Inhofe: Soldiers Won’t Fight for Gay Comrades

Wingnuts • Views: 2,690

Sen. James Inhofe talks with Bryan Fischer of Donald Wildmon’s American Family Association (previously featured at LGF for advocating that Muslims be banned from the US military).

In addition to being an old school theocrat and climate change denier, Sen. Inhofe wants to protect the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy, because he’s concerned that soldiers won’t want to fight for fellow soldiers if they’re gay.

Soldiers in Inhofe’s America - bravely putting their lives on the line for their fellow Americans. Well, the ones that ain’t gay. Sheesh.

That’s the outrageous outrage of the day.

6 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Thu, May 13, 2010 1:55:41pm

All of them? That’s a lot of people to be speaking for with one sentence.

Oh, it can be done, but usually it’s a bit more obvious than this.

Try:

“My neighbors do not wish a child molester to move in.” Pretty safe there.

“Shoppers love free samples.” Never found a shopper that disagreed.

I’m sure there is at least one soldier for whom this is true, and at least one for whom it is not.

Fill the military branches up with nothing but atheists, then they’ll have nothing to worry about and no one to cover, because apparently there are no atheists in any fox holes.

Somewhere right now there is a homosexual soldier giving up his life defending Senator Inhofe’s right to utter such remarkably vapid idiocy.

because he’s concerned that soldiers won’t want to fight for fellow soldiers if they’re gay.

Well that’s untrue. My husband knew who was gay in his troop (there weren’t many). So did others. It never mattered one iota.

Funny name, American Family Association, since the American Way is letting everyone who is eligible serve their country.

Now you have…”Inhofe was born in Des Moines, Iowa and moved with his family to Tulsa, Oklahoma, when he was a child. He was a member of the Class of 1953 at Tulsa Central High School,[1] and served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1958.[2][3]”

16 Gus  Thu, May 13, 2010 1:59:15pm

I’m curious. Inhofe’s biography states that he was in the Army from 1957 to 1958 or one year. That seems like a rather short stint. According to other sources in addition to only serving one year he never made rank above private and never left US soil.

17 researchok  Thu, May 13, 2010 1:59:29pm

re: #8 albusteve

He’s a politician- he thinks everyone is dumber than he is.

Fact is, most who serve are a lot smarter. DADT isn’t something they spend a whole lot of time on. They have more important issues to deal with.

Inhofe would be a lot more credible if he talked about soldier pay, benefits and health care.

18 tradewind  Thu, May 13, 2010 2:00:06pm

Maybe it’s naivete on my part, but I have a hard time believing that even the most die-hard homophobe would use that as a reason to fail to defend a fellow soldier.
Has Inhofe never seen M.A.S.H.?
Even Ferret Face Burns would never have left Klinger in the lurch.

Inhofe has no clue. The ONLY objection that holds any water at all is that sexual bonds can come into conflict with unit cohesion. This is a possibility both across gender lines and within them. Since the military has managed fairly well to cope with the hazard when men and women serve together, it ought to be able to cope fairly well with the same hazard when men and men serve together.

The acid test would be to see how things went if we had men and women share shower and toilet facilities, but maybe we don’t need to push our luck before giving the proposed new policy a try.

If you want to arrange that no one is sexually attracted to anyone else in the same unit, and if you assume that most soldiers of whatever orientation are fairly likely to find a random young and healthy person of their favored sex attractive, then military units including homosexuals, to achieve the no-attraction goal, would be limited to two people: one gay guy and one lesbian woman.

We don’t utterly separate men and women, and it’s worked out fairly well. The women do sometimes get pregnant, which is a clue that biology has won a round or two against regulations from time to time, but all in all, women soldiers have been an asset to the military and they’ve not impaired unit cohesion or effectiveness. We should expect roughly the same kinds of results if we include homosexuals. Pressing one’s affections on another soldier would remain against the rules, and violations of the rules would still occur, but again, at a level sufficiently low that unit morale and cohesion bear up fine under that modest strain.

The military does need time to think over how it would implement the new system. Gates is right here that if there is to be a new policy, new rules will have to be thought out and new instructions given so that everybody can get used to the idea and know what is expected.

Go for the gold: Neutragena shaving creme in a tube. Lasts a lot longer than the foamy cans, and all those excess bubbles above the skin surface don’t do anything to help the razor, anyway.

