American Family Association Spokesman Fischer Calls for Total Mosque Ban

Wingnuts • Views: 3,102

Ya gotta love Bryan Fischer. Actually, not. When he isn’t calling for Muslims to be banned from the armed forces, or saying the reason Hitler was so evil was because he was gay, he’s demanding a complete ban on mosques in America.

Any chance we can bring back exile as punishment for those who advocate such a severe violation of civil rights?

Can we enact a ban on those god awful monstrosities known as mega-churches while we're at it?

5 Surabaya Stew  Wed, Aug 11, 2010 4:16:58pm

Ah, so in Fischer's mind we're to have the same standard for non-majority religions as the Saudi's do? Wow, thats a great standard to live up to....NOT!!!

6 albusteve  Wed, Aug 11, 2010 4:17:21pm

I might consider a complete ban on all churches of all faiths...probably piss off a lot of people tho...to single out Presbies....er...Muslims is unfair and unAmerican

fitness facilities (swimming pool, gym, basketball court)
a 500-seat auditorium
a restaurant and culinary school
cultural amenities including exhibitions
education programs
a library and art studios
childcare services
a mosque, intended to be run separately from Park51 but open to and accessible to all members, visitors and our New York community
dedicated meditation rooms

Its obvious that education programs is a code phrase for terrorist training. All real education is conducted at home using only one book, right?

as long as the joint is legit, not an arms depot or a jihad training center, I see no problem with it

16 Killgore Trout  Wed, Aug 11, 2010 4:25:47pm

I have an interesting idea. Suppose Muslims started entertaining offers to stop building mosques. They could buy a property, propose a mosque then sell the property for a profit to outraged wingnuts who want to stop the project. It could be a big money maker.

If people would stop with the 'arms depot' and 'jihad training center' bullshit fear mongering, nobody would have a problem with the mosque. Nor do they seem to have a problem with the other mosque a couple blocks away that's been there for forty fucking years.

19 Cato the Elder  Wed, Aug 11, 2010 4:26:55pm

Crap.

I just walked down the block to buy some stuff, and passed the new Ledo's Pizza joint that opened about a month ago.

The owners and most of the staff are Bangladeshi Muslims.

I wished them a good Ramadan, and they immediately invited me to their Eid al-Fitr festival when the fasting month is over.

But of course, I am deluded. While I heartily shake hands with these people, and while they ask after the health of my family and my dog, their brothers are down in the sub-sub-basement, building bombs and cursing the infidels who buy their pizza and beer.

Does any of this shit remind anyone of things that used to be said about Jews?

More On [Imam Faisal] Rauf's "Radicalism."

The State Department is apparently sending Imam Faisal Rauf to Muslim nations abroad to lecture on how "Islam is perceived in America." Cue Republican outrage:

“It is unacceptable that US taxpayers are being forced to fund Feisal Abdul Rauf’s trip to the Middle East,” say Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R) of Florida and Peter King (R) of New York in a statement issued Tuesday. “This radical is a terrible choice to be one of the faces or our country overseas. The USA should be using public diplomacy programs to combat extremism,” they add, “not to endorse it.”

Rauf's "extremism" is an invention. Of course, before he planned to build an Islamic community center near Ground Zero, Republicans didn't have any problem with him going on such missions:

“His work on tolerance and religious diversity is well-known and he brings a moderate perspective to foreign audiences on what it’s like to be a practicing Muslim in the United States,” State Department spokesman P. J. Crowley said Tuesday. He added that the department’s public-diplomacy offices “have a long-term relationship with” Rauf – including during the past Bush administration, when the religious leader undertook a similar speaking tour.

Of course, after spending the last few months being smeared as a terrorist sympathizer, I can kind of understand why some people might be worried about what he might have to say about how "Islam is perceived in America."

Oddly, Republicans didn't complain when the Bush/Cheney State Department partnered with "this radical" to help with our diplomatic efforts in the Middle East. This isn't complicated -- if Bush considered Feisal Abdul Rauf a valuable American voice and representative, there's no reason for the GOP to freak out now.

I wouldn’t say that the United States deserved what happened. But the United States’ policies were an accessory to the crime that happened....Because we have been accessory to a lot of innocent lives dying in the world. In fact, in the most direct sense, Osama bin Laden is made in the USA.

Compare and contrast with Uber patriot Ron Paul:

Have you ever read about the reasons they attacked us? They attack us because we've been over there. We've been bombing Iraq for 10 years...."

Asked by a moderator if he was suggesting the United States invited the attacks, Paul said: "I'm suggesting we listen to the people who attacked us and the reason they did it. And they are delighted that we're over there because Osama bin Laden has said: I am glad you're over on our sand because we can target you so much easier."

Ashkenazi: Next time, IDF will use snipers to halt Gaza-bound flotillas

"Our fundamental problem, and mine as well, was exactly that," he said. "I estimated there would be 18 people on the upper deck, and that if we came with a helicopter and threw a stun grenade they would relent. We had to guarantee 'sterile' conditions for the unit."

Once forces came into contact with passengers, he said, "the navy commander made the right decision in taking over the bridge of the ship."

