Limbaugh on Birth Control: ‘We’re Supposed to Pay if She Didn’t Close Her Legs’

Gimme dat ol’ time misogyny
Wingnuts • Views: 34,342

In a long career filled with repellent misogynistic rhetoric, rarely has Rush Limbaugh reached such a pinnacle of porcine perversity: Rush On Woman Concerned About Access To Birth Control: ‘We Are Supposed To Pay In The Event’ She ‘Did Not Close Her Legs’.

He's the trophy wife kind of man. Has the young hot secretary around for a few years, then gets rid of her for a newer, younger model when the first one gets a wrinkle or a gray hair.

We needn't be concerned or angry that a half-baked quack and con-man like Limbaugh exists, I've know dozens just like him around this part of the world.
We should be very concerned, though, that he is probably the single most influential individual in either of our two major political parties.

The Right has never accepted that misogynistic talk is not OK. During the presidential primaries, they were willing to make all kinds of grotesque smears about Hilary Clinton. They didn't quite know what to do with a black man -because they'd gotten the memo that the *n* word wasn't going to fly any more. It took them quite a while to come up with the "secret muslim" and "Kenyan colonialist" code words. But nothing is too trashy to say about a woman, nobody will call you on it.

To be fair, the double standard is larger than this. While people were grossed out by the Time cover showing the woman with her nose cut off in Afghanistan, there wasn't nearly the outcry that there would be if a nation somewhere were reenslaving black men. But that's another whole argument.

Why should they? In their view, women are always subservient to men, and shouldn't do things like work outside the home, go to college, or have any kind of human rights. They should just be kept ignorant about their bodies and their rights until Daddy sells them into marriage to the highest bidder, then spend the rest of their lives pumping out a kid as often as possible.

That's God's plan, after all. =P

Go Harry, Go!

[Link: www.washingtonpost.com...]

Harry Reid moves to box John Boehner in
By Greg Sargent

Harry Reid, on the Senate floor moments ago, uncorked a blast at Republicans over Planned Parenthood that suggests Dems think they’ve got John Boehner boxed in big time:

“Republicans want to shut down the government because they think there is nothing more important than keeping women from getting cancer screenings? That is indefensible, and everyone should be outraged — women and men. Republican leaders in the House have only a few hours left to look in the mirror, snap out of it and realize how positively shameful that would be.”

“For months, this conversation has been about billions and trillions of dollars. It has been about weighty issues and difficult decisions. This debate used to be about saving money.

“No longer. We have an agreement on the cuts and savings. And that agreement includes a historic level of cuts...

“The consequences of letting our country’s funding expire would be devastating. It would be devastating to our troops, to our small businesses and to Americans’ everyday lives – people who just want to get a home loan or get their tax refund or get their paycheck. It would damage our image and credibility around the world.

“But Republicans are asking me to sacrifice my wife’s health, my daughter’s health and my nine granddaughters’ health. They’re asking me to sacrifice the health of women in Nevada and across America. I won’t do it.

“As a legislator, I’m frustrated. And as an American, I’m appalled. As a husband, a father and a grandfather, I’m personally offended.”

I actually met Rush Limbaugh back in the nineties. He was delivering some sort of address to the young Republicans or some group like that, while I was talking to an ROTC class across the way. I ran across him on the sidewalk outside, with his entourage. I had dressed up in my army reserve uniform for the ROTC presentation, something I rarely did on campus. I shook his hand and said hello. To his credit, Limbaugh recognized my Vietnam service ribbon and thanked me for my service. Having read about his dubious draft deferment, I wanted to blurt out, "Great! But where the fuck were you?" I stayed diplomatic though and thanked him for visiting our humble institution.

38 Opal  Fri, Apr 8, 2011 1:54:47pm

Yeah, let's make it a law that women keep their "legs shut" unless they are planning to reproduce. I'm good with that. I'm not sure how men will deal with it, but heck, it would solve so many problems. Sorry guys, no sex unless your female partner is trying to get pregnant. No recreational sex at all - none - not even a little quickie. Oh, and if you should fail to control yourself and/or persuade your woman to have sex, and she becomes pregnant, you get castrated. After all, how can we pass all the burden of birth control solely onto women?

And don't forget doing away with the "immoral" fashions that show any more skin than the face and hands. You know how men can't control themselves if they see a bit of bare thigh.

We threw the Taliban out in Afghanistan, but we seem to be welcoming its American cousin here with open arms.