Is there an update on the SIL’s BF?

Yeah, I decided to use a mix of reason and the threat of violence to make sure he understood where I was coming from. (“Your life is about to turn to shit and get very painful”) I met him in the parking lot where he works. She just called my wife from there mad as hell because he won’t even look at her. HA! Murder.

But to be accurate, no rape and no pillage.

Reading comprehension starts with reading:

Many of the victims were sexually abused, beaten, tortured, and some of the bodies were found mutilated.

Soldiers went berserk, gunning down unarmed men, women, children and babies. Families which huddled together for safety in huts or bunkers were shown no mercy. Those who emerged with hands held high were murdered. … Elsewhere in the village, other atrocities were in progress. Women were gang raped; Vietnamese who had bowed to greet the Americans were beaten with fists and tortured, clubbed with rifle butts and stabbed with bayonets. Some victims were mutilated with the signature “C Company” carved into the chest. By late morning word had got back to higher authorities and a cease-fire was ordered. My Lai was in a state of carnage. Bodies were strewn through the village.
—BBC News

Gary Roschevitz — grabbed an M16 rifle from Varnado Simpson to kill 5 Vietnamese prisoners[52], later according to various witnesses he forced seven women to undress with the intention of them performing sex with him, when the women refused he reportedly shot them.

As much of an asshole as Inhole is, it is funny to think that back in the day, DADT was considered an improvement over the previous policy, which was essentially “root ‘em out and kick ‘em out in disgrace”.

Now he’s defending it because - why? It makes him feel like there aren’t any gays if they don’t paint it on their faces in camo-stick?

And it would be well to remember that DADT applies only to official statements about one’s sexuality to the brass. It’s not like platoons full of soldiers don’t know what’s what. Try telling them that they won’t fight for Brian or Cindy.

Asshole.

You’re right. He said ’ breaking into houses and terrorizing ‘.
The rape thing was years before, when he was chatting with the House Committee about what a good talk he had with the North Vietnamese last time he was in Paris. That whole winter soldier dustup.
…they raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country.

True. Flounces like this one are normally caused by an inability to really debate. LGF has always been a place where posts are fact-checked and challenged. Its very hard to be here if you aren’t used to defending your positions with evidence.

It’s baseball time. The other nine and 10 year olds are getting into the in-field tonight, and The Kid’s pitching. The other night he caught a ball in the face and has a neat bruise all over his cheek. Right after he got up and walked it off, he caught a ball for an out and threw it to second to get another out. They lost but, his double-play kept the other team from winning big—that team is a travelling team of 12 year olds from a larger city and they are HUGE. I swear some are shaving already.

Give or take Charles having threads based around what Stephen Colbert did last night.

272 karmic_inquisitor  Thu, May 13, 2010 3:42:31pm

Maybe someone here has a sharper recollection …

IIRC Gibbon wrote about the fact that Roman Soldiers actually motivated by fighting for each other which implied something that I think Eugen Weber of UCLA made more explicit in describing that many Soldiers of the empire were homosexual and that the tradition of a white gown at a wedding came into being to simulate the white robe a soldier might wear when not wearing armor.

Not sure that this is simply urban legend now but I am pretty sure it was Weber that first put it out there for contemporary historians to kick around.

If it is factual than it demonstrates support for the opposite of what Inhofe is arguing.

It would never occur to Inhofe and his slack-jawed base that he has just defamed everyone who ever served in the US armed forces, as well as confessing to his own complete unfitness to have served.
I would not have let down a fellow soldier for any reason whatever, let alone for a personal quality that did not affect me. It would literally never have crossed my mind.

“truthiness.” Is a phrase that Stephen Colbert came up with to describe things that aren’t supported by fact, but you feel in your gut “ought to be true” since they mesh well with your current world view.

Reginald Perrin said that LGF is no place to argue based on ones gut rather than logic/facts by saying it was no place for truthiness, but since he said it so literally I was able to make a joke based on the fact that when Charles does a post based around something Stephen Colbert does, he is making LGF a place for “truthiness”….

UH-OH, prepare for a hideous wailing and gnashing of teeth

Moderate Republicans back Kagan on hot-button issues

Top Republicans have also highlighted the fact that Kagan has never served as a federal judge, something that distinguishes her from all nine current members of the high court.

