty of a woman with passing years only grows!

There does not appear to be any outward sign of a championship at present, and considering the interest that hockey matches now elicit, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held annually by the winning club."

So mused Lord Stanley of Preston in 1892, at a sports banquet in Ottawa. The following year Canada's governor-general was true to his word, purchasing a silver bowl for $50 and naming it the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. Hockey folks went with a less formal designation, the Stanley Cup.

The first winner was a Montreal team that finished atop the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada, considered the best league going at the time. But in its early years, the prize was not exclusive to one hockey league, nor was it meant to be. It was a challenge cup, changing hands in much the same way as a boxing title. Contenders issued challenges, and the champions held the Cup for as long as they could fend off all comers. Independent trustees ensured that legitimate challenges were met on a regular basis.

In later years, as professionalism swept the game, it was accepted that the Stanley Cup could not remain exclusive to amateur teams. The Stanley Cup officially turned pro in 1910, when the National Hockey Association took possession of it. But it was not until 1926 that the National Hockey League emerged indisputably as the top league in North America, effectively taking control of the Cup. That control was formalized in an agreement signed with the Cup trustees in 1947.

My mom lives two hours away, I was up there on Friday so was able to get my "Mother's Day" on with her (without all the siblings around [who are up there today])...

This is a great Mother's Day in my little corner of the Universe. On Thursday the Oncologist released Mom from tests and stuff indefinitely. Told her he was sick of seeing her because she's not sick anymore.

So, she doesn't have to even do blood tests anymore unless she notices any symptoms.

Yay, us.

Several friends of mine lost their Mothers last year. This will be a sad day for them.

I'm very happy about your news, FBV. That is very cool news. I lost my Dad 6 years ago, but my mom is still around, driving me nuts, and I wouldn't change that for the world. The show "The Middle" had a great "Mother's Day" episode last week.

Patricia Heaton's idea for the episode.

Bottom line? Many mothers would love an entire day where they were just left alone.

Never occurred to me. Her dream Mother's Day... No breakfast in bed, no cheesy gifts, no nothing... wake up in the morning, husband and the kids left the house clean from the night before... and left the house, come home at ten pm on that night.

Makes sense if you think about it.

I remember watching my grandmother and my mom working very hard on Mother's Day, trying to clean up our loving gestures.

We get that on a daily basis at our house. The little dog usually sleeps behind my knees (it's warm there don't you know, and I'm a side sleeper). Then the 9 year old comes in and snuggles in between us, then the big dog comes in because he has a bladder the size of a thimble and needs to GO! RIGHT! NOW! and jumps on the bed to let us know as much.

You couldn't do anything worse than has already been done to the cup over the years...

Strange Misadventures of the Stanley Cup

What single object is the world's most famous champagne cup, potato chip dish and dog-food bowl, while doubling on occasion as a baptismal font?

It's the Stanley Cup.

The Stanley Cup has partied longer and harder than Ozzy Osbourne over its 109-year reign as hockey's Holy Grail. In a tradition unique in professional sports, every player on the championship team gets at least 24 hours to do virtually whatever he wishes with old Stan.

The cup has visited the White House and Lenin's tomb. It's also visited churches, bars, and strip clubs. It's been to the top of mountains and the bottoms of pools. It's been strapped to a Harley, a dog sled, and a golf cart. And along the way, it's been kissed, hugged, and admired by countless millions. Many, undoubtedly, are not hockey fans. They wait on line for more than an hour simply to enjoy a moment in awe of Stanley's grandeur.

This is what the best in the NHL fight for each year: a 35-pound, 3-foot-high polished silver trophy with five removable rings at the base. Each one lists 13 teams and their players, which remain on the cup for 64 years. The older rings are retired and on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

‘Yes, You Can Sleep With the Stanley Cup’

After the winning team takes their victory lap, the Stanley Cup really begins its travels, clocking more than 100,000 miles a year, raising millions of dollars for charity and and acting as hockey's foremost celebrity.

Not that this helps you now, but have you thought of calling the adult education course people (?) in your area? Maybe you're not the only one who wants to learn. If they get enough folks, they may offer a course.

The only Spanish sentence I know is "Donde esta la tortuga."

Though it's pretty amazing how much I can figure out when I'm reading it just from knowing some French. I seem to be able to get the general idea of whats being talked about.

I know someone who makes there own moonshine around here. He has the parts of the still hidden all around his property. LOL

I saw a documentary on PBS years ago on making cocaine. They were the first to film the process from coca leaves to the finished product which took place somewhere in the jungles of Columbia. . It was very interesting to watch. There were guys walking around with assault rifles along with the guys making the cocaine.