I'm so glad I voted for him. He's also listening to his constituents (or at least the ones who think like me). I called his office yesterday to tell him to not back down on this issue and then called John Ensign's office to tell him to quit playing games. Ensign actually called on his party to back down on their demands. That would be the first time he's actually done something I've called him about.

45 wrenchwench  Fri, Apr 8, 2011 1:58:06pm

Rush wrote a piece about his drug addiction that said when he figured it out (with the help of a counselor) he realized deep down he didn't feel good about himself. The drugs were a way of not dealing with it.

He's stopped using drugs, because they were bad for business, but he has continued using women as a means to make himself feel superior.

Big baby.

I have PCOS, which means that somewhere along the way I developed ovarian cysts that threw my entire hormonal balance out of whack. One of the meds I take for my symptoms is The Pill. Without it, I'd be right back where I was before -- an absolute mess with severely irregular periods (nothing for months at a time, then periods that would last for weeks on end) and with about an extra 50 pounds on me, since the meds I take have given me a metabolism again.

Some of us take birth control for more reasons than not wanting to be parents. I wish these assholes would realize that.

This is from Limbaugh's daily email:

President Obama to Enslave US Military
in Order to Protect Abortion Funding

Planned Parenthood protected. Armed Forces go unpaid.

"Jesse Jackson says the government shutdown would be a return to the Civil War. If today's troops still engage in battle -- if they go to war and execute the orders -- but are not paid by their commander-in-chief, are they his slaves? It sure sounds like Obama has more in common with President Jefferson Davis than he does with President Lincoln." -Rush

And further down we have this one:

"What's a few dead babies between friends? President Obama has no problem ordering a moratorium on drilling for oil, but he will not support a moratorium on drilling for babies." -Rush

As long as the GOP persists in it's anti choice position, only a small percentage of women will vote for Republicans. Unlike in certain muslim nations where a woman is only considered "half" a man, in the USA, women are equal and their votes count the same as a man. So by taking this anti choice position, they're basically telling independent women who might CONSIDER voting for the GOP based on other issues that their vote is not wanted. It's a recipe for electoral defeat.

Even if this shut down is just a hoax it's still shitty. The GOP should be ashamed,

Studies in the past few days have shown that only a tiny proportion of the American public is paying much attention to the shutdown antics. For the Republicans, it's all been a big charade directed to their base. They will get very little blowback from the rest of the population. It's been a nuisance for the families of federal employees, but since they are "government workers" their opinion doesn't count. To justify messing around with the armed forces -- "we tried to pay you but the Dems hate you so they wouldn't play"?

Yesterday there was an editorial somewhere headlined "Pay the Guys With the Guns First." I found that a creepy way of framing this issue -- like, was the point that if we didn't pay them, our soldiers would riot and sack cities in Afghanistan and Iraq? That's what always happened in the 16th century when the Spanish government defaulted on its payments (cf. Sack of Antwerp etc.) -- but I assume we're beyond that today.

It's not even just the anti-choice position. It's the anti-birth control and emergency contraception position. It's the slut shaming and victim blaming when it comes to issues related to rape and sex, just like Rush does here. It's the trivialization of women's issues, and of women in general.

There are plenty of reasons for most women to look at the GOP and decide to take a pass.

96 theheat  Fri, Apr 8, 2011 2:44:04pm

I'm convinced Rush and his ilk find the hysteria and hate they perpetuate preferable to sex with real women. It's what gets them off. It's a big power trip for guys that couldn't get laid in a whorehouse if they were plastered with $100 bills.

They get up in the morning, brush their teeth, comb their thinning bad haircuts, move their gut out of the way, stare over their mountainous man boobs at their tiny little penis and think to themselves, "I make shit happen. Damn, I'm hot."

You better believe they have to pay for it.

Yes, yes, and yes. These days, I'm probably one of the more conservative Lizards, but as long the the GOP persists in this anti female agenda, I cannot register as a Republican or give them a dime of my money. I can still see myself voting for some Republicans who are closer to the center and do not support the anti female agenda, but most of them are in the northeast and have limited appeal to Republicans around the country. 101 ProGunLiberal  Fri, Apr 8, 2011 2:51:34pm

Off topic, but these people in Misratah are worth much more than Rush Limbaugh. These people are badass.

11:24pm
Gaddafi's government officials have been taking foreign journalists on various tours in past weeks to reinforce their position that they are in control of the situation in the country.

But a government-controlled trip to Misurata today instead suggested that the situation of Gaddafi's troops had grown more dire after weeks of laying siege to the enemy's stronghold, says the Associated Press news agency.

