Glenn Beck on Faith Healing and Vaccination: ‘Meet Mr. Smith and Wesson’

Wingnuts • Views: 8,402

Today on his radio show, Glenn “Raving Freakazoid Nut Sandwich” Beck said parents who believe in faith healing should have the absolute right to refuse vaccinations and medical treatment for their children.

Even if the kid loses an eye. After all, it’s only one eye.

And then he advocated killing any government official who would take children away because of this. Yes, he really did.

BECK: Here’s a child that is going to lose an eye. And the state thinks it’s better for them to lose the parents.

GRAY: Yeah.

BECK: Than an eye. I’m sorry, I don’t.

BURGUIERE: I don’t know, I mean it’s just one of these things that when you have things that are treatable and obvious, I think that you have to, you have to — you’re putting these kids in danger. It’s just like a child abuse situation.

BECK: No.

BURGUIERE: It really is. When you’re talking about if you have — if you stuck something in their eye intentionally for them to go blind —

BECK: Then it’s child abuse.

BURGUIERE: Right, but when you let them just go blind out of the disease that could be cured, that’s not? I mean, it’s certainly at least kind of close to it.

BECK: Don’t they have the right — the state has a bigger right to the child? Look, look, again, we’re not talking about total blindness, and we’re not talking about life and death here.

BURGUIERE: It’s not degrees of blindness is not the argument here.

BECK: Yes there is. One eye. One eye.

BURGUIERE: So if it’s one eye, we can let him go blind in the one eye, but —

BECK: You are talking about taking a child away and the state rearing a child and making decisions. If they’re nuts, then — but if they are sane? They just happen to believe in God and faith-healing, then I think you’ve got to let them rule. The family is sacred.

GRAY: Where do you draw that line? So you’d draw that line at something that is maybe life-threatening?

BECK: I don’t know where the line is.

GRAY: It’s really hard.

[CROSSTALK]

BECK: But here’s why it has to be drawn. Because, vaccinations. You don’t give your kid vaccination — how many people do you know that ten years ago people said, “Oh, vaccinations, please stop with the vaccination thing.” How many people do you know who are really smart, who have really done their homework, who have children with autism, and say, “Don’t do the vaccinations thing”? A lot.

BURGUIERE: There’s a lot of people who believe that.

GRAY: I’ve got very close friends who, and they swear by it. Vaccination thing. Swear by it.

BECK: My children? We’re not getting the flu vaccine. No. The state comes and says my kids have to have the flu — go to hell. Go to hell. Get off my porch. You want to take my kids because of that? Meet Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson. Get off my land. Period.

Wow. And one of them actually managed to think this through to the point where he realized that allowing a child to go blind through neglect--regardless of the rationale--is child abuse. I personally think children who ask constant questions of their uncle while he is trying to watch professional baseball playoff games should be locked in a cage that is then hoisted high enough that their questions are inaudible, for the duration of the game, but I suspect my sister wouldn't agree with that, and wouldn't view my rationale as good libertarian policy if I tried to implement it.

Absolutely. What if a kid has a nail stuck through his hand? Is it the parent's right to forbid him from taking it out?

Such insane posturing on their part.

5 elizajane  Fri, Oct 15, 2010 1:02:13pm

Spend a while working in the foster care system. Listen for a few years to people involved in the adoption of older children. Meet some teens who have "emancipated" themselves from their families. Then come back to me about that "family is sacred" line.
Out in the wide world of reality, the ethics of how we as a society treat children has a lot of big, gray areas. Declaring that "the family is sacred" is a way of shutting down discussion in an area where discussion is crucial, exactly for the sake of the children.

10 Gus  Fri, Oct 15, 2010 1:06:52pm

Right. Sure Mr. Beck. The parents have rights. Let's have a look at the details.

Oregon Takes Custody of Faith Healers' Baby

(CBS/AP) The Oregon Department of Human Services won custody Tuesday of a 10-month-old Oregon City child facing blindness in one eye.