Twice this week I have been served beef burritos by mistake. Once in a Mexican restaurant, once at Taco Bell.

Took a bite of the Taco Bell one... had to open the car door to spit it out... the poor folks behind me... it looked like I was selling Buicks.

The texture was soooo disgusting.

Twice in one week. Hasn't happened to me in five years, then twice in one week.

A swat team in Columbia Washington executes a narcotics search warrant and ends up shooting both of the family dogs, a pitmix and a corgi. In front of a seven year old child, yet. All they found was a misdemeanor amount of marijuana, but now to cover their asses they have charged the parents with "Child Endangerment."

So smoking pot in your own house is endangering your children but the police storming your house and firing seven rounds with the kid present somehow is not?

Vandals mar new pedestrian bridge in Detroit

Less than a day after it opened, the Mexicantown Bagley Avenue Pedestrian Bridge was vandalized, Michigan Department of Transportation officials said.

Numerous individuals have "tagged" the $5 million bridge with spray paint and used knives to carve into a wooden bench in the middle of the span. Others signed their names with pens and magic markers on the bench, officials said.

In fact, an MDOT employee's video camera caught one woman as she used a colored pen to scrawl on a bench in the middle of the 400-foot-long bridge.

"Yes, it was me," said Oneita Jackson, a copy editor at the Detroit Free Press and author of Sunday's "O Street" blog.

"I did it. If you see a person with a green pen ... dressed in black slacks and a red top, that's me. I was excited about the event and wanted to put my name on it."

Jackson eventually put away the marker and said "Oh, I guess I shouldn't be doing this," the tape showed. As a blogger, she has written about her efforts as a mom to raise her 16-year-old son and encourage citizens to be more patient and civil.

Wonderful example to her kids.

CHINA, IRAN, AND NORTH KOREA: A TRIANGULAR STRATEGIC ALLIANCE

While the international community is facing a nuclear stalemate with Iran and North Korea, China is increasingly emerging as a Great Wall in blocking the path towards sanctions and peaceful resolution of the Iranian nuclear crisis and denuclearizaton of the Korean Peninsula. While much recent literature has been written on the deleterious effects of a regional nuclear arms race should Iran become a nuclear power, there has been relatively little effort to explore why China persistently defends Iran by blocking or watering down UNSC sanctions and on the strategic partnership between Iran and North Korea in missile and nuclear collaboration. This paper explores the triangular strategic alliance between China, Iran, and North Korea and the attendant negative spill-over that poses a threat to East Asia and Middle East regional stability.

Really? Good mom and pop taco stands?

Good mom and pop carry-out burrito joints, more specifically. To afford Bucktown with a family, we bought a place just north of North&Milwaukee, close to a fairly dense Mexican/other Latino (i assume mostly Mexican but i never cared enough to ask) stretch of blocks. Great part of town. Great character, very safe for the price. The mexican community on the north side of Bucktown is fantastic group of people.

Had 3 or 4 joints within a few blocks where the clientele was 95% Mexican...i judged the food by the clientele and was never disappointed!

Here's the most interesting part of the Awlaki article, for me at least:

There are two conventional narratives of Mr. Awlaki’s path to jihad. The first is his own: He was a nonviolent moderate until the United States attacked Muslims openly in Afghanistan and Iraq, covertly in Pakistan and Yemen, and even at home, by making targets of Muslims for raids and arrests. He merely followed the religious obligation to defend his faith, he said.

[...]

A contrasting version of Mr. Awlaki’s story, explored though never confirmed by the national Sept. 11 commission, maintains that he was a secret agent of Al Qaeda starting well before the attacks, when three of the hijackers turned up at his mosques. By this account, all that has changed since then is that Mr. Awlaki has stopped hiding his true views.

What a shocking allegation! The media's favorite Muslim love-puppet, a liar from the beginning? It just can't be, can it?

Gee, why have I no trouble believing it could?

And the guy with the plans for the new mosque in New York, the one who bids us "understand the terrorists" and calls on Amreeka to apologize to the Muslim world, could it be he's the same?

It could.

Today it sucks more, but it sucked before.

Sorry, I missed your post.
I'm recalling a vibrant Detroit of decades ago and thus have some fond memories. Your see, I go back to a time when I can recall watching Hank Greenburg from the stands many times. But, you're right, their woes can't be solely blamed on the economy.

Next time you go to a restaurant, look in at the cooking line. Peeking out from under the vent hood will be nozzles. There is a liquid chemical system that is formulated to turn to a foam when it hits grease. There is a "remote" control kind of behind the vents. The system has to be given a test run and cleaned every 6 months to make sure it works as designed. So I'm in at least one if not two restraunts a day!