Ashkenazi said that if the IDF is faced with a similar situation in the future, there may be no alternative to deploying snipers to minimize troop casualties. "When people are looking for a fight, it usually happens," he said.

Sheva brachos Monday.
More sheva brachos on Tuesday.
We got sheva brachos on Wednesday, sheva brachos Thursday and Friday and Shabbos,
Move to Teaneck on Sunday.

Did you book a hall? Not yet.
Shaytel or fall? Don’t know what she’ll get.
How long did it take? 3 dates.
Why the delay? Well, let me update…

When I see a "Kosher Chinese Food" sign, I think I'm in a nice town. A quick look around Teaneck in that video makes me think I'd expand my favorite foods list.

It's a song about a young man who gets a match (a 'shidduch' arranged for him). In this passage he explains that after the wedding, he and his bride will be hosted and honored for the following week, and then plan to move to Teaneck, NJ.

His friends ask him if he's booked a hall yet, which he hasn't, and whether his bride plans to wear a full wig, or a 'fall' (the 'modern' option), which he doesn't know.

They want to know how many dates it took to get engaged (3), and why so long.

The whole phenomenon of shidduch dating is fairly amazing in its complexity. There was a young woman who kept a blog about her experience on the marriage market, called "The Unbroken Glass". Moreover, the so-called Jewish burkha is something done by so few people (fewer than 200 total) and yet so worried Jewish leaders about its possible consequences, that the most religious Jewish court ruled against its use. Married women cover their hair, this is an almost universal custom among observant Jews, although some modern Orthodox and most Conservative women will often go bareheaded after marriage. More Orthodox women used to not cover, but we're in a rightward trend right now.

The wig is an exclusively European custom, probably picked up from Polish nobility like the rest of the Chassische costume. Sephardi women have never worn them, and many authorities don't approve of them. However, others insist that they are really super-modest, and have special qualities not found in regular headscarves.

Close cutting or shaving of the natural hair is also a specific thing to some European communities. It's post-medieval, and not done AFAIK outside the very conservative Chassidic communities these days.

As for the Jewish veiling and shawling and whatnot fad that's developed in Israel, God, I don't know. People get so frum sometimes they lose contact with reality. There was charismatic rebbetzin who was promoting the whole thing, and it seems to have kept going, even though the woman is now in jail.

VP Biden's aircraft (Air Force 2) had a minor incident leaving a LI airport. It's jet wash damaged a nearby plane.

A small private plane parked nearby was lifted a few feet into the air by the jet wash from Biden's plane as it taxied to take off from Francis S. Gabreski Airport, said Air Force spokeswoman Maj. Michelle Lai.

The left wing of the Piper Cub was damaged but no one was on board, Lai said. Biden's 757 took off with those on board apparently unaware of what had happened.

Biden was returning to Washington from vacation, his office said. The airport is in Westhampton Beach, N.Y.

VP Biden's aircraft (Air Force 2) had a minor incident leaving a LI airport. It's jet wash damaged a nearby plane.

That accident was a tragedy to America. Biden survived.

There is an old meme that when you read a fortune from a fortune cookie you add "in bed" to the end for a joke.

We sometimes do the same thing to make a seemingly innocent comment seem somehow sexual.

166 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Wed, Aug 11, 2010 5:23:54pm

Hitler was gay?

I suppose that would be a surprise to Eva Braun.

Actually there are an awful lot of details about Hitler's sex life that have been un-earthed by historians over the years. From what I have seen, he was definitely a pervert, in as much as he liked to have young women (in this case a young cousin) poop on a glass table that he was under while he masturbated. He indulged in all sorts of other prurient things, but was never homosexual.

Making up history is a favorite pass time of the wingnuts. All truths are rewritable to their sense of immediate need and outrage. They rely on the public having no short term memory. We went from the GOP claiming to love Hispanics and reach out to them to the current state of populist outrage falsely directed at them.

We went from cap and trade being a GOP idea which was formulated by President Reagan to deal with acid rain (and it did effectively) and a campaign plank of McCain/Palin to cap and tax.

And the Nazis. They are rightfully considered the epitome of evil. The wingnuts certainly love to call everyone they do not like a Nazi. This is akin to the way that the Nazis called everyone they did not like a communist. Of course, the wingnuts now stupidly believe that communists were Nazis. The nazis loved to bash gays also. In fact, the Nazis murdered them along with Jews. The Nazis certainly hatted immigrants also.

The one thing the Nazis were more than anything else was a populist hyper-nationalistic sect who fed the rage of the ignorant through fear mongering, race baiting, conspiracy theory and jingoistic appeals of belligerence. They were out to cleanse Germany of all "un-pure" things.

The Nazis wold get rid of all undesirables. They would re-write history, law and science to fit with their ideology. Don't kid yourself about the winguts doing just that today ,with their historical revisionism and their moves on the schools. First they would strip them of their rights and ban any academics who would dare speak against it. Books were burnt. There was even a "pure" Nazi take on science. Denying science as part of dogma is one place where both the Nazis and the Communists particularly converged. The other was the re-write of history. Opposing views of any kind, were crowded out and slandered. They would define who the real Germans were, what real German thoughts were, and all else was forbidden or enemy. Once power was taken, the real fun would begin.