The girl's parents, Timothy and Rebecca Wyland, believe in faith healing and are facing trial in January on charges of failing to provide adequate care.

The Oregonian reports the state has had temporary custody of the girl, Alayna Wyland, since July. She was initially placed in foster care but allowed back in the Wyland home last month under a court order requiring close medical supervision.

The ruling Tuesday in Clackamas County Circuit Court assures a treatment plan and gives the state power to act on the girl's behalf.

The couple is charged with first-degree criminal mistreatment and goes to trial in January.

Continues.

Meet the parents. That's Timothy Wyland on the left and Rebecca Wyland on the right. She's 23 years old and he's 44 years old.

11 Gus  Fri, Oct 15, 2010 1:07:25pm

Weird.

Is there anywhere that the flu vaccine is mandatory?

What the hell is he talking about?

No, the flu vaccine is not mandatory, it's just a very good idea.

And as for refusing treatment for a child with a curable condition -that is a form of child abuse, no question about it.

Now, maybe in consultation with a physician, the parents get information about the treatment and information about what will happen if treatment is withheld, and perhaps decide that withholding treatment under certain circumstances is the better thing to do. That's one thing.

But to simply withhold treatment because you personally don't believe in modern medicine or technology? That is child abuse.

It's no secret I'm a Christian religious believer; and I believe, to the depth of my soul, that a refusal to use technology, medical or otherwise, that God gave humans the intelligence and wherewithal to develop, is turning your back on Him. I don't understand how anyone could think otherwise.

re: #2 Obdicut

There are some medical institutions that do require it.

Some universities do. Loyola University Health System for example.

Vaccinations (not necessarily influenza vaccines) are required to enter schools because of the heightened risk of spreading such easily prevented diseases like measles, mumps, rubella, whooping cough, etc.

Some state politicians have pushed for mandatory flu vaccinations. See NY's Tom Duane for the latest attempt in NY.

But thus far no state has mandated flu vaccinations.

19 Gus  Fri, Oct 15, 2010 1:12:36pm

Wingnut logic. Gay parents raising a child in a nice home with health care, education, and a nice environment: bad! Heterosexual parents raising a child (in a van down by the river) who is going blind (because Jesus told them it's the way!) and getting no education: good!

I know a family who uses this as a reason to not get vaccines. The kid told me that if they were 'good' then they wouldn't get the bad diseases. Getting a cold is an indication that something theological is off and something needs to be done to atone.

It's sorta like a really, really warped 'be good kids so Santa will give you presents' way of the parents getting their kids to be obdient except the threat in this case sickness and/or death from sickness.

Although they do have the right to believe what they want I personally feel that this borders on emotional and mental abuse. I find it pretty sick actually and feel awful for the kids.

30 Gus  Fri, Oct 15, 2010 1:23:00pm

The church.

Followers of Christ

During the latter part of the twentieth century, the church began to attract attention from authorities in the state of Oregon due to an unusually high mortality rate among its children. Larry Lewman, a former medical examiner in the state, alleges that during a ten-year period twenty-five children perished due to the lack of medical intervention—a death rate 26 times higher than among the general population. An investigation by The Oregonian claimed that at least 21 out of 78 minors found to be buried in the church cemetery died of preventable causes, including simple infections which would be easily treated with routine antibiotics. The high death rate among church children attracted national media attention, including coverage of the church by Time magazine, ABC News newsmagazine 20/20,[9] and the PBS program Religion & Ethics Newsweekly.

re: #28 pharmmajor

Exactly. They're crossing the line by putting their children at risk.

With the anti-vaccine thing most definitely. They don't shun medical care altogether though. So if the kid does get sick they'll use medicine or a doctor it's just it's looked on as a punishment because of something they did wrong.

And yeah now that I think about it that doesn't border mental abuse it is. What a warped way to grow up.