So who will be Florida's new governor when Crist departs? Take a look at this creep.

[Link: thinkprogress.org...]

Just as his attack group seemingly disappeared from the public discourse, [Rick] Scott launched a new effort: to become the next Republican Governor of Florida. Scott’s website already seems to have difficulty distancing himself from his shady business dealings. Scott neglects to mention his disgraced business history, instead portraying himself as a “conservative outsider.” His website directs visitors to send campaign contributions to the same office as his private investment firm. In the past, his firm has invested heavily in technology firms instrumental in helping repressive regimes in Saudi Arabia and Iran.

As ThinkProgress has reported, before Scott entered politics, he made a career out of buying up hospitals and downsizing them for profit. But his quest for creating the “McDonald’s Of Health Care” ended abruptly in shame. As detailed in our report, not only was Scott forced to resign from his HCA corporation after paying $1.7 billion in penalties for the largest healthcare fraud settlement in history, much of his exploitation of hospitals actually occurred in Florida.

Guess all those scary Mexicans aren't coming over the border and committing crimes after all:

From az central.com

Assistant Police Chief Roy Bermudez shakes his head and smiles when he hears politicians and pundits declaring that Mexican cartel violence is overrunning his Arizona border town.

"We have not, thank God, witnessed any spillover violence from Mexico," Bermudez says emphatically. "You can look at the crime stats. I think Nogales, Arizona, is one of the safest places to live in all of America."

document Republic's Sunday front page

FBI Uniform Crime Reports and statistics provided by police agencies, in fact, show that the crime rates in Nogales, Douglas, Yuma and other Arizona border towns have remained essentially flat for the past decade, even as drug-related violence has spiraled out of control on the other side of the international line. Statewide, rates of violent crime also are down.

While smugglers have become more aggressive in their encounters with authorities, as evidenced by the shooting of a Pinal County deputy on Friday, allegedly by illegal-immigrant drug runners, they do not routinely target residents of border towns.

Apparently once again Obama is caving into the like of Limbaugh, Beck, Guiliani et al.

"I think we have to give serious consideration to at least modifying that public-safety exception [to the Miranda protections]. And that's one of the things that I think we're going to be reaching out to Congress, to come up with a proposal that is both constitutional, but that is also relevant to our times and the threats that we now face."

So do you think they'll shut up now about how Obama is actually on the side of the terrorists?

re: #633 Cato the Elder

He got the money selling Afghan poppies on street corners.

That firefighter is Tim Brown and his brother started a website called thebravest.com. They posted his 9-11 story there.

On the morning of Sept. 11th, Tim Brown (one of the brothers who owns theBravest.com, Inc) had recently arrived at his office. Tim was working in a year and half long detail from FDNY’s Res3cue to the NYC Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) located in 7 World Trade, when the first plane struck the World Trade Center tower. He immediately responded to the command post set up in the lobby of WTC Tower One. After the 2nd plane struck, he was directed to WTC Tower Two. There he attempted to set up and maintain some type of command structure in the chaos of the lobby.

While this was going on, Chris was at home on a day off from the firehouse, watching the events of that horrific morning unfold live on international news. Chris was unable to reach his brother, but he knew Tim's office was right next door to the WTC towers, and he knew his brother would be right there. He also knew from his brother's past experiences and his brother’s job’s responsibilities, that Tim would put himself in the towers, right in the thick of it. It wasn't an easy thing for Chris to watch, as the first tower collapsed and the news agencies spoke of all the people we'd just lost, all the firefighters and rescue personnel we'd just lost...

Just before the first collapse, Tim had exited the lobby of Tower 2 and gone across the street to gather up an EMS crew to assist the rescue efforts in the lobby of that tower. He was just re-entering the lobby with EMS when he heard the rumble and felt the earth move. Instinctively, he knew what was happening. He and the EMS crew scattered.

Chris sat at home, watching, as WTC Tower Two fell to the ground. He tried to call his brother, his best friend, the other half of theBravest.com. He tried to log on to theBravest.com for any information about what was really going on down there. But all internet connections in the area had gone down, including theBravest.com's servers. All he could do was watch, and pray.

Guess all those scary Mexicans aren't coming over the border and committing crimes after all:

From az central.com

And guess what? The Arizona rancher killed in Southern Arizona may not have been an illegal Mexican immigrant after all!

[Link: azstarnet.com...]

The killing of a Southern Arizona rancher that sparked an outcry to secure the border was not random, and investigators are focusing on a suspect in the United States, the Arizona Daily Star has learned.
...
They said Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever is investigating a person in the United States, not in Mexico, in connection with the shooting.