If party moderates break from the GOP leadership on these issues, it dramatically increases Kagan’s chances of overcoming a possible filibuster and winning confirmation as the country’s 112th Supreme Court justice.

Massachusetts GOP Sen. Scott Brown — who broke the Democrats’ 60-member filibuster-proof majority by winning the late Ted Kennedy’s seat in January — said after meeting with Kagan that he is satisfied she supports members of the military.

“It was the first question I actually asked her because, having been in the military, I had concerns about [her] position at Harvard,” Brown said.

“It was very clear to me, after we spoke about it at length, that she is supportive of the men and women who are fighting to protect us and very supportive of the military as a whole. I do not feel that her judicial philosophy will not hurt the men and women who are serving.”

The Interwebs are full of bigots. In many ways it is very efficient ate creating bigots.

I (shocked as I am to say it) Glenn Beck is only a symptom, he would not be on the air (doubtlessly not on Rupert Murdoch’s personal money machine, AKA Fox) if he wasn’t able to pick up enough viewers to make Murdoch money.

The only reason Glenn has a show is because he’s finding a need and he’s supplying what people with that need want.

Which makes me feel very very sad about America…

Cheer up, it’s no different now than it ever was. Probably better now, actually. But now we have the internet to give a voice to every screeching monkey with a PC and a keyboard.

I’m always puzzled to see Mathews mentioned in these discussions. He voted for Bush as recently as 2004, and there were plenty of times when he professed his love for the Shrub.

Mathews is a very different beast.

He certainly tried and convicted the Haditha Marines and the Navy Seals and the existence of Gitmo….and…he was, of course, 100% wrong, as the acquittals and exonerations have proven…

It is so sad to see poor backwards Sothern states—I live in one—who tow the Republican line. Racism started it, abetted by Strom Thurmond when he became a Dixiecrat, then a Republican. And when a state has 2 GOP US SEnators, I know they are probably the worse off of all.

The GOP cares not a fig for the wellbeing of the vast majority of a state’s residents.

So when a Republican mayor is elected in say NYC, after Dinkins, we should expect the economy to go down and the crime rate to go up? Same with a Republican governor in NJ?

Oh, and since by your own report you’re from a Sothern state, that would explain why you don’t tow the line when it comes to spelling. But don’t worry, you’re not the worse speller at LGF.

Cynthia McKinney: Government Murdered 5,000 People During Katrina And Dumped Them In A Swamp

“”In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, I had a woman, I’ve never really said this in public, out loud, in front of a lot of cameras, and there’s a lot of cameras in this room now. I had a mother to call me because her son had a very gruesome task. Her son’s charge by the Department of Defense was to process 5000 bodies that had received a single bullet wound to the head — and these were mostly males. And her son was afraid to talk because he signed a silence agreement. So, he only complained to his mother. But, the date about these individuals was entered into a Pentagon computer and then reportedly, the bodies were dumped in a swamp in Louisiana. This is as a result of the tragedy of hurricane Katrina.

Now I have no…no…I have verification from insiders who wish to remain anonymous, at the Red Cross, that this is true. I suspect that these were prisoners. And so, you know, this investigation of the whole prison industrial complex is extremely important. And it should not end with just a question of the nature of prisons in our country, but these five thousand souls also need some justice too.” — Cynthia McKinney

There is video out there too.

The constituent claimed her son had disposed of 5,000 bodies for the Department of Defense during the week of Hurricane Katrina. She further believed that there were credible reports that the bodies were prisoners who had all been crushed by tanks, shot in the head, painted blue, and dumped in a Louisiana swamp. McKinney said that the story had been corroborated by anonymous “insider” sources.[54][55]”

To cite a slightly later example would be to note the the white 1st Cavalry Regiment saw nothing wrong in fighting beside the black 10th Cavalry Regiment at both the Battle of San Juan Hill and the relief of the Peking Legations two years later. At San Juan hill, the color bearer of the 10th carried the flags of both regiment after the 1st’s bearer was shot. Both regiments respected each other as worthy and honor comrades. Hawaii to Birthers: Enough Already

“The time and state resources it takes to respond to these often convoluted inquiries are considerable,” testified Fukino, who has repeatedly stated that she has seen the president’s vital records showing that he was born in the United States.

While the law is relatively broad - it allows all state government agencies to ignore duplicate or very similar requests - it appears to have been crafted specifically to deal with requests from birthers.