Reporters were taken to the same road junction, more than a mile from the centre of town, where government officials took them about 10 days ago. Back then, it was to show the effects of a NATO airstrike. This time, it
was simply as far as the tour could go before the sounds of gunfire and shelling forced officials to turn around.

At one point, the journalists took cover amid gunfire. A Libyan soldier, Walid Mohammed Walid, received a head wound in the shooting and was taken to a hospital.

And while Gadhafi's forces at the intersection were seen on open ground on the earlier visit, this time the few soldiers there were hiding out in buildings or on rooftops.

The scene along the road from Tripoli, dotted with burned-out tanks, anti-aircraft guns hidden by vegetation and checkpoints made of tires and sand banks, underscored the devastating struggle over Misrata. It is the most sustained conflict in the Libyan uprising and the focus of a growing international efforts to bring aid by sea to besieged residents caught in the crossfire.

Just 160km southeast of capital Tripoli, Misurata is symbolic and strategic asset for both sides, each of which holds key parts of Libya's third-largest city.

These people are at the edge catastrophe, with little food or water, and now electricity. And they seem to be winning.

Can we have a few of these guys in the US? They'd make awesome US citizens.

Biden UNH speech:
[Link: www.politico.com...]

During his 36 years in the Senate, one of Vice President Joe Biden’s signature issues was protecting women from abuse. Now, he’s taking that cause to an audience whose members weren’t even born when he took his first oath of office: college students.

The vice president is speaking out on behalf of an Education Department initiative to address problems like rape and sexual violence on schools across the nation, launched in the wake of a Title IX complaint filed by a group of Yale students last month. Biden elevated the issue with a passionate speech to undergraduates at the University of New Hampshire on Monday, and joined a conference call with university presidents and reporters Wednesday.

“Look guys – all you guys in the audience – no matter what a girl does, no matter how she’s dressed, no matter how much she’s had to drink – it’s never, never, never, never, never okay to touch her without her consent,” Biden told a rapt crowd on the Durham, N.H. campus. “This doesn’t make you a man – it makes you a coward. A flat-out coward.”

The speech came just days after the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights announced it would investigate a complaint filed by 16 Yale University students in March. The students accused the university of failing to adequately address sexual harassment complaints, a violation of the Title IX statute.

While I agree with your sentiment, I am not sure that the actual data bears out your view. While there has been a gender gap in recent US Presidential elections, it hasn't been THAT great. (I think in 2008 it was 65 - 43 in favor of Obama, which is significant, but not determinative. And that was up from 2004.)

Repealing Roe has been a GOP plank since the opinion came out, and they have won a fair number of elections since then. So while I wish you were right, I think you overstate the case.

House Votes Against ‘Net Neutrality’

...House Joint Resolution 37, which was approved by a vote of 240 to 179, was spurred by the F.C.C.’s approval in December of an order titled “Preserving the Open Internet.” The order forbids the companies that provide the pipeline through which consumers gain access to the Internet from blocking a user’s ability to reach legal Internet sites or to use legal applications.

But Republicans in the House maintained that the order exceeded the F.C.C.’s authority and put the government in the position of overseeing what content a consumer could see and which companies would benefit from Internet access.

Yes... pressure... although I am not an active game player, I don't even associate the Mac as having anything to do with gaming. Why... personal opinion, when I think of how the Mac has been marketed over the years, or at least the marketing that stuck with me, it's been how the Mac is the platform for desk top publishing, graphics and such.

Games don't even come to mind.

Now, the Ipod Touch, Iphone and Ipad seems to have more association with gaming than the desktop Mac's. There are thousands of game apps available for those platforms, from the very simple to what I consider rather complex and amazing.

Meanwhile, let's have a deeper look at the work product of intellectual giant behind the GOP budget, Paul Ryan.

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

Sample:

Specifically, the Ryan proposal trumpets the results of an economic projection from the Heritage Foundation, which claims that the plan’s tax cuts would set off a gigantic boom. Indeed, the foundation initially predicted that the G.O.P. plan would bring the unemployment rate down to 2.8 percent — a number we haven’t achieved since the Korean War. After widespread jeering, the unemployment projection vanished from the Heritage Foundation’s Web site, but voodoo still permeates the rest of the analysis.

In particular, the original voodoo proposition — the claim that lower taxes mean higher revenue — is still very much there. The Heritage Foundation projection has large tax cuts actually increasing revenue by almost $600 billion over the next 10 years.

A more sober assessment from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office tells a different story. It finds that a large part of the supposed savings from spending cuts would go, not to reduce the deficit, but to pay for tax cuts. In fact, the budget office finds that over the next decade the plan would lead to bigger deficits and more debt than current law.