Yeah, neither do I. If they want to pray they should pray for their doctor and medical teams. Another way I would look at it would be "God made doctors, science, and medicine" to cure the sick. Even though I'm not a believer I think that would be the correct logic.

Beck's pal Esther is toxic in California:

Sarah Palin speaks in San Jose

For someone widely credited with helping to shape the Republican field in the midterm elections, it was curious who didn't appear with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin Thursday when she spoke to a wildly enthusiastic audience in San Jose: Any major Republican Party candidates.

Or any Republican candidates at all, for that matter.

Palin, who resigned as governor 2 1/2 years into her term, delivered a 40-minute speech - complete with a trademark "You betcha!" - and answered a few questions afterward before a less-than-capacity audience of 1,400 at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Her paid appearance was sponsored by the conservative Liberty and Freedom Foundation.

[...]

Esther appeals to the highly religious SoCon crowd. While that may be near 1/4 of the US electorate, here in California it's a small minority (outside of Orange county and surrounding areas, and some of the rural counties in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.)

California is not Alabama.

As the GOP goes Tea Party it will become a regional party.

re: #47 elizajane

That's probably true. A lot of smart people got caught up in the vaccinations thing, people who were totally freaked out to find that they had a child with autism. (In general, in fact, very smart people have a very hard time dealing with children who are not as obviously smart as they are--it's well known in the adoption world).
The problem is that most really smart people have, since then, read the piece in The Lancet rescinding the original research on the vaccine--autism link as completely flawed and unrepeatable. So Beck heard smart people saying this once upon a time, but they aren't saying it any more.

I was one of those people. When reliable scientific studies emerged that were not tied to any of the pharma companies (and could not be accused of bias), I accepted that it really does look like autism is controlled by genetics and possibly an unidentified environmental factor.

I've been dealing with creationists, homophobes, anti-Constitutionalists, scary illiterate homeschoolers, theocrats, radical pro lifers, extreme gun rights peeps, racists, anti-vaccers, climate change deniers - you name it - for years. Seriously, y-e-a-r-s. I've managed to reach some type of inner peace, if only now there are recognizable labels for what I couldn't quite articulate before.

Glenn Beck didn't create this base, because it's been there, under the surface, like rats in the sewer system. The scary part is now they're comfortable out in daylight because they've found so many of their own to lead the charge.

I often wondered what the world would be like if these freaks ever got a real foothold in politics, and had a chance to implement and assert their crazy on everyone else. Unfortunately, I may live long enough to find out.

I have to admit, I'm relieved to the point of near-giddiness the people on LGF have 'met' my client base.

What field are you in? I bump into this type or thing here and there but not on a regular basis.

I just don't understand the mindset of those parents who won't vaccinate their children. Mine (ages 5 and 3) have gotten every single recommended vaccine at the recommended age. Additionally, they have gotten the flu shot or Flu Mist every season, even as infants. Last year, they got three doses of the flu vaccine, as recommended.

This whole "vaccinations cause autism!" bullshit (for that is what it really is, bullshit) remind me of this article by Cracked: The 5 Mos Ridiculously Over-Hyped Health Scares of All Time. Then there's also Cracked's 5 Irrational Fears (Even Rational People Have).

Those two articles have one thing in common: one "expert" (whether real or not) shoots his/her mouth off to the public about one thing or another and the general population absolutely lose their shit over, despite not one bit of credible scientific evidence to support such allegations, or shoddy "evidence" to back it up! It's insane and depressing to know that a large section of the population don't investigate such accusations and allegations, instead taking what they see/hear at face value because someone happens to be considered an "expert" in the issue, especially when it comes to their children. It just makes me feel that people, in general, are dumb, ignorant sheep!