Yeah, those are considered temporary positions. But the fact remains that there were 233K private sector jobs added in April - the most since 2006 and the biggest uptick since 1983. They also revised the numbers for February and March upwards 90K. So that's basically lets say 400K jobs added in 3 months, as opposed to the economy shedding over 600K jobs a month just a year ago.

The uptick in the unemployment rate was primarily due to discouraged workers trying to re-enter the job market. Remember, the unemployment rate reflects the amount of people who are actively looking for work and can't find a job.

What's this about more jobs? CEOs have decided they don't want to give anyone jobs:

[Link: blogs.hbr.org...]

"They've decided that we've touched bottom, or they wouldn't be talking to me," he said. "They're starting to think about growing their businesses again." Welcome news, but not what followed.

"But boy, I don't see employment coming back, not for years. My clients were amazed by how much productivity they could squeeze out of their people in the downturn. They're not going to start hiring again — well, maybe temps or contract workers, but not regular, full-time employees." As if to punctuate the thought he added, chillingly, "In fact, the CEOs are mad at their middle managers for not having eliminated more jobs earlier."

Just so no one thinks I'm drinking any kool-aid, the "real" unemployment number is probably closer to 16%, and when you factor in the under-employed, it's more like 23%. It is what it is - you can't expect 50 years of free-wheelin' unrestricted partying on one big credit card to be sorted out in a couple of years time and with one stimulus package. We're going to see a lot more pain before the picture gets better.

Now, having said that, I will also add that, clearly, Obama can't win either way - if the market goes up and economic indicators show improvement, according to the right, it's in spite of Obama and would've happened anyway... if the market crashes and leading indicators show a drop, well, then it's obviously all his fault.

Yes, George Bush did SUCH wonders to our economy! Amazing economic growth under his Presidency. Wow you are really good for a laugh. Fucking incredible that you can be fed such tripe and keep going back for more, and more and more.

Let me ask you this, economically under the Bush Presidency how did you fare? Did your real wage growth outpace inflation?

Mine did.

Tea party wins victory in Utah as incumbent GOP senator loses bid for nomination

"That the Tea Party would consider Bob Bennett -- one of the most conservative members of the U.S. Senate -- too liberal just goes to show how extreme the Tea Party is," Timothy M. If there was any question before, there should now be no doubt that the Republican leadership has handed the reins to the Tea Party."

re: #707 HoosierHoops

Do you work in Economics? I know you work downtown NY..What do you think about the 1000 point drop the other day? I was at home blogging in real time going I've never seen anything like this in my life...Now Fox is touting a huge conspiracy theory..As usual jumping the Shark for viewership

I was at the NYSE watching it unfold. There's no conspiracy other than the fact that the Banksters were allowed to completely hijack the capital markets with high frequency trading. On any given day at the NYSE, 60% of volume is made up of HFT, and of that 60% the majority will be from less than 5 firms. They've successfully forced out regular market makers in securities on every exchange. So all that is left are the robots. And when they all decide to pull their bids at the same time (which is exactly what happened) the market crashes.

Now, the NYSE will have you believe that they offer better protections against this sort of thing because they have human Direct Market Makers on the floor. Except with Regulation NMS, they are effectively useless. When the NYSE DMM's stepped in during the free-fall and briefly paused trading on affected securities, the NYSE systems will stop responding to requests for quotes from automated trading systems. Those systems then simply proceed to route their order flow to any other trading facility that is still quoting. And that is exactly what happened. All the order flow simply bypassed the NYSE and went to Arca, NASDAQ and BATS which simply kept gapping their quotes lower and lower and lower as the frenzy continued.

I can answer that! During the bush years, my salary went up (between 2002 and 2008, anyway) about 12% - one bump of 3%, and two bumps of 2% and 4% - but total salary difference was 12%. Since 2009, my salary's gone up 20% (15% for taking a new job in September, and an additional 5% last week)...

728 drcordell  Sun, May 9, 2010 9:37:06am

At the end of the day, what needs to happen in my opinion is a moratorium on HFT. That, or all purely electronic markets need to implement some sort of Liquidity Replenishment Point (LRP) system similar to that at the NYSE. Because right now, even if the NASDAQ and NYSE paused trading in a freefalling stock to allow a human to aggregate interest and properly price it, the frenzy would not be stopped. All it takes is a single Alternative Execution Facility such as BATS to continue trading and the panic continues.