And...

And then there’s the much-ballyhooed proposal to abolish Medicare and replace it with vouchers that can be used to buy private health insurance.

The point here is that privatizing Medicare does nothing, in itself, to limit health-care costs. In fact, it almost surely raises them by adding a layer of middlemen. Yet the House plan assumes that we can cut health-care spending as a percentage of G.D.P. despite an aging population and rising health care costs.

The only way that can happen is if those vouchers are worth much less than the cost of health insurance. In fact, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that by 2030 the value of a voucher would cover only a third of the cost of a private insurance policy equivalent to Medicare as we know it. So the plan would deprive many and probably most seniors of adequate health care.

I expect some other countries, notably India, to start to really feel the pinch sooner rather than later. India is heading towards petroleum product shortages, due in no small part by the government trying to control prices there.

High oil doesn't automatically translate into immediate recession, but over time there is a real displacement of wealth from working people towards sources offshore.

Continued fall out from the Japanese quake is also piling up, and with the GOP led effort to lay off hundreds of thousands of people who work either directly for some sort of government or indirectly via contractors, all of this could add up to what is needed to push our financial system back into dangerous territories, with dropped mortgage payments and reducing consuming spending.

Just my quick arm-chair take of things. YMMV.

Actually for most Mac users, that lack of an upgrade path is a plus. You're dealing with a different psychology here.

Maybe that's where my writer's block lies. I don't get the psychology of a Mac user, since I'm not one. To me, swapping out a CPU or motherboard or whatever is relatively simple. Building a PC is like a giant jigsaw puzzle. I've built my last few computers myself.

I like my iPod and all, and I'd love an iPad somewhere down the line, since SXSW showed me how useful they are, but I'm not a Mac user. That's probably why this is such a bear for me.

Toxic Dollar: Why Nobody Seems to Want US Currency

Traders are warning of a dramatic change in dollar selling. They fear central banks from the Middle East may force their Asian rivals to more aggressively drive the dollar down.

Too Many Dollars

In 10 months, the Dollar Index has lost 14% because the world keeps accumulating dollars it doesn’t want and sells them. Asian central banks are key.

Many Asian central banks have been forced into waging wars to keep their currencies from appreciating because of the influx of investors to emerging markets. They sell waves of their own currencies into the market in an attempt to keep exports competitive.

In return they often receive dollars. But with the Federal Reserve printing dollars and the greenback’s value continually falling, the Asians sell those dollars in order to preserve the value of their reserves.

“Asia Pacific banks are renowned for their strict diversification” says Neil Mellor at BNY Mellon. “They hold a level with China in order to be competitive. Beyond that it’s very strict ratios. They need to swap-out of dollars.”

Mac psycology is really product dependent. iPods, iphones and iPads all sell them selves on easy operability, quick gratification and trusted apps, in addion to the general slick design. imac's and macbooks sell themselves on slickness the form factor, thin clients (you don't need to turn everything off to run high performance programs) and software (notably AV production stuff). Mac Pro's sell themselves as reliable high power high performance machines with a good degree of customization (you want how many sound cards?), they are also really easy to upgrade.

To me, Mac pro's seem like they could be a viable contender in the high end gaming computer market. They have the graphics, memory and cpu performance to compete with high-end gaming PCs ($2,500+). They also tend to be stable...something many high horse power PCs struggle with.

The issue here (and it is one I am acquainted with tangentially), is that some games require a fast, new machine (usually, the high-end new fps games aimed at young men) and some don't. The GOP should leave the social issues funding out of this all together. Over all, the amount of money save by defunding things like NPR or PP is a drop in the fiscal bucket, and it's evident that they've picked on these targets because they really don't deal with the real issues... the special interests give-a-ways that is prevalent in both parties.

The Democrats are happy to see the GOP wasting time on soft-issues like this, because it relieves them of the opportunity to have to deal with the hard issues too.

- tax rates at clinton era levels

- eliminate provision in bush medicare drug benefit that forbids fed govt from negotiating drug prices with drug companies
- only fund weapons programs that defense dept agrees are necessary, not pork programs that even defense dept doesn't want
- review of overseas defense commitments

this is only a start, but the dollar amt that the deficit would be closed should significantly exceed any serious proposal currently put forward by the gop, imho

This may be good news... or at least a possible move in the right direction...