These anti-vaccination fuckers are going to kill a lot of people and maim many, many more. These people should be shunned and humiliated as ignorant and exiled to some faraway island to protect society as a whole. They are not only anti-vaccination, but also anti-science as they don't agree with the science at hand that has, in my terms, knocked their "knowledge" over the head, took their wallet, then threw it out a second story window. It should be settled, but these people see science as something that threatens their views and, as such, threaten their power over the sheep, and that can't be accepted to them!

Fuck, this is so disgusting.

re: #7 JasonA

wonders if "the family is sacred" clause applies to Muslim families that want their daughters to wear burkas...

Or sent to the home country for a certain procedure described by Ayaan Hirsi Ali?

The Family is Not Sacred. It's a means to an end---raising children, keeping life going in the teeth of the inevitability of death. It's a good means, all in all, and the State cannot possibly do an adequate job of it. However, parents are not masters of their children but stewards only, and some make a total botch of the job. The State can do better than that.

A parent may not harm a child, or through inaction, allow a child to come to harm. Isaac Asimovs first law of Parentobotics.

Depriving a child of medical care necessary to save an eye, or cutting the child in ways that do permanent and irreparable harm, is atrocious. Religious beliefs that require such deeds cannot be allowed to be translated into deeds. We in this day and age do not permit human sacrifice, and we do not permit any approximation to it.

Misters Smith and Wesson do not get any say in the matter. When justice, reason, mercy, and force all line up in the other camp, it takes a certain gravely misplaced pride to imagine that God fights on your side.

Not a "civil war" fought to take over the united States, as it is called in history books today, this was a war in which Southerners fought to defend their homes and families against an aggressive invasion by federal troops. The South peacefully seceded, just like our Founding Fathers did in 1776 with England ; and all we wanted was to be left alone to govern ourselves. But the north and Abraham Lincoln would not allow the South to peacefully leave because of the taxes and tariffs the South paid.

Indeed it is. Correlation is not causation. Older, more highly educated parents, (and the two correlate) are, or were, more likely to scrupulously attend to vaccinating their children. But parental personality, as well as parental age, seem to play into the statistics of autism. This would generate a correlation between those statistics, and vaccination.

Autism spectrum disorders are normally diagnosed in a time window that overlaps and slightly follows vaccination windows. This too would create correlations.

BUT

Taking the mercury out of vaccines hasn't budged the autism statistics. There is just no scientific mechanism there. It's like cell phones and brain cancer.

Science can be a tough pill to swallow, with its cruel insistence on facts and evidence, its pitiless way of giving answers such as "chance" or "smoking" when people face dire news, as we all must face sooner or later, and its indifference to social niceties such as splitting the difference when there's a difference of opinion.

Small wonder that the Left, as well as the Right, shies away from the cold glare of science's truths on occasion.

Wow, the Sons of Confederate Veterans are feeling frisky, aren't they?

Civil War revisionism in all its noxious glory.

I don't know whether to believe the claim about the History Channel or not. The ad is so outrageous I find it hard to believe they'd accept it.

The only thing I can think of is maybe they bought time with their local cable carrier to run the ads locally on the History Channel. Still pretty outrageous, even for Georgia.

Wow man that's fucked up. Two things: I love how they say the south seceded peacefully but forget the little detail of the confederates firing on a United States fort in Charleston Harbor and two love the lionizing of Forrest whom many say was the founder of the KKK. I'm a second generation southerner and honestly I am tired of these people who try to make the confederates out to be good guys. They fought for states rights, yes but it was the states right to own a fellow human being. Lincoln was not a saint but I'll take him over Jefferson Davis and the CSA any day of the week,

They say it's one of ten ads. I think the rest are on their youtube channel.

Speaking of frisky confederates:

I am convinced we Americans are being lied to by our government. I am also convinced our economy is on the verge of collapse. Maybe it is just my natural paranoia, but I simply don’t see the “silver lining” inside the dark clouds hanging low over Wall Street and other financial centers in America. I think we are in for a total collapse of our economic system.

What then?
Well, we start over. I mean, literally, we START OVER.