The biggest difference between Nazis and Communists were the international revolutionary aims of communism vs. the hyper nationalist aims of fascism. Both sought to create empires, but from utterly different philosophical starting points. The Nazis allied with large corporations and crushed unions. The communists seized the corporations "for" the workers.

Of course, the wingnuts have a problem. Nazis are the epitome of evil, so when the wingnuts use Nazi tactics and think Nazi thoughts, they have to call it something else. They call it a tea-party, and everyone else is now a Nazi.

So let me say it clearly.

This Fischer person is an actual Nazi in both word and deed, if not with that German flavor.

So is Pamela Geller. So is RSM. So is Breitbart. So is Rush Limbaugh and Beck and Coulter and Malkin.

People like Buchanan and the Palians or the loons at Conservapedia are not even lamely trying to hide it.

The co-authors of the Az law do not even try to hide it.

In an irony of history, the Dems are once again the party in power as Nazism rises. The Dems of FDR's day were hardly all the best people on the planet. They were then, as today mostly career politicians with a few idealists sprinkled in.

However, their foe was pure evil.

The Dems of those days became saints by default - even as the GOP of the day saw business opportunity in re-arming Germany. Some things about the GOP have never changed.

Of course, many modern Nazis call themselves Republicans today.

It is not that I love Obama. It is that I hate evil. Few things are more evil than Nazism

I think you mentioned this place yesterday. The Times reviewed Traif, a Williamsburgh pork joint in the midst of the Chasidic Jewish community there...

The name, in Yiddish, refers to food forbidden under Jewish dietary law. To underscore the point, the front door has the logo of a cute little piggy stamped with a heart.

Some would call this wit, others blasphemy. No matter. The name generated plenty of buzz before the place opened in April, which presumably was the intent of the owners, Jason Marcus, the chef, and his girlfriend, Heather Heuser. (He’s Jewish, she’s not.)

But here is Traif’s little secret: it is, simply, a very nice restaurant. There’s nothing outré about the food, which is for the most part delicious and well made. The cooking is thoughtful, the flavors subtle and complex, the prices reasonable.

In an earlier day, the thing he wanted to prohibit would have been any further building of synagogues. Or Masonic lodges. Or Indian sweat-lodges, if it came to that.

Some people live for the destruction and humiliation of their perceived enemies. Some people lie for it. Some do both.

And don't, anyone, please, think it would stop with the prohibition on new mosques. No, of course he doesn't want to burn down the existing ones.

Nearly half of all Americans think the Constitution provides same-sex couples the right to marry, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll.
(...)
In a separate question, some respondents were asked whether the Constitution should (rather than does) give gays and lesbians the right to marry.

"That's different than asking respondents what they think is currently in the Constitution," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

In that separate question, 52% said that same-sex couples should have the constitutional right to marry; 46% say the Constitution should not convey that right.

"It's possible that this is an indication that some Americans believe that the right to marry is not in the Constitution but would support an amendment to add it," Holland notes. "But taking into account the sampling error, there is no statistical difference between the 49 percent who think the Constitution already gives that right to gays and the 52 percent who think it should. So it's difficult to draw any conclusion beyond the basic finding that Americans are closely divided on this topic."

So I'm planning on making pasta with broccoli rabe, olive oil, garlic, crushed red pepper and spicy chicken sausage for dinner, but what pasta should I use?
Farro Rustichella d'Abruzzo?
Whole wheat penne?
Whole wheat chiocciole?
Orecchiette?
Whole wheat linguine?
Regular linguine?
Orzo?

Decisions, decisions.

Personally, I would make the regular or the whole wheat linguine al dente with a cube of chicken both in the water I used to boil it. After I strained it, I would toss it with olive oil and basil with some crushed black pepper and if you have them some lightly sautéed cashews.

No cashews, but I do have some marcona almonds...I might add a few of those as they have a nice saltiness to them.

That is the idea,. I would lightly sauté them - and by lightly I mean perhaps 45 seconds to a minute on medium high with a little olive or sesame oil and if you want to get really exotic a tiny pinch of nutmeg.

And the reason I suggest the bouillon or broth is because you did not mention any sauce that you were (I assume) stir frying the chicken sausage, broccoli and peppers in. It will add a nice flavoer to the pasta without demanding a red or white sauce.

Bryan Fischer just wants the same reasonable, tolerant, enlightened policies in the U.S. that now prevail in dar al Islam: other religions may hang on for a time, but they may not build new houses of worship.

Logic puzzle: is Fischer correct that these are reasonable and enlightened policies? If so, what does he have against building new mosques, given that they are houses of worship connected to a reasonable and tolerant religion?

Is he wrong about that? If so, why does he want the U.S. to join the ranks of the unreasonable and intolerant?

Or is there a difference between being reasonable and being tolerant? Is he reasonable to want the U.S. to be another intolerant kingdom? If so, what is the historical record of such polities?

(They may win a battle or two, but they don't prosper and life under such rule is a bitch.)