6:45 p.m. ET - From CNN Senior White House Correspondent Ed Henry:

A senior Democratic source told CNN negotiators are now focusing on a proposal to keep the government open for three days while leaders try to finish a broader budget deal this weekend as a last-ditch effort to stave off a crisis.

The proposal would not include any controversial legislative riders on controversial topics like abortion, but the Democratic source cautioned it is not clear the plan can pass the House and Senate by the midnight deadline to keep the government running.

It is, however, important to note that the White House on Thursday said President Obama could sign another short-term continuing resolution if broader negotiations were making progress.

So the solution is to shut down the government, which will end up costing more money than if it remained open, plus lowering revenue since sources of it will be close? That makes perfect sense.

And naturally, he's a Fox News watching, Beck/Limbaugh/Hannity listening fanboy who thinks the Tea Party are patriots.

I love the guy to death. Known both him and his wife since high school. But when it comes to his political rants, I start channeling my inner Foghorn Leghorn:

re: #198 engineer dog

here's my suggestion for a progressive budget plan

- tax rates at clinton era levels
- raise cap on income subject to ss tax, currently at $106,500
- eliminate provision in bush medicare drug benefit that forbids fed govt from negotiating drug prices with drug companies
- only fund weapons programs that defense dept agrees are necessary, not pork programs that even defense dept doesn't want
- review of overseas defense commitments

this is only a start, but the dollar amt that the deficit would be closed should significantly exceed any serious proposal currently put forward by the gop, imho

Or the DNC, for that matter. They really need to put tax hikes and defense cuts on the table, because without those elements, the budget just isn't going to be balanced. They are farting around in the margins now, and its irritating.

Like me, you might be asking yourself: Why on earth would he threaten to veto funding for the troops? What is his game plan? Basically, he’ll veto military funding because he wants the rest of the government funded too. And by the rest of the government, he means things like Harry Reid’s “Cowboy Poetry.” Essentially, he’s holding military funding hostage to NPR funding. This is a perfect analogy for what is wrong with this entire budget showdown. Our federal government has strayed so far from what is constitutionally mandated that they are blind to the fact that NPR funding is not a constitutional duty. Funding our military at a time of war is!

Romney has zero chance of getting the nomination, because the far-right "base" absolutely despise him for (a) being a Mormon, and (b) supporting health-care reform in a fashion similar to Pres. Obama's.

Huckabee may not be a full-blown "birther", but it's well-documented that he's got a complete orchestra's worth of dog-whistles that he has pulled out on multiple occasions.

I think Romney's got the best chance. He'll sit out the early rounds where the nutcases make idiots of themselves and force the slightly less nutty to say things they will later regret: note that Romney is not going to his first, Fox-sponsored debate where Pawlenty will stand on the stage with Santorum, Cain, and Gingrich. Having avoided that circus, Romney will finally step into the arena with the relieved backing of every sane and very wealthy mainstream donor.

After a very expensive campaign, he'll pick Michele Bachmann as his VP nominee. And after they lose, they can make toothpaste commercials together.

Well, a girl can dream, can't she?

Sarah Palin Can't Explain What A Government Shutdown Entails, Blames “Budget Gurus” For Her Ignorance
Reported by Ellen - March 7, 2011

Sarah Palin claimed that she wanted to know what a shutdown of the federal government would entail when she was asked about it on Justice with Judge Jeanine (Pirro) Saturday night (3/5/11), and then went on to accuse “budget gurus” of keeping the public in the dark. But had Palin really wanted to know, the answer was just a computer mouse click away – assuming she couldn't just search her own memory for the 21-day shutdown that occurred in December 1995/January 1996, during the Clinton administration or any of the 14 other shutdowns that have occurred since .

During her interview with Palin, Pirro asked “what would actually happen” if the government were to shut down.

Palin squeaked in reply, “Well, that's a good question. It's amazing that the budget gurus there in D.C. aren't telling the public what actually happens if some delayed programs are going to be a result or if some bills don't necessarily get paid as quickly as they would get paid... That's a question that certainly a lot of us would like to know, what does this really entail, this quote, unquote government shutdown.”...

Palin Says Government Shutdown Would Help Fight Debt
Thursday, 17 Feb 2011 09:07 PM

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, weighing a presidential bid next year, said she opposes raising the U.S. debt ceiling and welcomes a government shutdown in the fight over federal spending.

Speaking today to business executives and civic leaders in Woodbury, New York, Palin said Republicans shouldn’t be deterred by Democratic “scare tactics” over a possible government shutdown.

It would force President Barack Obama to work with Republicans, she said. “Not necessarily would that be a bad thing on either side.”