235 researchok  Fri, Oct 15, 2010 3:13:49pm

What is going on at the Guardian (and elsewhere) re LGF and CJ isn't about never ending 'He said, she said'. To characterize the accusations and counter accusations that way is a disservice.

LGF has carved out a niche as a home for political evolution, a most natural state of affairs. LGF is not about agendas, really nor is it about towing party lines.

Evolution has always been a messy affair and political evolution even more so. Some of us evolve more slowly, others more quickly and yet others not at all.

What we all have in common here- left, right, center, pro choice, pro life, and every other variation of political and moral stations is that we all evolve to the point of elevating the dignity of others. That more than anything characterizes the community at LGF. Every single person who comes and stays here has modified stringent beliefs and ideas to recognize and respect others. There are no monolithic groups and there is no blind allegiance.

LGF will tolerate- embraces, actually- all kinds of points of view and all kinds of ideas- as long as those ideas do not marginalize groups, individuals or beliefs.

Neither atheists or believers are accorded a higher status and CJ's own political beliefs notwithstanding, neither liberals or conservatives are afforded a priestly status.

If you can make an argument cogently and distinctly, and without resorting to name calling or trashing an entire group of people, have at it. Some may disagree and you may find yourself on the short end, but your voice will not be cut off.

LGF isn't about what was said at one point in time or another, it is about the evolution of every kind of idea and political ideology.

LGF won't make everyone happy all the time because as noted, evolution, like all forms of democracy, is a messy business. What we at this point in time all want, isn't relevant. What we will end up with is what will work best for all of us, usually a hybrid of ideas. Nature has a way of taking it's course.

As long as LGF keeps evolving it will remain relevant. The kerfuffle at the Guardian is evidence of that.

Species that didn't evolve are curiosities and no more- which is a nice way of saying they failed. As history has taught, ideological purists of the left and the right will have failed- and that's why LGF works. Here, we evolve.

Politics

Guthrie endorsed Texas Congressman Ron Paul for the 2008 Republican Party nomination. He said, "I love this guy. Dr. Paul is the only candidate I know of who would have signed the Constitution of the United States had he been there. I'm with him, because he seems to be the only candidate who actually believes it has as much relevance today as it did a couple of hundred years ago. I look forward to the day when we can work out the differences we have with the same revolutionary vision and enthusiasm that is our American legacy." [6] He told the New York Times Magazine that he is a Republican because, "We had enough good Democrats. We needed a few more good Republicans. We needed a loyal opposition."[7]

Interesting tidbit:

Arlo Guthrie received religious training for his bar mitzvah from Rabbi Meir Kahane, who would go on to form the Jewish Defense League. "Rabbi Kahane was a really nice, patient teacher," Guthrie later recalled, "but shortly after he started giving me my lessons, he started going haywire. Maybe I was responsible."

Is that like in public schools where the kids pray before the test? An old joke close to the old one about there being no atheists in foxholes is that there are no atheists on the eve of a final exam or pop quiz. I feel bad honestly for any child whose parents think the only solution to their ailments is more prayer. I don't mean to devalue prayer. After all I pray myself but we should feel blessed and fortunate to have professionals in medicine.

Beck's pal Esther is toxic in California:

Sarah Palin speaks in San Jose

Esther appeals to the highly religious SoCon crowd. While that may be near 1/4 of the US electorate, here in California it's a small minority (outside of Orange county and surrounding areas, and some of the rural counties in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.)

California is not Alabama.

As the GOP goes Tea Party it will become a regional party.

California Republicans won't touch her with a pole. Whitman shut her out very effectively at the debate. Even California so-cons don't want to deal with Palin.

Also, there are love poems from medieval Persia that celebrate trailing down the street after the girl you love, admiring the way her butt curves out her chador when the breeze is just right.