State Sen. Will Espero told the Advertiser the new law will help, though the problem isn’t going away.

“It will certainly provide some relief and help that Department of Health staff [needs], although I don’t think it will by any means put an end to the birther issue,” he told the newspaper. “There are people out there, and mostly from the Mainland, who are just rabid about this and I don’t think anything we provide or give them will convince them otherwise.”

Sarah Palin: American Law Should Be ‘Based On The God Of The Bible And The Ten Commandments’

According to Palin, the recent backlash against the National Day of Prayer is proof that some people are trying to enact a “fundamental transformation of America” and to “revisit and rewrite history” in order to shift the Christian nation away from its spiritual roots.

Palins’s advice: “Go back to what our founders and our founding documents meant — they’re quite clear — that we would create law based on the God of the bible and the ten commandments.

“What in hell scares people about talking about America’s foundation of faith?” Palin continued. “It is that world view that involves some people being afraid of being able to discuss our foundation, being able to discuss God in the public square, that’s the only thing I can attribute it to.”

Palin, you are a brainless bint

OT: An ESPN reporter asked MLB players to analyze Elena Kagan’s softball batting stance. Most joked about it, (she got mixed reviews) but National’s closer Matt Capp got really into. Like he was about to face her that night.

“It looks like she’s choking up there and she’s locked down, so it looks like she’s going to give you an aggressive fight — which is probably a good thing in the position she’s going to be in,” Capps said. “But with the bat head going up like that, I’m probably going to try and throw the ball on the inner part of the plate and see if I can’t jam her.

“I’m going to go hard in and soft away, and try to mix up the timing a little bit. It looks like with her stance, she’s going to have a hard time getting to the ball on the inner half of the plate. Anything breaking away from her, with me being a righty, she’ll be a little bit in front of.

“Just the position of her hands and the position of the barrel of the bat, that’s a lot of travel for that bat head to come all the way around through the middle. Where if she lowered it, she could just drop it down on the outside part of the plate hard. That’s a lot of bat-head travel to get to the inner part of the plate. I don’t know, I’d have to see her swing. Maybe her hands are quick enough at this stage of her life where she could still get to it.”

I saw her on the O’Reilly factor when she said that. It’s really a Constitution Interpretation FAIL of massive proportions. Yet she still gets cheered by some for it. [facepalm]

Someone posted this article today and your post reminded me of it. Is Palin a constitution troll?

[Link: www.nytimes.com…]

…In the late 1980s, Internet users adopted the word “troll” to denote someone who intentionally disrupts online communities. Early trolling was relatively innocuous, taking place inside of small, single-topic Usenet groups. The trolls employed what the M.I.T. professor Judith Donath calls a “pseudo-naïve” tactic, asking stupid questions and seeing who would rise to the bait. The game was to find out who would see through this stereotypical newbie behavior, and who would fall for it. As one guide to trolldom puts it, “If you don’t fall for the joke, you get to be in on it.”…

I find it exceedingly disrespectful of the men and women serving our country to suggest that they would let a fellow soldier die because they are gay, which is the logical conclusion of not being willing to fight for them.

That was the first thing I thought when I read it too. Funny how these guys are there to swing “respecting the military forces” around like a shield for their warped view of reality, all the while showing utter contempt to the people serving. No gays, because that would mean soldiers let each other die! No women on subs, because then everyone would take turns gangraping them and besides, you’d have to put in separate showers or something!

I just don’t get how they get away with being that two-faced.

[Link: facultystaff.richmond.edu…]

This is the first month since the beginning of the war in Iraq in which we are spending more money on Afghanistan.

[Link: yglesias.thinkprogress.org…]

Irrespective of your feelings about Iraq today, it’s worth taking a minute to observe that it was absurd to spend more money in Iraq than Afghanistan in 2004. And it was absurd to spend more money in Iraq than Afghanistan in 2005. And it was absurd to spend more money in Iraq than Afghanistan in 2006. And it was absurd to spend more money in Iraq than Afghanistan in 2007. And it was absurd to spend more money in Iraq than Afghanistan in 2008. And it was absurd to spend more money in Iraq than Afghanistan in 2009.

And not just absurd, it’s been positively tragic. Throughout 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 the population of Afghanistan was, unlike the population of Iraq, strongly supportive of a US military presence. Turnabout is fair play, although I have to say that the left-wing flounce seems to lack the passionate intensity of the right-wing version. We can apparently get banned with great fanfare, though. Look at Sigma_x.