The U.S. debt is projected by the Treasury Department to reach its authorized ceiling of $14.3 trillion within a few months, setting the stage for a congressional showdown over lifting the borrowing limit. Also, current government funding runs out March 4 as lawmakers battle over the budget for the rest of the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30.

Raising the debt ceiling isn’t the answer, Palin, 47, said as she took questions at a meeting held by the Long Island Association, one of New York’s largest business groups.

“To me, all that’s going to do is create this allowance for more big spenders to get in there,” she said...

People have forgotten by now, but Citizen's United? The people who made the anti-Hillary movie that was the subject of that court decision? The whole name of the group was Citizens United Not Timid.

And check out the incredibly classy logo Roger Stone designed for them:

In 2009, University of Arizona researchers performed C14 dating on the manuscript's vellum, which they assert (with 95% confidence) was made between 1404 and 1438. In addition, the McCrone Research Institute in Chicago found that much of the ink was added not long afterwards, confirming that the manuscript is indeed an authentic medieval document

It might be easier for people to notice if it were to always be visible, rather than just appearing appear clicking to reply to something (Since I assume people are probably more focused on the reply at that point). Or, at least, it only appears for me after clicking to reply.

(CNN) -- In the search for answers to some of the most mysterious and fundamental questions about the the universe, Europe's $10 billion particle-smashing Large Hadron Collider has been hogging the spotlight in recent years.

Suddenly, this week, physics enthusiasts' eyes turned to Tevatron, a much smaller and less powerful particle accelerator in Batavia, Illinois, that is scheduled to be shut down for good after September. And, depending on what happens with the budget crisis on Capitol Hill, it could be even sooner.

An AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer In Service to America) wrote that they and "young people like me are working all over the country doing things like helping Habitat build houses, tutoring students, creating systems to better nonprofit programs, and cleaning up neighborhoods. We're working in exchange for a stipend that keeps us at the federal Poverty level -- right around $760 a month."

"If the federal government shuts down, how are we going to pay our bills? It's not like you can have a huge emergency fund on a poverty wage. And we're barred by the federal regulations of our programs from seeking other employment," they wrote. "I get that the budget crisis is bad but my landlord still wants to get paid."

Remember, a lot of people will be affected by Govt. shutdown. Their comments.

GOP memo: no deal reached
By Meredith Shiner | 4/8/11 @ 8:30 PM EST

House Republicans received a memo from leadership around 8:20 p.m. Friday evening indicating that despite reports that a budget agreement was imminent, there still is no deal.

The note from the GOP whip's office says:

"We would like to clear up some confusion and relay that there has not yet been a deal reached. The negotiations are ongoing."

Democratic and GOP sources told POLITICO earlier this evening that a deal on social policy riders has been reached, but not on a spending-cut number.

Time for desperate measures. Breaking out the ugly dealmaker tie.

I admit to a certain naivete about the whole 'dealmaking' process in government, so I'm not certain what more really needs to be said across the aisle.

Surely at some point someone just has to stand up and say, 'Look, we all know that nobody in this room is going to propose anything that will actually reduce debt or the deficit in any meaningful fashion, because that would involve annoying corporate special interests. And we've already given a few cuts here and there so some of us can claim accomplishments. Yes, I know that some of you gentlemen have socon voters that want to get medieval on the advances society has made, but I think we can all see that these people are so indoctrinated that nothing short of actual execution of liberals will satisfy them at this point. So why don't we all just stop being complete arseholes for a moment? Can we do that? Stop being arseholes, just for a second?'

It'd fly in the House of Lords.

Estimates of 2011 job losses from $60b in cuts ran from 200,000 to 700,000. $39b in cuts would mean about 120,000 to 450,000 jobs lost.

re: #157 Lidane

I like my iPod and all, and I'd love an iPad somewhere down the line, since SXSW showed me how useful they are, but I'm not a Mac user. That's probably why this is such a bear for me.

Instead of focusing on what Macs can't do, perhaps putting the spotlight on what they can. One of the things that people "know" is that there aren't any games for Macs but that isn't really true anymore except for the few top of the line AAA shooters and MMOs. You could make the focus be highlighting the ways that today's Mac gaming environment is NOT the way it always was. Something along the lines of "The Golden Age of Mac Gaming" or something like that.
Highlight how both Steam and the Mac App Store are very Mac like distribution mechanisms (buy/download/play), as suggested above, it just works. You could also highlight the fact that today there is an ever growing list of games, both casual and high profile coming from both the PC world (e.g. Civ V and Value's stuff) and from the iOS world converging on the Mac desktop.
Remember that lots of people have purchased Macs in the last couple of years (especially laptops) and they don't have a shelf full of existing games so they are an open opportunity for sales as they build up a collection and establish new relationships with distributors.
Just some thoughts from a Mac guy who mostly plays Civ III when I get around to doing games so take them for what its worth.