And ultimately, the NYSE is a chief culprit in the problem. They have actively solicited HFT order flow through their use of rebates for "supplemental liquidity providers." In essence, they make it profitable for large banks such as Goldman to simply churn as much order flow as they can through the NYSE, even if the trades are profiting .01 cent each. Because they offer a rebate that discounts the NYSE's normal trading fees, this becomes profitable. The NYSE claims this "adds liquidity" to the markets, which technically is true. Except it's only there when the huge banks are able to make a profit by essentially taxing actual investors trying to accumulate positions in a stock. When all of the HFT robots decide to head for the exits and pull their quotes, you get what happened Thursday.

Sort of a "world's tallest midget" type deal.

But there's way around any future drop in the dollar - you could go to cash, and switch it over to an other currency that's presently being beaten up, and if you expect it to rebound against the dollar in the next several years, you'd be doing good. Like, for instance, the Euro might actually get even with the dollar in the next year or so - but rebound from there significantly as the dollar faces the challenges it's sure to face. If you bought Euros with your dollars when they're at parity, then wait till the Euro goes back up to 1.30-1.50 to switch back, you'd be up a substantial amount.

It's not a "conspiracy" because the markets functioned exactly how they have been designed to function for the past several years. The fact that this entire thing was blamed on a "fat finger" is somebody (not sure who) trying to convince people that there's nothing wrong with the current system.

The banks don't want the average investor to realize that the capital markets have essentially become a giant casino, with stocks instead of colored chips. When it's algorithmic computers generating 60% of the daily volume, churning stocks for a rebate no matter which way the market is trading, fundamentals become irrelevant.

Actual investors attempting to legitimately purchase a stock they believe is a good long-term investment are essentially nickel and dimed by the algos who repeatedly jump ahead of them to purchase shares, and then sell them for .01 cent higher (if not more).

Regardless of what happens with the economy, expect the GOP to run on the god, gays, and fetuses platform. There will most certainly also be lots of yapping about terrorism/security, largely of the bullshit variety. That's all they got and they've demonstrated that it's their old playbook anyway.

A bad economy will contribute (as ever) to anti-incumbent sentiment. This will mean dem losses no matter what.

The teabaggers are mad as hell but also ignorant as hell, so it's hard to say what events in the real world will affect their 'movement'. Most of them believe (incorrectly) that their taxes have gone up, after all. And we know that a not-unsizeable portion of them are, quite simply, motivated by Fear of a Barack Planet: they are afraid of/hate the black muslim kenyan in the WH.

Consequently, the GOP's best electoral hope (in terms of harnassing the power of the teabag) is to encourage them to remain angry and scared.

Lefty Matthew Yglesias blogger posts about left vs right on economics...

The Left and Economics

According to Zeljka Buturovic and Dan Klein, people who self-identify as “progressive” have low levels of economic knowledge whereas those who self-identify as “libertarian” or “very conservative” rank very highly. For reasons suggested by Tyler Cowen, I think that conclusion is nonsense. But I do think they have the goods on the fact that people who self-identify with the left have some trouble grasping the interplay of prices and supply restrictions. Todd Zywicky pulls out these facts:

—67% of self-described Progressives believe that restrictions on housing development (i.e., regulations that reduce the supply of housing) do not make housing less affordable.
—51% believe that mandatory licensing of professionals (i.e., reducing the supply of professionals) doesn’t increase the cost of professional services.
—Perhaps most amazing, 79% of self-described Progressive believe that rent control (i.e., price controls) does not lead to housing shortages.

Lefty Matthew Yglesias blogger posts about left vs right on economics...

The Left and Economics

You probably should have read the rest of that:

Zywicki, trying to make mountains out of molehills, calls the results “startling.” Speaking as someone who doesn’t believe any of those things and who actually writes on two of these issues frequently, I’m not even slightly surprised. I find the situation unfortunate, which is one reason I write on these topics. He then gets sarcastic and says “Apparently the existence of a ‘consensus’ among trained scholars on certain policy issues is less important on some issues than others.”

As best I can tell, his argument is that because many rank-and-file progressives have mistaken ideas about economics, it’s okay for conservatives to have wrong ideas about climate science. But I don’t understand why anyone would think that. It’s important for people to have the right ideas! Inability to see that supply-restrictions on housing raise the price of housing is a big problem. Inability to see that carbon dioxide emissions are leading to ecological catastrophe is a big problem. The good news about progressives is that actual policymaking in, for example, the Obama administration is not based on elementary errors of economic policy. Larry Summers, Peter Orszag, Tim Geithner and their key deputies all understand the situation perfectly well as do leading progressive political commentators like Paul Krugman. Unfortunately, the situation with climate science and the right is by no means parallel in this regard.

There's been a fair amount of speculation that the Tea Party movement will dissolve once the economy turns around and they all have jobs to go to.