Heh. Why does Yeats seem particularly appropriate for the current political situation?

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

re: #548 Obdicut

But we didn’t. We had too few troops. And it had the effect of beggaring the campaign in Afghanistan.

Thankfully, we fixed that error before it was too late. We lost too many people while saying “stay the course”, and the Bush Administration must be faulted for that. The surge should have been announced and Rumsfeld fired 5-6 months earlier. It was a grave mistake to wait.

re: #551 Dark_Falcon

We needed more than the surge, from the beginning. We should not have gone to war on Iraq, since it distracted us from the War on Terror, but, if we were going to do so, we should have done it properly— especially when we were going in almost without allies.

We allowed things to pass that will cause harm for a long, long time— like the sectarian violence that nearly ethnically cleansed some neighborhoods.

It was a plan from people fooling themselves about our reception, and I believe part of why that is true is that those same people were fooling themselves as to the wisdom of that war.

Not entirely sure how to respond to that. I’m not being critical (you make a good point), but I need to think about that.

McKinney will kick his ass. She may be crazy, but she’s fierce.

She would totally kick his doughy ass. Watch out for the fingernails. He’d really be crying then.

Jesus…A Moonbat flounce? Really? You do realize that the left and left leaning moderates pretty much control the board now don’t you?

Bwahahaha, and here I thought the other moderate righties like me were pussies for flouncing when outnumbered 25 to 1.

“OMG two people out out twenty have forcefully disagreed with me, I simply cannot go on here!”

Good luck finding somewhere where everyone always agrees with you 100% of the time, you won’t learn much there though will you? ;)

As Much as I might respect Sen. Inhofe on other matters, On This one - he is at least partially - DEAD WRONG!
If “My Buddy” is Gay, Gray, Green or anything else, he is my buddy - I WILL Cover His Back, as I Expect he will mine. That is the Soldier’s Way.
As to the “politics” of it, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” - is a good compromise - for straight as well as gay personnel. Like the “Trimester System” under Roe v. Wade, the problem is implementation. Need I say more? -S-

558 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce  Thu, May 13, 2010 7:53:04pm

This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My rifle, without me, is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will.

My rifle and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit.

My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage as I will ever guard my legs, my arms, my eyes and my heart against damage. I will keep my rifle clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will.

Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life. So be it, until victory is America’s and there is no enemy, but peace!

(unless you have teh gay)

re: #557 RogueOne

Hey, the old boss left me some info, you might appreciate…
Hi Gina moved in with her boyfriend for her Senior year, then about 18 mos later decided to live with her Mom. She has been is school all this year, and I think is in a better place. Our relationship is SLOWLY repairing itself.

While I was going through this with her, and was very conflicted with
Fred, I sought the advice of a Family Counselor. I learned that I should not or cannot take ownership of the decisions that a Stepchild makes. It is the responsibility of the Parent. It was very cathartic to hear that, and it gave me alot of relief. I could still care and worry about her, but ultimately, it is the parent that should be driving the bus.

It was much harder when Doe was little and there were occasional drugs being found, I really had no tolerance for that with a small child.

Keep in touch and let me know if your friend needs someone to talk to!!

but like i say, nobody gives them national airtime to propogate views like this, and i hear the equivalent and worse over the air everyday from beck, savage, and rush et al.

There are equivalent leftist views broadcast on Pacifica Radio, but with nowhere near the listenership of the larger rightist venues, IMHO.

I guess the question to ask Sen. Inhofe is: are American soldiers worse than Israeli ones? Israeli soldiers seem to have no problem fighting and dying for their gay service members. This whole “unit cohesion” issue is just such a red herring by this point, it’s no longer funny.

562 sffilk  Fri, May 14, 2010 5:50:54am

Note to Senator Inhofe and the AFA: I am a gay man who served honorably in the U.S. military. I didn’t do anything I shouldn’t have with another military man while on active duty. If anything, the straight male members of the military were doing more with whomever whenever they could (at least at the training command where I was stationed). And those who did were officers in the Navy and Marine Corps (I was stationed at NAS Meridian, Mississippi, where there were two intermediate jet training squadrons and one advance jet training squadron - from there, they’d get their “Wings of Gold” and go out to the fleet to fly jets).