Dr. Denmark is still with us at age 112. She credits her extraordinary lifespan to (among other things) completely avoiding added dietary sugar.
That seems a bit drastic to me, but when a 112 year old doctor gives advice on longevity, it might be a good idea to listen.

don't know if it's been posted yet, but there was an article about Harry Whittington, the guy Cheney shot, still having health problems years after it happened.

Nearly five years on, Harry Whittington still speaks with a slight flutter in his voice -- a "warble," he calls it, inadvertently choosing a bird metaphor. His easy East Texas drawl changed forever one day in February 2006 when a tiny lead pellet pierced his larynx. It's still there.

And since it's my hobby to find comment trolls, it didn't take long before i found one!

The Obama deranged remind me of Paulians back in the 00s. You would search for the most innocuous thing (like hardwood furniture) and the first thing to show up would be something about "Ron Paul". No surprise that the same personalities (or is that psychology) of the Paulians worked it's way into the Tea Party/GOP and current Obama derangement movement.

Which is just so indescribably stupid. This is the ideal opportunity for a test run to determine the effects of pot legalization on black market traffic, border violence, etc. that can finally lead to ending this idiotic WoD. Too much money in it I suppose.

These people live to fight straw men. Always on the ready to valiantly threaten to shoot (because they like guns) any number of the boogymen that exist in their own minds.

I like guns, too. I have guns. Everyone in my family does. We grew up with them, as a matter of fact. Do we manage to somehow inject them into a majority of our conversations and have wet dreams about killing people? No. Fuck no.

I think the people that have them, that talk about them the least, are the ones who walk quietly and carry the big stick. The ones that are orgasmic about them freak me the hell out.

For some reason those people always talk about their .50 Desert Eagle too, not realizing what a ridiculous poser gun it is.

Do you want me to have epilepsy for Shabbos. BTW, MKelly posted a real gem on the tabletop warming post. I pointed out three of his glaring errors, but I left the biggest one as a puzzle to see if people are following my thermo lectures. Anyone care to take the challenge?

I would vote for this:
"Also since the young boy indicated the lamps were representing Earth then to prove that Earth gets warmer because of CO2 he should have told us the lamp got hotter."
The experiment is not trying to show directly that the "earth" (the radiant source in this case) is getting hotter, but that the atmosphere, represented by the gas samples in the jars, will get hotter and stay that way. If the lamps were in any way a reflective device, as the Earth itself is, rather than merely a convenient source of radiant energy, Mkelly might have the shadow of a point. As it is the reasoning is ridiculous.

I wouldn't know a Desert Eagle from a bald eagle, honestly. But I have encountered a lot of forums and such, where the talk seems to fall to guns, and then it's like a posing contest at the Mr. Universe competition.

Collectors and target shooters and reloaders, on the other hand, can go on for hours and hours, because it's all very intricate and interesting, and they know WTF they're talking about. But you don't get the bravado and stormtrooper bravado, thankfully. I have family the collect and shoot, so I've heard hours and hours about nothing but guns. They don't, however, get into pseudo psycho paranoid militia diatribes. It's two different animals.

If hunters don't thin the deer herds, all the animals suffer in the winter, and some of them starve.

Also, fewer people are hunting, so there are more mountain lions.

But not enough to take up the slack.

Cal. fish and game relies on winter starvation to keep the deer population at an acceptable level.

Hunting is more humane, if you have good hunters.

This is the news from No. Cal.

I just experienced a computer induced home accident.

I got up to make some tea and didn't realize that my foot and the bottom half of my leg was completely asleep until I was already taking a step.

NO support.

Fell into the counter, knocked a plate and some glasses off (one broke), slid to the floor and somehow managed to gash my arm on something.

Scared one of the cats who was sleeping on the window sill and knocked off two of my herb pots. Dirt every where.

So then I'm on the floor bleeding with no feeling in my foot and BOTH dogs decided to hurry over to see what's wrong with Mom and I'm trying to get them to go away because there's broken glass on the floor and they're pawing right through it.