P.S. regarding Halo, don't get us started OK? Just don't go there.

They tried with tax cuts for the rich and the Republicans wouldn't stand for it. I think the Republicans just play harder. Dems made some noise about defunding the war in Iraq under Bush but they never got serious about it. Republicans will push things as far as they can and nobody's really sure how far they'll go. Weaknesses in DoD's financial and management controls left it unable to properly account for $8.7 billion of the $9.1 billion in DFI funds it received for reconstruction activities in Iraq. This situation occurred because most DoD organizations receiving DFI funds did not establish the required Department of the Treasury accounts and no DoD organization was designated as the executive agent for managing the use of DFI funds. The breakdown in controls left the funds vulnerable to inappropriate uses and undetected loss.

POLITICO Breaking News
The White House and congressional negotiators have reached agreement on controversial policy riders in the stalled government funding measure but still haven't cut a deal on the final spending numbers, according to GOP and Democratic sources. The breakthrough came late Friday evening but there are still hurdles regarding the size of spending cuts, and it's unclear whether the latest round of negotiating will be enough to avert a government shutdown at midnight.

The sources did not provide POLITICO with any other details about exactly what the breakthrough is on the policy riders, the most controversial of which involves defunding Planned Parenthood. Democratic officials familiar with the talks said that alternatives -- such as a standalone vote or a study on Title X funding -- may be offered as a concession on the Planned Parenthood funding issue.

But remember: Shiny-side out to keep them from controlling your mind; shiny-side in to keep them from reading your thoughts.

In the movie "They Live!" (great 80s campy sci-fi flick), there's a rogue radio broadcast that is starting to sound pretty much like the year 2011.

There is a signal broadcast every second of every day through our television sets. Even when the set is turned off.

Look around at the environment we live in. Carbon dioxide, fluorocarbons, and methane have increased since 1958. Earth is being acclimatized. They are turning our atmosphere into their atmosphere.

We are like a natural resource to them. Deplete the planet, move on to another.

They want benign indifference. They want us drugged. We could be pets. We could be food. But all we really are is livestock.

Our impulses are being redirected. We are living in an artificially induced state of consciousness that resembles sleep.

The poor and the underclass are growing. Racial justice and human rights are non-existent. They have created a repressive society and we are their unwitting accomplices.

Their intention to rule rests with the annihilation of consciousness. We have been lulled into a trance. They have made us indifferent to ourselves, to others. We are focused only on our own gain.

Please understand: they are safe as long as they are not discovered. That is their primary method of survival. Keep us asleep, keep us selfish, keep us sedated.

Save the fireworks for those places where the spending levels will be a point of contention and on those fight smart. We're still fighting a war. This is not the time to reduce our defenses. We cannot work from peacetime assumptions. Secretary Gates has already submitted the plan for DoD and we should stick to it. The military needs that money for continued modernization. Social programs must take the hit instead.

1) Declare Victory
2) Bring Troops home
2A) Throw big parade
3) Cut DOD by 25%, across the board.
4) Buy more drones & hire more FBI to handle real threat from terrorists.

I disagree that China won't win. China doesn't care about it's citizens and would be willing to lose MILLION of its citizens in war to acheive it's objectives. If they want the ME in the next 10-20 years, they will get it.

It's the same line we got all through the Cold War: "We need a strong, cutting-edge military or else the Soviets will knock over our allies like dominos!"

It got a fresh breath of life during the Reagan years, after St. Ron got the White House by portraying Carter as "weak" and thus inviting nations to ignore us or even attack us. Then we went on a ginormous military spending spree, starting up all manner of weapons programs and procurements in order to match the doomsday scenarios being painted by our intelligence services about Soviet military might.

Then the 80s ended, the Cold War went with it, the Iron Curtain crumbled, and we found out that the Soviets had never been close to matching us, and the military they'd spent themselves into the ground constructing was rusting on the ground, in port, or on the assembly line.

Black men are being enslaved in various regions--it never stopped--and the world is largely indifferent, with notable exceptional individuals and organizations being the exception to this rule.

A former coworker of mine fought a long and strenuous battle with the Diocese of Oakland over their not wanting to pay for birth control pills that were prescribed for hormonal problems.

She explained, as nicely as she could that she had to take them, and that since she was married to another woman, it was very unlikely they would ever actually need to function as birth control, but they insisted on dragging the fight out.

The Chinese have their own issues to deal with at home though. A fragile economy and a couple of bubbles that are going to make our housing bubble look mellow for example. If they continue to spend on military/space like the Russians used to while trying to provide enough toys to keep the masses content, well, it's going to be interesting to watch that house of cards fall in.

Nothing gets an economy going like war . . . .

Millions of men without women--in a crumbling country? If you don't want them to riot against their own government, have them fight and die in a war . . . ..

China is not stupid.

Yeah, running a military dictatorship gets especially expensive when you're trying to provide your people with all the modern amenities at the same time.

re: #610 ggt

I think the idea is that if they see us as weak, they won't want to follow democracy. They will see it is the choice of weaklings.

We have to work with their current, medieval and chauvinistic attitude, until democracy and time change change it.

Actually, it's simpler - the 'idea' is that if they don't see America as being 100% completely awesome, radder than rad, all the time, then the 'enemy' will be emboldened, and then America won't be #1 any more, and dire and terrible things will happen.

It's a simplistic worldview - it relies on the nebulous 'enemy' out there, and a worldview of us vs them. It appeals to a very tribal mind. It's also naive - there are better, cheaper, and more lasting ways to exert power and retain influence than gunboat diplomacy.

Spending the Evil Empire into submission worked once. It will not work again - the closest equivalent to an Evil Empire out there is not an 'enemy' in the conventional sense of the word, and is far better fiscally. Spending the Evil Empire into submission also put great, dark claw marks in the soul of America, and gave birth to the national belief that hating and hurting your neighbours was not only morally acceptable in order to remain #1, but also, in many cases, morally justified, if they were those other kind of folks. It's the sort of policy that is so financially unsustainable that it can't work unless you gradually move the nation away from the ideas of liberty and egalitarianism, and towards plutocracy and theocracy. And it has grown and festered until today we have American politicians directly serving plutocrats, American voters demanding that their government bow to plutocrats, and American policies filled with such moral cowardice that they will directly hurt those who are weakest, because they have no voice, to help those who are strongest, because they can buy all the voice they need.

re: #629 SanFranciscoZionist

A former coworker of mine fought a long and strenuous battle with the Diocese of Oakland over their not wanting to pay for birth control pills that were prescribed for hormonal problems.

She explained, as nicely as she could that she had to take them, and that since she was married to another woman, it was very unlikely they would ever actually need to function as birth control, but they insisted on dragging the fight out.

Think about it from their point of view, what if the Diocese caved in and then she got raped? They'd feel pretty stupid then huh.

Wow, that's not even sarcasm.

You know, Rush really shouldn't be talking about the sexual activities of women, given his rather ... checkered history.

We're still waiting on an explanation on this one.

You mean like the second engine for the F-35 that the DoD has said repeatedly it doesn't need, but Congress says it does? How about all the programs that are way over budget and years behind schedule?

That program has already been canceled. Both the House and Senate have agreed to it being ended.

Nah. He's saying that being against interracial marriage doesn't make one a racist. I can't see how. Being against it requires a form of racism.

These guys like to define racism out of existence.

My feeling is that if they're going with any variant of 'people should stick with their own kind', they should be told they've just endorsed same-sex marriage.

And 'separate but equal' rarely means equal.

re: #617 goddamnedfrank

I'm on your side but bad example, the F35's second engine got killed in February. GE is still funding it on their own, but it's a dead deal as far as the budget is concerned.

Thank you for that.

Huckabee, to me, is the most personally likeable (even to me, a definite liberal) of the bunch, even though his policy statements scare me more than any of the others. This scares the crap out of me, because I know how well "aw shucks" folksy likeability plays with the American people. (see: George W. Bush campaign)

I would love to have Huck as a next-door neighbor. I do not think he should be let anywhere near politics.

Yeah, only took the DoD stating 4 years in a row that they didn't need the F-136 before it finally got the axe. And with GE still working on it, there's no guarantee that a future Congress won't decide to greenlight more money to it.

Well, if GE wants to keep the program alive on its own nickle, that's GE's business. If they think it'll make them money in export sales, let them go ahead. If they succeed, them let them be praised for a wise investment while raking in the money. If they fail, let GE alone pay the cost. Such is capitalism.

The convergence of a stash of Viagra and a trip to one of the world's foremost sex tourism destinations is the "checkered" part. Like what happens in Malaysia, often it includes things that are highly illegal in the US.

Just sayin.