So yeah that's how I just spent the last 20 mins, bandaging, shooing hyped up animals and sweeping up dirt and glass.

The moral of my story?

440 joest73  Fri, Oct 15, 2010 6:01:01pm

What's missing from the Media Matters snip is the back and forth discussion that took place about the issue for a few minutes before this clip.

Unfortunately, Glenn probably didn't do his homework on this one. They were talking about this story:
http://www.oregonlive.com/oregon-city/index.ssf/2010/10/state_wins_custody_of_oregon_city_girl_in_faith-healing_case.html

Beck probably did see this picture of the poor infant. I am a conservative catholic but no "faith" would allow me to let one of our kids suffer like this infant girl.

Still....media matters missed the point.....they were reaching for a story by making a big deal out of the "Meet Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson" comment.

The bigger issue is how Beck made light of a infant that has to be suffering from that growth on here eye.

re: #444 SanFranciscoZionist

It was inspired by the depraved tale of Congo Free State, a privately controlled government that, as you might expect, self-destructed in lots of horrible ways.

The baskets of severed hands, set down at the feet of the European post commanders, became the symbol of the Congo Free State. ... The collection of hands became an end in itself. Force Publique soldiers brought them to the stations in place of rubber; they even went out to harvest them instead of rubber... They became a sort of currency. They came to be used to make up for shortfalls in rubber quotas, to replace... the people who were demanded for the forced labour gangs; and the Force Publique soldiers were paid their bonuses on the basis of how many hands they collected.

In theory, each right hand proved a killing. In practice, soldiers sometimes "cheated" by simply cutting off the hand and leaving the victim to live or die. More than a few survivors later said that they had lived through a massacre by acting dead, not moving even when their hands were severed, and waiting till the soldiers left before seeking help. In some instances a soldier could shorten his service term by bringing more hands than the other soldiers, which led to widespread mutilations and dismemberment.

Congo Free State was the tool of Leopold the Builder, King of Belgium. Bruce Bueno di Mosquito, in his book "The Predictioneer's Game", describes all this, as well as the relatively benign face that Leopold presented to the Belgians [who had it in their power to depose him if he treated them badly.] Bruce concludes that people, even the most innately demonic, respond to incentives. Watch, then, the moral is, and do not give too much power to anyone, even a Leopold the Builder. You never know what he'd be like given absolute power, until it's too late.

I guess it is time to return to the good ole days of polio, whooping cough, and other preventable diseases. It must be God's plan.

That's what the Mormon faith does to you; it clouds your view and makes you think you're living in the dark ages...

Come on now, I gave mormon friends who could internet circles around you, dude. :) Unless by dark ages you mean "build your own websites from scratch, write and create and draw webcomics and make a living off it"

I fell asleep during Apocalypse Now. It was the weirdest damn thing I have ever seen. I think it was around the Playboy models, or possibly the French colonial family, that I just gave up. I didn't care what happened to any of these people.

Apocalypse Now is the weirdest movie you've ever seen?

Also :( it's one of my favorite movies of all time

I've been out of the loop (e.g., ignoring this crap), but this Beck guy - nuts, right? So why are people still listening to him? Oh, wait. History repeats itself.

re: #457 WindUpBird

I viewed Apocalypse Now from scatch, with no backstory. As I watched it, keeping in mind I was an English major, I thought, "This is very familiar - hold on - this is a lot like that novella by Joseph Conrad that I read in college - - - - !!!" Consequently, when I had my "aha - they based the movie on the novella!!" moment, it felt like an old friend. An old, weird friend.

One is privileged to threaten more force than he is legally allowed to use - especially in the case of trespassing. But, it could escalate if the one threatened actually feels imminent danger and responds with like force or the person threatening the force actually uses it. To say Beck actually advocated murdering is a stretch for the objective commentary.

Nonetheless, to mention it as he does, when some take his writings to an extreme, could be dangerous.
